FLYING BY THE SEAT OF HIS PANTS TONY PACE CAN DO IT ALL ONSTAGE — SO HECK , WHY NOT WING IT ?

T

ony Pace never quite pictured himself in the same

league as elite NFL quarterbacks like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Yet the versatile, do-it-all entertainer has something in common with two of the best signal-callers in professional football. Each has become particularly adept at looking over the defense (or audience) as he approaches the line of scrimmage (or the stage) and then adjusts the play (or show) accordingly. It’s called an “audible, and — in show-biz — few do it better than Pace, who just might be the most talented entertainer you’ve never heard of. In an era where artists tend to zero in on one particular style of entertainment and then hyper-focus on become highly skilled in that one area, Pace is a refreshing throwback. He can sing, tell jokes, do killer impressions and play just about every instrument in a band. Best of all, beyond his opening and closing numbers,

Pace doesn’t have a clue when he hits the stage what type of show he’s going to perform. Which pretty makes his production manager, Chris Bachand, the hidden secret behind Pace’s success. “There have been times when I’ve written out a set list, Pace explained recently, “and [he] looks at the first tune and looks at the last tune and then crumbles up the paper and throws it behind him. And I say, ‘What are you doing?’ And he says, ‘Yeah, right, after the first tune, you’re gonna go somewhere else.’ That’s where the football analogy comes into play. Pace, who’s been entertaining audiences for 30 years, bases his entire show on a series of spoken audio cues to Bachand, who’s got all of Pace’s material stored electronically and can access it instantaneously. Owing to the economics of the business, it isn’t cost-effective for Pace to work with a live band unless the venue is footing the bill for the musicians.

on the word business. “The more you know about everything, the more well-rounded you are, the better it is for you to understand what you’re doing on stage.” Same goes for his agent background. “When I walk into a venue, I understand a little better than others what the venue is looking for and how I would deal with the clients,” he said. “There’s a whole different perspective, and it’s been so helpful along the way over the years.” Of course, when all else fails, Pace always has his go-to piece: he’ll strap on his accordion and give the audience a healthy dose of “Lady of Spain.” Pace just might be the only professional entertainer in the world who admits he started out as a musician on the accordion and isn’t afraid to use it today. “I didn’t do it last time I was in Atlantic City (in September), so maybe we’ll break it out this time,” the former wedding band singer said with a laugh. Turns out the squeeze box, just like everything else in his career, was a stepping stone. He’s also mastered the guitar, piano and trumpet, an instrument that comes in handy when he’s doing his Louis Armstrong impression. Pace loves seeing the expressions on the faces of the audience when he picks up an instrument and plays. It reminds him that he’s following in some very famous footsteps. “I guess I’m just old school like the Sammy Davis Jrs. and Wayne Newtons of the world,” he said, invoking the names of entertainers who used a broad range of skills to entertain audiences. More often than not, Pace has to rely on pre-recorded tracks, which is why Bachand is perhaps the key and unseen link in the show. “Depending on … the demographics of the audience, I figure out what kind of a show they’re looking for and we run it from there,” said Pace, who parlayed a three-day gig at Resorts a decade ago into a nine-month run, and has returned to play Resorts and the former Atlantic City Hilton on multiple occasions. Pace returns to Resorts for shows Sunday through Tuesday. If Pace senses it’s a musical crowd, he’ll keep the comedy and impressions to a minimum. If he thinks they’re the type of audience that’s in it for the laughs, he has a comedy arsenal from which to choose, including some spot-on impressions. Having the ability to move easily between entertainment styles not only keeps the show fresh for the audience — especially if they’re repeat customers, which casinos tend to draw — but also for Pace. “It’s a lot of fun for me, too, because it never gets stale, it never gets old,” he said. “I’ve always got to think about what’s going on and it’s exciting just to see where things are going to go.” Pace has another secret weapon that he isn’t afraid to use. In addition to three decades of experience as an entertainer, he’s also held just about every job in the business behind the scenes as a stage hand, lighting director, sound engineer, voice-over talent and a producer and director who’s also worked in the recording industry. He also has experience as an agent who’s booked shows into a variety of venues, which is something he uses to enhance his shows. “Something that I stress, especially to young people, is that this is the music business,” he said — emphasis

he Richard Stockton College’s School of Arts and Humanities will host the inaugural concert of its newly named jazz orchestra-in-residence on Wednesday, Oct. 22. The Ed Vezinho/Jim Ward Big Band (pictured) — a 16-piece jazz ensemble formed over 30 years ago and comprised of some of Atlantic City’s finest musicians — will play Stockton’s Campus Center Theater starting 7:30pm. General admission tickets are $10. This is the first of several concerts the college intends to host by the band. “We are very excited about our upcoming performances at Stockton, and hope to inspire listeners to pursue their musical dreams by taking advantage of the fantastic opportunities being offered by the new Stockton music program, says Vezinho, whose original scores and arrangements will highlight the inaugural show. It will also include a special appearance by Dr. Michael Pedicin, an accomplished tenor saxophonist, recording artist and coordinator of jazz studies at Stockton. “Both Ed and Jim are first-rate musicians, says Pedicin. “We’re very lucky to include them as our own. The Vezinho/Ward Big Band was established in 1982 and has released three CDs that have been highly acclaimed in jazz circles.

The show will take place on the very site where Tony Mart’s was once located, 939 Bay Avenue (now called The Tides at 939) in Somers Point. Featured will be music from the movie Eddie and the Cruisers, which was filmed at Tony Mart’s in 1982, and Levon and the Hawks — a group discovered by Bob Dylan at Tony Mart’s in 1965 that later morphed into The Band. he refrain in Joni Michell’s hit song “Big Yellow Taxi” goes “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.” That dates back to 1970, but the essence of those lyrics still applies today. Many of the most successful entities in Atlantic City’s recent history are themed around nostalgia or wistful yearnings. Prime cases-in-point are Boogie Nights retro nightclub at Tropicana, and Fakefest weekend on The Deck at Golden Nugget each summer — both hugely popular flashbacks to time gone by. Another is the Sixties Rock Experience, which sold out two performances at The Showroom at Golden Nugget in its A.C. debut in March. The two-hour show was created by Gary Weinlein, who also plays the role of Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson. About a dozen iconic ‘60s rockers are recreated (in appearance as much as voice), among them Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, Carlos Santana, Linda Ronstadt, Grace Slick, Dusty Springfield, Jim Morrison, Felix Cavaliere of the Rascals, and Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues. The show captures the essence of the individual stars — more so than the bands they fronted, though the backing musicians Weinlein’s tapped are also sensational. “We try to replicate songs note for note and have people hear the music of that era as they’d have heard it when they were driving in their cars playing the radio, or listening to their eight-track player if they had one of those,” Weinlein told AC Weekly. “That’s the duplication we strive for—not from a live album or a song with extended guitar solos or jam sessions. We want them to identify with the same sounds they could identify with back then.” More info: sixtiesrockexperience.com NÊ

others are free but request a donation. During the Challenge, children 11 and under can climb free with an adult. These beacons have played an important role in New Jersey’s history, guarding mariners and protecting the New Jersey coastal regions for three centuries. In Atlantic City the Absecon Lighthouse likely helped bootleggers bringing booze via the sea to the town during the height of Prohibition, the era that has been so beautifully brought to life in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. When you climb to the top of these lighthouses, it is easy to imagine those earlier times when lighthouses were vital to the safety of ships coming to port at the various lighthouse towns along the eastern shore of New Jersey and those on the Delaware Bay side of the state. Participants can begin the Challenge at any of the 11 participating New Jersey land-based lighthouses, one museum and two life-saving stations, and purchase a souvenir ($1), which will be proof of your visit at each lighthouse and commemorate your participation in the event. You can also find the Lighthouse Challenge of NJ on Facebook.) ÊN

re you up for a challenge that includes fascinating history about maritime New Jersey and an aerobic challenge up multiple winding staircases? This Saturday and Sunday, October 1819, offers those with both historical curiosity and strong legs the opportunity to climb into history during the annual Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey. Lighthouses and selected museums throughout the state host the Lighthouse Challenge. Take the challenge, tour the state and visit each participating lighthouse over the weekend to help raise funds for continued lighthouse preservation. The Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City is the state’s tallest lighthouse at 171 feet and has 228 steps. According to Jean Muchanic, executive director of the Absecon Lighthouse, “the people who take the Lighthouse Challenge, their goal is to visit all 11 lighthouses and Atlantic City is a great destination because there are a lot of food choices and overnight accommodations and we are right in the middle of the tour. We are also one of a handful of lighthouses that are open for a night climb. A lot of people finish off their day in Atlantic City. It is our biggest event of the year. We are only open a few times at night so this is one of the rare opportunities to see the Atlantic City skyline at night with a 360 degree view and it’s breathtaking.” She also notes that the climb attracts people from across the country. “We have a group from Kansas every year.” The other participating lighthouses and museums are the following: Barnegat Lighthouse, Barnegat Lighthouse Historical Museum, Cape May Lighthouse, East Point Light, Finns Point Light, Hereford Inlet Light (and Delaware Bay Lights Virtual Tour), Sandy Hook Lighthouse (the oldest standing lighthouse, first lit in 1774), Navesink/Twin Lights, Sea Girt Lighthouse, Tatham Life Saving Station 35, Tinicum Light, Tucker’s Island Light at Tuckerton Seaport Museum and U.S. Life Saving Station 30, Ocean City. Night climbs will be offered at Absecon, Cape May, Tinicum and Tucker’s Island Light at Tuckerton Seaport from 6-8pm on Saturday. Some of the lighthouses charge a modest fee to climb ($7; $5 seniors, $4 children 4-12 at Absecon Lighthouse) while

istory and Atlantic City go together like peanut butter and jelly. Terence Winter, the producer behind Boardwalk Empire, marveled over that fact when he came to town four years ago to introduce locals to his thennew show at a Caesars screening. “So much has happened in Atlantic City,” Winter said, citing not just Prohibition during the 1920s but “Frank Sinatra during the ‘50s, the casinos during the ‘70s — it’s a town of history.” Well, here’s another historical landmark to add to the list: The Atlantic City Marathon is the third longest continuing marathon in the nation. The race, which is slated for Sunday, Oct. 19, turns 56 years old this year. “The great thing is that it gets bigger and bigger every year,” event director Genia Bittner says. Over 3,500 runners were part of the race last year, and Bittner is confident that this weekend will see still more participants hoofing it across the island: “We’re encouraged by the continued growth.” Part of what makes the A.C. marathon special is that it’s a unique course, due to the details of local geography. “To

run a 26.2-mile race on an island that’s 10 miles long can be tricky,” Bittner says. “But we use every bit of land that we can. The good thing is that, now, the course hits the marina — for the last three years, we’ve been able to use the Brigantine tunnel, and that made things easier. It’s been great utilizing another part of Atlantic City; before that, we were running up and down the Boardwalk and hitting the streets of Margate and Longport.” Bittner has been busy striving to make this the most festive of marathons. A robust entertainment lineup is set to feature five live bands performing at various points along the course, throughout the race. Local America’s Got Talent finalist Mara Justine will kick everything off with her rendition of the national anthem. “It’ll be fun for those in the race,” she notes, “as well as the spectators, including kids.” The marathon, co-sponsored by AC Weekly among others, will commence 8am Sunday in front of Bally’s casino at Boardwalk and Michigan Avenue. Top finishers will receive awards at 11am, and age-group winners will be honored at noon.

The race’s shorter 5K and 10K courses are walker-friendly, while the marathon proper and the half-marathon have course limitations that will be enforced: The marathon course will be open for six hours, and the half-marathon course will be open for three and a half hours. Those time limits will begin when the last person crosses the starting line, and runners must be prepared to complete the events during the time allotted. Bittner hopes to continue building on the event so that next year’s marathon will be even bigger. “I would love it if more people would make a big weekend out of it,” she says, “and come in Friday and stay until Monday. It’s a great event for Atlantic City at a great time of year.” ■

irasole, Atlantic City’s Pacific Avenue-fronting jewel, is equal parts earnest Italian dining experience combined with glamorous Mediterranean-tinged dĂŠcor and ambiance. Considering that founder Gino Iovino’s original calling was in the world of high-end Italian fashion, this only seems fitting. With multiple seating areas, plus an enclosed patio section popular virtually year round, Girasole offers charming, private sanctuary just steps away from the bustle of midtown. We began our repast with pizza Tirolese — tomatoes, pancetta, arugula and Parmigiano reggiano — all while thoroughly enjoying observing our veteran pie-maker’s studious preparation. Stretching the crust by hand and diligently rotating it frequently in the massive brick oven, her attention to detail became our reward. Crisp, caramelized and firm, this crust is one of few equals we know of locally for nearby Tony’s Baltimore Grill’s legendary creations. GIRASOLE’S INSALATA TROPICALE Insalada tropicale brought a composition worthy of an artist’s palette. A central mound of spring mix surrounded on four sides by thinly sliced apple, mango and avocado plus shocking pink tableside was one of the most enviable culinary feats we’ve witgrapefruit segmented into what chef’s call a “supremeâ€? cut, cleanly nessed of late. The white flesh, removed with slow, cautious strokes removing skin, pith, membranes, and seeds. Hearts of palm lounged of a spoon and butter knife, arrived in thick, solid pieces. Delicious beyond words, ingenious in its simplicity, this regal delight rivaled atop the greens, all happily doused with raspberry vinaigrette. Langoustines, a nightly addition not always available, are truly versions we’ve had in Rome. Another house signature, pollo Girasole, was our second entrĂŠe. one of the ocean’s greatest treasures. Native to European waters, these spiny lobsters look more like colossal shrimp on steroids; their A tight turban of breast meat arrived, centered mid-plate and surflavor profile, infinitely more delicate and mysterious remains wholly rounded by a dice of luminous red and yellow peppers. Stuffed unique in the world of seafood. Gently broiled with just the slightest within the poultry was a pleasant, ivory blend of mozz and parwhisper of oreganata-style breading, Girasole’s technique couldn’t be migiano, serving as both ingredient and a sort of creamy binder. A golden sauce however, was the real star here, elevating ordinary any better, or more authentically Italian, for that matter. From an extensive list of pastas — house-made or imported chicken well beyond typical expectations. All desserts here are made in-house, so we chose the most curious from Italy, your choice — we opted for a sampler of pappardelle and gnocchi. The former, a wide, buttery noodle with plenty of al dente pair — zuccotto and croccantino. Zuccotto, a decadent-looking hazeloomph, was tossed with a generous portion of funghi, including nut ice cream cake, was surprisingly lighter-than-air, a golden sponge porcinis and shiitakes. The gnocchi, tender little bundles of doughy striped with sweet, nutty layers. Croccantino, semi-chilled zabaglione goodness, were lightly sauced with tomato, fresh mozzarella and in dome shape, had been crusted with toasted almonds and dark chocolate chips. Pretty enough for a close-up, this classy custard shredded basil. ‘THE JUDGE’ IS A DRAMA THAT’S WELL ACTED BUT LONGWINDED BY LORI HOFFMAN

ing with some pretty big names taking supporting roles including Vera Farmiga as Hank’s high school sweetheart with a daughter (Leighton Meester) the film teases us might be Hank’s. That Hank makes out with her before her possible paternity comes into question is one of the film’s less engaging sidebars. Vincent D’Onofrio plays Hank’s older brother Glen, whose possible career as a pro baseball player was snuffed out by an automobile accident with you-know-who behind the wheel. There is also the middle brother, the mentally impaired Dale (Jeremy Strong), there to show us his brothers learned patience and the art of facing down bullies out of childhood necessity. Hank is still very good at facing down bullies, which he does in a scene set at a bar that crackles with the energy the rest of the film too often lacks. Dax Shepard (TV’s Parenthood) also shows up as the local attorney whose office is above his antique shop. He is hired

as co-counsel for the defense and his cute bit is that he vomits in fear each time he has to enter the courthouse. And I nearly forgot Billy Bob Thornton as the very skilled prosecutor who relishes his courtroom clash with Hank but is not devoid of compassion for the judge’s circumstances. That is some heavyweight acting firepower and produces several standout moments, but the overall impression with The Judge is a slow-moving drama that feels like a made for TV movie that moved up to big screen status thanks solely to the cast. ■

he Judge is a classic example of a fall movie that is looking for Academy Award attention because that what’s the fall is for, opening the fishing season for Academy Award recognition with serious movies. And, while the performances are solid, the story itself is conventional to a fault and is about 30 minutes too long — at times you feel like you’re watching sap dripping from a tree. Robert Downey, Jr. plays arrogant, big city attorney Hank Palmer, a fast talking wiseass whose line of rat-a-tattat machine gun chatter grinds to a halt temporarily when he gets the news that his mother has died. That is about the only news that would wipe the power attorney smirk off his face as he says goodbye to his adorable daughter and his soon-to-be-ex-wife and heads for his water tower hometown to clash with his estranged father, the judge of the title, played by Robert Duvall. His mother’s death is just about the only reason that would bring Hank back to town. His relationship with his father is beyond toxic, but his plans to return home immediately after the funeral change when the judge is accused of murder. I wish the story and screenplay credited to director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers), Nick Schenk and Bill Dubuque didn’t feel the need to rely so heavily on standard, heavy handed clichés of the genre. It is just too easy to cast Downey, Jr. as the cynical slick talking, skatethrough-life attorney frustrated by his father’s stoic mindset. If Downey found a new angle to approach the role, it might have worked more successfully. Duvall is also being asked to keep within his wheelhouse, as a stern taskmaster hiding his illness from everybody and exploding with anger and fear as that illness takes away his dignity, which is perhaps more important to him than the real possibility he will be convicted. The strongest element of the film is the excellent cast-
