Gifts of the Holiday Season
IN A DOGEAT-DOG WORLD, BEARS RULE.
My kids get really, really excited as the holidays approach. Elliot, who is 4, and Corinne, age 2, can’t wait to see what Santa brings. They also love all the lights, decorations, family and traditions that come with the holidays, but somehow Santa tends to take the cake. And I’m OK with that. Watching children open gifts on Christmas morning is one of the “fun moments” in every parent’s life – seeing their smiles and joyous chatter, even over the simplest of toys. But it’s also easy to get carried away with the amount of gifts Santa, mom and dad, grandparents, friends and relatives may bring. As I look at the amount of toys that have snuck into our house throughout the year, both big and small, I start thinking about what needs to move out and onto another child before more comes in. I think that’s why I’ve been so taken with the parenting blogs I’ve been reading about the “four gifts,” to put more meaning and less stress in the holidays. The four gifts consist of “something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read.” I especially like the “four gifts” idea that includes something to read – a love of reading is a gift that will last long after they’ve outgrown a doll or scooter. I always welcome a good book into our house. “Four gifts” has so much appeal, too, when you consider how many old toys clutter our homes (for ideas on gifts that are not toys, see “Think Outside the (Toy) Box – with Creative Gifts for Kids” on Page 26) and how much we spend on them. All of our kids get so many gifts that it just makes sense to put some limits on Santa. Buy that gift they really want, the American Girl doll or that Radio Flyer scooter. Then fill the other categories with small, meaningful gifts. My family isn’t quite there yet – I love shopping and can’t get enough of the fun of buying gifts for my kids, but this year St. Nick may have a little lighter bag to carry. Moms Go Mobile This Holiday Season More moms are using mobile phones to complete purchases rather than just to compare prices or find coupons. In the past year, the number of moms using their smartphones to make a purchase has risen 33 percent, according to a survey by Baby Center. Scanning items while in-store also has risen, with 55 percent making purchases immediately after scanning items with their phone; 64 percent said that coupons are their reason for scanning. Almost 60 percent of moms have retailer apps on their phones and 56 percent look up prices while shopping.

Atlanta lights up during Christmas and Hanukkah with tradition, love and cheer as families celebrate their faith. Four metro families share the traditions that make their holidays special. n
The Rothberg Family
Mark and Stacy Rothberg of Dunwoody center their holiday traditions around the lights of Hanukkah, prayers and song. Evenings are spent with family and friends, lighting one candle on the menorah each night for eight days after dinner, and spinning the dreidel to win a bit of gelt. Decorating the house with menorahs the children have made is a family tradition, and the smell of latkes is a reminder of feasts to come.

Gift-giving is primarily for the children. Stacey Rothberg frequents the Dollar Store to buy gifts for her children, stressing that less is more. Layla, 7, and Hadley, 5, are learning early to be charitable to those less fortunate – the family buys gifts to donate to a women’s shelter in Atlanta. Hanukkah means being with family and passing on Jewish traditions to the next generation. Stacy Rothberg says, “We love the culture and values of being Jewish and want our girls to cherish these beliefs, too.”
The Enciu Family
The Enciu family of Suwanee enjoys keeping Romanian Christmas traditions alive by joining in caroling right after the Christmas Eve service on Dec. 24. Families drive through the Atlanta area and carol in areas heavily populated with Romanians, singing in both Romanian and English for all neighbors to enjoy. Caroling lasts the entire night and exhausted families return home on Christmas morning to open a few gifts left under the Christmas tree. A large breakfast consisting of Cozonack, a rolled pastry filled with walnuts and fruit, pork sausage, and coffee is consumed – then carolers take a well-deserved rest. Nick and Alina Enciu say their children, Nicole, 7, and Michael, 4, are taught that Christmas is an important holiday that unifies many nations through the birth of Christ. Through their church, the family sends supplies to Romanian orphanages that, Alina Enciu says, “Are only the essentials that we, here, take for granted.” Christmas cookie exchanges are common and visiting with friends and family is the most important of all. 14 Atlanta Parent December 2015

The Pynzenyk Family
The Pynzenyks of Johns Creek and other Ukrainian families celebrate Christmas following the Eastern Orthodox calendar. Christmas Eve is on Three Kings Day, observed Jan. 6. After the first star in the sky shows, a candle is lit and 12 meatless dishes such as Kutia (boiled wheat with honey) and Pyrogy (savory-filled pies) are served. The family then carols with their church, going from house to house dressed in character clothing. Vitality and Anna Pynzenyk say that “Caroling is very energetic. There’s food offered in every house and the children get candies and money.” Their children, Danylo, 9, and Antonina, 6, look forward to a visit from Saint Nicholas, which falls on Dec. 19. Saint Nicholas comes to visit well-behaved children while they are sleeping and leaves candies and small toys under their pillow. Family values and traditions are what many Ukrainian families focus on during the Christmas season, the Pynzenyks say.

The Dolde Family
Daniel and Jenna Dolde of northwest Atlanta kick off their family Christmas traditions right after Thanksgiving by cutting down a Christmas tree at Coker Tree Farm. Decorating their home is a big event and Jenna Dolde enjoys turning their dining room table into a mini Christmas village, complete with her father’s 60-year-old train set. The Elf on the Shelf reminds their children, Conor, 4, and Emmaline, 2, to behave, and a trip to the Botanical Garden to sit on Santa’s lap is a must every year. On Christmas Eve, Conor helps his dad light up the driveway with luminaria so Santa has a runway to land his sleigh. Christmas morning brings the family together to opens gifts from Santa and, afterwards, they spend Christmas morning with Daniel’s family. The following morning they’re off to Miami to see Jenna’s family. c

Kids Can Learn Plenty by Writing a Simple Note by Alyssa Chirco
Saying “thank you” in the form of a simple, handwritten note is a great way for kids to express gratitude during the holiday season, and it’s the perfect way to encourage them to work on penmanship, grammar and word crafting during their break from the classroom. These tips will simplify the process of writing thank you notes in your home, and teach your children to better appreciate the gifts they are given and the individuals who have given them.

Say thank you yourself If you treat thank you notes as an obligation, your kids are going to see them that way, too. Instead, emphasize the importance of letting others know how much you appreciate their thoughtfulness. Write thank you notes yourself, and your children will be more receptive to the idea of writing their own.

Make the notes age-appropriate Young children just learning to write may not be able to compose long, eloquent letters, but they can draw pictures or sign their name. One fun way to limit the amount of writing required is to include a picture of your child with the gift he or she has received.

Break up the work Active children rarely want to sit in a chair and write for hours. If you have many notes to write, avoid working on them all at once. Instead, plan several short sessions. Make it fun by serving a special treat like popcorn or hot chocolate.

Screen time for kids becomes more palatable when we know they’re learning something at the same time. But sorting through the thousands of learning apps is a challenge. Here are a few recommendations for Android and Apple devices. The museum’s new central exhibit, Gateway to the World, includes a two-story climbing structure that takes kids through the layers of the earth into a one-of-a-kind rotating globe. The $8.2 million renovation and expansion has more surprises in store, including a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) focus that will create more hands-on activities for older children.

from the simple mechanics to the elaborate. Imagine a two-seat bubble with propellers, a simple concept capable of great results. Children were drawn to the copter, and loved the rounded windows. The pint-sized helicopter allowed children to see the interior levers and mechanics. Though there are plenty of exhibits at the museum for young children, this exhibit probably wouldn’t captivate toddlers or preschoolers – no buttons to push, or displays to touch, but lots of information to read. Go prepared to stay all day – we packed a small cooler, and took a break half way through our visit for lunch under the pavilion. Once the kids tire of the motorcycle exhibit, they’ll find plenty more to do. – Caroline Mason

ellus Museum is jam-packed with learning disguised as fun, and Full Throttle: The Evolution + Design of the Motorcycle exhibit is no exception. My son, who is 8, was fascinated, from the eye appeal of the BMWs, to the simplicity of some of the side cars. Although a most of the exhibit focuses on vintage motorcycles, sidecars and mopeds, one of the most popular pieces was a motorwagon, an early “horseless carriage.” Many families commented on how appreciative they were that the vehicles we know and drive today have advanced so drastically from motorwagons, and children were made aware of the challenges a family could face traveling by that primitive – by today’s standards – vehicle. The 1948 Bell-47 Helicopter sat in the middle of the floor as a transition

Fitness and Fun at NinjaQuest
H
oping to keep my “cool mom” status with my 8- and 10-year-old boys for as long as possible, I agreed to give parkour a try. As a timesaver, I’ll share the definition of parkour, because I had to look it up: par·kour (noun): the sport of moving through an area, negotiating obstacles by running, jumping, and climbing. NinjaQuest Parkour & Ninja Warrior gym was recommended as the place for families. When we arrived, the welcoming staff provided a tour of the facility from the party room to the viewing room (where my husband firmly planted himself) to the fitness floor. We had signed up for the (mandatory) Intro to PK-Warrior class. Under the guidance of experienced Ninja Warrior/Parkour instructors, we were shepherded through the climbs and jumps of each station. Did I mention experienced instructors? One of our instructors was Ryan Stratis, from American Ninja

Warrior TV fame! I was relieved to learn that safety is a high priority at NinjaQuest with instructors watching closely until each station had been successfully negotiated. After the Intro class, we participated in open gym where I met a few families that liked to combine exercise with fun. As we worked our way through the stations, my kids especially enjoyed dusting their hands to tackle the Salmon Ladder, unstable bridge and more. It was an easy opportunity for me to let my boys lead me through the gym. As they completed an activity, they would coach me on how I should stand, grip or jump my way to success. NinjaQuest has achieved a loyal following, with families and groups traveling from surrounding states to work out. You may even get a glimpse of professional stunt performers honing their techniques as they prepare for TV or movie productions. Unlike other fitness facilities that dictate
goals, NinjaQuest allows you to set your own goal. Some come to have fun, some come to sharpen their thinking skills as they make decisions on how best to get from one area to another, while others dream of making it to American Ninja Warrior status. Several NinjaQuest members are kids who prefer making individual goals rather than participating in a team sport. No matter your personal, family or group goal, NinjaQuest is is dedicated to helping you succeed. Know Before You Go: Participants must be at least 8 years old. Open gym time, classes and private instruction available; walk-in open gym is $15 per visit with packages available for annual membership and classes.
