Baby-proofing, from bed, bath and beyond Your baby’s going to get a bump or two, despite your best efforts to head off an accident. Your job is to make sure the accident isn’t serious. These ideas, from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, will help you baby-proof your home. Anywhere n Don’t walk away from potential poisons; if you’re using laundry detergent, bleach, floor cleaners or other products, make sure they’re stored before you leave even for an instant. n Keep cleaners in any room on a high shelf and locked up. n Keep alcohol out of reach. n Be aware of where you place your purse so baby’s little hands can’t find cigarettes, cosmetics, matches or other fascinating dangers. n Some plants can be poisonous; keep them away from baby.

n Make sure cords on blinds and drapes are out of reach. n Cover unused electrical outlets and unplug cords you aren’t using and put them away. n Use safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs. n Check for lead paint, if your home was built before 1978; high lead levels can cause brain damage. n Install fire and carbon monoxide detection alarms to alert you in an emergency.

Bathroom n Keep medicines and vitamins in childresistant containers, out of reach and locked up. n Store cosmetics, colognes and mouth washes where baby can’t reach. n Lower the temperature in your home water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, to prevent accidental scalding. n Keep curling irons, hairdryers and heated appliances and their cords out of reach and away from the sink or tub.

Bedroom n Make sure the crib mattress is firm and flat; remove comforters or toys and soft products that might cause suffocation. n Remove hood and neck strings from children’s clothing, and don’t let them wear a necklace, scarf or anything around their neck that could get caught and pose a strangling hazard.

Kitchen n Cook on the back burners of the stove. n Keep food away from the edges of counters or tables. n Test microwaved food to make sure it’s not too hot.

The Right Camp for Your Child Overnight camps have themes to suit any taste, from general interest and nature camps to those specializing in computers, art, language, horseback riding, theater or sports, and from secular to religion-based experiences. Once you’ve determined the type of camp your child wants, here are other factors to consider. n How long has the camp been operating? Who manages the camp and what are his qualifications? n How is the staff screened and chosen? n Is there a medical person on staff? What happens if there’s an emergency? n What is the ratio of staff to campers? A 1:5 ratio is recommended for ages 4-5, 1:6 for ages 6-8, 1:8 for ages 9-14 and 1:10 for ages 15-17. n How is security maintained at the camp? n How many campers per session? n Is the camp co-ed or single sex? n What is a typical day’s schedule? n How much free time do kids have and how closely are they supervised?

n How are discipline problems handled? n If a child becomes homesick, what’s the camp’s policy on calling parents? n What does a week’s menu look like, and how does the camp handle food allergies or other dietary needs? n How much does the camp cost and is financial assistance available? n If special equipment or clothing is required, are those an extra cost or included in the camp fee? n Who can tell you about their child’s experience at this camp? Ask the camp for references and call or email the parents.

The American Camp Association can do some of the work for you. The ACA has accredited about 2,400 camps, checking such areas as food service, transportation, health care, emergency training and staff qualifications, and making sure the camps meet standards set by the industry. Choosing Childcare: Important Questions to Ask As a parent, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is choosing the right caregiver. You want your child to be in a healthy safe environment with plenty of stimulation and emotional support. Here are some of the most important questions you need to answer before allowing someone else to watch over your child. Caregivers n Are the childcare providers trained in child development and early education? n Do they have any accreditation? n Are there a sufficient number of trained adults present? n Is the caregiver warm and caring with the children? n Are you satisfied with the way the caregiver responds to a hurt or unhappy child? n Is there time for caregivers to give individual attention to each child? n Do you feel satisfied with the way toilet training, diapering and discipline are handled in this setting? n Have the caregivers been with the center long enough to create a stable environment for your child?

Car Seats Save Little Lives Any parent will tell you infant car seats are a hassle – but one well worth it when you consider that half of all children ages 1-14 who die in vehicle crashes either weren’t in a car seat or weren’t wearing a seat belt. How do you know if your child’s seat is installed correctly? Follow these tips from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, then make an appointment for a free inspection at a child safety seat fitting location near you, often a fire station or health department. You’ll find locations at gahighwaysafety.org/procamp.html and more information on car seat use at choa.org (search for auto safety).

Children younger than age 13 are always safer in the back seat. If you must put your child in the front seat, push the seat back as far as it will go and disable the airbag if the child is in a car seat.

n Children should ride in a rear-facing seat until age 2, or until they exceed the height or weight limit for the rear-facing car seat. Read installation instructions carefully. Safety seat harness straps should be snug and you shouldn’t use padding under or behind your infant in the car seat. At age 2, or when your child has outgrown the rear-facing seat, then you can use a forward-facing seat.

n Georgia changed its booster seat law, effective July 1, 2011. Children under age 8 who weigh less than 40 pounds and are shorter than 4 feet, 9 inches, must use a booster seat to keep their lap and shoulder harness in the right position, when riding in an auto, van or pickup truck. Children under age 8 who weigh at least 40 pounds and are 4'9" may use a lap and shoulder belt without the seat, or a lap belt if the vehicle is not equipped with lap and shoulder belts. Booster seats come in two varieties: a Backless BPB (belt-positioning booster) or a High-back BPB. Backless BPBs must be used on a vehicle seat with a built-in or adjustable head restraint. High-back BPBs should be used in vehicles with no head restraints.

n Say goodbye to the booster seat when your child can keep his back against the vehicle seat and his knees will bend over the seat edge, when his feet will rest flat on the floor or when the lap belt is low and snug across his upper thighs and the shoulder belt crosses the center of his chest and collarbone. Then make sure he buckles his seat belt before the vehicle moves.

n A LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) for vehicles made after Sept. 1, 2002, makes car seat installation easier. LATCH and seat belt installation are comparable as far as safety, but make sure you know how to use the LATCH system.

Take the Bite Out of Dental Care A dental drill isn’t something to be afraid of, but don’t expect your child to believe that when he’s sitting in a dentist’s chair and hears that high-pitched whine. You can make sure that sound isn’t necessary in his young life. Here’s what pediatric dentists recommend: n Start early. Wean your child from a bottle by age 1 – toddlers who use bottles longer to drink milk or juice are more likely to get tooth decay. n Start cleaning. As soon as teeth start to come in, wipe down gums and teeth after feedings with a soft, wet cloth. n Start a conversation. Ask for recommendations on pediatric dentists, or do your own research, checking websites and credentials of pediatric dentists near you and visiting their office. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry says your child should see a pediatric dentist before age 1. Many dentists don’t charge for your child’s first visit. n Start brushing. When teeth appear on the top and bottom, get a brush with a small head designed for little ones, and clean teeth while the child is lying down. If you use toothpaste, keep it the size of a pea. n Start the clock. When your child is able to stand to brush, you’ll need to brush his teeth for at least two minutes.

n Start supervising. Let your child take over the brushing when his motor skills are good, usually around age 6, but make sure he brushes at least two minutes. Many children’s toothbrushes have lights that glow or music that plays for the proper amount of time, or put on a CD that’s two minutes long. n Start flossing. You’ll have to do it at first, but your child can learn over time. n Start his life cavity-free. Most dentists recommend sealants on the child’s first teeth to prevent cavities, and on his permanent teeth when they start to come in. Sealants can prevent 90 percent of cavities. Getting dental cleanings and checkups every six months also will keep his teeth and gums healthy. n Study for the test. Start by getting and learning the Georgia Driver’s Manual. n Get a learner’s permit. Teens must hold a learner’s permit for one year and one day to be eligible for a Class D license at 16. Your teen can apply for one at age 15, with proof of age (birth certificate or other ID), a valid Social Security number and a Certificate of Attendance notarized by his school or proof of being home-schooled. If younger than 18 and not attending school, he must have a GED or high school diploma or be enrolled in college. (Students who drop out of school or commit a traffic infraction may have their permit revoked.) n Take him for testing. Your teen must pass a vision test and an exam on road rules and road signs, based on the Georgia Driver’s Manual, to get a learner’s permit. The $10 permit is valid for 24 months and allows your teen to drive with a licensed driver over age 21 in the front seat. n Teach him yourself. Have your teen do an online course with a DDS-approved

school, then complete the Parent Teen Driving Guide with him before he applies for a license. n Check into drivers’ education. Make sure the school is approved by the Georgia Department of Driver Services. Most schools provide 30 hours of classroom instruction and another six hours of behind-the-wheel training. Some offer online instruction. After that, you and your teen will need an additional 40 hours of driving time together, six of them at night, before he can apply for a license. Your insurance company likely will give you a discount if your child completes a drivers’ ed course. n Let him wait until age 17. If he can’t complete a drivers’ ed course in a classroom or online, he’ll have to wait for a license. n Get all the facts. Fire Safety for Families Fire strikes when you least expect it, sometimes in the middle of the night, touched off by lightning or bad electrical wiring, a smoldering cigarette, a candle left unattended. Here are some ways to be prepared. For more, see firesafety.gov.

Prevention n Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on all floors of your home and make sure batteries are replaced regularly. Replace alarms every 10 years. n Get your furnace inspected annually by a service professional and make sure you change filters regularly. n Make sure space heaters are three feet from anything that could catch fire, and turn them off at night. n Get your fireplace inspected annually, and use a screen to protect from sparks. n Don’t overload electrical outlets or run extension cords under rugs or behind heaters; replace frayed cords. n Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, and stay in the kitchen when you’re cooking. n Stop a grease fire by putting a lid on the pot; dousing the fire with water will make it spread. n Teach your children that matches and lighters are not toys and they shouldn’t be used when you aren’t present. Put them out of reach.

Preparing n Come up with an escape route for your family, from each room in your home, and practice the routes. n Buy chain ladders for upstairs rooms and practice using them. n If young children or elderly family members might need help escaping, decide who will assist them. n Agree on a meeting place outside the house so you’ll know everyone is safe.

Getting out n If fire strikes, get out first, then call 911 from a neighbor’s house or cell phone. n Check doors for heat before opening them. You might need to leave by a window instead. n If leaving by a door, crawl below the smoke to exit. If the door is hot, put a sheet under it to seal out smoke, then use the window to escape. If you can’t open the window, break it with a heavy object. n Don’t waste time trying to save valuables. Guide for First-time Hikers Here are a few tips to make your hikes more enjoyable. n Start with short, easy hikes. You don’t want to get too far down a trail only to realize that your kids are too tired to make it back. Look at the Internet or buy a hiking book beforehand so you can check the distance and difficulty level of each trail you want to try.

n Stay hydrated! This is perhaps the most important tip. You need to bring plenty of water with you, and make sure to have your young hikers drink it continuously throughout the hike. n Sunscreen is a must. Lather it on you and your children before leaving the house, and make sure to reapply generously throughout the day, even if it is not super sunny. n Wear appropriate gear. If you have never hiked before and are planning on wearing new shoes or clothes, break them in before the big day. New shoes

Start your hike fairly early in the day when the weather may be cooler. Special Ways to Say “Happy Birthday” to Your Child by Linda Jerkins n Hang up a special birthday flag or banner from your flagpole, porch or garage door. Personalize it so that the whole neighborhood will know there’s a birthday at your house. n Start a collection for your child. Some of the many options include: dolls, bells, piggy banks or stuffed elephants. Add to the collection each year. n After your child is asleep, decorate his or her bedroom with balloons, banners and streamers. n Hide clues around the house and have a treasure hunt. Use pictures and arrows on clues for children who can’t read yet. Lead them to presents, wrapped candy, money or inexpensive favors hidden around the house or yard. n Let your child choose the birthday menu, from appetizer to dessert. Set the table with a special placemat and dishes for the birthday child. For example, one family always uses red dishes for birthdays. n Wake your child up – gently – with a surprise pajama party. Have your guests arrive early, 6 or 7 a.m. wearing pajamas and slippers. Serve breakfast and cake. Hand out toothbrushes for favors.

Find a Perfect Pediatrician Lots of pediatricians are qualified and caring, but not all of them are right for you and your child. So how do you find the one to help you monitor your child’s health and well-being? Start with these guidelines from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The basics n Research online and ask friends, family or your own doctor to recommend a pediatrician. n Check credentials. The doctors you’re interested in should be board-certified in pediatrics, ensuring they have been trained at an accredited school and medical facility. You can find information through the Georgia State Board of Medical Examiners, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatrics. n Make sure the doctors have privileges to practice at a children’s hospital, should your child ever need to be hospitalized for accident or illness.

n Think about your questions ahead of time, and write them down so you’ll remember. Some questions you might ask: How many doctors are in your group? If my child is sick and needs to be seen today, what is your policy? What are your wait times for scheduling a routine visit? Is someone in your practice on call nights and weekends to handle my questions or an emergency? What is your childcare philosophy? Do you use nurse practitioners, and what is their role? How do you handle payment for services? Are all the doctors in your group part of my health insurance or managed care plan?

Make the right choice n Assess your rapport with the doctor. Does he or she feel like someone who’ll listen to your concerns and help guide your child’s growth and development? Do they seem knowledgeable about medicine? If you answer “yes” to both questions, then it may be the start of a long collaboration ensuring your child’s well-being. When to call a doctor n Your baby is under 3 months old and has a high fever, 104 degrees or more. n Your child is vomiting; children under age 1 have a high risk of dehydration. n Your child has breathing problems – breathing that’s too fast or labored, or trouble eating or sucking on a bottle. n Your child is irritable or lethargic, and something is not right with them. n Traditional treatments to soothe them don’t work.

Next steps n Narrow your choices down to two or three doctors near your home; if your child is sick, you don’t want a one-hour drive to the doctor’s office. n Make an appointment to see each of the doctors for an interview. Many doctors won’t charge for your initial visit.

Make play time a priority, just like times set aside for homework and music lessons. Don’t overschedule your child. An overwhelmed child is not a playful child. Remember the object of play is to have fun and let loose, not brush up on math or reading skills.

Parents can help boost their children’s intelligence, creativity, innovation and sense of optimism through play.

Make up a bedtime story with your kids. Use inspiration from real life to give your main character adventure. Remember, kids like understandable conclusions. The ending can teach a lesson or leave the character with a sense of accomplishment. Or not.

Tips for Better Digital Photos

With digital cameras, it’s easier today for parents to take exceptional pictures, rather than depending on a professional portrait studio. n Avoid red eye. Don’t use the flash on the camera, says photographer Sandra Coan. Instead, sit your child in front of a window and shoot from an angle to avoid back lighting; the natural light is very pretty. n Use distraction. “One of my favorite tricks when photographing babies is to put a sticker on their belly or foot,” Coan says. “They’ll spend a long time trying to get it off, and you’ll get some great candid-looking photos of them playing with their toes and tummies.” n Be mindful of the light. Shooting pictures outdoors can be difficult. The biggest mistake people make is putting their kids in bright sunshine. This causes big shadows on the face, as well as squinty kids. Look for a big patch of shade, where the light is even. Everyone will be happier. n Get down low. “You want to be down at eye level with the kids,” photographer Jonathan Payne says. “I spend a lot of time down on my stomach with the babies. As an alternative, use a bed or couch to get the kids at an easier level to photograph.” n Get close. “Fill the viewfinder with a face, or better yet just some details of your child, like their ears, hands or feet,” Payne says. “It’s important to figure out how close your camera will focus, and maybe even switch into the macro mode if it’s available.”

n Turn off your flash. “Nothing kills a nice photo like a blast of harsh light from the camera,” Payne says. “The flip side of this tip is that you need to find good light. Basically, look for big windows, with indirect light, like those facing north.” n Look for ideal locations. Other strong possibilities for taking superior photos in natural light include porches, doorways, or shady areas of the yard facing the open sky. n Have fun. Most importantly, just have fun and take a lot of photos. These little ones grow and change so quickly. Capture their moments with beautiful photos this season. – Kim Seidel

School Day Solutions Every child faces challenges with a new school year. These suggestions can help calm anxieties and get the school year off to a positive start. Challenge: A New Teacher n Solution: Develop a relationship with the teacher. Have a meeting with him or her as soon as possible. This will allow you to share your positive feelings about your child with the teacher and vice versa. Also, stay involved and volunteer when you can. This ongoing relationship will show you trust and like your child’s new teacher, making it easier for your child to feel the same way. If your child is in elementary school, have him prepare a handmade card or pick flowers to bring on the first day as an icebreaker. This will be an easy excuse to introduce himself to his new teacher. If your child is in middle school and will have multiple teachers, tell him to introduce himself to each new instructor as he enters the room. This way if he’s called on in class, it won’t be his first interaction with the teacher and will soothe his nerves. Challenge: A New School n Solution: If possible, take your child on a tour of the new school about a week before school starts. This way your child will know where her classroom is, where the rest rooms are, and how to navigate the hallways. If you can’t physically walk through your child’s first day, do so verbally at home. Call the school and ask them what time your child’s class will do certain things so you can coach your child ahead of time. Visualizing the day will ease your child’s fears of her new surroundings. Also, teach your child to be positive – a few lessons in relaxation techniques may come in handy if your child is still feeling anxious as the first day approaches. Deep breathing and telling herself “I can do this” are both good options. Challenge: New Kids n Solution: Before school begins, get a list of new classmates from your child’s school. Once you see the list, you’ll probably recognize a name or two. This will give you a chance to invite kids over for a play date and give the parents a chance to connect – maybe even develop a carpool. Why Choose Boarding Schools? While boarding schools are a small slice of the American educational system, they are not just for the elite or the troubled. Parents searching for the boarding school experience for their child have an extensive array of philosophies, lifestyles and teaching modes to choose from. n A School For Every Need: No matter the need or the interest, there is a school for every child. Sorting through the many programs, understanding the terminology, and sometimes even finding a spot in some classes can be challenging. Here is some information to get you started, and some questions you’ll want to ask as you research your options.

NAEYC Accredited Centers

Schools and childcare centers that have successfully been reviewed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) are awarded accreditation, which is valid for five years. There are 327 accredited centers in Georgia. Centers are evaluated on the following questions:

What is an Individualized Education Program (IEP)?

he IEP is a document that develops measurable annual goals and short-term objectives for a child receiving special education. It details the special educational services, and any necessary related supplementary aid that the school system will provide to a student with disabilities. Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) protects his right to an education in the least restricted environment, which can also mean

in the home area school with age and grade peers, if appropriate. Don’t be afraid to ask for what is best for your child. A team – including your child’s teachers and therapists, school and district faculty, and you – develops the IEP at a meeting, usually held in the spring. The best way to positively affect your child’s education is to keep track of his medical and educational records, and use them to prepare for a successful IEP meeting.

The following tips to make the most of your meeting are from The Georgia Advocacy Office. At the Meeting: n An IEP meeting can be intimidating to the parent. Plan to stay calm. Remember: Everyone wants what is best for the child. n You are a member of the team that makes the crucial decisions about the student’s education. Approach the IEP as a team player. n Bring someone with you! Another parent, a friend or neighbor can take notes and support you. You might want to tape the meeting. Inform the school of your plans.

n Make sure everything is written down and a parent-school communication plan established. If you are not satisfied or certain, take a copy of the plan to review before you sign your agreement.

n Keep the meeting positive for your child. Remember to focus on gifts, strengths and progress. n Make sure that the IEP goals for your child are reasonable and measurable – a child should make one year’s progress each year. Scrutinize the goals and identify strategies to achieve them. n Discuss modifications, disciplinary programs, non-academic activities, transition or supplemental services. The IEP and placement

Common Therapies for Special Needs Kids Numerous types of therapies exist, from physical therapy to play therapy, to help special needs children with everything from developmental delays to neuromuscular conditions. n Occupational therapy (OT): OT focuses on helping children cope with emotional, social and physical difficulties. It builds a foundation for the types of skills that children need to accomplish everyday tasks. A treatment program for children who have trouble sitting still, for example, may involve an obstacle course that helps improve handeye coordination. n Play therapy: Play therapy draws on the curative powers of play to help children with a broad range of social, behavioral, emotional and other developmental issues. The use of toys and activities have been shown to promote creative problem solving, improve social skills and foster learning and acceptable behaviors. n Physical therapy (PT): Through the use of exercises and physical activities, PT manages and improves patients’ physical limitations and helps them achieve the highest level of function possible. Specialized Therapies Other specialized forms are also available to children with a variety of special needs.

n Speech therapy: Children with speech delays, past hearing loss, craniofacial disorders such as a cleft palate, functional articulation and/ or phonological disorders often benefit from speech therapy. Treatment may incorporate reading, recognition games and other activities. For more, see American Speech-LanguageHearing Association at asha.org. n Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT is a structured form of therapy used to treat depression, anxiety, phobias and other mental disorders. It is based on the idea that thoughts cause feelings and behaviors. Treatment helps patients unlearn unwanted behaviors and discover new ways of responding to situations. n Hippotherapy: The word means “treatment with the help of the horse” and is often used to help improve posture, strength, balance, coordination and attention span. n Music therapy: This creative therapy uses music and music activities to address an individual’s physical, emotional, cognitive and/or social needs. n Aquatic therapy: Also known as hydrotherapy, this discipline uses the unique physical properties of water to facilitate rehabilitation and helps children achieve a greater range of motion than with land-based therapy. n Dance therapy: This creative therapy uses choreographed or improvised movement to promote healing, release tension and anxiety and help develop gross motor skills, coordination, balance and flexibility. n Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT): This medical treatment delivers pure oxygen at higher-than-normal pressures to patients sitting or lying in a special chamber. It helps improve speech, memory and other cognitive abilities in patients with brain deficits.

Apple a day By offering healthy alternatives such as apples or other foods that are naturally sweet, children avoid unhealthy snacks. This is the easiest way parents can help children prevent tooth decay and cavities.

Brush! Brush! Most children will be able to brush their own teeth by age 6 or 7. Select a brush that has soft, rounded bristles and teach them to use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. They should brush for a minimum of two minutes twice a day.
