HOBBIT FOR THE HOLIDAYS WHAT IS IT ABOUT TOLKIEN’S TALES THAT MAKES THEM SUCH PERFECT SE A SONAL MOVIES

I

t’s finally here: the end of Peter Jackson’s Middle-Earth. While fans have spent the past couple Decembers cheerily quarreling over whether the director’s three-film adaptation of The Hobbit, transforming a single modestsized novel into a trilogy of overlong movies, was worth all those hours of footage, one thing’s been certain all along: There was never any real chance that The Hobbit could fail to continue The Lord of the Rings’ fundamental identity as Best Holiday Season Movies Ever. But why? What is it that makes Tolkien’s tales so deeply resonant with Christmastime? Like LOTR, much of The Hobbit is fundamentally not about its plot—rather, it’s about the yearning we feel for the comforts of home. That’s perhaps the simplest holiday sentiment there is, one shared by anyone who either had

or wanted a happy childhood. The Shire, the pastoral quasiEnglish countryside that the hobbits call home, is painted early and lovingly in both stories. It’s a fantastical vision of simple, small-town neighborhood bliss: kids playing out front, cheerily painted front doors, gardeners happily trimming hedges. In LOTR, Bilbo Baggins’ family homestead, Bag End, was the story’s first locale; in The Hobbit, it doesn’t merely fill that same role again—it becomes a major character itself. If you’ve recently rewatched the opening chapter, An Unexpected Journey, to get ready for The Battle of Five Armies’ theatrical premiere this week, you’ll recall that its first act unfolds amid a half-hour-long warm-sweater-hug of a portrait of Bilbo’s domestic space, lingering on shots of cozy candlelit nooks, a bountifully stocked pantry, comfy CONTINUED ON PAGE

HELPING THROUGH HOCKEY Spearheaded by Chris Howe of the Brigantine Hockey League and Jerry Ryan of Elephant Talk Indie Music Magazine, a hockey clinic was held Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14, for about 30 special-needs children at Brigantine’s 42nd Street Recreational Complex. The children were instructed on the fundamentals of the game, engaged in scrimmages, were given a tour of a Brigantine Fire Department truck, received free hockey sticks and hats, got a visit from Santa Seal from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, and were treated to pizza during a postscrimmage trophy presentation. The BHL and Elephant Talk plan to make the camp an annual event. Photo: Ray Schweibert

PHANTOMS FOILED AGAIN BY DEVILS For the second time in as many months, the Albany Devils narrowly defeated AHL rivals Lehigh Valley Phantoms at Boardwalk Hall. In the latest fray Dec. 14, the Devils came from behind twice to force overtime. In the extra period Devils’ center Tim Sestito (pictured above) netted the game-winning goal to give Albany a 4-3 win. Albany trailed 2-1 and 3-2 at different points of the third period. Sestito got his second goal 2 minutes, 50 seconds into OT. Photo: thealbanydevils.com.

nthem Lounge at Tropicana has tossed another unique wrinkle into the landscape of Atlantic City nightlife with its Corks ’n’ Canvas concept. Billed as the ultimate twist for a girls night out — or a tempting alternative to the typical date night — Corks ’n’ Canvas has attendees painting their own personal masterpieces under the watchful eye of a professional, while sipping samples of select wines between (or possibly during) strokes of the brush. The debut event was a winner last month, and the encore is happening this Saturday night, Dec. 19, from 8–10:30pm. Anthem co-owner Carrie Kauffman Washington tells us the evening is supervised by an instructor from the South Jersey-based Paint-A-Treasure (paintatreasure. com). “We pick a painting sample in advance and she teaches you how to paint it,” Washington says. Wine is served both while you paint, and during the break: “We serve 1818 (a Chilean vintner) wines in Cabernet, Syrah, Chardonnay and Pinot grigio. We also have DJs who play lounge music during the event.” Anthem’s ambition is to do a Corks ’n’ Canvas event every month, each limited to 25 people. All-inclusive tickets are $45 per person and should be purchased in advance. Afterward there will be complimentary admission to the lounge for all event attendees — who, of course, also get to take home the artwork they create. Anthem is also one of the few area nightspots that will be open both Christmas Eve and Christmas day, at 11pm each night. It’s also bringing back its Carnivale New Year’s Eve bash Dec. 31; see details in our New Year’s Eve party preview guide on page 18. N

STOCKTON BRINGS NEW SMARTS TO A .C . WHEN THE COLLEGE TAKES OVER THE FORMER SHOWBOAT, WHAT COULD THAT ME AN FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT SCENE

T

he operators of Atlantic City’s eight casinos won’t have to worry about competition from the new owner of the former Showboat Atlantic City casino hotel: Caesars Entertainment saw to that by slapping a deed restriction on the 26-acre property before selling it last week to the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. The sales agreement prevents Stockton (or any owner) from operating a casino there for the next 10 years. But the restriction only places limitations on gambling. It doesn’t apply to entertainment—which means there’s nothing stopping Stockton from becoming a player on the Atlantic City nightlife circuit. After all, included in the school’s $18 million cash deal with the casino company is one of Atlantic City’s finest performing venues: the former Music Hall, which Showboat had operated under the House of Blues brand. During a November interview after Stockton and Caesars announced a letter of intent to sell Showboat to the college, the school’s president, Dr. Herman Saatkamp, said he envisioned the showroom becoming an integral part of Stockton’s entertainment portfolio. The school already has a well-equipped 500-seat performing arts center on its main campus in Pomona. When a new campus center opened several years ago, that facility included a more intimate 254-seat theater. But both venues pale in comparison to the Music Hall, which opened in 2005. “We would probably envision many of our programs being there as a performance venue,” Saatkamp said. “It holds … about 2,500 people [and] we don’t have a venue like that.” Stockton’s new Island Campus will be a mixed-use facility, much the same as the Seaview Hotel & Golf Club in Galloway Township, which Stockton purchased in 2010. The former Showboat’s 128,000 square feet of space once used for slot machines, craps tables and the like will be repurposed for academic, administrative and community use. This includes approximately 20 mixeduse classrooms, 10 lecture facilities, music, dance and choral instruction rooms, an experimental theatre and dance studio. One hotel tower of about 450 rooms will continue to be used as a public hotel with an outside operator running the facility for the school. Dolce Resorts, which operates the public part of Seaview for the college, has been named as a possible operator of the Showboat tower. The former casino’s two other hotel towers, with over 850 rooms, would be used for student housing, with the

possibility of using some of the rooms for additional hotel space during the summer, when there’s less of a student demand for rooms. Although Stockton is able to offer a culturally diverse entertainment program with its existing performing arts center and the smaller theater on its main campus, the acquisition of the HOB Music Hall raises the options bar dramatically. Suddenly, acts, shows and programs that were previously considered too big, both physically and financially, for its campus venues would be an easy reach for the school while still keeping tickets at affordable prices, especially for college students. Although Stockton already has a presence in Atlantic City with the Carnegie Library building and the Dante Hall theater, Saatkamp, president of Stockton since 2003, said he tried seven times to establish a larger footprint for the school on Absecon Island. He said it’s only fitting the college return to the Atlantic City Boardwalk; the school was temporarily located in the long-gone Mayflower Hotel in the early 1970s while its Pomona campus was under construction. “The Stockton-Island Campus will help provide area residents with access to a distinctive Stockton education,” he said, “helping them compete in our global society.” Stockton expects to have the hotel portion of the Island Campus operating by late spring 2015, with some summer session classes to follow. Full academic programs are expected to begin in fall 2015. Purchasing Showboat virtually doubles Stockton’s physical plant. Its main campus consists of approximately 1.6 million square feet; the Showboat property is about 1.8 million square feet. Saatkamp said Stockton could help fuel the growth and redevelopment of Atlantic City’s Inlet section. The school president said he’s seen first hand how the expansion of a college can have a positive spinoff effect on the community that surrounds it: “In urban centers across the nation, including Tampa, Indianapolis, Corpus Christi and Pittsburgh, revitalization has bloomed around institutions of higher learning. Businesses, from small entrepreneurs to large companies, are attracted to the opportunities to service college communities, benefit from the research and analysis being done, and tap into the educated workforce.” N

See, Bilbo even dresses in Christmas colors.

All that is why people who love Tolkien, and who mostly respect Jackson’s interpretation thereof, are willing to forgive the excessive-seeming runtime and the alterations to the book’s narrative. Because the ultimate essence of the story isn’t swordfights and magic rings and snarling creatures—it’s the bittersweet longing for things to be always like our fondest memories of them are. Like Christmas. ■

FIVE MORE DECEMBER EPICS: Exodus: Gods and Kings Starring Christian Bale as Moses, Exodus is a decent if unexceptional biblical epic, offering an updated take on the Hebrew people’s egress from Egyptian slavery. In the hands of director Ridley Scott, the iconic parting of the Red Sea becomes a truly unforgettable special-effects spectacular—and yet, except for a few nice moments involving Ben Kingsley as a Hebrew elder, the rest of the cast, including Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver and John Turturro, aren’t really given enough to do to add emotional heft to the story. —LORI HOFFMANN Wild Just in time for awards season, Reese Witherspoon takes center stage in this adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s autobiography,

Name: LONGPORT MEDIA (00LOON); Width: 10 in; Depth: 2.63 in; Color: Black plus three

stripping off the Hollywood polish for something more raw. The gripping story of a woman who hikes 1,000 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail to reset her self-destructive life offers both the beauty of nature and some vicarious solitude. —GENEVIEVE VALENTINE Annie This new adaptation turns the orphanage into a foster home and Daddy Warbucks into tech-industry workaholic Will Stacks, played by Jamie Foxx. It’s uneven, but Quvenzhané Wallis is a charming Annie, and the film works hard to make you smile. —G.V. Selma (opening Dec. 25) We live in a country where a halfcentury struggle for civil rights is still too relevant to current events. Selma, about the voting-rights marches of 1965 that were met with police brutality and government runarounds, hits sadly close to home, but early screenings suggest this is an insightful, powerful portrait of a moment we’re still living through. —G.V. Into the Woods (opening Dec. 25) Sondheim’s deliciously bitter and metatextual Into the Woods is getting the Disney treatment this Christmas from Rob Marshall. And they’ve pulled out all the stops: assembling an all-star cast, using the CGI-standard of current production design and taking a cavalier approach to the cynical original. Will it work? Who knows. Will theater nerds everywhere shamefacedly sneak into the movie to find out? Of course. —G.V.

chairs to lounge in. The hobbit’s home is an idyllic place to be happy—except for one little detail: He lives there alone. Which brings us straight to the next point: Tolkien’s stories are also very much about enjoying company. Aragorn and Legolas didn’t become modern movie icons just because they were heroic warriors and studly eye candy, but because they became Frodo’s chosen brethren; the intensity of their shared experience journeying across Middle-Earth catapulted them into the role of all-but-family. Jackson carefully reconstructed this dynamic in The Hobbit, though it took the entirety of An Unexpected Journey to build Bilbo’s relationship with the wayward dwarf king Thorin into the sort of bromance we were waiting for. Meanwhile, there’s another motif at work that can’t help but conjure feelings of family: the simple act of breaking bread together. Shared meals are evoked repeatedly and consciously through the Tolkien stories, from Merry and Pippin’s obsession with breakfasts in LOTR to the fateful dinner party that kicks off The Hobbit. It’s such an obvious ritual as to be almost invisible, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a huge, if unconscious, part of the story’s appeal. And speaking of ritual, that’s the third element tugging at our wintertime heartstrings: tradition itself. The sense of long history is built deeply into Middle-Earth. Key to engaging with Tolkien’s story is the idea that you’re picking up late in a saga that has been unfolding for centuries on end—just like the long holiday traditions we celebrate in the various millennia-old faiths of real life. The Battle of Five Armies reminds us that Gandalf’s scenes with the elven queen Galadriel, while they’re among The Hobbit films’ most noted divergences from the text of the novel, are central to that feeling of long history, both on the metatextual level— they’re the two wise old characters we loved from LOTR, and now we, the audience, can savor them anew in their somewhat younger years—and in terms of the moments they actually share onscreen, as the tremendous chemistry between Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchett quietly implies the sort of long, unseen intimacy we share with our nearest and dearest.
