Publisher’s Note

I

have always loved to read. As a kid, I loved the library’s summer reading program. There was something satisfying about seeing my list of books grow and meeting my goal. Visits to my grandparents’ home every summer were spent with my nose in a book. Even now, I always have a stack of books on my bedside table, waiting to be read when I have a free moment. Encourage your kids to read – it has so many benefits. Keep an eye out for special programs to keep them engaged in reading this summer, whether it’s through your local library, bookstore or even a family reading challenge. We let our kids have their own stack next to their bedside table at night. It’s their chance to stay up a little later, wind down before bed and enjoy a good book. Reading is a great way to fill time while traveling, in a hammock in the back yard, or even before “lights out” time at camp. As the weather warms, playgrounds around Atlanta are filled with kids after school and on weekends. My kids have always loved playgrounds, and together we’ve spent a lot of time exploring and finding our favorites. Atlanta Parent’s list of the best playgrounds will help you find a great place (or two!) to swing, climb and play. Another thing we love about Atlanta – pizza! There are countless places to find a slice. It’s so easy to get takeout on a busy weeknight, and we love trying out new spots to add to our old favorites. We asked you where to find the best pizza in town, from great takeout to most authentic, and you answered. Read the story on page 14. Atlanta families are eager to get out and about this month, and there’s plenty to do. We’re planning to see the origami sculptures on display at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The LEGO exhibit at Zoo Atlanta is at the top of our list, too. Strawberries are ready for picking, and some of our favorite water parks are opening Memorial Day weekend. Don’t miss a thing – read our Family Fun Guide and start making your plans. Let us know about your family’s favorite spring activities – find us on Facebook and Twitter, or email us at editor@atlantaparent.com.

IT’S SUMMERTIME AT THE LIBRARY

5 ways to keep kids reading and learning The library is so much more than books. Summer reading programs at public libraries (this year’s theme is Ocean of Possibilities) offer creative, fun and FREE ways to build a love of reading. Libraries offer prizes for meeting reading goals, activities in person and online, and opportunities to explore attractions in Atlanta and around the state. Find your nearest library at georgialibraries.org/find-a-library. Learn more about the Summer Reading Program at georgialibraries. org/summer-reading.

1

Read on the Go. Summers are a busy time for families with travel, camps, sports and more. If you didn’t check out enough books for your trip, take advantage of your library’s digital check out for audio and e-books. Whether your child is listening to an audiobook on a road trip, reading an e-book on a device, or going through a stack of picture books on a camping trip, books are the perfect companion to many summer activities, and libraries are making it easy to track reading goals. In addition to traditional paper reading logs, you can take advantage of Beanstack, a digital platform that helps kids track their reading and earn badges by engaging in a wide variety of outdoor and indoor activities. It’s a great companion to the traditional paper reading logs and lets kids earn prizes through the Summer Reading Program.

2

Visit Area Attractions. Did you know your family can check out library passes for free admission or parking to places like the Georgia Aquarium, various museums, Zoo Atlanta, state parks, and the Go Fish Education Center? Through partnerships with organizations across the state, Georgia’s public libraries provide families with educational and recreational opportunities to spend time together while saving money.

atlantaparent.com

3

Attend a Show or Activity. Libraries bring in talented performers during their Summer Reading Programs, so be sure to check their schedule to take advantage of free puppet or magic shows, STEM activities, gardening and even cooking. If you’re wondering if a program is right for your family, call your library for more information and safety guidelines. For families who want to take a more cautious approach, many libraries offer curbside pickup, craft kits-to-go, STEAM kits, reading subscriptions, virtual programs, book clubs and online music classes. Most libraries also will provide outdoor story times and performances.

4

Learn Something New. Summertime can be a great time for kids to explore a new skill or even learn an instrument. Libraries offer items for checkout beyond books and movies, everything from sewing machines to Snap Circuit kits to ukuleles!

5 Express Creativity. Enjoy summer and year-round programming for every type of kid. Children can express their creativity at one of the many library makerspaces in the area. These activities encourage engagement and critical thinking as they help children learn about robotics, engineering, cooking, electronics and more. Many libraries offer story times in multiple languages, early literacy activities for preschoolers and programs to engage youth in everything from gardening to encouraging reluctant readers. If a child has special needs, ask about services the library offers for children with visual or hearing impairments. “Public libraries are the perfect intersection of imagination, curiosity and wonder for children. Every summer, for a few short months, we have the opportunity to shape the trajectory of a child’s life through reading and imaginative play that will bring them back year after year for a lifetime,” said Evan Bush, youth services director at Georgia Public Library Service. Summer reading isn’t just for kids though. Public libraries have robust programs for young adults and adults as well. You’d be surprised at some of the activities and prizes offered for adult readers. When you participate, you get the added bonus of becoming a reading role model for your children.

Most Authentic Antico Pizza Napoletana – with three locations in the metro area – offers a small but very authentic menu. They do not allow substitutions or specific toppings on half of your pizza, but if you are willing to trust their pizza expertise, your tastebuds will be pleased. Giovanni Di Palma, Antico’s founder and chef, centers all of his culinary decisions around what would be true to Italian cuisine. Varasano’s Pizzeria is another establishment where keeping it authentic is key. The Buckhead restaurant is one of several pizzerias in the U.S. that make dough the old-fashioned way, using only natural sourdough yeasts, fermented for several days, which makes the pies very thin and delicate. They offer a variety of specialty pies, but you can also make your own.

Most Kid-Friendly

Any Way You Slice It!

Morningside’s newest pizzeria, Pielands, was designed with families in mind. Owner Billy Streck says that he wanted the place to have a nostalgic feel for parents and be fun for kids. “The first thing that comes to mind from when I was a kid is that my grandfather and dad had a pizzeria, and there were always arcade games,” he says. Pielands has its own game machine with free play, so there’s no added cost for families. Streck also notes he wanted the menu to be kid-friendly; they offer pizza by the slice and soft serve ice cream, which are perfect for grab and go in this walkable neighborhood. Pielands also offers round and square pizzas. “We realize that kids really prefer the square pies,” says Streck. “The pieces are easier for little hands to pick up.” In addition to traditional cheese and pepperoni, Pielands serves a cheeseburger pizza called The McDowell. “We’ve had more families order that pie than any other,” he says. An Atlanta staple with seven locations across the metro area, Fellini’s Pizza is a kid-friendly classic. The no frills restaurants make it easy for families to feel comfortable even if the kids are having a hard time sitting still. Pizzas are available in a few sizes or by the slice and you can add a simple salad to round things out. Plus, with the highest priced large pizzas on the menu being around $25, you can feed the whole family without breaking the bank!

Gooey cheese. Savory sauce. Your favorite toppings. Yes, we are talking pizza! And, not just your average pizza – these are some of the best pizza places metro Atlanta has to offer. Best Delivery With more than 30 locations in the metro Atlanta area, Johnny’s Pizza can deliver a delicious and hot pie to your house. Their hand-tossed, New York style pizzas are a favorite among our readers who also love the variety of toppings available. Cauliflower crust and slices are now available for delivery, as well as a full kids’ menu, which comes in handy if you have picky eaters. Their online ordering system is easy to use and lets you customize each pizza, including any special instructions.

Best Patios

Best Carry-Out Pizza

Spring is the perfect time for patio eating; here are some of our favorite pizza place patios. Vintage Pizza’s Dunwoody location has a covered patio you can enjoy, rain or shine. Plus, on Tuesdays you can get special deals after 5 p.m. when you dine in. Kirkwood’s Urban Pie offers a ton of outdoor seating, perfect for large families. Known for their thin and crispy crust, you can choose from pesto, alfredo or marinara for the sauce on your pizza. In Milton, Campania’s covered patio is spacious and has heaters for when the evenings get chilly. Their spianci e carciofi pizza is like spinach-artichoke dip on a pizza.

Midtown’s Varuni Napoli has an authentic menu and scrumptious pies. Check them out for the ultimate carry out experience – their Margherita Pizza Kit. It comes with one can of Varuni branded tomatoes, four balls of dough, flour, basil, Pecorino Romano, buffalo mozzarella, and olive oil imported from Sorrento, Italy. You have order it a day ahead of time. This carry-out option is great for the whole family to get involved with making dinner and memories. You can also add a cannoli kit to your carry-out order for a sweet ending with an Italian dessert.

Best Gluten-Free Pizza Being on a gluten-free diet should not mean you can’t enjoy pizza. Blue Moon Pizza takes that seriously. The establishment, with locations in Buckhead, Marietta, Sandy Springs and Smyrna, has an entire gluten-free menu, which details the ingredients found in their crust. Blue Moon’s GF crust is also free of egg, caesin, soy, rice, and nuts for people with other types of food allergies, and they offer dairyfree cheese. Plus, for all the chocolate lovers out there, they have gluten-free brownies for dessert.

Best Vegan Pizza When you’re looking for a plant-based pizza that still has all the flavor and textures of a traditional pie, there are two places you won’t want to miss: Firepit Tavern and Ammazza. Firepit Tavern is located in Grant Park and created by Atlanta native Leslie Cohen. “Since pizza is my favorite food, and it is one of the most popular ways to share a meal with a large group, it just fit my concept. I love how versatile and creative you can get with the menu,” she says. “Chef Shaun Whitmer and I have both explored the world of veganism and seen how hard it is to get plenty of options.” Their vegan pies include options of a house-made ricotta “cheese,” as well as vegan friendly sauces and crust. “Both Chef Shaun and I agree that our vegan supreme is one of our best pizzas on the menu,” says Cohen. In Edgewood, Ammazza’s vegan menu features seven different pies all with their house-made cashew “cheese.” As an added bonus, all of their take-out containers are compostable.

Cosmo’s Pizza & Social

Best Date Night If you are looking for a fun adult-only atmosphere, you have to check out Cosmo’s Pizza & Social in Downtown Lawrenceville. For Cosmo’s Co-Owner Allisha Kelly, pizza is life. “It brings everybody together,” she says. “We opened Social, which is more of a fun, adult-only spot for a different feel.” An elevated sports bar environment, Social has a full menu of pizzas and small plates, plus adult-centric events like Whiskey & Cigar night and Wine Down events. They also offer family-friendly happenings on the Cosmo’s side, including things like their annual Easter pizza party with arts and crafts for kids. “There’s always something going on for everybody all the time,” Kelly says. For a quieter night out, Hearth Pizza Tavern in Sandy Springs offers intimate booths, low lighting, and a quaint patio. Their menu features adult-friendly appetizers like crispy Brussels sprouts with pancetta and PEI mussels available in two preparations. For pizza, elegant options like mascarpone mushroom cream with truffle fig balsamic may be a bit mature for kids, but perfect for an adult dinner. Seasonal craft cocktails, plus a full selection of wine and beer round out the night date experience.

Any Way You Slice It!

Most Creative Specialty Pizza When it comes to specialty pizzas, you want something out of the box – unique crusts and combinations of flavors you wouldn’t think to combine when you build your own pizza. Here’s where the chefs at 04W in Duluth and Glide Pizza in Inman Park come in. At 04W, they are celebrating the Detroit style pie, which is a thick crust pizza baked in special pans for a crunchy edge of crispy cheese. Add in fun names like Grandma Goes to Detroit, Tony Pepperoni and Uncle Junior, and we are in! Glide Pizza is known for the sourdough twang in their crust and the house-made pizza ranch and pickled peppers that accompany every full pizza. Their divided pies are a pizza lover’s dream – you can choose red sauce and garlic base (one for each half of the pizza) with unique toppings like fresh jalapeno, garlic and capers. Bonus, if you get your Glide Pizza delivered, they’ll bring it you by bicycle.

MOD Pizza

Best Dessert Pizza Who doesn’t love dessert? Fritti’s take on dessert with their Nutella pizza is too yummy not to mention. The combination of hazelnuts and chocolate are the perfect sweet ending to your meal. Don’t forget to choose a scoop of house-made gelato to accompany your dessert pizza! A Virginia-Highland neighborhood staple, the menu at Fritti also includes more than a dozen options for savory pies, salads, appetizers and more.

Most Affordable MOD Pizza is budget-friendly and family-friendly. With seven locations in the metro area, you can register for their rewards program for even more ways to save. Their menu features two sizes of pizza – 6 or 11 inches – and you can add an unlimited number of toppings (they have 30 to choose from) for a flat price. Prices are about $10 for the larger size pizza. They also offer a familysized build-your-own salad with unlimited toppings for $15.

Support Your School by Eating Pizza

We’ve all done it – sold wrapping paper, frozen pizzas, cookie dough or flavored popcorn in colorful tins. Your parents took the form to work and left it in the break room for their colleagues to purchase something to support you. Why not fundraise for school in a way everyone can enjoy? Chuck E. Cheese

Best for a Birthday For all of you 1980s babies that are now parents, this is not the Chuck E. Cheese (or ShowBiz Pizza) you were raised with. This is a modern take on the classic with plenty of games and opportunities to play. There are nine locations in the metro Atlanta area, and their birthday packages can be customized for your budget. Most of them include pizza, dessert/cake options, play time/tokens and balloons. If you want to add goody bags or a party host, you can!

HELPING HANDS Connecting Atlanta Communities How some organizations are positively shaping the lives of so many

by Tali Benjamin

A

ccording to a report from U.S. News & World Report, metro Atlanta ranks 55 on their list of top cities in the country to live in in 2021-2022. Their rankings are based on quality of life, home prices and the job market, among other things. While Atlanta is a great place for families to live, there are pockets of our population for which quality of life doesn’t rank very high. Food insecurity, transitional housing and access to educational and extracurricular activities is something many of us take for granted, but for our neighbors can be a harsh reality. And, with the recent shutdowns of schools and other service providers due to the pandemic, these gaps have widened. The good news is that the Atlanta community has many resources that help fill these needs to help ensure that people in our community are supported. “We are an integrated society and should work together as such,” says Amy Zeide, Founder & Co-Executive Director of Creating Connected Communities (CCC), a non-profit that provides life-enhancing programs for children experiencing hardship by empowering teens to become engaged community leaders and volunteers. “People think of certain areas, like the suburbs, of not having these realities, but that is perception versus reality.” There are many Title 1 schools in North Fulton County and East Cobb, which people traditionally think of as affluent areas of town. Zeide notes that many of the teens that work with CCC go to school with peers who are facing food insecurity and have no idea.

Knowledge is Power Being aware of this often-silent problem is key to being part of the solution as Christie Maloch, Co-Director of Snax Sax for Kids, a Ministry of Embry Hills UMC, has discovered over the past six years. Snax Sax works in partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank and five Title 1 schools to provide approximately 200 children with healthy, shelf-stable food over the weekend. “About 1 in 7 kids are food insecure in our zip code,” Maloch says. Second Helpings Atlanta is a non-profit focused on rescuing food to provide meals to food insecure families. “In 2021 alone, our team was able to rescue 3,611,607 pounds of fresh, surplus food to create 3,009,672 equivalent meals provided from rescued food,” shares Executive Director Andrea Jaron. The pandemic increased the number of families in need of food while presenting challenges to SHA’s model for providing services. “When our volunteer drivers were sidelined due to COVID, the organization partnered with Goldberg’s Fine Foods who ‘loaned out’ their employees to temporarily drive routes, so that those in need still received the support needed,” says Jaron.

No one should have to choose between paying a bill or buying fresh food, yet 25% of metro Atlantans don’t live within a half-mile of a grocery store and 30% of Atlanta children are born into poverty. Odyssey Atlanta

During COVID, the Snax Sax team also realized that they could not serve their community in the traditional way since the DeKalb County public schools were closed, so they started a weekly family meal pick-up process instead. “This was only time we got to interact with families,” says Maloch. “It helped us realize we needed to translate our communication to Spanish because so many of the people don’t speak English as a first language.”

Family Matters Supporting the whole family is something Erica Gwyn, the Head of School at Seven Oaks Academy in Gwinnett County, is acutely aware of and was the basis for her to transition the academic focus of her school to Montessori learning. “In 2019 in our county, 52% of students starting kindergarten were not kindergarten ready,” notes Gwyn. “This led me to start research to solve this problem.” She realized that many of her students come from Spanish-speaking homes and/or ones with socio-economic challenges. “It’s up to us to meet the needs of our community and support them,” says Gwyn. By converting her program to Montessori, she has been able to break down barriers and create a space in which every child can learn and spark creativity. The Montessori approach allows the students to learn self-regulation skills. “The program helps children identify the emotion and allows the teachers to help students sort out those emotions and create meaningful relationships with the students,” says Gywn. “We have also been able to teach the parents some of these basic tenants of the program to connect the school learning to the home environment.” Cont’d on next page

HELPING HANDS Connecting Atlanta Communities

Snax Sax

Access to quality educational experiences, like those Gwyn is providing, is critical to helping children overcome circumstances over which they have no control. The facts for those in struggling communities is that incarceration rates are higher, life expectancies are lower, and academic performance is far behind students in higher socio-economic environments. Odyssey Atlanta is also trying to bridge this gap; the non-profit strives to reinforce the academic performance by supporting the whole child. “Our project-based learning model brings learning to life,” shares Executive Director Jeff Cohen. “Our first graders learn about fish by visiting the Georgia Aquarium, designing their own fish and then designing a class aquarium. Odyssey Atlanta supports students in first through twelfth grades with the goal that each student graduates from college. During the pandemic, participating families received learning kits, food, school supplies, books, laptops and hot spots so that learning could remain a focus. This summer, they are back at capacity serving 375 students. When we come together as a community to support one another, we all benefit from the results. Teaching our children about the people around them and ensuring they understand how they can help from a young age can create real change. “It’s not just about resource distribution,” says Zeide. “The real impact is around the community and relationships. That is what has long-lasting impact.”

How You Can Help n Be aware. “You need to be aware of community needs to be part of that support network,” says Zeide. “Explain to your kids who are the people in our community and what is happening right outside of our doors.” Maloch says there are signs, including irritability and hoarding food, you can look for if you suspect a child that you know is food insecure. n Talk to your kids. There are age-appropriate ways to make your children aware of what their peers may be facing. “You can ask them, ‘Do you ever go to school and not eat breakfast… imagine that Friday lunch at school was your last meal until Monday morning. How would you feel?’” says Maloch. These at-home conversations are where you can stress understanding and teach empathy to your children. “The more connection our young people feel to others, the more this idea of giving and being part of the community will be part of who they are as adults,” says Zeide. “They can take this passion with them to wherever they live in the next steps of their lives.” n Get involved. Outreach work is more appropriate for older children – middle school and up – but there are ways the whole family can help. Become a driver for Second Helpings Atlanta (and have your kids ride along), purchase supplies, advocate for educational equality, or ask your school if there are communities in need in your area. There are also many non-profits you can support by making donations that help them positively impact our community.

n The Walker School

Through an intentional, systematic and multisensory approach to learning, Stepping Stones Preschool creates pathways to success for students experiencing speech and/or language delays. This multi-disciplinary program is focused entirely on maximizing the brain development of students from 3 to 5 years of age. Speech-language pathologists, education specialists, occupational therapists and assistant teachers work together to ensure that each child becomes an active, engaged learner prepared for elementary school. Research-based practices focus on language and pre-literacy, math, science and physical development. Enrichment classes include art, music, media, PE and OT-PE. Extended-day and early-care programs are available. atlantaspeechschool. org/schools/stepping-stones; 404-233-5332.

Learning how to learn is one of the greatest gifts a child can receive. At Sage School, students grades K-6 are presented with tools and strategies to unlock the code of the English language. Language instruction and Orton-Gillingham remediation form the core of the education of a Sage School student. While the approach is structured, sequential and cumulative, it is also individualized to meet the needs of the learner. Rather than rote learning, instructors address the language cognitively, teaching students how language works. A Sage School classroom provides individualized instruction to meet the students’ needs in the areas of encoding, spelling, handwriting, written expression, vocabulary and reading comprehension. sageschool.net; 678-318-3588.

The Walker School New Avenues Dyslexia Program serves children in grades 1-5 with dyslexia who have above average academic aptitude and a strong desire to fulfill their educational goals. Specialized classroom spaces and Orton-Gillingham certified teachers focus on each student’s unique gifts to close the gap between cognitive potential and academic achievement. New Avenues provides opportunities for remediation and repetition with an emphasis on connected learning. Students are immersed in Walker’s college-preparatory environment, participating in co-curricular classes, lunch, recess and after-school activities with their grade-level peers. At Walker, students are supported, engaged and known, making it a perfect school for families with varied learning needs. thewalkerschool.org; 770-427-2689.

WHIMSICAL EXPERIENCES An elaborate fairy village hidden in the woods. A rock garden of castles. An enchanted forest. A mountaintop trail filled with gnomes and fairies. Check out some of these whimsical spots, which are only a short drive away, then extend the fun with some creative crafts at home. Halcyon Fairy Village

The Halcyon Fairy Village is a magical spot that invites children (and adults) to play. Visitors are invited to move things around, bring their own fairy houses and decorations and creative touches to the fairy village. Not only is the fairy village full of fairies, gnomes, trolls, unicorns and other mythical creatures, but it is a place meant for imagination and creativity. There are tunnels, walkways, trees with faces, little tree stump chairs meant for children and adults. Tucked in the woods, the fairy village borders a stream and is often decked out for different holidays. Located off the Greenway in Forsyth County (exit 12 off 400), the Halcyon Fairy Village was created by Halcyon resident Dan O’Hara. Since he was a boy, O’Hara dreamed of creating an elaborate fairy village. O’Hara, who volunteers with many community organizations, researched ideas, visited many other fairy villages, and concocted detailed plans before starting the Halcyon fairy village. Maps to the fairy village can be found at RBM of Alpharetta and there is also one posted on a board in the Halcyon Market Hall. If parking at Halcyon, the fairy village is about ¼ milewalk on the Greenway. visithalcyon.com

Sawnee Mountain Fairy Trail

Not far from the start of the Sawnee Mountain Visitor Center, is a wooded fairy trail. The trail begins at the visitor center and winds around past a tree house before reconnecting with the main trail to the top of the mountain. Along the fairy trail are miniature houses, caves, and gemcovered meeting spots, perfect for fairies. The houses can be found in trees, off the trail, and in small clusters. Sometimes there are remnants left of fairy parties, meals and meetings. Visitors are welcome to add their own touches to the fairy trail. Created about 10 years ago by Girl Scout Troop 13730, the trail is a perfect incentive to hike and enjoy nature. Sawnee Mountain Preserve. forsythco.com

The Village at Indian Springs Enchanted Forest

The Village at Indian Springs Enchanted Forest was designed to pay homage to different areas of the world, including Asia, Africa, South America, Australia and Europe. Along the trail, visitors will discover gnomes, fairies and other tiny mystical creatures. In the middle of the gardens is a playground and a splash pad (open in late spring and summer). thevillageatindiansprings.com

Rock City

Rock City is home to countless fairies and gnomes. The Enchanted Trail features Gnome Valley, Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village. Last year, a troll was sculpted out of a rock formation. And be on the lookout for tiny doors meant for fairies and gnomes. seerockcity.com

Calhoun Rock Garden

Meander through this tranquil garden of miniature medieval stone villages, which was was created as a place of prayer. Built behind the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, the church members and caretakers of the rock garden do not want visitors to refer to the garden as “magical,” but rather a place for peace, prayer and reflection. calhounadventistchurch.com — Kristy MacKaben

A TINY ADVENTURE

FAIRY CRAFTS

Explore Atlanta in an exciting way with a Tiny Doors ATL scavenger hunt. Director Karen Anderson was inspired to create this project based on the fairy doors in her hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they are a part of the city’s culture. There are more than 20 themed doors across metro Atlanta, and the spots include small props, such as animals, books, plants and more. Find a map or join a bike tour at tinydoorsatl.com.

n Fairy/Gnome Houses: Create simple gnome/fairy houses using just paper. Roll white paper into a tube and tape it. Cut out a tiny door from colored construction paper. Cut a circle from colored construction paper. Then cut a slit into the circle and tape to create a little mushroom roof. Cut out tiny circles and glue to the roof. n Fairy Wings: This craft can be made from white poster board and yarn. Draw large wings on the poster board, and cut out. Cut four holes (two in each wing). Thread the yarn in the holes, loop and tie to create straps so the wings can be worn. Decorate and color. n Little Flower Pot Gnomes: Tiny flower pots can be found at dollar/discount stores for this simple craft. Paint the flower pot. Use construction paper to form a hat, and white felt to make a beard. A small puff ball will be a nose.
