Georgia Schools Checklist: Make Sure Your Child Meets the Requirements to Attend Classes Older Kids Needs Shots, Too. Had enough immunizations? Not quite. As kids enter sixth or seventh grade, there are a few final shots they’ll need. n Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap or Dtap) – final dose required n Varicella booster – second dose required n Mumps – second dose required n Meningococcal (MCV) – first of two doses – required before entering the seventh grade. n Human Papillomavirus, a threedose series, not required but recommended

Did You Know? n Georgia law requires students to attend a public or private school or be home-schooled from ages 6 to 16. Public kindergarten is available, but not mandatory.

Children enrolled in child care facilities or entering a Georgia school for the first time, including kindergarten, are required to have an eye, ear and dental exam and certain vaccines to protect against diseases such as diphtheria or measles. Examinations and vaccinations are offered through a private doctor’s office or public health clinics and are documented on the Georgia Certificate of Eye, Ear, Dental Exam (form 3300) and the Georgia Certificate of Immunization (form 3231). These completed forms must be provided by parents to the school or child care facility for enrollment. If form 3300 hasn’t been completed, parents have 120 days to submit it. Superintendents can grant a waiver for submitting form 3231, for up to 90 days, if immunizations can be completed during that period.

n Students enrolling in Georgia public schools for the first time will be asked to provide a Social Security number, but it is not required and parents can decline to provide it. n A child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 to enter public kindergarten. n A child must be 6 years old on or before Sept. 1 to enter first grade. n Georgia provides a public prekindergarten program for children 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, administered by Bright from the Start.

Helping Your Child Succeed in School by Lara Krupicka

There is no magic formula for school success, but here are a dozen things you can do to improve your child’s performance at school. n  Keep a consistent bedtime for your child. Being well-rested enables kids to better focus in school. n  Serve a healthy breakfast. A protein-rich breakfast, such as eggs, or cereal with milk will give your child fuel for his body and brain. n  Initiate regular communication with her teacher. Let the teacher know of any concerns you have or if there are any irregular circumstances at home. Ask for feedback on how your child is doing.

n  Buy your children books. Buy yourself books. Or check them out from a public library. Children raised in a print-rich environment are shown to be more proficient readers, according to Educational Testing Service. n  Praise growth rather than achievement. Psychologist and researcher Carol Dweck emphasizes a growth mindset that values learning for its own sake as a better predictor of success than “talent” or IQ. n  When working with your children on homework, guide them in strategies for completing it without doing the work for them. n  Talk about current events as a family. Children are better learners if they develop awareness of the world around them and critical thinking about what is happening. n  Get involved in your child’s school as you are able. Interacting with other parents can offer insights on what happens in your child’s school day.

n  Read regularly with your child. Not only does reading provide a good parent/child bonding time, it also encourages development of reading skills. n  Take a look at your child’s take-home folder or assignment notebook regularly. Review deadlines and your child’s plan for meeting them. n  Encourage your child to explore deeper into topics that interest her. Learning is a lifelong skill and kids need to see that they can find enjoyment in it. n  Ask open-ended questions about what your child is studying in school. Let him teach you. Passing along skills and information is a good way to reinforce what a child is learning.

Early Years Are Primetime for Learning Much of the discussion about education focuses on the K-12 years, but early childhood education experts suggest serious learning can start even earlier and shape the child’s future. “Children’s minds are like sponges when they are very young,” says Alise McGregor, founder of Little Newtons early childhood education centers. “Under age 5 is the most important time for development and our best opportunity to set up children for success. If we strongly educate children at a very young age, while their brains are so pliable, by the time they reach kindergarten, their brain capacity is much higher.” Recent research confirms that the first five years of life are particularly important for brain development. Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child says more

than 1 million new neural connections are formed every second, building the brain’s network. This growth establishes a foundation for learning, thus an opportunity to be better prepared for grade school and beyond, experts say. One analysis of several studies, “Impacts of Early Childhood Education on Medium- and Long-term Education,” showed that children exposed to highquality pre-kindergarten education performed better academically in later years. Early education also led to higher graduation rates and less grade retention.

Five reasons parents should consider ramping up their pre-K child’s education:

1

Socialization. Socialization

with people other than the child’s family in a safe environment is an essential foundational element. It’s important to introduce children to other children and support their transition into their own friendship groups, to help children overcome shyness and gain self-confidence, McGregor says.

2

Personal experiences.

3

Enthusiasm for Learning.

4

Learning respect for others. A fundamental building

5

These assist the brain’s organizational development and functioning in many situations, helping children develop learning skills as well as social and emotional abilities. “A good earlyeducation center creates an environment where imagination, love and innovation all come together for a daily adventure,” McGregor says.

Lessons given in a fun and exciting way will encourage children to be effective learners.

block for happiness, friendships and success in school and life starts early by learning how to listen, share, cooperate, take turns and follow rules.

Resilience. It’s important that

early childhood educators and parents work together to develop resilience in children as early as possible. “By creating a consistent and stable environment with clear expectations and predictable consequences, children can develop skills in managing themselves and their emotions,” McGregor says, adding that this is the foundation for building coping strategies for greater challenges in life.

McGregor is the author of “Creating Brilliance” (Nursing Values, $11.99) as well as the founder of Little Newtons (littlenewtons.com), with early childhood education centers in Minnesota and Illinois.

Choosing a Great Preschool Finding the right preschool for your child may seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) says a high-quality preschool program should have these qualities. Look for them when you visit. n  Interaction with caring adults. Teachers help your child feel secure and important every day. They listen to your child and get to know him well. n  Active, hands-on, “mindson” play and learning. As your preschooler plays, experiments, and interacts with other children and teachers, a lot of learning happens. n  Activities to connect new

ideas and skills to what kids already know and can do. All of us learn best when we can link new information to what we already know.

Spotlight on Private Schools GRACEPOINT School

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School

ounded in 2012, when two mothers stepped out in faith to provide their dyslexic children with a specialized education in a Christian setting. GRACEPOINT School began with a mere four students and has steadily grown to an enrollment of more than 100 students in grades one through eight. Students receive a comprehensive, high quality education program, combining remediation with enrichment and acceleration. Students typically complete remediation in three to four years allowing them to transition into a more traditional educational environment. GRACEPOINT utilizes the Orton-Gillingham method, a multisensory approach woven into all subject areas. Their students receive seventy-five minutes of explicit reading instruction daily by a certified Orton-Gillingham teacher. The student/teacher ratio for reading is 5:1, while all other core subjects have a student/teacher ratio of 8:1. The mission at GRACEPOINT is to equip dyslexic students with the skills needed to develop into independent and confident learners. They strive to instill a life-long desire for their students to grow in wisdom and knowledge of the Lord, so that each will fulfill God’s purpose and bring Him glory. GRACEPOINT is located in an independent building on the campus of Piedmont Church in Marietta. gracepointschool.org. 678-709-6634.

oly Innocents’ Episcopal School, located just north of Chastain Park and inside the perimeter, reaches across 43 beautiful acres and boasts a state-of-the-art STEM Building, stand-alone Primary School, Lower School, Middle School and Upper School facilities, a Fine Arts Building, two modern gymnasiums and four expansive athletic fields. Holy Spirit Preparatory School

McGinnis Woods School

oly Spirit Preparatory School is a remarkable institution among the many independent schools in the Atlanta market. The young, accomplished school is one of the few independent Catholic schools in the Atlanta metro area. It serves students from 6 months all the way through 12th grade, so is perfect for families. Its high school keeps getting named one of the top Catholic high schools in the country by the Catholic Education Honor Roll. Their AP scores are way above state and national averages (in the hardest AP tests, like Chemistry and Calculus, their students average over a 4 out of 5, which is incredible), and their alumni get accepted to Ivy League schools, military academies, top 25 schools, and universities across the world. But, really, it’s all about fit. Because they maintain a smaller enrollment than most independent schools, they find the right place for each student - channeling them to the right club, the right gifted classes, the right team - and the right college fit after HSP. This school is all about personalized learning, small class sizes, and forming students in “mind, body, and soul” in a family of faith and learning. For more information, call or text admissions at 678-761-7992, or visit holyspiritprep.org.

cGinnis Woods School is a private, non-parochial school offering a rich Preschool, Elementary and Middle School Education. The beautiful school campus is located in Alpharetta. The Preschool accepts children as young as 6 weeks old and the Elementary and Middle School teach students in PreK 4 through 8th grade. McGinnis Woods is GAC, SACS, and NAEYC accredited. It is also a member of the Georgia Independent School Association. The mission of McGinnis Woods is to inspire students with the passion to excel. This is accomplished by providing superior hands-on, minds-on academics and inspiring a lifelong love of learning. Classes with low student-teacher ratios, provide for frequent one-to-one learning. The students learn through a variety of groupings including class lessons, small group activities, hands-on STEM activities and “buddy” classes which encourage multi-age groupings. Frequent guest speakers, monthly field trips, character education, and community service round out the challenging curriculum. Drama Club, Competitive Sports and Robotics teams train year round. Teach Your Child to Enjoy School

Nurturing Hearts and Minds

Serving Grades 1-8

by Lara Krupicka

School day blues can be a tough issue to face with your child. You want them to look forward to the place where they spend the most time. Here are some tips for helping them learn to better appreciate school: n  Set an upbeat tone for the day before they leave the house. If getting out the door to school is a chore because your child is tired, try moving bedtime back a half hour. As adults we know how hard it can be to drag ourselves out of bed early. The same is true for kids. n  Accentuate the positive. Ask your child specific questions about what they liked about their day. It’s okay if they say “lunch” or “recess.” Use your investigative skills to learn what makes that appealing to them. Then pinpoint other occasions during the school day where they can enjoy those aspects. If it’s time with friends, help them recognize interactions they have within the classroom. n  School can be a downer for kids when they get overwhelmed by summative assessments like tests and overall class grades. As educational psychologist Carol Dweck points out in her book “Mindset,” kids learn better when they focus on the process and growth instead of outcomes. n  With growth in mind, help your child to set school-oriented goals. Ask “what do you hope you can do at the end of the school year that you can’t do now?” If one part of their day is more discouraging than another, consider focusing the growth goal in that area. Then revisit those goals periodically. Focus on growing your child into a lifelong learner. In the process, they might see school in a different light. atlantaparent.com

ESTABLISHED in Christ Ace that Quiz with Test Prep by Teri Cettina Your child pays attention in school and does his homework, but when it comes to tests, he’s not making the grade. Time for Test Prep 101. You don’t have to become your child’s study buddy, but you can help him develop effective test-taking skills. To learn spelling, for instance, show him how to use a recording device to pronounce the words, then spell them, then check his work. For math, make sure he has the concepts down, then solves actual problems. For other subjects, try mnemonics, flashcards, drawing, recitation, whatever clicks with your child.

Studying is only part of the equation. How your kid takes the test counts, too. n  Do a “brain dump.” When your child starts a test, encourage him to immediately write in the test margins or on scratch paper (if allowed) any key formulas, dates or lists he’s worried about forgetting. Unleashing these details on paper quickly frees up his brain space to focus on the test. The info also helps later if your child blanks out on key facts. n  Scan and skip. Coach your child to look over the whole test, then start with questions she’s sure of – no matter where they fall on the test. Answering familiar questions first will boost her confidence and help her save time for tougher questions later on. n  Manage multiple choice. In general, if your child has four multiple-choice answers from which to choose, he should be able to eliminate two options right away. Then he can choose his final answer from the two remaining options, a much easier choice. n  Review and regroup. After a big test, particularly if your child didn’t do as well as expected, review it together. Did he misread the directions? Forget to study an entire section? Get tired toward the end? Feel free to ask your child’s teacher for clues, too. n  Create a “you did it!” tradition. The evening after a test, take your kid for a bike ride or let her stay up an extra 30 minutes at bedtime, whatever she considers a special treat. It’s congratulating your child for making it through a tough task.

Get the Most from an Open House Open houses are the time for parents to learn critical information about a child’s potential school. Attend your next open house equipped with what to expect and a list of questions. Expect to hear a brief history of the school, an overview of educational philosophy, a mission statement and perhaps a list of extracurricular activities. This overview period is a good time for parents to ask about the bus schedule, school lunches, dress code and other general information. Most schools offer a guided tour of the campus. If your child is already enrolled, you may meet with your child’s future teacher. Look past the terms that schools use to describe themselves. Ask for evidence to support the school’s claims – SAT scores, attendance records, grade-point averages.

Good questions to ask: n  How much ongoing training do teachers receive? n  How can parents be involved in the classroom? n  If students are put on ability tracks, how is that decided? n  What is the main emphasis of the curriculum? n  Does the school offer free tutoring?

Go Beyond the Open House n  Call the prospective school and schedule a time to observe a class in session. This will give you a good idea of the teaching style and classroom setting. n  Talk to other parents about the school. n  Look at the big picture. Although your child may be entering Pre-K, you may be hoping to stay with the system through high school, so research graduation and college placement rates and scholarship recipients. This information is usually found on the school’s website. –  Alexi Wilbourn

Boarding Schools: Building Character, Academics, Independence Many families choose boarding schools because of smaller class sizes or a curriculum and teaching style that encourages good character and academic excellence. Some of the advantages of boarding schools include: n  A School For Every Child: The most conventional school form is college prep, which can be co-ed or single sex. Military schools mimic the structure and discipline of the armed forces. Arts-based schools prepare students for careers as professional dancers or musicians. Religious schools emphasize faith. Other schools are designed for kids with special needs. n  Smaller is Better: Typically, boarding schools have a much smaller class ratio than public schools. The student/teacher ratio is often no more than 10-to-1.

n  Ethnic Diversity: Many schools strive for a student body that is racially, economically and socially diverse, offering financial aid to maintain that balance. Students are exposed to kids and cultures they might not encounter in their communities and learn to appreciate and embrace differences.

n  Academic Challenge: Boarding schools tend to have an intense academic curriculum. Educators have advanced degrees, and kids are challenged to excel.

n  A Community of Lifelong Friends: Because the students, faculty and administrators are interacting at all hours of the day, students learn from intense bonding experiences. Sharing in the common goals and traditions of the school fosters strong friendships.

n  Independence with Rules: Boarding students get to experience life away from home in a structured atmosphere before facing the temptations that come with the fewer rules of college life.

n  A Safe Environment: Many schools have tight security and because of the close-knit nature of the campus, visitors or strangers are likely to be spotted. –  Sharon Morioka and Amanda Allen

Spotlight on Special Needs

The Atlanta Public Schools

FOCUS + Fragile Kids

he Atlanta Public Schools Department of Special Education offers comprehensive special education services for children from birth through age 21 years through Child Find. Child Find is a component of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires all states to identify, locate, evaluate and refer all children with disabilities. Children from birth to age three with disabilities will be referred to the appropriate agencies for services. All referrals are considered confidential, and services are provided at no cost to the family. Atlanta Public Schools Child Find services can open a window of hope for a brighter future for infants and toddlers who are at risk of developmental delay. A free, appropriate, public education with a full continuum of services is available to all eligible children. If you know a child who may have a problem with learning, speech, vision, hearing, or who has physical, cognitive or health impairments, please encourage his or her parents and/or guardians to contact the Department of Special Education at 404-802-1690 or 404-802-2665 for more information.

OCUS was founded in 1983 when two children who were medically fragile shared a hospital room. Started as a ‘living room support system,’ FOCUS grew through the years to reach over 4,000 families with 11 weeks of summer day camp; monthly respite care; support groups, hospital visits, and family camps and activities. Fragile Kids Foundation was founded by a group of professionals to help parents get the medically-prescribed equipment that insurance and Medicaid did not cover. After officially merging in 2017, FOCUS + Fragile Kids now offers parent support and information, fun programs for children and families, and equipment that makes life a little easier. FOCUS + Fragile Kids offer a conference each January to help parents learn, navigate, and network. Family activities are also very popular – a great way to meet families in similar circumstances and to have fun!. Find out more about FOCUS + Fragile Kids at www.focusga.org. Comfort. Hope. Fun. Learning on the Go Field Trips Can Spark Curiosity, Make Subjects Come Alive A field trip is a great way to rev up a child’s interest. Here’s how to make the most of this opportunity for learning, before, during and after the experience.

Plan Ahead n  Pick a destination that expands

on lessons being taught in school.

n  Talk with your guide in advance to

tailor the visit to your group’s interests. For instance, young children visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site might be more interested in Dr. King’s life as a young boy than in his time in a Birmingham, Ala. jail. n  Make sure you have enough chaperones for your group – a good ratio is one adult per five children – and make sure the chaperones know the itinerary, have a list of each child’s name and a list of the items each child should see, and they know where and when to meet if the group splits up. n  With a large group, outfitting the

kids in fluorescent T-shirts and name tags will help chaperones keep track. n  One week ahead: Call the

location and confirm the trip. Make sure of the directions, and ask if there are directions that will avoid traffic snarls. Be sure you know where to park, particularly if you’ll be arriving by bus. Decide how you’ll do lunch – you’ll need to make reservations in advance with the venue or a restaurant for a large group, or you might ask each child to pack a sack lunch.

52

EDUCATION Guide | 2019

The Big Day n  Be prepared for the weather

and pack appropriately, whether it’s an umbrella, sunscreen and towels, or gloves and a warm coat. Be sure each child has comfortable walking shoes. n  Bring extra cash and stash it separately from purse or wallet, in case either is lost or stolen. n  Make sure each child eats breakfast, but bring portable healthy snacks for later in the day, such as boxes of raisins. n  Add a little fun – and educational value – to the trip by asking each child to complete an activity during the visit. At the zoo, for instance, they could keep track of how many newborn animals they see. n  Make sure each child knows his contact information (phone numbers, where parents work), or chaperones have a contact list. n  Emphasize that children need to stay together as a group, and tell them what to do if they get separated. n  Sing songs on the way to

the location to set the mood. “Old McDonald Had a Farm” is a natural for a visit to a farm.

Four Tips for Field Trip Success n  Schedule the trip as far in advance

as you can and if you plan to take a group, ask the venue about discounts. n  For popular destinations, visit early in the week to avoid crowds. n  Gather information from the destination’s website, read books and watch videos. Make sure the kids have a good basic knowledge of the place they’ll be visiting and why they’re going. n  Set some ground rules for behavior and make sure everyone knows the consequences of misbehaving.

The Days After n  Discuss what you’ve seen and how it relates to your community or how an event in history shaped the children’s lives today. n  If your group had its own guide or got other special treatment, be sure to thank the venue that provided it. Writing a thank-you note to your guide or the organization teaches children etiquette. n  Kids often get more interested in a subject after a field trip. Be sure to follow up with more information and activities related to the trip. –  Sue Price and Amanda Allen
