Solidarité with the City of Light We had just finalized the layout for this December issue when news broke of the terror attacks in Paris. Within a few hours, the SkyView Ferris wheel in Downtown, which once sat near the Louvre, was lit in the French tricolor – blue, white and red – in a show of solidarity. The Georgia Aquarium followed suit, along with the 191 Peachtree building and City Hall. It was encouraging to see my hometown show support for one of

my adopted hometowns. I’ve been a frequent visitor to Paris for the past 20 years, have friends there and have written a trilogy of novels set in the city. Once I made sure everyone was accounted for and safe, I turned back to editing the galley of the third novel, Leaving Paris, which will be out in the spring. Since all three books explore unrest and terrorism in Paris – and are set in and around the 11th arrondissement where the attacks took place – it made for a surreal weekend. The novel is set in 2005, but there is a character who is eerily prescient about the attacks he sees on the horizon. I’m not going to delve into the politics and my own opinions about the “war on terror,” but will leave you with a poem. In times of trouble, fear, stress and uncertainty, I’ve always turned to poetry for solace. Perhaps you’ll find some in this poem that I wrote in 2012 after a visit to the City of Light.

the history center’s new entryway, part of a $21 million renovation of the building, reopened last month. The unveiling marks roughly the halfway point in a renovation and expansion that officials say is intended to make the history center’s home on West Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead more inviting and less, well, stodgy. “It’s not just the physical changes, it’s the cultural changes and the mindset changes we’ve had at this organization,” said Hillary Hardwick, vice president of marketing communications at the center. “It’s all about the visitor.” The new atrium is roughly twice the size of the old entryway and the design of the new facade – a curve of glass and limestone set on a granite base – is intended to make the building more visible from West Paces Ferry. Inside, McQuigg said, designers want to make it “feel like a true civic building.” “I’m hoping it will become a cultural landmark in years to come,” McQuigg said. The new entryway is part of a parade of changes from new exhibits to a new, 23,000-square-foot building to house the Cyclorama, which is moving from Grant Park. As part of the project, the history center plans to restore “Battle of Atlanta,” the circular painting in the display. Atlanta History Center President Sheffield Hale said the Cyclorama would be restored to its original size and shape, with pieces cut away restored to show the painting as it was originally created in 1884. Hale said a 1980s renovation of the Cyclorama building essentially turned it in an “amusement ride” with revolving stadium seating. The history center will restore the circular viewing platform that gives visitors a more commanding look of the painting and diorama of
figures the way it was intended to be seen. Hale said during last month’s Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods’ meeting that the new Cyclorama building would open in 2017 while construction and restoration was still under way so the public could watch it unfold. The completed Cyclorama will be ready in 2018, he said. The new structure housing the painting will rise 35 feet above the ground and extend 15 feet below ground level. It will be connected to the center’s current building by a glass-enclosed breezeway containing “The Texas,” a Civil War-vintage train engine. Hale said the train will be visible on West Paces Ferry Road and will help draw in visitors. In January, the center plans to open a new temporary exhibit called “Atlanta in 50 Objects.” Then, next April, the center opens a new permanent exhibit on the history of Atlanta. Also in April, Souper Jenny plans to relocate its Buckhead location to the lobby of the history center building. In a press release, the center promised the café “will be a cross between a chic, funky local café and coffee shop.” Jennifer Levison, founder and owner of Souper Jenny, called the move to the 4,017-square-foot location “a perfect fit for the culture of Souper Jenny.” “When the Atlanta History Center first approached me about the idea, I was skeptical,” she said in a press release. “I always had a preconceived notion about what the history center was and who they attracted, and didn’t think our bohemian café was a good fit. It is apparent their enthusiastic focus is to turn these old perceptions upside down.” The center says it also plans to install a bookstore featuring a mix of specialty sections and topics, including A t l a n t a I N t o w n P a p e r. c o m

Opinions differ over park’s proposed walking trails By Joe Earle A proposal to add walking trails in a portion of Atlanta Memorial Park drew widely varying reactions Nov. 5 when presented to the city park’s neighbors. Consultant Jill Sluder, a landscape architect with HGOR, outlined a plan that would add two miles of 5-foot-wide concrete trails around the perimeter of the Buckhead park and another mile of trails within the park that would be made from materials that would allow water to pass through them. In addition to the trails, she said, consultants working for the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy proposed removing invasive plants from the park and cutting down five trees she said were hazardous. She said the five trees to be removed were among 800 “specimen” trees in the park and that the trees that were removed would be replaced. The work, if approved by the city, would cost the conservancy about $1 million, she said. The conservancy also has proposed extensive renovations to the nearby Bobby Jones Golf Course and Bitsy Grant Tennis Center. “You have a lot of people using the park,” Sluder told about 60 people who gathered at Northside United Methodist Church for her presentation. “The odd thing is they’re not in the park. They’re in the streets. Let’s get these folks off the streets.” But her proposal met sharp criticism from some neighbors who argued the work was an unnecessary expense and could increase flooding and traffic in the area. “I hate to say it, but I have had it,” John Whitney said. “I have had it with the conservancy. I have worked for 45 years to protect this park as a haven for wildlife and now you are going to ruin it.” Whitney said he opposed everything in the consultants’ plan. “It’s a railroad locomotive going down the track and it’s unstoppable,” he said. But other residents welcomed the proposals to open up the park to more users. “I think it’s a great plan,” resident Bob Caton said. “Anything to get the city of Atlanta to have more accessible parks is what we need to improve livability of the city, which is pretty much a concrete jungle now.” And Andrew Lunde said he had “mixed feelings” after listening to Sluder’s presentation. “I think having a sidewalk around the circumference would be an improvement,” he said, “but the interior path, I’m not so sure it’s going to make it substantially better than what we’ve got now.”
A Place in Peril? Bobby Jones Golf Course made The Georgia Trust’s 2016 Places in Peril list, much to the chagrin of the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy (AMPC). The golf course is second on the list as plans move forward to redesign the historic course from 18 holes to nine. Completed in 1933 to honor the golf legend, The Trust says the course’s clubhouse is also under threat of being demolished. However, AMPC said in a statement it disagreed with the intent of the peril designation, which was made by the Friends of Bobby Jones Golf Course. The group opposes transforming the course to nine holes or using the clubhouse for any other purpose. The statement said: AMPC will continue in its mission to make Atlanta Memorial Park a beautiful, environmentally sensitive and sustainable park, accessible and connected to the neighborhoods and the City, by enhancing the park, tennis and golf experiences through a collaborative process of renovation, restoration and preservation. AMPC acknowledges The Georgia Trust for recognizing the deteriorating condition of the golf course and clubhouse. Both are deserving of significant capital investment to ensure that the clubhouse is renovated and that the golf course is brought up to current safety standards, incorporating environmental improvements that will ensure the legacy of Bobby Jones is preserved for generations to come.

BELTLINE UPDATE A roundup of progress and projects By Collin Kelley The Atlanta BeltLine continues to move forward with various projects as funding becomes available. The extension of the Eastside Trail and the Southside Trail on the Atlanta BeltLine could be coming soon. BeltLine officials are reviewing project bids for the Eastside Trail extension, which will see the trail continue from Irwin Street to Memorial Drive. A request for qualifications is out to companies who want to bid for design of the Southside Trail, which would take the BeltLine to Glenwood Avenue and beyond. While Beltline officials could not comment on the specifics of proposals or the project timeline, they did confirm to Curbed Atlanta that funding has been secured for the extension project, and they have procured the portion of rail line where construction would take place. Creating performance spaces on the BeltLine have also taken top priority in the last half of the year. The Atlanta branch of the American Institute of Architects selected a design by Tim Bragan, Sylvan Miles and Harry Ross for a permanent stage to be located in Adair Park along the Westside Trail. The winning design includes an amphitheater made of reclaimed materials such as
concrete slabs, light rail and industrial siding. On the Eastside, POND & Company has been chosen to help lead design efforts for the Reynoldstown Stage and Performance area along the BeltLine. The concept for the project was proposed by Georgia Tech professor Tristan AlHaddad who will be a member of the design team. The design, funded through a National Endowment of the Arts Our Town Grant, will combine a permanent stage structure and landscaped public art exhibit space. The BeltLine also put out a call for proposals to develop the Murphy Crossing site on the Westside Trail. The site is comprised of 16 acres that were once the State Farmers Market in southwest Atlanta. The call for proposals included directions on potential redevelopment of existing buildings, inclusion of workforce housing and scenarios to encourage job growth. The 3-mile Westside Trail has been under construction for more than a year, and will connect four parks and four schools. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2017, and will include a multi-use trail and preparation for future Atlanta Streetcar transit infrastructure.

Edmund Park, a neighborhood of 80-plus homes located on the north side of East Rock Springs Road, about a half-mile east of Morningside/Lenox Park, was annexed by the city from unincorporated DeKalb on Nov. 1. Students who live in the community will be able to start attending Atlanta Public Schools effective in January. The community banded together and asked for the annexation, assisted by Atlanta City Councilman Alex Wan and Atlanta School Board member Matt Westmoreland. According to Joy Myrick and Donna Boynton, Realtors with Beacham and Company, homes built by Wilmont Williams and Hedgewood range from $500,000 into the upper $700,000 range. “These are really great values now compared to other City of Atlanta/Morningside Elementary homes,” Myrick said. Faye DiMassimo will serve as the new general manager for the $250 million Renew Atlanta infrastructure bond program. In this new role, DiMassimo will oversee the design, construction and completion of more than 200 transportation and municipal facility projects, including construction of the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Natatorium in the Historic Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. The Renew Atlanta infrastructure bond program was approved by more than eight in 10 voters in a special election held on March 17. DiMassimo has served as the director of the Cobb County Department of Transportation for nearly six years, where she has overseen a $36 million operating budget with more than 160 staff. The Woodruff Foundation will donate $10 million to the Georgia World Congress Center for its Centennial Olympic Park plan, according to a report from the AJC. The same foundation two decades ago helped lay the groundwork to transform the 21-acre park into a downtown jewel. The changes envisioned for Centennial include new event space on park grounds with a downstairs restaurant, turning a section of Andrew Young International Boulevard into a pedestrian walkway and a new entrance to the green space.

Atlanta has lost its bid for $29.3 million in federal transportation funding to expand the Atlanta Streetcar. The funding would have extended the existing 2.7 mile loop from Downtown to the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail. Atlanta has previously won two federal grants to fund the streetcar and BeltLine projects. The Atlanta Streetcar has been plagued by staffing, safety and security issues since it opened last December, and was chastised by federal transit authorities.

Hard Rock Hotel to be built next door to Falcons stadium Hard Rock International plans to open Hard Rock Hotel Atlanta in spring 2018, according to a media statement from the City of Atlanta. Developed along with Bolton Atlanta LP, the 220-room Hard Rock International managed hotel will be located next to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, future home of the Atlanta Falcons, in Castleberry Hill. “The new Hard Rock Hotel in Castleberry Hill will offer a new, best-in-class option for the millions of people visiting Atlanta each year,” said Mayor Kasim Reed. “In addition to serving tourists and visitors, this new hotel will serve as a powerful economic anchor, bringing new jobs and further investment to our downtown corridor and stadium neighborhoods.” Amenities at the Hard Rock Hotel Atlanta will include a heated outdoor swimming pool, and a rooftop bar and restaurant. There will also be the hotel’s Rock Spa, Body Rock workout facility, Rock Shop for branded merchandise, and, of course, a new Hard Rock Cafe filled with music memorabilia. The hotel, which will front Centennial Olympic Park Drive, will also offer live entertainment and shows, and contain 10,660 square feet of ballroom and banquet facility space.

Cama Fina helps mothers, babies and businesses in Nicaragua
Special
An ambulance waits outside the Casa Materna ready to assist a mother in need in Quilali, Nicaragua. Intown nonprofit Cama Fina is helping to raise funds to keep the hospital open.
By Clare S. Richie Cama Fina (short for Casa Materna Financiamiento or maternity home financing) is ready to change the way people donate. The nonprofit seeks to leverage the power of microfinance to fight poverty, and improve infant and maternal health in Nicaragua. Co-founder Nishant Kishore, an Emory University Masters in Public Health graduate student, started working on this model in 2012, while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Quilali, Nicaragua. While volunteering for three years in the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, he saw how a system of maternity clinics, the Casa Maternas, saved the lives of babies and their mothers. Casa Maternas provided rural, pregnant women with access to an institutional birth with medical supervision, and educational sessions about breastfeeding, nutrition, hygiene and family planning. By transporting a pregnant woman to a Casa Materna two weeks prior to her due date, she has time to learn how care for her newborn prior to the baby’s delivery and time to rest afterward. “I live very far away [3.5 hours] and it’s better and safer to give birth here

in the hospital,” 23-year-old Adenia explained in her video interview. Despite having a proven track record of reducing maternal and infant mortality, Casa Maternas do not have stable funding and were hit hard by the recession. According to Kishore, the Casa Materna Quilali is operating at half of its 2008 budget with a 50 percent increase in patient visits. “We wanted to support the good work of the Casa Materna Quilali with more reliable funding – like an endowment,” Kishore explained. On a long bus ride, Kishore met a friend of a friend who had worked for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Latin America. This chance meeting sparked the idea for Cama Fina. Individuals and families who use micro-loans for their businesses, even in remote areas with average earnings of less than a $4 a day, can create a better life. “Cama Fina would be the connection between these two – MFIs and Casa Maternas,” Kishore said. Pro Mujer (translated Pro Woman) came on board as Cama Fina’s MFI partner due to their focus on women, strong international reputation, financial services, business and empowerment training and health care support. Over a quarter century, Pro Mujer disbursed more than $1 billion in small loans, and reached more than 1.6 million women and their 6.4 million children and family members in Argentina, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. A typical first loan is $100, with a business plan developed with a Pro Mujer credit officer. Because of the support received, Pro Mujer’s client repayment rate is more than 96 percent. Here’s how the model works. Cama Fina secures donations. Pro Mujer converts the donations to capital that is lent primarily to rural Nicaraguan women to launch or grow small businesses. Interest paid back on the loans then funds Casa Materna Quilali’s operating costs. “Every dollar donated is invested in the local economy, in women,” said Kishore. Female business owners will improve their quality of life and rural women will have access safer birth experiences, he added. Once donation levels reach $50,000, Casa Materna Quilali will receive flat monthly payments to continue providing

services to prenatal women. At $150,000, it will be fully funded for the foreseeable future, and Cama Fina can set its sights on replicating this model across Nicaragua. “During this giving season, Cama Fina is beginning it’s fundraising push,” Kishore said. To implement it’s innovative
model, Cama Fina seeks donations, and fundraising, public relations and marketing volunteers from Atlanta with a global moral compass to support healthy mothers, healthy babies and a growing economy in Nicaragua. For more information, visit camafina.org.

TimmyDaddy By Tim Sullivan
The time we didn’t see Rock City By Tim Sullivan Let me tell you about the time we didn’t See Rock City. You know the place outside of Chattanooga with the incredible rock formations and hiking trails on Lookout Mountain where you can see seven states at once? Yeah, we didn’t see that. We were supposed to, but we didn’t. Our fall calendar is a blitzkrieg of baseball games, birthday parties, other parties, festivals and football. So when Elliott’s baseball game set for Saturday. Oct. 24 was canceled in advance because of a scheduling conflict, we found ourselves with the oasis of a plan-free day. We were giddy at first. Should we do something or perhaps even better yet, nothing? I was torn. I can waste a day watching football with the best of ‘em and not driving four hours on a Saturday is always fun, too… but admittedly, the rest of the family might get antsy. Kristen had no such ambivalence. We were going to “See Rock City.” She’s always wanted to and now we had the perfect opportunity. If we did nothing, she argued, the kids would be watching TV or looking at an iPad until they were miserable at the mere suggestion they do something else. She was right, as usual. So when our friends invited us for a drink on Friday night we politely declined, “Not tonight. Getting up early to See Rock City!” But we all slept in a smidge later than we intended to. I threw a questioning glance Kristen’s way and her unspoken reply was clear: Don’t screw this up. I got in the shower and gave myself a pep talk. It’ll be great. You’re going to love it. The kids are going to love it. We’ll get a birdhouse! We’ll get a bumper sticker! You must convey this or all will be lost.
Special
While the Sullivans of Decatur couldn’t quite make it to Rock City, the Pintos of Stirling, NJ enjoyed their trip to Chattanooga.
All was lost. The kids moaned as if I had declared this Clean the Toilets Saturday. Elliott wanted to go to his schoolyard and play Wall Ball. Seriously? I googled up Rock City images – see we’re going here today. Isn’t that awesome? You guys like hiking. You do it all the time at your afterschool program, right? We’ll get a birdhouse! We’ll get a bumper sticker! The Pintos went and said this place is basically a giant, scenic gift shop – you’ll love it! Apparently it was still not as thrilling as a match of father-son Wall Ball – a game that is meant to be played with 10 or more at his school – the place he groaned about all week. He added salt by pointing out that
we adults were excited about hiking because we never get to do it but they have to do it every week. Margo simply added that going to Rock City was “a terrible idea” without offering an alternative plan. I might need to wean her off those presidential debates. We’re not completely inept at getting our kids to do things, but the prospect of them whining about it over breakfast and then a sour, 120mile drive was pretty unappealing. Kristen seethed in an adjacent room, eavesdropping on my failed pitch. She was folding laundry like a wobbly ceiling fan on high. At any given moment she might come completely unhinged and lethal. I summoned my best efforts to save the Saturday. We carved a pumpkin into
an owl and cooked the seeds. We went to Agnes Scott College to ride bikes and play football in the quad. Elliott and I even went up to his school and played a smashing round of Wall Ball. On paper it was a decent day, but the pall of family failure hung thick. Should we have been more insistent or does their reaction indicate we schedule too much already? The mood lightened that evening when Kristen took the kids out for FroYo. Hindsight being 20/20 I’m now thinking they must have FroYo in Rock City, right? Tim Sullivan grew up in a large family in the Northeast and now lives with his small family in Oakhurst. He can be reached at tim@sullivanfinerugs. com.

ACE IS THE PLACE… FOR GIFTS Oldest Intown hardware creates in-store boutique By Kitsy Rose One of Intown’s best-kept secrets has revealed itself not only as the last independently owned, old-fashioned hardware store, but also as a place to buy gifts for the holidays. Intown Ace Hardware at 854 N. Highland Ave. in Virginia-Highland is a go-to when it comes to repair needs, but the store is living up to its wellknown tagline, “Ace is the place,” by adding unique gift and garden items. “We decided to enhance the garden and gift department last year upon noticing that the area was lacking gift options at the time,” said owner Doug Eifrid. “Our garden manager, John Robinson, has made it a priority to find unique as well as some locally made items to create a boutique of sorts in our expanded garden area.” Handmade jewelry and locally designed ceramics complement highend tools from Burgon & Ball. Colorful pottery pieces from Chive mix well with burlap pillows from Park Hill and glass bird bowls and feeders from Evergreen. Collapsible and colorful Presto buckets, Mad Mats, Yo Sox, Peepers reading glasses, Tula Hats and more can all be found in the store. Step outside into the large, outdoor garden area and you’ll find teak tables and benches, outdoor dining chairs, weatherproofed pillows, colorful and decorative signs, pots in all shapes and sizes, and gorgeous plants, trees and succulents. There are also wreaths, ornaments from Christopher Radko and many more seasonal items. Known as Clements Hardware until brothers Doug and Joe Eifrid purchased

the store in 1979 and changed the name to Intown Ace Hardware Atlanta, the building was originally opened in the 1940s – making it the oldest continuously running hardware store in Atlanta. To this day it remains a family owned and operated business as sister Suzie handles the bookkeeping and Doug’s son, Micah Eifrid, serves as general manager. The building was expanded in 1989 to accommodate a full-line garden center including plants, tools, mulches, chemicals and fertilizers. For more information, visit intownaceatlanta.com.

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) presented its 17th annual Developments of Excellence awards at the State of the Region breakfast, honoring three developments and one great place. The top award, the 2015 Development of Excellence, went to Ponce City Market, developed by Jamestown Properties. In honoring PCM, officials called the 90-year-old former Sears & Roebuck building a “showpiece complex” for its adaptive use into retail, restaurants, offices and homes, and an “economic and cultural catalyst” for the Old Fourth Ward and the city. The 2015 Exceptional Merit for Context-Sensitive Urban Infill Development went to Inman Quarter developers JPX Works, South City Partners and ELV Associates. The 3.3-acre mixed-use development in Inman Park has 200 apartments and 40,000 square feet of retail and restaurants. Also winning awards: Revival On Main in Kennesaw (2015 LCI Achievement Award) and the Marietta Square (2015 Great Place). Henri’s Bakery and Café has reached an agreement with Alliance Residential Company to sell its Buckhead location. Currently, the property is under contract and in the due diligence period. The real estate developer plans to incorporate the award-winning bakery into a mixed-use project on the site. Henri’s, which also has a Sandy Springs location, will continue to stay open and operate on Irby Avenue for the foreseeable future, though it may move to a nearby location temporarily during the possible construction.

Even before Thanksgiving, I was thinking about buying gifts for my family and friends. I learned the hard way that waiting too long to shop for the people in my life usually results in poorly thought out, last-minute presents like gift cards and stuff I grabbed on a hurried run to Target. Lucky for us Intowners, there are plenty of alternative spots to pick up unique gifts made by local artisans. Whether you’re looking for gifts for kids, for your partner, for a friend, or for yourself, these shops have plenty of cool offerings to choose from. Buying locally made items from independent shops does a lot to further the economy by funding the continued work of the artist behind the product. Over time, I’ve become familiar with quite a few local artisans whose work is on display and for sale in some of my regular haunts. Behind the scenes at many of the hippest shops here Intown are some truly inspirational and passionate people. I recently met with some of these local business owners who shared their thoughts on indie gifts from the other side of the counter. “Smaller shops are more familiar with their customers, what their customer likes,” said Kristen Bell of Treehouse Kid & Craft in Decatur. “We can offer more services like free wrapping and good customer service that can impact shoppers in a big way.” Treehouse, located on DeKalb Avenue near Thinking Man’s Tavern, is a sensory overload, with cute and noncommercialized gifts for all the kids (and kids at heart) in your life. They also have an event space in the back that they rent out for birthdays and the like. The company began in Athens where the main shop is still in operation, and Kristen’s sister Kim recently opened this branch in Atlanta. Malene Davis of the Beehive, one of the oldest collectives in the city, said shopping locally helps sustain communities. “When a dollar is spent at the Beehive on a local product, that dollar is then paid out to the designer for sales; thereafter, that same dollar goes forward to sustain the community where that designer and her/his family lives,” explained Davis. Beehive, located in the Edgewood Retail District, offers jewelry, clothing, gifts and much more. With informational cards on many of the displays, customers can better understand who and where the products came from. “Local businesses are so, so important,” said Lynne Tanzer of Hodgepodge Coffee House. “They employ local people, support and sponsor local events and charities, allowing community to thrive. We are more invested in our customers and go the extra mile to make you happy because we know you personally -- you are our kids’ teachers, our dentist, and
our neighbors.” Beyond the inherent value in helping a local artist to make money from their work, Lynne appreciates the ability to feel like she’s making a difference in the artists’ lives. “I can’t explain the joy that comes with writing a commission check and knowing that it’s going to our neighbor to buy their kid new boots for school or toward their grad school tuition fund. It’s magic!” Hodgepodge has a strong artist customer base, and the shop has regular art shows. Shelves and walls near the counter display a wide array of smallscale, locally produced gifts and artwork. Rebecca Hannah of Young Blood Boutique in Poncey-Highland also spoke of the benefit to supporting local shops and artisans beyond the inherent boost to the community. “Local businesses are the flavor of a city,” she said. “We’re lucky to have so many amazing, locally owned shops and restaurants in Atlanta, and for us, these places contribute immensely to a richer life experience.” Stop by this shop for great jewelry, a wide selection of funky greeting cards, hangable art and plenty of cool gifts, sure to please even the most difficult person on your gift list. As of Dec. 1, the shop will now be opening for extended hours starting at 10 a.m. for all your shopping needs. Different stores vary in their approaches to the management of their stock. For example, Made Again features artist exhibitions at the shop. “Made Again is not only a multidiscipline art gallery from local artisans, but it is a resource hub for artists wanting to excel their companies,” said owner Margeau Bull. Bull said the photography, design and marketing assistance that the company offers to participating artists is another way that her small business is able to give back to the community it serves. Made Again features art, furniture, jewelry, bath products and more at Inman Quarter in Inman Park. “We work hard to support the artists and makers in our community by being accessible and giving 60 to 70 percent of profits back to the artists,” said AC Smallwood of Byrd’s Box, a shop that began as a pop-up and has become a permanent fixture on Auburn Avenue. “We partner with local charities and organizations to make sure that our impact to the community is as positive as possible.” The shop sells clothing, art prints, zines, gifts like candles and jewelry produced by local makers. Sara Lamond of Fig & Flower Natural Beauty on North Highland Avenue said the real value of shopping local is the old adage of “putting community back in our communities.” The shop sells carefully curated bath and body items that use only the safest, purest and most sustainable ingredients. “I’ve met so many of my neighbors through the store, many of whom I now consider my friends. When you shop local, you’re supporting a neighbor, a A t l a n t a I N t o w n P a p e r. c o m

AC Smallwood, Byrd’s Box 171 Auburn Ave - thebyrdsbox.com neighborhood, and building connections that make those neighborhoods great places to live.” “It’s important to shop local to be part of a community and support our friends’ growth and dreams,” said Cami Adair of Blabla Kids. The small shop is tucked away in Virginia-Highland and is unique in that they design their own products like the famous knitted dolls in the studio shop. Though it’s not realistic to buy everything locally, there is something special about being able to know you’ve contributed to
your community. “It creates synergy and good karma,” Adair said. Shannon and Christy of Indie Craft Experience (ICE) agree that supporting one another within the community is imporant. ICE is an organization that brings together tons of vendors for their seasonal pop-up markets, and now has opened a permanent storefront in Candler Park. “Buying directly from an artist means you know exactly where your money is going,” said Christy. “That’s pretty powerful!”

YOUR GUIDE FOR AN ECO-FRIENDLY LIFESTYLE
AN APPRECIATION FOR NATURE
Stephanie Stuckey Benfield takes passion for environment to next level By Dyana Bagby As a child, Stephanie Stuckey Benfield took walks along Cumberland Island beach with her father, Georgia Congressman Bill Stuckey. It was on this stretch of land with her dad – and also while boating on the Okefenokee Swamp and while camping with her family – where Benfield learned to love the outdoors. “My father was in Congress representing South and Middle Georgia. We had a home there [on Cumberland Island] and spent every summer there,” Benfield said. Congressman Stuckey, a Democrat from Eastman, drafted the federal legislation ensuring the protection of Cumberland Island from development and keeping its natural habitat unharmed. He was also instrumental in pushing through federal legislation to protect Okefenokee Swamp in the 1970s. Watching her father work to conserve the land he loved made a significant impression on Benfield. “My father was politically involved
in environmental issues. I remember him advocating on these issues. And we went outdoors a fair amount. Being around that gives you an appreciation for nature at an early age,” she said. As the Director of Sustainability for the City of Atlanta, named to the post in April by Mayor Kasim Reed, Benfield has taken that love of the outdoors she acquired as a young girl and has fashioned it into into a career of working to conserve and preserve the city’s, and the state’s, natural resources. Before heading up the city’s Office of Sustainability, Benfield, who is an attorney, served three years as the executive director of GreenLaw (“the perfect marriage between my love for the environment and my love of the law,” she said), a nonprofit organization providing legal and technical support on environmental issues. And before that, Benfield was a well-known member of the state legislature where she served 14 years, representing DeKalb County. “My mom was very active and volunteered a lot in the community. My

parents showed me that you could take your passion to the next level. Growing up in that environment — it never occurred to me that I couldn’t run for office,” Benfield said. When Benfield took office in 1999, she knew she wanted to focus on affecting change in three areas that she cared deeply about — women’s issues, family issues and the environment. “I was very mindful of representing my Stephanie Stuckey constituency. Benfield My district included Emory and Decatur, and both are hubs for environmental activism,” she said. Her past experience set her up to work for Atlanta, said Mayor Reed. “Stephanie Stuckey Benfield has distinguished herself in her advocacy for sustainability and our environment from her time in the Georgia General Assembly to her leadership at GreenLaw. I look forward to working with Ms. Benfield to keep Atlanta on the path to being one of the top sustainable cities,” he said in a statement. Benfield’s and Reed’s relationship goes back to when both were legislators – he was first elected to the state House in 1998. Benfield credits the mayor with being able to form alliances with unlikely groups – such as Gov. Nathan Deal and the business community – by making good economic cases for sustainability. “I see Atlanta as this blue dot in a state of red where environmental issues can move forward,” she said. Two other Georgia cities – Decatur and Roswell – also have sustainability directors. In September, the Atlanta City
Council unanimously passed a Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020. Also, in the near future, the city plans to purchase 20 electric vehicles for city employees to use; currently, the city has two donated electric cars. Two hundred city buildings are now being retrofitted for energy and water efficiency through an energy and savings contract as well. But it is in the area of solar energy where Benfield sees Atlanta being a leader for the entire state. Benfield said she aims to install about 1.5 megawatts of solar power in city-owned buildings. “I think the City of Atlanta can serve as a leader on solar energy and really help advance the solar industry in the South. Good, clean energy is good for business, saves money and creates green jobs,” she said. And while her job is about finding ways to conserve the environment, Benfield makes sure to find time to also take in the natural resources Atlanta and Georgia has to offer and enjoy the great outdoors with her husband and two children, like she did as a child with her family. Because being outside, communing with trees and rivers and family, is what makes the work worthwhile, she said. “I just find it therapeutic to be outdoors. I enjoy camping, hiking, paddling,” she says. For the past several summers, she and her husband and two children have participated in Paddle Georgia, a project of the Georgia River Network, where people paddle for eight days and over 100 miles on different rivers. “Being outside, with clean air and water, is where you can interact with others on a real and human level, when you don’t have the usual distractions you have in usual work day – you don’t have cellphones or TV or computers,” she said. “I love not only to be able to be out in nature but to be in nature with my family.”

The Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge (Atlanta BBC) recently welcomed Dr. Kathleen Hogan, U.S. Department of Energy Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency, to a multifamily housing roundtable discussion at the offices of Central Atlanta Progress. “As a Better Buildings Challenge partner, Atlanta has been a national leader in energy and water savings,” said Hogan. With over 100 million square feet in over more than 400 buildings citywide since its launch in 2011, the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge aims at increasing energy and water efficiency 20 percent by the year 2020. The Energy Department’s Better Buildings Challenge program recognized Arby’s Restaurant Group, Inc., for its leadership in energy efficiency and 38 percent energy savings at its flagship restaurant in Atlanta. The restaurant, located at 1751 Howell Mill Road, was remodeled in April and is the most energy efficient Arby’s location in the country. Arby’s has committed to 20 percent energy savings over 10 years, and is already more than halfway to meeting its goal. The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center has re-designated the City of Decatur a Silver Walk Friendly Community. Decatur has a strong commitment to improving walkability, and offers several walking programs including Team Decatur, Walk With a Doc, Bright at Night Walks and Sunday Strolls. The city’s Safe Routes to School Program is a model for the state. Walk Friendly Communities is a national program that recognizes communities for their commitment to pedestrian safety.

The Ellis Hotel has been named one of only four green hotels in Georgia, certified under Green Seal Standard GS33 Silver. The certification, based on an independent evaluation, demonstrates The Ellis Hotel’s commitment to providing safe and healthy indoor air, conserving water, saving energy and reducing waste. “Sustainability and the health of our guests and staff is a top priority,” said Kim Kleisner, general manager of The Ellis Hotel. “We are proud to be an industry leader with our environmentally conscious operations and are honored to have earned the Green Seal certification.”
The Georgia Water Coalition has released its 2015 Dirty Dozen list highlighting 12 of the worst offenses to the state’s waters. The annual Dirty Dozen shines a spotlight on threats to Georgia’s water resources as well as the polluters and state policies or failures that ultimately harm—or could harm—Georgia property owners, downstream communities, fish and wildlife, hunters and anglers, and boaters and swimmers. Locally, the Chattahoochee River made the list twice: at number 3 for the Environmental Protection Division’s “water grab” that threatens the state’s most vital water supply and number 5 for tubers leaving their trash behind. The entire list can be read at garivers.org. Since the late 1970s, Post Properties has made an intentional effort to reduce its apartment homes’ footprints, and that effort has paid off. The High Rise at Post Alexander in Buckhead has received the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) bronze-level certification. The independent, third-party verification assures that the building is designed and built to high performance in site design, indoor environmental quality, building operation and maintenance, and resource, water and energy efficiency. Julie Sadlier’s expertise in the Atlanta real estate market could not have worked out better in my recent transactions as we merged from two households down to one. In my home listing, her understanding of the current conditions and the smart improvements to make for selling secured a sales price tens of thousands above the recommendation of other agents. Not only that, but with her marketing, photography and overall professionalism I had multiple offers and a contract within 3 days of listing. That savvy also translated to our home purchase where she ensured that we successfully negotiated a fair deal and did not overpay in market conditions that can best be described as CRAZY. She never hesitated to secure ‘one more visit’ to a property, and her network of local home experts has been invaluable on both the selling and buying sides. As a very process- driven person I was appreciative of Julie’s attention to detail and the level of communication that she provided as we completed 3 transactions (2 sales, 1 purchase) within a 3 month period. Julie is an outstanding real estate agent whom I heartily recommend.

We had the fried pickles, their golden crust flexible enough to bend with the wet insides but stable enough to contain them without tearing. We had the jalapeñofried cheese grits, formed as perfect, two-bite nuggets with only the barest, least offensive kind of peppery jolt to the taste buds. Let’s not even state the obvious about the french fries. Aside from the fried, there is plenty of delicious color. The black cow was frothy and delicious, served in proper soda fountain style. The potato salad left all the red skin in the mix, for an earthy riff on a classic in need of refreshing. The corn muffins were bursting with actual niblets of corn. The avocado in the omelette was both smooth and startling. Manuel’s Tavern to close Dec. 27 for renovations By Collin Kelley The New York Times recently published a feature on Georgia State University lecturer and filmmaker Ruth Dusseault’s project to digitally archive all of the memorabilia on the walls of Manuel’s Tavern before it closes for several months of renovation. The haunt of politicos, journalists, storytellers and generations of Atlantans will have temporary last call on Dec. 27. The Poncey-Highland property that Manuel’s sits on was purchased by Green Street Properties, which will build a mixed-use development on the large parking lot next door to the tavern. Patrons of the 60-year-old bar, opened by former DeKalb County chief executive Manuel Maloof, worried what would happen to their beloved watering hole, but current owner Brian Maloof (Manuel’s son) said bringing the building up to code and a new kitchen were the biggest items in the plan. So, yes, all the stuff is going back on the wall. I had lunch at Manuel’s a couple of weeks ago and had to snap a few photos of my own. I’ve been eating, drinking, watching World Cup games and election returns since I was of legal age some 25 years ago. I consider myself a regular with a regular order: Manuel’s burger medium, a cup of Brunswick stew instead of fries and cheese sticks for an appetizer. That three or four months of renovation better go fast!

Perspectives in Architecture
Respecting the Past, Inspiring the Future
Melody L. Harclerode
Photos by Dorian Shy/Framework Photographic The reading and work area of the new Metropolitan Library is light, airy and colorful.
By Melody Harclerode Editor’s Note: In this occasional series, Harclerode will highlight libraries built with funding from the 2008 voterapproved Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System Bond Referendum. A new chapter begins for communities along Metropolitan Parkway in the City of Atlanta. Although criminal activity on this hilly thoroughfare in Southwest Atlanta received headlines for years, the recent grand opening of the new Metropolitan Library merits attention. Residents in adjoining neighborhoods, such as Capital View Manor, Adair Park and Sylvan Hills, hail the Metropolitan Library as a testament to the area’s revitalization. This library also reinforces the public commitment of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System to construct high-quality libraries with the passage of the AtlantaFulton Public Library System Bond Referendum in 2008. Local firm Smith Dalia Architects faced an interesting challenge when they were awarded the Metropolitan Library project. The project site for
the library featured the huge, longabandoned Capital View Baptist Church. As a firm with extensive experience in rehabilitating old structures like the Greystone in Piedmont Park, Smith Dalia and its lead architect Robyn Zurfluh, RA, along its partners AI3 and Craig Gaulden Davis, explored a range of design scenarios to save the old church. Numerous investigations and community meetings led to the conclusion that the best choice for the neighborhood and Fulton County was the construction of a new library at the site of the old church. Gayle Hunter Holloman, the AtlantaFulton Public Library System’s Interim Director of Library, Arts and Culture, praises how “the past became part of the future.” Zurfluh and her team salvaged granite from the exterior of the first floor of the Capital View Baptist Church to serve as outdoor seating and as an exterior wall finish for the new building. Four columns from the church draw visitors to a public plaza outside the entrance of the library. Back-lit stained glass from the church offers beautiful and noteworthy artwork at library entry. A set of church seats provide distinctive seating near the new copy and printing area.
Columns that once stood on the portico of Capital View Baptist Church now create an iconic gateway to the new library. The library was built on the site of the church.
Light fixtures from the old structure make new meeting spaces more memorable. For all the old features in the Metropolitan Library, this facility exudes best practices in new library design. A 3,000-pound sculpture of Albert Einstein has been officially unveiled on Georgia Tech’s campus. It sits at one of the busiest corridors – the northwest corner of Tech Green near the Bunger-Henry Building. American artist Robert Berks made the sculpture. It is his third and final likeness of the scientist. One is housed at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington D.C. The second found a home at the Israel Academy of Science and Humanities.
