‘Tis the most festive season of the year, and Atlanta loves to celebrate. Here are our favorite holiday traditions found only in Atlanta.

Enjoy two spectacular adaptations of the timeless classic “A Christmas Carol” in Atlanta. Alliance Theatre transports you to the streets of London with a nostalgic enactment, all-star cast and live music on the Coca-Cola Stage from Nov. 9 through Dec. 24.

See “Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol” at Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse from Dec. 7 through 23. A holiday tradition for more than 20 years, Dickens’ characters come to life with a bit of song and a lot of holiday cheer.

The largest aquarium in the U.S. celebrates the sea-son with festive music, winter-inspired projections and a 40-foot live tree. Enjoy daily lighting of the tree, special holiday-themed dolphin presentations and photos with Santa under the sea at Georgia Aquarium from Nov. 10 through Jan. 1, 2025.

The award-winning and highly acclaimed Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) offers something for everyone this holiday season. While there are many holiday performances this season, be sure to catch the annual ASO events such as Christmas with the ASO (Dec. 12-15),

a time-honored event that features the ASO Chorus, the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir and the Morehouse College Glee Club. On Dec. 19, the ASO will perform Handel’s Messiah in a performance with the ASO Chorus.

Where else can you take a “Magical Flight to the North Pole?” Be awed by more than 2 million lights, performances and festive activities at Stone Mountain Christmas. Then take flight (SkyRide) on an enchanting journey up the mountain to meet Santa and his reindeer. The magic takes place Nov. 9 through Jan. 5, 2025.

One of Atlanta’s oldest holiday traditions returns. The Pink Pig, a beloved tradition that lasted 70 years, is back this year with a modern twist.

Is there anything more magical than a trip to the ballet to see “The Nutcracker” during the holidays? Atlanta Ballet brings the season to life with a production to the iconic Tchaikovsky score played live by the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Dec. 7-26.

You’re in for a treat at Center for Puppetry Arts. Rudolph returns in this faithful adaptation of the stop-motion holiday classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” adapted by Jon Ludwig and beloved by Atlanta families. WHERE TO SEE ATLANTA’S CIVIL RIGHTS MONUMENTS

Atlanta is widely known as the spiritual center of the American Civil Rights Movement. Even before leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Andrew Young became icons of the movement, African Americans in the city were paving the way for the tumult and change to come. Here are only a few of our favorite monuments and statues. Explore the area around them to enhance your Atlanta experience.

International Civil Rights Walk of Fame

At Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park right behind the visitor center is the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame, where the footprints of civil rights heroes such as Rosa Parks, Andrew

Young, Thurgood Marshall and others are embedded in a memorial.

Also at the park is the “Behold” statue by Patrick Morelli, depicting an African ritual of lifting a newborn

up toward the heavens and reciting, “Behold the only thing greater than yourself.”

SPORTING EVENTS THIS WINTER

There’s no shortage of sporting events this winter in Atlanta. As the season heats up, so do many of our sports teams. Here are a few events to keep on your radar.

Atlanta Falcons

The new-look Atlanta Falcons with Kirk Cousins as quarterback hope to finish their regular season on a high note with the playoffs possibly looming. The Falcons have three home games left at the world-class Mercedes-Benz Stadium –Dec. 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers, Dec. 22 against the New York Giants and the final game of the season on Jan. 5, 2025, against the Carolina Panthers. Owner Arthur Blank’s dedication to keeping concession prices affordable makes this one of the best in-stadium experiences in the NFL, so check out a game and enjoy the food.

Atlanta Hawks

Trae Young and the Hawks are back at it for another NBA season and once again, there’s more than just the NBA Championship at stake. The Emirates NBA Cup is also in play, and Atlanta’s home game at State Farm Arena on Nov. 29 against the Cleveland Cavaliers could be a big one. Additionally, the Hawks will have 18 home games from now until March. LeBron James and the Lakers will visit Dec. 6. Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets arrive Dec. 8. Atlanta native Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves come on Dec. 23. Victor Wembayama and the Spurs take on the Hawks Feb. 5, which will be followed by Giannis Antetokounmpo coming into town with the Bucks two days later. The stars will be out at State Farm Arena and you’ll have plenty of chances to see them.

SEC Championship

Atlanta is the center of the college football world, and the city will be incredibly busy with nearly all of the most important games of the season

taking place right here at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It all starts Dec. 7, when Atlanta will once again host the annual SEC Championship game. This game almost always has implications on who will go on to play for the college football national championship, so the eyes of the college football world will be squarely focused upon Atlanta.

Cricket Celebration Bowl

One week after the SEC Championship game, the annual Cricket Celebration Bowl will take place. The MEAC-SWAC challenge game to determine the Black National Championship is always an intense game, and this year’s edition will surely deliver in terms of entertainment – both on the field and in the stands with the bands.

Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

Mercedes-Benz Stadium will receive a little bit of a break before roaring in the New Year with the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. The Peach Bowl has been part of the College Football Playoff’s New Year’s

Six group of bowls and now that means more than ever since this game will serve as a quarterfinal game in the newly expanded College Football Playoff. The Peach Bowl is usually a hard-fought contest between two of the most elite teams in college football, and it will be no different with a trip to the semifinals on the line.

College Football Playoff National Championship

The road to the College Football Playoff National Championship doesn’t just go through Atlanta this year – it ends in Atlanta as well. The winding road of the college football season will come to an end on Jan. 20, 2025, as the Cotton Bowl and the Orange Bowl winners come together to decide who will lift the National Championship trophy once it’s all said and done. Tickets for all of these huge bowl games will be extremely hard to come by and this will be the hottest ticket of them all as the college football season finally comes to its exciting conclusion.

Georgia Tech Basketball

College football isn’t the only thing going on in town, as the hardwood will also be jumping with the sounds of college basketball. Both Georgia Tech’s men’s and women’s teams are going to be finishing up their non-conference schedules before entering into ACC play for the season. The men’s first conference home game will come on Dec. 21 against the Duke Blue Devils, and the women will host the Pitt Panthers

Dec. 29 to get their ACC schedule going. The women also will host the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the ACC-SEC Challenge on Dec. 4, so both squads of Yellow Jackets will be very busy at McCamish Pavilion this winter.

Georgia State Basketball

While the Yellow Jackets will be buzzing in Midtown, the Georgia State Panthers will be roaming Downtown at the GSU Convocation Center. The men’s team will play the rest of its home schedule (including Sun Belt Conference games) from now through the end of March – including a run of five-straight home games between Dec. 28 and Jan. 11. Meanwhile, the women will play a Thanksgiving home game against

the Campbell Camels, which will be the first of 12 home games from then until the end of the season. By the way, the two Georgia State basketball teams will each play Georgia Southern on Jan. 8 in order to prove that GSU truly does mean “State” instead of “Southern.”

Atlanta Vibe

Following a successful first season in the Pro Volleyball Federation that saw them make the playoffs and Leah Edmond win MVP, the Atlanta Vibe is back for another season. This year, the Vibe will play 28 games. What’s more, the team was able to keep its strong core intact following the free agency period. That means that the Vibe will be firmly poised to have another exciting season at Gas South Arena in 2025.

LOVB Atlanta

The Atlanta Vibe won’t be the only volleyball team in town this season. In addition to the Pro Volleyball Federation, League One Volleyball Pro will make its debut season in 2025, and Atlanta will field one of eight teams. LOVB Atlanta founding athlete Kelsey Robinson Cook will lead the way as the team is set to play six home games at the Gateway Center Arena at College Park. The opening game will be Jan. 8 against Salt Lake, and with single-game tickets starting at $18 and a season ticket deposit only being $30, now is the perfect time to get in on the ground floor with another exciting Atlanta volleyball team.
