With the introduction of technologies such as intraoral cameras, high-speed handpieces, and early CAD/CAM systems, dentists have become accustomed to facing high initial costs to adopt technologies and equipment. While valuable to the practice, these costs require considerable foresight to justif y the hef ty investment. Digital impression systems have been no dif ferent. They certainly bring improved productivity, bet ter oral care, and ultimately a bet ter patient experience, but these systems of ten come with a price tag that is simply not feasible for many dental practices.

CONSIDERING THE INVESTMENT The cost of most digital impression systems requires dentists to make careful calculations about their potential return on investment. • How much impression material does the practice go through in a normal month? • What is the retake rate for impressions?
• How frequently are remakes required for crowns or bridges, and how much time is being spent on adjustments for these restorations? Some dentists eventually conclude that it makes sense to invest in digital impression taking for superior accuracy, improved patient comfort, and reduction in retakes and remakes - but many are still hesitant to take the leap.
I believe that the latest news from 3M ESPE is going to bring many more dentists into CAD/CAM dentistry. An advanced digital impression system is being introduced at an unprecedented price - unparalleled in the CAD/CAM dentistry market. The model for this technology is similar to that for Smartphone’s and accompanying data plans. A consumer purchases a Smartphone with a commitment to purchase data services from the phone provider. Now, with an open, secure,

cloud-based plat form, clinicians can feel confident that the data generated from the system has a multitude of clinical applications … and that plat form will support future advances from a company they believe will deliver rapid advances in technology.
When dentists purchase the 3M True Definition Scanner, they also choose a data plan for ongoing use of the system. These plans start at $199 a month and allow dentists to more accurately project their costs for the system. So, not only does this technology present a new way to think about impression-taking, but also a new way to think about the af fordability of impression-taking technology and participation in CAD/CAM dentistry.
I took the leap in adopting digital impression technology when I purchased the 3M™ ESPE™ CAD/ CAM system in 2008. In the past four years, I have seated more than 400 units without a single remake or impression retake. I have seen firsthand that the digital workflow is more controlled and consistent. Patients are amazed with this technology’s reliably accurate results! We know that traditional impression materials can accurately capture impressions. But we also know that we may have distortion in the tray and never know it, or bubbles at the margins, tears in critical areas, and problems with the stone phase.
With this new scanner, impressions are captured with powerful 3D-in-motion video technology, which lets the dentist view the scan in outstanding detail as it is being captured. This level of accuracy contributes to improved productivity - another at tractive moneysaver compared to the traditional method.

PEN PLATFORM, MORE CHOICES The open, secure, cloud-based plat form gives dentists and labs more freedom in creating restorations, and multiple connections with mills and CAD/CAM systems are forthcoming. The system uses open STL files, giving dentists excellent flexibility in choosing the best restorative solution for their desired clinical outcome.
With the introduction of technologies such as intraoral cameras and early CAD/CAM systems, dentists became accustomed to high prices right out of the gate. These technologies were promising and had great potential for added profitability, but some dentists had a tough time justif ying the cost. With this new model for digital impression taking, there is no such trouble. A price tag under $12,000 makes this system very reasonable for the average dental practice - not just high-tech practices. Now dentists have an ex tremely practical and easy-to-budget-for model to enter the world of digital impression taking.
In addition to the system’s flexibility, the scanner has a small, comfortable scanning wand that functions much like a handpiece. This wand integrates smoothly into the procedure and allows the dentist to scan comfortably from a seated position. Using the scanner really does add an element of fun to treatment and dramatically improves patient comfort.
Dr. Erickson is an ADA member, past trustee of the Minnesota Dental Association and past president of the Saint Paul district Dental Society. He is a 1980 graduate of the University of Minnesota and has completed the Continuum at the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education.

Comprehensive Automated Patient Communications for Dental Practices
Lighthouse 360 (“LH360”) is the most comprehensive, most automated, patient communications system in dentistry. That may seem like a bold statement, but it’s true, and easily verifiable - just look at the comparison chart that accompanies this article. LH360 was created by Lighthouse Practice Management Group in 2006, based on the company’s (and its founders’) ex tensive experience working with dental practices - and ONLY with dental practices - going all the way back to 1987. Two of the founders (Joel Kozikowski and Brian Smith) created PracticeWorks in 1993, and are responsible for most of the core features of that popular practice management system. Dr. Leonard Tau, owner of the Pennsylvania Center for Dental Excellence in Philadelphia, has been using LH360 for almost two years, and has this to say about it:
“The name for this program should be Set It and Forget It. It does every thing for you. It’s automated for you. The recare system is amazing. I get a lot of patients who automatically click on a link asking them to schedule a recare appointment when they’ve had to cancel or are overdue. It confirms appointments

Automation If it sounds like “automation” is a key concept to LH360, that’s because it is. Here’s Mr. Kozikowski on the history of that: “To really understand it, you need to go back to where Lighthouse originated. One of the features of PracticeWorks that Brian and I are so proud of - and spent most of the 1990’s trying to refine - is the system of Experts that we built into it. It was based on the philosophy that a lot of practice management systems took a “computer aided” approach to things. You could tell the computer I want you to print this list, or Find all of the patients who meet these criteria, and the computer would print the report. But that required the person to know what he was looking for, and to know how to ask for it - and to even know that he should be asking for it in the first place. We wanted to create a system where the computer tells you what you need to be aware of, automatically, at the right time - and then even tells you what to do to resolve the issue.
We did that in PracticeWorks with the Of fice Expert, Automation Expert, Contact Experts, etc. Af ter we lef t there and started Lighthouse, and eventually started working on Lighthouse 360, we were determined to incorporate that level of automation. I believe we have succeeded, which is why we say that LH360 is the most automated patient communications system in dentistry.”

Another thing that dif ferentiates LH360 from competitors is its ability to reach 100% of patients in multiple ways. Whereas
some systems use only email and tex t messaging to communicate with patients, and some others add automated phone calls, only LH360 does all of those, PLUS total automation of postcards and let ters, so that every patient can be reached with an appropriate message, at the appropriate time. Why is this such a critical component? Mr. Smith explains: “We have over 8.5 million patients in our database, from over 2,200 dental practices. Even af ter an of fice has been using LH360 for six months or more - so they’ve had ample opportunity to collect an email address or a cell phone number from most of their patients - about 23% of patients have given the of fice neither one. For some messages - reactivation and past due recall are good examples - an automated phone call is simply not going to be successful, so you have to be able to reach patients another way. Our ability to completely automate postcards and let ters - and to do so at a lower cost than an of fice can do it manually - is critical to the success of those systems. When so many of its competitors serve multiple industries, as diverse as dentistry, auto repair shops, spas, salons and florists, you might wonder why every customer of LH360 is a dentist. Mr. Jorgensen, who “rode shotgun” (front desk) in his wife Bridget t’s practice for over 10 years, has this to say: “While there are a lot of things about a dental practice that are similar to most other
small businesses, there are also a lot of things that aren’t.
