Beneficiaries

E

very year, we invite organizations focused on helping families to become beneficiaries for Family Block Party. This year, we selected two outstanding organizations: Page Turners Make Great Learners and The Georgia Center for Child Advocacy. Both provide valuable services to children and their families. If your organization would like to be a beneficiary for Family Block Party in 2015, please email Jordan at Jlisvosky@atlantaparent.com. Applications will be available Nov. 7, 2014.

PAGE TURNERS MAKE GREAT LEARNERS

Page Turner’s mission is to expand children’s

knowledge and understanding of the world, themselves and their unique possibilities through a love of reading. They envision a world in which all children will grow up to be literate, well-informed, productive and compassionate citizens. Children who cannot read cannot succeed. It is as simple as that. Consider the following fact: Georgia 4th graders rank 35th in reading proficiency among the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Page Turners motivates and encourages students in grades 3-5 to read through a variety of supplemental experiences that support and reinforce schools’ core language arts curriculum. Most of their programs are conducted in Title I schools where the greatest need for services exists. Communication of the importance and pleasure of reading is done through their school-wide Read-a-Thons (led by community role models from a broad spectrum of businesses and professions), book donation drives and our afterschool book clubs, facilitated by skilled classroom teachers. Their goal is not only to provide a positive reading experience, but to draw a clear connection between the skill of reading and the world of the workplace. Corporate and community volunteers widen children’s horizons, expand their understanding of the world and fuel their aspirations – not just through the books they read, but through the personal stories they share.

AtlantaParent’s Parent’sFamily FamilyBlock BlockParty Party2014 2014 10 Atlanta

Since its founding in 2005, Page Turners has served thousands of metro Atlanta students through its public and school-based Read-a-Thons and afterschool book clubs. They have partnered with numerous local organizations, including the Auburn Avenue Library’s Ashley Bryan’s Children’s Literary Festival, the Alliance Theatre and Mayor Kasim Reed’s 2014 Summer Reading Club and garnered support from a variety of local organizations and businesses including PNC Bank, Lockheed Martin, CBS46, Invesco, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and Chick-fil-A. The Georgia Center for Child Advocacy is a private, nonprofit

organization working to champion the needs of sexually and physically abused children through prevention, intervention, therapy, and collaboration. According to national statistics, 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before age 18. Even more alarming is the fact that less than 10 percent of these children will ever tell a soul. Without treatment, these problems can lead to far more detrimental behaviors during adolescence and adulthood which become a problem for an entire community. Children who experience child abuse and neglect are 59 percent more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28 percent more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30 percent more likely to commit a violent crime. These facts and statistics point to the importance of early intervention and treatment to minimize both the immediate trauma and

the long-term negative impact on a child victim’s healthy emotional development. The Georgia Center provides services to child victims of abuse and their non-offending caregivers, at no cost to the family. It is a safe and friendly place where a child can end his silence by talking to a trained professional about the abuse. Over 700 families are served each year, over 50,000 adults in Georgia received child sexual abuse prevention training, and over 1,500 Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) employees are trained on their interview skills with children. With community support and awareness, we can help treat and heal victims of abuse and give children hope for the future. To find out more, visit georgiacenterforchildadvocacy.org
