She was riding with a group one day in 1987 when a fellow cyclist — “a really cute guy” — pulled up alongside her and remarked approvingly, “Nice bike.” Momentarily caught off guard, she smiled and returned the compliment: “You have a nice bike, too.”

Three years later, Sue and Bob Neurath tied the matrimonial knot. The Tucker residents have been married — and riding bicycles together — for the 27 years ever since.

local masters player strikes badminton gold

By John Ruch Local badminton player Peter Chang brought home a gold medal from the World Masters Games, an Olympics-style event for older athletes held in April in New Zealand. And he’s telling fellow seniors that they can play the game he loves closer to home.

“It’s the all-body exercise,” said Chang, 69, about badminton’s appeal. “There’s a lot of twisting and turning and smashing … It keeps me very fit and healthy.”

Chang, a real estate investment professional, has lived in Sandy Springs for almost 35 years. He was born in Malaysia, one of many Asian countries where badminton is a popular sport. He grew up playing the game, including on his college team in Hong Kong. When his career began, eventually bringing him to metro Atlanta, he “quit playing for a long time.”

In the late 1990s, Chang’s children headed to college and he found himself not only returning to badminton, but getting serious about it. He began winning some competitions, including the World Morning Cup, an amateur badminton competition, in Taipei, Taiwan.

This year, he headed to Auckland, New Zealand, for the Summer Masters Games, a multi-sports event generally aimed at athletes 35 and older. This year’s edition drew more than 25,000 athletes.

Chang competed in both singles and doubles badminton, winning the singles gold in his age category.

“Unfortunately, you pay for everything,” Chang said of the Masters Games, which has drawn some press coverage for significant entrance fees and related travel expenses. However, he said, he enjoyed the competition, the sightseeing, and the chance to meet people from around the globe. He said he met someone from the tiny island nation of Mauritius and competed against a player from Papua New Guinea.

Such international competition begins with local practice. While the similar game of tennis is hugely popular in metro Atlanta, badminton is on the rise, Chang said.

“Badminton is a very popular sport,” Chang said, and follows along “with the influx and growth of the international population, especially after the [1996] Olympics.”

He said he has about 15 metro Atlanta badminton venues to choose from, ranging from rec centers to gyms to churches, often on restriped tennis or basketball courts. In a sign of the sport’s growing popularity, the area’s first complex of badminton-only courts is set to open this month in Suwanee, Chang said, thanks to an Indian-American fan.

Chang has tried tennis, too, but the techniques are different. Badminton is more about nuanced wrist movements, while tennis is more about arm swings, he said.

“I used to play tennis … but I don’t play anymore because it screws up my badminton,” Chang said.

However, there’s another sport catching Chang’s eye: pickleball. A kind of tennis played on a badminton court with paddles and a plastic ball full of holes, pickleball is also growing in local popularity. A new Dunwoody park has pickleball courts included by popular demand.

“I’m going to try pickleball,” Chang said. “I like it.”

For older adults interested in renewing the love affair they experienced with bike riding as kids, the most important attributes in the equipment are comfort and fit, Nagel said.

“Go to a reputable bike shop that has a staff that will help you pick one out and fit you on it,” he advised. “Getting a bike that’s designed for the terrain you’re going to be riding on is important — a mountain bike, gravel bike, road bike or dirt bike handle differently. And they’ll make sure you have a comfortable, level seat at the correct height, and handlebars that are at the right height and shape.”

Added Sue, “When they’re just beginning, a lot of people don’t know what kind of riding they want to do, so I’d recommend borrowing or renting a couple different styles of bikes to find out what kind you feel most comfortable with.

“If you’ll be trying to keep up with others, like in group

rides, you’ll want equipment comparable to theirs. But if you just want to enjoy a ride, you can get a basic entry-type bike and have a wonderfully good time.”

Over the past five years, Dunwoody retiree Don Hall figured he has cycled more than 55,000 miles — that’s the equivalent of circling the Earth twice, plus a round trip from Atlanta to Seattle.

“My typical ride is 35 milesplus,” said Hall, a Vietnam vet who served in the Marine Corps before embarking on a 50-year career in sales and sales management. “It keeps me in shape, and I enjoy the camaraderie with other riders.

Many of my best friends are cyclists.”

Like most everyone else, the 68-year-old Hall started riding bikes as a child to get to friends’ homes and around the neighborhood.

“About 40 percent of our customers are 50 and over,” said Hunger, owner of ElectroBike Georgia in Brookhaven. “Many of these people have hip or knee problems, so they like the fact that they can engage the pedalassist feature and not have to pull up on the pedal like you do on a traditional bike pedal, especially ones with toe guards.”

With pedal-assist activated, e-bikes can cover 25-35 miles on a full charge, according to Hunger.

His multi-geared bikes also can be pedaled in the usual manner, or propelled entirely by the electric motor at speeds up to 15 mph, he noted.

“We have a large seat selection as well as baskets, helmets and other accessories so customers can tailor their bike to their specific needs.”

Another option for physically challenged seniors is operated by the city of Decatur.

Silver Spokes is an innovative year-old program designed to “get seniors back on a bike and learn how to ride again,” according to Sara Holmes, adult program supervisor for Decatur Active Living.

For a nominal fee, participants, who typically have mobility issues, attend a class to re-acquaint them with the rules of cycling, then venture out for a supervised ride on adult tricycles provided by the program, along with helmets.

“A lot of our seniors want to learn how to get back on two wheels,” said Holmes, “but we start with three so they can get comfortable with the idea of riding again and not have to worry so much about maintaining stability and balance.”

Silver Spokes’ next round of classes are set for September and October.

If you’d like to learn more, the best place to start is your local bicycle shop. Many shops sponsor group rides and/or have info about groups in the area.

Levine provides respected advice as a relationship columnist and contributor to recognized publications, such as Psychology Today. She explains the importance of travel.

“It helps keeps us vital by expanding our world, introducing us to new people, places and things,” she said.

“This marked change from daily routines (which tend to get tedious and boring) is bound

to add a hefty dose of joy and renewed energy to our lives.”

It also helps older adults forget about, or at least temporarily suspend, minor pains and worries. But what if finances are somewhat tight?

Not all seniors can fund their dream trip to Europe.

Levine has an answer. “Travel doesn’t necessarily have to be exotic or costly,” she said. “There are always new adventures to be found closer to home. It can be walking in a park, a nearby museum or even dinner at an ethnic restaurant [nearby].”

NEW Durable Power of Attorney Law in Georgia

O

n July 1, 2017, a new law affecting Georgia durable powers of attorney (for financial matters) will go into effect. The Uniform Power of Attorney Act is designed to minimize financial fraud and exploitation. Thus, “general” powers allowing an agent to “do anything the principal could do” may no longer be accepted by banks and other financial institutions. Banks do not have to accept any power of attorney; however, we have been assured that if a customer presents a power of attorney on the new statutory form, the banks will honor it unless there is evidence of fraud, misrepresentation or undue influence over the principal.

Although the statutory form, along with the Georgia code (law), is much better than the one before it, it does not specifically include protections for seniors who are aging and want to take measures to protect their assets in the event they could qualify for government assistance programs, like Veterans Benefits or Medicaid. In order to completely protect yourself, your new power of attorney must include certain “Special Instructions.” Thus, a “standard” form, even on the new statutory form, will not be enough for most seniors who care about protecting their families and their assets.

Today, Barto’s granddaughter is a college graduate and is working in the fashion industry.

Another grandson, Jonathan, was intrigued with New York City as a young boy. And leave it to Barto, she discovered the perfect trip.

Today Jonathan is studying and playing football for Columbia University. Barto thinks that part of his comfort in choosing New York over other venues is due to exploring the city years before with his grandma.

It’s clear that with the many intergenerational trips to choose from, the only fear Barto may have is running out of grandchildren.

By Isadora Pennington Roll up your sleeves — it’s time to talk about one of my favorite, messy eats. Wings are a popular bar food with something of a cult following across the nation.

As with many popular dishes, there are multiple claims to the invention of the wing. One of the more popular theories is that they were a creation of restaurateur Teressa Bellissimo at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY. Some say Bellissimo made buffalo

wings as a late-night snack for her son and friends, while others believe it was due to accidentally ordering too many wings and needing to find something to do with them.

Regardless of the reasons for inventing the dish, the buffalo wing was an instant success at the bar and quickly spread nationwide. Vastly different effects can be achieved by changing the sauces or rubs that are used, and wings are typically served with ranch or bleu cheese for dipping.

The best way to repel mosquitoes is to remove any standing water.

Water can collect in many spaces you might not think of. Magnolias with their waxy leaves can hold water, as do French drains, plant saucers, gutters, etc.

If you have any drains that don’t drain well, you can place mosquito dunks in them. They kill mosquito larvae which helps keep them from breeding. The dunks usually come in a pack of four or six, though you only need a piece of the dunk for most areas of water.

If you have a bird bath, be sure to change the water every other day, or add a dripper to it.

As always, try to stay inside during late afternoon to dusk when the mosquitos are most active. If you’re having an evening outdoor get together, place some fans around. Fans actually blow the mosquitoes away. They’re effective and keep the air moving.

Also, it’s a good idea to wear long sleeves. If you choose to use bug spray, you’ll want to know that the more effective sprays are those that contain DEET. Enjoy your summer outdoors, but be mindful of those pesky mosquitoes!

People undergoing cancer treatments often benefit from having something to keep their hands and minds busy.

“They just stitched their way through it,” said Weiner with admiration.

Weiner wants the shop to serve as a resource for everyone who’d like to try or already enjoys the art of needlepoint, and in a larger sense, she hopes to play a part of keeping the craft alive.

Find a home in the Mountains before you retire

By Kathy Dean The mountains are a cool place to be and many metro Atlantans plan to retire there. But they’re not all waiting to claim their little spot of heaven. Some are making the move to find or build their mountain home and enjoy it now.

Duane and Kim Champlin are currently overseeing construction of their Old Toccoa Farm mountain retreat. “We had a weekend cabin near Blue Ridge before we retired, and we fell in love with the area,” Kim said.

Old Toccoa Farm, just 85 miles north of Atlanta, is near historic Blue Ridge, Ga., and about 15 miles from the Aska Adventure Area, which features camping, hiking and water activities like tubing, canoeing and kayaking.

Buying a mountain home has become a common plan for many couples who retire near communities such as Blue Ridge.

by retirees, that’s not the whole story. “We’re seeing younger buyers wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of Atlanta for a weekend getaway, and it turns into a part-time home if their career allows them to telecommute,” said King.

He suggests that people not wait for retirement to begin looking for their dream retirement home. Good advice, considering the current rush to the hills.

According to Duane, the couple wanted long-range mountain views. “We got that, plus we’re living on a golf course in a gated community,” he said.

The Champlins moved to the north Georgia mountains from Gwinnett County. What they’ve found in Old Toccoa Farm is peace and quiet, golf courses, the Toccoa River, wooded trails and “the friendliness of everyone we come across,” said Kim. Continued on page 22

HealiUm Center brings community together

By Isadora Pennington “The word HealiUm has a big red U, what do you think that symbolizes?” Jim Peera asked. “It signifies you; today is your day.

It’s your day to be you.”

Peera is the director and artist behind the local art collective HealiUm Center in Candler Park. He runs the organization with the help of his wife Donna, their children Haseena and Iman, and a team of dedicated volunteers.

Originally from Tanzania in East Africa, Peera and his family fled during the Uganda-Tanzania War to France, where they lived as refugees before eventually moving to England. After his father’s death, Peera’s brother in America suggested that he relocate there to complete high school. He later attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and it was there that he met Donna, who was attending The University of Arizona.

“I was a designer, so she was my model,” he explained. “We traveled together, and we’ve been halfway around the world together as a couple.”

After growing tired of living in California, they moved across the country to Atlanta to escape the fog and crowd. “Little did we know…” he trailed off with a chuckle. In the 25 years that followed, they have built a family and a community here in the city.

Peera’s appreciation for America and the city is what led him to come up with the HealiUm Center concept. “It’s for the community, that’s what it is for,” he said. “I’ve been in America for about 40 years now, so the

idea comes to me at a time when things are falling apart and for me it was – how do I contribute to a country that has done so much for me and opened their hearts? How can I pay them back? How can I pay it forward?

“I felt that there was a disconnect in America,” Peera continued.

“People were spending a lot of effort and time with their kids, but the adults were being left out. The parents were taking care of kids, making sure they went to art classes in school, but the parents fell short.”

He noticed that most adults could only really let loose at bars or sporting events, and not a lot of spaces were dedicated to creativity for people of all ages.

“There needs to be a place where people can come out and express themselves freely, because at the end of the day, we are all creative beings, you know.”

The HealiUm Center features an art gallery, art studio, photo studio, event room, Zen room, music and performance space, and a sanctuary.

While it may look unassuming on the outside, to step inside is to be transported to another world. Colorful artwork of all types adorns the walls, rows of tables with easels await the next art class, and local musicians play in the basement of the church. The walls are painted bright colors with a specific correlation to colors of the chakra that infuse the different spaces with varying energies.

For just $15, visitors can partake in weekly Open Studio sessions that occur in the evenings. There’s a fully equipped stage for musicians and the fee covers art supplies such as canvases, paints and brushes. Volunteers can also work in exchange for access to the

One of the current, on-going events is the Art of the Heal, a campaign to send over 100,000 pieces of art to the White House by July 4. Inspired by the actions of and controversy surrounding the current administration, Peera intends to provide a creative outlet for coping with the unstable political landscape.

“The idea was to kind of get people to come together and really explore the fact that we all have a lot more in common than what is different,” he said. “There’s a lot more commonality within this society and the people than the guy at the top wants us to believe.”

While the Art of the Heal project hopes to bring artwork to the attention of politicians on a national level, the HealiUm center continues to provide affordable and accessible creative opportunities to their growing community of artists in Atlanta. “A lot of the kids, they call us mom and dad, it’s like their home here,” he laughed. “This is their creative home, they come and share their stories with us, so we have built this cool extended family of artists.”

Bicycling changed Sue Nagel’s life.

She was riding with a group one day in 1987 when a fellow cyclist — “a really cute guy” — pulled up alongside her and remarked approvingly, “Nice bike.” Momentarily caught off guard, she smiled and returned the compliment: “You have a nice bike, too.”

Three years later, Sue and Bob Neurath tied the matrimonial knot. The Tucker residents have been married — and riding bicycles together — for the 27 years ever since.
