Publisher’s Note Summer’s Going Fast – Play with Your Family Being a parent can be a serious business. That’s why it’s so important to have fun with your kids when you get the chance. This month’s issue is packed with ideas for doing just that, starting with our “Top 10 Lists for Everything Family” (Page 10). It’s a family resource you can use all year long to find some of the best places in Atlanta to entertain your family, from restaurants to museums to places to splash around, and everything in between. You’ll also find help with some of the more serious aspects of being a family – recommended health care providers, good places for childcare, where to shop, a guide to schools and more. We want you to make the most of your summer with the kids this year, whether you’ll be staying in town and becoming hometown tourists or heading to a beach for fun in the sun. Tourists-at-home will love some of the special events this summer, including “Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic” at the High Museum of Art (Page 56 )and the musical “Peter Pan” at the Serenbe Playhouse (Page 59). When you need to get out of town, our guide to nearby beaches on Page 55 will help you decide where to go. And though it’s still July, some families are already looking to the start of the next school year – opening day for some metro school districts is Aug. 1. With that in mind, read our story “Home Schooling: A Parent’s Guide” (Page 44) to see if teaching your kids at home is something you should consider. How’s your summer going so far? Drop us a line at Facebook. com/AtlantaParentMagazine and tell us about the fun adventures with your family.

HOME SCHOOLING: A Parent’s Guide

by Amanda Miller Allen

T

wenty years ago, many parents dismissed the idea of homeschooling as too difficult. Today, not so much. About 2 million school-age children in the United States are homeschooled, and their numbers have doubled since 1999. In Georgia, about 60,000 students learn at home. While these numbers are only about 3 percent of all students, many families planning their child’s education now consider whether homeschooling, or a hybrid of homeschooling and classes at a private or public school or online school, is the right choice. “All of us want to provide the best education for our child,” says Mark St. Denis, director of the Atlanta Learning Academy and the Southeast Homeschool Expo, who was homeschooled along with five siblings and a cousin. “We had the opportunity to learn everything – guitar, gardening, chemistry, everything – our parents wanted to provide the broadest education possible.” Today’s homeschooling parents, he says, have many more resources to help them succeed. These include hybrid schools such as The King’s Academy, learning centers such as Living Science Homeschool Study Center, online public schools that can provide course work, organizations such as the Georgia Homeschool Education Association, tutoring services and more. What can homeschooling offer your family? Read on for the pros and cons. 44 Atlanta Parent    July 2018

Advantages n  Individualized learning. Kids who grasp a concept or topic can move on in their studies, not wait for their classmates to catch up. They can delve deeply into subjects that interest them, from history to science or math, writing or literature. They benefit from one-on-one teaching. n  More flexibility. Course work doesn’t have to start at 8:30 and end at 3, five days a week. Families can take a break for a vacation when other kids are in school, or start class at 10, or schedule around medical appointments, or take educational field trips on weekdays, or do course work on Saturdays or Sundays, as long as they stay within the Georgia Department of Education guidelines. n  A more controlled environment. Some families choose homeschooling to instill religious or moral values, one of the primary reasons of pioneering homeschool families. Recent surveys suggest families are citing other reasons such as the school environment, bullying and safety, or opting out of traditional schools because of children with special needs.

Basic Requirements for Home Schooling n  Home-school parents or guardians in Georgia must submit a “Declaration of Intent” to home school annually to the Georgia Department of Education by Sept. 1 or within 30 days of starting to a home school program. n  They must provide a basic academic educational program which includes mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Reading. n  Each family must decide which curriculum is best for their child and purchase the curriculum on their own. n  Parents or guardians must have at least a high school diploma or GED. For a complete list of rules and other information, visit gadoe.org.

Homeschooling for Beginners There is no perfect way to homeschool. Every family has to do what’s right for their educational needs and schedule. But you can avoid these common mistakes that many new homeschooling moms and dads make. n  Don’t try to make home like school. No need to provide Smartboard, uniforms and a never-changing schedule. When the teacher is a parent, things are very different and require more flexibility. n  Ditch the desks. It’s not necessary to spend countless hours doing schoolwork at a desk. Consider shorter chunks of teaching/learning time for each child. Take an occasional day off to visit the zoo, go on a nature walk, hit the library, watch a documentary or snuggle up and read. Include the kids in real-world things like errands, cooking, chores and finances. n  Don’t pay a lot for curriculum. With so many free resources like ABCMouse.com, Khan Academy and the public library, there’s no reason for curriculum to be expensive (especially at the elementary school level). Check into virtual school options as well. n  Follow your child’s lead. It was so sad when I was in a homeschool store and heard a kid ask his mom if they could learn about a certain topic and she said, “No, these are the books that we are working on this year.” Help foster curiosity by exploring topics that interest your kids.

n  Avoid comparing your family to others. It’s funny how I beat myself up because my kids don’t know how to do something my neighbor’s kids can do; and she beats herself up because she doesn’t take as many educational outings as I do. It’s great to have a homeschool tribe of people to discuss ideas with, but comparing and competition aren’t helpful to anyone, especially the kids.

n  Discontinue what doesn’t work. Switching curriculum halfway through the year is not uncommon. If a certain workbook makes you want to throw it across the room, don’t power through it until the end of the school year! Find something else that works. That’s the beauty of freedom of homeschooling.

n  Don’t try to be perfect. The longer I homeschool, the more I enjoy telling newbies about mistakes I’ve made along the way. Making mistakes is normal, so go easy on yourself and have fun on this shorter-than-youthink journey with your kids.

n  Don’t do everything for your child. Encourage independence and independent thinking.

– by Kerrie McLoughlin, a parenting writer who has home-schooled her five children since 2006 .

HOME SCHOOLING: A Parent’s Guide n  Year-round learning. Course work can end in May, as it does in traditional schools, or extend through summer so kids don’t lose some of their gains during a two-month summer break.

Disadvantages n  Not for everyone. Homeschooling works best for motivated students and parents and requires self-discipline and organization. In most homeschooling families, one parent does not work full-time. Parents must research a curriculum that fits their child’s needs. Teaching your children all day requires patience. n  Social interactions. Students might miss out on camaraderie with peers unless the family makes an effort to meet other homeschooling families or neighborhood families, or the student does a hybrid arrangement and takes some classes on a campus a couple of days a week. Sports teams are another way to foster peer friendships. n  College admission. Families need to carefully document the student’s course work and parents must create a transcript for their child based on his course work. Colleges also will look at extracurricular activities and scores on standardized tests. Some families enroll high school kids in programs like eCore, which provides online college level classes through the University System of Georgia for students being homeschooled or those enrolled in traditional high schools.

Homeschooling Support Families can enroll their kids in online public schools such as the Georgia Cyber Academy and the Georgia Connections Academy for their course work, which allows the students to learn at home. Other education services for homeschooling families offer a range of support, including academic courses, tutoring, curriculum assistance and more. Living Science Homeschool Study Center, for instance, concentrates on science and STEM classes, allowing parents to teach other subjects at home. Others supporting homeschooling include Atlanta Learning Academy, HEDGE Homeschool Ministry, HEGA Hybrid Education in Greater Atlanta, Master’s Academy and The Timothy Ministry. Some of metro Atlanta’s museums and attractions also offer programs specifically for homeschool families, including Zoo Atlanta, the Atlanta History Center, the Southern Museum and the High Museum of Art.

What Is a Hybrid School? About 20 percent of homeschooling families enroll their kids in a hybrid school. These hybrid schools typically offer a full range of academic courses, with kids attending classes a few days a week on a campus and doing school work at home the other days. Most are accredited and provide the services of a traditional school: standardized testing support or testing to measure progress, grades, transcripts, labs, extracurricular activities and social interaction with peers. The King’s Academy in Woodstock, opened in 1999, is perhaps the first K-12 hybrid school in Georgia, now educating 975 students. Classes meet two days a week and students do teacher-assigned studies at home the other days, with the school holding parents and students accountable for completing the work. The school is accredited, and students graduate with a transcript and diploma, just as they would in a traditional school. “To us it is the best of both worlds. The advantage of hybrid schooling is parents are still getting to be a huge influence in their children’s lives during the week, because the kids are at home with them, but the kids are getting the experience of a classroom and learning under a teacher,” says Kristi

T E A C H IN

Brannen, Head of School at the academy. “It takes a huge burden off the parents who don’t have to research and teach the curriculum.” Students at the academy also participate in activities typical of a traditional school, including visual arts, yearbook, clubs, drama, choir, band, sports and even Army JROTC. A sampling of other hybrid schools in metro Atlanta includes The Academy of Dunwoody, Cornerstone Preparatory Academy, Regina Caeli, Rivers Academy, The School of the Seven Sages, Veritas Classical Schools and Canton Homeschool Resources.

Hybrid schools offer students extracurricular activities and social interaction with peers Some traditional private schools also offer a hybrid version, accepting homeschool students who attend class a couple of days a week. Mount Paran Christian School just announced a hybrid program for kindergartners and first-graders, who would attend classes on the campus 2.5 days per week, while being homeschooled other days.

EATING OUT

BLUETOP serves creative American fare in a fast-casual atmosphere. Diners place their orders at the counter, then pick a table inside or on the large outdoor patio. Misting fans ensure comfort on the patio even in the summer heat. BLUETOP’s first-class kitchen, outfitted in a 1969 metal trailer, was purchased for $500 down the street at one of Chamblee’s many antique stores. BLUETOP was a taxi stand in the 1950’s and vintage signs and photos from the era are found throughout the restaurant.

Be sure to leave room for dessert. “The banana pudding was my favorite!” my 11-year-old daughter Sarah said. Owner Andy Lasky told us that this is a family recipe passed down for generations.

n  What’s on the menu: While my less adventuresome kids enjoyed simple burgers and chips ($7), my husband had a delicious blackened fish sandwich on a pretzel bun ($13), recommended by our server. I sampled several small plates including pork belly bites with shishito peppers, empenadas, risotto balls topped with delicate greens and a mini shrimp po-boy sandwich. The menu changes seasonally but kid-friendly items are a staple as well as local craft brews.

n  Why kids will like it: The menu always has familiar food and new things to try. Kids and adults are free to walk around the patio, which has a cornhole and bocce ball for entertainment. –  Becky Cooper

n  Why parents will like it: Great menu that changes seasonally. It is a noisy enough environment that parents can relax and the kids can be kids.

T

he Amazing Castle exhibit transports children into a time where every job in a community served a royal purpose. Children can dress in regal attire as they wander through the beautiful village hidden beyond the castle’s stone walls. The Great Hall and Garden, The Royal Workshop and The Dragon tower are just a few of the many places to explore. The castle walls ring with laughter as kids cook a meal fit for a king or wake Herald, the sleeping dragon. They can pick vegetables from the castle garden, try their hand at making or repairing clothing, do carpentry or blacksmithy work, or take part in the puppet theater. Kids also can create a crown or goblet in the craft class offered every 30 minutes. Storytime is right outside the castle walls and incorporates this “amazing” attraction. 52 Atlanta Parent    July 2018

‘Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic’

F

or those who grew up reading “Winnie-the-Pooh” stories, this exhibit is a dose of nostalgia. For today’s kids, it’s an adventure in discovering an adorable teddy bear who has grown ever more popular over the past 90-plus years. Winnie-the-Pooh was first presented to the public in 1923, after political writer A.A. Milne was inspired to tell stories about his son, Christopher, and his son’s favorite teddy bear, Winnie-the-Pooh. While Christopher played, his father watched and chronicled their imaginary adventures. Artist and cartoonist E.H. Shepard illustrated the stories. Teddy bears, named after U.S. President Theodore” Teddy” Roosevelt, were popular toys in the early 20th century, and Christopher got his on his first birthday in 1921. Originally, the bear was named Edward, but Christopher renamed him after he saw a real bear named Winnie at the London Zoo. The exhibit features numerous original drawings and books, plus photographs of the author and his son playing with his bear. Before visiting the exhibit, take time to read a couple of the Pooh stories to your child so he’ll be familiar with Winnie, Christopher Robin, Piglet, Eeyore, Rabbit, Tigger, Kanga and Roo. At the exhibit, kids can sit in trees scattered throughout and listen to the only known audio of the author reading Pooh stories. They also can play “Poohsticks” on a bridge over a projected river. “Poohsticks” is a game Winnie-the-Pooh invented, where he and his friends drop sticks into the river and guess whose stick will reach the other side of the bridge first. Another popular spot for kids is a drawing table with pencils and papers so children can try their hand at sketching Pooh and other favorite characters. Two-year-old Ella, who was visiting the exhibit with her father, liked sitting in the Nursery bed and reading books set out for children to explore. On Saturdays and Sundays, don’t miss live storytimes at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. For babies and toddlers, visit “The One Acre Wood” play space at the Woodruff Arts Center to explore textures and sounds inspired by The Hundred Acre Wood from Winnie-the-Pooh stories. (Open through July 15, Mon.-Fri. 1-4 p.m. Sat. and Sun. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 9-15, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.) –  Becky Cooper

n  At the Movies On August 3, Disney releases “Christopher Robin” (PG) in theatres. This version brings audiences back to where the story of Winnie-the-Pooh began, and even includes characters modeled more after the original illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard. The story follows a working-class family man, Christopher Robin, as he encounters his childhood friend Winnie-the-Pooh, who helps him to rediscover the joys of life.

New Songs, Sword Fights and Lots of Fun with ‘Peter Pan’

“P

eter Pan” at Serenbe Playhouse will whisk you away to Neverland for a most splendid (and humorfilled) hour with Peter Pan, Smee, Captain Hook and Tinkerbell in this timeless classic. We were immediately transported to this magical place by the outdoor amphitheater’s impeccable attention to detail. As you walk up to the amphitheater, you‘ll see the Jolly Roger, and then Tinkerbell appears via a zip line to begin the story. This version of Sir J.M. Barrie’s beloved story is unique. The actors sing new songs live to the accompaniment of recorded music, and there is a different take on the plot. But in case you were wondering: Yes, Peter Pan and Captain Hook do sword fight! What my family liked the best was that the actors came down to the front area to interact with the audience from time to time

– which is great for keeping a child’s attention. When Tinkerbell sprinkled her fairy dust on us, one of my 7-year-old twins exclaimed, “Glitter!” The actors are members of the playhouse’s apprentice program, and they are talented recent college graduates who will work in every production at Serenbe for one year. The play was directed by Michael Alvarez, who has directed productions all over the world. The drive from North Atlanta takes 55 minutes, but it’s well worth it – people from all over the metro area make the drive. I sat next to a sweet mother from Smyrna who had already made the trip five times to see some of the other productions. My children, an 11-year-old and the twins, loved this play and they have talked about it incessantly since our visit. It was a wonderful way to spend a summer day! –  Cindy Moss
