WELCOME

s I start my second decade in a city that has become a beloved home for me and my family, it heartens me to celebrate with you that, in the Opera’s 45 th anniversary season, this thriving, major international city has the major international opera company that it deserves. This season, The Atlanta Opera joins, for the fi rst time, the top ten opera companies in America. So, what does that mean for us?

First, that The Atlanta Opera is now in the same league with companies in top cities of America: Seattle, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles. Second, this new status will attract even more top talent to The Atlanta Opera. has heartens with you that, in the Opera’s 45 talent to The Atlanta Opera.

Now more than ever, we can deepen our commitment to excellence and innovation on all levels: the best productions, singers, conductors, and designers are setting our new standard.

In this brochure, we share a spectacular 45th Anniversary season with you. This is a season for you, for your families, for those who want to escape from our sometimes-harsh reality into a world of fantasy and fairy tales. Here is The Magic Flute full of whimsy, puppetry, and comedy wrapped in a hero’s quest. Here is the most adventurous part of the RING cycle–our new production of Siegfried in collaboration with the Center of Puppetry Arts. For sheer fun, we’re planning to bring you two spectacular dragons in these operas!

From mythology, here is the story of Semele and her great love for Jupiter, a mortal who yearns for a god. And from the works of Shakespeare, we present Macbeth, the magnificent Verdi opera of the dark, anti-hero with an unquenchable lust for power.

The Boheme Project

we present Jonathan Larson’s Rent Reflecting the plot, characters, and even some of the music of Puccini’s La bohème, this Broadway blockbuster shows us the early tragedy of the HIV/AIDS crisis. We pair Rent with a production of La bohème set in 2020 and reflecting the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are excited about this journey. You have been an incredible part of it and the fun is just starting. Don’t miss a minute!

If you enjoyed our sold-out production of La bohème in January 2024, you’ll understand my drive to take this seminal story of love in a time of pandemic to another level. We are all changed by our battle against COVID-19, as past generations were changed by the pandemics of their time. In an immersive, audienceinclusive production at Pullman Yards,

ith a magic flute and bells, a prince and a bird-catcher set off to free a kidnapped princess. However, the path for the heroes is not smooth as friends become foes and enemies become allies in this comic opera with a star-studded cast. Santiago Ballerini (The Pirates of Penzance) returns to our stage as the hero Tamino with the gifted comic baritone Luke Sutliffe as Papageno. In her signature role, Rainelle Krause is the Queen of the Night, and Meigui Zhang (Don Giovanni) is featured as Pamina.

This hero’s journey must first penetrate deception and malice before facing the quest to conquer fear. Love and enlightenment are the rewards in this work. Mozart’s gorgeous music, whimsical characters, sorcerers, magical instruments, and delightful puppetry are layered over the theme of a hero’s journey in pursuit of wisdom and truth.

powerful and emotional work, Macbeth is the opera Giuseppe Verdi declared to be “unlike any other!” No love story here ... just a darkly riveting scramble to grab power at any cost. Dominating the drama, Michael Mayes as Macbeth and Sara Gartland as Lady Macbeth bring their passionate and intense voices to this tightly paced work of magnificent music.

Verdi, like Shakespeare, knows how to thrill audiences with their own hidden impulses. ghosts, is

ods, dwarves, an enchanted dragon, and a fearless young hero battle over the future of the universe. Weaving together the stories and characters from Rheingold and Die Walküre Opera’s Ring Cycle, opera that shatters the oppression of the ancients to create a vision of a magnificent future where love, courage, and wisdom triumph over the lure of unfettered power. The fearless Siegfried captures the ring of power and is uncorrupted by its death curse or its power. However, it is love that finally teaches him fear as he breaks Brunnhilde’s magic sleeping spell with his kiss. With a superb cast starring heldentenor Stefan Vinke, opera’s most-acclaimed Siegfried, this all-new Tomer Zvulun production creates a timeless, mythical world of heroes and villains.

ex and death. While most opera plots distill these themes, Semele is entirely about these themes. Princess Semele burns with passion for her seducer, Jupiter, king of the gods, and relishes her opportunity to be transported to heaven in endless pleasure. Jupiter’s delicious aria “Where’er you walk” would turn any girl’s head. But Semele is ultimately brought down by Jupiter’s wife Juno and her own blind arrogance. With the exquisite music of a genius, Semele is a love triangle soaked in sensuality, ambition, and jealousy that features many of G.F. Handel’s most beautiful arias and choruses. Elegant and expressive, this all-new production stars the incomparable Lauren Snouffer as Semele and offers the company premiere of a gloriously moving masterpiece of the Baroque era.

he Atlanta Opera returns to Pullman Yards to present new interpretations of both Rent and La bohème in an exciting dual production. The Broadway smash hit Rent, inspired by La bohème, takes the same story of friendship, passion, and art in the time of a pandemic and brings it to the 1990s HIV/AIDS devastation. In conjunction, La bohème at Pullman brings the characters face to face with the COVID-19 crisis. Boheme Project, beginning with our traditional production (Jan 2024) at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, plunges the audience into the world of young creatives facing life and death through three pandemics, across three centuries.

RENT is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com

he 96-Hour Opera Project and Festival celebrate creativity and offer a path into the art of opera for composers and librettists who have been underrecognized in the field. At the heart of the Festival is the 96-Hour Opera Project where competitors create new, 10-minute operas that are reviewed by industry experts in a public performance. The Atlanta Opera provides singing talent and a pianist as collaborators in the competition to bring the new operas to the stage. The winning

team receives the Antinori Grand Prize–a $10,000 award and an Atlanta Opera commission. The festival includes coaching, networking, workshops, and world premiere performances of the commissions awarded to past competition winners.

Presented in collaboration with Morehouse College, the 96-Hour Opera Project and Festival performances are open to the public. Supporting the creative teams, the competition, works-in-progress, and the new works by commission, The Atlanta Opera seeks to welcome new voices to the creative process in the development of opera.

Tickets for the June 2024 events will be available in March.
