Publisher’s Note Oh, How We Love Summer!

Pregnant & looking for ways to relax? We have the answer! 60, 75 or 90 minute massage sessions!

MASSAGE SPECIALTIES • Pregnancy • Postpartum • Fertility • Neuromuscular

It’s only July, but most of us are already thinking about back-to-school plans. It’s hard to believe some kids will be starting school by the end of the month, and the rest will join them in early August. So by mid-month, families will be starting to change their schedules, getting the kids ready for bed a little earlier, and starting to think about back-to-school shopping. You’ll find plenty of ideas in this month’s issue for family fun before the school bells start ringing and the frantic mornings begin. Of course, our Family Fun Guide is chocked full: The best places to celebrate July 4th with parades, fireworks and more (page 61); a day trip to ride the rapids on the Chattooga (page 53); serenity and adventures with “Robin Hood” at Serenbe (page 57), or listening to the magic of sound with an exhibit inspired by the Blue Man Group at Children’s Museum of Atlanta (page 48). Zoo Atlanta is fun to explore anytime of the year but especially in summer, and be sure to check out the zoo’s latest attraction, the Treetop Trail (page 50) Another way to play with the kids – plan a block party and get to know your neighbors. Our how-to story, Rock the Block (page 12), has ideas for games and activities to make it a memorable event. At least once this summer, give yourself a break from the grill and try one of Atlanta Parent’s favorite hamburger and hot dog places – just order a great meal, and relax (page 54). As the school year creeps ever closer, you still have time to Sneak Learning into Summer with These Fun Projects (page 38). Our story will get you started with simple projects you can do with the kids, fun with painting, art and building or developing a blog, writing a story or taking part in volunteer service to help others. A side benefit of these pursuits is they use reading, math and critical thinking skills to help kids brush up on what they learned in class last year before the new school year begins. Families still have plenty to time to wrap up the summer with a bang – so let’s get out and do it!

ROCK THE BLOCK: Fun Ideas for a Block Party n

n

n

by Pam Molnar

We drive to and from work, kid activities and household errands with no more than a vague wave to our neighbors. Wouldn’t it be nice to get to know the people who share our street? A block party is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening with food, entertainment and of course, the neighbors. Here’s how to organize it. Location, Location! You’ll need to get the neighborhood organized and decide whether you’ll host the party on your lawn or if it will be a joint venture with your next-door neighbors or a progressive party with several neighbors hosting. If you live on a cul-de-sac, consider whether the party can be at the end of the street.

Let’s Eat! The easiest plan is a potluck where everyone brings a dish to share. To make sure you have everything you need, put your event on SignUp Genius. The guests can pick from a list of items you need – a salad, mustard and ketchup, dessert – without duplication. Guests can bring their drinks in a personal cooler – easiest for the hosts.

Go Play in the Yard: If several neighbors

Take a Collection: This is a great opportunity to give back to your community. Call your local food bank and see which items they need the most. Collect new and gently used school supplies for needy families. You can even help the furry friends of the community by collecting used towels and blankets for the animal shelter.

What can you Borrow? Most of the basic items needed for a block party can be found in one’s own garage. Ask everyone to bring their tables and chairs, coolers and lawn games. Pull out the kiddy pools, sprinklers and water guns. Determine who has tents, grills and other tailgating items.

are hosting, set up each yard with a different outdoor game. Suggestions include Bocce, yard Twister, croquet, lawn tic tac toe, volleyball, badminton, horse shoes, bean bags or ladder golf. Bring out the hula hoops, jump ropes and balls of all sizes. You can also make a four square game with chalk or tape on the driveway or street.

What Should you Rent? If you have a large enough

Fun Stations: Set up self-serve stations

Night Time Fun: When the sun goes down, your party

offering sidewalk chalk, bubbles and temporary tattoos. Enlist some of the teens on the block to help with face painting. Create a simple background for selfies and group photos. Provide a large frame, sunglasses, boas and hats to be used as props.

will need a little more light. Bring out the fire pit and make s’mores. Use glow-in-the-dark sidewalk chalk to make cool art. Create a glow-in-the-dark scavenger hunt by hiding glow sticks in neighborhood bushes and trees. Set up a family-friendly movie to be shown on the side of the house or garage door.

group, you can split the cost to rent a bounce house, a dunk tank, a mobile zip line or carnival games. You can also rent food machines such as a popcorn machine, cotton candy maker or a snow cone machine. If there are small children at your block party, you might want to rent a character costume to meet and greet the kids.

RAIN PLAN The easiest thing to do is to turn your outdoor block party into a Progressive Garage Party. Don’t go overboard. Simply pull out the cars and sweep up the floor. No one cares if you have bikes hanging from the ceiling or rakes hanging on the wall. It’s a garage! Move the carnival games into garages that are next to each other. Set up your art station, games and photo booth at a few other houses. Food and drinks can be stored across the street from the garage where the tables are set up to eat. You can even set up a tent outside as long as the rain is just a gentle downfall. Flexibility is key and kids will love the chance to run from house to house in the rain.

SNEAK LEARNING INTO SUMMER WITH THESE FUN PROJECTS

l  Do a painting project

Projects that include lots of paint and several days to finish a painting simply do not happen all that often during the school year. Summer is a great time to let your kids enjoy the feel of a paintbrush in hand and create a piece of original art. Get them a large surface to paint on (canvas or wood), paint and brushes, and then let them look for inspiration. Home improvement shows and magazines are great resources for ideas for paintings you can do at home. Kids can also paint fabric, dishes, or even old furniture that could use a facelift.

l  Plan a cooking or baking day

Let your kids plan a meal for you and your family. They can look through cookbooks and choose recipes they would like to make, determine the ingredients needed, shop, prepare the meal and serve it.

by Sara Marchessault

M

any metro kids head back to the classroom between July 31 and Aug. 8 – back to routines, homework and regular schedules. It’s time to pull out ideas you may have had about cool stuff to do with your kids – or let your kids do on their own – and pump a little zest into the rest of summer break. It’s also a great time to refresh the skills your kids learned last year and get them ready for the challenges ahead. Here are a few fun ideas that also require reading, following direction, solving problems, math, and even spatial reasoning. Not only will one of these cool projects get kids moving and grooving for the last days of summer, it can get them back into the routine of thinking like a student. 38 Atlanta Parent    July 2017

l  Design and build something

What can your kids construct? Can they build an obstacle course in the backyard? Bridges for toy cars to ride over kiddie pools? Boats to race down a nearby creek? This can be as complicated as original designs or as simple as a craft kit from a local hobby store. Encourage conversations about the decision-making during building. When it’s time to test the finished product, video tape the experience, interview the builder to get a live comment about how it went, and if desired, share with family and friends.

l  Sort and preserve photos

Did your summer include a vacation? Do you have a collection of pictures, printed or digital, that you would love to see organized into a scrapbook, photo album, or printed photo book? Photo storage and memory preservation projects can be completed with or without supervision. Invite your kids to create a piece of art that reflects a shared memory and the family can enjoy for years to come.

l  Write and publish an original story

From a young age, we introduce children to the magic of reading. Many of them fall in love with stories and start making their own books. These handmade books might start with stapling together pictures and progress to writing, editing and typing. To take this even further, learn to self-publish an original book using an on-demand print service. The process of writing and editing an original story and learning how to selfpublish takes time. Kids practice skills learned in school while completing a large project with lots of steps.

l  Take a kid-planned trip

Ready to put some of those geography and math skills to work? Invite your child to plan a day trip for the family. Planning a trip can include exploring with a map, choosing a location, deciding on a budget, determining the best way to travel and tracking expenses on the trip. Cont’d on page 40

SNEAK LEARNING INTO SUMMER WITH THESE FUN PROJECTS

l  Become an expert

Is your kid interested in bugs? Bears? Have you got a kid obsessed with flight? Invite your child to learn about something new, to take notes on that something, and to create a display or report. This might be the perfect time to learn a new software, such as PowerPoint or Keynotes or Prezi.

l  Engage in a

service project

This can be as simple as helping the elderly neighbor by weeding and maintaining her flower beds. How about cleaning up trash in the park or working with younger kids who need help learning to read? Service is a wonderful way to give back, as well as to practice the skills used in school.

l  Publish a blog or vlog

(video based blog)

Maintaining a blog or vlog lets kids practice communication skills. Blogs or vlogs can be topic based, where the publisher posts articles or videos on one specific topic, or they can be a public journal that shares the everyday adventures or observations of the creator’s life. Many are some of each. To get started, search online for “free blog sites” to see several choices. By maintaining a blog or vlog, kids can practice writing, editing and honing their message. With video this would also include speaking and using video recording equipment. This requires communication and technical skills, and you can even bring math into play by studying the analytics of a blog.

l  Make something to sell

Do you have a budding entrepreneur in your midst? What can they make to sell? I know an 11-year old girl who makes stuffed animals and sells them through a local retailer. She is learning about quality, buying supplies to make her product, charging enough to cover her cost and labor, and tracking her profits. What does your child make, or would they like to make, that they could make well enough to sell? This can be a practice in creativity that grows into real-life application of math skills. 40 Atlanta Parent    July 2017

S

ugar Hill Christian Academy currently serves students 12 months through 10th grade. They will be adding 11th grade Fall 2018 and 12th grade Fall 2019. Their mission is to offer an excellent academic and Christian education, while developing a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ. At Sugar Hill Christian Academy they believe a successful education is only met by partnering with the parents during these important formative and academic years. Together, they will pray for, lift up and support your child to grow in character and faith and to be successful in the modern world while living as Disciples of Christ. Students begin each day by raising their hearts and voices to God in praise and worship. Character education and devotions are combined with song and prayer to start the day. Students also have a daily enrichment period that rotates weekly through the following subjects: art, computer lab, music, P.E. and Spanish. Academy students also visit the school library weekly and are encouraged to participate in Accelerated Reader. SHCA middle school and high school students compete with area schools in basketball, soccer, cross country, tennis and volleyball through Lanier Christian Athletic Conference (LCAC). he Suzuki School, located at three campuses in Atlanta, is a SACS-accredited private preschool for children between 3 months and 6 years of age. Founded in 1976, The Suzuki School is based on the philosophy and teaching methods of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki and Maria Montessori, whose work in the education of young children is internationally recognized. The Suzuki philosophy affirms that learning begins at birth. The school’s mission is to develop in young children a lifelong love of learning by nurturing each child’s natural talent and ability in partnership with the parents. A low student/teacher ratio assures that each child receives focused attention from degreed teachers in a collaborative setting. Because the physical environment is so important in both of these teaching philosophies, the school’s three facilities, designed by nationally-known architectural firms, utilize color, art, nature, and music to stimulate young minds, while the inside of the classroom is designed to stimulate the independence and growth of each child. Applications are accepted throughout the year. For more detailed information about the Suzuki School, please visit the website at www.suzukischool.com, or contact the Admissions Director at 404-841-3939.

15 Genius

Tips for Back to School by Christa Melnyk Hines

Every parent has that one trick that helps make life just a little simpler in the midst of a hectic school year. Here are some of the best. n  Plan your meals. Steer clear of the drive-thru on hectic evenings by taking 10 minutes each weekend to plan simple meals for the week. With a complete grocery list in hand, head to the store to purchase everything you’ll need. To further simplify planning, Gina Nichols, a mom of four and a Wildtree freezer meal consultant, recommends prepping food when you get home from the store, filing favorite recipes for easy reference and maintaining a wellstocked pantry. Theme nights like pasta on Mondays, tacos on Tuesday, etc., can also help. Ask your family for their suggestions. n  Schedule grocery delivery. Many grocery stores now offer online ordering and delivery services, helpful for families who are pressed for time, dislike grocery shopping or struggle to stick to a budget when there. n  Stock the freezer. Stash your freezer with healthy casseroles, soups, sauces and crockpot meals to make dinnertime a no-brainer on busy weeknights. “Try to make your cooking always do double duty. Make a little extra of everything and if you don’t want it right away, freeze it,” Nichols says. n  Set up a master calendar. Post a whiteboard with the week’s calendar to help everyone in the family know what to expect in the coming week. Use color-coded dry erase markers for each family member’s activities and cold or hot lunch preferences.

n  Share the daily action plan. Laurie Loudenback hands her kids, ages 10 and 12, a clipboard each morning which includes the day’s schedule, chores, and screen time limits. “This chart has been pretty lifechanging,” says Loudenback, whose husband Scott designed it. “The first thing the kids say in the morning is ‘I need my chart.’” n  Hold family meetings. Alexis Sanchez, mom of four, says she gathers her family on Sunday nights to discuss the week ahead, including upcoming activities and “to brainstorm any kinks” that need to be worked out in the schedule. n  Spruce up backpacks. Extend the life of a much-loved backpack by giving it a back-to-school cleaning. Depending on the material, backpacks can generally be hand washed, spot cleaned or placed in a laundry bag or pillow case and run through the washing machine. Be sure to empty out all of the pockets and vacuum out crumbs beforehand. If you hand wash it, soak it in warm water for 15 minutes with a teaspoon of laundry detergent. Rinse well and air dry.

n  Establish a snack/brown bag lunch station. Designate a shelf in your kitchen or pantry for parentapproved snacks and lunch items. Tape a list inside the cupboard door with lunch ideas. On Sundays, pre-pack snacks that kids can easily grab like trail mix, pretzels, granola bars or cereal. Stock the refrigerator with fruits and veggies that have been pre-washed/cut, as well as cheese and yogurt sticks. To save time in the mornings, help your children make their lunches and pack their snacks the night before. 42 Atlanta Parent    July 2017

atlantaparent.com

n  Manage paperwork. Everyday after school, Sanchez says, “we have a mandatory ‘empty your book bag’ rule.” Her children file important documents like those that need to be signed by a parent into an office divider. Label a folder with the name of your child and school year to easily collect artwork and other keepsakes throughout the year. Sanchez keeps her folders in a plastic file box. n  Create a homework station. Designate a well-lit place in your home where homework can be completed without distractions. Create a homework caddy stocked with notebook paper, pens, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, rulers, and highlighters – anything your child might need to complete an assignment. n  Make a homework plan. If your child struggles with organization, go through their backpack together. Make a stack for the night’s homework and help your child prioritize what needs to be completed first. Use a calendar to help kids plan long-term assignments. n  Use a timer. If your child gets overwhelmed by lengthy math worksheets or other difficult assignments, try using a timer like the Time Timer app and set a goal. For example, after he completes 10 problems, take a break for a quick snack. “Frequent breaks are important in helping students and their parents with homework,” says Amber Dawkins, a former teacher and a mom to a 4-year-old son.

n  Attend back-to-school functions. Help your child get back into the school groove by attending school orientations, ice cream socials or sneak-peeks. “Even reconnecting with one or two friends or meeting a teacher in person before the first day of school can make a difference to a child,” Dawkins says. n  Connect in a memorable way. Be ready to meet a few new parents at back-toschool functions who you’ll want to reconnect with later. Kristal Ronnebaum, mom of two, suggests handing out a family calling card. “It’s a method of sharing your contact information in a fun and creative way,” Ronnebaum says. You can also hand the card to babysitters, carpool drivers and new neighbors (attached to a small housewarming gift). n  Encourage rest. A successful school year requires quality sleep. “Start edging those bedtimes back a week or two in advance of school starting,” Dawkins says. Maintain a regular evening routine that helps your child unwind before bed, such as a warm bath or shower and reading time. Also, build unstructured time into your child’s weekly schedule for playing with friends and pursuing creative endeavors.

BLUE MAN GROUP: Making Waves

W

aves are everywhere! At least sound waves are everywhere and your child can learn more about the basics of sound in an exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta inspired and created by the Blue Man Group. My family really enjoyed “A Sound Connection,” the mini-musical that sparked the children’s interest in the exhibit. Actors dressed as an alien and a caveman encouraged the children to make common animal sounds found in the forest. My preschooler Caleb did a fine impression of a frog. All the segments featured throughout the exhibit were colorful and stimulating for children ages 3-8 years. One of the most interesting elements of the exhibit is the PVC pipes that make sounds and perform just like the Blue Man Group. All the school-aged children enjoyed playing with the PVC pipes, which were accompanied with userfriendly sheet music to play common tunes like “Ode to Joy.” “Look mommy, my belly is a drum,” Caleb said, as we visited the “You’re a Musical Instrument” segment of the exhibit. It has an interactive video about beating your belly like a drum. All the children and parents liked using their senses to feel and see sound waves. From this exhibit, children will learn elements of sound such as moving waves faster for a higher frequency of sounds, building better sounds with pitch and timbre, and creating variations of sounds with their voices and the PVC trombone.

A DAY AT THE ZOO: Roar, Splash and Soar!

It is hard to fit everything Zoo Atlanta offers into a day. Get up-close with all kinds of animals, from colorful flamingos to playful pandas and everything in between. Don’t miss lots of opportunities to play, including the new Treetop Trail.

Photos / Zoo Atlanta

Must-See Animals n  Giant Pandas: Ya Lun and Xi Lun, the only twin pandas in the United States, will be cavorting all summer in their climate controlled play area.

n  Giraffes: At regular feeding times, families can stand on Twiga Terrace, eye-to-eye with the Zoo’s herd, and give them lettuce leaves (purchase for $3).

n  Western Lowland Gorillas: The Zoo is home to the largest population in North America, family groups in five natural habitats. See baby gorillas, and Ozzie the world’s oldest living gorilla at age 56.

n  African Elephants: Kelly and Tara are always up to something. Kelly loves to throw mud on herself and scrape bark off the logs in her habitat for a snack, and she occasionally paints.

n  Reptiles: The Zoo’s Scaly Slimy Spectacular has kids oohing and aahing at snakes, lizards, turtles, alligators and other creatures that slither and snap.

More Ways to Learn The Zoo offers several educational opportunities to bring the classroom outdoors. Take in a wildlife presentation, meet the animals, or spend the night at the Zoo. n  Zookeeper Talks: At scheduled times, zookeepers tell stories about the animals they care for and share fun facts about their diets or behaviors. (Free with admission.) n  Animal Tales: Storybook Reading: Storytime features different animals each month and is followed by a tactile experience such as touching animal artifacts. (Free with admission; 2 p.m. Mon. and Tue., 11 a.m. Wed.) n  Wild Encounters: Get up close with the zoo’s pandas, elephants, warthogs, lemurs, lions and Aldabra Tortoise on zookeeper-led tours at scheduled times. (Additional costs, ranging from $35-$160 per person; must book in advance. Age limit applies to Wild Lion Encounter) n  Adventure Cubs: On the first Wednesday of each month and some Saturdays, 10-11 a.m., toddlers ages 3-4 can go on a zoo tour and learn about animals. (Register in advance; $24 for one adult/child pair includes Zoo admission. Zoo also offers Stroller Cubs for kids age 2 and younger.) n  Family NightCrawlers: Spend the night at the zoo with scavenger hunts and behind-the-scenes peeks at the animals. (Upcoming dates: Panda Party July 8, Outrageous Orangutans Aug. 12 and Boo at the Zoo! Oct. 21 are $65 per person; Tusks at Dusk NightCrawler Sept. 9 is $115 per person)

Swing from the

TREETOP TRAIL! by Sherry V. Crawley

P

retend you are a swinging monkey, a climbing bear and a hanging sloth at Zoo Atlanta’s newest attraction, Treetop Trail, presented by Kaiser Permanente. This just-scary-enough-to-be-fun adventure is situated atop the playground near the main gate, and it is shaded underneath some trees so kids really feel like they are in the canopy. Each child (or adult – we saw a few!) is safely strapped into a harness that connects to overhead rails, and they are then free to explore this soaring play structure. We tried out Treetop Trail with two 8-year-olds, and they both declared it, “awesome!” One favorite was the zip line at the very tiptop, “because it felt amazing – like I was flying through the trees like a bird.” Another highlight for our boys was a section that only had knotted ropes to grip. They reported that the view from the top was cool and that it made them think about how animals move around in nature. It was fun (and only slightly terrifying) watching them bravely pick their way across a swinging rope bridge, carefully maneuvering from step to step to make their way around the different parts of the structure. Every kid there was having a blast. Staff members were on hand to help out, and when we visited there were only about 10 people on the trail so the kids got to play for a good long time. The hardest part was getting them down! They celebrated with a sticker at the end. If the Zoo is not in your regular family rotation, this additional experience is a reason to head over to Grant Park this summer. Information: Treetop Trail admission is $13.95 in addition to Zoo admission. A waiver must be completed by each participant or guardian. This experience is for Zoo visitors of all ages, but children must be 48 inches tall to participate without an adult chaperone. Wear close-heeled shoes – no flip flops or open sandals allowed. Treetop Trail is open daily with last ticket sold at 4 p.m.

More Ways to Play End a day at the Zoo playing on one of the two playgrounds or splash pad, and make sure to catch a ride on the carousel or train.

The Details

n  KIDZone and Naked Mole Rat Playgrounds: Kids play, climb, slide and burn off energy in KIDZone and explore tunnels like a naked mole rat in the other. n  Splash Fountain: Playing in the spray is a perfect way to cool off on a hot day. Fountain presented by Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority. n  Petting Zoo: It’s fun to reach out and touch goats, sheep and other critters. n  Carousel: The Endangered Species Carousel has 38 carved wooden animals, but no horses.

Photo/ Zoo Atlanta

n  Zoo Train: This replica of an 1863 locomotive is one of the Zoo’s most popular attractions.

n  Rock Wall: Kids can test strength and stamina and climb to new heights – safely.

n  Canopy Climber: Whee! Climb up through a canopy and slide down.

(The Zoo Train, Rock Wall, Carousel and Canopy Climber each cost $3, or buy an all-day unlimited rides wristband for $9.)

RAFT THE CHATTOOGA for a Full Day of Family Fun

T

ime flies. Our oldest daughter starts high school in the fall and the realization that we have four more years before she graduates got me thinking … We need to go on trips. We need to make more family memories together. The Nantahala Outdoor Center’s whitewater rafting trip on the Chattooga River was our first family adventure after that epiphany. The Chattooga is about two hours from Atlanta with gorgeous scenery, easy to moderate whitewater, numerous swimming holes and the infamous Class IV “Bull Sluice” rapid. When we arrived at NOC, our friendly and engaging guide, Dylan, led us through river and rafting safety guidelines before we geared up and headed to the river. The trip started with serene and smaller rapids working up to the more challenging ones. The guides have named all sections of the river from start to finish including “George Washington’s Nose” (a rock amidst rapids that is indeed nose-shaped with markings like The Details nostrils). He told my daughters, Georgia Anne, 13, and Nantahala Outdoor Center Sarah, 10, to push it with a paddle and then he said, Chattooga River Section III “Ew, you just picked GW’s nose!” Whitewater Rafting Adventure The highlight of the trip was our plunge down 828-785-4990; noc.com Bull Sluice, a class IV rapid where we got soaked! n  Cost: $99.99 per person Our guides let us take turns jumping off rocks into (must be ages 8 or older). Trip is the lower section of the rapid. We stopped for games five to six hours and includes a and swimming and a delicious riverside lunch. It was riverside lunch. an amazing spread with sandwich bread, turkey, ham, roast beef, peanut butter and jelly, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles, cream cheese, olives, carrots, celery, trail mix, Oreo cookies, lemonade and water. The rafting trip is one of those family memories we will talk about for years to come. n  Know Before You Go: To be more comfortable on this adventure, wear water shoes or outdoor sport-type sandals and a pair of shorts over a bathing suit, and bring a change of dry clothes for afterwards. Be sure to use plenty of sunscreen. Rafters do some light hiking carrying paddles and some smaller gear to get to the river. –  Becky Cooper atlantaparent.com

Make a Day of It at Serenbe

Who can resist serene surroundings with plenty of adventure for kids and adults? Not us. “Robin Hood” at Serenbe Playhouse by Lauren Townsend Our kids were cheering, “Hip, Hip, Huzzah!” well after we left the performance. “Robin Hood” is easily the most entertaining family-friendly play we’ve seen with the kids. Peyton, 7, and Cricket, 4, were both enthralled. The play is set in the woods, where families are greeted by cast members. Popcorn and gold chocolate coins, as well as mimosas, can be purchased upon arrival. Families can sit together on benches or the kids can elect to sit on blankets up front. The cast interacts with the children and there is enough adult humor (not crass, just over heads of young kids) that parents or grandparents will enjoy the show. The cast zip lines back and forth throughout the production and fight scenes are entertaining, not frightening. The show runs just under an hour and afterward, guests are invited to interact with the cast and participate in their own obstacle course. Because the show is set outside in the forest, there were no issues that sometimes arise when taking children to the theater such as darkness, loud sound systems or flashing lights. Know Before You Go: A portable toilet and bug spray are provided, but taking care of both before you leave home is a good idea. The drive to Serenbe was close to an hour from North Atlanta, but the kids agreed that it was well worth it.

A Great Place for Lunch If you visit Serenbe, you must have lunch at the Blue Eyed Daisy. The menu is farm-to-table and offers great, moderately priced options for everyone ($8.99-$11.99). From the $5.99 kids’ menu, one child had grilled chicken strips and pasta salad, while the other had tasty mac and cheese. My husband Lynn and I split the pimento cheese snack, which came with fresh veggies and artisanal crackers, as well as the Blue Eyed Burger, a Grass fed Burger topped with balsamic caramelized onions, blue cheese, arugula and tomato. We grabbed some cookies for the road, then circled back for another pecan icebox cookie.

Fun at Historic Banning Mills After seeing “Robin Hood,” your kids might be captivated by the idea of zip lining. They can try it at Historic Banning Mills if they are 8 years old or older. The Level 1 Forest/Woodlands tour takes about 1 ½ to 2 hours, or plan to stay the night at the resort and take a longer zip lining adventure. Zip lining tours start at $49 per person. Our kids aren’t quite old enough for zip lining, but next time we go to Serenbe for a play, we hope to enjoy horseback riding.

THE SUN, THE MOON & THE STARS A meteor shower and a total solar eclipse make for some fantastic sky viewing in August.

58 Atlanta Parent    July 2017

Total Solar Eclipse Aug. 21

This rare event doesn’t occur often – the earth, sun and moon perfectly line up and, for a moment, the moon will completely block the sun. According to Dr. James Sowell, an astronomer at the School of Physics at Georgia Tech University, “An almost total eclipse passed over Atlanta in 1984, and a partial eclipse was visible in 1998.” The first point of contact will be seen in Lincoln Beach, Ore. at 9:05 a.m. PDT and it will cross through the United States until it reaches Charleston, S.C. at 2:48 p.m. EDT. Visit eclipse2017.nasa.gov for more information. Sowell says the best local point to view the eclipse is the northeast corner of Georgia, in places such as Clayton, Blairsville or Hiawassee. Visit eclipse2017.org/2017/states/ GA.htm for the complete map. Other great vantage points include Tennessee and Kentucky. “The answer boils down to which sites are clear,” Sowell says. The Aug. 21 total solar eclipse is a must-see because the same path will not occur for some time. “In order for the path of totality to be extremely close to the same spot, it is about 360 to 400 years. But in the next 35 years, there are only three total solar eclipses that will cross the U.S.,” Sowell says. Remember: The only safe way to look directly towards the uneclipsed or partially-eclipsed sun is through specialpurpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses.” NASA suggests these brands: Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics, Thousand Oaks Optical and TSE 17.
