Atlanta Dental Supply Celebrates The Life Of David P. Blackshear During Mr. Blackshear’s 72 years with Atlanta Dental, he served as President, Chairman of the Board, and was active on the Board of Directors as Chairman Emeritus for the past 9 years. St Simons, Georgia, May 29, 2021 – The Blackshear family and the Atlanta Dental family are sad to share the loss of Mr. David Blackshear, but encouraged along with his family who shared that he is now home with the Lord after 96 years of life. Mr. Blackshear was a leader in the dental community and dental supply distribution in the southeast, plus, he was known nationally by manufacturers and other distributors. His legacy is deeply embedded in the fabric of Atlanta Dental through his contributions to the company’s culture and success. David Blackshear and his partner Bill Gorman completed the transition of ownership and leadership of Atlanta Dental in 2008 to now over 30 employee-owners. He blessed us all with his wisdom and always focused on doing the “right thing” for our customers, employees and vendor partners. He will be missed by those that have known or worked with him, and the culture he helped establish will live on through all the lives he impacted. Mr. Blackshear was a beloved leader and mentor who was respected by all who had interaction with him. His emphasis on care, teamwork and empowerment left a lasting mark, and many employees have remained at the company for 20, even up to 50 years, thanks to the strong culture of “business family” that continues still today. Throughout his career, Mr. Blackshear received numerous honors for his leadership, including Chairman of the Board of ADC, the Dental Distributor Hall of Fame, President of the American Dental Trade Association, the Atlanta Rotary Club and band leader of the Atlanta Seventeen (Big Band Music). As one of our country’s “Greatest Generation”, he had a distinguished record serving our country as a navigator on a B-24 bomber in the Pacific Theater of WWll. Mr. Blackshear’s patriotism and love of our country never wavered. David Blackshear was born in Atlanta in 1924 and attended Boy’s High before enrolling at Georgia Tech. After his freshman year, his sense of duty led him to enlist in the US Army Air Corp. After the war he returned to Atlanta and finished his education at Georgia Tech, graduating with “The Class of WWII”. After graduation, Mr. Blackshear joined Atlanta Dental to begin his long and distinguished career. During this time, he met the love of his life and wife of 53 years, Mary Virginia (“Sis”) Stribling. Together they had 3 children and 2 grandchildren. Family has always been a centerpiece of his love and affection.

Discovering Which Patients Have Sleep Issues: Have the Right Conversation by Michael Cowen

“Are there really that many sleep patients who need your help and where are they?” I’ll give you a hint. Yes, they are on your schedule, in your chair, and in your waiting room right now. They were on yesterday’s schedule, too. You did hygiene checks on some of them, one canceled, and you prepped a Bruxzir on #30 for another. The path to treating more patients in your practice starts with screening, and there is a recipe to have a successful screening protocol. It contains three key ingredients that will aid you in clearly and quickly identifying these patients. The first ingredient (Ingredient #1) lies in the patient’s health history. If it includes any indication of airway disorders, you should initiate a conversation about airway health. A short list would include: any cardiac condition (including but not limited to hypertension), history of stroke, diabetes, obesity, chronic headaches, or mood disorders.

Do you know the difference between signs (physical evidence observed in an exam) or symptoms (subjective information shared by the patient)? They aren’t the same, but both are useful here. Signs are the second ingredient (Ingredient #2) in the recipe. Signs of an airway disorder are easily distinguishable and include: Mallampati score of 3 or more, bruxism, scalloped tongue, and acid reflux. When you observe these signs, it’s an indicator you should have a conversation about airway health. The third ingredient (Ingredient #3) is patient symptoms. These can include snoring, morning headaches, chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating, excessive napping, and dependence on stimulants such as coffee, soda, energy drinks or medications. If your patient presents with any of these symptoms, have a conversation about airway health with them. That brings us to the real problem, right?

Feature Article | The conversation. The crucial conversation. Your last patient was 15 minutes late. There’s a hygiene check in Op 2 and an emergency patient in Op 3. You’re already 20 minutes behind, and there’s no end in sight. How in the world are you supposed to have this conversation with the patient who screened positive for an airway disorder? You don’t do it. No one does. And that is why it is so hard to “find” these patients. Because you’re not talking to them.

Most general dentists screen less than 70% of their patients for OSA. The following is a template taking all these variables into consideration. DENTAL INSURANCE PARTICIPATION “Do I have to?“

Although a pleasant dream, the thought of refusing to take dental insurance and becoming a totally fee -for-service practice strikes fear in the average dentist. Even though there are a significant number of dental practices that decline participation, most are compelled to sign up for multiple networks to increase new patient flow and/or minimize complaints from existing patients that expect you to be on their list of providers. At the very least, there is pressure to confirm benefits, file paperwork, and collect remaining balances after reimbursement from the insurance company. The reduced revenue, stress and time involved in managing the processes are hardly worth the contract fee received through most networks. The grab to participate in multiple networks and attract more patients, costs the average practice thousands of dollars each year. To help understand how this happens in short terms, the insurance companies filter each claim through all the networks you have contracted then reimburses you through the lowest paying network with your name on it. As if that is not bad enough, this process also creates confusion between you and your patients making it impossible to provide accurate payment estimates. Over 40 years ago, most dental insurance companies paid $1,000-$2000 maximum annual benefits per participant. At that time gas was $0.90 a gallon, stamps were $0.15 each, a dozen eggs were $0.50, and you could get a nice new car for

under $7,000. Most everything cost a lot more today, however most participants still receive average dental benefits of $1,000-$2,000 per year! Compared to the value of a dollar today, that does not really amount to a lot, but many patients still teeter on a decision to accept treatment based on how much their insurance will pay and whether you will accept participation. So, if you are going to participate, why not get paid as much as you possibly can without affecting the premiums paid by your patients, reduce the confusion of coverage and the chase to collect unpaid balances? You need someone on your side that knows the ins and outs of an industry that models their business to maximize profit by minimizing payment for covered treatment. Good news!
