Publisher’s Note Abracadabra! An Issue to Help You Organize Parents of every generation share a common wish – a magic wand to wave for instant organization. Though we now have an ally with smartphones, it’s always a battle to stay on top of information and make it easily accessible when we need it. Looking for a convenient list of area nature centers? Looking for a great child care center in your area or music or ballet classes for the kids? You’ll want to keep this month’s Everything Issue handy. It’s our first ever issue curating resources parents need, all in one place. Of course, it doesn’t have absolutely everything, but it does have listings for Atlanta’s top family attractions, schools, kids’ classes and activities, and the many services parents use daily. We believe it will be an invaluable resource and go-to reference for busy moms and dads. Resources are something of a theme in this month’s issue. n Looking for a way to stay cool in Atlanta’s sweltering July? Read Keeping Your Cool in July (Page 48) for some fun ideas. n Are the kids jazzed about learning to play golf? We’ve organized the kid-
friendly golf courses, driving ranges and classes in Kids’ Golf (Page 56). n Our Family Fun Guide, as always, lists many, many, many ideas for outings (Page 45). n It’s a great time to find an abundance of fresh vegetables at your local
farmers market. Read our article Seven Tips for Getting Kids to Eat More Veggies (Page 42) to help encourage your kids to do just that. n Keep kids engaged this summer with the ideas presented in Prevent the Summer Slide (Page 10).
Let us hear how you’re using our Everything Issue at Facebook.com/ AtlantaParent. It’s not a magic wand, but we think you’ll find it’s a good substitute.

Prevent the ‘Summer Slide’ How to Keep Kids Engaged and Learning
by Christina Katz
Your kids probably are going to overnight camp or day camp or a workshop or summer school. However, some of the summer they will be home with no structured activities. Your first instinct might be to give them the summer off, but don’t. Put this enrichment routine into effect and watch your child go from listless and unmotivated to enthusiastic and engaged. You can prevent the ‘Summer Slide’ with an at-home program of your own making during the last weeks before school starts.
Schedule daily, weekly and monthly chores Your child is part of the family and therefore part of a team. Summer is not your only chance to reinforce this principle, but more free time can mean more help around the house. Make a chores list and divide it up into daily, weekly and monthly chores so kids can’t wiggle out of helping with big jobs like cleaning out the garage or washing the cars. Kids like to feel like they are graduating to more sophisticated chores the older they get, so make sure the level of difficulty of each chore matches each child’s aptitudes and abilities. Kids can feel proud of pitching in whether simply emptying the dishwasher daily, cleaning their room weekly, or doing yard work with the whole family every other week.
Issue a reading challenge Books are portable. Kids can read in the car, outside in the hammock, or while lying on a beach.
10 Atlanta Parent July 2016
Your child’s brain will turn to mush if you let him do nothing but play video games and watch TV. It’s not too late to sign the kids up for an ageappropriate summer reading challenge through your local library or even create your own. We buy our daughter eight age-appropriate reading-challenge books before school gets out. The rule is she must read for at least a half-hour on weekday mornings before she can do anything else. The half-hour often turns into an hour or even hours depending on the book. Keep your costs down by using the library or buying second-hand books or e-books.
atlantaparent.com
Lazy reading time, learning, as well as fun at home and away will make future summer memories.
Learn something fun What if everyone in your home learned something new each summer that interested them? Satisfying their interests will likely enrich the whole family so go ahead and set a date for a show and tell celebration at the end of the summer. Then look for summer learning opportunities through the local library, YMCA, or community center, and even online. Video training series are available online any given day, just make sure you screen the instructor, website and material for security and age-appropriateness. You can even help your kids create their own curriculum using books, videos, vocabulary, and a creative project. If you want to teach your kids that learning can be fun, put them in charge of learning a topic that motivates them and watch what happens.
Kids who learn life skills from their parents can transition more smoothly into adulthood.
Tackle life-skill projects Life skills are often not taught in school and learning new skills can be a fun, shared experience between parents and kids. Examples might be learning to cook with an elementary school child, redecorating a room with a tween, or balancing a checkbook with a teen. What’s nice about having a life-skill project with each of your children every summer is that it’s something you can bond over. Shopping for food together, deciding on paint colors together, and visiting the bank together suddenly become a shared adventure rather than a mundane task. As parents, we know a lot, and summer is the perfect time to connect while pursuing age-appropriate training.

Ban cell phones in the A.M. In our house, phones are viewed as a privilege, not a right. As long as we pay for them, we get to model healthy cell phone behaviors no matter what the other parents are doing. So we don’t use cell phones until noon, every day, even when it’s not summer. The idea is that Samantha could be doing something enriching or creative with her brain that does not involve staring passively into a screen. However, we make an exception if the screen is being used in pursuit of self-expression. If she wants to look up fashions from different periods so she can render them more accurately in her fashion notebook, that’s allowed. We also permit a quick phone check first thing in the morning to wish someone a happy birthday or reply to a message.
Being a good family member is helpful practice for being a member of a team.
Start these vacation policies when your kids are young if you can, although they will create a more balanced summer even if you start today with teens. Kids love having routines and these strategies will quickly become the new norm. If you have company or go to someone else’s home, let the enrichment routine go for the sake of enjoying the moment. Routines create structure, which increase feelings of stability and security in kids. But don’t be afraid to bounce the routine in favor of an impromptu trip to the pond or lake or beach. With summer enrichment routines, parents create a happier, more peaceful summer for the whole family. Cont’d on page 12

NEW USES FOR A
KIDDIE POOL Those plastic pools are great for splashing around on a hot day, but they’re good for much more than getting wet.
1 2
Bubbles Fill with store-bought or homemade bubble solution. You’ll find plenty of recipes online, but we like this one for giant bubbles: happyhooligans.ca/homemade-giantbubbles; the site also has an idea for a giant bubble wand. A giant hula hoop also does the trick. (It may take two pairs of hands: Put the hoop in the solution and lift straight up quickly.)
Sand Box You can purchase play sand at most home improvement stores. Make sure you have plenty of toys for digging and playing. As a variation, nurture your child’s inner archaeologist by hiding plastic dinosaurs or bones in the sand and giving them a paintbrush and a shovel for excavation.
3 4 5
Ball Pit Forget those fast-food places and their germ pits. Buy a large bag of plastic balls (online or at a big box store) and just add kids.
Children’s Garden Dump in bags of dark, healthy soil and let kids plant bulbs, or small flowers and watch them grow (the kids and the plants!)
Nighttime Comfort Zone Fill with pillows and blankets and watch a movie outdoors or simply lie back and look for constellations.
Tip: If you plan to leave your pool play area outside, use a fitted sheet as a cover to keep out bugs, dirt and critters. atlantaparent.com

Get the school year off to a smoother start with these six essential plans:
1 2 3 4
SPONSORED
Get Your House in Order Start to re-establish school routines now. Gradually get the kids out of a stay-up-later-in-summer routine and into an earlier-to-bed schedule. They’ll feel more rested and ready to learn if they’ve had adequate sleep when that 7 a.m. wakeup call comes to get dressed for school. Make sure they get nutritious meals to keep them alert for learning. Make sure the kids are organized and ready to go each morning, by designating a place for school backpacks and setting expectations on when they’ll be ready to catch the bus or join the carpool to get to school.
Make an Outline for Success Have a meeting with each child to set up expectations for a successful school year, including setting times for chores and homework. Discuss issues from the previous year, and come up with a plan to handle problems if they occur. Decide what activities the child can reasonably do without academics suffering and limit the rest.
Go for an A in Health Take care of medical, dental and vision checkups before school starts, especially if immunizations are needed for the new school year, a physical is required to allow your child to take part in sports or your child has complained for discomfort or pain. If exams uncover a problem, start to address it right away. A child with a medical problem will find it harder to pay attention in school.
Organize Your Workload Get your back-to-school shopping lists ready – make a list of new clothes the kids need, school and sports supplies and more, and plan a shopping day with the kids (Georgia’s tax-free weekend is July 30-31, but you may want to shop sooner). Set up folders for each child with information you’ll need for school – immunization records, phone numbers, emails, class schedules, school holidays and so on.
40 Atlanta Parent July 2016
Schedule a comprehensive eye exam for your child before school starts 80 percent of learning is visual, including reading, computer and classroom work. A child who has eye discomfort or difficulty seeing up close or at a distance will have trouble with school work. The Thomas Eye Group advises that eye exams for children are extremely important to ensure that children have normal, healthy vision and to identify any early vision problems that could affect schoolwork and daily life. Vision problems are common among school-age children, but many kids do not realize that their vision is abnormal, and do not complain. It’s important to identify and correct these issues before they lead to more serious complications such as difficulty learning. Visit thomaseye.com for more information.
5 6
Have Backup Plans Are you prepared when a child inevitably has a sick day during the school year? If both parents work, who will be home to care for your child? Can a relative or friend be counted on to step in or can one parent work from home from time to time? What happens if school gets canceled for a snow day or closes early? Can a neighbor pick up the kids for the afternoon? Get a plan in place before you need it.
Make Friends Meet your children’s teachers before school at an open house, if possible, or volunteer an hour a week or more to get to know the staff and school. If a child is transitioning to another school, take a tour and get him familiar with where his locker is and what his schedule will be like. Connect or reconnect with your children’s school friends and families you may not have seen during the summer – all the kids will feel more comfortable seeing familiar faces when the new school year begins (one idea: hold a potluck picnic or cookout). – Amanda Miller Allen atlantaparent.com

Tips for Getting Kids to Eat More Veggies
by Sara Barry
M
aybe you’re one of the lucky ones whose kids happily snack on kale chips, choose a side of spinach instead of fries, or scarf down whatever veggie you put on their plate. For those who hear a lot of “Yuck” or “I’m not eating that,” getting the right number of vegetables in can be a minor victory. If you’re tired of the veggie wars, try these tips, and keep trying. Most kids need multiple tries before they like a new food – and tastes do change.
1 2
Grow it/Pick it. Stop the battles about
veggies by letting your kids choose what they eat. Plant a garden or go to a pick-your-own farm. If you grow food, let kids snack right in the garden. Peas, green beans, cherry tomatoes and berries all lend themselves to snacking. Kids often like plants they can pull out of the ground, like carrots. Even if kids aren’t picking in the garden or a farm, let them choose. Go to a farmers market or even the produce section of your local store and let them select a new vegetable to try. If they pick one new to you too, ask the farmer how to prepare it or look online for tips and recipes. You might find something new that everyone likes! Have a go to or an opt out. For a long time, carrots were my go to vegetable. I’d put carrot sticks on the table and offer another option. Often my kids would turn down the peas or broccoli or green beans, but the carrots were non-negotiable. If your rule is that kids eat whatever is put in front of them, consider an opt out food, one or two things that kids don’t have to eat even if it is served. Think about it. You have foods you don’t like and don’t eat, right? Let kids know they can opt out of eating a particular food they don’t like (if they ask to try it again, by all means let them!), but they can’t pick a new opt out each day.

3 4 5
Sneak it. Books like Deceptively Delicious
and The Sneaky Chef help parents pack more veggies and other healthy additions into foods kids love. The drawback to this option is that kids don’t learn to eat a variety of healthy foods. Still squash mac and cheese and veggie packed meatloaf are great ways to get additional vegetables in while working on getting your kids to eat them knowingly. Snack it. We like to think in terms of a well-balanced meal, but it doesn’t really matter if vegetables are eaten with meals or between them. Put a plate of sliced veggies out on the table while prepping dinner. They might disappear while you’re cooking. Dipping makes any food more fun. Try carrots and peppers with hummus, a seasoned yogurt dip, or ranch dressing. Offer broccoli with a little melted cheese. Or what about mini veggie pizzas? These things may not be your child’s first choice, but if other choices are eliminated, they may be willing to try. Play with texture. Some kids like crunchy. Some like mushy. Some have trouble with tougher foods. Most vegetables can be served raw or cooked a variety of ways. Try different ways of serving foods atlantaparent.com
6 7
Get them in early. Do
your battles escalate at dinner time when kids are often cranky? Try squeezing some extra veggies in earlier in the day. Pop some in an omelet or make Morning Glory muffins with zucchini and carrots. Serve breakfast burritos with salsa and greens. The Non-Offer. My kids often want to eat off my plate. It’s a habit I like to discourage, but it comes in handy sometimes. I sometimes make myself a vegetable I like but they don’t and serve it only to myself. I don’t offer it or even comment on it. I just let them see it. Sometimes they ask what it is. And sometimes they ask if they can try it. I always say yes. Trying a vegetable is the first step. You’ll probably still get a lot of faces and “Yuck.” Acknowledge that they tried it. Encourage them to try again next time. You’ve got a few tricks up your sleeve – and a world of veggies to try. c

Sweet, Snappy, or Sneaky: Four Kid-Friendly Veggie Ideas l Do your kids love sweet? Roasting brings out the sweetness in many veggies. Carrots, beets, onions, peppers and broccoli are all good roasted. To roast veggies, toss them in oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and put in the oven at 400 degrees for about 50 minutes (less for broccoli and peppers). l Winter squashes, like butternut or acorn, are sweet. Serve squash on it’s own (maybe drizzled with a little maple syrup), in a soup, or mixed into a cheese sauce for mac and cheese. To cook winter squash, cut in half, scoop out the seeds, and place cut side down in a baking dish. Add about an inch of water and cook until squash is soft. Scoop out of the skin. Use an immersion blender or food processor for a smoother texture. Winter squash is also readily available frozen. l Green beans or snap peas are great raw or steamed. Try tossing them with a mix of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and a tiny bit of sugar or honey. l Get your greens into sauces and soups. Lightly steam greens like spinach, kale or chard. Whizz in a food processor or chop finely. Freeze the chopped greens in ice cube trays to pop into soups or sauces.

Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence
F
ernbank Museum’s new exhibit Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence is a highly imaginative and whimsical space showcasing nature’s glowing creatures. The entire exhibit is in the dark, lit only by the glows of firefly filled trees, patches of glowing mushrooms, and beautifulcreepy glowing creatures. My two boys and two girls, ages 2 to 11, each found things that interested and delighted them.
atlantaparent.com
Usually I’m the one reading all the exhibit notes aloud, but this time they were 10 steps ahead of me, probably because of the presentation and how the words were glowing and popping out at them. My big kids really enjoined the interactive touch pads, being immersed in an amazing deep sea environment full of fluorescent coral, and learning about treasured minerals that glow. My younger ones loved peering into the cave of glowworms, chasing fireflies, and the sea creatures like glowing jellyfish and the anglerfish. “It’s the fish from Nemo Mom!!!,” one said. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we got to sit down and watch a mini movie. Since it is dark throughout the entire exhibit, I’d recommend bringing an extra set of hands and eyes if you’re visiting with young children. It was great fun for all ages, and truly a little piece of Never Never Land. – Alicia Garcia

Close Encounters with Butterflies!
C
hildren get up close and personal with hundreds of native butterflies surrounded by colorful nectar plants in this special outdoor exhibit. After admission, be sure to stop by the Nature Exchange, downstairs from the ticket counter, and pick up a “Butterfly Bingo” scavenger hunt sheet. Kids can earn a prize for identifying different types of butterflies. (Shhhh …this could be considered sneaking a little science into summer vacation!) My two daughters, Georgia Anne, 12, and Sarah, 9, both did the scavenger hunt for butterflies and found more than half of the 24 types on their “Bingo” cards. Searching for particular butterflies kept them engaged and busy for over an hour. The exhibit itself is a garden full of colorful flowers surrounded on all sides by a clear mesh tent. There are mesh “doors” with velcro to make sure butterflies stay safely inside. At the door of the tent, you’ll get a nectar stick and instructions on how to handle these fragile insects. Each person must be checked before exiting to Fun fact: make sure no hitchhikers Butterflies leave with them. One taste with moment of excitement their feet. occurred when a butterfly escaped the enclosure and the naturalist on duty grabbed a net and gently caught and guided the adventurous butterfly back into the exhibit. If you want a butterfly to light on you, all you have to do is stand still near a patch of colorful flowers and hold out a nectar stick. atlantaparent.com
If You Go Butterfly Encounter Chattahoochee Nature Center 9135 Willeo Rd., Roswell 770-992-2055; chattnaturecenter.org n Exhibit: Through July 31. Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sun., noon-4:30 p.m. n Admission: $10 Adults, $7 ages 13-18, $6 ages 3-12, free for ages 2 and younger.
Sometimes three or four butterflies will light on a stick. “One landed on my head!” my older daughter exclaimed. “Take a picture, mom!” Photo opportunities abound, so be sure to bring your camera. If you are interested in creating your own butterfly garden at home, you can purchase plants at the exhibit. The naturalists who work in the Nature Center are friendly and happy to answer questions about everything.
Family Fun Guide
In addition to the Fun fact: Butterfly Encounter, When a the Chattahoochee butterfly Nature Center lands on you, features numerous it’s called trails to explore along “lighting.” the Chattahoochee River, an outdoor aviary with gorgeous birds of prey and indoor nature displays that allow children to touch, feel and engage all their senses. The Nature Exchange was a particularly interesting section. Kids can earn points by participating in activities such as the scavenger hunt and by bringing in nature items to be put on display in the Exchange. For example, my girls received 50 points for their filled out Bingo cards, and 25 points for filling out a survey. They were able to “purchase” some sea shells with their 75 points. My daughters soon may be earning more points: We have a bearded dragon at home and she is currently shedding her skin, as she does twice a year. The naturalist said she would give my girls 100-200 points for the shed skin, to be displayed in the nature exchange for others to see and experience. My daughters want to return with the shed skin and see if they can earn enough points to purchase a carefully preserved butterfly. I think the points system encourages kids to observe, find and share nature. Know before you go: The busiest times for the exhibit are 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays because camp groups go through the exhibit then. – Becky Cooper July 2016 Atlanta Parent 51

FIVE OINKS OF APPROVAL for Charlotte’s Web
H If You Go Charlotte’s Web Serenbe Playhouse, 10950 Hutchesons Ferry Rd., Chattahoochee Hills. 770-463-1110; serenbeplayhouse.com n Hours: 11 a.m. Fri. and Sat., 2 p.m. Sun. through July 31. n Tickets: Adults $20; younger than 12, $10. n Know before you go: Wear walking shoes and take water along. The area where the play is performed is shaded, and restrooms are available.
orses, pigs, donkeys, sheep and chickens all played an amazing supporting cast in the Serenbe adaptation of E.B. White’s, Charlotte’s Web. When my 8-year-old daughter, Micah and I arrived after a 45-minute drive south of Atlanta to Chattahoochee Hills, we realized we were in for a treat – the Serenbe property is beautiful and serene. We made the short walk to the outdoor performance area, where we were met by members of the cast, including Charlotte and Wilbur. Arriving 30 minutes early allowed us and other audience members to take pictures with the cast. We also purchased some food to feed the animals before taking our seats for the show. Once the play started, the audience was engaged as we learned a song that we sang
throughout the production. This rendition of the play was simply wonderful as it brought to light the gift and sacrifice of friendship. In addition, the chirps of the birds, the baa of the sheep and the oinks of pigs created a background melody that made this a “one of a kind” event. The audience was charmed by this “radiant,” “terrific” story that Charlotte “spun” of “some pig”! Following the play Micah made a friend, 8-year-old Zoe. They had fun talking about the play and characters, while feeding the baby goats. The girls compared their favorite characters – Micah’s favorite was Wilbur the pig, while Zoe loved Templeton the rat! Charlotte’s Web will forever be a memorable experience of friendship, loyalty and love! – Caren Lightfoot

Lights, Action and Fun with teamLab Future Park
L
ight balls and hopscotch – and so much more – will keep children entertained and learning at teamLab Future Park, a new exhibit at the Village at the Mall of Georgia. The exhibit’s stations are designed to foster creativity, demonstrate cause and effect, and teach educational concepts without children realizing that they are learning through play. It certainly worked with our three boys, ages 10, 8 and 4 – we practically had to bribe them to leave after two hours. The highly interactive digital exhibit is housed in a large, dark room with seven different colorful stations. The “Light Ball Orchestra” station featuring a sea of large balls illuminated in different colors. My boys enjoyed running from ball to ball with other children to generate different sounds based on color by bouncing, rolling or tapping each one. “Create! Hopscotch for Geniuses” had sound effects and music and kids – and adults – hopped gleefully about. The “Sketch Aquarium” and “Sketch Town” stations looked like giant screen savers – one

wall was a digital ocean scene with vibrant sea creatures floating around, while the other featured a cityscape. We marveled at the creative process involved as our boys chose paper templates, colored them with special crayons, scanned them in and watched their images co--me alive on each of the huge screens. They even created 3-D versions of their sketches, as souvenirs to take home. While the exhibit is designed for toddler to elementary school aged kids, we saw plenty of teens and adults joining in the fun. This exhibit is too good to miss! Know Before You Go: Allow at least an hour to take in everything due to the highly interactive nature of each exhibit, and be sure to have a snack beforehand, since no food is allowed inside. – Felicia Barman

Why We Love
Centennial Olympic Park
The 20-year milestone of the 1996 Olympic Games is approaching and Centennial Olympic Park has been transformed into an even more fun and booming place to spend time with your family. Museums, restaurants and attractions have sprung up around the park area since 1996, and more are to come. Stroll the park on an ordinary summer day and see Atlanta families mixing with tourists from all over the world enjoying 20 years of creativity. n Playground
n Attractions
n Events
The original architects of the park designed a universally accessible space for children of all physical capabilities. The playground is themed after the quilt of leaves pattern, which is representative of the distinctive design created for the 1996 Olympic Games. On any given day kids are seen soaring on a swing, whizzing down a slide or climbing play structures. The playground is located along the north edge of the Park on Baker Street, across from the World of Coca-Cola.
The Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, the College Football Hall of Fame and The Children’s Museum of Atlanta were all built after the sudden boom and development of the park after the Olympics. Explore thousands of species of marine life, taste the vaultkept secret recipe, revel in the South’s favorite pastime and learn with hands-on exhibits. The new, giant Ferris wheel called Skyride is a great way for your family to view the Atlanta Skyline, not to mention help conquer fear of heights.
The park hosts festivals, races, concerts and other events all year round, adding to the excitement of the park atmosphere. Live music performances called Music at Noon are held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Southern Company Amphitheater, June to October from 12-1 p.m. Bring a picnic lunch and blanket and enjoy the pop, R&B and jazz music while your children grab a bite to eat. The 20th Anniversary Celebration will be held July 16 with gates opening at 5 p.m. Make sure to check the centennialpark.com for event dates and times.
