The 2025-26 season marks a major milestone in The Atlanta Opera history—the completion of our first RING cycle with a new production of Wagner’s Twilight of the Gods. In fact, this whole monumental season is peppered with the idea of Twilight. We will breathe a fresh new life into some of the most iconic operas in the repertoire. All of them will all have a different facet connected to the idea of a sunset.
History has a way of repeating itself—or, as Mark Twain famously noted, it often rhymes. In our 2025-26 mainstage season, we celebrate this cyclical nature with six masterpieces: La traviata, The Marriage of Figaro, Turandot, and Twilight of the Gods Each of these operas captures the twilight of an era and the dawn of transformation, offering a different reflection on endings, new beginnings, and the transitions that shape us.
Yes, I did say “six.” Mark your calendars for a production in early September that you won’t want to miss. There’s a Spring announcement in collaboration with the Alliance Theatre of our opening Discoveries series show that will really bring home
our season theme. You may also know of my fascination with the connections between film and opera. The second event of our Discoveries series is the ultimate confluence as we present Jean Cocteau’s film La Belle et la Bête, reimagined into an opera-film by Philip Glass.
We open our mainstage season with Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata, which paints a poignant picture of the fleeting glamour of the demi-monde lifestyle in 19th-century Paris. Then, in The Marriage of Figaro, W.A. Mozart takes us to the twilight of aristocratic dominance by unfolding a comedy of love and rebellion while mocking class dynamics and advocating social change.
Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot is a tale of renewal and love triumphing over fear. Our new production of this iconic opera opens on the 100th anniversary of its premiere … to the day!
Finally, Richard Wagner’s Twilight of the Gods, the awe-inspiring conclusion to the RING cycle, brings the ultimate transformation: the end of the gods and the rise of a new age for humankind.
I’m thrilled to bring brilliant performing artists to our casts. Rising stars Mané Galoyan, Luke Sutliff, and Juliana Grigoryan join today’s top singers including Long Long, Peixin Chen, Lise Lindstrom, Piero Pretti, Stefan Vinke and so many more. We welcome the extraordinary director Francesca Zambello and conductors Roberto Kalb and Iván López-Reynoso.
The operas in our season, while drawn from different eras, speak to a timeless theme we all relate to, endings and beginnings, sunsets and sunrises. Each one is a favorite of mine with a unique appeal and I’m excited to share them with you. This is a season that reminds us that even during life’s twilights, there are bright days to come.
Join us for this extraordinary season at The Atlanta Opera. Let’s explore these stories together and experience their transformative power in 2025-26.

A fallen woman. A wealthy suitor.
Remember the folly and madness of true love?
When the young heir falls for the goodhearted party girl, the path of love starts with romance and tenderness but ends in tragedy. La traviata (“The Fallen Woman”) sweeps you into a world where society’s judgments clash with the deepest human emotions, where passion struggles against rigid demands of family and honor. Violetta, a celebrated courtesan, dares to reach for true love in a world that denies her the right to it. Renowned director Francesca Zambello

Be prepared to laugh out loud.
In a brilliant examination of class dynamics, power, and human folly, this opera revels in the wit and warmth of Mozart’s luminous music and underscores the strengths and vulnerabilities of each character. At its heart, the clever servant Figaro fights to marry his true love while outsmarting his amorous and scheming master, who has his own designs on Figaro’s bride-to-be, Susanna. Not only a musical masterpiece—it’s a rallying
cry for love, dignity, and the pursuit of justice that called for the end of aristocratic privilege.

Staggeringly intense. The ultimate triumph. Monumental. Unmissable.
The epic struggle between good and evil reaches its climactic conclusion in Richard Wagner’s Twilight of the Gods (Götterdämmerung), as the battle for the ring of power brings about the destruction of the gods’ world. Devoted love is torn apart by manipulation, and the final reckoning unfolds in a cataclysm of fire and water.
In the operatic repertoire, few works rival the grandeur and emotional intensity of Wagner’s masterpiece. This new production of the monumental finale to the RING cycle will be unforgettable.

A reimagining of the classic fairytale, for film and ensemble, fuses Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film with a powerful score. Innovative composer Philip Glass removed the original soundtrack (including dialogue) and replaced it with an opera score to be performed live to the film. The unlikely love story of the dreamy beauty and the elegant beast unfolds in rare and unexpected ways as the chemistry between the early film and the modern sensibilities of Glass’s score create an emotional landscape of humor, tragedy, and ultimately of redemption.

HOW TO FIND THE ATLANTA OPERA FILM STUDIO:
96-HOUR OPERA FESTIVAL
The 96-Hour Opera Project and Festival celebrate creativity and offer a path into the art of opera for composers and librettists who have been underrecognized in the field. The festival includes a world premiere of the commissioned work, workshops, coaching, networking, and the competition.
The 96-Hour Opera Project and Festival performances are open to the public.
IGNITING IMAGINATION
TOMORROW’S OPERA LOVERS
The magic of opera reaches more than 100,000 students across the Southeast annually through our education programs. Students engage with live and virtual performances that are enhanced by learning opportunities both before and after performances. At the heart of our education program is the Studio Tour, a traveling opera tailored to K-12 students in more than 260 schools.
Our 40-minute version of The Pirates of Penzance, a lively Gilbert & Sullivan favorite, is the featured work in this season’s Studio Tour. Telling the story of the zaniest set of pirates to ever sail the seas, this story bounces from an unlikely pair of headover-heels sweethearts to the importance of truth and duty, even for pirates!
Students can also enjoy mainstage opera dress rehearsals, interactive workshops, and masterclasses with acclaimed singers.
