t’s June, and it really feels like summer is back. The Atlanta Parent staff had a great time putting this issue together – it’s packed with ideas for planning a summer of family fun. Atlanta is full of iconic favorites – Stone Mountain Park’s laser show, the Braves, Centennial Olympic Park and many others. However, there are lots of new things happening! The Chattahoochee Nature Center’s new River Boardwalk Trail recently opened, offering an even better way to experience nature. The CNC’s Butterfly Encounter is a must-do for many Atlanta families, too. A little further south, the Atlanta BeltLine has quickly become a popular place to walk, bike and explore – read our guide to exploring this urban oasis. Another must-do summer activity is outdoor movies – a great way for families to enjoy an evening together. Don’t miss our ideas for “hometown tourist” fun in this issue! Whether your kids are younger or in their tweens, there’s lots to do right here in Atlanta, from nature and gardens to art and history. When you’re ready for a day or weekend trip, our Stay and Play in Georgia section is a great place to start planning. Look for festivals and farms to visit, natural wonders, amusement parks and more. Of course, it wouldn’t be summer without pools and waterparks. New this year is Spivey Park in Jonesboro, a fun (and very affordable!) waterpark with slides, a river, splash pad and more. Another family favorite is Margaritaville at Lanier Islands; it’s a great day trip on a hot day. Check out all the parks, pools and splash pads around Atlanta in this issue’s Get Wet Guide. I’m looking forward to my favorite summertime events; one of them is the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Piedmont Park. They’ll be performing on Oak Hill June 15 and 22. Tell Atlanta Parent about your must-do summer plans! Give us a shout on Facebook, Twitter or send an email to editor@atlantaparent.com. No matter what activities you and your family choose this month, don’t forget to double-check reservation and ticketing policies. Many places require advance reservations or have limited capacities. “Know before you go” to avoid any disappointments. Wishing you a happy start to summer!

S’MORES:
The quintessential summertime treat! by Sarah Yale
Crunchy graham crackers, rich chocolate and sticky marshmallows combine for a yummy, simple dessert. After a long day of swimming, head out to the fire pit and create some ooey, gooey treats. Rather stay indoors? That works, too! You can use the oven or microwave to melt the chocolate and marshmallows. You can even create a s’mores dip that you can make ahead and cuts down on the mess factor. OUTDOOR S’MORES
INDOOR S’MORES
S’more Ideas
Get your ingredients ready. Choose a skewer or stick long enough to keep your hand safely away from the heat source and slide the marshmallow on, leaving a few inches at the tip of the stick so the marshmallow will stay put. Using a metal skewer can help warm the marshmallow interior. Toast the marshmallow 2-4” away from the heat source, rotating every few seconds depending on how hot the fire is. Brown the marshmallow to suit yourself or your guest. For extra gooey goodness, put two toasted marshmallows on your s’more. When the marshmallow is done toasting, drag the stick along the edge of a graham cracker to slide the marshmallow off the stick and onto the cracker. Turn the cracker and marshmallow over onto the other cracker half with the chocolate piece. Press down until the marshmallow oozes close to the edges. Wait a minute to allow the marshmallow to soften the chocolate. Eat and enjoy.
Toaster Oven or Broiler
n Spread peanut butter on the graham crackers or add a sliced fruit layer.
12 Atlanta Parent
June 2022
Place a marshmallow on a graham cracker half. Set on a cookie sheet. Broil for about 30 seconds or until golden brown. Remove from broiler or toaster oven. Place marshmallow side down on top of another graham cracker with a chocolate bar piece on it. Wait a minute before serving to soften the chocolate.
Microwave Place chocolate bar piece on top of a graham cracker half. Put a marshmallow on top of the chocolate. Heat in the microwave on a plate for 10 seconds at a time on medium power. Rotate every 10 seconds until the marshmallow pops. Remove from the microwave and cover with the other graham cracker half. Serve after about a minute if cool enough.
n Put out a variety of candies for people to add to their s’mores. n Use chocolate sandwich or chocolate chip cookies instead of graham crackers for an extra chocolatey twist.
S’more Freshness Facts n Don’t toss stale marshmallows. Place a piece of bread in the bag and reseal it. Within a day the marshmallows should be softened. If not, put another piece of bread in the bag and wait a day. n Keep graham crackers fresh by storing in a plastic bag. Squeeze any excess air out of the bag to further retain freshness. n Store chocolate in a cool, dark place, but don’t place it in the refrigerator because it can take on the flavors of what’s nearby.

Fathers Know Best by Emily Webb
Happy Father’s Day! June is all about dads. We spoke to some notable dads in metro Atlanta about what fatherhood means to them, their advice to fellow dads and their wishes for this Father’s Day.
Grant Rivera
Superintendent of Marietta City Schools. Father of Lauren, 9 and Reese, 6
Ben Chestnut
CEO and Co-Founder of Mailchimp. Father of two boys, ages 14 and 11
n Best advice from a fellow dad: Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child. As parents, our job is to prepare them to be self-sufficient adults. My own father would help with about 60%, often leaving the toughest 40% to me. I model much of my own parenting on what he showed me. n Advice for a new dad: Give your children responsibility. I like to garden with my boys. It teaches them what it’s like to plant food, care for it, get their hands dirty, then help feed the family, which satisfies their longing to be useful. n Is there a tradition you had with your dad that you do with your children? My mother was Thai, but my taste buds preferred southern American food, so the task of cooking breakfast for me got handed to my dad. I cherish those early morning memories in the kitchen with my dad. I always take time to make breakfast and talk to my boys. n A lesson you learned from your dad: I took karate class when I was in high school, and my dad would always pick me up. One day, after the gym closed, I was waiting for my dad with a girl named Teresa. We sat and talked for a while, and when my dad pulled up, I told Teresa, “Well, I have to run! See ya!” and jumped into the car. But my dad said, “Get back over there, and talk to that girl, like a gentleman, until her father shows up.” So, I sat down with Teresa until her own dad came. Teresa and I have been happily married for 24 years. 14 Atlanta Parent
June 2022
n Parenting daughters: Every child is unique, and no two can be parented exactly the same way. It is important to be present in their everyday lives: We make breakfast together every morning; I coach soccer; I teach gymnastics. We have secret handshakes. I also do ponytails and French braids, but admittedly need more practice. It is equally as important to love their mom, my wife Jenn. My example will be what they choose someday in a partner. n Advice for a new dad: Change diapers, do the dishes, and set up the baby monitor on your nightstand. Sleepless nights are for dads, too, not just the parent who is nursing/feeding. Although it is challenging, it is also magical as you bond with both your spouse and your newborn. n Favorite thing to do with your daughters: We ride around in my Jeep Wrangler, which the girls have nicknamed the “Fun Jeep.” Our motto is “top down, music up,” and the girls know to wave two fingers at the other Jeep Wranglers. My hope is our frequent cruising and singing remind my girls to never take life too seriously!
Pano Koulouris
Co-Owner and Operator of Grecian Gyro. Father to Isabella and Niko, ages 9 and 5
n Best advice from a fellow dad: My uncle told me what someone told him when his son was born: they’re going to grow up. It always resonated with me. When you realize that being a parent isn’t a perfect equation, and there is no one specific answer to the problem, you learn to stop stressing yourself out as much. n Advice for a new dad: Don’t overthink it. You will figure it out. The best advice you should take is your own. No one knows your children as well as you and your family. n On the importance of time: Always find time to be with your family. We get consumed with so many distractions it is easy to lose focus. It’s important to find a good work/life balance. Don’t let work take you away from your family. Don’t let what happens at work affect your home. Take a break from TV and social media and enjoy your family. atlantaparent.com
Matt Chernoff
Part of the radio duo Chuck & Chernoff on The Fan; Host of “Welcome To Mattlanta” and “The Daily 10 Podcast.” Father of Jake, 15; Zoe, 11 and Josh, 9
n Best advice from a fellow dad: Take a breath. Listen to what they have to say and try not to overreact. n Favorite things to do with your kids: I try to do oneon-one time with all of them. It’s a huge deal for them as much as it is for me to give them their own time and space with all of my attention. My boys are pretty typical – we will hop in the backyard and throw the ball constantly. We do daddy/daughter dates, and she loves board games. She knows that I watch Jeopardy, and she’ll watch with me, and we got a Jeopardy PlayStation game that we play together. n Favorite Father’s Day gift: I love when they make stuff at school, like this is a story about my dad. When they’re 6 years old, it says: my dad’s 7 feet tall, he talks on the radio, he knows how to make bananas. It doesn’t make sense, but I love to see the time they put into it.
Glenn Moscoso
Blogger and Influencer at “Wheelchair Daddy.” Father of Jacob, 9
n Advice for a new dad: You’re not suddenly a superhero! You will make mistakes and those mistakes will help build your character, as well as character in your child. Fatherhood is not all about the physical activities. It’s about teaching him/her character, compassion, doing good and being a kind human being. n Misconception you deal with about fatherhood: It is a little annoying to hear people say, “You have your helper with you today.” No, I have my son with me, and he is doing his part by pushing the cart. Jacob has chores, just as in any other family. Like any other family, we each do our part to keep things going! n Favorite things to do with your son: I love going outside and tossing the ball or playing basketball. Even just sitting and listening to him talk about any and everything. I learn a lot about baseball and history. More importantly, I learn about him and how his mind works. n Most memorable Father’s Day: The very first one! A dream come true. Growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s as a person with a disability, I never thought I could or would be a dad. So, waking up on that first Father’s Day and changing Jacob’s diaper was a surreal moment. atlantaparent.com
Even dads with adult children cherish Father’s Day to connect with their kids and remember the good old days! Ford Fry, Chef/Owner and Founder of Ford Fry
Restaurants and dad of Austin, 25 and Anders, 23 on his favorite family meal: My wife would make them pancakes with buckwheat flour, flaxseed, pure maple syrup – as healthy as she could make it. When it was my day to make pancakes, I’d use white flour, a lot of butter, Log Cabin syrup, and look at their eyes light up: Is this what pancakes are supposed to taste like?
Travis Williams,
Creator of the Blog “Daddy’s Hangout” and father of D’Andre, 23, Jasmine, 22 and Jada, 17 on the best advice he received: Any man can become a dad, but not all will be fathers, right after finding out I was about to become a father myself.
Kenny Burns,
Entrepreneur and Lifestyle Specialist and dad of Kenny, 21 and Kyle, 18 on what he hopes to get this Father’s Day: I need my hugs. I don’t care how big you are, I need hugs.

SUMMER Fun Guide
THE BELTLINE:
Exploring Atlanta’s Urban Oasis by Tali Benjamin
It’s a walking trail. It’s a bike path. It’s a green space. It’s an art museum. It’s a gym. It’s an arboretum. It’s a place to play. It’s the Atlanta BeltLine! While you might think of the BeltLine as something simple, it has a lot to offer and appeals to everyone. Here are some fun ways to spend a day (or two) exploring this 22-mile long (and growing) Atlanta destination this summer.
Eastside Trail
Walk on The West Side There are a few trails on this side of town that connect and let you explore one of Atlanta’s oldest areas. If you start on the West End Trail, you can see the 0-mile marker and start of the whole BeltLine. The Westside Trail is a perfect place to take advantage of the Arboretum Tours, which are walking tours led by Trees Atlanta and give you an insight into native plants and trees in our area. This trail is also home to some of the BeltLine’s most interesting art – murals and sculptures created by local artists. l Nearby Attractions: Highlights of this historic neighborhood include Hammonds House Museum and Wren’s Nest. The former celebrates artists of African descent, and the latter is the historic home of author Joel Chandler Harris. These museums are both accessible off of the 3-mile Westside Trail. l Sweet Treat: Honeysuckle Gelato’s West End location just off the BeltLine in the Lee & White building acts as their “test” kitchen, so flavors rotate often, and it’s where you can get a taste of something new. In addition to gelato, they offer baked goods, Honeysuckle Gelato slushies and craft sodas.

Exploring The East Side Start your adventure at Ponce City Market, which is home to a food hall and shops. The roof boasts mini golf and amusement park-style games. There’s plenty of parking, and you can stop off for bathrooms before you hit the trail. You can opt for walking or biking (there are rental options, but kids’ bikes aren’t the norm, so check ahead of time). Just a short walk away is the Historic Old Fourth Ward Park, complete with a playground and splash pad. A little farther down, you can also head to Piedmont Park off the BeltLine to enjoy a picnic or play. If you have older kids and a sense of adventure, extend your hike by connecting to the Freedom Parkway Trail, which will add about 4,000 steps to your journey. Bobby Jones Golf Course
Navigating The North Side The Northside Trail is approximately 1 mile long and gives visitors a true sense of nature in the city. Part of this trail goes through Tanyard Creek Park and features a large playground and rock-climbing wall. The Northeast Trail is under construction; when finished, it will reach from Piedmont Park to the Lindbergh MARTA Station making more miles of connection within the city. l Nearby Attraction: The Bobby Jones Golf Course sits just off of this trail. The historic course is also home to the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, and restaurant and golf academy. The Cupps Link 5-hole, par 3 course is perfect for families. Children play for free, adults can play two rounds for $10 or free if you’re caddying for a child. l Sweet Treat: Just a short drive away, Izzy’s Ice Kreme, located inside a Greek restaurant, is a must-try if you’re in the area. They offer traditional shakes and cones, but if you want to be more adventurous, try one of their Euro-style sundaes, including baklava Nutella or sour cherry split.
Ponce City Market
Sightseeing on The South Side This trail is unpaved but still plenty of fun. There are two parks to enjoy off of the Southside Trail – D.H. Stanton Park is super family-friendly with a splash pad, playground and baseball diamond while Boulevard Crossing Park is more open with lots of green space and sports fields. Both options are perfect for a summer picnic! With easy access from Grant Park, the Southside Trail is a great add on after a Sunday visit to the farmers market. l Nearby Attractions: The closest attraction to the Southside Trail is Zoo Atlanta, which is home to dozens of animal habitats and features a playground and splash pad for the kids. If you have older kids, Oakland Cemetery is also in the area and a meaningful way to explore the city’s history. l Sweet Treat: Inside the 9-acre Beacon development, just off the BeltLine at Hill Street, sits A Haute Cookie – an edible cookie dough heaven. You can top your dough with ice cream, and you can get your cookie baked (if you prefer a crunch). They have glutenfree and vegan options, so even those with allergies can indulge. Zoo Atlanta

Sweet Inman’s Candies
l Nearby Attractions: Just off the BeltLine is Illuminarium, an immersive cinematic experience with 360-degree screens, scents and movement. “WILD: A Safari Experience” (through late June) and “O’Keeffe: One Hundred Flowers” are currently playing; a new SPACE experience will open June 29. We recommend purchasing timed tickets in advance. Another nearby option is the Atlanta Botanical Garden, which is within walking distance of Piedmont Park. The Garden has an entry fee but is well worth it. Each Friday at 10 and 10:45 a.m., kids can enjoy a fun and educational show about bugs and plants, and then you can check out the Children’s Garden and splash pad. l Sweet Treat: For a combination of nostalgic and new candies, check out Sweet Inman’s Candies at Krog Street Market. The food hall is located between Irwin Street and Edgewood Avenue on the BeltLine and has bike parking.
