I need advice on how to baby-proof my home. My kid needs to get a learner’s permit. Help me find a place for my child’s birthday party. Where can my special needs child play? I need to find a good nearby kids dentist. Where are some places that I can take children to fish?

Get a sample of the great offerings these businesses provide at Family Block Party: Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students (GEEARS): GEEARS leads and inspires a statewide effort on early learning for children ages birth to 5 years, through outreach to businesses and civic leaders. It promotes public awareness and advocacy and influences public policy. GEEARS vision is that by 2020, every child will enter kindergarten prepared to succeed and on a path to “read to learn” by the third grade. Zoo Atlanta: From well-known native wildlife to endangered species on the brink of extinction, Zoo Atlanta offers memorable close encounters with more than 1,500 animals from around the world. Visit the animals at the Family Block Party as well as at Wild Encounters, three behind-the-scenes opportunities to meet and feed an African elephant, giant panda or Komodo dragon, opened in spring 2012. Don’t miss the petting zoo, playgrounds and kid-friendly rides. The Zoo is open daily. Visit zooatlanta.org for tickets and information. Two Men and a Truck: Get behind the wheel and explore inside one of our big trucks! At Two Men and a Truck, customer service is the number one priority, and they follow the “Grandma Rule” – to treat everyone the way you would want your Grandma to be treated. What began as an after-school business for two high school boys has become an internationally-known moving company noted for its customer relations. So even though Grandma may not be as anxious as your 5 year old to climb around in this big truck, make sure you stop by and check it out! Fun-Fare: Fun-Fare offers a large selection of entertaining activities for every party and celebration. With many options to choose from, your event won’t be complete without one of their inflatable bounces, obstacle courses, giant slides or carnival games! Come jump, bounce and play in their tiny Tots Express, race your friends in the Bungee Run or Dragon Obstable Course or slide down the Extreme slide. For more information visit Fun-Fare.com. Mercer University: Ready to go back to school? Mercer is the place to go for continuing your education. A recognized degree. Professors who care about your success. Beneficiaries

E

very year, we invite organizations focused on helping families to become beneficiaries of our Family Block Party. This year, we selected four outstanding organizations: Autism Speaks, The Center for Children and Young Adults, Georgia Center for Child Advocacy, and Safe Kids Georgia. All four provide valuable services to children and their families. If your organization would like to be a partner for Block Party in 2014, please email Jordan at Jlisvosky@atlantaparent.com. Applications will be available Nov. 4, for consideration for 2014.

The Center for Children and Young Adults is a group home and shelter serving homeless youth throughout metro Atlanta. For nearly 30 years, this organization has provided a safe and nurturing environment with comprehensive services for youth who have been abandoned, abused, neglected, or who are at risk. In addition to providing basic life necessities, CCYA also offers counseling, coping skills, medical treatment, tutoring and educational support, plus self sufficiency needs of life skills, self-esteem building, job readiness, higher education or work training programs, transitional living goals and plans to reach those goals.

Autism Speaks is the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization. Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders by funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure. Since its inception, Autism Speaks has committed more than $195 million to research and developing innovative resources for families. An estimated one in 88 children in the U.S. is on the autism spectrum. Each year, Walk Now for Autism Speaks events are held in more than 100 cities across North America. On the global front, Autism Speaks has established partnerships and related activities in more than 40 countries on five continents to foster international research, services and awareness.

The Georgia Center for Child Advocacy is a private, nonprofit organization working to champion the needs of sexually and physically abused children through prevention, intervention, therapy and collaboration. The center provides a safe and friendly place where a child can end his silence by talking to a trained professional about the abuse. In addition to providing a safe and child-friendly environment, children and families are offered long-term psychological treatment to aid healing and give hope for the future.

Safe Kids Georgia is dedicated solely to preventing unintentional childhood injury by ensuring the safety of kids in cars, on wheels, in water, and at home. Accidents kill nearly one million children around the world each year and almost all injuries that cause these deaths are preventable. The organization aims to educate professionals, parents, caregivers and children in hopes of changing their behaviors and attitudes. Some of the educational activities the organization has provided include inspecting child safety seats, conducting bicycle rodeos, and hosting safety seminars for parents and caregivers.
