Atlanta’s winter weather is always unpredictable, and that seems particularly true for the month of February. Temperatures may be anywhere from a chilly 30 degrees to a balmy 65. No matter what the weather, families can find lots to do—enjoy a last-chance winter experience like snow tubing or ice skating, see a show, find trolls in the garden or visit the circus. February 17-20 is also the Great Backyard Bird Count, something I’ve always wanted to do. If you don’t get out to one of the local birding spots doing an organized count, you can still contribute by tallying the birds in your own backyard.
February is also Black History Month; we’re fortunate in Atlanta to be able to celebrate African American history and culture all year long. Parks and museums, art exhibits, murals and historic homes are all great ways for parents and kids to explore and learn about Black history. Whether you visit a historical site, attend a special event, or pass by one of the city’s beautiful murals, use it as a conversation starter. We all need to understand our past and encourage our kids to think about how they can make the world a better place.
Now is the time to start thinking about sending your kids off to summer camp. There are so many great camp experiences for kids, whether they’re interested in pursuing music or sports, exploring art, or taking a deep dive into the world of STEAM. Traditional summer camps, with plenty of outdoor time, classic games and activities, are as popular and relevant as ever—they get kids off their screens and back to the “basics” of having fun, making friends and connecting with nature. If you’re not ready for the overnight experience yet, there are just as many fun and interesting day camps around Atlanta. Whether you’re looking for a day or overnight camp, it’s important to start your search now.

It’s a LOVE Connection
Do you have a child who constantly wants to be attached to you? While it can be overwhelming because, let’s face it, we all need personal space, this could be your child’s way of seeking affection.
For kids who crave physical touch: n Instill good morning and good night hugs
n Hold hands when walking together or running errands
n Cuddle more
n Create a special handshake for the two of you n Stroke her hair or rub his back
Is it impossible to go to Target without your child asking for a new toy? The good news for your bank account is that it might not actually be about the thing; your child could be asking you for validation of your love, which doubles down on the old adage: It’s the thought that counts.
For gifts:
n Include a special something in his lunchbox every once and awhile
n When grocery shopping, let her pick out an item
n Create a photo album or book about him
n Pick wildflowers to leave in a vase in her room
by Emily Webb
As a parent, you love your child unconditionally. It’s that unspoken thing; that moment when you first see those tiny hands —all you want to do is love and protect them. And, during the baby stage, it’s pretty easy. But, as your child grows and develops a personality all her own, loving can become more complicated.
Take out the guess work by understanding his love language. Popularized by marriage counselor Gary Chapman, his bestseller “The 5 Love Languages” focuses on five ways people express love: physical touch, gifts, words of affirmation, acts of service and quality time. You can find more information on the love languages and take a free quiz online at 5lovelanguages.com.
Though originally designed for adults, you can take the quiz for your child to help understand her better. Pay attention to how your child shows you love—we often tend to offer affection in the way we wish to receive it. And, remember, your child’s love language may shift over time, so keep observing.
n Make sure to choose gifts that fit his interests
Does your child often express how they feel toward you and other family members? Return the sweet sentiments openly with your child to ensure they understand that you love them.
For words of affirmation:
n Tell her how proud you are of her accomplishments
n Share a sweet thing he did today with your partner at a time where he’ll hear it, too
n Skip the sarcasm, mockery and put-downs, even if teasing n Call her by a special nickname n Write love notes to stick in his lunchbox or in special spots in his bedroom

“Hug me, mama!”
“I want, I want!”
“Daddy, I love you!”
“I need help!”
Does your child often seek assistance doing tasks he can complete on his own? Chances are, he is looking for you to show you care through his help. When you do special things for your child, without making her reliant on you for developmentally-appropriate tasks, you can be sure she feels supported and loved.
For acts of service:
n Help him tie his shoes or make his bed
n Pick out her clothes for the next day
n Make his favorite meal, drink or dessert and bring it to him n Prepare a special bubble bath for her, or hold a spa night where you give her a manicure or pedicure
n Offer to help with homework or a school project
“Mom, Dad! Did you see that?!”
While you might be tired of watching your 4-year-old jump into the pool for the hundredth time, paying attention to your child in those little moments can go a long way. Remember to put down the phone and show you’re there for him.
For quality time: n Spend uninterrupted time doing an activity she chooses
Enjoy hobbies at home together: cook dinner or dessert, play a
Head to his favorite restaurant for a meal, just the two of you
No matter what love language your child connects with, when spending time with your child, here are some things to keep in mind:
n Try not to seem judgmental about his hobbies. If he starts to feel that you don’t care about what he loves, he may no longer want to share with you.
n Each age group will connect differently. Implement age-appropriate activities or conversations when spending alone time.
n When you’re interacting with your child, show up and be attentive. Put your phone away to just be in the present moment and let everything else go.
n If she asks you a question first, follow her lead by asking her the same question. Or if she asks for your opinion, start with “What do you think?”
n Play is the language of children and the primary way in which they learn. Play and laugh together to connect with your children.
n The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends active listening, which will help your child to feel like he can communicate with you. You can find more tips at healthychildren.org.

Simple Ways to Show Your Care 10 Valentine’s Day Delights 1 2 3 4 5
Slip a Valentine card under each kid’s pillow while they are sleeping. In the morning, tell them to check underneath. It makes for a fun surprise when they wake up, plus it will carry excitement and good vibes with them throughout the day.
For breakfast, cut out toast with a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Spread the heart shape with cream cheese and top with strawberry or raspberry jam. Place the piece of toast with the heart cut out on a plate and fill the center with red berries. Wet the rims of wine glasses or plastic cups then dip into pink or red sugar. Fill the cups with sparkling apple juice.
Draw a large, open heart on the bathroom mirror at kidheight with a dry erase marker. Write “I love” with an arrow pointing to the heart shape. When your child looks in the mirror to brush their teeth, his or her face will be in the heart!
Glam up lunch boxes by using your heart cookie cutter to shape sandwiches. If they aren’t into sandwiches, just opt for their favorite foods to show you care. Include a treat of Valentine candy and, of course, a love note.
Draw a trail of hearts on the driveway or sidewalk in red and pink chalk. Kids can follow the path by hopping from one to the next on the way to the car or bus stop.

doesn’t have to be about romantic love. It’s a great reason to spoil those you love with caring deeds and words of affection. Show your kids how much you love them with some of these simple, affordable yet meaningful ideas.
Show your kids how important it is to care for others. Visit a local nursing home and hand out flowers or Valentine cards to the residents. You could also drop off flowers or candy and a note for your neighbors.
Cook up a Valentine-themed dinner. Serve heart-shaped individual pizzas or top pizza with heart-shaped pepperoni. (Hint: cut the pepperoni pieces into hearts with a mini cookie cutter.) Many pizza companies offer heart shaped pizza for take-out or delivery in honor of the holiday as well. Serve with pink milk or sparkling juice.
During dinner, have each family member say why they love the person sitting next to them. Go around the table one way, then do it again in the opposite direction.
After dinner, cuddle up in PJs to watch a Valentine’s Day show such as “Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown;” “Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That: Hurray! It’s Valentine’s Day;” “Winnie the Pooh, A Valentine for You;” “WordWorld: My Fuzzy Valentine;” or “Madly Madagascar.”
Last but not least, don’t forget story time! Try one of these lovethemed books: “Queen of Hearts” by Mary Englebreit, “Love, Splat” by Rob Scotten, “Snowy Valentine” by David Peterson, “I Love You, Stinky Face” by Lisa McCourt or “Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day is Cool” by James Dean.

WHAT IS A CHARTER SCHOOL?
l Often, charter schools offer a specialized focus, such as STEM, performing arts or language.
l Charter schools are governed by an autonomous non-profit board of directors, and they have more autonomy and flexibility than a traditional public school.
l As public schools, they do not have admissions criteria beyond residency.
l In Georgia, there are state-authorized charter schools, which are authorized and monitored by the State Charter Schools Commission, and locally-authorized charter schools, which receive their charter from their local school district. State charter schools are usually open to the state, while locally-authorized schools have residency requirements.
l Start-up charter schools are often grouped by their authorizer, either at the local or state level.
l A conversion charter school is a charter school that was previously a traditional public school.
l There are currently 98 charter schools in Georgia.
l During the 2021-22 school year, 60,039 students were enrolled in Georgia charter schools.
l There are 48 charter systems in Georgia, according to the GADOE. A charter system is offered some flexibility from certain state rules and regulations, but they are not considered charter schools, as school boards must still approve the school’s practices.
l Charter school funding is still regulated by the school district or the state, although charter schools may be funded at a lower level than a traditional public school. Therefore, they may be in refurbished locations and without athletic facilities or bus transportation. State charter schools receive no local tax revenue.

Camp Guide 2023 Overnight
The Most Common “What-ifs” of Summer Camp
by Rebecca Hastings
One of the hardest things about sending kids to overnight camp is worrying about the things that could happen and knowing that you will not be there to fix everything or answer each question. There are so many scenarios to conjure:
What if they can’t sleep?
What if they get hurt?
What if they lose their towel?
As parents, our list of “what-ifs” is often longer than the forms you fill out to send them to camp. And, kids usually have their own “whatif” worries as well. While you can’t delete the “what-ifs” from your minds, you can help your children feel prepared (and put yourself a little more at ease) by having some “whatif” conversations before they leave.
n What if I get hurt?
Camp staff are trained to deal with all kinds of medical situations, from bandaids to bones and beyond. Talk about the staff they have available, and reassure your child that the nurse will contact you in an emergency.
n What if I get lost?
While the kids will likely spend time outdoors and be in new surroundings, kids are not left on their own. There are a lot of staff and other kids that will always be around. Plus, there are always people where the fun stuff is.
30 Atlanta Parent February 2023 atlantaparent.com Camp 2023
n What if I don’t make any friends?
Going somewhere new, where you don’t know anyone, can feel scary. “We work hard from the first moment that a child arrives at camp to welcome them into a community of full acceptance and true belonging,” said Matty Cook, Camp Director at Camp Southern Ground based in Fayetteville. “Through building a strong sense of belonging with their counselors and fellow campers something truly magical happens. Once this belonging takes hold, the people at camp become their people, camp becomes their place, and an environment that was foreign becomes their home away from home.” You should also remind your child that most of the other kids feel the same way, and that camp is full of fun ways to help them make friends.
n What if I lose my ______?
It could be anything. A towel, swimsuit, a favorite stuffed bear that no one knows is hidden under the pillow. Things will get lost at camp. The best bet is to talk to your counselor for help. Camp is full of extra things left behind by other kids, plus some just for this purpose. Kids don’t need to pretend or miss out on an activity if they lose something. There are always extras, a place to get things, or a friend who is willing to share.
n What if I miss home?
Your child won’t be the first and they won’t be the last to feel homesick. It’s one of the most common and expected struggles with going to camp. “Attending summer camp for the first time is such an exciting experience, but it can also be a little scary,” said Elizabeth Klespies from Camp Juliette Low in Cloudland, Ga. “Our trained counselor staff is ready to help campers work through their anxiety about being away from home. The combination of a warm, supportive environment and a busy schedule of activities helps most campers get over their anxieties very quickly—usually within a day or two.”
n What if someone tries to touch me or makes me feel uncomfortable?
Say something. Always. Find another adult, go to the nurse, tell the counselor or lifeguard. While incidents like this are not common, it is important to talk about how to handle them. Staying in groups is another great way to help foster a safe, comfortable environment.
n What if I’m scared of the dark?
It can get pretty dark at night at camp. Bringing flashlights is always a good starting place. Another great tip is to bring a reading light and a book, this way kids don’t have to tell anyone they are scared; they can just read before bed.
n What if I don’t want it to end?
This one is one of the most common problems kids face by the end of camp! They simply don’t want the fun to end. Remind them to share great memories with you, stay in touch with new friends, and be ready to sign up for next year!

Camp Countdown
You have a “short” list of overnight camps that are a good match for your child. Your child is excited for this summer experience. So, what happens now? Don’t get stressed! Here’s a timeline to prepare for summer camp.
n Now:
If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to finalize your selection for overnight camp. Some overnight camps are already filling up for popular summer weeks. Contact each camp on the list and talk with the director and other references to see if the camp is a match for your child. Ask around with friends to see if anyone else’s child is going to the same camp and try to select the same weeks so your child has a friendly face at overnight camp.
n Four Months Ahead:
Now that you’ve selected a camp, be sure to send in all registration forms and fees on time. You should also receive an information packet with details on what your child can expect from the camp experience. Your child may have to complete a physical. If so, schedule it early and mark it off your to do list. Be sure you understand protocols for sending any medication or if vaccines are required. Many overnight camps have COVID testing protocols in place prior to arrival at camp; check into those details as well.
n Two-Three Months Ahead:
Camp time will be here before you know it! Spend these months preparing your child for camp. If you can, visit the camp during an open house so your child can meet the
director and tour the facilities. Talk about any concerns your child might have and answer questions. Look at photos of the camp online if you can’t go in person. Tell your child what to expect in the daily schedule and be sure your child is capable of all the basics, including showering, making a bed, and packing to come home.
Now is also the time to start making travel arrangements and stocking up on supplies. Your camp should provide a list of clothes and toiletries your child will need during his session. The camp will also likely provide a list of items not allowed at camp.
n Just Weeks Away:
Summer is here! As your child starts her session, prepare yourself for her departure. It can be tough emotionally, especially the first summer. Alleviate your sadness by writing a few letters in advance, make a list of all important camp numbers and dates, and bookmark the camp’s photo webpage for easy access.
Also, plan a few fun things for while your child is at camp. Maybe you and your spouse can go on an adults-only vacation. Plan some staycation activities your child isn’t a fan of, but that you love. Or, use the time practically and knock out doctor’s appointments and other self-care needs.

Choosing the Best Overnight Camp
Your child is your best source of information when selecting a summer camp. With a variety of programs and activities available, overnight camp offers adventures to match a child’s interests.
Answer the following questions before you enroll your child in an overnight camp:
What locale do I want (for example, mountains, oceanfront, close to home)?
Do I want a traditional camp that gives my child a wide variety of experiences or do I want to select a specialty camp that focuses on a particular activity or set of skills?
Will my child feel more comfortable in a large or small camp?
How rustic do I want the camp to be?
How structured do I want the program to be? Does my child like to have lots of choice in the activity schedule?
Is my child ready to be away from home for an extended stay? This will help you to select either an overnight or day camp setting.
What session length is best for my child and our family plans for the summer?
How can I stay in touch with my child during camp? Does the camp allow mail, phone calls or email? Does the camp have parent visitation days?
How will the camp meet my child’s special dietary or physical needs?
What is my budget for camp tuition? Remember, some camps may offer financial aid.

Tooth Truths About the Tooth Fairy
August 22 is National Tooth Fairy Day.
The fairy’s average cash gift is $5.36, which is lower than the average in the South of $5.77.
The
She doesn’t always wear a dress or have wings. In some European and Spanishspeaking countries, the tooth fairy dresses as a mouse.
FAIRY FABULOUS!
Amp up the magic of the tooth fairy experience for your child. After all, they’re only young once!
l Ask the tooth fairy questions, get her advice and track lost teeth. Find the resources on her page at mouthhealthy.org and on deltadental.com.
l Leave a trail of glitter or confetti on the windowsill or night stand where the fairy visited in the night.
l Fold money left by the fairy into fun origami shapes—a heart, shirt, star or flower.
l Leave a tiny note or certificate from the fairy congratulating your child on their tooth loss. Decorate with glitter or colorful pens and stickers for a magical letter.
l Have your child leave a thank you note for the tooth fairy. It’s a great way to get them to practice their handwriting and express gratitude.
l Make a mini wand out of a straw or paper craft stick and felt. Be sure to add glitter and leave it with the tooth fairy’s gift or note. Your child will be in awe that she left her wand behind!
READ ALL ABOUT HER!
Cuddle up with a book about her for an evening activity. Here are some of our favorites:
l “How to Trick the Tooth Fairy” follows mischievous Kaylee as she tries to prank the tooth fairy. “The Night Before the Tooth Fairy” is a humorous twist on the classic Christmas poem. Tate is working her first night on the job in “Tooth Fairy in Training.”
DID THE TOOTH FAIRY MISS YOUR HOUSE?
The next morning (when you realize) have a good excuse at the ready—she got the wrong house, she had to have wing surgery, or she was in a meeting with Santa, the Easter Bunny, etc. Then, make a splash with her make-up visit, including an apology note with her reason for missing your stop.
GIFTS GALORE!
If you really want to make the tooth fairy shine, here are some ideas to try:
l Hold the Magic offers tiny gifts and stories to deliver a magical experience from the tooth fairy. Themed sets include Petite Princess with a miniature tea set, jewelry box and more; Little Prince comes with a violin, an artist palette and more; and each set comes with three tiny letters, three ready-to-gift bags and fairy dust. $29.95 each at holdthemagic.com.
l Gift them something you know they love. A pack of Pokemon cards or a Hatchimals egg personalizes the tooth fairy experience for your little one.
l Leave behind a tooth fairy pillow. It will make your job easier next time, plus it’s something cute for your child to keep. The AppleWhite store on Etsy has multiple cute fairy houses, tee-pees, beehives and tree houses.

EXPLORE SEA LIFE
Getting an up close and personal look at animals and habitats that are completely different from ours is intriguing for the whole family. Plus, it’s a great rain or shine activity for the weekend. With three amazing options nearby, it’s easy to spend the day at one of these venues learning more about aquatic animals and experiencing what life is like under the sea.
SeaQuest
At SeaQuest in DeKalb County, you can see a real live axolotl. For the non-Minecrafters in your family, SeaQuest is still a worthwhile destination with more than 1,200 animals from five continents. While you can interact with land animals like Bengal cats, iguanas and wallabies, fish are the focus. Huge tanks are filled with sea rays, turtles and a wide variety of fish. If you want a kiss from a fish, opt for the snorkel experience which puts you in the water with coastal sharks, rays and hundreds of fish! Purchase the Ultimate Adventure Bundle for animal interactions, hands-on feeding experiences and an up close and personal look at a variety of ecosystems. 8020 Mall Pkwy., Stonecrest. 404-793-2930. $16.99; ages 2-11, $10.99; ages 1 and younger, free. visitseaquest.com/stonecrest
Georgia Aquarium

Thanks to its size, the Georgia Aquarium offers several unique experiences, including the Dolphin Presentation, Sea Lion Show and the new Aquanat Adventure: A Discovery Zone. This kidcentric area features fresh water and marine habitats, scientific research, aquatic and marine sciences careers and more. Plus, with a special ticket, you can immerse yourself in the Ocean Voyager exhibit for a chance to swim with whale sharks. For the price of a single-day ticket, the aquarium is offering a new Resident Pass (through Feb. 15) for unlimited general admission for all of 2023. 5 REASONS TO TAKE A SKI VACATION AT COPPER MOUNTAIN SKI RESORT
GET YOUR SKI ON
Copper Mountain has 21% beginner terrain and a chair lift that services those beginner runs. Kids can ski all day, then ski right over to the T-Rex Grill just off the slopes for lunch. Green Acres is their beginning ski area, where you can start on your own if not taking lessons and need a quieter area away from the ski school. Green Acres Snow play and sledding zone also provides an area where you can bring your own sled and play in the snow. They also offer many trails and lifts for more advanced skiers to explore.
GREAT LESSONS
Private lessons from the Ski and Ride School helped our kids gain confidence on the ski trails. The school’s full day option is reasonably priced. They also offer private lessons for you and as a family.
FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES
Our kids still talk about the Rocky Mountain Coaster at Copper Mountain, and we only got to go down it once! This Tubing Hill is a huge, topsy turvy hour of fun. Choose your spin level of tolerance and they will send you off sliding down. Kids will also love finding their way through the free Snow Maze. Another neat activity is the Barn at Woodward —a 19,400 square-foot indoor training facility for snowboard, ski, skateboard, BMX, trampoline and tumbling disciplines. They offer a tots tumbling and trampoline time. Plus, kids ages 7 and older can explore the barn with a parent after an introduction session.
SMALLER RESORT VIBE
Copper Mountain has a shuttle to easily take you around the three villages at the resort: Center, East and West. Center Village has a cute town at the bottom of the main ski slope. It has gift shops, restaurant, a market and more.
DELICIOUS EATS
Center Village has a variety of great dining options to keep your family happy. Ten Mile Tavern was our favorite restaurant. They have the largest pretzel you’ve ever eaten, burgers, salads and more. Make sure you don’t miss Sugar Lips Mini Donuts—a yummy treat!
— Laura Powell
Copper Mountain offers a variety of condos, townhomes, and the Element 29 hotel. We stayed in a condo to have the option of a kitchen and room to spread out. Look for lodging deals, like booking two nights, and get the third for free. Plus, Kids Ski Free with the purchase of adult tickets.
