CHAIR OF THE BOARD Rhys Wilson Ten years ago, The Atlanta Opera was, in the words of one critic, “a sleepy opera company that staged just three productions per year and barely had an imprint on the city.” Thus it was in 2012 that the Opera’s Board of Directors made the bold decision to change the company’s staff leadership. The risk was that the company would flounder and fail, but the Board decided it was worth the risk to achieve our vision of a great opera company for Atlanta. Our 2021-22 season was proof of the wisdom of that fateful decision, which led to Tomer Zvulun’s appointment as The Atlanta Opera’s Carl W. Knobloch General and Artistic Director. It was a stunning season with multiple highlights on the mainstage, on the Discoveries stages, in elementary school auditoriums, and on film and live streams. This Annual Report lays out these many highlights, and I encourage you to read it and marvel at this company’s accomplishments.
• In 2020, we created a joint staff/Board EDI Task Force and focused our Board and staff on the essential nature of EDI to our vision, mission, and values. • This season’s Discoveries series included the Come As You Are festival at Pullman Yards with performances of As One and Cabaret and featured community discussions of the critical issues facing our LGBTQIA+ communities. • We also saw the debut of the 96-Hour Opera Project, an annual competition that showcases diverse composers and librettists and their unique perspectives and voices. Each year, one of these creative teams will be given a commission by the Opera to create a new work that will be included in an upcoming season. • Our Community Engagement efforts are continuous and wide-ranging and connect us with a multitude of diverse communities in our city and our state.
As Board Chair, I am particularly proud of the strides we have made over the past three years in seeking equity, diversity and inclusion in every aspect of our beloved company:
Our goal for EDI is simple: to have all aspects of The Atlanta Opera reflect the incredible diversity of Atlanta. We hope that you will support us – and join us – in this journey.
• In 2019, we appointed a Board Committee on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
As you will see in this Annual Report, the Opera’s bold decision to continue producing full opera productions during the pandemic
4 • Chair of the Board
has brought us unprecedented recognition and financial support. We find this success especially gratifying because we did not seek or expect it – we kept producing opera during the pandemic simply because it was the right thing to do for all of our constituencies, including artists, community members, patrons and staff. The Board is using this success and strong financial base as a springboard to refresh and update the company’s Strategic Plan. We are looking at a number of strategic initiatives for the next ten years. Stay tuned for some very exciting developments! Ten years ago, The Atlanta Opera’s Board of Directors made the bold decision to chart a new course for the company that led to today’s success. With your continued support and encouragement – and more bold decisions – the next ten years should be even better!
Rhys Wilson
THE CARL W. KNOBLOCH, JR.
GENERAL & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Tomer Zvulun Writing my letter for the Annual Report always takes more time than I think it will. What should be a straightforward exercise in recapping a series of events prompts deeper reflection. Why did we do what we did? What did we change? What did it mean? Peeling back the layers of the 2021-22 season – the essence of what we delivered – I keep returning to the word courage. Many opera companies remained dark in November 2021. At The Atlanta Opera, we went back to the epidemiologists who advised our safety protocols for the Big Tent Series and asked how we could safely return to the theatre. We opened our season at the Cobb Performing Arts Center with the first Handel opera in the company’s history: Julius Caesar in a sensational coproduction with the Israeli Opera.
Steve Jobs, now planned for five other cities. The jewel in our crown arrived in June with our Come as You Are festival, an immersive concert experience at Pullman Yards. We transformed a deserted train depot into two distinct environments for productions of Cabaret and the chamber opera As One, both works of art that caution society from the perils of hate and intolerance. Come As You Are was an invitation that all are welcome regardless of race, gender identity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity -- a stance against hate.
Each performance was charged with a profound sense of gratitude and relief – of balance restored. It was good to be back.
The year ended at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center at Morehouse College with our 96-Hour Opera Project, a composition competition and showcase featuring teams of composers and librettists from historically underrepresented communities. Teams had four days to collaborate with singers and pianists to stage original 10-minute operas based on true stories of Georgia’s past for the final showcase.
The following comedies and crowd pleasers, The Pirates of Penzance and The Barber of Seville, provided much-needed laughter and refuge during turbulent waves of COVID. We closed our season with a daring, hightech co-production of The (R)evolution of
As the saying goes, “fortune favors the bold.” In 2021, we silently launched a $45 million-dollar comprehensive campaign. As of writing this letter, we are over $42 million toward our goal. We’ve also invested in our digital capabilities. The
future is digital; the future is immersive; the future is based on unparalleled experiences. We are harnessing technology and innovation, so we’re prepared to say “yes” to the future. We will be ready. Pausing to reflect is particularly poignant for me this year, as the current season is my 10th as the General and Artistic Director of The Atlanta Opera. The phrase “Find a job you love, and you never have to work a day in your life” comes to mind. If I had to choose one moment in the last decade as the most meaningful, it would be October 22, 2020. Two hundred audience members were watching Pagliacci under the Big Tent at Oglethorpe University. Remarkable because we were the only opera company in the world performing. We built it; you came. And we kept everyone safe. Courage requires inspiration, and that’s where you arrive on stage. The audience – donors, patrons, young, old – you are the reason we do this. Thank you for a great season. Thank you for your generosity. Thank you for a decade of your trust and encouragement.

“IT’S WONDERFUL TO SIT IN A THEATER AGAIN TO SEE ART LIVE. JUST THE ORCHESTRA WARMING UP FOR THE OVERTURE BROUGHT CHILLS. IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING FOR LIVE OPERA IN ATLANTA AGAIN. IT’S A TRIUMPH TO DO IT ALL AGAIN AS, HOPEFULLY, COVID FALLS BACK INTO OUR PAST.” – ARTSATL

8 • Come As You Are festival
The driving force behind the Come As You Are Festival was to create a sense of openness and welcome. As an art form, opera has changed and evolved over its 400-year history, and as we come out of the pandemic, The Atlanta Opera remains as committed as ever to innovating and bringing new experiences to Atlanta audiences. Our residency at Pullman Yards this June was part of the 10-year journey of the opera’s Discoveries series, which brings performances of contemporary opera to unexpected locations in neighborhoods throughout our region. Cabaret and As One are fantastic examples of contemporary theatrical works that address the ugliness of labeling people as “others.” As we gathered together at Pullman Yards to enjoy art together, we urged patrons to take exploration even further. The Atlanta Opera prooudly partnered with Out Front Theatre Company, Out on Film, and The Atlanta Pride Committee for a series of Community Programs in May and
June that celebratee gender expression and identity through art. We had fun at a screening of the 1972 Cabaret in May, and delved into meaningful discussions about art and queer identity at Out Front Theatre on May 17 (available online at stream. atlantaopera.org). On June 13, we screened the film The Sound of Identity, featuring Lucia Lucas, from As One. The filmmakers were in attendance, and we remain grateful to Out Front Theatre Company for being our host throughout the festival. Lucia Lucas played Hannah in The Atlanta Opera’s production of As One, and it will be the first time she has ever played a transgender character on stage. Lucia is a proud “heldenbaritonisten” and speaks openly of her journey as a transgender woman in opera.
And, it happened in Tulsa. Playing Don Giovanni, Lucia Lucas breaks archaic social barriers, making way for other trans opera performers. The New York Times says “... as her booming, powerful baritone ricocheted off the walls, Ms. Lucas, became the [Don Giovanni] character ...” The Guardian calls Ms. Lucas “a rising star” while the San Francisco Chronicle says while she “boasts a robust, flexible baritone ... these [the] roles open up new dramatic vistas.” Lucia will joined filmmaker James Kicklighter and Executive Producer Andy Kinslow for a talkback following the screening. Again hosted by Out Front Theatre, it was the third and final event in the Come As You Are series of events.
The Sound of Identity is a unique, history making, feature length documentary. It features the first ever transgender woman performing an opera lead in the U.S. with a professional company, in a standard work.

America’s longest-held prisoner of war dreams of coming home, but home is a place he will not recognize. Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied explores the gut-wrenching saga of Col. Jim Thompson as he transitions from the jungles of Southeast Asia to the once familiar tree-lined streets of suburban America. Based on interviews collected for the 2001 chronicle by Tom Philpott, the opera pays witness to one soldier’s journey, and to the war raging within the hearts and minds of countless returning veterans. Glory Denied was recorded at the Morgan Concert Hall, located within the Bailey Performance Center at the Bailey School of Music, Kennesaw State University, between June 13th and June 16th, 2021. This is the first recording of the work in its full orchestral version.

Over four days In June, six teams of BIPOC composers and librettists competed in The Atlanta Opera’s inaugural 96-Hour Opera Project: Stories that Resonate. Selected from over 72 applicants, finalists had 96 hours to produce entirely original and compelling 10-minute operas that represent the history of Georgia’s cultural diversity. Teams developed their work, each based on a true story, with assistance from local story partner organizations, which provided archival information and personal accounts to shape the historical narratives.
“With this effort, we are determined to tell stories of underrepresented and unheard voices. We know these are inspiring stories of hard-won struggles and everyday heroes that are too often untold.” Tomer Zvulun, Carl W. Knobloch Jr. General and Artistic Director The competition culminated in a final showcase at Morehouse College, hosted by the project’s Artistic Administrator and one of seven judges, Atlanta native and internationally renowned bass Morris Robinson.
Composer Marcus Norris and librettist Adamma Ebo produced the winning opera, Go On With the Wind. Set in 1939 and based on information supplied by their story partner, the Atlanta History Center, the work imagined the reactions of two members of the Morehouse College and Spelman College glee clubs invited to perform at an after-party for the premiere Gone With The Wind. The team received a $10,000 cash prize and future commission from The Atlanta Opera.

STUDENTS AT OUR SCHOOL WOULDN’T OTHERWISE BE EXPOSED TO AN OPERATIC PERFORMANCE. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU ARE DOING TO BRING THIS ENRICHING EXPERIENCE TO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS.” – ROSEMARY BLANKSON, MUSIC TEACHER, M. AGNES JONES ELEMENTARY
