I

love Spring! There is nothing like eating dinner outside every night on the screen porch or being able to work from home and school while sitting outside together. The temperature is just right and it’s so nice to mix things up. Spring is also a great time to go camping. We asked three Atlanta families to share their strategies for camping with kids. Whether you brave the elements in a tent, keep comfy in a camper, or let someone else do the work by glamping (my personal choice), it’s a fun vacation and a good way to get outdoors. Kids have missed in-person birthday parties, so it’s exciting to be able to start party planning again. Our May issue has ideas for themed parties that can be used at home or out and about. Dinosaurs? Have a fossil dig at home or take a trip to Fernbank Museum. Movies? Plan a snack-filled viewing at home or head to a local drive-in. Check out our entertainment ideas and virtual party tips, too. Summer camps are back, and I’m as excited about it as my kids are. There’s still time to reserve a spot at a day or overnight camp – read our list of top camps on page 45. Visit atlantaparent.com for even more great options. Atlanta families are ready for spring and summer activities and events. The Renaissance Festival and Shrine Circus are two favorites. Strawberries are ripe; check out our list of farms and plan a family ‘u-pick’ outing. Also, water parks are opening this month and are a great way to have fun outside. Let us know about your family’s spring plans! Visit our Facebook page, find us on Twitter, or email editor@atlantaparent.com.

MOMS! Make YOURSELF a Priority by Sarah Lyons

Raising kids is one of the most life-changing and rewarding times of your life, but it can also be exhausting and draining. Moms typically put their kids’ needs above their own, but moms need to make time for themselves. Use these seven ways to make yourself a priority. Find your tribe Having a group of friends that understand what it’s like to raise children, work, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and commit to a loving marriage is important for moms to feel “normal” and supported. Moms groups, online meetups, book clubs or church groups are great places to connect with other moms.

Set aside time Between running errands, extracurricular activities, housework and spending time with your kids, it can be hard to set aside time for yourself. Spending time alone, with your spouse (without your kids), and with friends is so important for moms to feel energized for another day. Add time for you to the family calendar to assure that it happens on a regular basis and any child care needs are met.

Exercise A good exercise routine not only keeps you healthy and fit, but it can also help you feel better about yourself, as well as give you an extra energy boost for the long days 12 Atlanta Parent    May 2021

of mothering. Exercise can also give you a chance to listen to a podcast, audiobook or music while working out. If your exercise takes you outside, you get an added boost of Vitamin D, which has been proven to help you feel happier too.

Treat yourself Moms work hard. Allow yourself a treat such as a coffee, a new outfit, a fresh haircut, pedicure or a sweet treat on occasion. Giving yourself permission to treat yourself can boost your mood and acknowledge that you work hard and deserve something special. You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money; it’s more about putting yourself first on occasion.

Talk to someone Sometimes we just need someone to talk to about our feelings, and share the details of everyday life. Find a friend or family member to chat with on a regular basis. Some may find it helpful to talk to a counselor if you have a lot to work through, have dealt with depression or feel like you could use some unbiased advice.

Take up a hobby What do you love to do? Many moms find they have forgotten the hobbies they used to enjoy prior to kids. Seek out an old hobby or find a new one – reading, running, sewing, scrapbooking – whatever activity gets you excited. Whether you do your hobby with a group of friends or on your own, you will not regret making time for something that is important to you.

Ask for help Moms are used to helping others and many of us have a hard time reaching out for help. However, when a friend asks, we are the first to offer assistance. Give others a chance to help you: set up a carpool so you are not always the one playing taxi with the kids for their after school activities; accept help when offered; or trade babysitting with a friend, so you can have a much needed date night. If your significant other offers to help out around the house, let them, even if it isn’t exactly the way you would have done it. atlantaparent.com

SIX WAYS TO KEEP KIDS LEARNING THIS SUMMER by Mary Williams

School’s almost out, and kids are ready to kick back and take a break. Don’t let them lose academic ground – prevent the “summer slide” by keeping their minds active this summer. They’ll be having so much fun, they won’t realize they’re learning!

1

READ EVERY DAY

2

BE A SCIENTIST

Make a special place for kids to read. This could be a corner with a soft rug and lots of pillows, a cozy bean bag chair or a hideout with a canopy. Outdoors, set up a teepee (look online for DIY ideas), hammock or create a spot under a shady tree.

Have fun in the kitchen! Cook a new dish, bake a treat or blend up a smoothie. Kids can learn about measuring and fractions, following recipe instructions and chemical reactions.

Kids can record their progress and earn digital prizes with online summer reading programs like Scholastic (scholastic.com) and Magic Tree House (magictreehouse.com). Look for more programs at your local bookstore or library.

Head outside for some experimenting! Look online for at-home STEM experiment ideas. Find instructions for making a homemade geyser, a mousetrap car and more at stevespanglerscience.com.

Create your own summer reading club with incentives for reaching a goal, like reading 30 minutes a day for a week or reading a set number of books. Rewards could include a pizza and movie night, a trip to get ice cream or a small toy. Learn more about a favorite author; many popular kids’ authors have websites with activities, games, book previews and printables.

Have fun with a sciencethemed subscription box – two to check out are creationcrate.com and bitsbox.com. Each has materials for electronic projects, coding activities and more.

3

TAKE A VACATION WITHOUT LEAVING HOME Have kids choose a destination and research its location, landmarks and how to get there. Make a travel scrapbook with local wildlife, interesting facts and customs. Try a far-off locale like Fiji, New Zealand or Egypt! Go on a virtual tour of Crater Lake National Park, the National Mall, Yellowstone, the Statue of Liberty and more at nationalparks.org. Choose a cuisine and explore it! Try Cuban sandwiches or Indian food at a local restaurant. Choose a different country each week and plan an international dinner night with themed food and decorations. Cont’d on next page

SIX WAYS TO KEEP KIDS LEARNING THIS SUMMER

GET CREATIVE

GO ON A FIELD TRIP

THE GAME IS ON

Encourage kids to do something artistic – paint a self-portrait, make a collage or sculpt with clay. Look for online tutorials or book-and-craft kits to learn knitting, sewing or making LEGO robots.

Explore the science of how things work, natural phenomena and more at Tellus Science Museum (tellusmuseum.org), Fernbank Museum (fernbankmuseum.org), the Children’s Museum of Atlanta (childrensmuseumatlanta.org), or the Museum of Aviation (museumofaviation.org).

Turn off the screens and break out the board games! Classics like Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Sorry and Scrabble Junior can improve math and reading skills, as well as concentration, strategy and teamwork.

Make puppets using items you have around the house, like socks, paper bags, craft foam or felt. Add a storyline and a theater made from a large cardboard box and perform a show for family, create a video or invite friends to an online presentation.

Learn more about Georgia’s history at the Southern Museum (southernmuseum.org), Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield (nps.gov/kemo) or the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site (nps.gov/malu).

Encourage your kids to write their own story, keep a journal or create a blog. Interview grandparents or other relatives about their lives and put their stories in writing.

Visit Zoo Atlanta (zooatlanta.org), Chattahoochee Nature Center (chattnaturecenter.org) or the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary (yellowriverwildlifesanctuary. com) for an up-close look at nature, local wildlife and animals from around the world.

Learn to play a musical instrument, compose a song, or make up a dance routine. Check with a local music or dance studio for camps or summer lessons, or look for inspiration online.

Kids can learn about art (and be inspired to create their own masterpieces) at the High Museum of Art (high.org), Michael C. Carlos Museum (carlos.emory.edu) or the Booth Western Art Museum (boothmuseum.org).

Chess teaches kids to think ahead and strategize. KidChess (kidchess.com) has online games, clubs and lessons for all skill levels. At home, Story Time Chess: The Game is a great way for kids as young as 3 years to get started. Card games are a great way to reinforce math skills. Grab a deck and start a game of go fish, spoons or crazy eights; look online for games kids of all ages can play.

Wardlaw School serves bright children grades K-6th with dyslexia by building the complex language, literacy, and social skills necessary to master future academic settings and succeed in life beyond school. Wardlaw professionals create an educational environment designed to help each child reach his or her full potential in school and in life. The Howard School’s story began in 1950, when an amazing woman named Marian Howard changed the landscape of education in Atlanta by creating an educational world with no boundaries, labels or diminished expectations. Howard worked with Dr. Hermon Martin, Georgia’s first child psychologist, to plan a school specifically for children with learning differences. The Howard School grew into the transformational program it is today – a full and robust academic program for grades K-12, in which an interdisciplinary team of experts come together to make learning meaningful for children with language-based learning differences. howardschool.org; 404-377-7436.

How Do You CAMP?

by Sherry V. Crawley

Like so many aspects of parenting, camping with kids is a state of mind. You can decide you are cold, dirty and uncomfortable, or you can embrace the experience and find joy in the time together. There are many things you can do to make camping fun, and even luxurious! There’s more than one way to camp, and there are resources available to help you find the right camping style for your family and try out new ones. With some preparation and a spirit of adventure, camping can be an affordable vacation option that brings your family closer to nature and to each other. We spoke with three Atlanta-area families who have enjoyed camping more than ever over the past year. Check out their different approaches, and use their tips and tricks to make a plan to take your family camping! 26 Atlanta Parent    May 2021

The Libby Family: The Comforts of a Camper Mom Stephanie, dad Kasey, Gus (10), and Leo (8) live in Virginia Highlands.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS The freedom of camping became so important during this season of “No.” At home, we were constantly telling our kids no – no school, no activities, no playing with friends. We watched our kids grow more independent and adventurous. They learned to make campfires, kayak and jump into lakes from rocky cliffs. n  How do you camp? A few months into COVID, we bought a camper to tow behind our small SUV. It comfortably fits the four of us plus our giant dog. We have beds, a kitchenette, a bathroom, and heat and air conditioning. n  How do you prep? We keep the camper stocked with gear and supplies. All we really have to do is grab clothes and food and hit the road. We don’t worry about weather with the camper – in fact, if rain is in the forecast, the parks are less crowded. n  Where do you camp? We frequent state parks because of amenities like electricity and water hook-ups, but also quick access to adventure. You can hit the trails early before the crowds and enjoy kayaking, mountain biking, fishing and other activities. I also feel secure with rangers and other staff around. n  What do you eat? The same meals every trip! It makes planning easier, and eating the same dinners became a comforting ritual. Dinners include hot dogs, nachos or chili – and (obviously) s’mores. atlantaparent.com

The Cox Family: Happy Glampers

Mom Jennifer, dad Chris, and four kiddos ages 2, 3, 5 and 6, live in Euharlee.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS Instead of just pictures in a text book, my children have been able to see a shooting star while laying outside our tent. They got to watch and listen to a woodpecker on a nearby tree and learn about the different types of birds and trees that are native to our area. We’ve been on many vacations with our children, but we feel most connected to them when we step outside the hustle and bustle and away from technology and go camping. Glamping just means I now don’t have to wake up with an aching back in the morning and I get my coffee before the littles wake up – hallelujah!

RANGER EVONNE’S TOP FIVE CAMPING TIPS

n  How do you camp? My husband took me on my first camping adventure when I was pregnant with our second child. After a sleepless night in a thin sleeping bag on the ground, I knew there had to be a better way. Glamping offers the sights and sounds of the great outdoors but with a comfy, cozy bed ... and did I mention air conditioning?

1 2

n  How do you prep? We’ve found contingency plans are important. On a recent trip, we got three days of torrential downpour. It actually turned into an incredibly special time; we read stories, played board games, had dance parties – things we rarely have “time” for at home. We were thankful we brought along some weather-friendly indoor activities “just in case.” n  Where do you camp? There are many options for glamping in Georgia. One we have enjoyed is with Georgia Glamping. They have sites on Lake Lanier and Clarks Hill Lake.

3 Photo by Jim Hansard Photography

n  Favorite camping meal? My husband makes delicious chicken and dumplings in our cast iron dutch oven over the open fire. We bring shredded cooked chicken; chopped onion, carrots and celery; chicken broth and seasonings, and combine it with pieces of canned biscuits until cooked through. It’s the perfect camping comfort food.

4 5

Book a campsite 6 months or more in advance. The demand for campsites is high, and having dates on your calendar helps build excitement. Create a simple meal plan and prep food in advance. Think about the resources you will have – water, electricity, a camp stove – and plan meals to maximize time and safety. Before leaving home, chop veggies, precook or freeze meat so it will thaw during your trip, organize meals into individual bags, and pack your cooler with the things you will need last on the bottom. Have a gear plan. An air mattress or cot is essential for comfort; if you don’t get any sleep, camping isn’t fun! A camp stove is a must for most families, because cooking over an open flame isn’t always allowed and can be unsafe. If your site has electricity, an electric kettle is a good piece of gear to have – for morning coffee, instant oatmeal and other easy meals. My favorite gear is an electric cooler for food only, and an ice chest for drinks. Observe good camping etiquette. Don’t walk across other campsites. Remember sound travels outdoors – closing a car door at 11 p.m. is louder than you think. Be speedy in the bath house and clean up after yourself. Camp sustainably – avoid using single-use plastic cutlery, disposable plates, etc. Camping is vacation – plan accordingly! Take advantage of guided hikes and programs. Georgia State Parks has a great Junior Ranger program; pick up a booklet for your kiddos and let them earn a unique pin at every park. And it’s okay to leave your campsite to explore nearby attractions; just zip up your tent and don’t leave valuables in sight. Evonne Blythers Lapsey has worked with Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, Keeping It Wild, Georgia State Parks and others. She is an expert camper, skilled naturalist and respected environmental educator – and she’s visited every Georgia State Park!

How Do You CAMP? The Kortemeier Family: Backwoods Fun Mom Cheryl, dad Karl, Milo (12) and Ollie (7), live in Decatur.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

It makes us so happy when we make the effort to go camping, and the kids spend their time chasing grasshoppers and fireflies, reading and playing hide and seek rather than playing video games. The joy we experience when connecting with nature is invaluable. It is fun to camp with another family or two. If there are multiple kids of different ages, they can band together and enjoy a little freedom. Our kids love to roam around and discover creeks and streams, build forts and play games. The independence is really good for them and gives tired parents a chance to catch their breath! n  How do you camp? We’ve been camping for years, including our boys. We share a large teepee tent. However, in the next year or so, we’ll probably bring a kid tent and a grownup tent. It takes a good bit of work to pack your gear, set up camp and clean up afterward. But that relaxing time in between makes you feel refreshed in a way that’s hard to find elsewhere.

WHAT TO PACK n  How do you prep? If you’re backpacking, you have to carry everything. Every ounce makes a difference! However, you also have to think about the “what ifs” and plan accordingly. Embrace the discomfort. There is something about being away from home and outdoors that is challenging but rewarding.

When packing for a camping trip, it’s important to be well prepared. In addition to your clothing, toiletries, food, ice and cooler, here’s a basic checklist of what to pack for a family camping trip. n  Compass n  Trail maps of the area n  Binoculars n  Flashlight with extra batteries and bulbs n  Camp lantern

n  Waterproof and lightweight tent

n  Where do you camp? We like state parks and U.S. Forest Service campgrounds. We prefer campsites that require a short hike in, giving us more room.

n  Extra food

n  Ground insulation for sleeping

n  Extra clothing, including raingear

n  Sleeping bag and sleeping pads

n  First-aid kit

n  Large plastic/waterproof tarp

n  Plenty of bug spray; citronella candles

n  What do you eat? We enjoy menu planning for camping, and the kids usually plan and prepare at least one meal. When we are backpacking, we lean toward healthy dehydrated meals, dried fruits and vegetables and a lot of nut mixes. And we love to make Silver Turtles! Wrap sliced vegetables, protein of choice and olive oil/seasoning in two sheets of foil and cook it over campfire coals.

n  Tablecloth for picnic table at camp site

n  Small cooking kit, a cup and cooking utensils

atlantaparent.com

n  Sunglasses and sunscreen n  Small tool kit, pocketknife n  Waterproof matches

n  “Mess kit” for each camper; or plate, cup and eating utensils for each n  Stove for cooking

n  Barbecue tools and charcoal

n  Outdoor play stuff, from butterfly nets to art supplies/sketch pads

n  Adequate supply of clean drinking water or a water purifier

n  Board games, cards, puzzles, etc.

n  Insect repellent, including DEET for ticks

n  Camping chairs Cont’d on next page

How Do You CAMP? A Guide to Yurts and Glamping in Georgia If you’re interested in connecting with nature and your family, but don’t want to stay in such an outdoorsy locale, glamping (glamorous camping) might be a better option for you. Staying in a yurt is more like glamping than camping, but not as luxurious as staying in a cabin for a more natural atmosphere. A lot of the parks in Georgia only have a few yurts, so you’ll need to book early.

WHERE TO GO:

Cooking Around the Campfire

Delight the family with these delicious campfire recipes.

BREAKFAST: Campfire Toasted Cinnamon Rolls Pop open a can of cinnamon rolls and divide them. Insert roasting prongs through the side of the cinnamon roll in the center of the bun, making sure it’s near the back of the prongs. Place your roll over the hot embers, rotating frequently on all sides for 8-12 minutes, depending on the heat of your campfire. Allow to cool slightly before removing from the prongs. dabblesandbabbles.com/campfire-toasted-cinnamon-rolls-2

LUNCH: Camping Quesadillas Spread 1 tbsp. salsa con queso over one side of a tortilla. Place 1/4 c. of an 8-oz. grilled and sliced chicken breast over the salsa con queso. Sprinkle 1/4 c. black beans and 1/4 c. cheese over the chicken. Fold tortilla to cover ingredients. Place on a piece of tin foil large enough to cover the quesadilla. Leave the ends open. Place on a grate directly over the campfire until cheese is melted and tortilla is crispy. cupcakediariesblog.com/camping-quesadillas

DINNER: Campfire Pizza Oil a cast iron pan. Take refrigerated pizza dough and spread it on the pan. Place on the fire and cook until the bottom has browned. Remove from the fire and flip the crust in the pan. Brush with pizza sauce and cover with cheese and your choice of toppings. Return to the heat and cook until the crust is done and toppings are warm. thekitchenmagpie.com/how-to-make-campfire-pizza

Six of Georgia’s state parks have yurts: Cloudland Canyon in Rising Fawn, Tugaloo in Lavonia, Fort Yargo in Winder, High Falls in Jackson, Sweetwater Creek in Lithia Springs and Red Top Mountain in Acworth. Yurts feature a deck, picnic table, grill/fire ring outside, furniture to sleep six, electrical outlets, large windows and locking doors. The yurts at High Falls, Tugaloo and Fort Yargo even have air conditioning. Find more information at gastateparks.org/uniqueaccomodations. Stone Mountain Park’s yurt rentals feature outside decks, picnic tables, a charcoal grill, metal fire pit and a water spigot. They also have log furniture, heat/air conditioning, electrical outlets, large windows, a skylight, ceiling fan and lockable doors, and can sleep up to five guests. Find more information at stonemountainpark.com/campground/ campground-sites-and-amenities/yurt-sites.

GO GLAMPING

Georgia Glamping Company offers a unique getaway option combining modern comfort with the great outdoors. These sites include safari tents, bell tents, treehouses and Geodesic Domes, and areas include hammocks, string lights, a fire pit, a charcoal grill, beds, heat/air conditioning, a mini fridge, coffee maker and electrical outlets. Locations include Lake Lanier at Shady Grove Campground and Clarks Hill Lake at Wildwood Campground. Find more information at georgiaglamping.com.

DESSERT: Campfire S’mores Banana Boats Cut four 12" sheets of foil. Make a deep lengthwise cut along the inside of each banana, being careful not to cut all the way through. Open slit to form pocket. Fill each banana with 2 tbsp. chocolate chips, 2 tbsp. marshmallows and 2 tbsp. graham cereal. Wrap each banana in foil, making sure that foil opening is on top. Using tongs, set wrapped bananas over campfire; cook 8-10 minutes. bettycrocker.com/recipes/campfire-smores-banana-boats/3b7bc701-ca09-41fd-893a77f031cdaaa2

PARTIES ARE BACK! HOW TO HOST A SUMMER BIRTHDAY BASH

Smaller is Better Due to social distancing regulations, don’t feel you have to invite all of your child’s classmates, teammates and family members. Instead, only invite a few close best friends to celebrate.

Pre-Party Adventure

Buy smaller trinkets and gifts for your kid to find before the party starts. Create a scavenger hunt or a treasure map with locations around your house and the yard for an exciting present activity.

Safer Eats

Use prepackaged food and utensils for a grab-and-go food area, such as bags of chips, juice boxes and granola bars. Set out hand sanitizer for kids to use before taking their food. Instead of cake, serve individual cupcakes, brownies, cookies or donuts for each party goer. For a special treat, order a popsicle from King of Pops, and if you want to splurge, you can even have the vendor come to your party location.

Get Outdoors

Plan a picnic and a day of outdoor activities at a local park, such as Piedmont Park, Chastain Park, Brook Run Park or SwiftCantrell Park. Or celebrate the outdoors with a camping-themed spend-the-night party in your backyard. Each child will have their own tent, and you can set up stargazing equipment for a cool nighttime activity. If you want to hold the party outdoors without the hassle of planning, leave it to the experts by holding a party at Treetop Quest, Zoo Atlanta, Chattahoochee Nature Center or Dunwoody Nature Center. On the Big Screen

Fun with Heights

Make a movie night a birthday party.

If your child is a daredevil, take them to new heights with these activities.

Activity

Serve snacks for the movie in the Easy Movie Night Box Craft from Made to be a Momma. Wrap cereal boxes with wrapping paper. Use cup and juice boxes to create a template for the holes, and cut out with an Exacto knife. Then, fill your box with your delicious snacks. madetobeamomma. com/easy-movie-night-box-craft

Make a toy parachute with a plastic grocery bag, a plastic or paper cup, string and scissors. Cut off the handles of the bag, and then cut in half, making two large squares. Poke four evenly spaced holes around the top of the cups. Cut out four 12" pieces of string. Tie the string to the corners of the bag, and tie through each hole. Then, stand on a high place to see the parachute drop. engineeringemily.com/make-aparachute-steam-activity-for-kids/

Recipe

Fill your box with Caramel Popcorn with Peanut Butter. Preheat oven to 250°F. Heat 2 tbsp. canola oil in a pot over mediumhigh heat. Add 1/2 c. unpopped corn kernels and cover. Cook for about four minutes or until the popping stops. Remove from heat and add 1/2 c. peanuts. In a medium saucepan, combine 2/3 c. brown sugar, 2/3 c. light corn syrup, 2½ tbsp. unsalted butter and 1/2 tsp. salt. Bring to a boil and cook for three minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 c. creamy peanut butter and 1 tsp. vanilla. Pour over popcorn and mix to coat. Spread on a baking sheet and bake for one hour, stirring every 15 minutes. eatwell101.com/peanut-butter-caramel-popcorn-recipe

For a delicious snack, make an Airplane Propeller Banana Snack using bananas, chocolate chips, clementines and toothpicks. Start by placing a toothpick into the banana on either side. Cut up clementines lengthwise to make the propellers, and stick the clementines onto the toothpicks. Place a chocolate on top as the nose of the propeller. sprinklesomefun.com/airplanepropeller-banana-snack

PARTY!

Use these themes and ideas to hold a party at home or at an Atlanta attraction.

Shoot for the Stars

Dinosaur Dive

Your child astronaut will love celebrating space exploration with these ideas.

If you’ve got a young archaeologist, he’ll love these prehistoric dinosaur ideas.

Make a rocket out of recycled items, including a paper towel tube, cardboard cone, a mini paper cup, straws, cardstock, paper strips and cardboard scraps. Start by decorating the tube and cone with paint. After the paint is dry, decorate with paint, washi tape or stickers. Glue on the fins of the rocket and paint them. Add colored straws to represent the engine mount and a black circle for the control center. roseandrex.com/blogs/blog/ recycled-rocket

Reenact a fossil dig. Bury toy dinosaurs in sand and invite the kids to go on an archaeological dig using sand shovels or kitchen utensils. Or freeze dinos overnight in a shallow tray of water, and let kids drip warm water on them to “excavate.”

Make pretty sugar cookies that resemble the solar system. Use a boxed recipe to make round sugar cookies of different sizes. Once cool, decorate to look like the different planets, the sun and the moon using colored icing, glaze and sprinkles. Or, search for “Out of this World” sugar cookies on kickinitinthekitchen.com. See the stars at Tellus Science Museum’s Bentley Planetarium, tellusmuseum.org; or with a virtual show from Fernbank Science Center’s Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium, fernbank.edu.

Serve Dinosaur Bones. You’ll need two 5-oz. bags of yogurt pretzels, an 8-oz. bag of yogurt raisins, Easter grass and natural cupcake liners. Start by placing the grass on a platter. Fill the cups with pretzels and raisins to resemble dinosaur bones. tableandachair.com/dinosaurbones-party-snack

LET’S PLAY CROQUET! Family Fun, Fresh Air and So Much More

Warmer weather is here, and parents are looking for ways to get kids to play outside more and away from their screens. Have some backyard family time and create fun memories with a game of croquet. You can get your whole family involved in the sport (just don’t talk too much about the “olden” days when you were young). Croquet is much more than hitting a ball through a wicket. Here are a few benefits and tips for having fun: Everyone can play. Toddlers, kids, teens, parents and grandparents can all play. Croquet is a multi-generational game. If one person is too good at it, have them play one-handed or with the opposite hand. It’s inexpensive. Pick up a croquet set at a tag sale, flea market, thrift store or a used sports equipment shop. A croquet set includes 6 balls, 6 mallets, 9 wickets and 2 stakes. Setup is easy. An uneven or hilly lawn will add to the fun. Forget about regulation size playing area, fit it to your yard. If you live in an apartment, head for the park or the beach to play. Keep it going.

Play a game every night. Make a chart to track who wins first, second, third and fourth place. The chart order will change over time as players get better. Hold a tournament at the end of every week. Take photos of the gang in action and holding silly, homemade, reusable trophies.

Add more fun. One day can be hat day, another can be wear blue play day, costume day, etc. Have kids do a cartwheel, crab walk or some other trick before they hit their ball.

More Ways To Play

n  Pick up some used golf putters and balls to play golf croquet. n  Use soft inflatable balls as an alternative to wooden croquet balls.

Croquet Sets: Our Picks n  Pointyard Croquet Set: This set of six color-coded balls and mallets is good for beginners or experienced players. A carrying case makes storage easy. Available for $36.99 on amazon.com.

n  Add a few extra obstacles to your course for an extra challenge. n  For extra-large fun, try an oversize kick croquet set.

Make it a party. Serve a festive meal or snacks and drinks at “halftime.” Hotdogs, beans and s’mores are easy and fun. Play under lights after dark.

n  DealKits Premium Croquet Set: This six-player set is weather resistant and features sturdy, extra-long mallets. All components fit easily into the durable zippered carrying case. Available from amazon.com for $65.99.

Your kids will learn a lot. By playing croquet, children will learn hand-eye coordination, how to control their swing to send the ball where they want it to go, strategy to avoid having their ball hit by another player’s ball, taking turns, self-control and more. Your enthusiasm for games like croquet will inspire your children to want to play too. Make time to play together as a family and enjoy the summer. – Sarah Yale
