COVER STORY By Donna Williams Lewis A recent morning at the Decatur Recreation Center brought the “Cheers” refrain to mind — “You want to be where everybody knows your name.” One by one that day, regulars in the city’s Active Living 50+ Walk group showed up for their weekly Wednesday 9 a.m. journey, eliciting excited greetings from those already there. Some of them have been walking with the group since it started, about five years ago. P. Young was a first-timer. “I’m getting started for an exercise program and for the camaraderie,” Young said. She had come to the right place. Within minutes, Young was absorbed into the fold as the walkers departed Sycamore Street and chatted their way through leafy, side-walked neighborhoods. The group was led by Cheryl Burnette, assistant director of Decatur Active Living. She was subbing for Sara Holmes, the department’s adult program supervisor, who normally leads

the 2.5- to 3-mile walks. “Walking is great exercise. It’s low impact, and helps us live longer, in a healthy way,” Burnette said. “I think another really important part of it is the socialization. A lot of the ladies that come from my building are very social … but I think

people sometimes need a little motivation to get out of their homes.” One motivator, she said, can be knowing that people are looking for you to show up. The lone man on the walk that day, Clay Scarborough, would agree. He said he believes an activity done with a group helps

to make it become a habit. “I think if there’s a group and they sort of expect you, it makes it become part of a routine. And I think as you get older you just sort of want to get into those healthy routines,” he said, as he walked along Forkner Drive. The recent retiree and former owner of Decatur’s Fleet Feet store has been doing the 50+ Walk for several years, filling in as a walk leader when needed. “The group helps you socialize, because usually I’m at home by myself during the day. My wife is still working,” Scarborough said. “I live in a condominium so it’s nice also just to get out and walk around and see people’s plants and yards.” One of the more popular routes he’s led passes by a home near Agnes Scott College that has a large chicken coop. “That’s sort of like the highlight of that walk, seeing the chickens,” he said.

Walking the walk

This group moves along at a steady pace, but it’s ok to stop and admire the views, as did longtime members Fran Millians and Ellen Hopkins, who were captivated by some gorgeous blooms along the way. Hopkins, who teaches an online graduate course, joined the group about a year ago when she moved to Decatur from New York. She appreciates the exercise and meeting people but also likes the routine the walk and other Active Living programs bring to her life. “I’m a scheduled person … and just the thought of being retired scared me to death,” she said. “I think there are too many older citizens who are confined to their space, whatever that may be, and don’t reach out and don’t connect meaningfully with other people, but it’s really important to get yourself out there, especially if you’re in a new community.” Millians, a part-time school clerical worker, did just that, joining the walk group when she moved to Decatur five years ago. She said she also does at least a Continued on page 6

30-minute workout every day in her apartment and wants to do all she can to stay active. “As long as I live, the hope is to live well and feel well and not be miserable and wretched. … I just think activity is the key to living well, whatever stage of life you’re in,” Millians said. Tillie Young joined the walking group about four years ago, after moving to Decatur from Maryland. She volunteers at Global Village Project, a school for refugee girls at Decatur Presbyterian Church. “It keeps me active,” said Young, of the walking group. “It’s a nice diverse group — men, women. Mostly women, as many things are here. And Decatur is racially diverse as well. So it’s just nice to live in a naturally diverse community.” She wants potential new walkers to know that the recreation center is just across the street from the Decatur

‘Just a blessing’

Decatur’s group started as a Walk with a Doc group and later joined the network of about a dozen 50+ Walk groups formed several years ago by PEDS, an Atlanta advocacy group for pedestrian safety. Those groups were designed to become selfsustaining and are no longer led by PEDS, according to Sally Flocks, the nonprofit’s president and CEO. “Walking has terrific health and community benefits, and we’re thrilled by the continued success of groups we worked with,” Flocks said. “Walking groups are a terrific way to make friends, have fun, be active and stay healthy.” Decatur’s 50+ walk is free and you don’t have to live in Decatur or be 50+ to walk with the group. The group uses the rec center’s indoor track in inclement weather and each walk typically draws about eight to 15 people, Burnette said. Retired elementary school teacher Sandy Bass is among the regulars. She moved two years ago from a farm in Alabama to a Decatur condo with her husband who was being treated for advanced stage 4 cancer. She said the walk group has been a great way to get to know Decatur, and that the weekly trek has been “just a blessing” since her husband passed away in December. “We meet people from all over the area and the walking is wonderful,” Bass said. The Rev. Marti Keller, one of the group’s original walkers, can’t participate as often as she used to because she’s serving as a minister in Alabama this year. But she shows up for the 50+ Walk when she can. She doesn’t need to do it for the exercise because she and her husband, Richard Cohen, who is the head of Decatur’s pedestrian safety committee, get plenty of walking in with their three dogs.

“I do it because it’s a way for me to see people on a consistent basis and feel part of this community,” Keller said, as the group headed back to the recreation center. “My husband and I still live in a single-family home in a neighborhood that has more young families now and so it’s harder for us to feel as connected as we once did.” The walk group is communitybuilding, she said. “We don’t know the ways in which aging boomers are going to continue to feel connected and vital, and I don’t think it’s going to be the conventional freestanding senior centers,” Keller said. “So these kinds of activities, where we’re walking and talking and connecting with each other and maybe we’ll go out to coffee … this is one way of finding an activity that’s going to suit us better.” The newly designed walking map features six routes around Decatur. Living in an urban setting in the Southeast can include traffic, noise and chaos. This stress might not feel chronic, but city dwellers have a 40 percent higher risk of mood disorders and a 20 percent higher risk of anxiety disorders when compared to people living in rural areas. A 2015 study conducted by Kristen Sumpter Stanford University researchers is the Family and Con(headed by Gregory Bratman) sumer Sciences Agent for found that when participants the University of Georgia walked for 90 minutes in a Cooperative Extension in natural area, as opposed to people Fulton County. She provides programming on food who walked in an urban setting safety, health and nutrition, with traffic, there was decreased financial literacy and the activity in a region of the brain home. associated with depression. Another study, also by Bratman in 2015, further found that a walk in nature, when compared to an urban walk, resulted in less anxiety and increased working memory. Luckily, the city of Atlanta is known as a “city in a forest” due to its abundance of trees. State parks and the Blue Ridge Mountains are just a short drive away. While our city can provide ample places to explore the outdoors, it’s important to remember temperatures will be soaring in the 90s this

summer, with a heat index easily in the double digits. To fully prepare for your outdoor adventures, follow these simple steps, from Mississippi State University Extension, to be safe in the heat: ■ Explore nature in the early morning or late evening. This not only brings cooler temperatures, but lower levels of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. ■ Wear sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 and water resistant. Additionally, it’s best to also wear a hat with a three-inch brim and sunglasses. ■ Drink plenty of water before, during and after your hike. ■ Take it slow to avoid injury. High temperatures and changing elevations can be tiring on the body, so commit to a shorter and easier trail at first. Do you think you would be able to commit to a walk in nature this summer? If so, grab a bottle of water and some sunscreen and explore Georgia’s beautiful nature paths!

FOOD

Icy Treats to Beat the Heat By Mark Woolsey Summer heat in Atlanta leaving you feel like wilted lettuce? Inside of the mouth tasting like the Sahara? Relief is in sight. For a few George Washingtons, you can beat the heat with thrills, chills and spills. A growing number of specialty and gourmet ice pop (think Popsicle) makers in Atlanta are crafting treats that thrill the taste buds and put a momentary chill on July’s steamy heat. A great leap beyond the frozen-flavored-water-on-a-stick creations you remember from childhood, these are made with fresh fruits and creams, locally sourced herbs and spices and natural sweetening. Avocado, anyone? Maybe a tequila pop? Seems like if your taste buds can dream it up, these folks can satisfy.

King of Pops Ponce City Market, 675 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta. Also available in markets, bars and from pushcarts. Info: kingofpops.com. Three brothers inspired by Latin American-style fresh fruit pops decided to start a company selling the frozen treats after jettisoning corporate America. Their counter at Ponce City Market is cluttered, a little quirky and well patronized. Raspberry Lime: Made with fresh raspberries and fresh limes, this delightful treat leaps out and seizes your taste buds with its berry

deliciousness. The underlying lime is a more subtle accent. For a creamy side treat, try the divine chocolate sea salt. The owners say most of their pops have between three and five ingredients. Price $3.

MokiPops No physical location yet, but you can catch them at various events around town. Info: mokipops.com. They stress fresh, local and vegan. The company was begun by three kid siblings after their mother challenged them to start a business instead of spending their summer tethered to electronic devices. One of the three has created more than half of their seasonally-oriented flavors. Hibiscus Strawberry: It’s very fruity with an extra tang that’s slightly sour and it has sort of a cinnamon taste on the back end — a great blend. My spouse said, “I’ve never tasted anything quite like it.” It’s made with fresh-harvested hibiscus, whole strawberries, fresh-squeezed lemon, ginger root, natural cane sugar, xanthan gum and salt. The basil lemonade also plays fruit and spice off against each other; it’s their top seller. Price $3.

Steel City Pops 312 Church Street, Decatur. Info: steelcitypops.com. The family-owned business originated in Birmingham, hence the “Steel City” moniker. The owners also drew inspiration from Mexican-style paletas. Their Decatur shop has a sleek post-modern feel, with their production facility next door, viewable through glass. It’s a craftbrewery spot feel for hand-crafted pops. Coffee: It’s like a coffee ice cream, dreamy and creamy. The coffee taste predominates, but doesn’t overwhelm. If only the coffee in the break room tasted like this. Ingredients include brewed local espresso, cream, water, organic cane sugar and Turkish ground local coffee. Price $3.59.

Tequila: Maybe they should have named this one “Margarita.” It has that sweet, tangy edge, but a paler flavor than what you’ll find at, say, a TexMex Restaurant. The coconut pop is great as well; it’s so loaded with fresh coconut that it has a meaty consistency. You’ll find candy sprinkles at the bottom of many of the pops — a nice touch. Price $2.

11 Places to Learn About Women’s History By JoAnn Bell, Senior Vice President, Program Development, Road Scholar If you want to learn the whole history, you’ve also got to learn the “herstory.” Celebrate women’s historical and modern contributions to art, literature, politics and more all year round by planning a trip to one of these museums and historic sites honoring women in the U.S. and beyond.

1 Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site Hyde Park, New York Eleanor Roosevelt is one of the most influential American First Ladies and, perhaps, one of the most famous women in American history. Visit Val-Kill, her personal retreat and the first National Historic Site devoted to a First Lady, to learn about her life and accomplishments. You can also learn about this famous First Lady during “Tea with Eleanor” at Roosevelt Campobello International Park in New Brunswick, Canada, the Roosevelts’ summer retreat.

2 The Rosa Parks Museum Montgomery, Alabama Learn about Rosa Parks, “The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement,” at the Rosa Parks Museum at Troy University, where interactive exhibits tell the story of Rosa Parks, the Montgomery bus boycott and its role in the civil rights movement. And there’s lots more to learn along the Civil Rights Trail.

3 Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Santa Fe, New Mexico A trip to Santa Fe would not be complete without a docent-led visit to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. The museum holds the largest collection of the works of Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the most significant artists and feminists of the 20th century. While you’re in the neighborhood, take a field trip to The Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center in Abiquiu — just an hour drive from Santa Fe — to explore Georgia’s home and studio and take in the stunning Southwest landscapes that inspired her.

4 Althorp Estate Northampton, England Althorp House, where Princess Diana’s brother Charles resides, has been home to the Spencer family for over 500 years. Visit the 13,000-acre estate in the English countryside to see Diana’s childhood bedroom and learn about her life as a girl. Visit with Road Scholar to walk through the estate with Diana’s security guard, Ken Wharfe. If you’re visiting Althorp, you’ll likely be

flying into and spending some time in London. If so, be sure to stop at Kensington Palace to see some of Princess Diana’s most famous outfits and to learn about another fierce British leader, Queen Victoria.

5 Intentional Growth Center Lake Junaluska, North Carolina Join scholars and intellectuals at beautiful Lake Junaluska in the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina to learn about local women’s history. Delve into the achievements of Appalachian women during daily lectures, and find out about the matriarchal customs of the local Cherokee tribe.

6 The Jane Austen Centre Bath, England Study the life and legacy of world-renowned British author Jane Austen as you visit her hometown of Bath. It is said that Jane was unhappy during her time in Bath and did not do much writing here. But her social life in Bath served as inspiration for much of her future works. Visit the Jane Austen Centre to learn about the impact that the city had on her and see a life-size wax model of the author.

7 Women’s Rights National Historic Park Seneca Falls, New York This 6.8-acre park was established in 1989 to commemorate the work done in this area during the women’s suffrage movement. Visit the Wesleyan Chapel, the site of the first women’s rights convention, and explore Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s house to learn about Elizabeth and other early women’s rights activists. Road Scholars will also learn about links between the Iroquois Clan Mothers and the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848.

8 The Frida Kahlo Museum Mexico City, Mexico Frida Kahlo de Rivera’s fame extends far beyond her home country of Mexico, and her self-portraits made her one of the most-recognized artists of all time. Take a trip down to Mexico City to explore the life and portraits of this renowned artist and celebrated feminist at Casa Azul, the Frida Kahlo Museum.

Some things to know about vaccines and food

The Georgia Department of Public Health advises travelers to learn what vaccines or preventatives are required before traveling, and to do so well ahead of the planned trip. The CDC reminds everyone that the flu occurs year-round in the Caribbean — and April through September in the Southern Hemisphere. Other threats to avoid when heading for international destinations include malaria, typhoid, hepatitis A and B, yellow fever and rabies, according to the DeKalb County’s Board of Health website. The Mayo Clinic suggests one of the first stops before overseas travel should be a visit with a “travel medicine specialist.” Of course, Mayo travel clinic physicians and nurses are located in Minnesota, Florida and Arizona. Fortunately, Atlantans also have many excellent travel specialists, including Dr.

needed. In addition to planning ahead for vaccines, Oladele reminded all international travelers to take precautions once they arrive. “Boil it, cook it, peel it — or don’t eat it. That’s where we get into trouble,” said Oladele. “Even if the food is safe, some travelers will still ask for an ice cube, and that can be the beginning of a multitude of problems.” According to the CDC, it is best to avoid ice in developing countries, as there is no way to know if it was made with safe tap water. Travelers might believe the vaccines they received will keep them safe from food illnesses. “That’s not necessarily so,” Oladele said. “Not all enteric diseases [those relating to or affecting the intestines] have preventive vaccines,” he said. “A few do, but certainly not all.”

Many people turn to Rick Steves’ publications for travel information and advice. Headquartered in Washington State, the company produces guidebooks, television and radio shows and a wide variety of travel-related information. When it comes to travel insurance, Steves says, “For

some travelers, insurance is a good deal; for others, it’s not.” In his review, he reminds older adults that “Age is one of the biggest factors affecting the price. Rates go up dramatically for every decade over 50, while coverage is generally inexpensive, or even free, for children 17 and under.” Steves also says travel agents may receive commissions when buying insurance for their clients. Therefore, it’s important to direct your “specific [insurance] questions to the insurance provider” — not the travel agent. The AARP suggests that if you’re spending thousands of dollars for unique tours, you should consider trip cancellation insurance to protect yourself in case you need to cancel. Another reliable source for travel insurance information is the Better Business Bureau. Suggestions from their website,

bbb.org, include: Review what you already have. If you used a travel agency or a cruise line, it’s possible that insurance is part of your purchased package. ■ Look at your credit card companies. Perhaps your credit card includes certain insurance packages if you’re using that card to pay for the trip. ■ Know exactly what is covered and what is not covered. ■ Understand whether the insurance covers: trip cancellation or delay, lost or stolen luggage, emergency medical assistance and cost of rental cars. Most should and many do. ■ Learn the difference between ‘trip cancellation insurance’ and a ‘cancellation waiver.’ Although waivers do ■

provide some trip cancellation protection, they generally include more restrictions. Travel insurance policies can

be confusing and complicated. The best advice from seasoned experts is to do your homework before you buy.

Coming home through customs Be patient with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. They work hard to keep Americans safe when returning home from travel abroad and they intercept everything from dangerous drugs to agricultural products that may be carrying pests and diseases. “While a relatively small number of harmful pests are found among the millions of stems inspected by CBP, a single dangerous pest could cause millions of dollars of damage to our nation’s crops,” according to the department. Last October, a trained detector dog named Hardy sniffed out a roasted pig head in a traveler’s baggage at Atlanta’s HartsfieldJackson International Airport. The incident made national news. In that case, the U.S. Department of Agriculture was protecting the public against African swine fever, a deadly disease that could cause major damage to the American pork industry. PERSONAL SAFETY

The Top 10 Financial Frauds to Avoid

STAY SAFE

Steve Rose is a retired Sandy Springs Police Captain, veteran Fulton County police officer and freelance writer. He is the author the book “Why Do My Mystic Journeys Always Lead to the Waffle House?” and the column “View from a Cop.”

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) recently published a Top 10 financial frauds list —— something that should not surprise anyone who gives any attention to his or her investments, retirement accounts and other income sources after leaving the workforce. The perception is that older adults have a good nest egg in their accounts and therefore, they become targets. Unfortunately, strangers are not the majority of perpetrators of elder abuse, including financial fraud, that is directed towards seniors. Most perpetrators are family, adult children, grandchildren and so on.

2. Counterfeit Prescription Drugs. This one can be dangerous

since many are available online. Besides paying for something that won’t help their illness, the victims could be taking something detrimental to their condition.

3. Funeral and Cemetery Scams. This can involve someone

showing up during the funeral or viewing, claiming the deceased owed a debt; or a funeral director may claim the only cremation casket you may use is the most expensive. (Remember, cardboard will burn!) Don’t sign off on everything until you do your research — even in emotionally traumatic times.

4. Fraudulent Anti-Aging Products. We all want to look as young

as I do! Mother Nature takes her course regardless of what you do. Fake Botox is a thing these days, so know what you are putting on and in yourself!

Top 10 List 1. Medicare/Health Insurance Scams —

Listen to podcasts on personal safety with steve rose atlantaseniorlife.com

no surprise. There’s a lot of waste in this area, much of it contributed to fraud committed by using a senior’s information to bill Medicare for items and services that are not necessary, and sometimes never received. At times, unscrupulous doctors have been prosecuted for receiving kickbacks after signing off on services or medical equipment. Crooks may pose as Medicare representatives to obtain personal information.

5. Telemarketing and Phone Fraud. Here are your key

words for this one: Hang up. Yep, that’s it. Unfortunately, there are telemarketers who deliver smooth conversation to a lonely senior who may get some level of comfort from someone to talk on the phone. Don’t fall for investment or charity pitches over the phone. Nothing involving your money should ever be decided quickly over the phone. Take time and research.

6. Internet Fraud.

Talk about a wide scope of fraud. It could be anything involving access of your personal information online. Don’t buy expensive pop-up or anti-virus programs online without consulting a computer professional. Don’t assume e-mails with fancy logos are legit. These can be scams. Again, take time and verify with someone else. Another opinion is always a good move.

7. Investments.

9.Sweepstakes and Lottery Scams-Ignore them. Unless

Ed McMahon rises from the grave and appears with your Publishers Clearing House check, your best course is to discard random lottery-winning junk mail. I have won the Spanish Lottery, not once, but twice! Over one hundred million dollars! I keep asking for the check, but they’re taking their time about it.

10. Grandparent Scam.

I’ve talked about this one until I’m blue in the face. Checklist: If your grandson calls to say he’s in another country or even state, in trouble and does not want mom and dad to know, then this will be your screaming clue to call mom and dad — because it’s a fake. Don’t forget: all of you made it this point in your lives because of your common sense and good judgement…except for me. I just got lucky. Don’t lose those qualities. Remember, you never get something for nothing!

Hopefully, you have a financial advisor looking after your money and retirement. Don’t fall for quick-money returns. Remember, that ambassador in some faraway country, the one willing to give you a few million for allowing him to use your bank account, does not exist. It is some schmuck in an internet café trying to swindle you. Go with what got you to your retirement point — solid decisions backed by financial advice from a professional.

8. Homeowner/Reverse Mortgage. That equity is

your reward for your home’s investment and property value. It is also a goal for fraudsters to take it from you. The National Council on Aging pointed out a tax scam in California where fake letters, supposedly from the county assessor’s office, were sent to homeowners offering a reassessment of the property value and tax status. This, of course, involved a fee. Beware of opportunities targeting your equity. This includes reversemortgage solicitations. Like always, take time, ask questions and research.
