Letters to the editor PUBLISHER

Dear Editor:

our recent article stating that this merger is the first of its kind in Atlanta from preschool through high school is an incorrect statement. In fact the Epstein School, when it originally began at AA Synagogue, began as the same type of the school from preschool through high school. In fact, seven of us including myself graduated from The Epstein School with high school diplomas in 1976. Just wanted to clarify that, even though this a great merger, it was not the first attempt at a full grade school from preschool until high school graduation. Kindest Regards, Bruce I. Reisman

KING AND ARUN GANDHI

BY AL SHAMS AJT CONTRIBUTOR

S

everal weeks ago, BrightHouse held its second annual Global Purpose Summit at the Cobb Energy Center. The program featured special guest speakers Dr. Bernice King and Arun Gandhi. More than 150 attendees were present and the corporate sponsors included, The Coca –Cola Company, The Boston Consulting Group, Newell Rubbermaid, SunTrust Bank, Sapient Nitro, Hawkins Law Firm, American Standard, 22squared and the Little PINK Book. Readers may recall that the May 17, 2013 issue of the AJT featured a personal profile of Joey Reiman, CEO and Founder of Atlanta based BrightHouse. Reiman has a unique personal and professional background. Born in New York he attended Brandeis University and in 1974 he accepted an internship with Frederico Fellini. During that memorable summer, he was involved in a horrific auto accident, in which his arm was almost severed, partially paralyzed and with many broken bones.

life, not just improve their image. Maybe he could help companies work to improve lives while also serving the interest of shareholders. BrightHouse was formed with the goal of bringing Purpose to business; a company whose mission is to bring greater Purpose to the business world. BrightHouse is the world’s first ideation company – they create ideas, methodologies and frameworks that have been adopted by the world’s most prestigious organizations including Procter & Gamble and McDonald’s. The Concept of Purpose Purpose is your organization’s distinct reason for being, and the positive impact you seek to make in the world. The soul of an organization and its Purpose lies at its origins. Purpose illuminates everything in its path and defines and drives all organizational activity – innovation, communications, programs, mergers, acquisitions, HR measurement, recruiting and training.

In these desperate circumstances, about the only thing he could do was think, and think he did.

Purpose aligns all stakeholders, operations and ideals. We know Purpose driven business outperform the S&P 500; corporate Purpose is also a powerful tool for effecting both top and bottom line growth.

While he was in the hospital, he was visited by a South African minister who introduced him to the power of ideas. Using this insight, he began to change his thinking. He believed then (as he does today), that if you can change your thoughts you can change your life.

Purpose empowers you to make a difference in people’s lives. It creates commercial success through social value Purpose is why you get up in the morning. It’s why you sleep well at night. Conference Goals

Each day, lying in bed, he would begin a process of actively visualizing his thumb moving. He put all of his energy and thought into this process. He believed that if he could eventually move his thumb, he could move other parts of his body.

One of the goals was to show how, on a practical basis, companies can incorporate Purpose into their daily operations.

Those months in the hospital were transforming for Reiman. He came to realize that the human body, mind and spirit have tremendous power to recuperate. Today he has full use of that arm and is in good physical condition. A miracle occurred. From this tragic event, he learned the following lessons that have guided his life since: You are what you think; as you think, so you are; The human mind has the power to envision and create amazing things and great wonders; Each person has tremendous latent power in their mind. After recovering, he returned to New York and began a very successful advertising career in New York, and later in Atlanta. In the late 1980s, the agency was sold and Reiman had time to ponder his next adventure. He wondered what the world would be like if companies sought to improve public

Cynthia Good, CEO of the Little PINK Book, mentioned how woman are assuming more important roles in corporate life and how their efforts are leading to more meaningful, satisfying and creative work places. Cynthia led the panel discussion that discussed how some companies apply Purpose in their business life. Among some of the initiatives mentioned were: • General Mills seeks to build trust among consumers by providing nutritious, wholesome foods. • Mopar, the parts division of Chrysler seeks to enhance the motorist’s experience while getting his car serviced. This is accomplished by educating service people on the customer’s concerns and needs. • SunTrust seeks to restore the public’s trust in the bank by offering financial products appropriate to the customer’s needs. • KPMG seeks to show their em-

business

ployees how the accounting and consulting business can lead to a creative and satisfying career.

Reiman’s Comments Reiman addressed to the group and delivered his thoughts in a series of concise, direct quotes; some of which were: • Purpose is why we strive and why we sleep well at night. • Purpose creates an alignment where each party to a transaction benefits. • The fruits of your efforts will be found by embracing the roots of your organization. • Humans, whatever their endeavor, must find meaning in their daily efforts. • New Corporate titles: COO – Chief Opportunity Officer and CEO – Chief Energy Officer • Church and Government have sought to address society’s ills with mixed results. Corporations can be more flexible and creative; hence they should be more successful. People spend most of their working hours in the business world so they have more opportunities to incorporate Purpose into action. • Incorporate Purpose into your daily life and live these values.

lieves that we, in an affluent society, should be sensitive to those less fortunate. The affluent part of society can not live securely while many live in poverty. He thinks we should all strive to be of value, not just successful. We should step outside of our comfort zone. Gandhi listed and discussed eight social ills; these are thoughts upon which we can all reflect; • Wealth without Work • Pleasure without Conscience • Knowledge without Character

She is a frequent speaker and writer for personal growth and empowerment and is an active member of the M. L. King Center. Bernice King listed and discussed seven principals for a non-violent world: 1. Have the courage to make the tough decisions 2. Teach others a better way, violence begets more violence

• Commerce without Morality • Science without Humanity • Worship without Sacrifice

3. Seek to build friendship and understanding

• Politics without Principles • Rights without Responsibilities Dr, Bernice King, is the youngest child, of Nobel Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; she was 6-years-old at the time of her father’s assassination. Growing up in Atlanta under the shadow of her parent’s image, she had to strive to find her own path as a young woman. She has deep respect, admiration, and love for her family’s efforts to improve the lives of those less fortunate and how their efforts have changed the world for good.

4. Seek to defeat injustice, not people 5. Unearned suffering can be redeeming 6. Love instead of hate 7. The universe is on the side of justice Two additional quotes by Bernice that made a big impression on me were: “We can live together as brothers and sisters or perish as fools” and “People with Purpose are healthier than those without Purpose.”

The thoughts expressed in this Global Summit have much for us to learn and digest. Those seeking more information on the above topics should visit the below listed websites: www.arungandhi.org, www.thekingcenter.org, www.thinkbrighthouse.com www.joeyreiman.com, and www.dailyjoey.com Al Shams is a Sandy Springs resident a former CPA and an Investment professional with more than 36 years industry experience.

• People want more than a job. They want to be part of a team, a movement, something bigger than themselves. • Ideation – to consciously think about your actions as you go through the day. • Famillionaire - A term created by Reiman to describe a person rich in family, friendships and human values. • As intellectual capital becomes more important that concrete capital, the world will experience dramatic changes • A person’s net worth is a result of his self worth. • Corporations with social Purpose can be profitable as well as accomplishing meaningful qualitative improvements in the lives of people. Research shows that companies that embody Purpose in their DNA are more profitable, are enjoyable places to work and are typically leaders in their industries. Doing good is rewarding.

We all envision the delicate balance of keeping an unspoiled child star on the right path for a healthy, if not normal, adulthood. In our lifetime, there is yet another (Jewish) boy with the unfathomable gift of music (and charisma) in his soul. Coming to Atlanta on Sunday, April 13, 2 p.m., to the old Roxy (Buckhead Theatre), the “in culture crowd” will thrill to Ethan Bortnick’s piano virtuosity, stage presence, and witness the spontaneity of composing “on the spot.” The 13-year-old Ethan Bortnick has moved audiences nationally and internationally as a pianist, composer, singer, entertainer, and a driven humanitarian, dedicated to combining his musical pursuits with his charity work.

He has toured the world, connecting with diverse audiences in countries like South Africa, Brazil, Canada and Australia. In 2011, he made history as the youngest entertainer to headline a show in Las Vegas. He has also earned the distinction of being named the youngest musician to be endorsed by a premier instrument manufacturer through his Gibson Guitar/Baldwin Piano sponsorship. His musical director is Dave Rosenthal, whom he shares with

Ethan in concert Billy Joel, the “Piano Man” himself. Ticketmaster reported a 100 percent positive feedback rating from concert attendees. Growing Up “Tickling the Ivories” At the age of 3, the Hollywood, Fla., native begged his parents for piano lessons and discovered an uncanny ability to hear a song once and play it back note for note – the musical equivalent of a photographic memory. The piano whiz does not come from a musical family. He began picking out melodies with one finger on an eight-note children’s keyboard. He soaked up the music of such diverse artists and composers as Beethoven, Mozart, jazz pianist Bill Evans, Little Richard, and Elton John, and began writing original compositions at age 5.

AJT One fan commented, “It’s hard to believe he is a child. His tiny fingers dance on the keyboard. After a minute on stage, it’s like watching a small adult.” Tikun Olam - The Heart To Give Back When Bortnick was 5, his younger brother (now 8 and healthy) had three heart surgeries. That emotional time eventually inspired him to use his musical talents to benefit charity. “I remember going to Miami Children’s Hospital and seeing a lot of sick children. I learned that some of these kids could not afford surgery so the hospital raised money for them. It made me want to help these kids,” Ethan explains. Bortnick has helped to raise over $30,000,000 for nonprofits around the world. At charity events he’s shared the stage with such legends as Elton John, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, Beyoncé, and Reba McEntire,. In 2010 he joined some of music’s biggest names – including Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, the Black Eyed Peas, Justin Bieber, and Tony Bennett as the youngest of the allstar lineup that recorded “We Are The World 25 For Haiti.” For a Parkinson’s Disease fundraiser, he wrote a song, “The Champ” which was performed for Mohammed Ali, who embraced him on stage.

cluding multiple appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America and Oprah, where he was named one of Oprah’s All Time Smartest, Most Talented Kids! In 2010, Ethan made history as the youngest musician to create and host his own award-winning, nationally-televised concert special on PBS, which aired over 600 times on Public Television stations nationwide.

Bortnick completed shooting a full-length feature film called “Anything Is Possible” which was released in September 2013 to rave reviews. He co-wrote all of the songs in the film and scored all the background music; a soundtrack was released simultaneously. He starred as Nathan, the main character, and the touching plot reflected Bortnick’s sense of optimism and commitment to bring warmth and happiness to kids and families worldwide. It’s a fitting storyline for a boy who is on an epic music-career journey, but remains pure and humble when sharing his talents. (“Humble” is an operative word; because that’s what he told Oprah he strives to be.)

Bortnick has been featured on many national television shows, in-

Jaffe’s Jewish Jive

Up Close, One-on-One with Ethan Marcia Jaffe: So Ethan, you’re coming to Atlanta...what do you know about Atlanta? Ethan Bortnick: I’ve played in Atlanta several times. I understand “yawl.” I am super excited to be back there in April.

MJ: What’s your day like? How do you “keep it normal?” EB: I go to Jewish Day School. It’s small so my teachers can keep up with me. On the road, we Skype. I really like a variety of subjects and can’t be pigeonholed as a math/science guy vs. an English “type.”

I spend a lot of time doing fun things to keep balanced. I play video games, read – I like sports (with my 8-yearold brother). I also like to draw. I have to be careful not to damage my fingers! I eat and breathe like everyone else. I do need a lot of sleep. Bedtime is 9:30.

MJ: You said to Oprah that you were “humble;” what do your parents do to keep you grounded?

Ethan with Celine Dione

EB: Believe me, I don’t consider myself to be “the best.” Not the best performer, not the best musician. Lots of people are better than me. And people don’t like braggarts. I still have a lot to learn.

Ethan with Elton John

MJ: What is your next great goal? Carnegie Hall? Lincoln Center? EB: Actually I have played at Lincoln Center already. The truth is I don’t plan far out, I like spontaneity. I do

whatever happens; and that’s why my concerts flow with how the audience reacts.

MJ: I see you donate to Chabad? Is that where you belong? EB: Yes, I go to the Hollywood Chabad, and have given concerts to help them fundraise.

EB: Yes and no, my bar mitzvah was intimate and heartfelt; family came from all over-even Israel to celebrate.

MJ: Your gift of music, do you think you have the ability to teach? Are you able to express what you hear / feel to help others learn? EB: Of course there are traditional teaching methods, scales and stuff. It’s hard to teach someone prefect pitch or to have a good ear. I tried instructing my brother and it didn’t work out so well.

MJ: If you could spend an evening with a famous person, who would it be? EB: That’s a hard one. We all have special talents. Some share and can

MJ: I once heard a famous maestro say he dreams in music. Have you ever experienced this? EB: Yes, sometimes I compose in my sleep or subconsciously.

MJ: Have you ever had a crazy unplanned moment on stage? EB: Yes, many. In Ohio, the power went off. I made it a more intimate experience and played piano normally and just sang louder. Another time, a drunk started yelling that he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, so I played a love song for him and went with the flow. Sometimes people join me on stage and faint. That is not so much fun.

The Perfect Venue:

TIPS FROM THE PROS FOR SELECTING YOUR NEXT EVENT SETTING

SPECIAL FOR THE AJT

A

ll celebrations at their core are similar; to share joy with others. The difference between a good event and a great event however, begins at the foundation of the planning process. Before you move forward with any other event preparations, first you must determine where you will place your confidence and trust by selecting a venue. While the reasons to host events are intrinsically the same, each celebration is unique and deserves to be treated as such. The event coordina-

tion should be seamless, stylish and stress-free. To accomplish this, here are the key elements that when combined will create an event that perfectly suits your occasion: Flexible Event Space Event space that can be tailored to your needs offers the ability to customize the experience. This ability to transition, move, and be fluid lets you accommodate logistical needs and creative desires. When considering the event space, make sure the venue meets your unique criteria. Evaluate whether or not it will accommodate your production, entertainment, A/V, sound and other technical needs. With more than 10,000 square feet of event space including 10 flexible, state-of-the-art banquet rooms, Le Méridien Atlanta Perimeter knows how to deliver the perfect event layout.

When creating a menu, the freshest seasonal ingredients and highest quality products should be mandatory. The passionate team at Portico Global Cuisine, led by Executive Chef Brian Lee, offers just that to create inventive, globally inspired dishes. A contemporary twist to favorites and the ability to collaborate on themes is the mark of a perfect catering partner. Overnight Accommodations The happiness you receive from hosting an event often stems from the joy of being surrounded by your favorite people, such as friends and family. To make this possible, an ideal venue should have overnight accommodation capabilities, especially for out-of-town guests. The option to gather the most important people in your life is a determining factor in transforming an event from good to great.

In Dunwoody, there is space to do just that. Waking up in the only double king suites in all of Georgia at Le Méridien Atlanta Perimeter ensures well-rested guests inspired to commence their journey of discovery. Location

Giving a piece of Judaica such as a menorah or a Seder plate is a gift that the couple can use for many years to come and something they will definitely enjoy, which you can find at your local Judaica store (i.e. Judaic Gallery in Toco Hills, synagogue gift shops and Modern Tribe are all great examples) and many department stores as well. If you are going to take this route, remember that the key is knowing whether the couple’s style is more modern, more traditional or even possibly ornate. Another gift is a wine of the month club. The newlyweds can continue the celebration for many more months! Giving a personalized piece of art celebrating the couple’s big day will be the type of gift that they will have forever. One of my favorite gifts for groomsmen is personalized grand pilsner glass – cheers! Swoozies, a great gift store with two Georgia locations, sells the glasses in sets of four. Another clever idea is getting a gift certificate for BESPOKEPOST (www.bespokepost.com). With this certificate, your groomsmen can choose a wide range of men’s lifestyle accessories. One route is getting a symbolic piece of jewelry, such as a Star of David or Chai. Another special gift is to get the invitation framed so they will always remember their day. Having a tree planted in Israel in the child’s name is another suggestion, as is buying shares of stocks for the child so that they can watch them grow. Recipe for the Best Party You’ll Ever Have AS EASY AS 1,2,3: MUSIC MAKES A PARTY ROCK! BY JASON KAGAN SPECIAL FOR THE AJT

W

hat is the recipe for the best party you’ll ever have? Most would say the main ingredients are good food, great music, and a warm sense of love from family and friends. Every ingredient is equally important, and attention to detail is paramount. So what of the music? What is its role, and how do I know what to play at my party? Music is the only constant and the biggest variable. We eat for only a small portion of the night, and when we dim the lights to dance, the decorations fade away into the ambiance. Music is the heartbeat. The pulse. The energy, the flow and the life force of every party.

march 28 ▪ 2014

Music tells the story of your party from beginning to end. It takes your

16

crowd on a magic carpet ride and drops you off safely on the ground at the end of the night. As you begin the journey of planning your awesome simcha, here are a few things to keep in mind while thinking about the music at your party: 1. What’s your favorite music? You’re going to have the most fun when you’re listening to the music you love. Giving a DJ a few song requests is the most direct way for him to find out what you love. You’re literally telling him what you want to hear. Any good DJ’s brain is like Pandora - every song request triggers ideas of other songs you might also love to hear. Whether or not your favorite style of music is the same as everyone else’s, it’s up to the magic

The K razy Boyz - DJ entertainment of the DJ to mix it all up and have people experience music differently. 2. The generation gap. What is the average age of your crowd? Ten years ago, adult requests would include the motown and 70s classics, while the children only wanted to hear that day’s most popular mainstream pop and hip hop tunes. Today, the children haven’t changed, but as we drive our kids around their daily activities, we all listen to and enjoy the same music. Top 40, mainstream and pop music genres are blending into a universally accepted genre of “dance music” that everyone can relate to on a dance floor. More and more, the kids are starting to appreciate the throwback songs, while the adults are also enjoying all of the party anthems of the new generation. As global music unites us as a dance floor, the generation gap is slowly starting to close and parents and children are grooving to the same tunes. 3. A party is a progressive, evolving mashup of music that tells a story of the night. “Remember when we saw great grandpa Freddie dancing with his oxygen tank to ‘bird is the word?’” Your party is a canvas with music painted onto it. Your crowd is an empty slate of dance energy who want to be dazzled and swept off of their feet and are just waiting for the right trigger. Sometimes it’s the line dances, sometimes it’s the sing-alongs, sometimes it’s as simple as the most current party anthem, and

sometimes it’s the perfect timing of when to play “Shout” or dance the hora. The magic is in the mix. Let’s take bar and bat mitzvahs for example. Some of our kids visit two and maybe three events a weekend. At 50+ events per season, they’re jaded, and even the most popular music can become less than exciting. Or does it? How many times have you made the comment that the song you love “is so overplayed on the radio” But when you hear it mixed in such a way that it takes you by surprise, it’s thrilling and exciting again, and you singalong as though it’s the first time you’ve ever heard it and somehow you know all of the words. Parties are inspired by love and passion. Knowing your crowd is important; and planning the right music is a big factor in grabbing their attention, captivating them, and taking them right where you want them. From the beginning to the end of your celebration, the energy of your crowd dictates the magnitude of a great party, and a carefully formulated playlist will manipulate and mold the energy of your crowd. Good music is not a lucky accident – it’s an art and a science – a carefully formulated plan of attack to maximize the full potential of every dance floor. Consider Renterpieces, decorative centerpieces and large bima-sized decorations you can rent for virtually any occasion. Available in three sizes, Renterpieces are made to order and can be customized to your event’s color scheme or other specifications. The best part about using Renterpieces to adorn your event setting is that the funds generated help support the JF&CS Kosher Food Pantry and other programs and services for those in need. Shelley Cooper knows this well, “I contracted with Renterpieces for all three of my childrens’ bar and bat Mitzvahs, years ago,” she said. “I decided to use them again last month for my son’s wedding rehearsal dinner and I am so glad I did. The second ice storm hit Atlanta just days before the wedding weekend. “Even though JF&CS was closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Betsy Brody, Renterpieces Coordinator, emailed to assure me that the Renterpieces would be delivered to the Buckhead Club on Friday as planned. When you contract with Renterpieces, not only do you feel good doing a mitzvah, but you feel good working with an agency of professionals who care about your event and, no matter the weather, will do the job!

“Besides the fact that the center-

pieces looked beautiful on the tables, surrounded by votive candles, our family felt happy that we could contribute to the community while celebrating such a joyous time in our lives.” Betsy was in Florida when this all happened. “We left town since we were convinced we’d lose power, so we drove down to Destin on Tuesday,” she said. “I was keeping in touch with the events, weather, my driver, office closures, etc., to make sure not only that Shelley’s were delivered, but the others for the five events that weekend were also delivered! We have a great team, and I always work ahead, getting orders done way in advance just in case something like this happens.” Beautiful Renterpieces, all made by JF&CS volunteers, will be on display this fall at the annual Bar Mitzvah Expo. Small Food Stations, Big-Fun Parties COMMENTS FROM THE KOSHER KING BY DAVID S. COVELL, AVENUE K PRESIDENT

the certified glatt kosher event division of the Saratoga Event Group. David also has a background as a Certified Public Accountant in New York State

SPECIAL FOR THE AJT

A

s special events continue to evolve in a variety of ways that include technology, lighting, colors, themes, entertainment and more, most of my clients still believe that “the food” is the most important component of the event.

As the kosher event scene continues to grow in Metro Atlanta, Avenue K, has recently been asked to produce several traditional kosher weddings that go untraditional when it comes time for meal service. The last three kosher weddings we produced focused on a variety of catered food stations, utilizing innovative station fare with a variety of creative options. Clients are wanting more interactive and guest-engaging stations to enhance both the culinary and the social aspect of their event. Part of making the event “all about the food” also means it has to be socially festive and exciting. While kosher weddings impart traditions that are thousands of years old, the catering component, while adhering to the strictest kosher standards, can merge into today’s creative culinary scene that has almost limitless opportunities to engage your guests while hosting a traditional kosher affair. Some of our new Chef Attended action stations include a Guacamole Bar, Asian Imperial Wok Station, Open Faced Ravioli Station, Slider Station (think fried green tomatoes with chipotle ranch sauce or angus beef with horseradish mayo and sliced pickle chips), Moo Shu Chicken Pancakes, Chef Attended Paella with assorted toppings and a Pasta Action Station.

Think cavatelli pasta with short ribs and a merlot sauce or rosemary chicken with tomato vodka sauce along with a choice of noodles – even gluten free pasta. Some clients have pictures from Pinterest or other online websites and ask us to “make that.” Most experienced full service caterers can usually meet the challenge. Additionally, stations can be dressed in different decor. Colors and lighting. Plus guests are encouraged to mix and mingle, possibly making some new friends and driving the event with a higher level of socialization. This is definitely more fun than just waiting for your entree to be served while you stare at the people sitting right next to you. Boring! A big trend is also the dessert buffet, which provides for a great way to end your event. Having a chef attended action item accompanied with an assortment of petit fours is all the rage. For example, we are making fresh lemon mousse parfaits, mini tiramisus and a variety of small bite desserts made fresh to order with pareve ingredients and an emphasis on presentation and quality. Remember, this is a lifetime celebration and should hopefully be a pleasurable and memorable experience. David S. Covell is the CEO of Saratoga Event Group and President of Avenue K-Glatt Kosher Events. GHA Players Return with ‘Alice in Wonderland Jr.’ STUDENTS TAKE THE REIGNS FOR NEW MUSICAL SPECIAL FOR THE AJT

he halls and auditorium are buzzing with activity as the GHA Players prepare for the presentation of their newest musical, “Alice in Wonderland Jr.,” on April 2, 3, and 6.

This musical version of Alice in Wonderland has been updated and modernized, so the cast warns viewers not to expect the Disney version of the story.

T

Preparations are widespread, as the production has a cast of 43 students. With the addition of the almost entirely student-based tech crew, there are approximately 50 students involved in “Alice in Wonderland Jr.”

march 28 ▪ 2014

“We make our productions a topto-bottom learning opportunity for our students,” said Taryn Carmona, GHA’s Director of Drama and Artistic Director. “Joel Coady, our Technical Director, and I train and supervise everyone, but we have students backstage, a student as stage manager, students doing light and sound cues—we even had student volun-

“The original books are a bit edgier than the Disney movie, and we returned to the feel of the Lewis Carroll books in our production—but with a modern twist,” said Ms. Carmona. Many of the cast members say that they prefer this version to the classic movie. The entire group also agrees that the feeling backstage is warm and supportive, and that they are all having fun. In fact, Jillian Gerson, the eighth grader playing Alice, said that her favorite part of the production has been hanging around backstage with the cast, which she says is like a family.

Fellow eighth grader Liana Slom-

ka, who plays the Queen of Hearts, also cited the opportunity to take a leadership role and the fun she’s had getting to know younger kids as an important part of the experience. “We have a large cast, and some of them are quite young—we have first graders in our chorus— so for lots of them, it’s their first time on stage,” said Ms. Carmona, “But our older kids are really rallying around the young ones, and they’ve worked hard to make them comfortable. The kids are very excited. Maybe a little nervous, but not worried.” Ari Slomka, a sixth grader claimed that “Alice in Wonderland Jr.” preserves all the best parts from “Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass.” Furthermore, he said that he’s been working very hard to prepare for his role as the White Rabbit.

“My character is always late, so

I’ve been trying to slow myself down. Sorry, teachers, I have to do it for my role,” he said, with a distinctly

Cheshire Cat sort of grin. Jillian added, “I hope everyone enjoys the show. And don’t be late, because we already have someone who’s doing that!” “Alice in Wonderland Jr.” will run Wednesday, April 2 at 4 p.m.; Thursday, April 3 at 7 p.m.; and Sunday,

April 6 at 3 p.m.. All performances will be at Greenfield Hebrew Academy Auditorium, 5200 Northland Dr., Sandy Springs. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students under 14, and are available at www.showtix4u. com. For more information, visit players.ghacademy.org or call (404) 843-9900.

More than120 adult, teen, and senior volunteers from different faith communities gathered together to make the fleece blankets on March 2 at Temple Emanu-El, a synagogue in Atlanta.

Many participants who made blankets came in groups to share the experience, including grandmothers with their grandchildren, and mothers, daughters, and daughters-inlaw, as well as teenagers who attended as part of a community service program through the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta.

One of the participants, Jo Thacker felt that, “The beauty was in the simplicity of the project, where anyone could do it because no experience was required.” Connie White, another participant added, “I was delighted I could do my part to make something with so much meaning.”

T

he Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) is introducing a new initiative for young adults aged 18-25 with mild to moderate autism, called Transitions. A free Transitions 4-week pilot program will be offered to the community, on Sundays April 27, May 4, May 11, and May 18, from 2 until 4 p.m., at the MJCCA. It will include volunteer, leisure, and cooking activities, physical fitness, and social skills activities. Transitions participants will have the opportunity to engage in social, educational, vocational, health and wellness, and leisure opportunities that foster personal growth and independence – all in a safe and supportive environment. Elizabeth Waddey, MJCCA’s Program Coordinator, Special Needs

explains, “Feedback that we have received has dictated that there is a need for programming for this age and population.”

Waddey continues, “We anticipate year-round programming, with programs offered two times per week. The group size will be kept small in order to provide full support and encouragement for each person.”

Transitions is under the auspices of the MJCCA’s Blonder Family Department for Special Needs. The MJCCA would like input from both families/caregivers and potential participants, so that they may best fill the needs of the participants and their families through the Transitions Program, For information, contact Elizabeth Waddey at (678) 812-4095, or elizabeth.waddey@atlantajcc.org.

Proud to Choose Judaism

AN AIRPORT INCIDENT BRINGS IDENTITY TO THE FOREFRONT By Eden Farber AJT contributor

T

here is absolutely nothing glamorous about donning tefillin in an airport.

Truth be told, there’s usually not much glamor in airports. I would know—I’m sitting in one. It’s eight in the morning and I’m sitting in Chicago O’Hare airport, computer on my lap and backpack at hand. Airports are full of overtired people, bustling around somewhat drearily, but generally all wearing the same anxious and excited expression. It’s a firm, strong look—no one likes to walk around an airport looking lost—but emotion is, understandably, in everyone’s eyes. Unless of course they’re staring at you as you don tefillin in the corner; in that case, it’s mostly a look of bewilderment. It was quite early, back in Atlanta, and I knew I had a big weekend ahead of me. It was too early to recite the morning prayers when I left the house, so I knew I was going to have to do it somewhere en route. I was a little hesitant to do such an obvious and strange practice in such a public place, and I didn’t want my religious practices to be a show for the rest of my plane-mates. Today, though, the universe was on my side, and I was randomly selected for TSA Pre-Check, which sped up my check-in process immensely, giving me plenty of time to find a quiet place to pray.

I found a relatively empty gate and slowly set aside my bags. I took out my siddur, prayer book, rolled up my left sleeve, and began to wrap my tefillin. Never have I been so selfconscious in my life. Yet, as the airport kept moving and I steadily proceeded with my

routine, I began to regain focus in my prayers. I thought about having a safe flight, being able to navigate the city, all my aspirations for the upcoming trip, how it’s amazing that the words I say every day can mean different things at different times, and before I knew it, I was done. I took off my tefillin, put away my siddur, and looked around. Other than the few obvious stares, I don’t know if my practice was even noticed—and I was glad. I don’t often represent Judaism in the eyes of strangers. I don’t dress the “religious woman uniform” and I don’t have any visible ritual markers (kippot or tzitzit, for example) on me.

My food doesn’t have a big, shiny label on it reading “Kosher” and I’m almost never in a place on the weekends where I have to explain my Shabbat practices. So today, one of my few experiences with looking the part, I felt a slight rise in my Jewish pride. Judaism is a religion; it has a system of beliefs and practices that go along. But it is much more than that—it is also a people. We are a culture and a nation. Being a part of that doesn’t mean being isolated from our other cultural influences. However, it enhances our culture, giving it ideological or ritualistic flavors. Today I learned the power of being an actively, noticeably and proudly Jewish woman. It doesn’t mean I am only Jewish to make a point; it doesn’t mean I’m going to make that my most prevalent external characteristic. No, it means that I’m not afraid to embrace my religiosity. There are times in everyone’s life when they have to decide what beyond themselves they represent. Today, I was proud to choose Judaism.

In September 2012, the camp was chosen to be part of the foundation’s specialty camp incubator program, designed to engage a new, underserved generation of Jewish campers. The Specialty Camp Incubator II, which considered 39 applications before selecting four, is part of an $8.6 million grant jointly funded by the Jim Joseph Foundation and AVI CHAI Foundation. he world famous Atlanta Boy Choir under the direction of its founder Fletcher Wolfe will visit the concentration camp in Theresienstadt, Czech Republic this June as part of their concert tour.

The choir, well-known for their performances of Charles Davidson’s “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” will perform this work in Prague’s great Tyn Cathedral. This work composed by Charles Davidson on the poems of young children imprisoned in this camp during the Second World War has been sung

by The Atlanta Boy Choir all over the world since its beginning 56 years ago. They even performed this piece in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda with the President and both houses of Congress in attendance. Maestro Wolfe, longtime Choir Director at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue in Atlanta, was joined by Can-

tor Goodfriend of Blessed Memory in presenting this piece on many occasions. The Atlanta Boy Choir boasts many young Jewish boys who have gone through its ranks. Some of them include Dr. Adrian Elfersy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacques Elfersy, Chris Neiman, Hollywood actor son of Nelson Neiman and grandson of Robert Ferst, Charles Elson, now a distinguished professor and son of Ambassador Edward Elson, Dale Dreyfoos, opera director at Arizona State University son of Jeanne Dreyfoos, and Amir Levi, now on Broadway and son of Maestro Yoel Levi. This is to mention only a few of the alumni who are too numerous to list here with their accomplishments. The choir was heard last season at The Temple and at the Breman Museum performing this piece. Several Georgia venues to hear this piece performed with the talented Atlanta actress Mira Hirsch narrating are listed on our website. This year the boy soloist performing the final prayer Sh’ma Yisrael is Bryce Zimmerman, son of Mr. Scott Zimmerman and Mrs. Cindy Zimmerman-Salzman.

Sanford Schwartz 91, Athens

Sanford “Sandy” Schwartz, 91, of Athens, Ga. (formerly of Winder) died Tuesday, March 18, peacefully at home. Sandy is survived by his wife of 72 years, Florence Casper Schwartz, and two sons, Dale (Susan) and Ron (Andree Kosak); daughter-in-law, Helene Schwartz; grandchildren, Lori (Allan) Peljovich, Leslye (Robert) Goldberg, Laine (Greg) Posel, Ryan Schwartz and Daryn Schwartz; and nine great-grandchildren. Sandy was born on Oct. 14, 1922 in The Bronx, N.Y. to the late Rose and Louis Schwartz. He is predeceased by his sister, Nora Schwartz Reiner. After graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School, Sandy went on to a successful business and civic career. He was owner of Peskin’s Department Store in Winder and Sanford and Son in Athens where he clothed generations of area families, including outfitting Herschel Walker in a custom-tailored tuxedo for his Heisman ceremony. He was also well known as the Maitre D’ at his son Ron’s restaurant, Trumps. Sandy was a true civic leader, holding positions with the Elks Club, Winder Rotary Club, Barrow County Democratic Party, Barrow County Chamber of Commerce, and Winder Library Board. He was also President of Congregation Children of Israel in Athens, where he was a member for almost 60 years. However, he was most proud of his work with the Barrow Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and the American Red Cross, where he volunteered countless hours helping many patients and families. Poppie Sandy was an incredible grandfather to his five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He taught them lessons of love for family and friends, staying in touch with those you care about, loyalty and standing up for your fellow man. His grandchildren fondly remember brightly colored blazers, typewritten letters, M&M’s, Lifesavers, big Cadillacs, the New York Yankees (and the Braves), pigtails, Dumbo stories, “gruzzies” and kisses on both cheeks. He will be missed by all who knew him. Contributions in memory of Sandy may be made to the Schwartz Symposium Fund at Congregation Children of Israel, 115 Dudley Drive, Athens, GA 30606. A memorial service was held on Thurs., March 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Congregation Children of Israel. Online condolences may be offered at www.bernsteinfuneralhome.com.
