I
have a very specific method of packing for upcoming travel, thanks to my emotional 8.5-pound Shih Tzu, Elle. I covertly create stacks of clothing, as if I were simply putting away clean laundry, and wait to bring suitcases out until the very last minute. As soon as Elle sees the bags appear in advance of one of my frequent trips—travel journalism is one of my regular beats — she tucks her tail, glares at me from underneath her signature top knot and leaves the room in a huff. However, I get the opposite reaction when she sees her “supplies” appear — a favorite “baby” (the stuffed animal she’s insisted on sleeping with almost every night since I brought her home 13 years ago), leash and harness, treats and her food. In that case, she springs to life, pouncing on the suitcase, wagging her tail and barking at me, as if to say, “Hurry up, Mom! There are places to see and adventures to be had!” It’s not surprising that she loves a change of scenery as much as I do. If you, like our contributors at Atlanta Pet Life, love spending every possible minute with your four-legged best friend, this issue will be a delight. We’ve packed our pages with helpful tips on how to best getaway with your pet. Claudine Wilkins, attorney and founder of Animal Law Source, has provided a helpful toolkit in “Traveling with Your Pet” on page 28, so you’ll know how to best advocate for your animal when flying. Among other fun stories, Laura J. Moss offers her hints for making your cat comfortable on road trips (“Trip Tips” page 26), and Nicole Letts shares what are sure to be travel goals in her “Pets at Work” column (page 10) about the Italian travels of stylist Annette Joseph’s Dachshund. No matter where your travels take you this season, we wish you safety and joy as you explore with your pet.
Working with children or animals can strike fear in any professional photographer, but for our winter cover shoot on a rainy autumn day, Atlanta Pet Life decided to bravely undertake a shoot with both. Photographer Sara Hanna, never one to shy away from a challenge, came up with the idea to depict a family on vacation with their adorable 12-week-old goldendoodle puppy and all (even the four-legged one!) wearing matching robes. The models from Salt Model & Talent piled into the hotel’s fluffy king-size bed, and the magic began. Instead of creating conflict, the youthful energy of the kids and the astonishingly well-behaved pup added to the fun of the day. Special thanks to Mandarin Oriental Atlanta (the Buckhead property now owned by Hilton) for providing a suite; to Salt Model & Talent; to models Katie Tebow, Craig Alexander, Myla Snyder and Weston Atherton; and goldendoodle puppy, Ford (follow him on Instagram @followfordthegoldendoodle). All eyes on Addison,
Mandy Kellogg Rye’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Written by Nicole Letts Photos by Kathryn McCrary
D
escribing Mandy Kellogg Rye as an “influencer” doesn’t do her justice. Rye is a sought-after speaker, established businesswoman, successful shop owner, skilled decorator, entertaining guru and lifestyle blogger. Since she began penning her blog, Waiting on Martha, in 2012, Rye’s 135,000+ Instagram followers have tuned in for daily inspiration ranging from fashion and food to interiors and tablescapes. But Rye acknowledges the real star of her feed is Addison, her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. “Nothing gets likes and engagement as much as dogs,” she says.
6 Winter 2018 | Atlanta Pet Life
Above and top: Addison is all smiles as she poses for one of Mandy Kellogg Rye’s photoshoots. Above right: A well-traveled pup, Addison has stayed at some of the world’s most prestigious hotels. Addison first came onto the scene well before Instagram influencers existed. “There’s this old pet supply store in Chicago where they do puppy adoptions every once in a while, and Addy just happened to be there,” Rye recalls of the time she and her husband lived in the Windy City. “The catch was we were leaving for New York for five days, so we decided if she was there when we got back, it was meant to be. We got back, and she was still there.” Addison, named after
the street where Wrigley Field sits, has been part of the family since. Beyond being doted on by everyone, including Rye’s parents (lovingly referred to as “Grandma and Grandpa”), Addison also plays a crucial role in Rye’s content. Some of her most read posts center around her travels, and Addison is often seen exploring the world alongside her owners. “She’s been on more than 24 flights and stayed at some of the best hotels in the world. She loves flying.” Rye says most luxury resorts offer pet-friendly services, but some go above and beyond to accommodate canine companions. “At The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch (in Colorado), she got her own bed and bowls, and they made her a treat with her name on it.” Rye’s is a popular voice, and brands have taken notice. An emphasis on authenticity makes her accounts magnetic. “For the pet industry, there’s more opportunity than ever to work with influencers. I look for brands I’d naturally use or would want to support. I worked with Bissell, for example, for their pet hair vacuum. Bissell is a company I love, and it has a huge pet foundation where a portion of proceeds go to shelter pets.” Whether she’s seen perched on “her spot” on Rye’s sofa or found popping out of her Goyard bag, readers can to follow Addison’s adventures around Atlanta and beyond. “I don’t believe in reincarnation, but if I did, I’d want to come back as Addison Rye owned by me.” Read more about Addison on Rye’s blog, Waiting on Martha (waitingonmartha.com), or follow the duo on Instagram @waitingonmartha. atlantapetlife.com

The W-Underdogs
Nonprofit gets at-risk kids off the streets and into rescuing dogs Written by Cherese Cobb | Photos courtesy of The W-Underdogs
T
he idea for W-Underdogs (pronounced “wonder dogs”), a grassroots nonprofit that pairs at-risk youth in Peoplestown and South Atlanta with dogs and cats in need, began on a on a spring afternoon in 2013. Army veteran Grace Hamlin was gardening when she noticed a group of crying kids pass by. She was concerned, so she followed them to a park where the children were fighting, enclosed by a circle of adults goading them on. Hamlin, 44, who says that her buzz cut and tattooed forearms make her look like a cop, broke it up. “I realized that there wasn’t anything for kids to do or anywhere for them to go,” Hamlin says. “Their parents often locked them out of their houses while they worked, forcing kids as young as four years old to be protected by their older siblings on the streets.” After an injury took her away from her job as a wheel mechanic, she asked some kids to help her walk her dogs. By the fall of 2013, nearly a dozen kids started hanging around her house, playing with each other and the dogs. “Right now, a dog on a chain with no access to food, water or shelter is normal [to these kids]. Until someone teaches them differently, that will continue to be normal,” Hamlin says. “Bring education to these kids about compassion and kindness to animals, and it will slowly ripple into their own lives.”

Top left: A cruelty liaison officer bonds with a rescued dog. Top right: Jack, a rescue, gets a hug from a W-Underdog friend. Above: Veteran Grace Hamilton dedicates her life to saving animals and helping at-risk kids. Nearly 20 children, ages 5 to 15, have earned the privilege of joining the program by writing an essay about what it means to be a “w-underdog.” The youngest clean up after the animals and walk them. As their skills improve, Hamlin takes them “on the road” to earn money for veterinary care, pet supplies and college tuition by doing odd jobs such as landscaping, hauling brush, dog sitting or poop scooping. “No job is too small. We’ll take anything we can get,” Hamlin says. After 100 hours of community service, the kids earn a spot on the rescue team where they rehome dogs like Nitro, a pit bull who was found tied to his homeless owner, who had died of a drug overdose. In the last four years, the W-Underdogs have rescued 400 dogs, delivered 26,000 pounds atlantapetlife.com

Annette Joseph’s stylish Dachshund
lives la bella vita Written by Nicole Letts | Photography by Annette Joseph
S
ome might say Annette Joseph is the embodiment of the phrase “the hostess with the mostest.” An Atlantabased photo stylist, Joseph is also an editor, author and instructor. When not living and working as a stylist stateside, she’s in Italy renovating a home, writing books and teaching classes through Annette Joseph Workshops and Retreats (annettejosephstyle.com). And she does it all with her chic Dachshund, Vivian (“Vivi”), by her side. Joseph has been traveling with Vivi across the pond since she was a pup. Last year, Vivi spent April through October living in northern Tuscany at La Fortezza, Joseph’s Italian home, photography studio, workshop space and vineyard. It’s safe to say Vivi is living la bella vita. Seven-year-old Vivi is at home overseas. “She truly loves Italy. In the States, she’s more reserved, more anxious, and clearly likes Italy better,” says Joseph. Perhaps 10 Winter 2018 | Atlanta Pet Life
that’s because Vivi is practically a dual doggy citizen. She was born in Italy and spends summers exploring the Lunigiana countryside. Joseph describes Vivi as a farm dog who “runs, hops and even smiles” when she arrives at her Italian home. Throughout the year, Joseph hosts a series of intimate creative workshops for students across a range of ability levels. Attendees can master skills from canning to abstract painting and from food to interiors styling, all under the roof of Joseph’s newly renovated 15th century home. Workshops are generally taught by Joseph and her team of guest instructors from around the world. Vivi hovers nearby. “Vivi is my shadow, and she does everything with me,” Joseph explains. “Everyone loves her. She thinks that she’s part of the host committee.” Beyond frolicking among the vines, greeting guests for their morning coffee and keeping countryside critters at bay,
Left: Vivian makes herself comfortable in the guest quarters at La Fortezza. Above: Vivi, seen here with Annette, lives the good life in Italy.
Born in Italy, Vivian has visited much of the country. Here she poses with Frank, Joseph’s husband, in Venice. Vivi’s day-to-day life at La Fortezza is best described as busy. “First thing [in the morning] she has breakfast and runs to the commercial kitchen to say hello to everyone. She hunts lizards, checks out the grounds and sniffs all over the garden. She rarely naps here; she’s on the go all day.” At the end of a long day, if she does find herself in need of a snooze, Vivi’s favorite spot to curl up is beside her owner on a pillow on the sofa. Are there plans to host pet-inclusive workshops? Joseph says you never know. “That’s a great idea. Vivian and I need to talk about it, but it is a definite possibility in the future.” atlantapetlife.com

Nebo is a people-centered agency with a soft spot for animals
Written by Cherese Cobb | Photos courtesy of Nebo
N
ebo, a marketing and advertising company in Midtown, bills itself as a “human-centered agency built for a digital age,” but its team of strategists, creatives and technologists also apply their passion and storytelling abilities to fight for animals that can't fight for themselves. Nebo was started as a reaction to the industry’s hire and fire culture. “People are looked at as clicks, impressions, conversions and downloads,” says Nebo co-founder Brian Easter. Nebo isn’t about blasting people with 4,000 ads per day or just dollars and cents. “No one lies on their deathbed and thinks, ‘Wow, I ran this awesome campaign in 2013,’" he says. “We're all part of this world. It's our collective responsibility to make it better.” In 2019, the company is renewing its Rescue Pledge that spreads adoption awareness and stands against commercial pet distribution by taking on factory farming where hellish conditions for animals are the norm. Though team members don’t get paid for animal advocacy, it's something everyone believes in. On employee volunteer days, staffers pitch in at local rescues and shelters. “Once, we took a half day to run a Christmas party for PAWS Atlanta,” Easter says. “Dogs and cats sit in the shelter roughly 23 hours per day.” Dressed in Santa hats, Nebo employees played with dogs in the shelter’s gated yard and tossed tennis balls, squeaky toys and handed out biscuits. They entertained the cats with toy mice, feather wands and snuggle sessions. Whether they’re climbing trees to rescue kittens or scooping up a stray at Octane Coffee — both have happened — the employees care in tangible ways. “If we find an animal, we take responsibility; typically a company leader or Nebo as a company will pay for all of its medical needs,” says Easter. The adopt-and-rescue culture was partly inspired by Cami, a 10-year-old American Staffordshire 12 Winter 2018 | Atlanta Pet Life

In fall 2008, her owner kicked her out of the vehicle and left her near Nebo’s parking lot, where she was found whimpering underneath a car. President Kimm Lincoln coaxed her into the office with peanut butter and crackers. Easter loved her immediately and adopted her. “She's the sweetest dog that I've ever had,” he says. “The worst thing she'll do is give you too many kisses.” Though she doesn’t come to the office as often these days, she paved the way for the agency’s nearly 100 employees to bring their more than 30 dogs and cats to work in rotation. The office’s pet-friendliness is evident. Dogs Molly and Quaid lounge in teepees, on couches and occasionally in their owners’ office chairs. They chew and drool on environmentally-friendly toys made by Pet Lifestyle and You. “There's a treat area where Kimm and I sit. I think all of the dogs know. They come visit us multiple times per day,” Easter says. Though the dogs sometimes scare delivery people, they help give Nebo staffers a collective sense of love and purpose. Get in your WOD The start of a new year is usually synonymous with lofty resolutions of getting back into shape. Instead of ditching your daily dog walks in favor of the gym, bring your pup to your workout. Buckhead’s CrossFit 404 encourages members to do just that. As one of Atlanta’s premiere gyms, the amenities of CrossFit 404 are hard to beat. And dogs are welcome during any of the classes. There’s a leash hitch and communal doggy water bowl under the complimentary coffee station. Want to see how pups are treated at CrossFit 404? Nine hundred dogs — and their owners — come for an hour and 15 minutes throughout the day, starting at 11 a.m. and ending at 3:15 p.m. Canines of all shapes, sizes and breeds “doggie paddle” to Top 40s and 80s music piped in via intercom. “Some dog owners hover their dogs over [the pool], and their feet start kicking before they ever hit the water,” says Amy Dietrich, Piedmont Park’s Director of Communications, Marketing and Public Relations. “Water-shy dogs that aren’t comfortable in the pool typically just run around on the green space and play with other dogs.” Vendors offer smoothies, coffee, paninis, ice cream and adult beverages (excluding the Sunday morning session). They sell bone-shaped dog treats and a rainbow of plastic frisbees. Dog park sponsors like Dog Days and Bark Atlanta host information tents. They give stuff away on a smaller level like dog bowls, leashes and doggie poop bag holders. “Sometimes, we’ll get bigger giveaways like doggie daycare stays and grooming sessions,” Dietrich says. The 10th Splish Splash Doggie Bash provides Instagram-worthy photo ops for fur-parents. “Most people bring their own smartphones [in waterproof phone cases and Ziploc bags] and selfie sticks,” Dietrich says. “OldSpeaks Creative takes photographs of the event for our Facebook and Instagram pages.” There are some rules dog owners have 16 Winter 2018 | Atlanta Pet Life

Dog of the Year Contest
One Samoyed to Rule Them All Sookie, a two-and-a-half-yearold Samoyed, was crowned Piedmont Park’s Dog of the Year. Named after the main character from True Blood, Sookie is strong-willed, independent and loyal. “She’s loving and protective of her family but can only stand cuddling with her parents for a few minutes before getting too warm and retreating to the coldest parts of the floor,” says owner Blake Watson. “She literally puts her nose in anything you’re doing near her. In part because we always say she has a severe case of FOMO (fear of missing out).” Because there aren’t many Samoyeds in the Atlanta area, Sookie beat out 279 dogs in an online photo contest. Then she competed in-park against five other finalists, including a 5-year-old Siberian husky named Azlan who sang along to

Atlanta’s autumnal pool party benefits the Piedmont Park Conservancy, the nonprofit that maintains a three-acre, off-leash canine haven with separate enclosures for large (30+ lbs) and small (<30 lbs) dogs. Sookie surprised the crowd by jumping through a hula hoop to catch her favorite toy—a tennis ball. “She’s a very intelligent dog, so it probably took a couple of hours for her to understand the trick. Now, when I hold a hula hoop (or any circular tunnel or ring) and tell her to go through it, she’ll give it a modest attempt as long as there’s a nice treat at the end,” Watson says. When the judges from Bark ATL, Dancing Dogs Yoga and the Piedmont Park Conservancy announced Sookie’s name, “my jaw dropped and a sheer wave of excitement filled me. I felt so proud of her!” Instagram: @sookiethesamoyed this once-per-year opportunity and you feel the splashing of wet dogs, you can’t help but smile. ur four-legged friends are part of the family, so it’s no wonder that more travelers than ever are choosing to hit the road — or take to the skies — with their pets. According to a recent survey by Rover.com, the nation’s largest network of pet sitters and dog walkers, 37 percent of pet parents travel with their animals, and nearly 40 percent say they’ve skipped a trip to stay home with their fur babies. Those trends ring true for Diane Murray, the Alpharetta-based owner of Sparkles, an 8-year-old Shih Tzu. The pampered pup, that has more than 50,000 followers on her @sparklesthediva Instagram account, has traveled in style on planes, trains and automobiles to destinations around the Southeast and beyond, both for fun and for “work” fashion events and pet conferences where she’s invited to appear. “Traveling with Sparkles has definitely enriched my own travel experience,” Murray says, adding, “Even for fun, I normally only pick pet-friendly travel destinations.” Here are a few places that will treat your besties like the VIP — that’s very important pet — they are.

STAYCATION Whether your pet is a seasoned world traveler or has never ventured outside your home, an Atlanta-area staycation could be just what you need to indulge in some relaxation or to see how your four-legged friend might do on a farther journey. Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta (fourseasons.com/ atlanta) welcomes furry guests before they even step through the door with a welcome sign and water bowl outside. They’ll feel cozy in the five-star Midtown property with a plush dog bed, complimentary bottled water and chef-made biscuits in the guest room. Looking to venture out? The team is happy to recommend pet-friendly restaurants within walking distance. While most travelers think of bringing their pup along, the Loews Atlanta Hotel (loewshotels.com/atlanta-hotel) goes out of its way to make sure dogs and cats are comfortable. The “Loews Love Pets” program, which has been offered nationwide since 2000, includes a room service menu developed by a licensed veterinarian. Standouts include the “Cat’s Meow” salmon filet and the “Bow Wow Tenderloin” of beef with eggs and rice. Each pet receives a personalized welcome letter from the hotel’s general manager and a list of local pet services, and the concierge is happy to arrange pet sitting and walking services. Just an hour and a half drive northwest of Atlanta, Barnsley Resort (barnsleyresort. com) is a getaway for those who want to explore the great outdoors without traveling far. The dog-friendly 3,000-acre property — the centerpiece of which is a ruined manor house dating back to the 1840s — features miles of hiking trails and lush gardens to explore with your canine best friend. When booking, look for the special Pampered Pets rate that waives the standard $75 pet fee (which includes pet beds, bowls, bottled water and treats) and makes a donation of the same

TRAVEL NEAR If a vacation doesn’t feel complete without sand and surf, there are plenty of places within a manageable driving distance from Atlanta that will quench your desire for the beach and welcome your pup. For instance, W South Beach (marriott.com) lets your pup rub elbows with the beautiful people in Miami’s most famous neighborhood and pampers him with a special cozy dog bed, plush toy upon arrival and a W Hotels pet tag. Ask the concierge for the best scenic walks and dog-friendly beaches nearby. The Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village (marriott.com) on Florida’s southwest coast not only welcomes four-legged guests but even has a dedicated menu with treats of berries and bacon and grilled filet mignon just for them. Don’t feel like dining in your room? The resort’s dockside restaurant, The Nauti Mermaid, offers “yappy hour” so you to enjoy a meal together. Self-catering a beachside stay is another popular option, and according to Rover.com, 14 percent of guests traveling with pets opt for a short-term vacation rental, as opposed to staying with friends or family or in a hotel. Shore Dreams Vacation Rentals (shoredreams.net) has a variety of properties spread across Florida, from quaint condos overlooking the waves to larger, golf course-adjacent cottages that can feel like an upgraded home-away-from-home. Perhaps a taste of old-world luxury fits the bill for your vacation. Two-and-a-half hours east of Atlanta lies The Wilcox (thewilcox.com), a historic property in Aiken, South Carolina, that dates back to 1989. While you’re taking part in the area’s many equestrian opportunities, shopping, boating, golf and historic tours, your pet can enjoy pampering in the form of freshly baked treats, turkey jerky turndown service and even pet photography sessions. Each furry guest receives a Wilcox pet tag for extra security. History meets luxury at The Jefferson (jeffersondc.com) in Washington, D.C., where the five-star hotel’s in-house historian, Georgetown University fellow Susan Sullivan Lagon, Ph.D., offers curated “Famous Dogs and Animals in American History” itineraries to explore together. The Beaux Arts building dates back to 1923 and will appeal to both history buffs and luxury atlantapetlife.com

With the “Fur Mama” package, pet parents will score a keepsake Tshirt emblazoned with “My Babies Have Fur” and amenities, including banana granola bar turndown treats and a “doggy bag” picnic — complete with a watermelon “pup”sicle — to enjoy in adjacent Grant Park. While you’re in town, explore the concierge’s list of pet-friendly restaurants, boutiques and groomers. Beyond the somewhat expected toys, tags, beds and recommendations for local groomers and pet sitters, Provenance Hotels’ (provenancehotels.com) four luxurious properties in Portland, Oregon, get creative in welcoming both dogs and cats. Now, four-legged visitors’ owners can schedule in-room pet massages, acupuncture and reiki treatments, all by licensed area practitioners. The forwardthinking properties also offer pet spiritual menus for guests that include books on pet psychology and recommendations for the best area hikes for you and your dog. Baha Mar in the Bahamas has been one of the Caribbean’s most anticipated resort openings, and the Grand Hyatt (hyatt.com) there features dedicated pet-friendly guest rooms for you and your pampered pup. The oceanfront resort in Nassau has people-centric activities, including a 100,000-square-foot casino and entertainment space, an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, pristine beaches and pools. Trip Tips
The Perfect Road Trip With Your Cat Written by Laura J. Moss
To them, it’s playing freely. To you, it’s playing safe.
Ask the ‘expurrts’
Before you embark on a trip with your feline friend, consult your veterinarian to ensure your pet is in good health and up to date on vaccinations and medications. If you’re planning a long excursion, you may also want to inquire about potentially treating your cat for motion sickness.
Safety fur-st
It may be tempting to have your cat curl up in your lap while you drive, but it’s safer for both of you if he or she is tucked safely into a carrier. A startled cat may dart about the vehicle or hide at your feet, creating a potentially unsafe environment for the driver. Plus, having your cat restrained in a secure carrier can help keep both of you safe in the event of a sudden stop.
Leashes aren’t just for dogs
Travelers appreciate the opportunity to stretch their legs on a road trip, but if you plan to let your kitty out of the car, find a quiet area for a pit stop. Before you hit the road, ensure your cat has a snug-fitting harness and is comfortable on a leash. Your cat should also wear a collar with up-to-date tags. However, never attach a leash to your cat’s collar as this could cause choking.

PET LIFE EXPERTS | Animal Law
Traveling with Your Pet Written by Claudine Wilkins, founder of Animal Law Source
O
ur pets are part of the family, so why not take them along when you travel? Of the many ways to get to your destination, flying is the trickiest when traveling with four-legged friends. Lately, traveling pets have gotten a bad rap. For instance, a woman on a Frontier Airlines flight made news recently when passengers jeered her for bringing an emotional support animal onboard. Allegedly, when she made the reservation, she failed to mention it was a squirrel. She refused to leave the plane, so all passengers were forced to disembark, and the police were called to escort her and the tiny companion away. The airline responded publicly, saying squirrels are considered rodents and not allowed. Earlier this year, a passenger wanted to bring her emotional support peacock aboard a United Airlines flight. In this case, birds of a feather couldn’t flock together because the peacock didn’t meet the guidelines. What about snakes on planes? More than the title of a bad movie, the reality could happen if someone claims to get comfort from a pet snake. People might wrongly assume that their amphibians meet emotional support animal guidelines, but they’re not on the list of animals allowed for this kind of travel. The examples can go on and on. The government estimates two million animals fly commercially every year. Many airlines allow small pets to travel in portable kennels under seats, where the owners are responsible for their safety. In general, only four animals are allowed in the cabin 28 Winter 2018 | Atlanta Pet Life
per flight. When folks make reservations online, they may be disappointed when they get to the airport because they’ve been assigned to another flight if the one they booked is at capacity for in-cabin animals. Larger pets travel in cargo holds, where they can be exposed to extreme heat or cold and loud noises from plane engines. After an 84 percent uptick in animal-related instances that include urinating, defecating, biting and attacks on flights, Atlantabased Delta Airlines announced new restrictions to curb the abuse of its once-flexible policy, including bans on certain breeds. Earlier this year, Delta announced that customers must provide 48 hours advance notice and submit three pieces of supporting documentation to bring an animal on board. United, American and Southwest have adopted their own policies on support animals in the last year as the number of “comfort” pets on flights continues to increase. A close friend of mine has been wheelchair-bound for 53 years, one of the longest recorded times for any person living today. As a pet owner himself, he likens having a service animal to someone who relies on an oxygen tank: The animal goes wherever the person goes. While the American Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to people everywhere in the U.S., the moment you step on the plane, the Air Carrier Access Act takes over. For example, the ADA’s definition of service animals includes only dogs or miniature horses that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. The Air Carrier Access Act allows people with mental disabilities to fly with their emotional support animals free of charge in the cabin. atlantapetlife.com
Owner Rules and Responsibilities Keep these important things in mind before you travel. • Schedule a vet visit to confirm your pet can handle the stress of in-cabin or baggage compartment flying. • Request a copy of your pet’s health records. Most airlines require paperwork documenting current vaccinations and a valid veterinarian-signed health certificate. • Affix a current picture of your animal to its carrier and attach a tag listing your phone number to its collar. • Get your pet microchipped. If your pet already has one, make sure that your information — including a cell phone number — is current in the database.
• Review restrictions, including quarantines, placed on pets traveling to certain destinations. Most restrictions apply to international travel, but states such as rabies-free Hawaii have strict rules about admitting animals and can quarantine for up to 120 days. • Confirm what kind of carrier your airline allows on its planes. If you must ship a dog, it’s up to you to make sure your pet is on the plane every time you take off. Ask a flight attendant for confirmation from the baggage handlers that the dog is on board or talk to the baggage handlers yourself. Be polite, but persistent.
Wiki Wags brand Disposable Male Dog Wraps Accident proof your home TODAY!
• Purchase a carrier that meets airline carry-on specifications and gives your pet room to stand up and turn around comfortably. • Confirm the location of designated pet-relief areas at the airport and make sure your pet gets some exercise before placing him in a carrier. • Try to fly direct, which will shorten travel time and minimize handling by airport employees.
Four great sizes Dual Tabs Comfortable
• Act as your pet’s advocate: Let airline personnel know that you’re traveling with a pet. Ask them to check on your pet if there are delays.
If a passenger doesn’t want to be seated close to a service animal, flight attendants will not instruct the service animal owner to move. Instead, they will try to move the person affected by the animal, since forcing the person with the service animal to move would be considered discriminatory. To find a balance, those who abuse the system should be stopped, and those traveling with animals should be considerate of others. Whether you’re on a plane with a service or emotional support animal or just bringing your pet for fun, there are ways to make it work. In a plane, animals generally must remain in their soft carriers under the seat, not on a lap or roaming the aisles. Even if your pet is well behaved, remember that other passengers atlantapetlife.com
may have allergies, be fearful or may just not like pets. Start by talking to the passengers around you, let them know you have an animal and thank them for their understanding. Some experts recommend lightly covering your carrier with a blanket because dark places can keep pets calm. Give treats or place toys inside the carrier to occupy our pet. Whether you’re traveling with your pet or sitting next to someone who is, be courteous and remember the law allows for pet travel with certain restrictions. Educate yourself about the rules so you can follow them and enjoy the journey. Claudine Wilkins is the founder of Animal Law Source and an attorney specializing animal-related issues in Georgia. Traveling Is the
Cat’s Meow Trip tips for your feline
Written by Sparrow Marcioni | Photos by J.M. Fitzgerald and GoodPhoto
M
ost cat parents have experienced the drama of tricking, forcing or placing kitty in a travel carrier to visit the veterinarian. The journey is not likely to be peaceful for owners, and the destination is rarely pleasant for him. If the trip to and from the vet is the only experience your cat has with travel, it’s understandable that he doesn’t enjoy the prospect of going on a vacation. Traveling with your cat can also be complicated since most hotels and transportation services are geared more for canine travel companions. Cats, often fearful of the unfamiliar, have an entirely different outlook. These simple tips require some care and planning, but they can help turn your nervous feline into an ideal travel companion. Get comfortable. To have an enjoyable trip with your kitty, begin by making the experience more familiar. Leave the travel carrier out and available for exploration with the door open, even when you’re not going anywhere. If you can get him to become at ease with the travel carrier, that’s a good start. Cozy carrier. Choose a carrier that is appropriate to your cat’s size and the length of your trip. Carriers can be soft-sided, plastic or wire, and you can make them more comfortable by adding a soft blanket. Make sure to secure the carrier to the car with a seat belt or bungee cord for safety. Longer trips may require a larger carrier or even a dog crate to accommodate a litter box and water. Consider placing two or three pee pads layered in the bottom of the carrier. Should an accident occur, you can remove the top one and everything remains clean.
Test trips. Taking your cat on short test trips may ease tension and make the real trip more enjoyable. Try taking your cat to the pet store for a treat or on short errands to show that going places can be fun. He’ll start to associate trips with positive experiences. Calming techniques. Feline pheromone sprays such as Feliway, Bach Flower Rescue Remedy or Jackson Galaxy’s Spirit Essence are organic remedies for stress. If your kitty is more distressed than usual, or you’re traveling for an extended period, you may want to add Zylkene by Vetoquinol that contains a naturally calming ingredient from cow’s milk. Available without a prescription, the capsules can help relieve anxiety. For more intense bouts of stress, consider requesting a prescription from your vet, who may prescribe Xanax or Gabapentin. Likewise, if your kitty experiences motion sickness or is vomiting during travel, your vet may prescribe a nausea-preventing medicine such as Cerenia. Necessary supplies. Advance preparation is key for any trip, but it’s even more necessary with your cat. The first step is to have him microchipped at your veterinarian and registered with your contact information. Additionally, your kitty should always be wearing a nametag collar with your phone number. He should also wear a harness and leash, especially when traveling through an airport, where you will likely be asked to take him out of the carrier during security. Pack a bag with a few essentials, including favorite cat treats, a catnip toy (Yeowww! Catnip toys are always a hit), wipes, antibiotic cream, extra pee pads, regular food and possibly some calming wipes. When traveling by car, it’s a good idea to bring a reflective sunshade to cover the carrier and a blanket for warmth in cold weather. Cats’ normal body temperatures are 100 to 102°, so your cat experiences temperature shifts differently than you do. Fly away. If you are traveling by air, it’s always best for kitty to travel under your seat and not in the cargo area. Most airlines charge a nominal fee to bring a small pet with you. However, in the event they must be transported without you, always zip tie the doors and sides of the carrier so they don’t open accidentally. One of the most important things to remember is that if you show stress, your cat will, too. The more enjoyable trips you take together, the more your cat will look forward to adventures with you. and said, “I feel better now!” Then he jumped up to interact with other children for the very first time. “That’s what pet therapy is all about,” she says. On another outing, they were visiting Emory Rehabilitation Hospital when the daughter of a patient asked Sinanian if she would put Aiden up on her father’s bed. Suddenly, he began talking to the pup. “The daughter was in tears,” said Sinanian, who is the owner of Pupcakes Playcare, daycare for small dogs and boarding and grooming in Buckhead. “She told me he hadn’t spoken to anyone since he’d been hospitalized.” On the way out, Sinanian saw a young man in a wheelchair. He asked if Aiden was a Maltese, and they stopped to visit. After a few minutes, the young man’s mother tapped Sinanian on her shoulder. “Those were the first words he has spoken in the six weeks since his injury,” she said. Aiden’s charm has worked on seniors in the Lenbrook Memory Care unit, children at Laurel Heights private behavioral and psychiatric treatment center and families of ill children staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Aiden even brings relief to stressed out college students taking exams at Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State University.

A
iden Carnig of Buckhead, a Maltese therapy dog, brightens the bleakest days for people dealing with grief, illness, rehabilitation and recovery. But according to his owner, Arlene Sinanian, Aiden has a unique talent. With a nudge from his cold nose and a swish of his feathery tail, he coaxes non-verbal kids and adults to speak after long periods of silence. “I call it his superpower,” says Sinanian, a 12-year volunteer with Happy Tails Pet Therapy, an organization that provides animal-assisted activity and therapy to people of all ages at medical and therapeutic institutions. Except for a paid administrator, the organization is comprised entirely of volunteer owners, their family members and certified therapy pets. They always work with two or more teams that sometimes include certified cats and bunnies. The teams meet briefly prior to each visit, but once they arrive, Aiden and the other pets go right to work. “The animals are a bridge between us and the patients,” says Sinanian, a past president of Happy Tails. “It’s extremely fulfilling. Aiden and I visit five to seven times a month, so we get to know our clients, and they get to know us. I receive as much out of it as they do.” Aiden’s superpowers work on young and old. One day when Aiden and Sinanian were visiting Kate’s Club, an organization for kids who have experienced the loss of a loved one, the talented pup sidled up to a young boy who was stretched out on the floor. When Aiden put his nose against the child’s, Sinanian asked, “Would you like to read to him?” The child picked up a book and began whispering to the dog. After a time, he turned to Sinanian 32 Winter 2018 | Atlanta Pet Life

PET EXPERTS | Veterinary Profile
Dr. John Younker, Common Companion Vet Co. Written by Laura J. Moss | Photo by Katie Tiller Photography
I
t’s not unusual to hear people bemoan the loss of personalized care and first-rate customer service often associated with small towns, but Dr. John Younker of Common Companion Vet Co. has made it his mission to bring that kind of veterinary care to Atlanta. His Inman Park practice may be located in the country’s ninth largest metropolitan area, but he wants clients and their four-legged friends to know that he’s willing to go the extra mile for them — even in the snow. During the snowstorm that hit Atlanta last January, Dr. Younker got a call that a feline patient was suffering from an obstruction. The roads were icy and too dangerous to navigate, so he set out on foot from his Grant Park home. “It was an emergency, drop-what-you’re-doing situation,” he says. “My staff couldn’t get here, so the owner assisted me with anesthetizing his cat and relieving the obstruction with a urinary catheter. But while we were doing that, [the cat’s owner] got a little woozy and started to pass out, so I had to take care of him, too. We couldn’t wait, though. The cat was in renal failure, and if we’d waited even a day, the cat probably would’ve died.” Such tales are common in Dr. Younker’s line of work. He comes from a long line of veterinarians — both his uncle and great uncle

are local vets — and he enjoys that every day on the job is a little different. “I like the excitement that comes with the job and being a jack of all trades,” he says. Dr. Younker, who treats both dogs and cats and owns a 6-yearold golden retriever named Scout, says he’s long been an animal lover, but he thinks it’s important to provide care and compassion for people, too. “A lot of people get into veterinary medicine because they love animals, but what sets Common Companion apart is not only do we care about pets, but we also care about people and how they’re treated. I think there’s this dual component of veterinary medicine of not only great, high-quality medical care for the pets but also taking care of the humans,” he explains. “Increasingly in veterinary medicine, things are becoming more corporate as opposed to us, a locally owned small business. We care about the people and the pets in the neighborhood because we live in the neighborhood.” This sentiment makes Common Companion’s clients feel like they’re visiting a small-town vet, even in the middle of a big city. early 1,000 guests came together to support Chastain Horse Park in Buckhead for the nonprofit’s first Fall Family Spectacular on Oct. 20. The free-to-attend event raised $40K though sponsorships, individual donations and paid activities, including pony rides, face painting and food and merchandise sales. Guests also enjoyed a horse show, a horseback archery and Atlanta Mounted Police demonstration, parade with horses in costume, an equine vaulting performance and barn tours. Chastain Horse Park, the oldest and largest urban park of its kind in Atlanta, is home to 60 horses. It offers a nationally recognized therapeutic riding program that includes Hippotherapy, Therapeutic Riding, Equine-Assisted Learning and other initiatives. “We work with children, teens and adults with a broad range of disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, developmental and speech delays, cerebral palsy and more,” explains Executive Director Trish Gross. “The ability to serve riders with disabilities and those without is challenging yet humbling.” For more information, visit chastainhorsepark.org.
