It was a beautiful night, and we were treated to lots of eye candy from Atlanta kitchen and bath designers. We have attended these events for more years than I care to count, but this year was special and somewhat bittersweet. That smiling man in the photo is David Leonard, our associate publisher. David has been an integral part of this company since 2002! He has also served on the NKBA board for the last seven years. David is moving on, but he will still be in our industry and in our hearts. What is the difference between site-finished and prefinished hardwood floors?
A
Site-finished hardwoods are installed raw (unfinished) and then sanded, stained and coated with polyurethane in your home. This means you are able to select the stain color and the gloss level of the floor. Prefinished hardwood floors are fully manufactured and finished in the factory. A prefinished floor offers a quicker and more convenient installation, but you have fewer choices in stain color, etc. Both types of wood flooring are available in solid and engineered wood.

should inspect them at least once a year to keep ahead of any problems with leaks or damage. If you have
fiber cement siding, make sure it is elevated off the roofline at least 1 inch to help reduce water absorption.

You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68° while you’re awake and setting it lower while you’re asleep or away from home.

TRENDS 8 easy-to-care-for houseplants to revive your space By Cory Olesen
Houseplants have become a booming design trend, especially with the uptick in people working from home. It’s nice to have some greenery to cheer up your space, and studies have shown that having plants around can reduce stress and improve indoor air quality. The idea of caring for plants can be daunting to some, though. But with a little knowledge and the right settings, you’ll be growing your indoor Eden in no time. Here are some suggestions on various plants to consider:
Pothos Let’s start with something that’s a no-brainer. Easy to grow, easy to find and really hard to kill, Pothos is a trailing plant that isn’t picky about its growing conditions. Its cascading foliage creates a dramatic effect when placed in a hanging pot or draped from a shelf. It comes in a number of varieties, such as Neon, Marble Queen and Golden. Light: Low to high, but avoid direct sun. Water: When top inch of soil is dry.
Fiddle-Leaf Fig
African Violet African violets are one of the few flowering houseplants. Make sure you have a really sunny spot available because these beauties require lots of light. They like their soil to be consistently moist, making plastic or glazed containers a good choice since they hold more moisture. Just make sure the pot you put them in has drainage holes. Never water your violets from above, as getting water on the leaves will cause them to rot. Instead, stick your pot in a shallow container of water and let it sit for about half an hour. Light: High. Water: When top of soil is dry; avoid getting water on leaves.
The “it-girl” of indoor plants, the FiddleLeaf Fig is a popular interior-design addition to any large space in need of a little life. Growing between 6 to 10 feet tall with large lush leaves, the temperamental behemoth demands specific conditions, including a cool temperature around 68 degrees and little to no movement. It is also worth noting that the leaves are toxic to cats and dogs. Light: Bright filtered or indirect light. Water: When the top inch of soil feels dry; over the winter months, water slightly less.

Orchids With stunning blooms that come in bright purples, pinks and yellows, orchids have captured the attention of growers for over a century. They come in hundreds of varieties, but the most common one in nurseries is the Phalaenopsis, also called the moth orchid. They have a reputation for being difficult to care for, but the truth is they don’t want too much attention. A spot with indirect sunlight (any welllit room will do) and a weekly soak in some room temperature water will do the trick. Light: Moderate to high; avoid direct sun. Water: Stick under running water for one minute weekly; avoid getting water on the leaves.
ZZ Plant ZZ plants thrive on neglect, making them a perfect choice for self-proclaimed plant killers. They grow in any light except direct sun, which will burn their leaves. They can even grow under fluorescent lights, which makes them popular office plants. With shiny, symmetrical leaves sprouting from long, upright stems, they make an attractive addition to any room. For something a little different, try the Raven ZZ, which grows black leaves. Light: Low to moderate; avoid direct sun. Water: When soil is completely dry; once every week or two is plenty.
Succulents If there’s one type of plant that’s hot right now — and that likes it hot, too — it’s succulents. One of the most common kinds you’ll see in nurseries is Echeveria. Like all succulents, it stores water in its thick leaves due to the fact it typically grows in arid conditions. Give it too much water, in fact, and it will cause root rot, which is the most common reason for dead succulents. Stick your Echeveria in a sunny window, and only water it when its leaves start to get wrinkly, which can take several weeks or longer. Light: High; does well in direct sun. Water: Only when leaves begin to wrinkle.
Snake Plant
Monstera Deliciosa
Another popular plant that’s easy to care for is the snake plant, also called mother-in-law’s tongue and Sansevieria. The broad, upright leaves come in several pattern variations that make for a striking statement in any space. Snake plants are a type of succulent, so they’re hardy and tolerate all light conditions. Only water them when the soil is completely dry, and water them until the water comes out the bottom of your pot. Light: Low to moderate to direct sun. Water: Allow soil to completely dry out between waterings.
If you’ve been on Instagram at any point in the last year, you’ve probably seen this plant in at least one advertisement. They are recognizable by their leaves, which grow with natural holes, earning them the nickname Swiss-cheese plant. This process is called fenestration. Monstera like medium light, high humidity and well-draining soil. Light: Moderate to high. Water: Allow soil to dry out between waterings.

What was the biggest design decision you made in this project? Putting the wallpaper on the ceiling instead of the walls. It could have made the space feel even smaller, but with the high-mounted window coverings and accessible natural light, it enhanced the space and gave it a fashionable couture identity, unlike any other bedroom. What did you do to solve your clients’ problems in this space? New construction spaces like this master bedroom can feel very cookie-cutter and lack character. To fix this, I wanted to create an intimate, moody space that felt like a boutique hotel, yet comfortable, collected and a livable sanctuary. What are your tips for readers who want to create a similar space? Don’t be afraid to go bold. Mix patterns, textures and metals. Select statement furniture and lighting that make a big impact. By combining bold colors, layered fabrics and glam finishes, you can create a livable yet boutique hotel feel in your bedroom.
Amber Guyton is a self-taught designer driven by ideas that make people feel good. Her goal with every project is to bring a sense of belonging, acceptance and peace that improves her clients’ lives through personal, creative spaces. With a combination of whimsical, midcentury modern flair, fun Southern culture and lots of color, every project is an adventure.

What was the biggest problem you wanted to solve with this project? Our clients wanted more space for gatherings and to keep plenty of natural light in the interior of their home. We extended an existing screened-in porch and installed floor-to-ceiling windows and a 16-foot double-sliding door to allow plenty of natural light into their home. What was your favorite part of this living room project? We took their existing fireplace—the outside of which used to be the exterior of their home—and had to engineer a way to make it functional to enjoy from both sides. Opening up the backside of the fireplace really pulled the two spaces together. What was the most important design decision you made? Without the design and layout of the windows and doors, the space would be dark and less inviting. The homeowners are both avid outdoorsmen, and this living room helps bring the outdoors in.

This approach works in conjunction with her desire to create more than unique spaces, and results in life-changing designs.
What are your tips for readers who want to create a similar space? A simple paint job was a game-changer for this project. Get a professional painter. They will know the right paint to use to help you achieve the right finish and ensure durability. What did you do to solve your clients’ problems in this project? We wanted this space to function as a gathering space and as a place for meal preparation, taking it from a traditional kitchen to something more modern. We lowered the original two-tiered island and added a couple of inches to increase its seating capacity. We also changed a four-burner stove to a five-burner stove with a pop-up downdraft. What was your favorite part of this particular design? The lighting. Adding modern lighting and under-cabinet lights brightened up the kitchen, and replacing the existing light bulbs with daylight bulbs gave the cabinets and countertops a crisp, white look.

{From The Founder} My Double Life Two Worlds Collide in A Beautifully Natural Way Many of you know me and our Best Self Atlanta team from Best Self photoshoots, Over 40 & Fabulous!, Amazing One-Hour Makeovers, So You Want To Write a Book and many other Best Self community events. Well, the truth is we all have another life and love that preceded Best Self by more than 10 years!
My Home Improvement is our sister publication that includes a community of designers, remodelers, home service pros and homeowners who take a great deal of interest and pride in creating their “best home” and making it their sanctuary and happy place.

Many of the same people show interest in both of these communities because they are commonly comprised of women, age 35+, who are leading the way in making key decisions for their family’s health and home.
That said, there are so many ways that our journey to be our best self extends to our home life. An amazing book written a few years ago by Moll Anderson called “Change Your Home, Change Your Life” punctuates the tremendous effect our surroundings have on our mental, emotional and physical wellness. The pandemic has certainly helped to make that case even stronger as we all have spent more time in our homes than ever before. It has been fun the last few months to see our publications intersect in other ways. Many of our Best Self leaders and partners have discovered and participated in the My Home Improvement community and vice versa. {From The Editor} The Holiday Hustle The holiday season is my favorite. Not only do I love the festive decor (I’m one of those people who puts the Christmas tree up right after Halloween!), but I also love the countless opportunities to get together with family and friends. Each year I fly out to Omaha for sisters-giving with my sister, Jackie, and every Christmas is spent with extended family in my hometown of Augusta. However, between the traveling, the gift-getting for 10+ family members, and the friend and office gatherings, things can get a little bit ... hectic. While I can’t grant you, or myself, a house elf to help with all the things to do and places to be, I am happy to say this issue of Best Self is here to provide you with some of the holiday help we all undoubtedly need.
The Perfect Present When it comes to presents, I think some of the best things money can buy aren’t things at all, but rather experiences. From facials to luxurious lash extensions and everything in between, our Best of 2021 award winners (page 15) offer up a wide range of services your special someone would surely love to receive. Don’t forget to grab a little something for your co-workers, teachers and friends, too. Despite having a mother with some of the best home cooking in three counties and a sister with impeccable design taste, I am generally helpless when it comes to pulling together a holiday meal that looks and tastes good. That’s why I’m so excited to present our Holiday Entertaining feature (page 37), where you’ll find festive decor inspiration from designer extraordinaire Kevin Francis O’Gara and tasty recipes from top Atlanta chefs like Deborah VanTrece, Jenny Levinson and Kevin Gillespie. Plus, zen mom blogger Liz Carlile offers up some much-needed advice for self-care for when it all gets to be a little much. And, hey, if all else fails, Allen Parker of Good Word Brewing has a fantastic hot toddy recipe to help wash all your worries away.

Grandma Lue’s Spinach Rice A side dish that will make you love eating your spinach
Ingredients • 3 cups cooked white rice, chilled • 2 large eggs, beaten • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter • ½ cup chopped celery • ½ cup chopped red bell pepper • 1 cup chopped red onion • 4 pounds fresh baby spinach, washed and trimmed • 1 cup chopped marinated artichokes • 12 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature • ½ cup sour cream • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 2 cloves garlic, minced • ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper • ½ teaspoon onion powder • ½ teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
Instructions Preheat oven to 350°. Generously grease a deep casserole or 13 x 9 inch baking pan. In large bowl, stir together cold rice and beaten eggs. In large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add celery, peppers, onions and spinach and cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 to 3 minutes, until onions are translucent and spinach is wilted. Reduce heat to medium and stir in artichokes, cream cheese, sour cream, Parmesan and garlic. Cook 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally until cream cheese has melted and all ingredients are well combined. Add spinach-cheese mixture to rice. Stir in black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and salt. Pour into prepared casserole dish and cover with foil. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the top is nicely browned. Let rest for 15 minutes before serving. bestselfatlanta.com

A Georgia native, Kevin Gillespie grew up surrounded by his large, extended family, where he watched his granny, Geneva Gillespie, cook each day. After rising to fame following his finalist appearance on Bravo’s “Top Chef,” the red-bearded, tattooed chef has established some of the most recognizable restaurants in Atlanta, including Gunshow and Revival. While perusing a cookbook on royal court cuisine, he stumbled upon an extravagant dish fit for a special Gillespie Thanksgiving: a whole pork loin with apples, dates and duck liver. He adapted it into this dish, which includes bacon fat and dried fruit. After some inspiration from her wedding venue’s fresh-baked stack, she aspired to create the best chocolate chip cookie around. The aha moment to start her company Monster Cravings Cookies came when people would ask, “Where did you buy these cookies?” Since then, she’s turned her beloved pop-up into a now permanent stall at the new Chattahoochee Food Works. • 1½ cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature • 1 cup packed light brown sugar • ½ cup granulated sugar
• 1 large egg • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract • 2 cups rolled old-fashioned oats • 1 cup dehydrated apple pieces Topping • 1 can apple pie filling • 1 cup crushed-up butter cookies of your choice • Salted caramel dessert topping
Instructions Preheat oven to 350°. Line baking pan with parchment paper. In mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. In bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, cream together butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar and vanilla until combined. Mix in egg, being careful not to overbeat. Add flour mixture and mix just until combined, then stir in oats and dehydrated apple pieces. Shape dough into 1½-inch balls, then transfer to prepared baking sheet, fitting 12 balls per sheet and spacing 2 inches apart. Bake until golden brown on edges and nearly set (center should look underbaked), about 12 to 14 minutes. As cookies are cooling, pulse butter cookies in food processor until it looks like coarse sand. When cookies are totally cooled, top with a tablespoon of apple pie filling, crushed butter cookies and a drizzle of caramel. bestselfatlanta.com

It’s that time of year again! The holiday travel season is upon us. Will you be joining the millions of Americans lugging their suitcases through a busy airport or in and out of a car? If so, here are some tips that may help you avoid back pain during your travels.
If you are traveling by car, try these tips to avoid neck and back pain: 1. Use proper body mechanics to lift your luggage into and out of your vehicle. When you are lifting your suitcase, remember to bend at the knees, draw it close to you and then stand up. 2. Support your lower back during your drive. If your seat does not have adequate lumbar support, a small travel pillow or rolled-up towel will give you added support and comfort. 3. Prolonged sitting while on a long car trip can aggravate your back pain. Stop every few hours and get out of the car to stretch and walk around. Bonus: this will help prevent blood clots, too. 4. Take at least one meal break during your trip. This gives you time to walk around, change positions and stretch your back out.
If you are traveling by airplane, here are some tips to help avoid neck and back pain: 1. When you are at the airport, rent a pull cart for transporting your luggage to help reduce the risk of injuring your back. 2. Invest in a suitcase with wheels. By pulling the suitcase instead of carrying a heavy bag through the airport, you may prevent a back injury.
3. Avoid carrying heavy objects, such as a laptop or duffle bag, by a shoulder strap. 4. If you are flying a long distance, avoid sitting in your seat for too long. Stand up and stretch your lower back. Walk around in the airplane every few hours. 5. Pack light. If your suitcase is too heavy to lift, you may want to pack a second one and divide heavy items between the two suitcases. 6. Be careful when lifting your carry-on luggage into the overhead compartment on the airplane. If your carry-on is too heavy or too bulky, you can place your neck and lower back at risk of an injury when lifting it above your head and placing it into the compartment. 2021 Partners in Health Resolution Checklist for Better Men’s Health By Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA
As January arrives, the local gyms fill with the good-intentioned. By March, front row parking is readily available for those who want to save some steps before working out. “Exercise more” is usually at the top of most resolution checklists. Perhaps we are taking the wrong approach for our resolutions. Here are some tips for making New Year’s resolutions—in essence, a “checklist” for your “resolution checklist”: • Avoid lofty goals—Losing 30 pounds may be your ambition. However, eliminating late night snacks may be a more achievable goal that will contribute to your overall objective. • Be specific—We all want to exercise more. A more specific approach would be taking a 30-minute walk every night after dinner. • Shorten the list—It is very difficult to focus on more than one or two significant goals at the same time. For instance, if you have a long to-do list, you may never clear that list. However, if you commit to the most important task each day, you will accomplish 365 items in a year. This approach is much more achievable than “I will procrastinate less.” • Tell a friend —Sharing your goals with others will increase your accountability and garner their support. • Have a contingency plan—An exercise app on your mobile device can be a good alternative when traveling. • Reward yourself—Having a piece of cake may not be the best reward for sticking to your diet, but having a meal out with friends may check another box on the list. • Plan ahead—Take tomorrow’s exercise clothes out tonight. Plan lunches for the week on Sunday. Most importantly, don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to make your resolution checklist.
• Set a schedule—Goals that live on a calendar are seldom forgotten. Goals without a deadline are seldom accomplished. • Track your progress—Identify what is measurable about your goal. Often, it’s as easy as logging the number of successful days. This insight will motivate you to stay on course. • Allow forgiveness— When hitting the bottom of that bag of chips, it’s easy to give up on healthy eating for the rest of the day (or week). Consider this misstep as a mere pitstop and jump back in the race. Most importantly, learn from these detours so that you can more easily recognize and avoid them in the future. • Commit to 30 days—Behaviors often become habits when practiced for 30 days. A well-designed resolution may also have a financial benefit. For instance, less procrastination can lead to less late fees. Spending less money on our habits also leaves a bigger budget for purchasing experiences rather than things. Yes! Sleep apnea increases an individual’s risk of high blood pressure. Not only is the risk of hypertension higher, but the increased strain on the cardiovascular system caused by sleep apnea can lead to other heart problems. Patients may experience a higher rate of heart attack and stroke. Sleep apnea causes more than annoying snoring and interrupted sleep; it is a serious medical condition that requires professional intervention. However, addressing sleep apnea can improve your health and quality of life.
However, vision loss, kidney failure, impotence and heart disease can result from high blood pressure.
How Can Patients Lower Their Health Risks?
What is Hypertension?
If you have high blood pressure because of sleep apnea, there’s hope. While your medical doctor can treat the high blood pressure, you won’t address the root cause until you deal with the sleep apnea. For as long as your sleep apnea is unresolved, you’ll continue to experience side effects, like fatigue, memory loss and hypertension.
Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. Blood pressure refers to the measurement of the force against the walls of blood vessels from blood circulating in the body. The measure includes the volume of blood pumped and the resistance to the blood flow in your arteries.

The narrowing of the blood vessels makes it harder to move blood through the body, leading to increased blood pressure. In people without sleep apnea, blood pressure typically drops during sleep. However, those suffering from sleep apnea do not experience this needed nightly decrease in blood pressure. Instead, their blood pressure goes higher, causing their heart to work harder while they sleep.
What Are the Health Risks of Increased Blood Pressure? Some patients with high blood pressure show no noticeable symptoms. If you suffer from sleep apnea, keep a check on your blood pressure. Even if you don’t have the common symptoms associated with hypertension, you can still experience the health risks related to high blood pressure. The most severe risk from high blood pressure is a heart attack or stroke.
