he fifth annual Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation Freeze For A Cause is scheduled for 10am Saturday, Feb. 22, at Atlantic City’s world-famous Steel Pier (North Carolina Avenue and the beach). The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation promotes cancer awareness and assists individuals battling cancer both emotionally and financially. To date, the foundation has donated more than $450,000 to individuals and organizations focused on fighting cancer. The foundation was created in 2001 when Atlantic City surfing legend Dean Randazzo was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and has successfully battled the disease four times. “I truly love the Freeze for a Cause, it is always a great time,” says Foundation trustee Frank Levin. “It is really cool how the surfing community comes together in freezing temperatures to help the foundation raise money. It’s a great way to get together in the winter with some people you haven’t seen since September.” New Jersey’s only extreme coldwater surfing contest includes five categories for men and women. Surfing entries are $30 for the first division and $15 for all other divisions. An after-party starts 5pm at Margaritaville at Resorts. Tickets for the after party are $25 and include a dinner buffet, door prizes, raffles, live music and a cash bar. E-mail info@thedrcf.com or visit deanrandazzocancerfoundation.org.

t wasn’t a surprise that David Bromberg, who performs at the Levoy Theater in Millville on Friday, Feb. 21, was one of the musicians called upon to record a bevy of traditional songs when Bob Dylan was recording music for what would become his 1970 album, Self Portrait. (Late last year, Columbia’s Legacy division released Another Self Portrait in Dylan’s Bootleg Series, on which you can listen to several takes of songs just featuring Dylan, Bromberg and only one or a couple of other players — a lot different than the over-produced original album.) Over Bromberg’s 40-year recording and performing career the Delaware resident has immersed himself in old songs and on his new record, Only Slighty Mad, his playing and singing have never sounded better. Bromberg conjures up the Stanley Brothers, Alberta Hunter, Big Bill Broonzy and others as well as several fitting originals, including “The Strongest Man Alive,” a song he describes as “an old English drinking song that I wrote.” Speaking of Dylan, his former guitarist Larry Campbell produces and the tracks were laid down in two weeks at the late Levon Helm’s studio in Woodstock, N.Y. Several top-notch guests appear on the album, including Campbell. — Jeff Schwachter

Forsythe Refuge Kicks Off 75th Anniversary Series By Ray Schweibert

T

he Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Oceanville, Galloway Township, celebrates its 75th anniversary this year and the refuge has a series of lectures planned to commemorate the occasion. Entitled “Evenings at Forsythe,” the monthly series focuses on several different elements of the refuge. All programs start at 7pm in the refuge headquarters auditorium (800 Great Creek Rd., Oceanville), and light refreshments will be served. The series kicks off on Friday, Feb. 21, with Forsythe’s Birds Through the Seasons, which focuses on the fact that every guest visit to Forsythe Refuge is a different one, with hundreds of species of birds using the refuge as the seasons change. Forsythe visitor services manager Don Freiday will discuss what species are most prevalent during each season. Other lecture series planned include A History of Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (March 21); Forsythe Habitat Management: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at How We Provide for Wildlife (April 18); The Wetlands of Forsythe (May 16); and Life on the Beach (June 20). First established as the Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge on Jan. 24, 1939, and renamed for the late congressman Edwin B. Forsythe when it was combined with the Barnegat National Wildlife Refuge in 1984, there is much to know and appreciate about this 47,000-acre jewel of Atlantic County. Call the Refuge at 652-1665, visit fws.gov/refuge/Edwin_B_Forsythe or find the refuge on Facebook. The Forsythe Refuge is under the auspices of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (fws.gov). see more online @

Winter Sanctum

Haven at Golden Nugget has been a hot nightspot from the start, and now adds ‘MisBeHaven Thursdays’ to help ease the freeze of winter. By Ray Schweibert

H

aven got hampered by winter weather in its initial attempt to launch a new night of revelry, but if patrons found the cutting-edge nightclub worth the wait when it debuted last Memorial Day weekend, two years after the start of Tilman Fertitta’s multi-million-dollar transformation of what would become the new Golden Nugget, then surely waiting another week for MisBeHaven Thursdays will be no sweat. Now slated to debut Feb. 20 with DJ Sean Perry opening for fellow renowned Skam Artists DJ Sid Vicious, Haven’s new industry night features $200 Patron tequila, Ultimat vodka, Moet Chandon champagne and Pyrat rum bottle-service specials, $8 Patron Silver shots and $4 Patron X.O., Dark Cocoa or Citronge shots, plus $59 Thursday room rates, complimentary parking and free admission with any receipt over $30 from Vic & Anthony’s steakhouse. MisBeHaven Thursdays takes over for an industry night that had been at Haven on

Mondays. That did well but was switched, in part, as a sort of friendly gesture to marina district neighbor Borgata, which for years has been doing hospitality-industry nights at both its mur.mur and Izakaya venues on Mondays. “We figured that we were sharing revenues with Borgata on Monday nights and were kind of going against them, and basically Monday was theirs,” says Golden Nugget director of food and beverage Kevin Scull. “They’ve been doing a Monday industry night for the longest time and we just felt that Thursday would work better for our business in terms of helping to compact the weekend and get the weekend started for us. “[MisBeHaven Thursdays] is a give-back to the industry personnel who have helped us be

successful on Friday and Saturday nights,” he adds. “Since many of those folks are working themselves on those nights, this gives them a special night to come out and enjoy themselves. It’s also an opportunity for some of the staff from the other clubs to come over and see what we’re doing, as it’s always been a kind of give-and-take in that regard. Industry nights throughout town are geared toward giving staff members who work weekends special nights to go out, let off some steam and have some fun.” Haven debuted last May 24 with pop sensation Ke$ha and Australian singer/DJ Havana Brown sort of tag-teaming the opening festivities over three nights. The 12,000-square-foot nightclub is below ground level (it had once been a parking garage) and features a state-ofthe-art Function One sound and lighting systems, digitalized kiosks where friends can pose for pictures and live-stream the shots to social media outlets like Facebook, two full-service bars, 25 leather banquettes and The Veranda — a semi-enclosed space were guests can go to smoke, play table games or relax by lounge seating surrounding two large fire pits. “On weekends it’s really popular out there [on The Veranda],” says Scull. “You can go out and relax, have a smoke, there’s gaming out there, and you never really have to leave the club or worry about reentry. “Overall we’re ecstatic with Haven’s performance since we launched it. We’re really seen a nice increase in business and we attribute

that to world-class DJs, maximizing the experience with good customer service, top-shelf entertainment, reasonable drink prices — all of the above. We try to make sure that when customers come in they’re going to be having the most fun possible.” Rounding out the weekend following the MisBeHaven Thursdays launch is DJ Jerzy on Friday (Feb. 21, opening set by DJ Reach), and the return of Havana Brown on Saturday (Feb. 22, opening set by DJ Sean Perry). “While we don’t really use that ‘resident’ logo when we refer to our DJ lineup, [Havana Brown] definitely has become one of our favorites,” says Scull. “We’ve brought her in many times and hope to have her here many more times.” MisBeHaven Thursdays kicks off next month (March 6) with its “Half Way to Summer Party” with Skam Artists DJs Jerzy and Sean Perry. It will feature a Miss MisBeHaven bikini contest that will see the winner claim $500 and free admission to Haven for a year. DJ Skratchy will host the final MisBeHaven Thursdays party of this month (Feb. 27), and others upcoming will include DJ Big Syphe (March 13), Eli Escobar and Vicetone (March 20) and DJ Gusto (March 27). For a full DJ schedule, go to HavenAC.com and click the “events” link. ■ see more online @

Barrage at the Taj Asylum Fight League, the premier cultivator of mixed martial arts talent in the tri-state area, returns to the Taj for the first of four amateur MMA events in 2014. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

16

FEBRUARY 20 - 26, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

F

or some it may serve as the ultimate purge of pent-up aggression, for others a test of mettle against their fellow man, and for a few it may even be a gateway to greatness in the ever-growing world of mixed martial arts (MMA). Since its establishment about five years ago, the Asylum Fight League has evolved into one of the premier MMA development leagues in the Northeast. Home-based in Atlantic City, the league was started by South Jersey product Carl Mascarenhas, who has since promoted about 200 events in the tri-state area including over 40 in Atlantic City. Asylum’s debut in the resort was at the former Trump Marina. The league has since taken up residency at Trump Taj Mahal’s Xanadu Theater, where on Saturday, Feb. 22, Asylum Fight League 44 will feature about a dozen scheduled three-round bouts with combatants ranging in weight from 130 to 210 pounds. Mascarenhas is the trainer of several MMA fighters and is a retired professional fighter himself. His pro career was preceded by a gold medal as a member of the U.S. Kickboxing Team in 1995 (in Stuttgart, Germany), and he is also a former U.S. National kickboxing champion. Asylum’s success thus far is largely based, he states, on his extensive personal background in the fight game and the derived ability to make competitive, evenly matched bouts. “We’re really becoming known as the crème-of-the-crop in terms of match-ups in the tri-state area,” says Mascarenhas, whose event Saturday will be the first of

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

four scheduled at the Xanadu in 2014, the next one in May. “I wouldn’t say it’s that we’re doing anything particularly better than anyone else, but, as a retired fighter myself, I think I can see certain things in other fighters that allows me to better match up opponents [and] to make bouts that are closer in skill level. “We’ve done about 40 shows now going back to when Golden Nugget [where Asylum last staged an event in May 2013] was Trump Marina,” he says. “Our first show [at the Taj] was a little scary as attendance wasn’t what I hoped, but as word spread and more people became aware of where we went after Golden Nugget through better publicity, we just packed them in that second show. It was awesome. I’ll tell you, the Taj has been awesome to work with and the Xanadu is just large enough [capacity about 1,400] to accommodate a good-sized number, and also small enough to still be very intimate and allow everybody to have a good view of the action.” Mascarenhas points to a young fighter named James Chambers as a potential future star in the sport after just one amateur fight, a 39-second win by submission (arm bar) in Asylum’s last event at the Taj on Nov. 9. “Heavy hands, a great ground game — [Chambers] has a tough fight ahead of him [at the 205-pound limit] in Allan Hendrickson [2-0, both knockouts] though,” says Mascarenhas. “But James fought like a veteran pro in his amateur debut.” Another key match-up pits Atlantic City’s Cesar Balmaceda (1-0) against another local,

Chris Landry (1-1), at super middleweight (161-168 pounds). While both are relatively new to MMA, Balmaceda, at only age 18, is a skilled wrestler, having become the first Atlantic City High School grappler to qualify for the state wrestling tournament in over 40 years last March. Balmaceda tallied a 36-4 record as a senior 160-pounder for the Vikings in 2013, and had winning records in his sophomore and junior years also. In his MMA debut at the Taj in November, Balmaceda notched a first-round knockout. Mascarenhas does not sugarcoat the fact that MMA can be brutal, and that the typical fan comes to events to see knockouts. But ensuring evenly matched bouts based on experience, unified rules (banning such things as head butts, groin or throat strikes) and structured weight classes has made the sport less vicious than it might appear on the surface. There have been few demographic fatalities in MMA compared to other contact sports, according to a study by the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM), since the state of New Jersey was instrumental in helping to create the rules that govern the sport in 2001 (overseen by then N.J. athletic commissioner Larry Hazzard, who was previously a longtime highly regarded boxing referee). “I pro boxed, I pro kickboxed, I was a pro in MMA, and by far the safety valves that they put on mixed martial arts exceeds them all and makes it far safer than it may look,” says Mascarenhas. “I mean, it looks brutal because you have attacks coming from multiple angles [besides a knockout by strike, which accounts for about 28 percent

of short stoppages according to that BJSM study, an opponent can “submit” by choke hold or other hold], but if you get knocked down and are obviously hurt, [the ref] stops the fight in MMA. In boxing they’ll give you a standing-eight count and send you back out for more punishment.” MMA also bans a fighter from competing for a minimum of three months after a knockout, and can only gain clearance through a medical doctor’s approval. And in no way is that OK automatic. A case in point may be Saturday’s light-heavyweight bout between Frank Zampese and Roger Borshe Jr., two fighters at or above age 40 and relative MMA novices. Zampese’s only fight was last March at the Taj, where a single strike took him out in five seconds. “[Zampese] said this was on his bucket list, but after he got knocked out he’s been bugging me to do it again, saying ‘that was not me, it was a flash knockout, please put me back on the card,’” says Mascarenhas. “I called the state [seeking approval] and got a great match for him [against Borshe, whose MMA past includes a pair of wins by decision]. They’re both trainers at gyms, so it’s like the perfect match-up. They’re scrappers who like to brawl and go toe-to-toe. The crowd is really going to see who’s got it in that one.” Since it combines elements of all combat sports, backgrounds in wrestling, boxing or martial arts would certainly serve as a bridge to MMA success. But if the route is more grassroots and direct, the right coaches, mentors and training regiment is crucial, says Mascarenhas. “My first amateur fight I was eight years old — it was a kickboxing bout,” he says. “I trained my entire life and was fortunate to hook up with coaches who were fantastic and guided me in the right way. They knew how to take a young athlete and make it fun for them, not try to make it into a job. You’ll know, with the right guidance, if it’s for you or not, and we’ve had several fighters be successful in the amateur ranks who went on to success in the pros.” Other fights tentatively scheduled for Saturday night (some MMA debuts) include Michael Kim (2-0) vs. Robert Wallin (2-1) at 135-140 (pounds); Kade Ford (1-0) vs. Ivan Perez (0-2) at 135-140; Matthew Spellen (0-1) vs. Chris Otlowski (0-1) at 195-205; James Scibetti (0-2) vs. Rodrigo Romulo (1-0) at 147-154; Corey Callender (0-1) vs. Craig Brian May (0-0) at 168-175; Steven Calero (0-1) vs. Brian Motter (0-0) at 135140; Jeorge Garcia (0-0) vs. John Almeida (0-0) at 147-154; and Romulo Garcia (0-0) vs. Eddie Gomez (0-0) at 130-135. ■ see more online @

Wednesday, October 26th 6:30 to 10:00 pm SPECIAL SECTION Register How to stay energized throughout your wedding day online

A

couple’s wedding day is the culmination of months and months of planning. For most, it is one of the most memorable, magical days of their lives, filled with fond moments of time spent with close friends and family. As enjoyable as a wedding can be, most brides and grooms who have already tied the knot can attest that a wedding is a long, often tiring day. It is very easy for energy levels to wane. To ensure you have enough energy to last through to the final good-bye of the evening, follow these suggestions to remain energized. * Recognize your wedding day is a very long day. It’s possible to rise quite early in the morning to begin prepping with makeup, hair styles, wardrobe and more. If the party is an evening reception, it could last until the wee hours of the morning. You may find yourself up for nearly 24 hours, when the cameras will be flashing and the video rolling throughout. Naturally, you’ll want to look your best throughout. * Get a good night’s sleep the night before. Get to bed early the night before so you will get ample sleep and look rested. It is understandable that nerves and excitement may get the best of you and make it difficult to fall asleep. If you often grow anxious and struggle to fall asleep before big events, talk to your doctor prior to the wedding to ask if you can be prescribed a one-time-only sleeping pill that will ensure you get to sleep promptly. Do not take this medication with alcohol, and be sure to take it only if you can get a full 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Otherwise you may experience medicine hangover. * Enjoy a hearty breakfast. At breakfast on the morning of your wedding, consume a combination of carbohydrates and protein. The carbs will provide the initial burst of

energy you need to get going, and the protein will keep you feeling full. A combination of whole wheat toast, fresh fruit and Greek yogurt makes for a filling start to the day. * Stay hydrated. Although drinking a lot of water can result in more frequent trips to the bathroom -- which can be cumbersome for brides wearing their gowns -- it is essential to stay hydrated. Dehydration can result in headaches, weakness and dizziness and may make you feel cranky. Be sure to consume water throughout the day. * Pack some snacks. The time between breakfast and the cocktail hour of a wedding may be significant. In your wedding “survival” kit, be sure to pack some easy snacks to eat. Trail mix can be nibbled for a boost of energy, and a banana can take the edge off of hunger pangs. Avoid anything messy that can drip onto clothing or get stuck in your teeth. Arrange to have snacks stowed in the limousine or another mode of transportation so that you can refuel on the way to the ceremony or in transit to the reception. * Don’t overdo it with caffeine. It may be tempting to lean on an energy drink or a super-size cup of coffee to give you the boost you need. But caffeine is only a temporary fix. After the effects of the caffeine wear off, you could find yourself more tired than before and crash at an inopportune time during the day. Instead, a brisk walk outdoors may recharge your batteries. Afterward, time spent on the dance floor enjoying the reception will likely stimulate some adrenaline to keep you going. * Eat dinner. When family is beckoning and the photographer needs to get yet another pose, it is easy to skip dinner. Be firm with your decision to enjoy your meal. After all, you paid for it and it should not go to waste. Besides, sitting down to dinner enables you to rest and absorb the atmosphere of the wedding.

* Continue to drink plenty of water throughout the night. Alcoholic beverages may be flowing, but too many spirits can compromise your energy levels. Be sure to balance the booze with hydrating fluids, such as water or juice. Weddings take up the entire day, and it can be easy to succumb to a lack of energy as the day progresses. But by heeding a few tips, it’s possible to remain in top form throughout the entire wedding day. n

ccording to a study from XO Group Inc., creator of wedding websites TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com, 350,000 destination weddings take place annually. Such figures reflect a growing trend of couples who want to tailor their weddings to their own personalities, even if that means tying the knot in exotic or unusual locales. But as popular as destination weddings have become, couples who have had such weddings can attest that planning a destination wedding is not necessarily easier than planning a more traditional ceremony close to home. Though destination weddings can make for memorable affairs, there are some factors couples must consider when mulling whether or not to have a destination wedding. Guest list The XO Group study found that destination weddings have an average of 86 guests. When sitting down to organize their guest lists, many couples realize they have well over 100 guests on their lists. Such couples may find a destination wedding especially difficult to pull off, as resorts may or may not be able to accommodate such a substantial number of guests. In addition, couples who hope to invite children to their weddings might want to reconsider a destination affair, as those youngsters’ parents will have to foot the bill for additional airfare and accommodations and, depending on when the wedding takes place, pull the kids out of school for an extended period of time. Couples with smaller guest lists might find a destination wedding much more manageable than those whose guest lists crack triple digits. Another thing to consider is that the larger the guest list, the more likely many of those guests will not be able to afford to attend or get enough time off from work to make it to a destination wedding. Couples who want to ensure all of their loved ones can be there with them on their big days might be better off avoiding destination weddings. Accessibility Accessibility is a common concern for couples considering destination weddings. Destination weddings typically ask guests to travel far to attend the ceremony and reception, but there are ways to make that travel less of an ordeal. When choosing a location for their destination weddings, couples should consider the cost and convenience of travel. Remote islands are not very accessible, and as a result guests will likely have to pay a pretty penny for their flights and lodging. In addition, the more remote a destination wedding locale is, the less convenient getting there figures to be. Nonstop flights likely won’t be a possibility. Before choosing a locale for a destination wedding, research flights, making sure that affordable flights are available within spitting distance of loved ones’ homes and that they won’t have to suffer through multiple connecting flights when traveling to and from the wedding. Weather Couples who choose outdoor weddings close to home are often familiar enough with local weather patterns to choose a wedding date that likely won’t be interrupted by harsh weather. But choosing an overseas or distant locale erases that comfort level, and couples may find themselves worrying about storms or other inclement weather conditions as their wedding days draw nearer. Before choosing a locale for their destination weddings, couples should thoroughly research each potential destination’s weather patterns. Brides, grooms and guests alike don’t want to do all of that traveling only to end up indoors because it just sohappens to be tropical storm season. Competition As destination weddings have grown in popularity, the competition for idyllic locales and top-notch venues has increased. That competition is great for venue owners’ bottom lines, but it might not be so great for couples looking to keep their wedding costs down. Costs might be considerably less in the off-season, but that’s also when storms and inclement weather tend to take hold, Booking a venue early can help couples mitigate some of the costs of a destination wedding, but the growing popularity of destination weddings might make them out of reach for couples working on tight budgets. n

Explore unique cake flavor combinations

A

wedding cake is the piece de resistance of the wedding ceremony. Guests anxiously await the unveiling of the cake near the end of the festivities. Modern cakes are showpieces grander in scale than in years past. As bakers and confectioners hone their skills with fondant, buttercream and gum paste even further, the results are often impressive, awe-inspiring cake designs. While the look of a wedding cake is certainly important, cakes should not only look good, but taste good as well. Vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream frosting was once the gold standard. But today’s couples are being more adventurous with their wedding cakes and winning rave reviews from guests along the way. The vast scope of wedding cake flavor choices available to brides and grooms is astonishing. Options may range from the traditional to something adventurous and daring.

Keeping in mind that couples will need to please the masses, finding a compromise between plain vanilla and a mochachile-coconut surprise is essential. Otherwise, they risk an unpopular flavor and a lot of wasted, expensive cake. Some couples shy away from more adventurous cakes because they fear something chocolately or not white in color will not be well suited to a wedding reception. Such couples should keep in mind that any flavor of cake can be hidden beneath layers of pearly white fondant or royal icing. Therefore, the sky is the limit with regard to flavor combinations. Those who might want to veer from tradition can consider these clever cake combinations. * Lemon cake with vanilla buttercream: Lemons are tart, juicy and refreshing, helping to cleanse the palate after a rich meal. Lemon cake, with its summery feel, is tailor-

made for summer weddings. The flavor is popular enough to appeal to many, but just a little different to add an unexpected zip of flavor. * Chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and mocha filling: True chocoholics will be hard-pressed to resist such a decadent flavor profile. Chocolate can be sweet and satisfying and a welcome change from the vanilla cakes commonly served. For traditionalists, the cake can be covered with a white chocolate ganache. Or couples can ask that the cake be adorned with white sugar roses for an eye-appealing contrast. Chocolate cakes covered with autumn hued flowers go over well at fall weddings. * Red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting: Red velvet cake was once a regionally specific staple, but now has grown steadily in popularity across the country. Red velvet has quickly become the new classic, as its vibrant red coloring offers a shock of something different, while the flavor is mild for those who are not comfortable taking risks. The richness and creaminess of cream cheese is irresistible. * White cake with chocolate mousse: Couples who want a bit of chocolate but do not want to be overwhelmed can select a white cake that is filled with light and rich chocolate mousse. It’s the perfect blend of vanilla and chocolate for guests who enjoy both. * Variety tiers: Those who cannot settle on just one flavor can have different flavors on each tier of their cakes. This gives guests some flavorful variety and enables them to pick their favorite flavor combination. Brides- and grooms-to-be who have specific flavors in mind can ask their bakers to include two cupcakes with the wedding cake. Then the couple can enjoy their own mini cakes while the rest of the guests enjoy a more classic cake. In addition, an assortment of cupcakes in lieu of one cake can give guests the opportunity to sample several different flavors. Cakes are a part of many special events, but few cakes are fawned over as much as wedding cakes. Couples can spice things up by choosing a nontraditional flavor combination. n

Tips for newlyweds about to merge finances

N

ewlyweds often have a lot on their plates upon returning from their honeymoons. One of the more critical issues newly married couples must address is their finances and how those finances will be combined going forward. Combining finances can be a touchy subject for many couples, especially those who had not given much thought to their finances prior to tying the knot. But there are steps couples can take to make the process of merging finances go more smoothly. * Discuss finances early and often. Allowing finances to be the elephant in the room is a mistake, as couples do not want to begin their lives together treading lightly around an issue as significant as finances. Couples should discuss

their expenditures and spending habits as early as possible, as one of the biggest hurdles newly married couples must clear is coming to grips with one another’s financial habits. If such habits have already been discussed, then developing a financial plan will be much easier once that time comes. When discussing finances, define both short-term and longterm goals and how each of you can adjust your spending habits to make those goals come true. * Pay off any debts. The cost of weddings has skyrocketed over the last several decades, and many newlyweds find themselves in a considerable amount of debt upon returning from their honeymoons. When merging finances, couples should prioritize paying down such debt, as debt is a significant source of stress for newlyweds and long-married couples

alike. Newly married couples with little or no debt should avoid spending above their means in the months after they get married. Such spending is commonplace, as newly married couples often want to fully furnish their new homes or reward themselves for pulling off their weddings. But new debt can be just as stressful on a marriage as debt from the wedding, so avoid this potentially problematic pitfall by paying down existing debts with your newly merged finances. * Make note of mutual expenses and open a joint account to pay for those expenses. Mutual expenses like mortgage payments, food and utilities should be the responsibility of each partner, and a joint account should be established to handle such expenses. When opening a joint account, discuss how much and how often each partner will contribute money. One partner might earn considerably more money than another, so work out a reasonable agreement that details how much each partner will contribute each month, and whether such contributions will be made on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. n

Tips when toasting the bride and groom

T

oasting the bride and groom at a wedding reception is a responsibility that typically falls on the shoulders of the bride’s father as well as the best man and the maid of honor. Though it is an honor to give a wedding toast, it also can be nerve-wracking, as no one wants to give a toast that’s memorable for all the wrong reasons. While the best toasts are often those that veer off the beaten path, coming from the heart rather than from a how-to guide found on the Internet, there is a certain formula men and women can follow to ensure their toasts cover all of the appropriate bases without offending the bridal party or fellow guests. * Acknowledge the guests. Families are more geographically diverse than ever before, so more and more weddings host guests who come from far and wide to celebrate with happy couples on their wedding days. It’s customary for men and women making wedding toasts to acknowledge the guests, thanking them for being there. This is often a great way for best men and maids of honor to break the ice and calm their nerves, especially at larger weddings where they may only know a small percentage of the guests. When thanking the guests, be sure to thank the parents of the bride and groom as well. * Explain your relationship to the bride and/or groom. Best men and maids of honor should devote a portion of their toasts to explaining their personal relationships with the bride and/or groom. Introduce yourself and explain how you met the bride or groom. Oftentimes, such stories have a comical twist that can further calm your nerves. * Aim for a jovial toast. Wedding toasts are typically given at the wedding reception, when guests and the bridal party are ready to celebrate. Such an atmosphere lends itself to a jovial toast wherein best men and maids of honor focus on happy times with the bride and groom. Tell a funny anecdote that illustrates the special bond you have with the bride or groom. When choosing a story to tell, remember to keep things appropriate for guests of all ages, including young children. * Give your best wishes to the bride and groom before raising your glass. Raising your glass to toast the bride and groom is often the last step before your toasting duties officially end. But before you raise your glass, remember to offer your best wishes to both the bride and groom. Once those sentiments have been expressed, ask the guests to raise their glasses and toast the newlyweds. n

Choosing the right wedding reception favors

P

lanning a perfect wedding is no small undertaking. From scheduling venues and hiring vendors to tasting menus, lots of decisions must be made when planning a wedding. But when the pieces fall into place, the entire day can be magical. One of the final components of weddings are the favors guests will take home with them as mementos of the festivities. Though favors don’t require immediate attention, that does not mean couples should wait until the last minute to made decisions regarding their wedding favors. Brides- and grooms-to-be should not underestimate the importance of handing out wedding favors, a tradition with a rich history. A wedding favor is considered a symbol of good will to guests, and there are many different wedding favors on the market. Finding the right one can take a little work. It is usually a good idea to find something that suits the theme of the wedding and is both long-lasting and practical. Try to avoid anything that is too kitschy. A couple’s budget should be considered when choosing wedding favors. A couple may want to give their guests lavish gifts but should only do so if their budget allows. It may be challenging for couples to find favors that fit the theme of their wedding, as well as their own personalities and budgets. But it can be done. The following are some favorfinding guidelines. Be creative Wedding favors can be just about anything, so there’s no need to stick to Jordan almonds or wine bottle stoppers. The more creative couples are, the more receptive their guests will likely be. For example, for an autumn-theme wedding, fill mason jars with the ingredients for a spiced cake and give the recipe directions on a tag. For a summer wedding, gift guests with a sun and surf survival bag, full of sunblock, a beach towel and sunglasses. Complete the theme Some weddings follow a particular theme from start to finish, and wedding favors should stick with that theme. Couples who will showcase their love of travel on their wedding days may want to give guests keychains or purse holders that feature popular landmarks around the world. Those who are admitted beach bums may want to present a

small fishbowl with sand and a goldfish inside, reminiscent of days at the seashore. Go traditional Couples who opt for universally appealing favors can lean toward some popular options, such as silver cake servers, candlestick holders, decorative photo frames, or engraved keepsake boxes. Aim for favors that have utility. Otherwise, favors may end up collecting dust on someone’s shelf. Food and beverage gifts are fun Food favors mean guests can enjoy their gifts and not have to worry about finding space inside their homes to display trinkets. Food favors can be lavishly decorated cookies, fine chocolates, petit fours, small bottles of champagne or cupcakes decorated like the wedding cake. Favors are often integral to wedding celebrations. Selecting a favor that will be appreciated and fit with the wedding is often a fun and stress-free part of planning a wedding. n

Casa Di Napoli

Casa Di Napoli epitomizes all that fine dining entails, from the ambience to the cordiality of the staff and, of course, to the food. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

oaring ceilings, terracotta hues and romantic open space at Casa Di Napoli exemplify everything we’ve come to associate with fine Italian dining. An original anchor restaurant at Showboat, Casa has been in existence since the sprawling facility debuted in 1987. While it has enjoyed a solid reputation prior, the current edition, featuring masterful cuisine from chef Carl Colucci, deserves mention among the most elevated purveyors of Italian fare regionally. A recent review meal — on perhaps the single busiest Saturday night of winter — demonstrated that from start to finish. Begin with the warm, genuine welcome all visitors receive from front of the house management. What is it they say about first impressions? We can’t tell you how many restaurants miss the mark in this regard right from jump. In today’s crowded, competitive market, dining out should always be treated as if it is a special occasion by initial-contact restaurant personnel. In point of fact, all employees we encountered — hostesses, wait staff, food runners and bussers — provide a genteel, gracious experience, an ideal foil for Colucci’s creations. We began with southern Italian classic mozzarella en carozza — soft, fresh cheese stuffed inside Italian bread and panfried. It takes a gentle hand to create the kind of golden caramelization, known as the Maillard Reaction in French cookery, accomplished here. Within the bread shell, cheese was warm and melted, but not so much as to pool or spill out like chocolate lava cake. Accompanied by chunky marinara, the log-like shape proved more than enough

for two to split. Arugula salad brought a heaping mound of tender greens, enhanced by spectacular fig jam. Striped across the plate beneath the salad, this sublime raw product, seasoned with cumin, delivered a punch of earthy, smoky sweetness. Pairing well with the natural tang and pepper of arugula, the fig’s complex essence added depth and roundness to a potent main ingredient. Clams oreganata, six gorgeous little necks, were spooned with just enough seasoned breadcrumbs to compliment the seafood, without overwhelming its natural delicacy. The clams themselves were tender and so fresh they oozed just the slightest bit of delicious briny, oceanic

liquid when consumed. A simple dish based on quality ingredients handled skillfully, the standard of all great Italian food. No meal from that country would be authentic or complete however, without a pasta course. We split an order of sacchetti, pretty little pouches, tortellini-sized. Soft and pliable, they lounged in a steam bath of rosa tomato sauce, accessorized by shards of crispy pancetta. Warm and comforting, these pillowy bundles were a lovely antidote to the chafing temps outside — the very definition of Italian soul food. One of the most pleasant surprises at Casa is their variety of seafood entrees. We counted more than 10, including mul-

tiple nightly additions. After much debate, my dining partner settled on seafood risotto, blending scallops, shrimp, lots of lump crabmeat and peas with northern Italy’s most cherished grain. Presented in a wide bowl, the risotto was admirably loose, spreading out as she dug into the mountainous serving. A pair of striking heirloom baby carrots, in the darkest imaginable shade of red, made for a vibrant, contrasting garnish topside. But the rice itself, as it should be, remained front-and-center, definitively playing lead. Achingly good, it possessed just enough residual bite to be texturally correct, often an issue. Packed with the trio of aquatic proteins in a nearly oneto-one ratio, it was hearty and thoroughly satisfying. Diver scallops, my selection, arrived on a long, narrow plate. The quintet of silver dollar-sized mollusks had been seared, leaving a similar golden crust as our mozz starter. Sliced open, they were nearly sashimirare, the only proper way to protect these succulent bivalves amazing natural personalities. They rode atop a bed of soft polenta, studded with bits of slender asparagus. A fairly assertive citrus lemon butter sauce with pancetta and dots of arugula pesto on each scallop added thoughtful complimentary and contrasting tastes to a sensational plating. Desserts brought traditional tartufo, a hard chocolate dome surrounding dense chocolate ice cream with cherries at its center plus a well-crafted chocolate hazelnut cake. Translating as “truffle” the tartufo, rich but not overly sweet, was a sterling exclamation point to a memorable Italian repast. ■ see more online @

Mamet Remake

‘Sexual Perversity in Chicago’ becomes ‘About Last Night’ again By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

D

avid Mamet’s play Sexual Perversity in Chicago was first brought to the big screen in 1986’s About Last Night with Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Jim Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins. It was part of the Brat Pack cycle of films thanks to Lowe and Moore, but Mamet’s bittersweet take on sexuality and love was the driving force that added spice to an R-rated romance. The spice is still there 29 years later in what we might call the “Black Pack” remake top-lined by Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall and Joy Bryant, the latter three all co-stars in the 2012 hit romantic comedy Think Like A Man. My reference to a pack is therefore based on the proposition that a series of films with African-American Generation X casts have shown a strong pull at the box office in recent years, including the 2013 The Best Man sequel The Best Man Holiday, just as the Brat Pack films did in their day. In About Last Night, the setting is Los Angeles. Michael Ealy is Danny and Kevin Hart is Bernie, best buddies and co-workers at a restaurant supply company. Bernie and his current friend with benefits, Joan (Regina Hall) — the g-word, as in girlfriend, is a terrifying word Bernie avoids — have arranged for their pals Danny and Debbie (Joy Bryant) to meet. Danny is still licking his wounds from his last long-term lover and Debbie has been too busy to bother with dating. Surrounded by the aggressive drunken shenanigans of Bernie and Joan, Danny and Debbie slip away and slip into bed in an unexpected one-night stand that lingers into a relationship. With the underbelly of the story being a Mamet play, this is not some sweet by-thebook romantic comedy, but a more honest examination of the pitfalls of commitment and the caution that can cause a relationship to die out.

About Last Night Directed by Steve Pink; RATED R

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

Along the way of the ups and downs of these two couples, the film offers some terrific comedic set pieces, just what one would expect from the movies’ hottest comic actor right now, Hart. In particular the holidays are trouble, whether it’s a Halloween party at their favorite bar, with Danny and Debbie rocking an Ike and Tina Turner look while Bernie and Joan have a total meltdown, a disastrous Thanksgiving with a few friends or an official New Year’s Eve break-up, the holidays bring out the nasty side. But eventually — after all, this movie was released Valentine’s Day weekend — the couples find a way to cope and push through to the next level. Ealy’s movie star good looks are well utilized both here on the big screen and in his current role as an emotionally vulnerable android in the TV series Almost Human. It’s a wonder it has taken so long for Ealy to hit the hot button radar after his stint as an undercover operative in Showtime’s terrific series Sleeper Cell nearly a decade ago. Hall is a terrific foil for Hart, whose loutish behavior is always threatening to go too far, but never quite gets there thanks to his impeccable sense of when to pull back and reveal his vulnerable side. Bryant completes the quartet as the straight shooter who wants to find love without any hint of desperation. About Last Night is a solid foray into the battleground of romance. n

Michael Turco’s Homecoming The ‘Masters of Illusion Live’ star became a fan of magic spending summers in Brigantine By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

M

The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Evening at the Improv. Arriving for the final performance on Feb. 27 is Jonathan Pendragon, who has performed at three Presidential Galas in Washington, for the Queen of England, the Prince of Wales and the Royal Family of Monaco. His co-star is a terrific illusionist with local roots, Michael Turco. Most recently performing in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood with Michael Turco’s Magic & Mayhem, the New Jersey native has been performing magic since he was five years old, inspired by the magicians he saw at Atlantic City casinos when he family spent summers in Brigantine. Turco performed in Atlantic City with his own show, Wonder, in 2009, and in Boardwalk Follies in 2011 and is looking forward to returning to our area. He talked with Atlantic City Weekly about that, and what “wonders” he will have for us when he performs here Feb. 27.

It must be nice coming back to the area that first inspired you to become a magician. I love it. I always loved performing in Atlantic City. I love seeing friends and family, growing up in that area. That’s the place where I first started. Every time I come back it is a dream come true. You are starring in the final presentation of Masters of Illusion Live. What are you bringing to dazzle the audience? I’m always bringing something spectacular. A bunch of stuff I’m bringing is new to Atlantic City. It will be great to show them some of the new routines and new effects. You are been working with Dance With the Star’s pro Lacey Schwimmer. She did all of the choreography for me out in Las Vegas and she still does some choreography for me. Some of the dance routines that you will see in Atlantic City are her creations.

It sounds like you are going all out for your return. I wanted to come back and of course working for Masters of Illusion is a lot of fun. We shot the TV show with them over the summer and it will be airing hopefully this spring. Getting the opportunity to work with them is amazing not just with the whole production team, but to work with the other magicians, some that I grew up watching. It’s great to be sharing a stage with them and to be working with Gay Blackstone [Executive Producer of the TV show and the daughter of the great illusionist Harry Blackstone, Jr.]. She is a legend in magic. Does working with other illusionists create a ‘friendly rivalry’? There is no rivalry. We are just there to have a good time and put on a great show for the audience This is just one show but is there any chance to might return with a regular gig in Atlantic City? I would love to return. As of now I don’t have any specific dates when I will be there, but I would say within the next couple years I will be there with a full run of shows. What’s officially next for you? I’m doing this tour and then I’m doing a tour myself in Connecticut and Chicago and I’m going to California for the summer at Magic Mountain. I like being closer to the beach, but I wish I were on the East Coast. You are only here one night, but is there any particular place you want to go? Whenever I come back to Atlantic City I walk the Boardwalk and check out the beach and see what’s new. I love standing on the beach and looking out at the ocean. I’ve been in Las Vegas and it’s beautiful being on the Strip but you’re in the middle of the desert. New Jersey and the Jersey shore, once you’ve experienced it, it is a place you always want to come back to. It’s the place I call home. ■
