We’ve already seen how politicians have weaponized and fearmongered the trans community – from playing sports to bathroom usage to pronouns. There’s always a bogeyman invented to scare the populace during tough election cycles, and the trans community has borne the brunt of it.

What would a ban on contraception look like in Georgia, assuming the right wing includes condoms in their effort to turn back the clock? I can imagine a dramatic increase in HIV and STDs. We already watched conservative politicians try to turn monkeypox into the next AIDS crisis, placing the blame on gay men.

For the last few election cycles, the phrase “most important election in a generation” has been bandied about until it’s nearly lost all credibility. Atlanta will mark LGBTQ+ Pride Month in October with music, theatre, art, and marches. While there is much to celebrate, shifting political winds must also keep our thriving community on high alert.We’ve already watched the U.S. Supreme Court roll back abortion rights across the nation, and LGBTQ+ rights will likely be on the court’s docket sooner rather than later. At least one justice has already signaled that he believes the court’s decision to allow same-sex marriage should be “revisited” as Emboldenedwell.by the antics of the previous president and his followers, a vocal minority of right-wing religious organizations, and the politicians who have cozied up to both, there is existential fear that hard-won rights for the LGBTQ+ community could be snuffed out.

Mayor Andre Dickens has named Jahnee Prince to serve as the administration’s Commissioner for the Department of City Planning. Prince brings more than 25 years of city planning experience to the post, having worked in both the public and private sectors.

The Atlanta City Council approved legislation on Sept. 19 authorizing the administration to apply for $10.5 million in federal dollars to fund preliminary engineering for The Stitch, a project to cap the Downtown Connector with a park that city officials say would catalyze new development in the city’s center, including affordable housing.

The “Streetcar East Extension” would be the streetcar’s first extension of its nearly 3-mile Downtown loop. It would also be the first stretch of transit along the Atlanta Beltline, an original component of the massive project begun nearly 20 years ago and expected to be completed by 2030.

“The question with transit is oftentimes a chicken and egg one,” he said. “Well, the chicken has laid the egg on the east side and so expand the streetcar out toward Ponce City Market holds a lot of promise from a ridership perspective.”

The Atlanta Streetcar extension from Downtown to the Atlanta BeltLine and Ponce City Market is expected to start construction in 2024 and be completed by 2027, according to preliminary plans revealed in September by MARTA.

The streetcar extension is planned to run nearly a mile down Edgewood Avenue, up to Randolph Street, along Auburn Avenue to Irwin Street where it will connect with the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail. From Irwin Street the streetcar route would continue north to Ponce City Market. Five stop locations are planned.Downtown vehicular congestion has continually impeded operation of the streetcar. MARTA and city officials plan to close a section of Irwin Street where it crosses with the Beltline to vehicular traffic for one week in October (dates had not been set at press time). The idea is to collect data on how traffic is impacted at the notoriously congested intersection where Irwin intersects with Sampson and Krog streets. Bicyclists, pedestrians, and other Beltline users will be able to access IrwinTheStreet.one-week study will also deliver data to support the streetcar having its own lane to avoid sitting in car traffic. One option is to eventually turn the stretch of Irwin between Krog and Auburn/Sampson into a plaza with no vehicle access, except

MARTA reveals plan to extend streetcars to the BeltLine

Atlanta City Councilmember Amir Farokhi, whose district includes the rapidly growing and gentrifying Old Fourth Ward, said at the Sept. 13 meeting that the eastward expansion of the streetcar is a “transformative” project.

Design for the extension is just 30% complete. Cost for the project is estimated to be between $176 million to $215 million. Funding to pay for the project will come from the 2016 More MARTA referendum when voters approved a half-penny sales tax for transit. Costs for another More MARTA project, the Summerhill bus rapid transit line, have ballooned and stalled the project.

■ Cincar Consulting Group (C2G) was hired to create an updated plan that will lay out the steps needed to complete the 22mile multi-use trail loop by 2030. The updated “strategic implementation plan” is a comprehensive work plan that includes completing trails, transit preparedness, parks, affordable housing, economic development, public art and historic preservation.

Josh Rowan, MARTA’s deputy general manager and former ATLDOT commissioner, said millions of people are continuing to move to Atlanta and “transit will continue to play a vital and increasingly vital role in how we move people throughout our city.”

“If we look at potentially the region being seven, eight million people, our systems are not going to be effective if we continue to rely on single-use vehicles,” Rowan said.

■ Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. and PATH Foundation recently selected a route for the final segment of the Northwest Trail. The trail will run alongside Peachtree Park Drive and Bennett Street in Buckhead.

■ ABI is seeking bids from companies to build two segments of the Southside Trail. The two trail segments, known as

Segments 4 and 5, are between Boulevard and Glenwood Avenue and will include reconstruction of the United Avenue bridge.

She said she has worked with many patients who are initially hesitant to speak about their diagnosis with family, friends or teachers, which leads to further social isolation and feelings of insecurity. “By working with a validating and nonjudgmental therapist,” Dr. Reed explained, “most patients are able to develop the language and confidence necessary to speak about IBD to the extent necessary and to stop carrying around shame.”

I have probably spent 100 hours sitting under the bridge, chatting with people who stop by while I’m painting. The Rainbow Door really is a love letter to LGBTQIA Atlanta.”

“The Rainbow Door has a little more of me in it than the rest,” said Singer. It was installed eight years ago in celebration of Atlanta Pride and was initially intended to remain for only the month of October. Instead, this Tiny Door has persisted and is now a cultural icon.

“I came out as a teenager and started the Gay-Straight Alliance in my conservative high school,” explained Singer, who identifies as queer. “We faced bullying from kids and teachers alike, and even some hate mail from the community.” Instead of giving up and taking down her work she instead dedicated even more of herself to the Rainbow Door.

“It has been an incredible surprise, year after year, to hear from people around the world, and to find that people are still engaged and curious,” she said. “I find tiny items left in front of the doors often, and it’s the highest compliment!”

“Seeing how art and music brought people together stayed with me and inspired me to go to art school.” Following graduation from Rutgers University she relocated to Atlanta and found a sense of community in Reynoldstown where she lives with her wife to this day. Her Tiny Doors act as a sort of conduit for conversation between the artist and the communities that surround them.Commissioned projects, both big and small, have been one of the more unexpected perks of working as a full-time artist. For these works, Singer is tasked with getting to know what is important to a group of people, and that’s true whether you’re considering an entire neighborhood, an awards ceremony, or even an NBA team.

Creating each door is a labor of love. The original Tiny Door sculptures are made from wood, clay, and mixed media. They are then molded and cast in resin to create weatherproof replicas which she installs and paints by hand. “The process is customized for each location. “Doors represent entry, and a Tiny Door is an opportunity to enter your imagination,” said Singer. The process to create a new door is thorough and intentional. Spending up to a year researching the area and planning the design, she ensures that the pieces capture the spirit of the neighborhood and feel authentic within the community.

Fine Arts Center marks its 50th anniversary

This desire to produce subjective and evocative works that ask for engagement from the viewer is perhaps one of the most marked shifts in Soren’s lifelong pursuit of storytelling. To understand why this is such a drastic departure we must go back to the beginning.Soren’s career began in the late 80s when she was a student at NYU studying journalism and politics. In off hours she became involved with MTV which was, at the time, a powerhouse television channel for music lovers across the globe. She eventually became an on-air reporter for MTV News. “It makes me feel like it grew over time, it stretched and it means something new. I love those pictures,” said Soren, who explained that the images exist in a sort of closed loop. “The world is 3D, you take a picture and make it 2D, and then you carve into it and turn it back into 3D.”

Running, Soren began working on Surface Tension. Developed by experimenting with photographs of photographs and playing with the intersections of media types, these images invite the viewer to consider how viewers might engage with images through technology. Using an 8×10 film camera to document images displayed on the screen of a dirty iPad, the resulting images feature smudges and smears that distort, enhance, accentuate and sometimes seemingly threaten to completely obscure the original image.

works Soren used tools to inflict damage and physically alter already printed images. The process itself is actually quite stressful as there are so many unknowns when using nontraditional means to distress her photographs, leaving little room for error.

Soren applied for and accepted a yearlong fellowship to study photography and art history at Stanford. The experience was transformative. She fell in love with the darkroom and it set her on a path of artistic exploration.Now,some 20-odd years later, Soren spends most of her time working on collections of photographs that come to life over the course of five or more years. The slow, contemplative process of fine art photography has suited her. It allows her to be curious and playful, to experiment without predetermining the outcome. Quentin Tarantino famously uses restaurants to introduce his characters by placing them in a setting the audience can immediately familiarize themselves with like a diner. In the Mood for Love, a devastating portrayal of yearning and desire, gives two star-crossed lovers residing in the same building one place where they can disguise themselves in plain sight: a restaurant. For the last decade, like everyone else

The 2,315-square-foot building at 1084 Piedmont will draw inspiration from Piedmont Park, housing a restaurant downstairs (from the creators of Das BBQ) and an 800-square-foot, upstairs dining terrace with a gable covered bar overlooking the park. The terrace will also be available for private events.

There’s a new school in town that is unlike any other. It is unequivocal that you will receive some of the best in-person wine education from Atlanta’s newest wine school, The Oenophile Institute.

In 2018, Young took her first level certification with the Court of Masters Sommeliers. Soon after, she received a continuing education scholarship for women in wine which allowed her to take and pass the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) exam, as well as receive the Wine & Spirits Educational Trust (WSET) Level III Award in Wine. Young is currently a candidate for WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines which is an expert-level qualification that takes roughly two to three years to complete.Chelsea states that one of the biggest challenges she is facing with this upper level certification, outside of the intensive 500+ hours of study time, is that she has to travel to Washington, D.C. on five separate occasions to take each section of the test. With D.C. being the closest location to complete WSET Diploma with an exam sticker price of $7,200, those who have a passion and drive for wine, but any sort of financial constraint that could keep them from traveling, this test becomes altogether unattainable. Young’s goal is to change this. While she can’t change the price of these certification courses, Young can make in-person wine classes and resources more attainable.TheOenophile Institute is located in Smyrna Village Market on the second floor above Vineyard Wine Market – about 2.5 miles from The Battery Atlanta and the 75/285 interchange. CY: Our classes are split into three “series” –the Vineyard Series, Winery Series, & Cellar Series. The Vineyard is where it all begins for wine so this series is aptly named. These classes will encompass broader topics and theory basics. All classes are individual and not structured as a progressive course so you can join any class that interests you. We will also be offering masterclasses with special guest educators and panel discussions with industry professionals on an array of topics that affect the wine world and the people within it. Starting in November we will begin a rotating six week “Southern Hospitality” course geared towards anyone that has just entered (or wants to enter) the restaurant, retail, or distribution industry and is looking to know more about wine quickly to further their careers and increase their income. It will be covering viticulture, production methods, the major grape varieties and producing regions, service

Chelsea Young: Most schools split their educational offerings between tastings and certifications. To me, it feels like a delineation between consumer & professional. In certification settings, there is a focus on the theory behind what makes wine, “wine” – it tends to be serious, stuffy, and loses the fun. While tastings focus on producer/brand specifics and even the bottle sale afterwards – it loses the theory or the “why”. All of the classes I’ve designed focus on wine as a whole – you’ll get the theory to understand why it tastes the way it does but you’ll also get to expand your palate with diverse wines and discuss with others why you did or didn’t like it. All of the classes have been made to bridge the gap between consumers and professionals by opening the lines of communication. And more than anything, I don’t want wine to lose its fun –we are talking about fermented grape juice after all.

Sarah Pierre: There are very few wine schools in Atlanta. In fact, many have opened and closed. What makes your wine school different from the others?

This redevelopment was structured to preserve affordability for residents earning between 40 and 70 percent area median income (AMI) through partnerships with key stakeholders including the City of Atlanta, Invest Atlanta, Enterprise Community Partners, Atlanta Housing, Partners for Home, Bank of America and through a pre-development grant from The Annie E. Casey Foundation.

The renovated apartment homes feature fully equipped kitchens, energy-efficient lighting and fixtures for improved air quality and utility savings, restored original red oak hardwood flooring and ceramic tile baths. On-site amenities include a business center, fitness center, community garden and covered pavilion with grills.

“Columbiaceremony.Residential is honored to have been asked to lead the renovation and re-development of Columbia at Capitol View,” said Columbia Residential President Carmen Chubb. “This historic property was on the verge of being sold as a market-rate development and it would not have been possible to preserve affordable housing along the BeltLine and protect residents from displacement without the diligent collaboration of the City of Atlanta, and our community partners. I’d also like to thank our residents for their patience as we worked to minimize displacement and navigate the challenges of the pandemic during this three-phase project.”

What’s happening there now? Smyrna was ranked 44th on Money’s 2018 survey of “Best Places to Live in America” and has become a popular suburb of Atlanta. Along with endless dining and shopping possibilities, the downtown area has Village Green (home to the library, community center, and city hall) is a frequent gathering spot for events. Where is it? In Cobb County, less than a half-hour drive up I-75 from Downtown Atlanta in Cobb County.

What’s the history? The area that is now Smyrna began as a religious encampment for pioneers in the late 1830s. Like most Georgia towns, Smyrna began to grow after the Western & Atlantic railroad came through. Sherman burned most of the settlement on his March to the Sea during the Civil War. Smyrna was incorporated in 1872. The town’s next growth spurts would happen during World War II when the nearby Bell Bomber plant produced B-29 planes and again in the 1950s when Lockheed took over the plant to manufacture aircraft. Its nickname is the “Jonquil City” for the thousands of flowering plants that bloom along streets and in gardens.

What about outdoor activities? Smyrna has more than 20 parks and greenspaces. You’ll find swimming pools, golf courses, athletic fields, playgrounds, and passive space for picnics. The city is also building out a series of trails that loop around the city and you can also jump on the famed Silver Comet Trail in Smyrna.

Carex ‘Evergold’ – Called Japanese sedge, this evergreen perennial looks like an ornamental grass. The deep green leaves are striped with creamy yellow variegation. A clumper, it grows 8-18” tall and looks great planted in combination with Annabelle hydrangeas and ferns.

Baptisia australis – This native perennial needs space in the garden, growing 3-4’ tall and wide. The blue-green foliage shows off the blue purple flowers (there are also white and yellow flowered baptisias. The seedpods can be ornamental if they don’t dry out. A great host plant for many butterflies and moths.

Many are happiest when grown in full or partial sun. Perennials on their own are appealing but many also make great companions for your favorite trees and shrubs. Whether they act as a carpet or offer bursts of blooms at a time when your shrubs have finished flowering, hardy perennials provide the middle ground and the carpet. Some like the stalwart garden phlox, Phlox paniculata, bloom beautifully in late spring and summer and then by late fall have all but disappeared in the garden until next spring. Others like our native Christmas fern are truly evergreen and standout year around. They are also tough and long-lived in the garden (always a plus for me). Did I mention I don’t have an irrigation system?

Zanthorhizza simplicissima – Yellowroot. Despite its tongue twister of a name this native perennial (some consider it a shrub) with woody stems has foliage that reminds me of celery. If you have a wet area or stream bank this is a great choice. The tiny maroon flowers appear before and as the plant is leaving out. Fun fact. The name yellowroot refers to the roots which are used for a yellow dye.

As I write this, I am happy to report that I am almost caught up with my weeding. Always a challenge, especially with recent rainy weeks when the weeds appear

with them that will extend the seasonal interest in your landscape and act as living mulch.

Below are five perennials for sun and five for shade. This list is not inclusive but includes both natives and some nonnatives. Some are familiar favorites and a few may be new to you but all should thrive in your GeorgiaBeforegarden.youload up your shopping cart make sure you have considered not only the exposure in your garden but the soil, is it wet, dry or amended with organic matter? Group plants with similar cultural needs together. When you add trees and shrubs to your garden consider perennials to plant

Heuchera spp. and cultivars – Coralbell or Alumroot is great for its showy foliage which comes in shades or burgundy, chartreuse, green and red.

Amsonia hubrichtii –Arkansas bluestar has willow-like foliage, pale blue flowers (not too showy but worthy) in spring and often stunning yellow foliage in autumn. It moves in the garden and is tough. Don’t let it dry out. Grows 2-3’ tall and wide. Is happiest in full sun.

Black-eyed Susan and Ageratum

variety for years and it thrives in my garden with a minimum of care. Grow it with roses and other leggy shrubs or in front of the border.

Polygonatum odoratum ‘Variegatum’ –Variegated Solomons Seal thrives in my shade garden and makes a great companion for Christmas fern. The dark green leaves are edged in white. This brightens up any shade garden and looks great with Christmas fern which provides winter color once the Solomons Seal has died down for the winter.

And, if you have a shade garden there are lots of options for perennials that flower and even more that offer attractive foliage, both evergreen and deciduous types.

Lobelia cardinalis – A late summer bloomer this native cardinal flower is a standout with its bright red flowers. Grows in wet or average soils. Pollinators are drawn to it. Combine it with Virginia Sweetspire or Sweet pepperbush.

The Hermés location will be near one of the mall’s entrances and adjacent to the One Phipps Plaza expansion, including a 13-story office tower. The adjacent luxury Nobu Hotel recently started accepting bookings for late November.

Hanor told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Hermès is one of 15 luxury retailers to be added to Phipps Plaza’s ground floor by mid-2024. She declined to name the other 14 luxury retailers.

The building that houses Star Community Bar, a landmark in the heart of the Little Five Points neighborhood for three decades, is headed for demolition to make way for a mixed-use development.

Hermés has a store in the Buckhead Village District, and Tomorrow’s News Today reported in June this store was closing to move to Phipps Plaza.

Luxury brand Hermés has signed a lease to open a new 7,000 square-foot boutique at Phipps Plaza in Buckhead. The boutique is planned to open at the end of the second quarter of 2024.

“We are moving forward like nothing has changed,” Star Community Bar coowner Luke Lewis said “We are still booking shows for 2023.”

The bar’s longtime landlord has been transparent with the Star Community Bar ownership team about the development process, and Lewis said the talks with all involved have been consistent and thus far very positive. “We may not always get what we want, but I think we will all win in the end,” said Lewis.

The city is also home to Activvely, a Tinder-like platform for meeting your next workout buddy.

In August, nonprofit groups and their public and private partners held a press conference to support the electrification of school bus fleets. Longtime clean air advocates, including MOCA co-founders Laura Turner Seydel and Stephanie Blank and co-chair Gwen Lynn, participated along with EPA Regional Administrator Daniel Blackman. The Electrification Coalition’s Anne Blair summarized the compelling reasons to move to ESBs: “Electric bus technology provides a huge opportunity for schools to reduce cost, cut our dependence on oil, and provide a cleaner, healthier ride to school for our kids.”

Dirty Diesel

Eighty years ago, school transportation officials chose a color now called National School Bus Glossy Yellow as the standard for all buses for safety (high visibility), consistency, and cost-savings. That decision has served the test of time well. The fuel used to power the buses has not had a similar trajectory. Long considered a reliable workhorse to move heavy vehicles in all sorts of weather, diesel is now known to cause a variety of health problems, especially in children. The fuel is also more expensive and less efficient than alternatives.Studieshave confirmed that toxic emissions and particulate matter from diesel vehicles contribute to air pollution and cause health issues: asthma, respiratory illness, cancer, cognitive impairment, and even premature death from longterm exposure. Alternative-fuel advocates note that children from low-income communities of color often rely more heavily on buses to get to school and are disproportionately impacted by higher exposure to diesel emissions. Still, more than 95 percent of school buses nationwide use diesel.

Upfront costs have been the primary obstacle for cash-strapped school districts to transition from diesel to ESBs until last year, when the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed Congress. Sam Ham calls the legislation “a game changer;” it provides $5 billion in funding over five years to help school districts replace existing buses with low and zeroemission vehicles.

Alternative Fuels

As with any new technology, there are logistical issues, partnerships to be developed, and deep-rooted opinions to surmount. Ham also admits that an ESB is not for every school route, but he says they are “perfect” for high-density areas where the buses travel relatively short distances and are used just a few hours per day. ESBs now have ranges of more than 100 miles— and up to 155 miles—on a single charge.

More than half of all schoolchildren in the United States—about twenty-six million—rely on nearly 500,000 school buses: the largest mass transit system in

A Game Changer

When Sam Ham attended a conference for officials working in large urban school systems in 2015, his perspective on diesel fuel changed dramatically. Then the transportation director for Fulton County Schools, Ham had long believed diesel was the best power source for school buses. As transportation officials from around the country sang the praises of propane, instead of diesel, Ham says it got his attention. Looking at the total cost of ownership, it became clear to him that the alternative fuel “beat diesel hands down.”

At $350,000 or more per bus, ESBs are currently two to three times the cost of a diesel bus and a charging station adds $30,000—not insignificant sums. Ham expects these costs to decrease over time, noting that flat-screen televisions were once cost-prohibitive for most people. Transportation experts believe that upfront price parity with diesel buses will be reached by the end of this decade.

Above the Water Line

Ham was determined to convert at least half his fleet of 900 buses to propane, a much cleaner burning fuel that produces fewer particulates and less greenhouse gases per gallon—and did. With easier maintenance and cheaper fuel and repairs than diesel, he says the county saves thousands of dollars per bus per year. About five years ago, Ham decided he wanted to try an electric school bus to stay at the forefront of the industry. With state and county funds, he purchased an ESB.

The first round of applications for the federal program have been submitted. Funding in the form of rebates will be awarded by a lottery system in October. More than fifty school districts in Georgia have taken advantage of this grant opportunity with assistance from nonprofit organizations, such as Mothers & Others for Clean Air (MOCA), Electrification Coalition, and Southern Alliance for Clean Energy. Turnkey solutions have been offered by Blue Bird, manufacturer of ESBs in Georgia, and its dealer Yancey.

Down the road, there will also be opportunities for school districts to take advantage of vehicle-to-grid technology that allows the high-capacity ESB batteries to give back (sell) to the power grid to help offset peak power demands. When communities have power emergencies, this technology could also serve as a back-up power supply.

The former store for sailors is said to be the most haunted place in Savannah and it’s both a history lesson and full of haunted house-style jump scares.

Leaf Watch helps visitors research trails and fall events, book cabins and read safe hiking tips. It will also track fall color as it moves across the state. Travel tips and seasonal information is available at GaStateParks.org/LeafWatch.

State parks can often become especially busy during fall weekends, so rangers are encouraging guests to try visiting on weekdays or explore lesser-known destinations like Victoria Bryant or Don Carter state parks.
