Birthday Do’s, Don’ts and Maybes: Age-Appropriate Guidelines for Any Party by Cynthia Curtis

Should you invite your kid’s entire class or just a few close friends? Should your kid open his gifts at the party or after all the guests have gone home? How much input should your child get about the party particulars? Before you plan your next big bash, check yourself against the following advice from some professional party planners in the area, as well as from moms who’ve learned “in the trenches,” as they share their thoughts on celebrating your child’s special day.

n Games. Attention spans are notoriously short in this age group, so planners discourage formal games, opting instead for quick, interactive activities such as simple crafts, storytelling, face painting/ temporary tattoos, petting zoos, musical chairs, etc. Consider setting up a crafts table that kids (and parents) can visit when the mood strikes; it will keep the party moving and encourage even shy children to participate. n Opening Presents. Since young guests want to be an active part of the present opening festivities, many parents are opting to open presents after the party, or doing it in phases, a couple presents at a time. Regardless of whether the gifts are opened at the party or not, thank you notes are a must. Parents can begin teaching this timeless courtesy by allowing toddlers to color or scribble on the finished notes. n Favors/Goodie Bags. Planners and parents agree that, just like the food, favors should be kept simple but fun, and think quality, not quantity. Things that make noise are always a hit, and it’s easy to impress the pint-sized tot with something over-sized like a big, colorful lollipop or candied apple. Remember to put safety first; avoid toys with small parts, choking hazards and potential food allergies.

Ages 5-9

Ages 2-4 n Guest List. Birthdays can be stressful for everyone, especially toddlers, so professionals recommend inviting family and close friends only (a common formula is inviting one guest per year of the child’s age, plus one). Always be mindful of the child-adult ratio as well, and try to keep the odds in your favor! If you are allowing parents to drop children off, then definitely invite a conservative, manageable number. At this age, moms also recommend that you invite all, or none, of a child’s class so that feelings don’t get hurt. n Day/Time of Party. After determining the guest list, select a day that will maximize attendance and that is good

for the party venue, planners say. Moms agree that weekdays are great options at this age and that the party should be planned around nap times, because who wants a group of sleep-deprived, sugarhigh toddlers in tow? Earlier is better than later, and the younger the child, the shorter the party. Planners recommend no more than 60 to 90 minutes. Don’t worry if Dad can’t make it – celebrate with family at a different, more convenient time. n Cake/Food. Always be conscientious of food allergies, and keep food simple but fun. Choking hazards are something else to be aware of, moms caution. The planners report that the trend in cakes is individual cupcakes – they’re less messy and no one can argue over icing!

n Guest List. Inviting the whole class is probably not feasible, or even desirable, for this age group. Planners suggest that you send a birthday treat to school so everyone can participate in your child’s special day, but only invite your child’s closer circle of friends to the party. Take special care to address invitations thoughtfully – be very clear if parents or siblings are welcome. If done properly, this eliminates confusion and potentially awkward moments/hurt feelings. n Day/Time of Party. Weekends work best, unless school is out, at which time you can take advantage of reduced weekday rates at venues such as indoor inflatable places. Tena Carraher, mother of three from Peachtree City, says an “almost sleepover” is perfect for this age range; guests arrive around dinner and stay late, but not all night. n Favors/Goodie Bags. Great favors for this age range include crafts or items they make themselves at the party. If tied to the party’s theme, it will be a lasting reminder of the fun they had.

Ages 10-12 n Guest List. As children get older, the guest of honor should be involved in determining the guest list. A small group of close friends is best, and at this age, same-sex parties are still pretty much the norm. Also at this age, most guests are dropped off for the party and sleepovers are very popular. Invitations should be mailed at least two to three weeks in advance, and if guests don’t RSVP, planners say it is appropriate to call a week before the party to check their status.

Standard kid food is the safest bet, but now you can branch out by offering more mature sauces for dunking, exotic fruits and smaller snack foods such as popcorn. Kids at this age love to be handson and are more capable in the kitchen, so let them get creative at bars of make-yourown bagel pizzas, ice cream sundaes, hot dogs, etc.

n Day/Time of Party. School schedules obviously dictate the day and time of these affairs, as well venue schedules. Children crave a little more freedom, so consider a movie and a meal or other fun outing where you can still supervise from a short distance. n Cake/Food. Since their palates are also more mature, planners warn that kids at this age have more defined likes and dislikes when it comes to food, so the safest bet is to go with the classics like pizza and burgers. If you want to serve more adventurous fare, communicate that clearly with both guests and their parents beforehand.

n Games. Planners recommend getting the party going with an icebreaker or two, even if guests already know each other (they always enjoy finding out new fun facts about their friends). At this age, it’s also fun to play games in groups or on teams, and for a fun twist take a traditional board game and come up with your own themed questions or activities to make it more personal and memorable. n Opening Presents. Guests should be expected to be more respectful during gift opening as they are genuinely interested in the creative and unique gifts they’ve selected for the guest of honor. Make guests part of the fun by giving them jobs such as handing out the presents, cleaning up the clutter, and recording the giver and gift in a notebook. Then pass the notebook around so guests can write a special birthday message to the honoree for a lasting memento. By this time, children should also know how to properly and thoughtfully write their own thank you notes in a timely manner. n Favors/Goodie Bags. When it comes to favors, customization and personalization are the name of the game for this group, planners say. Because they are old enough to appreciate thoughtful and unique gifts, select a couple of higher quality items that match the party’s theme and then add their names, photos and other personal touches to make them extra special. Think outside the box and make the package part of the gift, using fun items such as makeup bags, mini backpacks or sport bottles.

n Games. Games should be more structured and supervised for this group. Let the birthday child in on the planning and organizing. Have several fun options ready, in case one flops or goes quicker than planned. Carraher discourages letting anyone “lose”; instead assign the child who is “out” a task such as judging the next round before re-entering the game. Hiring a professional entertainer like a magician or clown is a better investment at this age, as guests are more likely to appreciate (and not be afraid of) different types of presentations. n Opening Presents. Children who are used to sitting in school may make gift opening smoother now, but give it structure by making it a fun game or activity. Be sure that the birthday child is the center of attention, with a special hat, chair, etc., and let guests participate as helpers. Be sure to go over basic etiquette rules with the birthday child beforehand so that no one gets their feelings hurt if he or she doesn’t like a gift, already has one, doesn’t understand what it is, etc. www.atlantaparent.com

Going green is all the rage these days, and incorporating green ideals into your child’s lifestyle is key to helping them grow up green. A birthday celebration is an important event in the life of a child, and something they look forward to and remember for years. So why not use the opportunity to implement a few green principles? Here are a few tips to help get your green party started:

Decorating for a green party really lets you get creative. Here are some helpful tips to get you ready for your child’s special day:

n First, find a local outdoor place to hold your gathering, or hold the party in your own backyard, to cut down on energy use. n Invest in plantbased cleaning supplies for the afterparty cleanup. These are safer for the environment and healthier for your home. n Recycle gift-wrapping materials by using paper bags from the grocery store or using salvaged wrapping paper from previous gifts. n Send tree-free invitations and thank you notes made from alternative fibers, like Green Field Paper, made of hemp and recycled paper. n Use other alternatives to paper invitations, like an E-vite online. n Bake an organic cake using pesticide-free ingredients. If it is in the shape of a globe, that’s a plus!

n Make colorful pompoms to hang from the ceiling using recycled tissue paper and newspaper. n Recycled tissue paper and newspaper also create resources for creating your own piñata. Fill this with organic candies, fruits and raisins. n Use paper products for food and drink, or invest in party friendly, reusable plates and cups. n Use natural materials from your own backyard to decorate the mailbox, doorways and the table. n Give take-home projects in goodie bags that incorporate natural materials to give the gift of going green. n If you must use balloons, buy ones made of Latex and not Mylar. Mylar takes several hundred years to biodegrade, while latex only takes six months. n For candles as decorations or on the cake, try natural or multicolored beeswax candles, to avoid chemicals like petroleum. However you choose to celebrate your child’s special day, keep in mind the amount of unnecessary waste and overuse that goes into big events such as a party, and try to minimize your waste with a few of these tips. After all, even Mother Earth enjoys a good party.

For gifts and party favors, use a few of these fun ideas: n For a unique present, buy your child an acre of rainforest or other natural habitat to protect. This is easy to do online and will be a lifetime gift for your child. n Celebrate by planting a tree in your child’s name or by simply creating a garden for your little one. n Plant trees or flowers in the number corresponding to the child’s age. n Ask that guests bring a plant or flower as a birthday present. n Have guests create their own party favors using materials from nature, such as a flowered tiara, a basket woven of pine straw and yarn, or a centerpiece made from materials collected in your own backyard. n For take-home gifts for guests, use recycled paper bags that can be decorated and include natural treats and gifts, avoiding harmful plastics.

Clever Birthday Party Invitations 5 Acres of Fun for all Ages!

The best birthday parties with only 8 minimum. Upgrade to a theme party and have a matching character visit your party.

Why settle for bland birthday party invites when you can spice things up with out-of-thebox ideas? Here are some fun and wacky ways to spread the word about your child’s big-day celebration: Balloon invitations Blow up a big balloon but don’t tie it. Use a large book to close the end while you write the party information with a marker. Deflate the balloon, put it in an envelope and add confetti. Guests have the fun of re-inflating the balloon to read the invite. Interactive invitations Get your invited guests involved in the birthday party theme right from the start with interactive invitations. For example, if you have a dinosaur theme, send a small box with a small plastic dinosaur buried in “glacial ice,” which is really cotton balls. Then the recipient can “dig up” the dinosaur. For a princess birthday party, you can have your invitation rolled up, tied with a colorful ribbon and hand delivered by someone in costume to read aloud like a declaration. “Admit One” tickets Cut pieces of red or orange construction paper into rectangular shapes. Write “Admit One” on one side with a black marker and include the party details on the other side. You can say things like “Ladies and gentlemen,” “Children of all ages” or “Appearing one day only.” Message in a bottle Create a “treasure” map of your neighborhood where X marks the spot of the party. Write the details on the back. Distress or tear the paper around the edges to give it an authentic look. Fold the map in half lengthwise, roll it up and place it inside a bottle. (Don’t forget to soak the bottles overnight first to peel off the labels.) Buy corks from a cookware store to plug up the openings. You can hand-deliver these invitations or ship them to your guests in small boxes. Add sand or other trinkets to make them extra special. www.atlantaparent.com

Puzzle invitations Buy pre-cut blank puzzles and write the party information on them before you break them apart. Or you can make your own puzzles by writing on plain index cards and cutting them into pieces. Guests will have fun before they even arrive at the party with this activity. Dress-up invitations Encourage guests to dress up by sending them invitations that can double as costume accessories. Draw the outline of the accessory on a piece of poster board and write the details around it. You can draw a mask to cut out, a fairy star, or a pirate’s eye patch, depending on your party’s theme. Embellished invitations Buy ready-made invitations that go with the theme of your party, then add some flair of your own. For an “under the sea” party, place the invitation in a cellophane bag and add some sand to the bottom. Add shells and confetti next, and then seal the bag with a twist tie or glue gun. Perfect Party Games by Amy Dusek

Games can be the life or death of any party. A good game can ensure that your guests are entertained and happy. Pin the Tail on the Donkey and Musical Chairs are definite crowd pleasers, but kids have been there and done that! For fresh renditions on classic games Atlanta Parent magazine spoke with birthday party guru Penny Warner. Penny is the author of numerous kids’ party books including Kids Party Games and Activities. Here are the kid-approved games she shared with us.

Name That Tune n Materials: An iPod, CD player or radio. n Directions: All it takes is a little preparation ahead of party time to make this game work. Find popular songs for your child’s age group and put them all on one playlist or CD. The themes to preschool TV shows and nursery rhymes work for young guests. At the party, ask your guests to “Name That Tune!” by playing just a few seconds of the song. If you like, you can hold a bonus round where the top players try to guess how many seconds it will take to name the tune.

Do-It Dice n Materials: White, square boxes from a mail or office supply store. Black permanent marker. n Directions: Take one of the boxes and write down a different physical activity on each side, such as “do a handstand.” Take the other box and write down a different thing to say on each side, such as “recite the alphabet.” At the party have each guest roll the dice and then follow their instructions. Everyone is sure to giggle as they watch their friend singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” while hopping on one foot. This is silly and spontaneous fun!

Wacky Water Brigade Bumbling Bubble Gum n Materials: Large garden gloves and lots of bubble gum. n Directions: Split your guests into two teams and arrange the children in two lines, so the teams are facing each other. Give each player a piece of wrapped bubble gum and a pair of gloves. At the start of the game the first player in each line must unwrap the gum and stick it in his mouth. Once he’s successful (it will be a struggle, thanks to the gloves), he taps the next player to start unwrapping his gum. The first team to have all members chewing gum wins!

n Materials: Buckets, spoons, pails, Tupperware, bowls – anything that will hold water. n Directions: This version of a water brigade has a wacky twist. Instead of only using buckets to transport water from one end of the relay to the other, each guest has a different object. Give guests their objects. Divide the guests into teams. Place one bucket of water per team at one end of your play area. Place an empty bucket on the opposite end of the play area. Each teammate must use his or her object to fill the empty bucket. The team to fill their bucket first wins.

Something’s Missing n Materials: Treasure (costume jewelry, cookies or candy) and written clues. n Directions: For this game you’ll be assembling a treasure hunt. First, assemble what’s missing. It could be a type of party food, party favors, really anything you can build a short story around. Next, find a hiding place for the loot and write clues for the party guests. Each clue should lead guests closer to the loot. At the last clue, the guests should find the loot.

Tail Tag n Materials: Socks or scarves. n Directions: Stuff the sock or scarf in the back of each guest’s pants, so that everyone has a tail. The object of this game is to gather as many tails as possible without losing your own. Kids can run wild and burn off their sugar highs after cake and ice cream. www.atlantaparent.com

With creativity and planning, you can come up with an out-of-the-box party idea sure to make an impression on both your birthday child and guests. Whether you have a girl who loves sparkly bracelets or a boy who loves delving into mysteries, here are some ideas to get your brain going. Improvise, steal, even or come up with your own idea. Don’t be afraid to try something new! The Jewelry Making Party

The Take-Apart Party

Every girl, no matter her age, loves a little bling so why not treat your daughter and her friends to an afternoon of jewelry-filled fun. Go to a crafts store and buy a bunch of beads, ribbon, and other necessities for the girls to create their own unique necklaces, bracelets and rings. Then, let them get a little dirty with a “Diamond Dig;” hide jewels in the sandbox and then let the girls discover all the shiny objects. For one of the treats, serve “stained glass” cookies – the melted candies in the middle will definitely remind the girls of rubies and emeralds. Include ring pops, candy necklaces and other jewelry-related candy in the goodie bags.

Give a small child something with multiple parts and what are they likely to do with it? Take it apart, of course. Tiffany Capuano of Acworth used her son Will’s penchant for deconstruction as the theme for his fifth birthday party. Parents were warned ahead of time about the activities and kids were given goggles and screwdrivers as they came in. They were then sent to the garage where a wonderland of old keyboards, model cars and other household items were waiting to be torn apart. Guests also made keychains out of nuts and bolts as a take-home craft.

The Gaming Party Think about bringing your kid’s favorite game to life. Candy Land, Monopoly and checkers all lend themselves to invitations, party decorations, cool cakes and plenty of activities, even crafts. Make a real-life version of the game board, have guests serve as game pieces and play away. If the kids are older, play a real-life version of Clue or Guess Who? by giving kids “new identities” when they arrive.

The Artistic Expressions Party Bring out the creative side in kids of all ages. Put on a musical parade when they’re little and work your way up to karaoke, music trivia or battle of the bands as they grow older. Don’t forget the budding artists out there – try a fingerpainting party or give older kids an appropriate place to try their hand at graffiti. www.atlantaparent.com

The Spy Party Little boys love to “save the day,” so why not let your little man and his buddies solve the case. Suggest everyone wear their “spy best” and be sure to have magnifying glasses, notepads and candy cell phones ready for the guests as they arrive. You can hide clues throughout the house and yard to help them solve the crime or find the birthday cake, or send them on a spy-themed scavenger hunt. Once the boys have completed their task, play a game of “I Spy.” Offer up a spy-riffic sundae bar to complement the cake, and send them home with goodie bags complete with spy ID badges, criminal profiles and a disguise.

The Scouting Party An ideal way to blend fun with learning for both boys and girls, a scouting party gives participants an opportunity to earn merit badges while having a blast enjoying horseshoes, a scavenger hunt and target challenges. Beth Lyons of Sharpsburg treated her son’s guests to prize badges, bandanas and outdoor gear in their goodie bags.

The Seasonal Showcase Party No matter when your child’s special day is, parents can take advantage of the weather and available seasonal foods and decorations to celebrate in style. For a fall birthday, for example, use autumn leaves or football as themes. If your little one’s birthday is in the winter, create a snowy wonderland with fake snow and other whimsical decorations.
