Alabama Shakespeare Festival Delivers Energy and Justice this Spring

Alabama Shakespeare Festival blasts to the past this spring with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley in Million Dollar Quartet. On December 4, 1956, an extraordinary twist of fate brought those four future legends together at Sam Phillips’ Sun Records in Memphis for one of the greatest jam sessions ever.

World-class actors and musicians will take over the Festival Stage with an electrifying score of rock and roll, gospel, R&B, rockabilly, and country songs. Get ready to tap your toes to your favorite jukebox hits, including “Walk the Line,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Hound Dog,” and many more. Million Dollar Quartet is recommended for ages 13 and up, making it a captivating show for the young and young at heart.

In May, ASF will produce Lynn Nottage’s Tony-nominated Broadway play, Clyde’s. Creating the perfect sandwich is the shared quest of the formerly incarcerated kitchen staff of Clyde’s, a truck stop cafe. While the restaurant’s mischievous owner tries to keep them under her thumb, her employees find a purpose and permission to dream, discovering that “sometimes a hero is more than a sandwich.”

Clyde’s is full of laughs and insights into what it means to find and stumble down your path in life. ASF is producing it in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) and Arkansas Repertory Theatre.

EJI founder and Executive Director Bryan Stevenson will speak at the ASF Insights for Clyde’s on May 13 at 12:30 p.m. Please note that this play contains strong language and mature themes, so it is recommended for ages 17 and up.
