Stay and Play in Georgia Summer Fun at Zoo Atlanta Cool Ice Cream Treats

t’s hard to believe we’re already in the middle of summer! In just five weeks, most kids will be heading back to the classroom. The long lazy days of summer somehow don’t seem so lazy any more. Busy working parents may find it stressful trying to create the “perfect” summer for their kids. Instead of stressing about it, focus on planning a few special activities and trust that the memories will happen naturally. Ice cream is a summer staple, whether you make it at home, enjoy it at your local scoop shop or even spot the old-fashioned ice cream truck in your neighborhood. And don’t miss the Atlanta Ice Cream Festival, July 27 in Piedmont Park, where you can sample new flavors and enjoy fun and games. There are plenty of ways to make summer memories around Atlanta. One standout new exhibition this month is “Titanic: An Immersive Voyage” at Exhibition Hub — it promises to be fascinating! Visit with butterflies at Chattahoochee Nature Center or Smith-Gilbert Gardens, go tubing on the Chattahoochee or explore French culture in Atlanta in honor of the Paris Olympic Games. When it comes to summer fun, there’s no need to break the bank — free opportunities include outdoor movies and concerts, “Kids Bowl Free” deals and more. Check out your local playground, nature center or park, or explore public art around town. Find so much to do this month in our Family Fun Guide and online at atlantaparent.com. Now more than ever, there are so many different ways for kids to learn. If you’ve been curious about homeschooling, check out the Southeast Homeschool Expo, July 25-27 at Cobb Galleria. It has a wealth of information and resources for parents. In this month’s issue, you’ll also find an indepth look at the variety of ways kids can learn from home, from traditional homeschooling to hybrid options and virtual schools. We asked local families about their experiences; learn how one of these educational options might be a great fit for your family. This month also features our annual “Top 10” lists, and they cover everything from parties and entertainment to education, classes and the best places to play. Use it all year to stay “in the know” about everything Atlanta has to offer. Atlanta Parent is your go-to source for parenting information. We’d love to hear what you and your family are up to this month! Tell us about the summer memories you’re making via email or our social media channels. Wishing you a happy and safe summer,

DIY Olympic Fun

Test your own athletic abilities by hosting some Olympic Games at home. Buy or craft gold, silver and bronze medals for the prizes. n Head to a nearby track or use builder’s tape to mark the track in your backyard. Try sprints or baton relay races, or set up small obstacles your children can jump over for hurdles. n Explore who can jump the farthest by marking a starting line using chalk or tape, and then marking the point at which your child lands. n Head to a nearby park with a volleyball, soccer, basketball or to a tennis court. n Pack up your bikes to go for a family bike ride. n If you have a trampoline, use it to help your kids show off their own talents in gymnastics. n Paint or chalk an even stripe of flat lawn or driveway to create a balance beam. Ask your children to use their “balance” to perform certain actions — walking forward, backward and hopping. n Consider purchasing an archery set for kids to see who can aim for the bullseye. n Set up a water table to have your kids compete in a rowing race. Craft boats or use boat toys to see who crosses the finish line first. n Use pool noodles as javelins to see who can throw the item the farthest or throw a frisbee like a discus. n Suit up to try tricks of the skateboarding trade at a nearby skate park in the metro area, such as Bay Creek Park, Arthur Langford Jr. Park, Kennesaw Skatepark, Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark or Brook Run Park.

SCHOOL TOURS AND OPEN HOUSES Attending a school tour or an open house are wonderful ways to see if a new school is the right fit for your child. l Start by doing your research. Narrow down the options until you have a short list of schools that seem the best for your child by looking at websites, FAQs, pre-recorded videos and social media pages. l Create a list of questions you plan to ask each school. What questions do you or your child have that you can’t find answers to on the website? Responses can help you narrow down or rank the school options that you’re interested in. l Schools may have different options that you can register to attend, with each session being important for different reasons. Pay attention to the options offered, so you can decide what makes the most sense for you to attend. Signing up for a phone conference may be a better fit before registering for a campus tour, if you decide your family is still interested in the school.

l At a tour, whether it’s virtual or inperson, expect to tour the school, learn more about the community, talk to school professionals, and ask questions. l At an open house, expect to hear words of welcome from administrators and a plug from the PTA. Schools usually include a brief school history, an educational philosophy, a mission statement and a list of extracurricular activities or clubs. This overview period is a good time for parents to ask about the bus schedule, school lunches, physical education requirements, dress code and more. l After the school session, look at SAT scores, attendance records and grade-point averages. Follow up with phone calls and emails if you have questions. l If it’s not part of the tour, schedule a time to observe a class in session. This will give you a good idea of the teaching style and classroom setting. Are the desks arranged in groups or in rows facing the teacher? What materials does the classroom have for the students? Are the students enthusiastic about learning?

l Talk to other parents about the school. Most parents are happy to share their thoughts. l Some schools offer programs that allow you and your child to learn more from a student’s perspective. If not, ask administrators if they can connect your child with a student at the school. l Look at the big picture. You may be hoping to stay with the system through high school, so research graduation and college placement rates. This information is usually found on the school’s website. – Emily Webb and Alexi Wilbourn

What Schooling at Home Looks Like by Emily Webb

If you are considering homeschooling, there is a lot to learn before you get started, especially since there are more resources and options — including virtual and hybrid models — available than ever before. Atlanta Parent spoke to families about why they chose to school at home and what you need to know about this educational approach that is growing in popularity.

HYBRID For students with passions outside of school, hybrid learning allows them to pursue those without sacrificing academics, as it often gives students more flexibility by incorporating at-home and in-person learning. Students attend in-person classes several times a week, while other days are spent on virtual learning or homeschooling, depending on the program. This approach also works well for parents who want the homeschool experience, but may not want to teach every subject, especially as concepts grow in difficulty. This year, five of Michelle West’s eight children are enrolled at Regina Caeli, the family’s 10th year at the school. Regina Caeli is a homeschool hybrid model, where students attend classes on Mondays and Thursdays and follow the integrated curriculum at home the rest of the week.

The Mills Family

HOMESCHOOLING “I loved the idea of being your child’s first teacher,” says Tomarion Mills, who has homeschooled daughter, Sage, since kindergarten. “We get to travel more, and I can educate on the road. I get to curate my family’s interactions with other families to find the right fit for homeschooling together and taking field trips. Every day is a learning opportunity, whether we’re at home or at special events.” Homeschooling, which refers to a curriculum provided and taught at home by the child’s parent or guardian, allows families more freedom. “I get to do a lot of science,” adds Sage, who will start third grade this school year. “We get to do what we want when we want.” “Homeschooling is a custom or catered education,” says Jennifer Henn, a homeschool mentor and author who homeschooled her three children. “Different kids are very different learners. For struggling students, they may need extra help or need more time. But it’s also ok if they’re ahead in some subjects.” Different schooling might also help children with learning disabilities. “I have learning disabilities that were never addressed, and throughout school, I was accused of not trying,” Henn says. “As a little girl, I remember vowing to myself, ‘I will never allow my children to go through what I’ve gone through.’” When two of her children were diagnosed with learning disabilities, Henn was able to encourage learning without repeating the mistakes from her past. in 2024 “I love hybrid education, because it provides more than just an educational model that incorporates the benefits of homeschooling with the structure and accountability of a five-day model,” says West, who is also the National Leadership Team’s Expansion Manager. “I love that I can continue to homeschool my children during the formative years without the stress of staying on top of graduation requirements, lesson planning, choosing curriculum, worrying about creating educational gaps and grading my children’s assignments.” Denise Cobb was first introduced to school choice when the family moved to Atlanta so son, Noah, could be part of Atlanta United Academy. In his senior year, Atlanta International School’s AISx launched its partnership with Atlanta United Football Club Development Academy. AISx offers a flexible academic schedule with courses taught in-person or virtually. “There was a big commitment from the school in exploring and offering nontraditional learning models to support

kids, like our son, who were pursuing their passions and dreams,” Cobb says. “A tremendous amount of effort and thought went into developing Noah’s class schedule. It was tailored specifically for him and helped him focus on pursuing his soccer commitments while meeting his academic demands. Noah loved all his teachers and felt challenged academically while still being able to fully pursue and meet the demands of his soccer schedule.” Noah graduated as part of the program’s first cohort in May 2024. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Elisa Jerrold homeschooled her children, Mackenzie and Lance. When

the family realized how much they could accomplish outside of a traditional, five-day schedule, they looked into other options. They settled on Capstone Academy, a private school with a collaborative and flexible hybrid education for aspiring younger performers and athletes. “We love it for the flexibility,” she says. “It’s a very child-driven educational environment. My kids pursue musical instruments; they know multiple languages; my son plays soccer, and my daughter is a pre-professional ballerina with Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre. They can pursue a lot of different things outside of school.” Cont’d on next page

What Schooling at Home

Looks Like in 2024 VIRTUAL

Melody Johnson’s son, Alex, started i-Grad Virtual Academy in 2021. Johnson first became intrigued with the option during the COVID-19 pandemic. This full-time virtual school is for Cherokee County students in 9th-12th grade. Virtual learning offers education via a digital curriculum taught either in a simultaneous or self-paced environment. Schooling at home offers more flexibility for children who would miss too much of traditional schooling, such as children with medical issues, like Johnson’s daughter, Alyssa. She tried homeschooling, but Alyssa needed peers to connect with and educators who could provide specialized support. She joined i-Grad in 2022. “It’s been incredible to see how they challenge and uplift each student to be the best version of themselves,” Johnson says. “But what really sets i-Grad apart is its diversity. From students with medical and physical challenges to athletes balancing academics and sports, everyone has a place here. And that’s what I love most — the fact that every student, regardless of their background or abilities, has the opportunity to thrive.” Other counties in metro Atlanta have virtual programs, such as Fulton and Cobb. Georgia Cyber Academy and Georgia Connections Academy are public, virtual schools, and some private schools, such as Greater Atlanta Christian School’s Ethos School, also offer virtual education.

SOCIALIZATION For many parents, concerns about their child’s social skills may keep them from considering at schooling at home. “Our families were concerned our child would be isolated not attending traditional school,” says Aminah Mills. “But it’s easier in the school system to fade away. It’s automatic — you either do it or you don’t. Sage has to impose her own personality, and she’s encouraged to work quite a bit on her social skills.” The metro area has a lot of extracurricular activities for children, and Sage is involved in soccer and track. Homeschooling can also help build multi-generational bonds. “Lots of homeschooling functions across generations, where students hang out with both older adults and peers. Nowhere else is like that,” Henn says. “I got to take my children everywhere and teach them to do everything, from grocery shopping to talking to adults to holding the door open for people.” Hybrid schools have socialization built into them, as students participate and connect during in-person classes. “Regina Caeli provides flexibility, consistency and a community for my family outside the classroom,” West says. “Through the field trips, gatherings for the families and cohesive spiritual formation, we feel Regina Caeli encourages a well-rounded approach in developing the whole person.” Students are also invited to school clubs and events. At AISx, Noah was able to participate in traditional school activities, such as prom and graduation ceremonies. Alex and Alyssa are involved in multiple clubs at i-Grad. With ongoing concerns about screentime, some parents might worry about children spending the day on virtual learning.“It’s understandable to wonder how kids can learn solely from a computer screen, but i-Grad goes above and beyond to provide engaging resources. They organize in-person activities that allow students to interact with peers and adults, fostering positive experiences for both students and parents,” Johnson says.

When You’re Ready to Start If you are interested in pursuing a different educational pathway, consider this advice to help your family make the most of the process. n Reach out. “Talk to other parents,” Cobb says. “One can feel overwhelmed very quickly. There is no one size fits all, and you must find what works for your child and your family.” n Do your own research. “Every group has their own vocabulary, so it can be helpful to familiarize yourself with the methods,” Henn says. n Make sure you understand the requirements and reach out if you have any questions. “Regina Caeli students are considered homeschoolers, and each state has its own requirements for homeschoolers when it comes to registration, reporting and required subjects. However, Regina Caeli is still there to support parents by providing transcripts and preparation for life after high school, including a two-year professional development curriculum,” West says. n Give yourself and your child grace. With any change, there is a transition period. “Trust yourself,” Tomarion says. “You can teach your child. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Give your child and yourself a break.”

Ten Parents You Will See on the First Day of School by Pam Molnar

Ready or not, the first day of school is next month. The varied sights and sounds of school children and their parents are especially fun to watch. Whether you live ITP or OTP, these parent types are easy to pick out. Which one are you?

1 The First Timer:

6 The Hot Mess:

7 The Career Parent:

We are all first timers at some point. These poor parents look as lost as their children. They are shocked at the size of 5th graders and can’t believe their baby will ever be that big. The First Timer parent will put on a brave face for their child at the door but burst into tears as they turn to go home.

The Veteran: Been there. Done that. They are unfazed by

the chaos of the drop-off line, the unusual items on the supply list and the drama of the other parents. The Veteran can be seen toasting their friends with travel mugs as they stop at the school sidewalk. No need to walk their kids to the door.

3 The Documenter:

This is the parent who is taking a video of their child getting out of the car and walking to the door. The Documenter brings props to the playground to enhance their pictures, like a social media pro. These parents have it posted and hashtagged before they leave the school parking lot.

4 The Teacher’s Pet:

This parent is a beacon of light in an overwhelmed teacher’s morning. She brings the teacher a latte, a gift card to the liquor store and extra school supplies from her wish list. The Teacher’s Pet has already volunteered for every opportunity in the classroom.

5 The Mayor:

This parent knows everyone because she has been at the school for an extremely long time. All the teachers and staff know her and greet her by name. The Mayor has been on every PTA committee at least once, including holding the role of PTA president. She even has an understood designated parking spot.

70 Atlanta Parent

July 2024

She arrives at the school, dressed in pajamas, after the morning bell and is still packing lunches from the front seat. Miscellaneous papers fly out of her van as the kids get out. The family goldendoodle barks happily from the front seat and tries to jump out the window. Dressed nicer than the rest of us, this parent will most likely be multi-tasking on the first day of school. The Career Parent waves and smiles but cannot talk because she is listening to a conference call that she could not get out of. Her kids are organized and self-sufficient and they all communicate through a form of family sign language. She points to the ground and holds up three fingers, meaning — meet you here at 3:00.

8 The Complainer:

Everything is wrong. The school supply list is too long. The drop-off line moves too slowly. The teacher’s email is too vague. The playground equipment doesn’t have enough swings. The hot lunch menu is limited. The Complainer shares her disgust loudly with anyone who is listening — her children, other parents, the teacher and everyone on staff.

9 The Caretaker:

This is the person stepping in for mom or dad when dropping the child off for the first day of school. Much like the First Timer, this person doesn’t know which door the child enters and doesn’t know how the morning drop-off lane works. They cross the child in the middle of the street, stopping traffic and angering the crossing guard.

10 The Homeschool Parent:

She is the one watching from her front porch and smiling. The first day of school has always been her favorite as the parks, pools and stores are less crowded. They started school three weeks ago and next week are headed off for their back-to-school vacation.
