6,500 patients were seen at the Georgia GMOM (Mission of Mercy), the North Carolina NCMOM, and the South Carolina DAD (Dental Access Days) events, over a three week time frame. Atlanta Dental Supply would like to recognize and say “Thank you” to all the dental professionals that gave of their time and skills to bring healing and comfort to those who otherwise would not have received dental care. We were proud to have 26 Atlanta Dental employees work closely with all the events to provide support for set up, ongoing service, tear down, supplies and distribution, as well as assistance wherever we were needed. For one rep, playing college football was a long shot. Playing with the pro’s was a dream come true.

rowing up, Jim Maxwell insisted on doing everything his older brother did. So, as soon as he was old enough, he strapped on a pair of football pads and hit the field. “I was in and have been ever since,” says the Atlanta Dental sales rep. By the time he got to high school, he was good enough to join his small Johnsonville, S.C., high school football team as a quarterback, he recalls. Following high school graduation, he assumed he would attend Clemson University, as did his brother and father. As it turned out, attending a small, little-known college, Gardner-Webb, was his ticket to play college football – and pursue a 5 ½-year career playing professional football. So, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 180-pound college freshman accepted a partial scholarship and set out to prove himself to his coaches and teammates. “I was red-shirted,” says Maxwell. “I moved to defense and started as a linebacker.” Four years, 60 pounds and 1 inch later, his game skills were hard to miss. Still, who would have suspected that he would be scouted his senior year, he says. “This was the first time I thought I had an opportunity to continue to play football,” he says. “It was a long shot, but I thought it would be great to one day tell my kids about it.” One of 53 For Maxwell, his main focus in college was to do well. “The NFL just happened,” he notes. a surprise, he recalls. In the end, he went with the Giants. “It was such an honor,” he says. “I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but it was very exciting.” That, and a whole lot of hard work, he discovered. Free agents join a roster of about 85 other players when they begin training camp, Maxwell explains. “Only about 53 of these players actually make the team. Just to have made it to training camp was such a long shot in my mind! I definitely wasn’t supposed to be one of the 53 players to move on.” That September, however, he joined 52 fellow players who would begin their first season in the NFL. “I definitely had to prove myself to the other guys,” he says. “They had never even heard of my college. “The NFL is such a competitive environment,” Maxwell continues. [Spectators] could never imagine the scrutiny and pressure the players are under. The coaches put extreme pressure on the players, and if they have one bad game, they may be fired the next day. “Every day, you’re in there with the best-of-the-best,”

And, it was definitely a growing experience, he adds. “Johnsonville, S.C., where I grew up, is a two-stoplight town. My college, GardnerWebb, was in a one-stoplight town. Moving to New Jersey to play for the Giants was very overwhelming. [My future wife], Lindsey, was finishing up college, and I was by myself. I’m used to saying, ‘Hey!’ to everyone I pass on the street.” He quickly learned that doesn’t work in Jersey. What began as an exciting career soon turned exhausting, however, as Maxwell and Lindsey were forced to crisscross the country as he signed with one team after another. “We were always leaving behind new friends,” he notes. “Lindsey was very supportive, but I knew it was stressful on her. She is a nurse and would have to leave behind a job and find a new one in the next city.” Against the odds, the young couple stuck with the game two years beyond the average NFL career. Then, in 2009, Maxwell

he continues. “Every year, they hold the NFL draft. For every one of the guys that makes the team, [another guy] won’t be back. On one hand, you’d love to play football forever, but from a mental and physical standpoint, you can’t do that.” That said, he made it through his rookie year with the New York Giants (2004) and followed up with another 4 ½ years with several other teams, including the San Francisco 49ers (2005), the Miami Dolphins (2006) and the Cincinnati Bengals (2007-09). During that time, Maxwell rubbed shoulders with a number of football notables, in-

The Advantages of Phosphor Storage Plate (PSP) Technology. Imagine a receptor even thinner than a dental film pack. Almost weightless, simple to position, flexible, comfortable, economical and reusable, phosphor plates are truly an advanced technology. Contrasted with sensors, a PSP is ultra-thin and patients are highly unlikely to experience discomfort. There are no wires hanging from their mouth. Mismanagement is often the reason for new business failure. Therefore, a wise business owner surrounds himself with the talented and experienced people it takes to make a business survive, grow, and prosper.

To run a business properly, you need to have expertise in a number of areas—financial planning, accounting, law, taxation, insurance, and investment management, to name a few. Because it is often impossible for a professional in one of these areas to be an expert in all of the other areas as well, it is often desirable for business owners to work with a team of advisers. Naturally, however, you’ll need a quarterback to direct and coordinate the advisory team. Typically, this person is your financial planner. What is the first thing a new president of the United States does after being sworn in to office? He builds his cabinet, selecting the most qualified persons to advise him on matters in which he himself is not qualified. The secretary of defense counsels the president on military matters, the secretary of state counsels him on worldwide political matters, and the secretary of the interior counsels him on the environment. Thus, the president generally makes no decision until he is fully apprised by the experts. That’s what you need to do. You need to build your

own cabinet or team of professional advisers who can help develop and implement your business plans most effectively. Tip: Banks are more likely to lend money to a business that is managed by people with extensive experience in the type of business you own. An advisory team that provides management assistance on a regular basis may help you get money more easily. Members of Your Team Your team may be made up of people from both inside and outside your company. The insiders may be part of your salaried management staff, while the number of outside advisers is largely a function of cost. When selecting advisers, you should be aware of their various professional designations, such as, certified public accountant and certified financial planner, as well as the scope of their expertise. Inside Team—Key Full-Time Employees Like any sports team, you need your basic players out on the field at all times. These are the people who know what needs to be done and do their jobs well. The Downside of Economic Recovery

Over the last several years, investors have grown accustomed to historically low interest rates. Ever since the Federal Reserve Board’s target fed funds rate—the rate at which banks lend to one another—hit a high above 19% in mid-1981, the long-term direction of rates has been downward. In the last decade, the Fed’s data* shows the target rate has never been much higher than 6%. And since December 2008, the Fed has kept it at a previously unheard-of level between 0.25% and zero to try to ensure that credit would be available to promote economic recovery. Because bond prices typically rise when interest rates fall, that decline in yields has produced a bull market in bonds over the last decade. But what happens when the trend reverses? Even if they continue to remain relatively stable for a while, ultra-low interest rates have nowhere to go but up. When the economic recovery begins to show signs of strength, at some point the Federal Reserve Board will begin to raise the target rate again. When that happens, bond prices www.henssler.com

also will begin to reverse their long-term direction. Here are some factors to consider in anticipation of future rising interest rates. Bond Maturities: When Short is Sweet When interest rates rise, long-term bonds generally feel the impact the most. In an extended period of rising interest rates, bond buyers become reluctant to tie up their money for longer periods, because they foresee higher yields in the future. The later the bond’s maturity date, the greater the risk that its yield will eventually be superseded by that of newer bonds. As demand drops and yields increase to attract purchasers, prices fall. There are various ways to manage that impact. If you own individual bonds, you always have the option of holding them to maturity. Architects, attorneys, C.P.A.s, and brokers are some types of independent contractors that you can hire when your need occurs. �Associates and Colleagues: Pick the brains of your associates and colleagues. As a business owner, you have probably joined groups of others who have similar experiences (e.g., Rotary, Small Business Administration). Take advantage of these opportunities to get advice from these “unofficial” team players. �Accredited Accountant: An accredited accountant has passed an examination prepared by the Accreditation Council of Accountancy and Taxation. This is a national accounting accreditation board affiliated with the National Society of Public Accountants and the College for Financial Planning. Typically, accredited accountants specialize in small-business accounting. �Attorney: An attorney has obtained a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school, and has received a license to practice law from a state bar organization. Attorneys are particularly necessary when first establishing your business and when designing contracts and other legally enforceable documents. �CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional: A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (CFP®) professional has passed various courses in areas of investments and estate planning. The candidate must pass a comprehensive examination on these topics. Additionally, they are required to have three years of work experience and to participate in continuing education courses. �Certified Public Accountant: A Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.) has passed the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) national examination, which tests an individual’s ability in accounting, auditing, business law, and taxation. A C.P.A. is licensed in the state where they practice. �Chartered Financial Consultant®: A Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®) has passed a financial services curriculum, with emphasis on life insurance. A ChFC® must have three years of work experience and participate in continuing education courses. �Chartered Life Underwriter®: A Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®) is specifically trained in life insurance. They must have three years of work experience and participate in continuing education courses. �Personal Financial Specialist: A personal financial specialist (PFS) is a C.P.A., who concentrates on financial planning issues, and has met certain educational requirements, including continuing education courses. A test must be passed to obtain this designation. �Stockbroker: A stockbroker is trained in Dental Adviser

Choosing your professional advisers can be one of your most critical business decisions. How much advice you need, want, and can afford are some of the issues you should consider when forming a team. Only you can decide the best mix of advisers for your team. You may want to follow the below steps. Define Needs and Roles Break down your particular needs into component parts. Do you need a highly specialized sales force? How about a marketing department? Do you need legal advice? How about a financial and tax expert? Determining what you need will make it easier to conduct your search. You need to define each adviser’s role and communicate this information to all parties involved. Specify the conditions when one professional should defer to the judgment of another. You may want to appoint your quarterback—one adviser who coordinates the overall efforts of all parties to ensure that the “big picture” is kept in mind. Typically, the coordinator will be a financial planner with a strong tax background, or perhaps an accountant with a financial planning credential. This person is likely to be the one you’ll be dealing with frequently. Find the players Now that you understand the roles of the potential players on your team, it’s time to find the players. This remains true even if another adviser prefers a different approach. Be up-front about the team approach; make sure that each adviser is aware of the names, business addresses, and telephone numbers of the other advisers. In fact, one way to build a successful team is to let one adviser refer you to other professionals with whom they have a professional relationship. �Ability to Communicate Ideas to You Cearly and Simply: It is vital for you to understand your advisers. Make sure that they can explain complex topics in simple language and are willing to provide such explanations until you feel comfortable with a particular decision.

Commissions paid to business brokers, merger and acquisition specialists, investment bankers, and other experts can be expensive. However, the old adage remains true: You get what you pay for.

For growing businesses and liquid start-ups, the wisest course is to work with a team of advisers, with each adviser serving as an expert in his or her own area. In this way, you can be sure of receiving the most up-to-date strategies and the most legally accurate methods. Bond investments also can be laddered. This involves buying a portfolio of bonds with varying maturities; for example, a five-bond portfolio might be structured so that one of the five matures each year for the next five years. As each bond matures, it can be reinvested in an instrument that carries a higher yield. Laddering also can be used with certificates of deposit (CDs). If you own a bond fund, check the average maturity of the fund’s holdings, or the fund’s average duration. This takes into account the value of interest payments and will generally be shorter than the average maturity. The longer a fund’s duration, the more sensitive it may be to interest rate changes. Rising Rates and Other Assets Higher interest rates often are an attempt to prevent rising prices. When prices go up, purchasing power goes down, including the purchasing power of a bond’s fixed

payment for teaching, research or some other required service. With most scholarships, recipients can decide how to apply the funds. While your first instinct may be to apply it to tuition, fees, or books, thus making it tax free, this choice may impact your ability to claim the Lifetime Learning or the American Opportunity (formerly Hope) tax credits. These credits are based on the amount of tuition and fees paid. Therefore, if tuition and fees are paid in-part or in-full by a scholarship, you personally will have paid less when calculating your credit. Tax credits generally reduce your taxes dollar for dollar, so this could be a substantial savings. This scenario has the most impact on your ability to claim the Lifetime Learning credit, calculated as 20% of the first $10,000 of tuition and fees up to $2,000. For example, if you receive a large scholarship and apply it to these expenses, you may be left with less than $10,000 in eligible tuition and fees to count toward the credit. The American Opportunity credit is calculated differently—100% of the first $2,000 of tuition and fees, plus 25% of the next $2,000 of such expenses, up to $2,500. You can only take interest payments. That can make bonds less attractive to buyers. However, not all investments are hurt by higher prices. For example, commodities, such as oil and wheat, typically do well in inflationary periods. In fact, increases in commodity prices are often what trigger a bout of inflation. If you’re primarily interested in the overall value of your portfolio rather than a regular income stream, your financial professional can help you explore whether you should consider diversifying into asset classes that tend to benefit from inflation and that might help counteract the potential impact of falling bond prices. Though bonds are affected most directly, equities aren’t necessarily immune to rate increases. Though many companies borrowed money in recent years to take advantage of low rates and postpone the need to issue bonds for some time, those that haven’t may see their borrowing costs increase, which could affect their bottom lines. Even those that squirreled away cash could be hit, when they return to the bond markets eventually.

First, try applying the scholarship to tuition, and then reduce the amount of eligible tuition that can be used to calculate the tax credits. Second, try applying the scholarship to room and board, paying income tax on the scholarship, but allowing all tuition to be counted when calculating the credits. Calculating credits and determining how best to apply a scholarship can be difficult, even if you have a relatively simple tax return. However, the savings from taking advantage of federal tax credits—up to $2,500 in some cases—may make it worth your time to talk to your tax expert. A C.P.A. can help you and your family look at the different scenarios and make suggestions to save you money during your child’s college years. Also, if interest rates rise to a level that’s competitive with the return on stocks, that could reduce investor demand for equities. Higher Rates Aren’t All Bad News For those who’ve been diligent about saving, or who have kept a substantial portion of their investments in cash, higher rates could be a boon. Savings accounts, CDs, and money market funds are all likely to do better at providing income than they have in recent years. The downside, of course, is that if higher rates are accompanied by inﬂation, such cash alternatives might not keep pace with rising prices. And bear in mind, a money market fund is not insured or guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any other government agency. Although the fund seeks to preserve the value of your investment at $1 per share, it is possible to lose money investing in a money market fund.
