ince Friday, the efforts and attention of Israel and Jews all over the world have been focused on the three boys -Naftali, Gilad, and Eyal, two of them high school students -- who were kidnapped while hitching a ride home from their yeshiva in Gush Etzion.

MAFTALI FRENKEL AGE 16

EYAL YIFRACH AGE 16

All over the world Tehillim (Psalms) and special prayers are being said not only in synagogues, but also in homes and at workplaces. More than 25,000 people gathered at the Kotel for a special prayer service. The Israel security forces are working around the clock but what can the rest of us do?

letter to the editor Editor, I want to commend Marcia Jaffe for the Outstanding article she wrote: JUNE 19th Edition, “It’s “IN” to Be Sexually Diverse, It’s Even “INNER” to be Jewishly So” That is a Long Title! (But, a Great, One!) I think Ms. Jaffe’s topic touched upon a Very Important Subject, we as readers should all think about. The United States, though, SLOWLY... is definitely Changing and it is Wonderful, that this Article Focused on several people and how eloquently, They told, “Their Stories.” I was very pleased, also-- to hear several, Atlanta Community Rabbis make their feelings Known on this subject and that is Very important--Informative. I learned something I previously did not know, that there Are More, Rabbis “Willing & Happy in Atlanta to perform Same Sex Marriage Ceremonies and Commitment Ceremonies.” That is the Way it Should Be--in my opinion. EQUALITY For ALL. Back in 2012, Our Daughter Married her Longtime Partner. We were So Happy that after 10 years of Sharing Their Lives, They, Too, wanted to Marry in a Religious Ceremony. We were So Very Happy and Honored, that We Met and Learned, that Wonderful, Rabbi Steven Lebow of Temple Kol Emeth would: “Gladly Officiate at Their Wedding--With Pleasure!” Everyone commented “Rabbi Steve” performed a Beautiful, Meaningful Ceremony and it could not have been a More Wonderful, Simcha for Our Family. After that Event, Our Family did travel to NYC, so They could Make Their Marriage “Legal” because of the “Attitude/Law in the State of Georgia.” They were Married There, as well but Rabbi Lebow Made Their Wedding Day--”Absolutely, Fantastic & Joyous!” We Thank Him--for That, So Much. Prior to contacting Rabbi Lebow, I called the Current, President of The Atlanta Rabbinical Council at that time, seeking the name of a Rabbi, who would be “Willing to Marry Our Daughter & her Partner.” (Her Future Wife) That Rabbi, whose Name will not be mentioned here, stated and I quote: “I can’t help you and I do not know of ANY Rabbi, who will do that.” I also had Another Rabbi in Atlanta state very “sternly”.....”No, I will Not, Marry Them.” This was a Rabbi, who knew my family, personally, and His attitude and tone was extremely Sad, for me to hear. In conclusion, Thank You, Rabbis in Atlanta and Elsewhere, who have Come to Realize, All Same Sex Couples, Should have the Privilege--Like, Every Loving, Committed Couple, to Be Married in a Jewish Ceremony, Surrounded by Family and Friends--To Have a SIMCHA! Yes, “The Times They Are, A Changin’’ and Thank You, Ms. Jaffe for Your Excellent, article. It Made My Heart Feel Good, as a Parent of a Wonderful, Same Sex Couple, who are So Happy and just Celebrated, Their 2nd Anniversary! Your article hopefully, Educated Many people about this Important Subject--Thank you. Sign Me, “A Subscriber to the AJT for 40+ Years!”

Incorporating Your Ketubah Into your Home Decor esthetically beautiful and rich in tradition, Ketubahs make great addition

I

have the privilege of working with many clients who choose to incorporate their ketubot in the overall design of their homes. To me, this sacred Jewish marriage document can be one of the most profound pieces showcased in a room. Whether decorated with ornate swirls or simple modern lines, Ketubahs are esthetically beautiful and rich in tradition. To me, the addition of a framed ketubah creates a sense of love, comfort and protection in the home. These days the options to create a unique and masterful ketubah are endless. Websites like ketubah.com and etsy.com feature an endless array of choices from hand painted certificates to paper cut documents. Newly engaged couples can easily become overwhelmed with the variety. Commissioning a ketubah is not unlike working with an interior designer to put together a room. National ketubah artist Melissa Dinwiddie spent many years working with clients to

create unique art. She advises clients to think clearly about style, size, color and shape before commissioning a piece. Buying a piece of art is something very personal; creating your own piece with a professional artist requires vision and introspection. It is paramount that both members of the couple approve of the design and style. A lifetime is a long time to be gazing at a framed piece of art that rubs you the wrong way. Whether you’ve deciding to commission unique art or you’re purchasing a print, one must be mindful of the base color and size. Both of these aspects will further affect how your ketubah will fit in your home. Remember, a good framer will match the matte and frame to the document and not to the décor of your house. I had a friend once commission a gorgeously hand-painted ketubah in specific colors she desired, but overlooked the base color of the paper. Her calligrapher picked a cream colored paper when my friend’s modern style would have been better matched to

white. The result was a ketubah that was matted and framed to compliment the cream color and was not reflective of her overall modern taste. She hung her ketubah, but he still talks about that mistake 10 years later. Once it’s framed, where to hang? There are important design elements to consider when hanging a ketubah. First, one must establish a room in which to hang it. This is, of course, a personal preference. Some couples cherish their ketubah as a private testimonial of their devotion to one another and prefer to honor its sanctity by placing it in the bedroom. I also have had clients who wanted their ketubot prominently displayed in view of all household guests. In these instances I often hang them in an elegant living room space. Size Matters After choosing a wall, the piece’s size comes into play. Many ketubot are large enough to dominate a single space, but a large wall or small ketubah could warrant a grouping of framed memorabilia. A ketubah expertly set amidst other marriage certificates or

Ketubah featured prominently in bedroom by Balance Design

family photos is an inviting attraction. Colorful or muted, extravagant or simple, ketubot reflect the taste of a couple at the moment of their nuptials. Even if these tastes change, the ketubah remains a snapshot of this joyous time in their lives. The art does not have to necessarily conform to the room. Most importantly, a ketubah should be celebrated, cherished and framed in a way that shows off the art. “Hey! Let’s Take This Outside!” COMMENTS FROM THE KOSHER KING Tenting for your guest space. Tenting for your caterer. Yes, they will need a space to stage from and possibly some pipe and drape for added privacy from the guest space. • Table and chair rental including delivery and pickup. • Power? Is there any for the band, DJ, caterer and other vendors? Many caterers have the necessary equipment to produce events in remote locations. Others need to rent. • Ask about additional equipment and travel charges. Ask about additional staffing charges from your caterer and other vendors. Do you need running water, fans or air conditioners, the need to rent golf carts or need to hire overnight security to watch all the equipment? Third-- Food Choices Think seasonal ingredients and create a menu that works with the venue. Listen to your caterer as they have done this before and therefore have the expertise to create a winning event. Match the style of food service with the venue. Fourth-- Rain Plan Don’t forget about that rain plan and let the guest know in your invitation that this is an outside event.

By David S. Covell SPECIAL FOR THE AJT ith the summer season well under way and with many events to be planned, we have dozens of clients interested in hosting outdoor events. But where to begin? First – Choose a Venue Look for a venue that can provide you with much of the ingredients you need – green space, privacy, parking, bathrooms and easy access for your guests. Nobody wants to schlep through woods (unless camping) or walk through muddy fields (unless it’s mud sliding day in summer camp) in order to go to an event. Think practical and think rain plan. Can your critical vendors achieve the vision at this site, or not? Second – Logistics, Planning and Vendor Coordination Our office has a detailed checklist for clients seeking outdoor venues. Maybe it was my previous career as a CPA, but we have a comprehensive form that will help you select an appropriate venue that will be audit proof when searching for your special event. Outdoor spaces are very tricky so you need to address the following and cost these out item by item:

Kerri Katz Named ORT President 2014

KATZ TO FOLLOW IN the footsteps of her mother and grandmother

T

he Southeast region of ORT America, which includes Atlanta and Charleston, recently named Kerri P. Katz as its new president for a twoyear term. Combining both American ORT (former men’s division) and Women’s American ORT, Katz will

Kerri Katz

serve behind nearly one hundred past presidents of this historical organization. Katz, age 51, became involved in ORT in 2010, in part to carry on her family’s tradition by following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother who were both ORT members. Katz, a Brooklyn, N.Y. native, believes her family’s commitment was due to the fact that “ORT is a vibrant, active organization that has modernized education. I want to continue that unique heritage,” says Katz. As a longtime advocate of education, being nominated as President of ORT is especially meaningful to Katz. With a Bachelors of Arts degree in English from Emory University, Katz taught at the Epstein School in Sandy Springs for a number of years. “I am making it my mission to ‘get

the word out’ about what ORT has accomplished. It is important that the Jewish community knows how much good ORT does. I’d like to see more people get involved,” Katz continues. Katz has always been a volunteer. Since the birth of her children, Jordan, a recent graduate of University of Michigan and Talia, a rising senior at The Weber School, she was involved for years at the Epstein School. As avid supporters of Israel, she and her husband, Erez, CEO of Lucena Research, an investment research technology firm, have also been longtime supporters of AIPAC (AmericanIsraeli Public Affairs Committee), most recently co-chairing their 2012 Community Event. They are also active in their synagogue, Congregation Beth Shalom in Dunwoody. In 2012, Katz Chaired ORT’s online auction, ORTbay, to help with fundraising for ORT’s many worldwide projects and programs. Now in its third year, ORTbay will be held from Dec., 1- 7, auctioning off a wide array of interesting items such a sports tickets, jewelry, vacation packages, gift certificates to renowned Atlanta restaurants, artisan’s crafts and collectible art, massage gift certificates and more -- enabling ORT to raise more than $30,000 in total thus far. About ORT As the largest non-governmental, education organization worldwide, ORT educates students with technological training and rehabilitation programs. With a presence in over 56 countries and spanning five continents, ORT educates more students than any other not-for-profit educational organization. ORT schools in the U.S. alone boast an 80 percent success rate at placing graduates in careers within their field of study. ORT began in Europe in 1880 and has grown to be the global organization it is today. Over 300,000 stu-

dents are educated by ORT each year and there are over 3 million ORT graduates to date. An ORT education is in demand because it makes an immediate and enriching impact on the lives of children, their teachers and the local communities. ”ORT originally stood for a long Russian phrase, which translates literally to ‘Society for Trades and Agricultural Labor,’ but in the 1950’s, the American acronym became known as ‘Organization for Rehabilitation through Training.’ No matter what you call it, -- simply put, ORT is oppORTunity,” says Jenna Shulman, Region Director of ORT Atlanta. The Exercise Coach provides Results You Can See WITH BUSY SCHEDULES, THE EXERCISE COACH FITS IN SPECIAL FOR THE AJT

amount of effort you put into each rep.

ichal Bonell, of The Atlanta Jewish Times, has been working out with The Exercise Coach-Buckhead since March. We wanted her to experience what we have to offer firsthand and report back to the readers of The Atlanta Jewish times with real results and feedback. Results are very important in all aspects of life especially when dealing with one’s body and health. Our trainers at The Exercise Coach® take the clients individual fitness goals very seriously and will positively help you achieve those goals through our proven program. Michal was more than willing to share her thoughts and feeling about her time with The Exercise Coach.

EC: What roadblocks in the past have prevented you from working out?

Exercise Coach: You’ve been working out since mid-March what changes have you seen or felt? Michal Bonell: My goals were toning my arms and legs and getting stronger. In less than two months I can see the difference in my arms and legs, which makes me more comfortable wearing summer clothes like shorts and sleeveless tops. Just knowing that I am putting the time and effort into staying in shape makes me feel motivated and seeing a difference keeps me encouraged. EC: What makes working out at The Exercise Coach different from other fitness facilities? MB: The Exercise Coach has a boutique feel, with personal attention. I know all of the trainers and they know me, which makes me feel comfortable. Each trainer is professional. They push me but don’t over-exert me. On my strong days they encourage me to push my limits and on my down days they challenge my strength but never make me feel as though I disappointed them by not skyrocketing. It is a pleasant atmosphere. Never too crowded and always tidy. Besides all of the above…you can’t beat the 20 minute workout! EC: 20 minutes seems too good to be true, is it really just a 20 minute workout?! MB: It’s hard to believe that you can see a difference in just 20 minutes but yes, it’s only 20 minutes. I was skeptical about seeing a difference in that short time span but it’s been less than two months and I can see the muscles in my arms and legs! It’s a short rep in each machine but it keeps you pushing your muscles from start to finish. Though short, you can feel the strain after each exercise depending on the

MB: Time, mostly. I work full time and I have two teenagers who are involved in every sport ever created. Between work, practices, and games and somewhat of a social life there is little time for myself. I have always liked to exercise and stay in shape but found that I did not have the hour or more to put into a class at the gym or a run and as time passed I lost the urge to keep at it. The Exercise Coach allows me to get my workout done on my lunch hour or between appointments so that I can keep up with my other responsibilities. EC: Why do you think it is hard for most people to keep up with a consistent exercise routine? MB: Use it or lose it. Once you step out of the routine it’s hard to get back into it. Various factors can get us off track: Time management, illness, injuries, confidence and more… What’s important is to understand that we all have to take care of ourselves and exercise is a key element. Muscle loss comes with age. At 42, I am concerned about bone density, osteoporosis, and other problems that muscle strengthening can help with and until I can add more hours to each day, The Exercise Coach’s program works for me. Michal isn’t the only one with these proven results. Visit any one of the several locations across the country and you will find much enthusiasm when it comes to the fitness results they are achieving. We guarantee this works. Our team of certified personal trainers at The Exercise Coach will guide you through each step of the process, beginning with our free initial consultation. Our coaches will provide encouraging accountability, and will customize your workouts to meet your individual needs. For more than a decade, we have helped people achieve the results that matter most to them. Our scientifically-based strategies fit even the busiest of lifestyles, just ask Michal! We’d love to help you meet your fitness goals starting today. Contact one of two metro locations to get your complimentary consultation and free promo sessions. Not Your Bubbe’s Kind of Mensch

Shep Gordon redefines the term AJT contributor

I

haven’t been inspired to write lately, but that all changed last Tuesday upon screening “Supermensch.” Shep Gordon is my new hero. Arguably the first super manager and live music producer, he pioneered the industry through a series of perchance events like it was busheret meant to be. We were a few minutes late due to rain and ATL traffic so we walked into the story where Shep gets punched in the face for trying to help what he thought was a poor helpless woman being raped in the pool courtyard of the Landmark hotel on his first night in LA. Turns out he interrupted Janis Joplin having sex. The story continues with Joplin feeling so bad about the encounter she apologizes the next day and in return introduces him to Jimi Hendrix - who in few words, changes his life forever. “He said, ‘You Jewish?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ And he said, ‘You should be a manager,” recalls Gordon. “So I became a manager. You can’t argue with Jimi Hendrix.” And by manager, they really meant drug dealer. Jimi introduced Shep to The Chamber Brothers who in turn intro’d him to a new Phoenix band on the scene looking for a manager called Alice Cooper. Although it began as a whirlwind of drugs and debauchery it quickly became serious when the money started to run dry and it was up to Shep to find a way to keep everyone clothed and fed. As part of my teachings in the Live Music Method and performance coaching, we instill in artists that who you are is more important than what you do. There are hundreds of guitar players, only one Hendrix, Page or Beck and they are all equally as talented but stylistically worlds apart. And that’s exactly how Shep launched Alice’s career. By egging them on to take their flamboyant avant garde performance to new heights and fueled the hype machine with gonzo publicity tactics like calling the cops on his own show for indecent exposure and causing a four hour traffic jam in Piccadilly circus to sell out Cooper’s UK debut. So how does being a drug-infused ladies man and rock n’ roll insider qualify Shep as being worthy of the title? Regardless if you agreed upon his lifestyle, his actions are what set him to the highest standard of being a mensch. A true loyal friend, Shep speaks highly of everyone, conducts what he calls compassionate business - another term for win/win - always honoring his word and paying his debts. In fact, Shep went

back and paid each hotel in full for every bad check they wrote during the early Alice touring days. I’d say if five people outside of someone’s immediate family speaks highly of them, they are a mensch. When Michael Douglas, Emeril Lagasse, Mike Meyers, Willie Nelson, Anne Murray, Sylvester Stallone and more vouch for your mensch-ness, you are a hall-of-famer. Shep is like the real-world, cool version of Forrest Gump, he has lived more lives than humanly possible. Not only did he tour the world living the rock star lifestyle, present for moments like the Almost Famous plane crash scare. He started a film company to help a friend out of work producing such horror classics as “The People under the Stairs.” He invented the concept of the celebrity chef to help his culinary friends get the respect and monetary compensation they deserve, subsequently creating a billon dollar industry with no aspects of profiting from the endeavor. He adopted the grandchildren of a past lover who lost their entire family, cooked breakfast for the Dala Lama, shared a cat with Cary Grant, dated Sharon Stone and had an open door policy for any friend or acquaintance in need of help, inspiring Mike Meyers to make this movie during his two month stay on Shep’s Maui estate. The title is starting to fit. It seems Shep even defied death surviving a four day intestinal surgery that flatlined him on the table. Anyone looking to get me a gift, buy this DVD, watch it first and then send it to me - I need to add it to my stash of personal development tools I should be frequently reviewing to make myself a better person like the Abraham Hicks law of Attraction dissertation (get URL from Bram) and my Dale Carnegie collection. In fact, I am going to start a mensch hall of fame with the second inductee being Hilly Kristal, founder of CBGB - also a must see biopic. Criteria for nominations? Simple, worthy inductees must be Jewish, human and willing to put others before themselves. Send me your nominations. Bram Bessoff is a drummer and musician. When not onstage, Bram is a performance coach and music industry entrepreneur helping artists get the most out of their live shows and chart on Billboard. He sits on the board of directors as VP for The Atlanta Jewish Music Festival. Follow Bram’s experiences on, off and backstage @bram_rocks. Etz Chaim Men’s Club and Jewish Family & Career Services is cosponsoring a weekly job networking session meeting Mondays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Etz Chaim Synagogue, located at 1190 Indian Hills Pkwy, Marietta, GA 30068. Men and Women are welcome. The program is open to the community. Last winter, Arvin Goldberg, Career Director at JF&CS met with Etz Chaim Men’s Club leadership to develop an “entry-level” program for those who are considering or are in

the midst of a career change or job search. The goal of the program was to reach out to those with similar concerns; mid-career change, not yet ready for retirement, stay-at-home moms or dads getting back in to a full-time career, etc…who did not know where to turn for support on job searching skills. Most importantly, Etz Chaim Men’s Club wanted to expand its mission of being part of a Caring Community, “Gemillut Chessed,” and provide a forum for our community to share in a “more or less” peer counseling support group. We wanted to let our community know they were not alone in this quest. If a participant wants to dive deeper into counseling on an individual basis, the resources of JF&CS are open for that next level of support on an “as-needed” basis.

Etz Chaim Men’s Club and community members who participated in the planning for this event include: Henry Levine (Committee Chair), Daniel Pransky, Jeff Frankel, Jay Givarz, Marty Friedman, Mark Hersh, Marvin Shams, Al Shams and Marc Wallenstein. Bob Bachrach, Executive Director of Congregation Etz Chaim, was instrumental in assisting with facility support for the program.

Wendy Siegel, Career Sourcing Specialist of JF&CS presents on Mon., June 09, 2014 JF&CS provides the weekly facilitator.

Each week a different topic will be offered. The purpose of this group is to act as a weekly kickoff for job seekers and those needing support in career change. All are welcome.

The Mindful Caregiver

Keeping Your Loved One at Home WHEN IS IT TIME TO INTERVENE?

AJT CONTRIBUTOR

I

am sure that many caregivers have heard, “I would rather be dead than move out of my home.” So how do you determine whether your love d one can remain at home? Be mindful of the following issues: How old is your loved one? Most geriatric professionals advise caregivers to consider age when weighing the pros and cons of keeping your elder loved one at home. Generally speaking, when elders pass the age of 75, their health can change on a dime. They are more likely to be diagnosed with a major illness, have a serious fall, experience complications from surgery, develop memory issues, or be challenged by hearing and sight. I can’t tell you how many times I have had clients experience a rapid change. Their elder family member, who was managing well at home and active in her community, had a fall, which triggered hospitalization, followed by rehab care. This then led to the serious exploration of whether or not the elder could move safely back home. Can Your Loved One Care for Himself? It is important to assess a person’s ability to take care of oneself, or what professionals call “activities of daily living” or ADLs. ADL’s are the day to day personal tasks, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, cooking, eating and toileting. For elders to remain in their homes, ask the following. • Is your elder effectively managing his health on his own? Can he properly take care of his ADL’s, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and eating? Poor hygiene can lead to urinary tract infections, skin breakdown and pressure sores. Inadequate nutrition and hydration can cause a host of medical problems, including kidney infections, confusion, depression,

fainting and falling. • Is your loved one going to doctors as needed? Is she going more frequently because she is experiencing problems from not taking proper medical care of herself? Or, do you have the opposite situation, in which he refuses to go to the doctor? Both of these scenarios may indicate that additional help is needed. • Is your loved frequently frequently ending up in the ER? More often than not, an elder who is not properly following medical directions will end up in the ER time and time again. If you are seeing this pattern, it is time to intervene and make sure your loved one has the medical and social support he needs. • Does your loved one still have good cognitive functioning? Even intermittent memory issues can impact the safety and health of your elder loved one. This can include forgetting to take medications, leaving the stove burner on, or innocently letting a stranger into the home. • Can your loved one take care of his home? Consider the consequences if the house is maintained. I’ve seen elders who have haven’t repaired their air conditioning and aren’t sure how to go about getting it done. If you are going to keep your elder at home, is there someone to monitor the situation? And are there resources to pay for help? And if so, will he even allow someone else to help? If not, how will this affect his health and living situation? If you answered no to any of these questions, a red flag should pop up. You need to be thinking about home care, other services, or alternative living options. Is the Home Safe? Safety is paramount when considering how long your loved one can remain at home. First you must evaluate whether the home is elderly-friendly. Are there safety hazards

inside the home that could present danger? This includes throw rugs or clutter that could pose a trip hazard, a bedroom that requires too many steps to access, or a bathroom that doesn’t have a walk-in shower. Don’t forget to access the outside of the house. This can include the steps that lead into the house or uneven pavement leading to the mailbox. Fixing these common situations can be costly in time and money. Will Your Loved One be Home Alone? It’s been my experience that caregivers tend to underestimate the importance of activities and social engagement when keeping their loved one at home. If your loved one is going to remain at home, ask yourself how much interaction she will have with others? Are you or others able to visit regularly? If not, it can be easy for an elder to become isolated. This

can lead to poor nutrition, decreased mobility and depression. And elders have a tendency to not admit that they are lonely or bored. Caregiver Needs Last, but not least, have you factored in your own health and well-being? Too often caregivers take on the responsibility of keeping their loved one at home and do so at their own expense. Mindful caregivers have to carefully review all the pros and cons and realistically look at the whole picture. Please send your questions, ideas and topics of concern to this paper. I will do my best to respond to the most common questions and issues posed.
