Atlanta Braves move to Cobb will bring big changes to Downtown By Collin Kelley INtown Editor A study completed this past summer by Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies indicated that the Atlanta Braves bring in $60.8 million annually in direct fiscal impact and tax revenues to the city. That revenue stream will disappear in 2017 when the Braves move 12 miles north to a brand new stadium in Cobb County. At press time, the Cobb County Commission was poised to vote on building the $672 million stadium, while angry residents and Tea Party supporters were actively mounting a campaign to derail the plan. Virginia-Highland residents discussing historic district options By Collin Kelley INtown Editor A grassroots committee of residents is exploring the pros and cons of an historic district designation for two subdivisions in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood. The two subdivisions – Adair Park (established 1914) and the F.A. Ames Property/Virginia Highlands (establsished 1922) –include just over 300 homes. The aim is to preserve the character of the communities, which includes homes in the Tudor, Craftsman, Four Square and American Small House style. Although the city enacted tougher zoning ordinances in 2008, those new laws deal with scale and height. Teardowns are still prevalent and new homes constructed that don’t reflect the character of existing homes. Lola Carlisle, who co-authored the VirginiaHighland book in Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series, is one of the residents spearheading the historic district movement. She said in a recent interview that a historic overlay has been considered for years, but never brought to a vote. Carlisle has been involved in other efforts dating back nearly a decade. During one of those efforts, a survey was sent to all residents of Virginia-Highland by a subcommittee of the Virginia Highland Civic Association (VHCA) to gauge interest in a historic district designation. “Since the Atlanta Urban Design Commission never actively seeks out historic designations, the efforts have been at the grassroots level,” Carlisle said. “At that time, we were looking at 2,600 structures – the entire community.” However, the economic crash put discussions on the backburner and the idea of a historic district was shelved.

“There wasn’t an appetite for spending money at the time,” Carlisle recalled. “The VHCA had just spent a significant amount of money on a neighborhood commercial zoning effort and bought the property that became New Highland Park.” Earlier this year, fresh discussions began among residents in the two subdivisions and another grassroots committee was formed. A series of ongoing “street level” meetings with residents is ongoing with two more planned for Dec. 5 and Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. at The Church of our Saviour. Although the committee isn’t part of the VHCA, Carlisle said if there is enough interest, she hopes it might, once again, become a subcommittee of the organization. “These meetings are to hear residents’ feelings, concerns and fears,” Carlisle said. “It’s not our intention to pursue this if the residents and owners in the contemplated area don’t support it.” In response to the committee’s exploration work, a group of residents opposed to the idea of the historic district overlay have created a petition on Change.org. Making A Difference Nonprofit re:loom offers needed jobs and beautifully-woven products By Clare S. Richie The re:loom weave house, which upcycles discarded materials into beautiful useful products, is transforming lives. A social enterprise of the Initiative for Affordable Housing, re:loom employs the poor and homeless to hand-weave rugs, pillows, purses, scarves and more from donated fabrics for sale on-line and in select stores. Since 1990, the Decatur nonprofit has helped homeless and low-income families become self-sufficient by providing affordable housing and social services. Social workers help participants find a job, repay debt, follow a budget, and enhance parenting and daily living skills in order to secure their own housing. Executive director Lisa Wise realized that creating stable sustainable wage jobs was critical. So, she paired her personal interest in weaving with the initiative’s never-ending supply of donated clothing and linens and started a weave house. In 2010, with a three-year grant, tons of fabric, gifted looms, and volunteer support re:loom began production.

Inside the weave house are floor-to-ceiling stacks of donated clothes, linen, curtains, uniforms, and plastic bags. Volunteers wash the fabric, sort it, cut it into strips, and roll strips into balls. climbed many major mountains in this country and the world. I have totally come out of my small bubble and even took over as president of the club for a few years,” she said. In addition, Maldonado is currently the club’s director-at-large and a trip leader who searches for unique destinations to explore. Her outdoor club adventures have resulted in passport stamps from Mexico, Peru and Spain. She has been caught in bad weather outbreaks and had all kinds of equipment mishaps. “I have challenged my body and mind by participating in events that I considered to be too far outside my ability. I have felt the full impact of how the club has

changed my life,” she said. They have all enjoyed positive life changes, but Vogel, Kendall, Kujawa and Maldonado agree on one overarching AOC quality. Labyrinths provide peace, focus, release

By Joe Earle The name itself makes them seem old. Ancient, really. Like something pre-Christian, something that might be unearthed among long-lost ruins. But labyrinths – wandering pathways like the one Greek myths say Daedalus devised to imprison the monstrous Minotaur – are in the midst of a modern renewal. For the last couple of decades, labyrinths based on a medieval model have cropped up at churches, retreats, private homes, even health-care institutions across the country and across Georgia and north metro Atlanta. They’re catching on with the faithful as a way to momentarily escape the distractions of modern life. Mary Caroline Cravens of Buckhead, president of St. Monica’s Guild at the Cathedral of St. Philip, said she’s found an “amazing release” walking labyrinths. “You feel refreshed. Rejuvenated. Lighter. Calmer,” she said. “I think it’s because you’re leaving whatever burden it was [you brought in with you] in God’s hands.” Labyrinths are made to be walked. They are patterns laid out on the floor or the ground. One of the first things labyrinth fans say is that the winding pathways are not mazes. Mazes are puzzles meant to be solved. They sometimes offer several solutions. A person in a maze is trying to escape. A labyrinth offers only a single path. A person in a labyrinth follows that path to the center, then back out again. “In a maze, you’re looking for a way out,” said The Rev. Beth Knowlton, canon for liturgy and prayer at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta. “[A labyrinth] is about a loss of control. If I’m having a crazy day, it’s a good way to calm down.” The journey, labyrinth fans say, is what matters. “It is a form of meditation,” Cravens said. “Whether you’re reading a poem or just thinking, I think it’s a form of meditation.” Recent renewal of interest in labyrinths grew from the rediscovery of one set into the floor at Chartres Cathedral in France, Knowlton and others said, and many modern labyrinths are based on the Chartres design. There is some thought labyrinths might have been used in the Middle Ages to symbolically mimic pilgrimages to Jerusalem or other holy sites at a time when such religious trips were considered important signs of faithfulness. Recent interest in walking labyrinths has a different intent. It’s about focus. “I think it gives people a way to quiet themselves,” Knowlton said. “I think we live in an increasingly busy age, when people are frenetic. People are longing for silence. The labyrinth .... You just walk it.”

Knowlton sees the labyrinth as a meditation aid. “It’s about finding your own peace,” she said. “It’s really good for centering people.” The Rev. Alison Schultz, associate rector at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in Sandy Springs, agrees a labyrinth serves as a tool for meditation. Her church recently installed a grass-and-brick labyrinth in a memorial garden outside the main church building. “If we can relax, we might all feel better,” she said. Whatever the reason people find for using labyrinths, the winding paths are catching on. The international Labyrinth Society’s webpage [labyrinthsociety.org] counts 75 in Georgia, including eight in Atlanta, and 25 others in metro communities scattered from Chamblee to Morrow. The website lists Georgia labyrinths at Episcopal, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches. St. Philip’s Cathedral actually has two labyrinths. One, painted on canvas, can be spread out inside a church hall. The other, made with stone pavers, was installed this year in a garden just across a parking lot from the main building on Peachtree Road. The outdoor setting allows the stone labyrinth to be used at any time of day. Knowlton said some walk the cathedral’s labyrinths regularly. “It becomes an important part of some people’s

spiritual experience,” she said. She regularly walks the labyrinth herself. “I feel less distracted after I do it,” Knowlton said. “It makes me slow down.” Schultz says something about walking a labyrinth, something in the repetition of the walkway and in the walking itself, calms a user. She thinks that’s why labyrinths have cropped up in various cultures over thousands of years. “Something about our participation in that does something with the neurons in our brains,” she said. “I don’t know the physiology of it, but I know the impact of it.” Schultz said she’s seen people react in various ways while walking labyrinths. Some match their breathing to their steps. Some walk slowly, others more quickly. Some repeat psalms or prayers. “I do it with no intentions, to see what feelings come,” she said. “You’ll find a lot of people crying about halfway through. You can feel very vulnerable, because you’ve made yourself open to it.” Yielding control of her walk to the labyrinth can allow her to focus her thoughts. “I can’t get lost in a labyrinth,” she said. “I don’t have to think about where I’m going. I can just be there.”

Flink is founder and CEO of nonprofit Eye to Eye National, which provides students with learning disabilities mentoring by older students also working with challenges such as ADHD and dyslexia. His first book, Thinking Differently: A Guide for Parents of Children with Learning Disabilities, has just been published. Chandler is an architect, currently on leave from New York City’s parks department as a Loeb Fellow at Harvard. She was involved in the largest landfill-to-park restoration project to date, the 2,200-acre Freshkills Park, and was the design lead on rebuilding New York City’s swimming beaches following Hurricane Sandy.

Public Safety Briefs The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has awarded the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department $162,700 in federal funds to provide car seats, as well as installation services and training for low-income families throughout the city. AFRD operates 36 car seat fitting stations throughout Atlanta. These stations are open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. seven days a week. The department has filled more than 60,000 requests for car seats and/or installation services to date. “Atlanta Fire Rescue is grateful to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for its confidence in this important program,” said Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran. “These funds will allow us purchase more than 2,000 car seats and child safety booster seats, train and certify firefighters in correct installation methods and continue these vital outreach efforts in our communities.”

A LOOK BACK This Month in History

Ann Taylor Boutwell Dec. 2, 1977: Cactus Flower, Abe Burrows’ 1965 farce, was playing at the Harlequin. The dinner theatre, located in Buckhead’s PiedmontPeachtree Crossing Shopping Center, was across from two-yearold Tower Place. The production starred Texas native Ann Miller. In her heyday she was America’s leading female tap dancer. Also starring was Stuart Culpepper and a local cast. The Harlequin’s interiors were described in Anne River Siddons’ 1978 guidebook, Go Straight on Peachtree, as “a stunning reproduction of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.” In February 1980, the site opened as the Limelight Discotheque. Dec. 5 1985: The Rhodes Theatre situated in a shopping center at the junction of Peachtree, West Peachtree, and Spring streets closed with The Last Picture Show. The Rhodes first opened in June 1938, with Test Pilot starring Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracey. The future of the still-standing, but mostly vacant Art-Deco style building designed by Ivey & Crook architectural firm is uncertain.

Dec. 7, 1881: Alfred Austell died at his home on Marietta Street, located on what is now the State Bar of Georgia site at 104 Marietta. He was the founder of the first banking institution ever organized in the south. The Austell Mausoleum stands today at the highest point of Oakland Cemetery. Dec. 25, 1939: The Fox Theatre celebrated its 10th anniversary with Gulliver’s Travels, Paramount’s first fulllength cel-animated Technicolor film. Gulliver’s Travels was Paramount’s answer to Walt Disney’s 1937 box-office hit Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Dec. 30, 1867: The United States Government called its military post located on the southwestern wedge of Atlanta, McPherson Barracks. It honored Union General James Birdseye McPherson, killed July 22, 1864, in the Battle of Atlanta. With disdain locals referred to it as “that Yankee garrison” and were overjoyed to see the troops depart in 1881. Four years later, the Army acquired 140 acres for a permanent installation, located 2.5 miles south of the old McPherson Barracks. On May 4, 1889, the site named Fort McPherson became the first permanent Army installation in the Southeast. Fort McPherson is now closed, but is under redevelopment for a mixed-use site to include science and technology labs as well as housing.

Dec. 31, 1987: The well-known design work of architect Anthony Ames, a graduate of both Georgia Tech and Harvard, was admired, often criticized, and honored with accolades. His emerging design voice had captured the respect of the Architectural League and the Atlanta Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He had completed two local public commissions: the Orientation Center for the Atlanta Botanical Garden (1984) and the Fulton County Library in Alpharetta (1986). On Nov. 6, 2013, emailed images from concerned Ansley Park neighbors verified the demolition of Ames best-known work Hulse residence (1984) at 96 Westminster. Trees Atlanta says real trees are okay for Christmas By Bethany Clark Trees Atlanta It goes without saying that the Christmas tree is a holiday staple for millions of people during the winter holidays. Many can’t even imagine a Christmas without glittering ornaments, twinkling lights, and maybe a few strings of popcorn draped lovingly across a stately evergreen tree. Ahh, but then the question comes down to the evergreen itself: each year, many people feel a little conflicted about whether to purchase a fake tree or a real tree. On one hand, they wonder: “should we go with an artificial tree that will last us years, always look perfect, and will spare a real evergreen from being cut down?” Even Macy’s decided to go with a giant artificial tree for its “Great Tree” at Lenox Square this year. On the other hand, they wonder: “should we buy a real tree, which was grown on a tree farm, help the local economy, and enjoy the je no se quai that a real tree adds to the holiday?” Whatever you choose is up to you, but if you were wondering what your favorite local tree-planting nonprofit, Trees Atlanta, thinks about it, let us tell you that we support you getting a real tree! Surprised? Well, it is true, we’re in favor of planting trees whenever possible. But in all actuality, buying real Christmas trees

does support tree planting, and has many other benefits as well. • Real Christmas trees are a renewable, recyclable resource. • There are approximately 30-35 million real Christmas trees sold in North America every year. Christmas tree farmers plant more than 60 million new seedlings postharvest. • Artificial trees contain non-biodegradable plastics. According to the U.S. Commerce Department, 80 percent of artificial trees are manufactured in and shipped from China. Given that real trees are systematically grown, harvested, and often recycled through chipping programs like “Bring One for the Chipper,” Trees Atlanta advocates real trees during Christmas-time. Also keep in mind that here in Georgia, October through March is the perfect time to get out there and plant trees. So if you really feel conflicted about using a real tree during the holidays, consider volunteering with Trees Atlanta to plant trees. I believe that no matter what your faith, we all have a moral obligation to leave this planet a better place for our kids and future generations by acting as good stewards of the Earth’s resources. Thankfully, there’s a growing movement among religious organizations who are putting scriptures into action when it comes to more sustainable practices and guiding principles. San Francisco-based Interfaith Power and Light is affecting tangible change in 39 states and more than 14,000 congregations by offering ways to save energy and money, tackle climate change, and teach the importance of caring for the natural systems that support us like water, air and food.

My home state’s affiliate, Georgia Interfaith Power and Light, (GIPL) is marking its 10th anniversary this year and is involved with approximately 800 of Georgia’s 15,000 religious congregations. Executive Director Alexis Chase says the key to getting more involvement is showing how even small acts and habit changes can bring big benefits. It’s not surprising that such a successful organization is led by a woman who has lived close to nature her entire life. “I grew up in a small town in Kentucky, with horses and cows around us and a huge garden,” said Chase. “We went to church, and for us it was just a part of who we were as people. God has asked us to love everything that was created.”

GIPL has five guides to help congregations put their faith into sustainable action: 1. Power Wise: Helps congregations conduct low-cost energy audits, analyze energy data, and create a customized energy efficiency plan. 2. Dirt Wise: Offers steps on how to start a garden while educating about the wonders and health benefits of organic food. 3. Buy Wise: Supports sustainable purchasing and helps congregations identify and avoid products, services, and investments that generate waste or introduce toxic chemicals into both the congregation and the environment. 4. Water Wise: Helps congregations conserve water. 5. Waste Wise: Offers tips on reducing, reusing, and recycling in congregations. GIPL also offers a variety of classes and programs ranging from “Becoming Creation Wise” which examines the call

to care for God’s great gift of creation to the practical “Green Team Training”. It also has a Solar Loan Fund, which offers interest-free loans to churches installing photovoltaic systems for electricity and solar water heating systems. Peachtree Road United Methodist Church got involved in 2009. Associate Minister Leslie Watkins says they started by implementing a few very simple suggestions and in the first year saved more than $40,000 on their utility bills. That was enough to get the congregation of nearly 6,000 on board and now the Green Team is one of the churches’ most popular ministries. Watkins, a GIPL board member says, “When we are caring for creation, because it belongs to God, we appreciate what we’ve been given. It’s a way to love others.” For more information, visit gipl.org. The Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA) has recognized the City of Decatur, Agnes Scott College, CLEAResult, Renewal System Solutions and two additional contractors for their role delivering energy savings to Decatur homes through the DecaturWISE program. Decatur’s program, which stands for Worthwhile Investments Saving Energy, provides rebates to homeowners for making energysaving improvements. In its short duration, DecaturWISE contractors performed 56 single-family retrofits to achieve energy savings. Program administrators then took

DecaturWISE to the next level when they engaged Agnes Scott College, which offered five college-owned homes occupied by faculty, staff members and their families as case studies for a building science research study conducted by the Buildings Technologies Research and Integration Center of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). By making use of integrated building science and systems engineering principles, contractor Renewal Design-Build was able to reduce energy usage in the Agnes Scott homes by 30 to 50 percent. Historic Fourth Ward Park was recently awarded Project of the Year by the Urban Land Institute Atlanta and named a Frontline Park by City Parks Alliance, a national urban park advocacy organization. “These are great recognitions of all that we have been achieving in the Old Fourth Ward since we first convened the community in 2007 to envision the future,” said Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall, who represents that area. “Despite a national recession, Historic Fourth Ward Park has served as the catalyst for extraordinary residential, retail, and greenspace projects in the heart of the city.” The Atlanta Regional Commission has announced that more than $14 million in federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) money allocated to the region will be used to focus on advancing greenway trail segments, walking and cycling improvements within activity centers and promoting safe routes to schools and transit stations. Intown projects that will be funded include the Atlanta BeltLine trail from Glenwood Avenue to Allen Avenue and the City of Atlanta Pedestrian Accessibility Project. Downtown vendors unhappy with new law By Collin Kelley INtown Editor The Atlanta City Council passed a new vending law last month, but vendors are unhappy with the restrictions and plan to challenge the new ordinance. Among vendors complaints about the new law are that certain vendors may not get permits, some will have to spend thousands of dollars to buy carts and kiosks, and none can operate on public property at the Five Points MARTA station, a former hub of activity for street vendors, and near Turner Field. The latter may be less of an issue with the Braves moving to Cobb County, but the team still has three more years at The Ted and vendors want access to that potential revenue. The new vending law initially allows up to 31 vendors (19 kiosk locations and 12 cart locations) to operate in

Downtown Atlanta. Vendors will have to rent city-approved kiosks at a cost of $2,500 per year or buy carts vendor’s at their own expense. Tents and foldout tables previously used by vendors won’t be allowed. “It seems like this whole regime of [Atlanta Mayor] Kasim Reed is really just heartless,” said Larry Miller, president of the Atlanta Vendors Association, after the vote. “There’s no compassion here. We’re just hard working people who want to make an honest living.” Vendors were outraged when Reed ordered all vendors off the streets while the new law was being written. Courts ordered the City of Atlanta to allow vending to begin again, while a Fulton County municipal judge was about to find the mayor and Atlanta Police Chief George Turner in contempt shortly before the new law was passed by the city council.

Business & Retail Briefs A DeKalb County judge has cleared the way for a WalMart to be built in Suburban Plaza, just north of Decatur. Residents and community groups had fought to keep the Walmart out of the shopping center, but Selig Development eventually won out. Bill Wertz, a spokesperson for Walmart, said, “We are gratified the project can proceed, as it will greatly benefit the community. Walmart is looking forward to creating 300 local new jobs and providing residents with access to a wide range of affordable groceries and merchandise.” The renovated Suburban Plaza will also include LA Fitness, HomeGoods, Jo-Ann Fabrics and Ross Dress for Less. Selig plans to begin construction by the end of the year. Brothers and biking enthusiasts Ezz-Eldin and Sharif Hassan have opened The Spindle in the Old Fourth Ward. The shop caters to cyclists offering fashion and accessories.

The Spindle, Atlanta’s first commuter specific bicycle apparel boutique, has opened at the Tribute Lofts, 480 John Wesley Dobbs Ave., Suite 170, in the Old Fourth Ward. Owned by brothers Ezz-Eldin and Sharif Hassan, The Spindle offers high quality, functional apparel to urban cyclists of Atlanta’s burgeoning scene. The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership has received a second year of funding from recreation gear retailer REI in support of its Adopt-the-Atlanta BeltLine program. ROCK ‘N SPIN A new interactive, kinetic piece of public art is now in place at the corner of Peachtree and 10th streets in Midtown. The 22,000-pound Rockspinner is mounted on a bearing that allows passers-by to slowly turn it around. Zach Coffin, the artist who created Rockspinner, has been creating kinetic sculpture since 1997 and has pieces across the US and in Switzerland. Coffin said “The idea behind the Rockspinner, like most of the sculptures I create, is to make a plaything, an object that allows you to interact with a mass equivalent to 10 tons. One of the most satisfying parts of these sculptures is seeing the amazement of people who come up to a seemingly immovable boulder and find they can move it. What you serve at your holiday parties and dinners needs to complement the food you’ve prepared, and it’s also important your selection sends a “Happy Holidays” message instead of “last minute pick up”. This year, we stopped by three different Atlanta wine shops and compiled a list of the best wines and champagnes to share this season.

Ideal for pairing with lighter dishes like fish or chicken, this Chardonnay from Uraguay has a higher alcohol content and lower acidity with a sweetness that makes it stand out.

Recioto Di Gambellara Cavazza ($24.99)

For those who love a Moscato, this selection is ideal for you. Bunches of grapes found in the hilly area of Gambellara are dried naturally in wooden crates for at least three months and then fermented without skins in stainless steel tanks. This intensely fruity pick leaves a nougat taste that can be appreciated with baked and creamy chocolate desserts, a fruit sorbet or soufflé.

The Candler Park wine shop located at 1660 DeKalb Ave. is known for its wine selection hand-picked by co-owner Janea Boyles, who provided us with their top pairings for a traditional sit down meal.

La Fontaine Pineau Des Chartes ($29.99)

This sweet dessert wine is made from Ugni Blanc grapes, which are also used to make Cognac. This wine has a slightly higher alcohol content and can be enjoyed slightly chilled after meals.

Salice Salentino Riserva 2009 ($17.99)

Perfect for pairing with a rich meal like a ribeye, lamb or with ripe aged cheese, this red wine is ideal for the holiday season. The confident, yet not overbearing alcohol content, is one reason Boyles finds this selection flawless for balancing out a rich and hearty meal. The tannins (textual element that makes wines taste dry) and fresh acidity work together and create, in the end, a balanced, soft wine.

Rosa Regale ($25)

This red, sweet sparkling wine is delicious whether your choose to sip some between meals or as an after dinner sparkler. It’s also one of the few wines that truly goes well with chocolate. With its undeniable berry flavors, this selection will also complement an array of cheeses, seafood platters or pastas with delicate or spicy sauces.

Hailing from the same region as the shop owner, this white Burgundy has great depth with subtle hints of oak. Perrine suggests pairing it with a mushroom risotto or a white fish, like cod.

Fumanelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2006 ($69)

Declared as the Winemaking Region of the Year in 2009 by Wine Enthusiast, this rich red with hints of black plum and nutmeg from the Veneto region of north-eastern Italy is best served with a hearty meal like venison or rack of lamb.

Quick Bites Savor Wine Boutique (savorwineboutique.com) has opened its doors in the mixed-use development of Kirkwood Station at 1963 Hosea L. Williams Drive, Suite R-103. Owners Kyla and Gregory Cox have curated a unique collection of artisan wine (small batches by independent producers) and allow guests to “try before they buy” at weekly educational tastings, classes and special events. Bantam and Biddy (bantamandbiddy.com) owners Shaun Doty and Lance Gummere have announced they will open a second location of their chicken themed restaurant in the 12th and Midtown development. At press time, the restaurant was expected to open mid-month. A third location is planned in Alpharetta. Royal Sweets (royalsweetsatlanta.com), a new Indian-inspired restaurant, is now open at 1685 Church St. in Decatur. A Buckhead Village mainstay since 1993, The Cheesecake Factory (thecheesecakefactory.com) has announced it will move to Lenox Square next year. The current location on Peachtree Road will remain open. Bell Street Burritos (bellstreetburritos.com) has shuttered its Irwin Street Market location in the Old Fourth Ward after just a little more than a year in business. However, a new location of the burrito joint has opened in South Buckhead at 1816 Peachtree Road. A new restaurant, Bob (iluvbob.com), has opened in the Irwin Street Market space, 660 Irwin St., offering a skewer-themed menu with chicken, steak, tofu and fresh veggies. MAX’s Wine Dive (maxswinedive.com) will open at 12th and Midtown in mid-2014. The Houston-based chain offers an eclectic menu with items like fried chicken and mashed potatoes and fried egg sandwiches paired with hand-picked wines. If you’re in Decatur and in dire need of a burrito bowl, a new Chipotle (chipotle.com) has opened in the SunTrust building at the corner of Commerce and West Ponce. At press time, Beverly Hills-based Sprinkles Cupcakes (sprinkles.com) was set to open a new sweet shop at Lenox Square this month. There will be an ice cream shop and the famed Cupcake ATM, which will be constantly restocked with fresh treats available with a swipe of your charge card. Chef Ford Fry (The Optimist, King + Duke, JCT. Kitchen) is expected to announce the opening date of his new restaurant, St. Cecilia, any day now. The seafood and pasta concept will be located in the former Bluepointe space in Buckhead. It’s hard to be all things to all people. That’s why most restaurants never attempt it, preferring to niche themselves into their comfort zones. Diners and chain establishments attempt such feats but rarely pull them off. Folk Art, a relatively new addition in Inman Park, is making a valiant attempt at being all things to all people up to three times a day. We recently visited on a rainy Sunday for brunch. On the weekends, they offer brunch and dinner and during the week they offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. We easily found parking behind the relatively small group of storefronts that also houses its sister restaurant, Wisteria. The crowd was relatively large and the host accurately predicted about a 40-minute wait. They do not offer reservations. The place has a vibrant and warm feeling with decorations that align with its name. There’s seating at the counter and lots of wooden, yet still comfy, booths puzzled into the relatively small space. The friendly wait staff immediately greeted us and took our drink orders. There are good selections of beers, wine, craft sodas and craft cocktails as well as

the usual coffee, teas, juices and milks. The “Strawberry Fields” is a refreshing mix of vodka, strawberry jam, apple bitters and ginger. It is one of those cocktails that will sneak up on you and end any afternoon plans you might have that don’t involve a nap. The Bloody Mary was good but suffered from a heavy hand with the Worcestershire and citrus. The basket of small muffins was a nice brunch starter. They were moist and flavorful and didn’t t need the sides of housemade jam we had also ordered. They charge 25 cents apiece for their jams which is a very small amount, but one would think could be factored into a $5.99 charge for eight smallish muffins or even included as condiments on the table. Many of the varied brunch dishes were good. Some were just a little off on execution. The roasted pork Verde contained well-seasoned roasted pork, just too little of it. The black beans and onions overpowered the dish and were missing in the menu description. The shrimp and grits with fried egg had cooked a little too long, making the shrimp rubbery. DECORATOR DELIGHTS Holiday home tours abound around Intown

By Collin Kelley INtown Editor If you’re looking for decorating inspiration or just like the idea of wandering through some beautifully decked out homes, Intown has an array of tours on tap this month.

Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour of Homes

Decatur’s 31st annual tour is Dec. 6 – 7 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. both nights. This year’s tour has the theme “Take A Walk Down Main Street” and features nine stops in the heart of the city. The event benefits the Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund, the Decatur Education Foundation and the Wylde Center. Tickets for the Tour of Homes are $20 in advance at decaturtourofhomes.com and $25 at the door. Parking and shuttle information will be available on the website, too.

Peachtree Garden Club Christmas Home Tour

The 2013 tour will feature four distinctive Buckhead homes on Dec. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are two homes on Cherokee Road, including one designed by famed architect Neel Reid, and on Tuxedo Road and Rilman Lake Court. Tickets are $25 in advance at peachtreegardenclub.org or $30 the day of the event.

Grant Park Candlelight Tour of Homes

Victorian mansions and Craftsman cottages are just some of the homes on the 2013 tour of the Grant Park neighborhood. Starting at St. Paul United Methodist Church, the tour will be Saturday, Dec. 14, and Sunday, Dec. 15, from 6 to 10 p.m. both nights. There will also be other family fun happening during the event, including a visit from Santa Clause from 5 to 7 p.m. caroling hayrides from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday. An Artists’ Market and Bake Sale, open both nights, and a Candlelight Christmas Concert on Sunday are also planned. Tour tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 at CandlelightTourOfHomes.com.

Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes

The 19th annual Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes is set for Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Dec. 8 from noon to 4 p.m. The tour features seven homes, including a 1920s Georgian Revival style home transformed for the modern world by award-winning architect Yong Pak, a Craftsman home newly redesigned and fashioned by Reynolds Brown of Stan Topol & Associates, an expertly restored classic bungalow and a contemporary new build with a focus on modern art. A bonus stop at the new Briarcliff Summit, originally the Briarcliff Hotel built by Coca-Cola Founder Asa Candler, will give tour goers a rare opportunity to see inside the historic landmark. Local restaurants will provide food tastings at each of the homes, including Murphy’s, DBA Barbeque, American Roadhouse, The Fifth Group’s La Tavola and El Taco, Rosebud, Timone’s, Marlow’s Tavern and Atkins Park. Over the past five years, the Tour has raised more than $100,000 for the Virginia-Highland Civic Association. Tour tickets are $25 in advance at vahitourofhomes.org or $30 the weekend of the event.

Avondale Estates Tour of Homes & Holiday Market

Trolleys will be ferrying customers to this year’s stops on the Avondale Estates Tour of Homes and Holiday Market on Dec. 15 from 3 to 8 p.m. (the market is open noon to 6). Pick up the trolley at the Avondale First Baptist Church at the corner of Covington and Stratford Roads. This year’s tour spans 80 years beginning with an Avondale “original” built when the city was established in 1926, a recently renovated 30s bungalow, a renovated 60s ranch-style home, a home built in the 90s on the “newest street” in town and town home built in 2003. Tickets may be purchased for $12 in advance at Avondale City Hall, Finders Keepers Furniture, REAL Salon and Seventeen Steps or for $15 on the day of the tour at the Avondale Community Club. Home for the Holidays

Formerly known as The Christmas House, the newly rechristened event began in mid-November and continues through Dec. 8. to benefit the Southeastern Horticultural Society. This year’s home is at 58 Blackland Road and has been decorated by some of the city’s most noted interior designers. The home is open for tours Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Real Estate Briefs Crescent Communities has broken ground on Crescent Howell Mill, a $47 million, 256-unit luxury apartment community between Buckhead and Midtown. The development is expected to open spring 2015. Crescent Howell Mill will be built on 2.2 acres adjacent to future restaurant and retail development on Howell Mill Road at the intersection of Collier Road. The community will be part of an eight-acre mixed-use site with the first phase including 11,000 square feet of stand-alone retail and restaurant space.
