Pulling out my Christmas boxes and decorating for the holidays always puts me in a festive mood. Atlanta is such a great place to be for the holidays! Everywhere you go, the city is decked out in bright lights. Whether you’re driving through your own neighborhood or going to see thousands of lights at one of the larger displays at Zoo Atlanta, Life University or State Botanical Garden, there’s plenty to see and enjoy.
The holiday carol, “The 12 Days of Christmas,” is all about giftgiving. We brought you our own version of the 12 Days of Christmas in our Holiday Fun Guide. Choose one (or many!) of the events and happenings, and give your family the gift of experience. Our guide has everything you need to create your holiday bucket list – amazing light displays, parades, “The Nutcracker” and “A Christmas Carol” performances, Santa sightings and more.
Although we rarely have real snow in Atlanta in December, there are still plenty of ways to have winter fun. Snow is falling all around Atlanta at festivals and attractions. Go snow tubing and make snow angels at License to Chill Snow Island, play at Snowfest, or enjoy ice skating outdoors.
An important part of the holidays is giving back to the community, whether it’s volunteering, collecting food or buying gifts for a child in need through Clark’s Christmas Kids. Getting your kids involved helps them learn at an early age the satisfaction we get from helping others. Read our Adventures in Giving Story for some fun ideas that will get the whole family involved.

Celebrate the Festival of Lights!
by Tali BenjaminDIY Decorations
Hanukkah decorations can be hard to find and may not have the look you are going for. Instead of stressing, make it a fun family activity and create some of your own. Plus, you can date them and then look back on the memories you made as you celebrate Hanukkah each year.
n Dreidel Garland – You can make strands of garland in dreidel shapes to match the colors in your home. Then adorn the mantle or staircases with your artful creations. Cut dreidels out of cardboard and then cover them in foil paper or wrapping paper to give the colors and patterns you want. Attach the dreidels to string or yarn with hot glue to create the garland.
n Paper Napkin Rings – When you invite family and friends over for latkes, create cute paper napkin rings with Stars of David cutouts or drawings of menorahs. You can use a variety of shades of blue and white to make them pop. Also, they can double as place cards by simply adding each guest’s name to their napkin ring.
n Door Banner – Create an outdoor decoration with some felt. You’ll need a sturdy ribbon for the top so it hangs nicely on the front door. Cut letters out of felt (or get some help from store bought ones), add glitter and shiny stars to highlight the theme of the holiday.
n Wrapping Paper – Get white and brown craft paper, some Hanukkah-shaped stamps and paint. Then, let the kids go wild making their own unique designs. It will make opening gifts even more fun since they will have helped with the gift wrapping.
Latke Love
Latkes – traditionally potato pancakes – are the quintessential Hanukkah food. If you’re looking for some new ways to jazz them up, try one of these.
n Sweet Potato Latkes: Instead of white potatoes, use sweet potatoes and a touch of cinnamon. It’s a fun flavor profile and a good way to get your kids to try a different type of potato.
n Giant Latkes: If you still want the fried effect, but don’t want to make as many latkes, make one the size of your frying pan and then just slice it and serve. It might look like pizza, but it’s still a latke!
n Muffin Tin Latkes: If you hate the way your house smells after frying latkes for an hour or two, try this hack! Place dollops of latke mixture in greased muffin tins and then flatten with a spoon. Bake at 400 for about 10 minutes, then flip and bake for about 5 more minutes.
n Sauce Substitutes: Swap the classic sour cream for tzatziki or ranch dip. Instead of applesauce, try peach or tomato chutney.
Spread your light!
Make one night “give back night.” Have your kids choose a present for a child in need and donate it. Or, choose a local non-profit to make a family donation or volunteer with.
It’s the season to observe the Jewish holiday – Hanukkah. The eight crazy nights begin at sundown on December 18. Get in the holiday spirit with decorations and traditional foods – here are some fun and festive ideas to try.
Adventures In Holiday Giving
by Christina KatzHere come the holidays and with them, the spirit of giving. But who says you have to give back the same way every year? By varying the ways you give, you can create meaningful experiences beyond simply writing a check. Make giving more of a family adventure, and encourage discussions on having empathy for others. Here are some ideas to get your family started.
n Take a Ticket
Look for giving trees in stores that support local charities. Contribute a longed-for toy to a child who might not otherwise receive it or donate experiences like going to the zoo or to the theater.
n Feed Your Community
Consider making a donation to the Atlanta Community Food Bank (acfb.org) or look for an organization that provides holiday meals to those in need, such as Hosea Helps (4hosea. org) or Lift Up Atlanta (liftupatlanta.org).
n Think Stocking Stuffers
Buy small gifts for family helpers like babysitters, yard workers and dog walkers. A little bit of thoughtfulness goes a long way.
n Toys for the Win
Watch for toy collection programs at local businesses, like Toys for Tots or Clark’s Christmas Kids. Have your child pick out a toy they once enjoyed receiving to help kids in need.
n Fill Those Pots
Keep change in your purse to give to donation to bell-ringers and others asking for a holiday handout. This is an interactive way to teach children that it is a blessing to give as much as it is to receive.
n De-Clutter All Year
The less clutter you have, the more generous you have been. Gather donations after the kids go back to school, make another round of donations after the holidays, then declutter once more after school gets out for the summer.
n Let Kids Sort, Too
Ask your kids to go through their rooms a month before the holidays to make room for the new. Consider the best ways to donate based on what they have to offer.
n Use Sock Sense
Shelters often need donations of new socks. Watch for sales on socks all season, gather as many as you can, and contribute them to a local shelter.
n Connect Directly
Join an online community group such as Nextdoor and watch for requests from local families for holiday assistance. Be sure to choose a safe place to meet up to make any exchanges of goods or food.
n Volunteer as a Family
Contact local senior centers, soup kitchens or animal shelters and see if they offer families a way to participate together. In Atlanta, Pebble Tossers (pebbletossers.org) and Open Hand Atlanta (openhandatlanta.org) offer volunteer opportunities for teens, kids and families.
n Over There
Send holiday boxes to soldiers serving our country overseas. Put yourself in their shoes before you shop. What would surprise and delight you?
n Double Your Donation
Participate in a matching gift program of some kind. Ask your employer what they offer.
n Roll Up a Sleeve
Donate blood with teens who are eligible to participate. Make it an annual tradition.
n Spread Seeds
Make a feeder for winter birds and keep it full of birdseed you buy in bulk until spring arrives.
n Turn the Page
Go through your shelves and remove books you no longer love. Donate them to your local library or resale shop.
n Sweets for the Sweet
Write thank-you notes to teachers and instructors and include a gift card for something tasty.
n Shop Win-Win-Win
Buy some of your holiday gifts from a shop or organization that supports others. Sustainable gifts, shared profits and sales that support the community are all fair game. Find locally made, fair trade gifts at The Local Exchange in Marietta, Eco Home in Buckhead or Homegrown Decatur.
n Donate Warmth
Dig through your closets and find old coats or even new coats that seldom get worn. Offer them to a local coat drive or tax-exempt charitable resale shop.
n Create Good Karma
Pay for a cup of coffee or cocoa for the next person at the local coffee shop or drive-up window and make someone’s day.
n Consider Ongoing Giving
Together, come up with ways your family can give year-round. Charities are often flooded with donations around the holidays but could use more support during the rest of the year. Spring and early summer are common dry periods for food banks.
