How to Choose the Right Camp? Finding a great summer camp for your child, takes a bit of research. Here is our checklist to start your search for the perfect camp: Focus
Duration
Location
Do you want a general outdoor camp or a specialized one? Consider these components:
How long do you want your child at camp?
Location and setting are key elements. Close to home or hundreds of miles away? An urban environment or wilderness?
❏ Religion as part of the day-to-day program
❏ Academic environment ❏ Sports-centered setting ❏ Artistic atmosphere (creative, visual or performing arts)
❏ Technology setting
Activities Do you want your child to have lots of activities or a fair amount of free time? If activities, which ones are important?
❏ Hiking ❏ Swimming ❏ Campfires ❏ Reading/Storytelling ❏ Archery ❏ Arts and Crafts ❏ Horseback riding ❏ Games ❏ Sports ❏ Performing Arts/Drama/Dance ❏ Field Trips www.atlantaparent.com
❏ One week ❏ Two weeks ❏ Three weeks ❏ Four weeks or more
Size and Gender Smaller camps may make for closer relationships; larger camps often offer more group participation. Some kids may be more comfortable in samegender camps. First choose:
Then decide:
❏ Small ❏ Medium ❏ Large
❏ All boys ❏ All girls ❏ Co-ed
Location
❏ Far from home ❏ Same region ❏ Same state ❏ Within 100 miles Setting
❏ Country ❏ City ❏ Lakeside ❏ Mountains ❏ Oceanside Be sure to factor in travel costs when planning your budget.
The best way to make the perfect match is to include your child in the decision-making process. Together, you should explore the camp options and examine the materials the camps provide. In addition, many camps have websites that include photos, maps or virtual tours of the camp facility, sample daily schedules and menus, and information about the directors and key staff. As children become better acquainted with the camp experience and more involved in the decision-making process, they will have less anxiety about going away to camp.

hile summer vacation carries happy memories of family, friends, and the great outdoors, it also has a downside. Many students suffer significant academic loss over the summer, and this loss seems to be exaggerated for children with learning differences. Porter Academy’s goal is to help children maintain academic levels within a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Each of the five weeks has a different theme: Jurassic Park, Pete the Cat, Astronaut Adventures, Wild, Wild West, and Rainforest. Academics are interwoven into fun activities throughout each day as well as directly taught in small groups. This balance of fun and academics allows campers to relax and enjoy their summer while having academic skills reinforced. Campers participate in PE, Occupational Therapy, Music Therapy, games, arts & crafts, and hands-on-learning activities as well as in-house fieldtrips including jugglers, magicians, hands-on science educators, and animal encounters.
