Recyling is Fun and Easy April 22 is Earth Day and in this month’s issue, we’re focused on sustainability. When it comes to recycling, sometimes it’s easy to feel that your efforts are too small to make a difference. But even the smallest changes can have a large impact. At our house, we do our best to recycle everything we can. My son, Elliot, loves to take out the recycling. Seeing that full bin reminds us of the difference we’re making to the environment. Our family is also trying to create less waste – we’ve switched to paper or reusable straws and use refillable water bottles. It’s easy to jump onto the recycling bandwagon – bring your reusable bags to the grocery store and ask your coffee shop to fill up your reusable mug instead of a foam or paper one. Composting your household waste is easier than it sounds, and there are even services like CompostNow who’ll take care of it for you. Sometimes our family will go an entire week or more with only one bag of trash, because everything else was composted or recycled. Plastic is one of Earth’s worst enemies and there are many initiatives for keeping it out of our oceans and landfills. Recycled plastic is being used to make everything from playground equipment to clothing. Start small – recycle your catalogs and magazines or buying in bulk at the grocery store, every little bit helps. I hope our story, The Plastic Problem, on page 12 will inspire you to do more. Summer is quickly approaching and now is the time to finalize your summer camp plans! Our Summer Day Camp listings will help you explore the many options available, whether your kids love sports or theatre or just being outdoors. My kids are excited about tennis camp and are ready to give circus camp a try, too. Now that spring is here, we’re all ready to spend some time outdoors. Check out the Family Fun Guide for a list of Earth Day events and spring festivals. Read about the city’s many skateboard parks on page 66. Whatever your spring plans, we’d love to hear about them – be sure to share with us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE The #1 manmade thing
that sailors see in our ocean are plastic bags
The amount of plastic in the ocean is set to
increase tenfold by 2020. Most of the plastic that has been made is no longer in use –
about 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic
have been thrown away since 1950.
The New York Times atlantaparent.com
One family can make a huge difference by thinking about plastic use on a daily basis. Here are some ways to start. l Stop using single-use plastics: This includes straws, utensils, plastic bottles and takeout containers. Purchase reusable straws made from silicone or stainless steel and bring this along when eating out or at home. Do the same with utensils. Try to pack lunches using reusable containers or bags instead of plastic bags or containers. If you are going to use a plastic water bottle, try to use it more than once, or even better, opt for a stainless steel or glass bottle.
l Refuse plastics: At a restaurant, kindly ask the waiter to not include a straw or don’t open the packaging when a straw is brought to the table. Ask for a paper bag at the grocery store or bring your own reusable bag to carry groceries. Avoid purchasing plastic toys with extra packaging and opt for toys that have less packaging or none at all. When buying clothes or beauty products ask for them to not be put into a bag.
l Ditch packaged foods: As easy as it is to pick up packaged foods at the store, like cut fruits or vegetables, this is one of the ways you can help reduce waste. Purchase produce without packages and wrapping or bring reusable containers to fill with nuts, flour, etc. and shop in bulk. Another huge waste factor is fast food – think about how many items go into a fast food kids’ meal! Try your best to purchase food items without the excessive packaging and opt for less fast food trips.
l Switch to natural toothbrushes: In the U.S. alone one billion toothbrushes are discarded each year according to plasticoceans.org. Try brush options which are biodegradable like those made from bamboo. A few brands can be purchased on Amazon.com including The Green Root and Wowe Organic. Or purchase a batteryoperated toothbrush, where you only have to switch out the brush heads instead of the entire brush. Quip makes an inexpensive version for $25-$55 available at getquip.com/store and at Target.
l Skip the gum: According to plasticoceans.org, 100,000 tons of gum is discarded each year, which is made from synthetic rubber (a plastic). Once gum is made, it is gum for a very long time, and doesn’t biodegrade easily. Try mints instead that dispose quickly and don’t have to be discarded. If you can’t go without gum, try Simply Gum available at Amazon.com, a gum made from tree sap that is biodegradable.
l Donate toys: Kids own a ton of toys, mostly made from plastic products. Try to give away or sell toys instead of tossing them in the garbage, even if they are small. Ask kids to choose one toy to re-gift for every toy purchased. Items made from wood, cotton, metal and natural rubber are also good alternatives to plastic toys and tend to last longer.
l Green cleaning: Think about how many plastic cleaning bottles are living under your sink, and what do you normally do when they empty? Probably throw them away. The founders behind Truman’s created cleaning cartridges for users to reuse the same bottle continuously. This happens by refilling it with water and inserting refill cartridges, which automatically dispense cleaning concentrate. Each cartridge is recyclable and uses 96 percent less plastic than a typical cleaner. Available at trumans. com. The Starter Kit is $15 and includes four cleaning cartridges. JAWS (Just Add Water System) Cleaning also created a product to keep plastic cleaning bottles at bay. Add water to the plastic bottles for each type of cleaning and add a refill pod. Choose from kitchen cleaner, disinfectant, floor cleaner and more. The kit with four pods is $22.99 and available at jawscleans.com and local retailers like Kroger. l Package-free shop: Owner Lauren Singer decided she wanted to go waste-free and record her journey in her blog, “Trash is for Tossers.” The trash she has produced over the past five years fits inside a 16-ounce Mason Jar. Her store, packagefreeshop.com has solutions for every area of your household including baby, self-care, kitchen items and more. Other options for purchasing “zero-waste” products include wildminimalist.com and lifewithoutplastic.com. These sites are also great places to start to know what to look for in local stores or other places online.

PLASTIC BOTTLES TRANSFORMED Image: Rachel Beach, “Craving Some Creativity”
Start collecting plastic bottles for craft time, and use these ideas to make a plastic bottle new again.
l Use as planters: Cut the top off of a soda bottle and save the base. Paint the outside of the bottle any way you would like to resemble an animal, face or character. Then fill with soil and seeds, add water and place in a windowsill for sunlight. Rachel with “Craving Some Creativity” paints her planters like a frog, pig and bunny and cuts out ears. Find her instructions at cravingsomecreativity.com/soda-bottle-animalplanters l Paint with the base: The base of most plastic bottles makes for a great stamp. Place it in differing colors of paint and then press it on to construction paper. You can use orange, yellow, pink or red for flowers and paint stems and leaves on after the “flowers” dry as well. l Make a piggy bank: Kids can use plastic bottles for saving change, and with the help of an adult, can add a slit to the cap for a coin dispenser. Go a step farther and decorate the bottle with paint, glitter, paper and more. Michelle from “A Little Tipsy” created her piggy banks using mini water bottles and cut out paper ears. Find her instructions at alittletipsy.com and search for “piggy bank.”
Image: Susie Rugg, “Handy with “Scissors”
l Design a boat: Make a plastic bottle float by cutting the side to resemble a boat, then test out different types of sails made from cut foam or other waterproof materials to see which one works best. Susie from “Handy with Scissors” has step-by-step instructions on how to turn any bottle into a sea vessel at handywithscissors. com/plastic-bottle-boats.

Kids, Parents and Families Benefit Through Flexibility, Fitness and Coping Skills by Sara Barry
I
f you think yoga is about flexibility, challenging poses and a Zen attitude, you’ve got part of it. Yoga has physical and emotional benefits for people of all ages including children. “Getting kids involved in yoga and meditation is a life-long win for them. Both yoga and meditation teach kids the benefits of fitness, but they are also valuable coping skills that kids can key into during life’s challenges,” says yoga teacher Kerin Monaco. 16 Atlanta Parent April 2019
Serenity, Strength, Self-Confidence Monaco started practicing yoga herself in high school to combat crippling anxiety that cropped up around SATs and college applications. She went on to teach yoga and recently began to share yoga with her young family. When her daughter was 9 months old, Monaco started to practice with her on the mat, where they both loved the peaceful energy that yoga brings. That peaceful energy is one of the key reasons adults practice yoga, and that calm is great for kids too. That’s not the only benefit though. Yoga teacher Katy Dagle, says that for younger kids, yoga builds coordination, balance and self-regulation. For older kids, yoga continues to help with coordination and balance and also helps build flexibility, strength and self-confidence. The emotional benefits can be especially helpful in the challenging tween and teen years. In addition to these physical and emotional benefits, yoga can help develop values, such as honesty and nonviolence. These values are an integral part of yoga that is often overlooked, but they can be an added benefit to families practicing together. atlantaparent.com
Start with Classes An experienced teacher helps children learn poses correctly and can offer modifications or adjustments to things that don’t feel right. Kids (and grownups) should be reminded to do what feels right for their body. Not every child can do every pose, and some days a familiar pose is harder than others. Yoga is noncompetitive. Teachers should help kids focus on their own practice every day and create a supportive environment. To find kids’ classes, use Atlanta Parent’s guide to kid-friendly studios or check with local yoga studios, gyms or YMCAs. (Some studios have an age restriction, so it’s good to check first.) Once familiar with yoga, kids can use videos and yoga cards to practice at home.
Practice Anywhere Classes provide a safe introduction to yoga and ongoing support, but the beauty of yoga is that you can practice any place and any time. Here are two practices you can do anywhere: l Breathe: Breathing can be centering,
energizing or calming. For parents, try breathing deeply while holding an upset child. Dagle uses “flower breathing” with her toddler: sniff a flower, let it go with a sigh, to help diffuse big emotions. Dagle teaches older kids to use breathing exercises to calm themselves before a test. She encourages them to put their feet firmly on the ground at their desk, inhale for a count of four, and exhale for a count of six for one minute to help them feel both calm and grounded. l Be present: Practice mindfulness and being present. That means noticing your environment. There are lots of ways to practice this with kids – you don’t even have to call it mindfulness. Sit quietly together or go for a walk, and see what you notice. Try closing your eyes. What sounds and smells do you sense? Turn off your phone and spend time doing an activity with your kids, whether it’s reading, coloring, dancing, snuggling or building. Just focus on what you’re doing, with no distractions. Describe something familiar as if it were new. In an exercise from “Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children” by Thich Nhat Hanh, kids pretend they are Martians seeing something from Earth for the first time. Hand your kids a familiar object (the book uses raisins, but you can use any simple object or food kids “see” every day). Remind them that they have never seen it before. Ask them to look, touch, smell, listen and taste and describe their experience. Yoga builds strength and flexibility, selfconfidence and focus. Kids get comfortable in and connected to their own bodies and minds, and learn practices that they use for the rest of their lives.
atlantaparent.com
YOGA TIPS AND TOOLS For Parents Get back on the mat after having a baby, as your doctor gives the OK. Just remember to meet your practice where it is. Your body has been through a lot. Practice with your kids around. Put your baby on the mat with you or use your mat in the kids’ playroom. If you’re used to a peaceful yoga studio, practicing with your kids around will be different, but still beneficial. Remember that your yoga is good for your kids. It may feel selfish to take time for a class or home practice, but it’s worth it.
Tips for Families Keep it fun. Use yoga songs and games. Let kids pick or even lead poses. If energy levels are high, try some poses or actions to use some of that energy before shifting to something calmer. Remember you can practice anywhere. Remind kids to use their breathing when they are getting frustrated. If you can’t get kids to take a deep breath, try taking calming breaths yourself. It helps keep you from getting worked up and helps change the dynamic in the room. Try mindfulness on long car trips or while waiting in line.

Marcus Autism Center
Autism and Early Intervention
Atlanta’s Nationally-Recognized Center for Autism Marcus Autism Center, one of the largest autism centers in the United States, has been serving children and adolescents with autism and related disorders since 1991. It is one of only five National Institute of Health (NIH) Autism Centers of Excellence (ACE). The ACE designation supports research to identify causes and best treatments of autism. In conjunction with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the center treats more than 5,500 children each year, and offers services such as assessment and diagnosis, medical services, severe behavior therapy and a language and learning program. Children will be assessed and diagnosed at the center in two groups: Ages 2 and younger will be tested using the oneday toddler evaluation and ages 3 and older will have a two-day appointment. These involve developmental testing, assessment of social interaction, communication and other objectives. Parents will receive a full report of the findings so they can choose the next step for treatment. Research is an important part of what Marcus Autism Center does, and it seeks participants for its ongoing studies. The center is now enrolling participants in several studies for expectant mothers and newborns, toddlers and school-age children. Check out marcus.org to find out more.

C
hildren with autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, face challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and non-verbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States, so chances are you know at least one person or family touched by autism. While most children are diagnosed after age 4 research shows that intervention starting at 18 months helps children with autism make significant gains in social skills, communication and even IQ, and there are some therapies that can be used as early as 12 months. Atlanta Parent talked to a parent of a child with autism and a professor who have both seen the hope that lies in early intervention for children on the spectrum. atlantaparent.com
One Mom’s Intuition “When your mom gut tells you something is wrong, you listen,” says Kimberly Dick, Executive Director of Field Development for the Georgia chapter of Autism Speaks. She observed her son Caleb missing developmental milestones when he was a toddler. “He wasn’t making eye contact and wasn’t responding to his name. We thought maybe he was deaf. He was having unusual sensation to stimuli – he would shake his head back and forth really fast.” Although insurance didn’t cover the costly evaluation, Dick took Caleb to a developmental pediatrician. “I decided I’d rather go and pay so that if something really was wrong, we could get him the support and services he needed.” When he was two and a half, Caleb was diagnosed with autism. As Dick helped her son, she advocated for insurance coverage for families of children with autism. She got involved with Autism Speaks, an organization that supports individuals with autism, and now oversees the Georgia Chapter. “Caleb is a great example of early intervention,” Dick says. “After his diagnosis, he received speech and occupational therapy. We tried to help him reach those developmental milestones like his peers.” Today 13-year-old Caleb attends The Community School in Decatur. When he was diagnosed, he spoke very little – “he had one or two words” Dick says. “He is verbal now – very verbal. He communicates his wants and needs, and is continuing his journey in middle school, learning how to navigate his world. Children with autism learn everything in a different way that other kids pick up just from observing.” Cont’d on page 20

Autism and Early Intervention
Kimberly Dick and son Caleb
AN EXCEPTIONAL SCHOOL FOR EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS WE’RE EXCEPTIONAL . . .
Even if red flags for autism turn out to be nothing, early intervention “absolutely can’t hurt,” Dick says. While children can see great gains with early intervention, Dick explains that there is no cure or recovery for autism, but the symptoms can lessen. And while studies do show that early intervention helps most children make gains, there is a wide range of characteristics on the spectrum. “What we don’t know or understand is that there are families that do receive an early diagnosis that go through early interventions and their children may not speak, but they can communicate using assisted technology.” “I’m so thankful that we received the early intervention,” Dick says. “There are many moments or times we are proud of Caleb or he surprises us. He just had his bar mitzvah, a typical milestone for children that became achievable for him.” “At Cumberland, we study college prep academics or prepare for a vocational career, try a sport or a club for the first time – ever. We learn we’re not so different after all.”

Before the Diagnosis The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children receive an autism screening at 18 and 24 months. A widely used screening tool recommended by the AAP is the Modified Checklist of Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT). Dr. Jennifer Stapel-Wax, Associate Professor at Emory University, says this early intervention is key. “There is tremendous hope in treating children early and changing the way their brain is developing in relationship to the autism spectrum disorder,” says Stapel-Wax. Stapel-Wax, who is also the Director of Infant and Toddler Community Outreach Research at Marcus Autism Center, says she has seen children with red flags before 18 months receive intervention that headed off some of the detrimental impacts of autism. atlantaparent.com
“You don’t need to have a diagnosis of autism to be implementing strategies to help,” Stapel-Wax says.” And she says it doesn’t hurt if a screening is positive and then further evaluation shows a child doesn’t have autism. “Even if they end up not having autism those false positives are not false positives for a developmental delay.” Stapel-Wax says all parents can observe their babies and engage in specific relationshipbased activities that help intervene if their children do receive an ASD diagnosis later. She advises parents to look for other kinds of communicative behaviors besides speaking. For example, if a jet flies overhead, “the typical baby will orient to the sound, smile, look at the sky, point to the sky and say ‘gook’. They have given several communicative behaviors all within a few seconds. The only thing you might hear is ‘gook.’” Stapel-Wax says parents should learn what it looks like when neurotypical babies are nine months old and they are playing with others. She recommends the website firstwordsproject. com which has materials like “16 by 16” which stands for 16 gestures by 16 months. The document starts at 9 months, and with checklists and photographs shows parents the communicative gestures babies should be developing up to 16 months. Stapel-Wax also recommends the website autismnavigator.com,
a collection of web-based tools and courses that include video footage of toddlers with autism and caregivers working with them. “Many of these materials are freely available and provide parents with the lens through which to look at their children,” Stapel-Wax says. “This isn’t just good for the 1 in 59 children that have autism, but it’s good for all kids.”
Know the Red Flags
Tips for the Journey
By 9 months: n Little or no back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions.
If parents do receive a diagnosis of autism, Dick gives some advice she’s learned on her own journey as a parent of a child with autism. First “breathe,” she says. “Someone told me that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. You don’t have to do every therapy at once. Find the ones where you are seeing the biggest benefit and then add others in slowly.” She also recommends keeping a journal. “Write when you have bad days, but also write when you have really good days.” She advises parents to be diligent in their research and make sure it is all scientifically sound. “Be cautious,” she says. “We’re all looking for a miracle.” Finally, she says, find community. “Find your village,” she says. “That’s critical – finding others to commiserate and celebrate with.”
With Early Intervention, children with autism can make great gains throughout life. Know the following “red flags” by age: By 6 months: n Few or no big smiles or engaging expressions n Limited or no eye contact
By 12 months n Little or no babbling, back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving n Little or no response to name By 16 months n Very few or no words By 24 months n Very few or no meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) Source: Autism Speaks

BEST THINGS TO DO IN SOUTH FLORIDA WITH KIDS
Fort Zachary Taylor State Park
Sea animals, beach time, knockout sunsets, fruity drinks, and a relaxed vibe – what could be better? Our family spent a long weekend exploring Fort Lauderdale, the Everglades and Key West. Here are our top kid-friendly things to do in South Florida.
Everglades National Park About an hour from Ft. Lauderdale, there are two entrances to Everglades National Park – both are worth exploring. Stop at Coe Visitor’s Center near the main entrance for maps and information. At the Ahinga Trail near Coe Visitor’s Center, we saw alligators, turtles, birds, grasshoppers and more. Take the pleasant 45 minute drive from the main entrance to see crocodiles and manatees and the amazing view of Florida Bay near Flamingo Visitor’s Center. At the Shark Valley entrance, hop on the tram or rent bicycles to enjoy an observation tower and several hiking trails. See the Everglades via airboat near the Shark Valley entrance as well. Consider one day for the main entrance and one day for Shark Valley. Find schedules and more details at nps.gov/ever.
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park in Ft. Lauderdale At Fort Lauderdale’s “Central Park,” take a water taxi on the intracoastal waterway, explore a huge Banyan tree, enjoy two fun playgrounds, rent a kayak, rent bikes, or just take a nature stroll with your kids throughout Birch State Park (floridastateparks.org/HughTaylorBirch). The 2-mile paved loop is perfect for hopping on and off, whether you’re biking or driving through the park.
Pelican Grand Resort in Fort Lauderdale
Key West Pier
22 Atlanta Parent April 2019
Pelican Grand Beach Resort is right on the ocean with excellent amenities and one of the coolest pools our kids have ever experienced. They loved the lazy river, zero-entry pool, and jumping into the deep end. The lazy river even had inner tubes to float around in. Get fine dining on Pelican Grand’s oceanfront porch at OCEAN2000, the onsite restaurant. Grab breakfast or lunch and take in the view. Dinner was perfect as they had a varied kid’s menu. We all enjoyed dining and taking in the sunset over the ocean. There is also an ice cream parlor and necessities shop on site. The rooms are spacious with a trendy, modern update. PURE Spa, on the top floor of the resort, is a great escape with an amazing view of the ocean. Take a break from the kids and get a massage, facial or pedicure. Enjoy a drink or fruitinfused water and relax on the outside patio of the spa. Find more information on the Pelican Grand Resort at pelicanbeach.com. atlantaparent.com

Stops Along the Florida Keys There are several stops you can make on the way to Key West, including the Dolphin Research Center, Bahia Honda State Park, and John Pennkamp Coral Reef State Park. Our favorite was The Turtle Hospital in Marathon (turtlehospital.org). This nonprofit rescues sea turtles, treats them, and releases them back into the wild. Kids meet many turtles and even get the opportunity to feed them.
Key West with Kids Key West is much more than a party town. It’s fun for families with lots to explore, including The Shipwreck Museum, Custom House Key West, and Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. You can easily swing

by Sloppy Joe’s, made world-famous by Ernest Hemingway, for a piña colada and keep on moving. I recommend a house tour in the morning while the kids are on their best behavior, and a promise of a Conch Train ride and tour after (conchtourtrain.com). Kids love riding the train, and you and your kids will learn about the history of the town. Visit Ernest Hemingway’s home and learn about his life and writing in the 18th-century home built by a well-to-do marine architect and salvage wrecker. (hemingwayhome.com). At Truman’s Little White House, we learned about why Harry Truman chose Key West as his “home away from home” and about his life and time in the White House (trumanlittlewhitehouse.com).
Ocean Key Resort in Key West A perfect location in Key West, Ocean Key Resort and Spa is adjacent to world-famous Mallory Square. Take in the street performers, buy fun drinks in coconuts, and watch the beautiful Key West sunset. Choose a room with a balcony facing the ocean and take in the view, or just jump in the pool at dusk and catch the sunset. Hot Tin Roof, Ocean Key’s Tennessee Williams themed restaurant, offers top-notch dining with kid-friendly options. From the outdoor covered balcony of the restaurant, we enjoyed the buzz of Old Key West with live music from sunset pier below and ocean views. Don’t miss the chance to indulge in the seafood paella entree and cap off the evening with key lime pie and a mojito. HOW TO PLAN AN “EGG-CEPTIONAL” EGG HUNT
Whatever your kids’ ages, make this year’s hunt extra-fun with these fresh ideas. Bunny Print Hunt For very young children, cut “bunny prints” out of pink paper and make a trail that leads to a series of treats.
Secret Message Hunt Print short messages that instruct the kids to do a task, such as quack like a duck or hop like a bunny. Place the messages inside eggs. After finding ten eggs and doing the tasks, they’re allowed to hunt for their basket. Hand them a message containing the clue they need to find it.
Indoor Hunt with Clues Write out clues that take kids to various locations, where they’ll find the next one. Use at least five clues to lead them to their baskets. This hunt is easy to move indoors if it’s raining.
The Golden Egg Hunt Add an additional treasure to your regular hunt. Purchase a large gold egg and fill it with something special – a gift for the finder, or a treat for the whole family such as a trip to a favorite restaurant, park or movie tickets.
A Puzzling Hunt Purchase a blank jigsaw puzzle at a crafts store. Draw a message for your kids, giving them the information they need to find their basket. Place puzzle pieces in plastic eggs and let the fun begin. When the puzzle is assembled, they follow the clue to their Easter goodies.

Team Hunt
Place different colors of plastic egg halves together. Each team has a given amount of time to find as many mismatched eggs as they can, then put the correct colors together. Award all team members a small prize for each color-correct egg. The team with the most eggs earns an additional, larger treat. This idea also works well if you’re hosting a neighborhood egg hunt.
DYE THOSE EGGS! There are many options for coloring eggs! Tablet-based kits have been around since the late 1800s – jazz up your method with these ideas:
Glow in the Dark Hunt
Save your egg hunt until it’s dark outside – place glow sticks in larger plastic eggs to create an indoor or outdoor nighttime hunt. You may choose to have the kids find a certain number of glowing eggs to “buy” their basket.
Treasure Hunt
Sketch a map of your house or yard and create a treasure map with clues that lead to the locations of eggs or treats. – Jan Pierce
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL EASTER EGG HUNT l Mix it Up
Fill plastic eggs with non-candy treats to add variety and limit sugar, such as coins, erasers, finger puppets and other small toys. l Keep it Fair
l Mix your own dyes by combining ½ cup boiling water, 1 teaspoon vinegar
and 10 drops food coloring. Dip eggs for 5 minutes or until the desired shade is reached.
Make sure younger members of the family get a fair chance to find the treasures. Older kids can pair up with younger ones to help. Eggs may also be color-coded by age group.
l Look for natural coloring kits
with plant-based dyes. The eco-eggs Egg Coloring Kit contains three dyes and instructions for creating six colors; at bellalunatoys.com. $10. You can also create vegetable-based dyes at home – visit goodhousekeeping.com for complete directions.
l Create patterns with stickers or rubber bands before dipping eggs in
dye. Remove after eggs dry. l For less mess and foolproof
l Make it Last
Extend the egg-hunting fun by placing Easter baskets in one location. Children have to bring each egg back to the basket before looking for more. l Be Eco-Friendly
colorful stripes, try Egg Mazing’s Egg Decorator. The battery-powered unit spins the egg while kids apply color with markers. Ages 3 and older. At eggmazing.com. $24.99

Save plastic eggs to use next year, or check your local crafts store for biodegradable cardboard or compostable plastic eggs.

GET MOVING AT THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF ATLANTA
“R
un! Jump! Fly! Adventures in Action” is a fun and engaging way to get your kids moving. A series of eight stations, including Kung Fu Forest, Climbing Canyon, Surfing and Snowboarding, and Action Star Training challenge kids of all ages and physical abilities. Inside the exhibit, we picked up an action tracker sheet so we could stamp each station as we went. My 5-year-old, Cricket, loved pretending to surf and snowboard on the motion-sensor activated boards. She also kept returning to Flycycle Sky because pedaling the stationary bike lights up a The Details star board. “Run! Jump! Fly! There is construction scaffolding outside the museum, but it’s still open during normal hours. The museum is closed on Wednesdays. As a parent, I love that I can bring in my own snacks or food to eat in the designated area. After all the running and jumping, I would suggest packing a light snack or even a full box lunch. – Lauren Townsend

Carve. Grind. Ollie. Pop. Where to Skate by Jennifer Wilson
Kids love the thrills and freedom of riding on a board and the self-confidence that comes with mastering a new skill. Skateboarding has many physical benefits, including coordination, concentration, balance and exercise. And it helps children develop an understanding of the importance of practice, patience and dealing with consequences. Skating on a sidewalk, parking lot or street is not the safest option. Instead, try one of these skate parks in metro Atlanta and Athens. Most skate parks do not have supervision, so parents will want to stay close by. 66 Atlanta Parent    April 2019

‘Why I Skate’ How to Get Started Purchase proper gear to ensure that your son or daughter has the safest skateboarding experiences possible. Your child will need: Elbow pads ($14-$30) Wrist guards ($13-$25) Knee pads ($20-$40) Skateboard ($150-$180) Helmet ($25 or more) When buying your skateboard, make sure to purchase at a store where employees have a good knowledge of skateboarding. The size of board should be matched to the size and weight of your child. Purchasing the wrong size skateboard could lead to injuries or cause damage to the board. Beginners should take lessons to learn safe skating techniques. Kennesaw Skatepark offers periodic group lessons and Brook Run Skatepark has group classes 9 a.m.-noon on Saturdays. Skateboard shops sometimes offer group lessons and can recommend instructors for individual lessons.

Nico Cardenas, 13, of Dunwoody started skateboarding about a year ago and loves the sport. Like most kids who learn skateboard skills, he has no plans to enter competitions. Atlanta Parent asked him to talk about his hobby.
Q: A:
What’s your favorite part of skateboarding?
I like riding on the street and sidewalks to clear my head. It’s relaxing and nice to feel the breeze on my face.
Q: A:
How did you learn to skate?
I went to a camp called Camp Blue Ridge. There’s a skatepark there, and I chose skateboarding as one of my activities, where they had instructors to teach us. Learning to skate was one of the best moments I’ve ever had.
Q: A:
Where do you like to skate?
I’ll skate on the street if it’s empty, or on the sidewalks. If I want to do tricks, I go to the local skatepark (Brook Run).
Q: A:
What has been the most challenging part so far?
As a beginner, just learning to balance was really difficult. As I’ve gotten better, I’d say learning some of the tricks I do has been hard.
Q: A:
Do you have any tips for beginners?
Don’t try to learn by yourself! Ask a pro to help teach you, maybe at a skatepark if there’s one near you.
