Tim and Samatha Dwyer’s family-run business is celebrating it’s 25th year as Circus Camp. They have been teaching children new skills and building self-esteem in a fun atmosphere. The camp has expanded every year, from one location to five, added more circus arts skills and attracted more campers. Young performers have come back summer after summer and many attend Autumn and Winter Aerial Programs, too. The Dwyers have a formula that works: The teachers are circus performers that have a great rapport with children. During their week at camp children choose the circus skills they’ll learn. Some might choose different activities every day; others might work on one or two skills, such as juggling and unicycling. Such a good time is had by all that many sign up for multiple camp sessions, because Circus Camp is ... INTERACTIVE Campers participate in real circus arts – trapeze, tightrope, magic, juggling, even throwing a pie in a clown’s face.
ENTERTAINING Circus teachers perform a show every afternoon to entertain and inspire the campers.
PERFORMANCE Campers work hard to develop skills and perform a grand finale Circus Show for family and friends every Friday.

FOOD AND FRIENDS “At Camp Cosby lunch is a time to gather, chat about the day, replenish and prepare for the afternoon. It is also a time for songs, skits and lots of dancing. Each week I watch children in our dining hall go from timid and nervous to dancing like no one is watching!” says Karen Kasprzak, program operations director of YMCA Camp Cosby on Lake Logan Martin in East Ala.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS Many kids have been told at home that they’re not supposed to get dirty, says Jackie Entz at Camp Chehaw in Albany, Ga. “When we’re canoeing, we purposely stop in this muddy spot, and kids are afraid to get out of the canoe because the water is too muddy. Some of them have never been in anything but a pool. Once they’re in, though, a fun mud fight might ensue, even in kids afflicted with ‘nature deficit disorder,’” she says. “The typical camper is very excited to try wakeboarding but is also often anxious and unsure about whether they will be able stand on the board,” says Andy Rogers, director of Camp Westminster in Conyers, Ga. “Within minutes – sometimes on the first attempt – most are up and zipping across the lake, and by the second day over 95 percent are riding happily without any thought of the prior day’s concern.”

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CAMPER
SOMETHING SPECIAL A few campers arrive a bit timid to be outdoors. “When we tell kids they’ll be camping under the stars, they think they can’t do it, there will be wild animals, it’s too scary,” says Mary McSherry, director of Camp Fire Camp Toccoa in Toccoa, Ga. Then they hike to a rock quarry, unroll their sleeping bags and gaze in wonder at the night sky as they fall asleep, without even a tent for cover, she says.
NO JUDGING “Kids are given the freedom to be who they are,” says Susan Hooks of Riverview Camp for Girls in Mentone, Ala. Though kids typically wear shorts at the camp, one 7-year-old only wanted to wear dresses and she did. The next year, she was back, this time in shorts. Now a junior in college, she’s been a camper every summer. “Kids can choose what they’ll wear everyday,” Hooks says. “If they have a bad hair day, it’s fine, it doesn’t matter.” – Amanda Miller Allen

n Tallulah Falls, Georgia, the Athens Y Camp for Boys was founded in 1898 by Walter T. Forbes. Mr. Forbes also founded Camp Chattooga for Girls in 1933 as a sister camp to AYC. The camps are owned by the Athens YMCA and are accredited by the American Camp Association. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” - Proverbs 22:6 The mission of the Athens Y Camps is to provide a safe atmosphere for young boys and girls to aide them in maturing and growing as they learn and excel in various physical activities and social interaction, all based on Judeo-Christian principles. Fun, traditions and Christian values in a rustic setting - that’s what makes us so special, along with over 800 rolling, wooded acres in Tallulah Falls, GA. Our programs provide opportunities for skill, personal development, and spiritual growth with lots of fun. This is all provided in a
safe, protective environment, both kids and parents feel good about. There are opportunities to make new friends, improve abilities, and develop greater strength of character and personality. Of course, the health and safety of each camper is top priority; our 1:6 counselor-to-camper ratio assures close supervision of all activities. Our summer camps each have their own private facilities and programs. The boys camp setting is a lovely valley with a private lake that is complimented by surrounding mountains. The girls camp setting is on a beautiful mountainside with a lake surrounded by mountain laurel thickets. Both camps offer several programs that are designed to give every camper a unique experience. If you would like more information on the Athens Y Camp for Boys or Camp Chattooga for Girls please visit the website at www.athensycamps.org or call the office at 706-754-6912.

Getting Ready for Sleep-Away Camp Help Your Child Have a Great Summer Experience
by Jane Schneider
A
re you considering sleep-away camp for the first time and wondering how your kid will fare? Camp directors say there’s really not much need for concern. “Most kids love trying new things,” says Susan Hooks of Riverview Camp for Girls in Mentone, Ala. “We’ve seen success with thousands of children who are first-time campers.” Here’s what parents need to know about that first experience, and how best to prepare your child for a great week. Head off homesickness No one wants to hear that their child has spent a week in misery. So parents often send their kids off to camp with the assurance that if they get homesick, they’ll be whisked back home. Giving voice to doubt that your child won’t make it a week without you sets your child up for failure. Instead, encourage your child by telling him that time at camp will pass quickly, and that he’ll make friends and get to try new things. Tell your child to share any concerns with cabin counselors, who’ve been trained 28 Atlanta Parent February 2017
to listen and redirect worried thoughts. Send along photos of family members and pets and tape these to bunk walls. You can also preaddress postcards that your child can send. “When kids get homesick, a lot of times they just want one-on-one attention, and our counselors have extensive training in dealing with homesickness,” says Alyson Gondek, director of Camp Woodmont on Lookout Mountain in Georgia. “We assure them it’s normal to be homesick, that everyone is going to miss home when they’re away, even adults.”
Camp 2017
Share personal information about your child No one wants to admit their 9-year-old still needs a pull-up at night. But accidents happen. And that’s exactly the kind of information camp directors need. If camp counselors know this ahead of time, the counselor can run the child to the bathroom at 11 p.m. or figure out a strategy so your child can manage the pull-up without it becoming public knowledge. Other information parents should disclose includes a tendency to sleepwalk, fear of heights, discipline problems or child preferences that might have a bearing on camp, such as fear of spiders or snakes. Also, be sure to include changes in family dynamics, such as the death of a loved one, a separation, or a recent divorce. “We need any health-related information, of course,” Gondek says, “but also any emotional behavior information. For instance, maybe the father has just been deployed overseas, or the child’s grandmother has died. Even if it’s something that seems insignificant, maybe the child’s turtle has died, it could come up and cause issues for him.” atlantaparent.com
Get your child ready to be unplugged Many camps limit or ban electronics, so kids used to living by their cell phone or Facebook can have a big adjustment. Share this news with your child, and let him know there are no exceptions. Camp is about building community and taking part in activities with those friends around you, not ones tethered to you via computers. “I’d say 99.999 percent of traditional camps don’t let children use their electronics,” Gondek says, and most parents want their kids to unplug. “The kids start having so much fun they don’t miss the gear,” she says. Most camps do allow kids to send emails at some point during the week. But sending letters through snail mail is more common. That’s not to say that kids can’t be reached, of course, in an emergency. But camps try to keep communication to a minimum so kids can focus on daily activities and forget about the outside world.
Take steps toward independence Though camp may be months away, it’s not too early to help your child become more self-sufficient. If you give your son
or daughter the freedom to master these skills, chances are they’ll be ready for the camp adventure come summer. “One parent told me, ‘My girls have so many choices they can make [at camp], and I love that they’re all good choices,’” Hooks says. n Personal hygiene: That means
making sure your child manages bedtime routines alone, including washing hair and brushing teeth. If the child is age 11 or older, make sure to send deodorant along, Gondek advises. “We get hot and sweaty at summer camp,” she says.
n Sleeping away: Get your child used to
your absence with sleepovers at a friend’s or relative’s home. n Personal belongings: Encourage your child to keep up with personal belongings. Make sure he is responsible for selecting clothes and getting dressed, but don’t be too concerned about what he chooses – at camp, nobody cares if colors clash. n Settling disputes: When siblings or friends disagree, let your children sort it out rather than intervening. Help the kids learn constructive ways of resolving conflict. Amanda Miller Allen contributed to this article.

Kids Smile
Give your kids cleaner teeth – and fewer cavities – with the help of these new products.
Fresher Mouth
A Toothbrush with Extras
Mouthwash might be a hard sell with kids, but Star Wars characters can help close the deal. Crest Pro-Health Jr. Disney Star Wars Mouth Rinse is alcohol free and has a pleasant taste. $3.99 for 16.9 fluid ounces
Philips Sonicare for Kids Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush has a wow factor that might turn around that reluctant brusher. Stickers let each child personalize the brush, a timer tells them how long to brush and the toothbrush comes with apps to help kids learn brushing techniques. $49.99
Clean Teeth and Hands Intellitec’s LPL822 Mini LED “Wash & Brush” Timer does double duty, for hand washing and tooth brushing. It’s battery operated and easily mounts on a bathroom wall where it’s handy to use. Press the button for 20 seconds for hands, or two minutes for teeth; a red light lets kids know when time is up. $10
Brush and Glow Kids often can’t gauge how long to brush, but not if they’re using Arm & Hammer’s Spinbrush Globrush. The battery powered toothbrush lights up, then changes color every 30 seconds to signal it’s time to brush another section of the mouth. $7-$10
Colorful floss Butler Gum Crayola Flossers help remove plaque that forms even when children brush regularly. The flossers are easy to hold and use in small hands and, of course, come in many colors. Three packages of 40 flossers, $8.
Toothbrush Timer Some parents use twominute sand timers from a board game, but Brusheez is cooler. With this app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, kids can pick and personalize a crazy cartoon pal and make him dance to music as they brush. Free

Roberta Cann, DMD and Joyce Kim, DMD
Dr. Roberta Cann and Dr. Joyce Kim love caring for patients of all ages. We focus on wholistic dentistry, alternative dental health care with a more conservative approach to dental procedures. Wholistic dentistry is designed to work with your body, promoting oral health and full body wellness. Dr. Joyce Kim joined Cann Dentistry in 2015 and is very popular with our younger patients. Children experiencing kind and gentle wholistic dental care become comfortable with taking care of their teeth, learning how their whole body is affected by what they eat and how they take care of their body. The Myobrace no-braces approach straightens teeth the natural way, supporting optimal growth and development of the jaw for proper alignment of the teeth. Our practice is mercury free and mercury safe. Dr. Cann and Dr. Kim follow the SMART certified safe removal protocol for mercury removal to prevent your exposure to visible and microscopic mercury particles and vapor. Atlanta Gladiators Hockey: See a Biscuit in the Basket
V
isit the barn to see a winger snipe the biscuit in the basket and celly! (Translation: Go to the Infinite Energy Center hockey arena and see a forward shoot the puck into the goal and celebrate.) Don’t worry if your kids (or you) don’t know the lingo or all of the rules, hockey is a fast, physical sport that is fun to watch and easy to learn. The Atlanta Gladiators are an ECHL (formerly East Coast Hockey League) Boston Bruins affiliate. This mid-level (beneath the NHL and AHL) hockey team has been around since 2003, and is Atlanta’s only professional hockey team. Atlanta’s NHL team, The Thrashers, left in 2011. Each game has a special theme including the upcoming Star Wars Night (Feb. 18) and Princess Day (March 12), and throughout each game there are contests and interactive activities (puck toss, T-shirt give-a-way, on-ice relays). Atlanta Gladiators Hockey is a fast-paced, fun family outing. My 4-yearold daughter loved the dance cam and was excited to meet the mascot, Maximus. My 7-year-old son, a hockey fanatic, loved being able to high-five the players as they skated onto the ice. Know Before You Go: The Infinite Energy Center is easy to access, has free parking and has ample food vendors to make for a low-stress family outing. Lower ticket prices can be found if you take advantage of promotions such as Kroger Family Sundays. The temperature inside the arena is comfortable, so no need to pack your parka (most people just wear long sleeves). The overall atmosphere is family friendly, though there is the potential for an errant puck in the stands or an occasional on-ice scuffle. – Megan Ratcliff

The fighter jet was known as the “Cold War Warrior” and the Soviet Union produced more than 13,000 of the jets, which went on to be used in the air forces of over 50 countries. This exhibit is more appropriate for an older child who would appreciate the history of the jet, and understand its importance. It was enlightening to look inside the cockpit and see the instrument panels and the close quarters, but it would be hard for a young child
to resist climbing in and playing with all of the controls! Tellus Science Museum has many other interesting things for children of all ages, and it’s a hands-on space for young explorers. At the end of our visit, Adam had a hard time leaving. The Mach Speed exhibit was the highlight – Adam was really excited to see the “fastest,” “most expensive” or “oldest” objects in person. He was very happy to have seen the first jet that was capable of such speeds. More Reasons to Visit Tellus:
The mineral gallery was impressive; my son spent ages in the gallery exploring. The panning for gems and hunting for fossils sections are so much fun for kids of all ages, and you get to take home what you find! The fossil gallery had things I’d never seen elsewhere. There’s a huge collection of vehicles for transportation buffs to explore. – Kirsten Gromatzky

Reach for the Sky at iFLY I
f skydiving is on your bucket list, but you can’t work up the courage to jump out of a plane, then iFLY is the place to go! Our family of five thoroughly enjoyed the adrenaline rush of indoor skydiving at the new location in Atlanta. The skydiving takes place inside of a giant flight chamber within a powerful vertical wind tunnel, and the freefall sensation is like no other! My children, ages 10, 8 and 5, weren’t quite sure what to expect, and as people took turns flying, we watched mesmerized from the viewing area of the flight deck. Friendly certified flight instructors are good at answering questions and getting rid of any pre-flight jitters during a short flight training session. Everyone watches a brief video and learns hand signals to use during The Details the flight session. iFLY “I look cool!” was my 5-year-old’s 2778 Cobb Pkwy., Atlanta reaction to wearing the official flight iflyworld.com; 678-803-4359 gear consisting of a helmet, flight suit, n Hours: Mon.-Thurs., 9 and goggles. We all felt very confident a.m.-10 p.m.; Fri., 9 a.m.-11 during each of our 60-second flights, and p.m.; Sat., 8 a.m.-11 p.m.; we enjoyed giving each other high-fives Sun., 8 a.m.-10 p.m. after our turns. Parents will appreciate the n Cost: Packages start at safety of iFLY, since the flight instructor $69.95 per person never leaves your side while flying in the flight chamber. The entire iFLY experience lasts about 1 hour and 45 minutes, and it’s a smooth process from start to finish. For the best experience, parents should check the website prior to going to help children visualize what iFLY is all about. Also, due to its popularity, it’s best to save time by booking an appointment and filling out the waiver online before heading to iFLY. Be sure to arrive one hour before your scheduled flight time if you’re a first-timer. My children are extremely proud of their personalized flight certificates that they received, and they love telling their friends about this thrilling experience. – Felicia Barman atlantaparent.com
