My vinyl obsession Last month, I took a weekend trip to New York City ostensibly to visit friends, but I must admit shopping for vinyl records took up an inordinate amount of my time. Yes, folks, I am one of those nerdy white guys. I clearly remember when I fell in love with music and the satisfying crackle and pop as the needle dropped on a vinyl record. My parents bought me one of those plastic Fisher-Price record players when I was a toddler and upgraded it when I was 5 or 6 to a real record player. By the late 1970s, we had a hi-fi system with turntable, eight-track player and gigantic speakers in the family room. My dad listened to country and polka (don’t ask!), mom listened to Elvis and Bruce Springsteen and I became obsessed with Fleetwood Mac. “Rumors” was my first serious, adult album. I was 10. I continued to collect records in the 1980s and early 90s (especially Kate Bush), but as CDs took over the market and vinyl almost disappeared, I stored my beloved collection of 100 or so records in a crate in the back of my closet. They moved with me from apartment to apartment because I never could give them up, Collin Kelley even when I didn’t own a turntable. collin@atlantaintown A few years ago, I bought one of those suitcase-style Crosley paper.com turntables. It was retro cute and low-fi to the point of being laughable, but my old Joni Mitchell albums sounded pretty good on it. I knew it was time to upgrade when I bought David Bowie’s final album, “Blackstar,” and it sounded ridiculous on the Crosley. Last year, as a Christmas present to myself, I invested in a real turntable and speaker set-up. I’m not ashamed to admit that I got a bit tearyeyed listening to how pristine Bowie sounded on “Lazarus,” while the thundering drums of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” were, once again, a revelation. I don’t care what people say: vinyl DOES sound better than any tape, CD or streaming site. You’ll never be able to argue me out of it. My ears know better. So, between visiting friends, I haunted Manhattan’s record stores and I plan to make another pilgrimage to Amoeba Records in Amoeba Records Los Angeles when I visit this summer. In the meantime, you might find me digging through the crates at Criminal Records or Wax ‘n Facts in Little Five Points or over at Wuxtry or Book Nook in Decatur. And if you have a clean copy of Sade’s debut album “Diamond Life” you’re willing to part with, get in touch.

Crime Plan

New APD chief outlines vision for public safety By Collin Kelley

ew Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields has outlined her public safety plan for the city. Shields said during her first press conference in January and in a follow up interview with Atlanta INtown that she had been working with colleagues reviewing critical needs for the city and acknowledged that while crime is down, APD can do better. “There has been a 27 percent reduction in crime under Mayor Reed,” Shields said, “but when people believe their safety is an issue, data is useless. I think people are tired of hearing data.” The chief said reduction of violent crime is the department’s number one priority. Shields said APD would be contacting property owners and managers at a handful of apartment complexes that have some of the most violent crime in the city. She also said the department would be focusing on repeat offenders “who have no ambition in life except to victimize others.” Shields said repeat offenders are causing most of the crime, and many have 25 to 50 arrests, but gaps in the criminal justice system allow them back on the streets. “We are going to rein in the relatively small number of repeat offenders doing most of the crime,” she promised. “We have to get everyone on the same page – police, prosecutors, judges – and acknowledge that these gaps in the system exist,” Shields said. “There has to be a change in how criminals are sentenced and how bonds are issued. It could be changed right now, but they’ve gotten into the practice of doing things in a certain way. It perpetuates the cycle of criminal behavior and the offenders know there aren’t any consequences.” Another high priority will be working to curb juvenile crime. “The juvenile justice system is not working,” Shields said, noting that five juveniles in the city have more than 100 arrests between them at such early ages. Shields said young, black males are growing up with nothing in their lives, including absent or disinterested parents, no structure, education and often hungry for food. That leads to joining gangs and engaging in criminal behavior. “APD has no desire to lock up young, black men. Too many young, black men have been locked up for no reason, but there has to be a middle ground between locking them up and sending them back to nothing. These kids matter to us.” She said APD would be working with partners to develop programs to reach out to the top 100 juvenile offenders and steer them away from criminality. One tool will be

the new At-Promise Youth Center on the Westside. This 17,000 square-foot facility will be transformed into a state-of-the-art space with specialized services for youth and residents focused on educational advancement, mental health, social/emotional learning and workforce development. Speaking about recent armed robberies on the Atlanta Beltline’s Eastside Trail, Shield said there is “very little crime there, but when something happens it garners an enormous amount of attention.” But the chief is sensitive to the city’s popular amenity and said upgrading lighting, adding more cameras and better signage so users know where they are on the trail are on the way. She said officers’ hours have been shifted so they are patrolling Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields the BeltLine later, especially when people are leaving bars and restaurants along the trail. Shields said improving APD’s technology, recruitment and retention of police officers and a new four-year pay plan were also on her vision list for the future.

City launches transportation plan update initiative The Atlanta Department of Planning and Community Development has launched an initiative to update the city’s existing Comprehensive Transportation Plan. The initiative will also serve as a critical element of the Atlanta City Design Project, which envisions what Atlanta should look like decades from now, as well as guide future decisions on the growth and development. “As our city continues to experience unprecedented growth, the City of Atlanta is committed to ensuring connectivity and mobility for residents and visitors,” Mayor Kasim Reed said in a statement. “The new transportation plan is an essential part of making Atlanta an even more competitive city in the region, and will also create a greater quality of life for our pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. We invite all residents to help shape Atlanta’s transportation future.” The transportation planning process seeks to be open and transparent and will

include extensive community engagement. The engagement process will consist of community meetings, social media polling and pop-up events throughout the city. The Department of Planning and Community Development also created a Stakeholder Advisory Committee and is seeking local community members dedicated to advancing Atlanta as a national model for transportation. The $300 million TSPLOST and $2.6 billion MARTA expansion plans will help leverage the work already being completed under the $250 million Renew Atlanta infrastructure bond program. As part of the program, the City of Atlanta began synchronizing traffic signals, adding new bike lanes, repaving roads, repairing bridges and establishing publicprivate partnerships to enhance the local transportation system starting in 2015. Historic Battle of Atlanta painting moves to Buckhead The historic Battle of Atlanta painting has been moved from its home in Grant Park to the new custom-built 23,000-square-foot Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker Cyclorama Building at the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead. A team of Atlanta History Center staff experts and cyclorama conservationists orchestrated the transfer of one of the city’s rarest historic treasures, which debuted in 1886 and was housed in the Grant Park facility since 1921. The team’s processes included strength-testing the canvas, documenting the current condition of the paint layers and fiberglass backing, and conducting stabilization conservation efforts needed prior to moving the painting. The painting, 42 feet tall with a circumference of 359 feet, is estimated to weigh 12,000 pounds. After it was carefully separated along two existing seams, the two 6,000-pound sections were successfully rolled around two 45-foot-tall custom-built steel spools. Weighing roughly 6,200 pounds each, the spools were individually lifted out the Grant Park building by a crane through two 7-foot-square holes cut into the concrete roof. After being loaded on the backs of two flatbed trucks with the help of a second crane, they were trucked to the Atlanta History Center on Feb. 10. Cranes then carefully lowered the scrolls through a 10-foot-square opening in the roof of the new Cyclorama building. Over the next several months, the painting will be unscrolled in its new home for a full restoration, including the recreation of seven feet of sky across the top of its full circumference. The full Cyclorama experience, complete with the addition of

the restored 1856 Texas locomotive and enhanced interpretation and exhibitions, is projected to open in fall 2018. The Battle of Atlanta first opened to the public in Minneapolis in 1886 as a tribute to Northern victory and was moved to Atlanta in 1892. In the nearly 125 years that it has been on display in this city, it has been the subject of periodic reinterpretation. At times it was held up as a proud symbol of the capital of the “New South” rising from the ashes of Sherman’s destruction. It has also been viewed as an anachronism because of its interpretation associated with the philosophy of the “Lost Cause” and white supremacy.

Richie Before the outcome of the 2016 presidential election and the 2017 women’s marches that followed, Jina Sanone put her corporate career on hold to pursue her lifelong interest in women’s leadership. After a year of researching national and local efforts, finding her niche and forming partnerships, she’s ready to launch Elect Her. It’s a nonprofit focused on the targeted recruitment of progressive women in viable districts to run for elected positions in Georgia. “We don’t have enough women representing us in government,” Sanone explained. Georgia ranks near the bottom on that score. No woman currently serves in an elected statewide office in Georgia, and the state has never elected a woman governor or woman senator. At the state level, women comprise just a quarter of the General Assembly. “It’s really about building a pipeline,” Sanone said. “Women need to be asked and often aren’t.” Elect her will recruit accomplished women active in their communities,

The City of Atlanta will allocate $3 million in TSPLOST revenue this year to build the first segment of the Proctor Creek Greenway, a seven-mile bicycle and pedestrian trail spanning from Maddox Park to the Chattahoochee River. Mayor Kasim Reed announced during his Feb. 2 State of the City address that Atlanta will pursue a referendum for a one-tenth of a penny sales tax for a dedicated source of funding for the arts. such as alumni of leadership trainings or referrals from advocacy groups. Since the presidential election more women are starting to raise their hands. “Women are coming to us – motivated right now by national politics but wanting to also have a local impact,” Sanone said. Sanone and her growing team, which includes newly elected state representative Rennitta Shannon (District 84), are ready to provide guidance to help women decide whether or not to throw their hat into the ring. Elect Her will help each potential candidate think through, “What does she want to accomplish? What interests her – local, state or federal office? What does she have to run on?” Sanone explained. When applicable, Elect Her will refer these women

to partners that offer training, like Georgia’s Win list and Vote Run Lead. Simultaneously, Elect Her is building a list of districts using election results and new research to map out opportunities where women can win at the city, county, state or federal level. Women’s leadership and politics has always been in Sanone’s blood. During her 17 years at Delta, she founded She Leads, an organization that brings awareness to barriers women leaders face in their careers. Prior to that she worked for a polling firm that specialized in candidate and issue strategy. Through Elect Her, Sanone will focus on the 2018 elections but recognizes this effort is a marathon not a sprint. “Targeted recruiting can move the needle, drive results and elect more women,” Sanone said. City Council votes to return deeds on 10 schools By Collin Kelley The Atlanta City Council voted unanimously last month to turn over deeds it has held on nine vacant school properties to Atlanta Public Schools. The vote came after January’s agreement to hand over the deed to George W. Adair Elementary School in southwest Atlanta. APS wants to sell off the property for redevelopment. The city and APS have been wrangling over the school properties for years, with the issue eventually winding up in court. Last year, Mayor Kasim Reed said he would not turn over the properties until APS adopted the affordable housing policy similar to the city’s own. The issue of ownership dates back to 1973, when the city created the Atlanta Board of Education to maintain and operate its public schools. The properties approved for quick

claim deed include Adair, Anderson Park Elementary, Preston Arkwright Elementary, Milton Elementary, West Atlanta Elementary, Rosalie H. Wright Elementary, Claire Drive Facility, Daleview Drive Facility, Adamsville Primary School and Frederick Wilson Benteen Elementary. “I am pleased that we are coming to a resolution on the future ownership of these properties, most of which are vacant properties,” said City Councilmember Joyce Sheperd, sponsor of the authorizing legislation. “If we can develop a viable economic development plan for these properties in conjunction with the surrounding communities, APS and potential buyers, it will certainly be a winwin outcome for all of us.” Last May, the Atlanta City Council adopted an affordable housing policy for the purpose of promoting opportunities for mixed-income housing developments

throughout the city and promoting housing affordability to minimize the number of households that must pay more than 30 percent of their income in rent or mortgage payments and to encourage the development and preservation of mixedincome residential areas. A developer has already released plans to redevelop the historic Adair property in the Adair Park neighborhood. The school has been closed since the early 1970s. The developer is proposing to convert the circa-1911 school building into a mixed-use facility that will include artist studios and retail on the ground floor with housing for artists on the top floors. Shepherd said the developer is committed to “restoration” in addition to renovation, concentrating on preserving the historical character and context of the building and affordable housing. Lights, action, camera! Atlanta is Hollywood East these days so to live here is to perch on the precipice of TV and film stardom. For me, it all started in 2011 when I was still the race director for the (always sold out) Romp and Stomp 5K in Cabbagetown. In exchange for the ability to purchase two late entries, some casting agent offered me the role of an extra on a show I had never heard of called “The Walking Dead.” I accepted the bribe, but passed along the spot to a friend… and probably missed my big break. Next up was a letter in our mailbox telling us that our house would be perfect for the Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez vehicle called “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” I was certain Kristen and I would be fast friends with JLo and Cam (I call her Cam). And it didn’t seem too big a leap to think that they would just insist that our cute kids be in the movie, too. I envisioned the challenge of paying college tuitions giving way to the task of convincing my rich and famous offspring that college was still a worthwhile experience. Apparently, they chose some other house. And, apparently, that movie stunk anyway, so crisis averted. Admittedly though, my TV and film career hit something of a lull after that. A crew of about 25 took a full day to get a picture of models sharing a Coke around our kitchen island and that is fascinating to me. Maybe Scorsese will see the display when he’s shopping in Kroger and be like, “Where is this kitchen? I need this location!” I wonder who will be starring in the tank-less hot water heater commercial? I can easily act the part. I love hot showers and, if tastefully done, I’m willing to do partial nudity.

Decatur Active Living will host the annual Touch-a-Truck event on Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the East Lake MARTA station north parking lot. The free community event gives children of all ages an opportunity to touch, explore and see their favorite trucks or equipment on wheels. The City of Decatur and DeKalb County dump trucks, fire trucks, tractors, police cars and motorcycles and many other types of vehicles will be on display. City Schools of Decatur will have a school bus on site and children have the opportunity to learn about school bus safety. The city is also encouraging visitors to ride their bike to the event to have it registered by the Decatur Police Department. All those who ride their bike to the event will also receive a special bike pin. Since March is National Nutrition Month, bring any canned or non-perishable food item to donate, too. Parking will be limited, so take MARTA, walk or ride your bike to the event. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to April 15.

Community clinic provides care to vulnerable By Isadora Pennington In 2015, over 28 million Americans age 65 and under did not have health insurance, and that number could increase if the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is reformed or repealed by Congress. As government-funded aid to low income families drops off, many clinics and organizations that provide care are seeing an increase in patients. One of those organizations is Community Advanced Practice Nurses (CAPN), a local nonprofit made up of medical professionals who help those in

the most need, including women, children, the homeless and members of the LGBTQ community. CAPN operates eight clinics in the Atlanta area, with all but the main office located within shelters. CAPN was founded in 1998 by members of the Georgia Nurses Foundation Women and Children’s Clinic. Today, the clinics provide aid to around 3,000 people per year. Of those people, roughly 70 percent are women and 40 percent are children. An estimated 25 people come through the doors of any given clinic daily, seeking physical and mental healthcare, as well as patient

The clinic also offers 500 hours of student training for aspiring nursing students through a residency program at Morehouse College, as well as training for students from Emory University and Georgia State University. Services available through the CAPN clinics include vaccinations, physical exams, assessments, gynecologic care, reproductive care, breast exams, family planning, STI testing, psychological counseling, and substance abuse counseling. Many of those who seek aid through these centers have no money or other recourse, and these services fill a vital need for anything that an Emergency Room visit would not be able to address. “We don’t turn anybody away,” said director Connie Buchanan, who has been with CAPN since its inception. The clinic is always operating at capacity, and nurses filter in day after day, tending to walk in patients and their families with the kind of personalized care one wouldn’t expect to find in a lowincome facility. Buchanan said many clinics operating in metro Atlanta and across the country find themselves at risk now, with foundation support disappearing in the wake of ACA reform. Fortunately, CAPN

is structured in such a way that the clinic is able to “follow the need, rather than follow the money,” as Buchanan puts it. Their meager funding is just enough to get by, but it also prevents CAPN from fully addressing every division and group that needs extensive help. Avoiding “mission creep” remains at the forefront of the clinic’s modus operandi; they must constantly reevaluate to ensure that they don’t stray too far from their core values and spread their resources too thin to effectively help their clients. Additionally, the needs of their clientele have changed and shifted throughout the years. “Just when you think you understand the situation, something changes,” Buchanan said. Despite the anxiety surrounding the repeal of ACA and decreased funding for CAPN and similar institutions, the clinic is not a depressing place. The vibe is familial and compassionate, and the passion of the providers who work there is palpable. “Our patients have so much hope, it gives us hope,” explained Buchanan, who says she often finds herself feeling tired and perhaps sad, but not hopeless. “At the end of the day, I can see that I did something.” To find out more about CAPN, visit capn.org or call (404) 658-1500.

t’s not the latest phone, but it’s the latest in skydiving thrills. iFLY opened in Atlanta last November and has been booked solid ever since. iFLY is a vertical wind tunnel used by professional skydivers to practice their skills. While it doesn’t create the stomachin-your-throat feeling of jumping from a plane, the sensation of balancing on air has to be experienced to truly be understood, plus you won’t have to feverishly burp your way down a la “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” “Clean running electric engines and the most advanced propellers draw air up through the flight chamber and create a smooth cushion of air,” said operations manager Ebonee Clarke. “We can adjust the air to be perfect for each person who is flying.” iFLY has nearly 30 locations in the states, including the futuristic building at I-75 and Cobb Parkway. The increase and popularity of these wind tunnels has created a whole new genre of sport, bodyflight, which includes freestyle and formation flying. While skydiving requires you to step out of an airplane at more than two miles above the ground and can cost over $300, iFLY gives you a taste of skydiving for less than half the cost. The ‘Earn Your Wings’ package includes two, one-minute flights for $69.95 and the ‘Spread Your Wings’ package includes four flights for $109.95. Watching other fliers while awaiting your departure time builds anticipation. After checking in, the flight deck viewing offers a perfect spot for to watch people taking their flights. Then, a certified

instructor will provide preflight training instruction on the proper body position for flying and the hand signals the instructors will use to guide you. The last step is to gear up with a helmet, flight suit and goggles and enter the flight chamber. The flights do fly by. The first flight is focused, taking the advice of the instructor who is tweaking your body position. By the time I was in the perfect diamond shape, I was only floating for a few seconds before the allotted minute was up. For the second flight, you are ready to try to fly independently. I kept my chin up, literally, and started to understand the minute adjustments needed to balance, not unlike floating in water. I really took off when, for an additional $10, I went on a high flight where I spun like I was on an antigravity merry-go-round to nearly the top of the wind tunnel. Afterwards, our instructor was able to show off his skills. Ryan Schorer is a former professional skydiver with experience in 40 person formations. iFLY cranked the fan up 100 percent, or about 120-miles-perhour, and Schorer demonstrated the art of air walking, tilting his feet ever so slightly to shoot up to the top of the tunnel. iFLY offers flight packages so anyone can take up bodyflight as a competitive sport. Park Pride awards money for greenspace improvements

ark Pride has announced that $820,000 has been granted to 17 community groups in Atlanta and DeKalb to fund capital park improvements. To date, Park Pride has awarded over $4.8 million to projects that include new playgrounds, boardwalks and bridges, improved signage, new trails and exercise equipment, and more. Park Pride introduced its matching grant programs in 2004, offering awards of varying amounts to groups seeking to revitalize their community greenspaces. Award recipients receive matching funds through three distinct grants: Legacy Grants (large grants of $50,000 and up), funded by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation; Community Building Grants ($2,500-$50,000), funded by The Home Depot Foundation; and Small Change Grants (up to $2,500), funded by the Cecil B. Day Foundation. “Due to the support of our funders, Park Pride and the Friends of the Park groups we serve are able to complete valuable and much needed park improvements for the greener good of our city,” Park Pride’s Associate Director Allison Barnett said. “They truly make a positive difference for the families and communities that enjoy greenspaces.” “Friends of the Park groups recognize that great parks increase the quality of life in their neighborhoods,” said Ayanna Williams, Park Pride’s Director of Community Building and responsible for the Friends of the Park Program. “I’m proud of the amazing park improvements the Friends groups have accomplished with the support of Park Pride’s grants, improvements that may not have been possible otherwise.”

Legacy Grants Park Pride awarded Legacy Grants to six community groups. These grants are only available to groups within the City of Atlanta. ■ Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy to replace the playground, which has been plagued by flooding and sewage spills, with a new community designed playground located in a more accessible location on higher ground. ■ Blue Heron Nature Preserve for the expansion of its permeable trail system, the “Blueway,” that will highlight the rich habitats along Mill and Nancy Creeks and eventually connect with planned multiuse trails to Chastain Park and PATH400. ■ The Friends of Lake Claire Park will oversee a playground renovation and build an ADA accessible overlook with shade structures to enjoy the view of the park. ■ The Friends of Little Nancy Creek Park will move forward with the implementation of phase IV of their master plan, which includes a pavilion and seating for family and community gatherings, trash/ recycling receptacles, beautification plantings and signage. ■ South Fork Conservancy will construct a pedestrian bridge across the North Fork of Peachtree Creek, providing access to the South Fork Trail from PATH400, the Atlanta BeltLine as well as the sidewalks of Buckhead. ■ The Friends of Southside Park will expand their natural surface multi-use trails including a bridge and boardwalk spanning an environmentally sensitive creek and floodplain – enhancing visitor access to the forested areas of the park and encouraging bicycling, walking or running.

Small Change Grants With the support of the Cecil B. Day Foundation, Park Pride’s Small Change Grants fund small improvements that have big impacts on park beautification. ■ The Friends of Mattie Freeland Park will replace existing wooden park benches with new tables for neighbors to enjoy at cookouts and community events. ■ Chattahoochee Now will install two benches at Standing Peachtree Park so that visitors can sit and enjoy the view of the Chattahoochee River. A new interpretive sign honoring the historic significance of the site and importance of the river will also be installed.

Community Building Grants The Home Depot Foundation provides $200,000 in support to Park Pride’s Community Building Grants, which are available to community groups located in both the City of Atlanta and DeKalb County. ■ The Friends of Bitsy Grant Tennis will construct a courtside deck at the tennis center for viewers to comfortably enjoy watching matches. ■ The Friends of Briarlake Forest Park will add amenities including picnic tables, benches, and trail signs, and will plant more native species throughout the greenspace. ■ The Friends of Henderson Park will re-design the park’s trail system, implement erosion control measures, and add new signage and provide stepping-stones at creek crossings. ■ Historic 4th Ward Park Conservancy will conduct a comprehensive planting and rejuvenation of several landscape beds in alignment with the park’s original master plan. ■ The Friends of Jennie Drake Park will continue to work towards the fulfillment of their master plan, installing a soft-surface path, distance markers, and dog-waste stations, and creating designated bird-watching areas. ■ The Friends of Johns Homestead will construct a boardwalk over a creek that had previously rendered a large portion of the park inaccessible. ■ The Friends of Peachtree Park will benefit from a new access point to the nature trail, addition of benches and exercise stations encouraging greater use from the surrounding communities.

Pollinators in Parks program gets grant While Park Pride regularly awards grants to community park projects, the nonprofit is also the recipient of a $60,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation for the “Pollinators in Parks” pilot initiative to increase the presence and impact of pollinator gardens in five Atlanta parks. Through this grant, Park Pride and the Atlanta Botanical Garden hope to improve the city’s long-term biodiversity, ecological health and sustainability. “In urban environments, community gardens represent little green islands for insect pollinators, like bees and butterflies, which are keystone species in food webs,” explained Melina Lozano Durán, Pollinator Garden Coordinator with the Atlanta Botanical Garden. “Pollinator gardens are not only necessary to help natural ecosystems and their plant and animal communities to thrive within cities, but they also nurture our connection to nature.” The five parks selected to be part of the “Pollinators in Parks” pilot project include: Blue Heron Nature Preserve (Buckhead), Four Corners Park (South Atlanta), Gilliam Park (East Atlanta), Grove Park (West Atlanta) and Welch Street Park (Southwest Atlanta). “Cast your bucket where you are,” said the celebrated orator Booker T. Washington more than one hundred years ago. In my career, I’ve tried to do this – to make the most of the situation where I have found myself – by focusing on environmental issues in my hometown, in my state. Despite the alarming actions being taken in our nation’s capital that could destroy environmental progress achieved in the past 40 years, I take some comfort in work being done here at home. A good example is the Georgia Water Coalition, which cast its bucket at the State Capitol 15 years ago. In a move unusual for that time, four environmental organizations and a foundation developed a collaborative agenda and shared financial resources. Importantly, they learned how to work with different organizational styles and cultures to achieve common goals. Today, the Water Coalition is made up of more than 230 groups including garden clubs, homeowner and lake associations, rural residents, business owners, sportsmen’s clubs, conservation organizations, professional associations and religious groups. The Water Coalition’s bipartisan work is galvanized around a defining principle: the surface waters and groundwater of Georgia are public resources to be managed by the state in the public interest and a sustainable manner to protect natural systems, meet human and By Sally Bethea in economic needs and account for the effects of climate change. This year’s legislative goal: agreement on a clear method to measure buffers for regulatory purposes. Legislative prediction: the matter will be put in a study committee where it may die. A rollback bill proposed by Sen. Frank Ginn would prohibit local governments from charging a stormwater collection and disposal fee, as some now do, for properties that use the government’s stormwater system to transport water offsite. Not only are these fees an excellent revenue source to address flooding and storm-related pollution, the state should not limit local options, according to the Water Coalition and allies. Legislative prediction: The proposal is on its way to a study committee, this time for a welcome burial. Money is always a major topic during the 40-day legislative session. This year, Gov. Deal’s proposed budget for Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division is meager, as usual, which will continue the downward spiral in the agency’s ability to carry out its responsibilities. As the new head of the U.S. EPA threatens to dismantle his federal agency, there will be more pressure on state agencies to protect our water, air and land. With limited state funds and diminishing political will to handle additional responsibilities, the Water Coalition and similar alliances will become increasingly essential to defend our natural resources. Andy Warhol exhibit coming to High this summer

he High Museum of Art will mount the exclusive exhibition “Andy Warhol: Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation” from June 11 through Sept. 3. According to the High, the comprehensive retrospective is the largest exhibition of its kind presented and features more than 250 prints and ephemera by Andy Warhol, including such iconic screenprint portfolios as “Marilyn Monroe” (1967), “Campbell’s Soup I” (1968), “Electric Chair” (1971) and “Mao” (1972). Printmaking featured prominently throughout Warhol’s career, beginning with his earliest work as a commercial illustrator in the 1950s. He discovered the process of silkscreen printing in 1962 and produced his first portfolio of screenprints, “Marilyn Monroe,” in 1967 at his legendary Factory studio in New York. Subsequently, silkscreen printing became synonymous with Warhol’s career from the Factory Years through the end of his life. The works in the exhibition are drawn exclusively from collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation in Portland, Ore. Remarkable for their nearly exhaustive range, the Schnitzer Collections offer an unparalleled opportunity to explore the breadth of Warhol’s influential graphic production over the course of four decades. Familiar Face Artist JD Koth creates enigmatic sculpture for Atlanta BeltLine By Isadora Pennington A familiar work of art has become a permanent installation under the Highland Avenue bridge along the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail. You may remember iterations of this image in a variety of places throughout the city, including a rock face at Piedmont Park and tucked away in a phone booth in East Atlanta. The sculpture – a face with multiple ascending eyes, mouths, and a temple between its eyes – is the creation of local sculptor JD Koth. Koth has been an artist for as long as he can remember, though in his early years he was mostly into doodling. Later on, as a teenager, he took up photography, specifically with an interest in abandoned places. This artistic expression was a common theme in his life, but he didn’t take art seriously until he began attending Georgia State University, where he got a BFA in Sculpture. While still a student, Koth began experimenting with making sculptures out of twigs and sticks behind the Edgewood Sculpture Building. He proposed a concept for the 2011 Art on the BeltLine and was selected to display his “Twisting Passage” sculptures. These creations, both whimsical and otherworldly, caught the eye of a local Disney production, “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” for which he was commissioned to create sculptures. In all, Koth has participated in six Art on the BeltLine events, and one image has emerged time and again in his work: the multi-faceted face. Initially, he wasn’t keen on

leaving his name or an author’s mark on his street work, as the mystery is part of the appeal. “People stumble upon it and are like, ‘where did that come from?’” Koth said. The image has some elements that ring familiar, such as the temple similar to those found in Mayan and Incan sites. The image first occurred to Koth in the midst of a vivid dream. In the vision, he heard a strange sound in the distance and followed it to a futuristic yet ancient temple. Once inside, he saw creatures, all with multiple eyes and mouths, and geometric shapes coming out of their foreheads. In his dream state, Koth began wondering if he himself could also make those noises and morph his face. He awoke, inspired. “I know it’s pretty corny, making sculptures of your dreams, but it just left an impression,” he said. For the permanent installment on the BeltLine, Koth has made his largest sculpture of the image yet. Tucked away in a corner of the Mammal Gallery, he has been diligently working on the 200-pound sculpture made of fiberglass, marble dust composite and resin for around four months. He uses these same skills and creative talents in his day job as well, where he works as art and exhibits director for the Malone Design and Fabrication company. There, he fabricates large-scale sculptural installations for a variety of clients, such as the Georgia Aquarium, John Hines Wildlife Refuge, and numerous other wildlife facilities across the country. Parade, music, drinking to mark St. Patrick’s Day By Collin Kelley If you’re looking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Atlanta, the city hosts one of the oldest parades in the country and there’s plenty of drinking and partying, too. Here’s a roundup of some of the events. The 135th Atlanta St. Patrick’s Day Parade, one of the oldest in the U.S. and the longest running event in Atlanta’s history, returns to Peachtree Street in Midtown on Saturday, March 11. The event will feature the famous Budweiser Clydesdales and the world’s largest walking flag, which is carried by dozens of marchers. More than 2,000 dancers, musicians, cheerleaders, clowns, marching bands, and Irish and local dignitaries will participate. The parade will step off at noon at 15th Street and make its way to 5th Street. The event will be held rain or shine. For more details, visit atlantastpats.com. Fadó Irish Pub in Buckhead will hold its annual St. Patrick’s Day Party March 11 and 17. Fadó will close down Buckhead Avenue for live music and events, while the pub offers a full brunch menu and traditional Irish fare. Grady student’s play hits the right notes at Georgia theaters By Clare S. Richie A 15-year-old goes to the grocery store to pick up a few items for her mother and reluctantly interacts with a meddling adult store clerk. This outing would appear mundane on the surface, but was internally troubling to Clarissa Mullig – Grady High School’s STAR student and award-winning writer. Retelling the story with humor became the inspiration for her highly praised original play. Two years ago, as a 10th grader, Mullig brought this personal experience to the Grady Playmakers free workshop with her play, “In and Out.” With the help of volunteer professional actors and directors, this intense weekend culminated in a staged reading of her eight-minute play. “It’s a chance to bring your play to life. I think that’s a magical experience for anyone, especially a young writer,” Mullig said. During the workshop, she added Social Anxiety as a third character in order to vocalize the fears running through her main character’s head. “Many of our professional adult actors and directors commented on the depth and sophistication of Clarissa’s writing, as well as the honesty in her work,” said Megan Cramer, a Grady alum who founded and leads the Playmakers workshop. “We have all had those nagging and powerful voices in our head. Clarissa showed us that practicing that dialogue with ourselves – challenging those inner voices – is an important gateway to change and growth.” “In and Out” had legs beyond the workshop. The play had three more full-stage productions in three different Georgia cities. This past month, Mullig directed Grady student actors at the Thespian Conference Playworks in Columbus, Georgia and Woodstock’s Elm Street Theater produced the play with their own actors and director as an opening act to their main stage show. This experience may explain why Mullig, who initially dreamed of writing young adult fiction fantasy novels, fell in love with the theater. “When you are a playwright, you’re creating something that will be recreated again and again – assuming people like

your play and want to do it. It’s new every time and it’s a very collaborative process,” Mullig said. And her theater talents are not limited to being a playwright. She’s comfortable both on the stage as a lead actor and behind the scenes as crew chief or working other aspects of technical theater. “It’s what I tell freshmen: just try everything,” Mullig said. That’s what’s worked for her. She has thousands of hours in the Grady theater program as a self-proclaimed “actor-techie hybrid.” She has also written for The Grady Southerner and serves as co-editor of The Grady Nexus magazine. Her varied experiences in high school mean she has many options for what to pursue in college and beyond. “The reason I can’t boil down my interests into one thing is that I just really like everything. I like writing outside of theater, playwriting, management stuff for tech, running lights, designing, building, and directing. I also really love acting. I probably won’t do every single one of those things as a career but at college I can explore all those things and probably narrow them down.”

Street art conference returns, expands to Buford Highway By Grace Huseth Living Walls, the annual street art conference, returns this summer with an expansion to Buford Highway. Monica Campana founded the organization in 2009 with the help of Blacki Li Rudi Migliozzi. Since then, Living Walls has painted more than100 murals and hosted over 30 lectures and other educational events in Atlanta. However, Campana said Living Walls has decided to slow down producing murals in the metro Atlanta area and is now striving for sustainability and more community missions. The year will kick off with a public art performance from actor Danielle Deadwyler, the first recipient of the Laura Patricia Calle Grant, named for the late Living Walls programming director. Deadwyler’s project is called “Busted Open,” a multimedia performance on black feminism. The interactive, weekend long performance will be held in April. In July, Living Walls’s annual conference will move to Buford Highway in a partnership with civic organization We Love BuHi. Campana and Marian Liou, the founder of We Love BuHi, met as fellows through the Center of Civic Innovation and discovered street art would be a great solution to changing perspectives of the corridor. “The intentionality is different. We want the artists to work with people who know and live on Buford Highway and work together as problem solvers,” Campana said. “The area is so special. Local artists will engage with community groups and schools from the Buford Highway area to develop the concept for the artists to execute.” In the past, Living Walls has worked with international and European artists, but the focus in 2017 will be on making art local and responding to the times accordingly. Campana said the Buford Highway’s stretch of plazas and businesses do not offer as many large walls fitting for murals, so artists will adapt to the environment to create sculptures and add other cultural touches. According to Campana, leaders in Chamblee and Brookhaven and responding well to the partnership and are starting their own projects with MARTA to create public art. Jewish Music Festival returns March 2-19 The Atlanta Jewish Music Festival (AJMF) returns for its eighth year with a two and a half week festival that will run March 2-19 in various locations around the metro. Beloved vegan and street food dish is served up around Intown By Isadora Pennington

alafel, a fried ball of chickpeas or fava beans, is a popular vegan dish with ancient origins. The truth behind its creation is hazy, although its origins can be traced back to Pharaonic Egypt where it may have been invented as a meat substitute during Lent. The dish’s long and complex history is a testament to its steadfast popularity. Throughout the years the recipe has remained more or less the same, though with some evolution brought on by technological advances and cultural influences. Not only is it tasty, but it is also a great source of fiber, protein, complex carbohydrates, and vitamins, which makes it a viable meat alternative for vegetarians and vegans. Served hot, typically as a street food, one usually finds them wrapped in pita or served on a plate alongside salads and other sides. The dish is a longtime favorite of mine, and throughout the years I’ve had the pleasure of tasting some of Atlanta’s best falafel dishes. This month I stopped by a few of my favorite restaurants to sample their versions of this classic meal, so whether you’ve tried these delectable patties of tasty fried goodness or are looking for a new spot, I recommend stopping by these great local restaurants.

The café has partnered with PAWS Animal Rescue Shelter, Georgia’s oldest no-kill shelter for cats and dogs, and have screened cats to ensure they have the personality to thrive in such an environment. A two-door entry will lead to a designated cat territory filled with 13 roaming cats and plenty of human and feline perches. Fundamentally Feline, a cat behavior consultant, has custom made cat towers and cat walks for animals to feel comfortable in their environment. “If the cats don’t want to touch the floors they won’t have to,” Hilton said. Artwork includes a large mural of the three original Java Cats – Cream, Theo and Boots – by Atlanta street artist 70DOT. Hilton learned much of her management skills as a former captain at St. Cecilia, one of Chef Ford Fry’s restaurants. Some of the chefs from Fry’s restaurants hosted a fundraiser by cooking a huge feast and donating the funds to the Hilton’s Kickstarter. Hilton was also supported by Decatur’s Ebrik Coffeehouse. where she picked up her barista skills. “The biggest surprise was learning about myself and the entrepreneurship mind. I realized I have a different perspective and drive since I don’t have a business background,” she said. Hilton said she was excited to learn that a second cat café is coming soon to Intown. April Hills is currently renovating a space in the Old Fourth Ward to open Happy Tabby Cat Café in the near future. “Atlanta is definitely big enough for two, if not more cat cafés,” Hilton said. “Cat cafes are such a cool way to get cats adopted and it’s all about saving as many cats as possible.”

Who knows how much more they may try to scale up; they’ve managed to do a lot in six years. As a food truck, Yumbii generally makes 11 a.m. lunch rounds and 7 p.m. dinner rounds. Their brick and mortar location likewise runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with an extra hour before closing on Saturday nights. It’s located in a little Brookwood strip on Peachtree at Collier, a residential neighborhood where the nearest quality Mexican competitor is Bell Street Burritos and the nearest quality Asian competitor is Tuk Tuk Thai. But if you hate to sacrifice your queso needs in order to get your sriracha fix, or vice versa, look no further than Yumbii’s Asian-Mexican blend. Their menu in the store is identical to the food trucks. There are four classic items: taco, burrito, rice bowl, quesadilla. These come with four protein choices: Asian ribeye beef, spicy pulled pork, chicken, stirfried tofu. There are four specialty items: fish tacos, pulled pork sliders, and a philly or nachos with your choice of protein. Two options for sides: chips and fries. A combo of three tacos plus drink will cost you just $10. The other combo is also $10, but subs in fries for one of the tacos. Get the fries. These are not ordinary fries! But also, they are normal enough that your children will eat them. And then you’ll be hooked for life because Yumbii’s sesame fries are completely crave-worthy. The sesame oil adds a gentle touch of the extra savory to everybody’s favorite comfort food. They smell great and taste great, offering a decent crunch

in their golden brown exterior. Covered in salt flecks and an evenly distributed yet far from intimidating number of red chili flakes, these sesame fries are built to be distinctively tasty, as opposed to generically spicy. Fries come with a side of chipotle ketchup that is both delicious and utterly unnecessary due to the quality of the fries. And why would you dunk your sesame fries in ketchup when you could dip them in sriracha queso? You can order a standalone cup of the stuff for two bucks, or with chips for five bucks. The chips are nicely browned and plenty salty, but the sriracha cheese dip is the star of Yumbii’s show. There is nothing special or fancy about it; it just tastes awesome. It’s not too spicy, but does add a little kick beyond regular queso. Yumbii understands the true meaning of special sauce and you will want to take a bath in that sriracha cheese dip. In fact, their condiments generally are what have always kept Yumbii a notch above the usual food truck fray. Soy-sesame vinaigrette on the salad topper for the tacos? Nice flavor and just enough bite. Korean barbecue sauce on any of the classic orders? Strong flavor and great balance of sugar with spice. Cucumber kimchee on the sliders or the philly? So much more going on than your average pickle. Entree-wise, you therefore cannot go wrong. Yumbii sticks to what it knows, expanding slowly but surely. The brick and mortar location is 1,440 square feet—not much more kitchen space than a truck. The seating is comfortably cheap and they’ve got some taller stools in the front patio so you can watch people walking by. All together, the place seats about 40. They’ve got ambient techno playing quietly in the background in the afternoon. You can sit there with a good book, sipping on a lime Jarritos soda and enjoying a never-ending stream of sriracha cheese dip, soaking up the sunshine for an easy hour. Yumbii is an excellent reminder that slow and steady wins the race. The food truck’s fans asked to put the first permanent location in Brookwood, and they are obliging. Between those loyal followers of the trucks and the converts Yumbii will win through foot traffic in Brookwood, owner Carson Young is doing everything right. Fetch has released the first renderings of the restaurant and dog park bar concept coming to the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood this fall. Situated on a more than 1-acre site at 520 Daniel Street, the restaurant will feature a converted Airstream trailer with full bar serving beer, wine and cocktails. The main building, Fetch Ice House, will have a restaurant and bar in an openair, rustic setting with plenty of outdoor seating. A shipping container will be transformed into a fullservice bar with TVs and a rooftop lounge. The Atlanta Brunch Fest returns for a second year, this time at Atlantic Station, on Saturday, March 11. The event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. with advanced entry for VIP ticket holders at 11 a.m. There will be more than 30 restaurants providing samples of brunch items, including locations like Buttermilk Kitchen, Einstein’s, Hampton and Hudson, and more. Status Report An update on some of Intown’s big real estate projects By Collin Kelley

ranes and construction sites dominate the Atlanta skyline these days as new apartment, condo and mixeduse developments rise around the city. This month, we update you on some of the big projects with new renderings and information about what’s to come.

No2 Opus Place It is confirmed that No2 Opus Place (No2), a new condominium development on 14th Street in Midtown, will top out at 53 stories, making it the tallest residential tower in Atlanta. The Perkins + Will-designed tower will rise on a 4.5-acre, mixeduse destination called Opus Place. “While the project was initially slated to be taller, due to the strength of the Atlanta condominium market, ownership elected to build a worldclass residence that was exclusive to buyers, without a hotel component, and in doing so reduce the height of the tower,” said Kerman Haynes, vice president of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties’ CITY HAUS Division, which is handling the sales and marketing. “The move also enabled the developer to offer more services and amenities while lowering the monthly common charges.”

Juniper and Tenth The Atlanta Housing Authority has tapped developer Columbia Residential to renovate the Juniper and Tenth high rise in Midtown into housing units to serve low-income seniors and persons with disabilities. Constructed in 1974, the renovated building will have 149 affordable housing units, with 30 apartments reserved for residents earning 50 percent of area median household income, and 119 units reserved for residents earning 60 percent of area median household income. Along with enhanced energy efficiency (including Green Building Certification) and fully renovated apartment units, the building will have a fitness center, a business center, upgraded laundry facilities, an exam room, a community room, a recycling center, a covered terrace and an outdoor patio. Renovations are expected to be completed in January 2018.

Star Metals Atlanta The Allen Morris Company has revealed its newest renderings for Star Metals Atlanta, the $215 million mixed-use development in West Midtown. Located at 1055 Howell Mill Road, the 12-story, 215,000 rentable square foot Class A Star Metals Offices will be situated directly across the street from Star Metals Residences. The developmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s multi-family residential component is expected to break ground soon. There will be a ground floor restaurant and retail space from Paces Properties (developers of Krog Street Market), which co-owns the project with Allen Morris.

3354 and 3356 Peachtree Road Batson-Cook Development Company is forming a joint venture partnership with Regent Partners to acquire the last remaining parcel in the Buckhead financial district. Regent is spearheading the $400 million office, retail and multifamily project on Peachtree Road, a 4-acre parcel on the future Park400, MARTA rail line and Georgia 400. The development calls for two buildings with more than 550,000 square feet of office and retail space, approximately 60 condominiums and 300 multi-family units.

Entering the front door of the plain industrial building with an enormous, rusted canopy, visitors are charmed by the discovery of a captivating courtyard decked with plants By Melody Harclerode and modern outdoor furniture. The coolness of the concrete block walls is warmed with the color and texture of the accent metal panels on wall openings and with the structural beams. A massive, glass window wall at the rear of the courtyard provides a tantalizing view into the sunlit office space beyond. This unexpected, yet assured use of space, scale, light, and materials with this project characterizes the style of architects Brian Bell AIA and David Yocum AIA, the principals of BLDGS. The graduates of the Harvard Graduate School of Melody L. Harclerode, AIA, promotes significant Design established their architectural firm in West End at this former automotive parts building in historical, cultural, 2006. and natural sites as an Villa de Murph, as the project is fondly called, organizational leader, received acclaim in the architectural community, architect and writer. and generated referrals for Bell and Yocum to design new cutting-edge projects. The striking Burned House in the Old Fourth Ward features exterior cladding with a range of black hues as a reference to the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917. Whitespace Gallery in Inman Park showcases the dialogue between contemporary artwork and the beautifully raw historic setting from 1893. Recognizing their provocative designs, the Atlanta Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Atlanta) awarded BLDGS with the 2006 Emerging Voices Award and with the 2016 AIA Atlanta Silver Medal Firm Award. BLDGS has garnered national attention recently as only one of eight firms across North America to receive the prestigious Architectural League of New York, 2017 Emerging Voices Award. Since 1982, this award has celebrated the North American individuals and firms with the potential to influence the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. Bell describes the Architectural League of New York, 2017 Emerging Voices Award as “a significant honor, indicating our work’s relevance in and beyond Atlanta.” This month, Bell and Yocum will receive the award in front of their national peers during a lecture at the School of the Visual Arts in Manhattan. With their eyes on current projects, such as the Georgia Tech Van Leer Interdisciplinary Design Common, and their sights set on the upcoming trip to New York City, Bell and Yocum are encouraged by the growing number of clients who have an appreciation for inventive and enduring architecture. Online apartment finder RentCafe.com completed a report on Atlanta’s rent growth and discovered that East Atlanta has the fastest growing rents in the metro. While Midtown and Buckhead would be the obvious choices for more expensive lease options, rents in zip code 30316 went up 13.5 percent, from $926 per month the year before to $1,051 per month now. Just behind East Atlanta is Kirkwood (zip code 30317), with a 9.5 percent increase, from $958 to $1,049. Meanwhile, rents went down in affluent zip codes 30327 (-2.2 percent) and 30305 (-1.5 percent), covering the neighborhoods of Buckhead and Peachtree Hills, where quite a few new residential buildings have opened up in the last year to the point that renters have gained some bargaining power. The Atlanta Apartment Association (AAA) has named Christie Eash, senior vice president for AMLI Residential, its 2017 chair of the board of directors. Eash previously served in several AAA leadership roles prior to her appointment to chair. Harry Norman, Realtors has announced that general manager Jenni Bonura has been promoted to president and chief executive officer.
