he richest and biggest star you’ve probably never heard of has his work cut out for him this weekend. Not only is Russell Peters performing in one of Atlantic City’s most important venues this weekend — Borgata’s 2,200-seat Event Center — but he’s doing two shows. On a holiday weekend. No pressure on the 43-year-old Canadianborn performer, who sets box office records wherever he appears, as long as it’s not in the United States. Yet despite his lack of mainstream recognition in this country, he’s still sold out Radio City Music Hall in New York several times and — as the first comic ever to play the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn — sold out that 20,000-seater, too. But when his name goes up on a marquee in his native Canada, or in countries from England to Dubai to Malaysia to South Africa to Australia to Lebanon, he’s box office gold. Last year, Peters — whose comedy forte is picking apart cultural stereotypes — raked in $19 million for just 64 shows. That’s about $300,000 per gig: roughly the same money Jerry Seinfeld earned from his comedy appearances. He’s been known, on occasion, to pocket $2 million dollars for just two nights of work in Australia, then hop over to Singapore and bank a million bucks for two shows. In 2012, when he earned $21 million, he was the third highest-paid comedy act in the world. Yet based on comments from his American comedy peers, Peters just might be the richest “comic’s comic” in the business — meaning his appeal in America is mostly limited to fellow comedians. Chris Rock, who’s no slouch in the funny business, called Peters “the most famous person nobody’s ever heard of.” Lisa Lampanelli took it one step further. “It’s like he has no real recognition [in America],” she said, “yet the guy has 10 Bentleys.” Peters was born in Toronto and comes from a multi-cultural Anglo-Indian ancestry, which could account for his popularity in Middle Eastern and Asian countries. He enjoys pointing out cultural barriers while he’s on stage, and then reducing them to their lowest common comedy denominator. “I don’t make the stereotypes,” he’s observed during his shows. “I just see them.” In 1992, three years after he began per-

forming stand-up at age 18, Peters received some career-changing advice from the late George Carlin, one of the pioneers of contemporary comedy. Carlin, whom Peters cites as his biggest comedic influence, encouraged him to get out on stage wherever and whenever possible. But it wasn’t until after one of his appearances on the Canadian TV comedy series Comedy Now went viral that Peters really caught fire. He quickly amassed fans from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. During a February interview with Forbes magazine, Peters really didn’t seem all that concerned about his lack of success with American audiences. He understands that he’s got all the elements needed to be a star, but somehow doesn’t fit the Hollywood “in crowd” mold. “I’d love to have a television show or do a bunch of movies, but [Hollywood] is like high school,” he said. “If you’re not in with the cool kids, then it doesn’t matter how funny you are. You’re just not in.” Peters’ brother and manager, Clayton Peters, was more succinct. He said the Hollywood establishment isn’t very forgiving or welcoming if a performer achieves success outside their sphere of influence. And unless a fledgling performer gets the nod of approval from someone at the top of the food chain, it isn’t easy to become a marketable success. Just because Peters isn’t part of the Hollywood system doesn’t mean he can’t succeed. He just needs to find production and development partners who also operate outside the traditional L.A. bubble. He seems to have found it in Netflix, which has agreed to stream Peters’ latest comedy special along with a four-part, behind-the-scenes documentary about his life on the road. If the Netflix deal helps him wedge his foot in the Hollywood door, then so be it. If it doesn’t, Peters isn’t going to lose sleep over it. He’s been knocking on that door for years, and nobody’s answered. “I guess the problem is that I’m an alpha male and I’ve got a leader-type mentality. I can’t really follow,” he said. “I’d love to be a part of something. But for now, I guess I’ll have to wait. I can’t stop touring. It’s my only income. I can’t become a slumlord, but I still gotta pay the mortgage.” n

ere it is, finally — Memorial Day Weekend and the beginning of the summer season. And I don’t have to tell you that for 42 years, Memories in Margate has been the spot. People from all over the country — the world! — have visited the Jersey shore to be a part of the magic of Memories. This year will be bigger and better than ever: With that winter behind us, people are coming down in droves. We’ll kick off the weekend Friday, May 23, with our happy hour at 4pm and live broadcast at 5 on Cruisin 92.1 — and we’ll go all weekend long live on Kool 98.3. Then on Sunday, May 25, hold on to your hats, ‘cause after we do The Geator, Frank and Friends from noon to 2pm on WOND 1400 radio and from 4-6pm at Memories, we’ll present the hottest new group, Low Cut Connie, who’ll have you rocking and rolling, sloppin’ and strollin’ as they do their thing. And remember, in the Geator Garden we’ll have those world-famous sandwiches from Paesano’s. But with all of that — let’s answer your questions. We loved Low Cut Connie at the Kimmel Center and can’t wait to see them at Memories this weekend. I saw on Facebook that you made an appearance on one of their albums. Was it a musical appearance? Can you give details? (MaryJo, Philadelphia) — I sang with the group on a song they recorded for their as yet untitled new album, which will be released it in a few months. The name of the song is “Low Cut Strut,”

and it will be one of the first singles off the record. What was Sinatra’s attitude toward Bobby Darin? (Donnie, Sea Isle) — Here’s a story. When Bobby released his album That’s All, which was all standards, it was a phenomenal success. Subsequently he was booked at the Copacabana for one week. The lines of people waiting to get in went around the block. He ended up doing three weeks. When columnist Earl Wilson asked him, “Where do you intend to go now?” he said, “I want to become bigger than Sinatra.” Bobby always claimed he was misquoted, but when Frank heard about it he said, “I do movies and night clubs. Bobby Darin does my prom dates.” But though they never were friends, both men admired each other. Bobby had the same swagger and attitude as Sinatra. Interestingly, Sinatra died on Darin’s birthday, May 14. I heard you play a song on your radio show. It was “If You See Bill,” but I don’t know who the artist is. It was ironic since it will be four years this week that I lost my husband of 29 years. Please let me know who sings that beautiful song. Thank you so much! (Carol Weikel, Macungie, Pa.) — That was the very first single by a very young Tammy (short for Thomasina) Montgomery, who was only 14 when she recorded it in 1961. But you may know her better by the name Berry Gordy gave her in 1965: Tammi Terrell. n

Handler: Hot ter tHan ever Touring behind her book Uganda Be Kidding Me, Chelsea handler visits Caesars May 25.

C

helsea Handler is scorching hot right now. She was rumored to take over the Late Show With David Letterman. That didn’t happen but there is word that she could still host a network late night chat show. Could Handler replace Craig Ferguson for a late, late time slot? Who knows? All anyone’s really sure of is that Handler — who’ll perform Sunday, May 25, at Caesars Circus Maximus Theater — is a hot commodity. However, it wasn’t that long ago that she was just another relative unknown Los Angeles based comic running from club to club for spots on the Sunset Strip. “She was just like the rest of us,” Handler’s comic peer and pal Jo Koy (who performed last week at the Borgata) told Atlantic City Weekly. “That was just over three years ago. Now she’s a star — but she’s still the same ol’ Chels.” Handler, 39 — who became a sensation thanks to her hit E! Entertainment chat show

Chelsea Lately, which commenced in July 2007 — has become an arena headliner. That’s an uncommon feat for a stand-up; Handler joins the likes of Andrew “Dice” Clay and Eddie Murphy, among the rare comedians to play airplane hangar-sized venues. “Yes, Andrew ‘Dice’ Clay, Eddie Murphy and I are always lumped together,” Handler cracked in a 2010 interview with AC Weekly. “I guess that’s just the way it is.” One thing she has in common with those two: She’s from New Jersey — Essex County, near the New York City border. She is fast-talking, quick-witted and doesn’t spare celebrities, or herself, from comic barbs. Handler’s self-deprecating humor is particularly appealing on her

hit show, live performances, and her bestselling books. “I think it’s so important to be honest as a performer,” Handler said. “I think that’s really important for me as an entertainer. I have no problem poking at myself. I tell it like it is whether I’m saying it or writing it.” Four of her books have hit the top spot on the New York Times bestseller list. “I have so much fun writing these books,” she said. “The thing is that I wrote my first book [2007’s My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands] before I had my TV show. There are celebrities like Tori Spelling, who are famous then write their book. I write my books from an honest place and just have a blast with them.”

Name: COMEDY STOP (00CMDY); Width: 10 in; Depth: 5.38 in; Color: Black plus three

Handler doesn’t just toss barbs at family and celebrities. She has ripped Hollywood bad girls Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears on more than one occasion, but her targets are actually fans. “I ran into Lindsay Lohan and she said ‘Hi, Chelsea, I love your show.’ When I ran into Britney, she said, ‘Chelsea, I really like your show.’ I think the key is that I’m not overly vicious. I’m just having fun.” It’s obvious that Handler constantly mixes business with pleasure, since she’s working on so many projects at once. How does she do it? “With a bottle of Grey Goose in one hand,” she quipped. n

MAY 22 - 29, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

I

f you’re a fan of Boardwalk Empire, you’ve probably imagined some romantic notion of Atlantic City in its Roaring ’20s glory, the names of the streets Nucky Thompson roamed echoing in your ears as if a torch singer were crooning the words off an antique Monopoly board. Well, good news for your boardwalk visit: There are several ways you can travel back in time to experience the reallife Nucky Johnson’s legacy while you’re visiting the sin-sational seaside resort where the booze once flowed in secret back rooms. You can start by renting a Rolling Chair on the Boardwalk. This hand-pushed mode of transportation has nearly as rich a history as the Boardwalk itself — the Rolling Chairs have been around since the 1880s. You can bet Nucky used them when he left his apartment at the Ritz Carlton (which is now a condominium). Or for a real taste of the era, hop aboard the Roaring ’20s Trolley Tour. The fully guided tour lasts nearly four hours and includes lunch at The Irish Pub, where you’ll be introduced to the secret speakeasy entrance. (Every Thursday from May 23 through Nov 14, 10:15am-2:30pm. 1-800-487-6559.) Want to get really in depth with Atlantic City’s history and its heritage — and see new

exhibits of fine art while you’re at it? Pay a visit to the Noyes Art Garage of Stockton College. The shiny, 21st-century building in the middle of town houses relics from bygone days and more, including the Noyes-Stockton Gallery, the Atlantic City Art Center, and an annex of the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey, which features a prized collection of unique artifacts specific to the history of African Americans in and around the Atlantic City region. (Located at the Wave Parking Garage, 2200 Fairmount Ave., at Mississippi Ave. Free admission. Hours: Wed.-Sun. 10am-6pm.) Another place where you can step up into history is a heart-healthy climb — 228 steps! — to the top of the Absecon Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey. It was open in 1957, long before the rumrunners were sneaking their booze onto the beach, and still features its original first-order Fresnel Lens. Admission includes parking as well as access to the Keeper’s House Museum. (31 S. Rhode Island Ave. $7 to climb; $5 for seniors 65-plus; $4 for children ages 4-12; Active military & kids under 4 free. Dogs are welcome on the grounds. Sept.-June, Thurs.Mon. 11am-4pm; July-Aug., open daily

10am-5pm. 449-1360.) The Atlantic City Historical Museum at Garden Pier (New Jersey Ave. at the Boardwalk) is closed for repairs at the moment but is expected to reopen sometime this summer. The Museum showcases a remarkable collection of historical photographs; as it turns out, sometimes you find the most colorful scenes unfolding in black-and-white images. 3475839; atlanticcityexperience.org. If you want some Atlantic City history along with a fine meal, both the Knife & Fork Inn and Dock’s Oyster House have roots that stretch way back in the town’s history. Dock’s opened in 1897 and the Knife & Fork in 1912; the Knife & Fork still retains hidden cabinets built underneath certain seats where liquor could be stored during Prohibition. The best place for a historic stay just might be the newly reopened Claridge Hotel. On the outside, it looks just like it did when it first opened in 1930 — the last of the grand hotels to open in that era in Atlantic City and nicknamed “The Skyscraper By the Sea.” The address is straight out of that Monopoly set, too: Indiana Ave. and Park Place. Marilyn Monroe stayed here. (For info on reservations, 844-224-7386. Claridge.com.) n

MAY 22 - 29, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

O

cean City takes its motto as “America’s Favorite Family Resort” very seriously. Hey, it has to: The yearround population in the town swells from 11,700 in the winter to an estimated 115,000 to 130,000 during the summer months! With all those extra bodies to keep content and entertained, Ocean City’s vacation excitement goes into high gear Memorial Day weekend and stays that way through Labor Day. Once summer arrives, there are daily free events and entertainment throughout town — Funtastic Tuesdays on Asbury Ave.; Farmer’s Market at the Tabernacle Grounds on Wednesday; Family Night Thursdays on the boardwalk; Character Night Parade Sunday on the boardwalk — and a seemingly endless collection of kid-friendly shops, popular boardwalk eats, miniature golf courses, arcades and three amusement parks. All this before you even factor in the enticing ocean and beach. Most prognosticators are calling for a big summer season after the horrendous, snowfilled winter we put up with. Admit it — you and your family can’t wait for the chance to dip your toes in the ocean after picking up some warm cinnamon sugar donuts at Brown’s (St. Charles Place & Boardwalk).

Piers, ArcAdes, Mini-Golf

Ocean City has three amusement piers. Gillian’s Wonderland Pier on 6th St. and the Boardwalk is perfect for the younger kids with 31 rides. Open Fri.-Sun. in May and Mon. May 26; open daily June-Sept. 7. (399-7082; gillians.com.)

Playland’s castaway cove has a pirate theme and a choice of 32 rides for both younger and older children. Open Sat.-Sun. in May plus May 26 and May 30; Daily from June to Sept. 14; Fri.-Sun. Sept. 19-28. (10th St. & boardwalk. 399-4751; oceancityfun.com.) Boardwalk Adventures Water Park, Mini Golf and climbing, Plymouth Place &

the Boardwalk, has challenging slides for the older kids and activities for the younger tots. Opens Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-26. 399-0483; ocwaterpark.com. Ocean City has eight miniature golf courses, most of them along the boardwalk, with Pirate island as you enter town at 9th St. and Haven. The town’s most popular arcades are Jilly’s Arcade (12th St. & Boardwalk, 399-2814), Hollywood Arcade (802 Boardwalk, 391-7667) and Aquaport Arcade & Billiards ( 3349 Asbury Ave., 398-0072).

Music And More The ocean city Pops at the Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and the Boardwalk, opens its season June 22 with a concert by Bobby Rydell and runs through Sept. 14. Highlights include the musical Guys and Dolls (July 8-10); Our Three Tenors (July 20); the best of Glenn Miller and Harry James (July 30); The White Cliffs of Dover: Winston Churchill and the War Years (Aug. 17) and Grammy winning singer Diane Schuur (Aug. 27). Prices range from $10/$15 to $25/$30. 525-9248 (summer) or 525-9300; ocpops.org. The ocean city Theatre company is co-staging Guys and Dolls and the musical

The Monday night concert series at the Music Pier kicks-off June 30 and includes The Bacon Brothers (July 21), G Love and Special Sauce (Aug. 4) and the Indigo Girls (Aug. 11). $35 ($37 for Indigo Girls). All shows at 7:30pm. 525-9300; ocnj.us. The Moorlyn family Theatre not only shows first run movies, but presents live shows in the summer. Oh What A Night! A Musical Tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons will be presented in July and August, Thurs.-Sat. 8pm, $25. David & The Giant is a new musical based on the biblical tale with singing, dancing and puppetry. Scheduled for July and August, show times are Sun. 3pm and Wed. 10:30am. $10. 837 Moorlyn Terrace & the boardwalk. 399-0006; moorlynfamilytheatre.org.

BoArdWAlk MuncHies The smell of fried goodies permeates the air as you stroll the Boardwalk looking for your favorite type of French fries — traditional, waffle or butterfly fries. A burger, hotdog, slice of pizza or a pork roll sandwich would go great with those fries and for dessert, the choices are endless including Johnson’s Popcorn, fudge from The fudge kitchen, kohr Bros. frozen custard (the orange sher-

bert twist is divine) and of course shriver’s salt Water Taffy with 70 delicious flavors.

MAY 22 - 29, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

Edwin Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (fws.gov/refuge/Edwin_B_Forsythe ) is

part of the most active bird-migration routes on the Atlantic Coast, encompassing about 50,000 federally protected acres zoned for not just for bird watching and nature photography, but also hunting, fishing, paddle sports, tubing, hiking and all things outdoors. Even more impressive from a nature-lover’s perspective is one of the most expansive stretches of undisturbed wildlife anywhere in the nation, the 1.1-million-acre Pine Barrens (njpinebarrens.com). The Pines encompass part of seven South Jersey counties and include three state forests, the historic Batsto Village (part of the Wharton State Forest), and the federally regulated Maurice and Great Egg Harbor river systems. Need more suggestions for savoring Mother Nature? There’s Cape May Point State Park, Corson’s Inlet State Park,

the Strathmere Nature Area, and guided sea-life tours and beach excursions in Sea Isle City — all located in Cape May County. Closer to A.C. is Lake Lenape State Park in Mays Landing and Birch Grove Park in Northfield (go to nj.gov and click the “things to do in NJ” link for more). With naturists leaning more toward a more rudimentary lifestyle, there are many campgrounds in the A.C. area including one nestled in the Pines. The Atlantic City North Campground (campacn.com) is actually about 30 minutes north of A.C. in Tuckerton. It features designated areas for recreational vehicles and tent camping, or airconditioned cabins available to rent for those less inclined to rough it. The Winding River Campground (windingrivercamping.com) is located on the Egg Harbor River in Mays Landing, and the Shady Pines RV Resort (shadypinesrvresort.com ) is in Galloway Township and features among its amenities a 3,000-square-foot fenced-in dog run. Most campgrounds have designated areas for barbecuing, bath houses and retail areas for supplies like ice and propane. Winding River also offers canoe, tube and kayak rentals. Midway between Atlantic City and Cape May is the

Driftwood Camping Resort (driftwoodcampingresorts.com) in Clermont, which has 700 campsites on 200 acres ranging from simple tent sites to full hook-up RV sites with picnic tables, fireplaces and electric service. Most shore towns offer bicycle, kayak, personal-water-craft (PWC) or small boat rentals. PWC and boating rentals may require certain safety certification and operation is age restricted. The best suggestion would be to check with a particular municipality’s chamber of commerce (any real estate office will direct you there) for boating and bicycle rentals. For the outdoorsy day-tripper looking for something unique to do, check out the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine —a government-authorized operation that rescues marine animals and gives the public opportunities to see the rehabilitation process. The MMSC includes a Sea Life Museum on site that has scheduled guided tours (visit mmsc.org). Brigantine is also the only South Jersey beach town that offers four-wheel drive permits to access its north-end and part of its south-end (dubbed “The Cove”) beaches. Permits are $175 per 4WD vehicle and are good until the end of the

year. Vehicle owners 60 and over pay $85 for a permit. They are available at the Brigantine Community Center (265 42nd Street). Across the Absecon Inlet in Gardner’s Basin, guests can take back-bay sightseeing or dolphin-watching tours on party boats, or take back-bay fishing trips from A.C. (highrollerfishing.com), Brigantine (fishfindercharters.com), Margate (jessieofishing.com) or Somers Point (dukeofluke.com) in Atlantic County. Outdoorsmen who savor their creature comforts tend to enjoy the bed-and-breakfast lifestyle, and South Jersey alternatives are numerous. Some of the more exceptional B&Bs in our area include the Chelsea Pub and Inn in A.C. (chelseapubandinn.com), the Inn at the Irish Pub in A.C. (theirishpub.com), the Carisbrooke Inn in Ventnor (carisbrookeinn. com), the Scarborough Inn in Ocean City (scarboroughinn.com), and well over 30 Victorian-style bed-and-breakfasts in Cape May. Among Cape May’s more impressive offerings are the Virginia Hotel, with 24 unique rooms in a restored 1879 building, and the admittedly larger Congress Hall, where 19thcentury U.S. Presidents once vacationed. I

t takes a certain kind of town to earn the nickname “The World’s Playground.” As Atlantic City has evolved over the decades, one thing has stayed constant: its allure as a prime gathering spot for single friends seeking a weekend of fun. Heading into summer 2014, as footloose-and-fancy-free vacationers make their way to A.C. both solo and in posses, there are so many entertainment options to choose between, there’s bound to be something to please all comers. Let’s start with the core of single nightlife: the watering holes. The 21st century brought beach bars to Atlantic City, so these days it’s the regular summertime custom to sip drinks and listen to live music al fresco during the sunny hours before heading out to A.C.’s copious nightclubs later at night — popular hot spots like MIXX and mur. mur at Borgata (borgatanightlife.com), HQ and Ivan Kane’s Royal Jelly at Revel (revelresorts.com), Providence (providenceclubac.com) and Anthem (anthemlounge. com) at Tropicana, Scores (scores-ac.com) at the Taj Mahal, Dusk (duskac.com/) at Caesars, The Pool (thepoolafterdark.com) at Harrah’s and Haven (havenac.com) at Golden Nugget.

This summer the largest of the beach bars, at Trump Plaza, will be reimagined under the name Bar A’s Beach Bar and operated by a company that has long run a Belmar beachfront hot spot called Bar Anticipation. Look for some unique entertainment to unfold there, and enjoy wait service in a 10,000-square-foot cordoned-off section of the sand in front of the bar. There’s hardly a shortage of diversified eateries in A.C., but perhaps more important to singles is A.C.’s plethora of places with first-rate libations. In keeping with the skyrocketing popularity of craft beers today, Firewaters (tropicana.net) at the Tropicana has about 150 craft beers available, and places like the Mussel Bar (musselbar.com) at Revel, A.C. Bottle Company (acbottlecompany.com) and The Vagabond (vagabondac.com) in West A.C., and others have capitalized on the craft-beer craze with some outstanding selections. If beer’s not your beverage, all four Caesars Entertainment properties (Caesars, Bally’s, Harrah’s Resort and Showboat) have revamped their summer drink menus this year to include such concoctions as the Belvedere Strawberry Martini, Ginger Mojito, Ulti-

mate Rum Punch, and the Raspberry Peach Margarita. Winding down from a night of partying can be made infinitely easier with a revitalizing spa treatment, and A.C. rates highly here too. Among the more outstanding casino spas are the 32,000 square-foot Exhale (exhalespa. com) at Revel, Spa Toccare and the Waterclub’s Immersion Spa at Borgata (theborgata.com/spas), bluemercury (bluemercury. com ) at the Trop, Qua Spa (caesarsac.com ) at Caesars and Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa (reddoorspas.com) at Harrah’s. Having access to a multitude of alternatives without the need to travel has long been a high priority for the single set, and places like The Quarter at Tropicana (tropicana. net/the-quarter ) made that a reality. There’s also an abundance of shopping, dining and entertainment options at The Pier Shops (thepiershopsatcaesars.com) at Caesars, The Walk retail outlets (tangeroutlet.com) at midtown A.C., and a ton of fun stuff going on in the summertime at Gardner’s Basin in the inlet section of town. Singles who enjoy scheduling entire weekends around single events will find plenty on tap again this year, much of it easy on the wal-

let. Besides headline acts, free concert series abound, including nine shows on the beach and Boardwalk sponsored by the CRDA, the annual Chicken Bone Beach Jazz Series every Thursday night in July and August on the Boardwalk, and the A.C. Free Public Library’s International Night Series (acfpl. org) every Wednesday night in July and August on the Boardwalk. A.C. will also host one of the biggest fireworks-pyrotechnics shows in the nation on July 4, and country superstar Blake Shelton is scheduled to perform on the A.C. beach on July 31 free of charge, as is Lady Antebellum on Aug. 3. Casino hotels often run package deals on overnight stays in conjunction with headline acts in their showrooms. Singles in town for shows would be advised to keep an eye out for these and other deals on room rates. Rates fluctuate with demand, but all casino hotels offer rooms with exceptional views and luxury amenities, as does A.C.’s only “boutique” hotel, The Chelsea (thechelsea-ac.com). The Chelsea has about eight different room packages — including the “Rockstar Suite” on its top and 20th floor, where you can feel like a million bucks whether you’re flying solo or, you know, not. n

Cab, which has become one of the most respected manufacturers of melancholy pop in the business. Months after the VH1 special, the band’s brilliant album Plans dropped and folks started hearing about the band, which was reduced by some as just a “twee-pop” (sort of childish) act. But Gibbard is without a doubt a significant artist, adept at making literate, reflective music. “Crooked Teeth,” “Your Heart Is An Empty Room” and “Someday You Will Be Loved” are some of the gentle, pretty and provocative songs that have touched the misfits and outsiders. It’s been three years since Death Cab’s last album, the oddly sunny Codes And Keys. Since the tour behind that album, Gibbard’s marriage to actress Zooey Deschanel ended. Perhaps the new material will be depressing and at times painful, like those Death Cab For Cutie has best become known for? Frankly, many of the band’s stauchest fans found it a bit strange hearing Gibbard sing such upbeat, effervescent songs like “Morning Morning” and “Stay Young, Go Dancing.” Will Death Cab preview new songs from its latest album in A.C.? Hard to say: The band hasn’t played a date since last September, at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle. The band’s tour has yet to start and it’s only doing eight dates. It wouldn’t be surprising to experience the band work out some material on the road — but there’s only one way to find out. n

eath Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard isn’t talking at the moment. The sensitive singer/ guitarist/keyboardist is waiting until the band’s forthcoming album drops later in the year. His dreamy music ought to speak just fine, though, when Death Cab plays Sunday, May 25, at Revel’s Ovation Hall. The group’s got some history in Atlantic City: Back in May 2005, the executive producer of a VH1 special saluting Elvis Costello tabbed Fiona Apple, Billie Joe Armstrong and Death Cab for the special. That show, at Trump Taj Mahal, saw Death Cab joining Costello on the tunes “Accidents Will Happen,” “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” and “Kinder Murder.” The concert was solid — but paled compared to the after party, which featured everyone but the reclusive Costello. Armstrong hung out with his wife and then pre-pubescent sons. The enigmatic Apple was spending time with a cute seven-year old girl, posing for photos and explaining how nervous she was performing with the iconic Costello. And then there was Death Cab for Cutie, the foursome (also including guitarist Chris Walla, bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Jason McGerr) standing around taking it all in. Costello’s supporting cast were all young, talented musicians about to take off. Looking back, the artists selected were fine choices for what are typically forgettable VH1 specials. But who would ever guess that Armstrong and Green Day would have a huge Broadway hit musical American Idiot (based on a Green Day album of the same name) to their credit. The adventurous Apple has become one of the most admired singer-songwriters. And then there is Death

ith the summer season getting underway, it seems apropos to check in with some of the shore region’s most famed food providers. And what better place to commence than in Ocean City? Essentially the antithesis of Atlantic City, America’s Greatest Family Resort definitively shot down a proposed BYOB ordinance just two years ago. The last few months have been equally eventful here, with legal ramifications surrounding the owners of iconic Manco and Manco, and the sale of one of its biggest Boardwalk competitors, Prep’s Pizzeria and Dairy Bar, after nearly five decades under the same family. While the adjudication of the former will likely be drawn out, it’s not expected to affect operations of the hugely popular Manco’s three boardwalk locations at 8th, 9th and 12th streets, nor its mainland outpost in Somers Point. Prep’s, meanwhile, founded by Vineland entrepreneur Joe Rueben and wife Catherine in 1965, and run by various combinations of their offspring throughout that nearly 50-year stretch, was recently sold. One of the very best pizzerias anywhere, quirky Prep’s was always our choice in the fiercely spirited local rivalry between themselves and Manco’s. We hope new ownership will opt to change nothing about the anachronistic little eatery, easily identifiable by its familiar “Gator” mascot hovering above the Boardwalk at 10th Street. Ocean City also features a pair of superb bakeries, one a year-round tradition and the other a venerable seasonal treat. Ward’s, located mid-block on Asbury Avenue between 7th and 8th streets, has been the downtown’s bakery of choice for over 75 years. A full service shop providing a wide swath of cookies, pastries, breads and cakes, Ward’s is most noted for cinnamon buns and butter cookies. You’d also be

advised not to miss the decadent “cobblestone” loaves of bread — deep golden, this loaf is like a brioche on steroids. Called “cobblestone” for its top, dented by application of butter during baking, the overall result is a crunchy texture and rich, intense flavor. For residents and visitors to Ocean City’s scenic, pristine south end, Dot’s (3148 Asbury) has been an Easter-toThanksgiving tradition since 1947. Dot’s also produces, in our humble opinion, the very finest cream-filled doughnut to be found anywhere on the planet. Trust us, we’ve done the research and crunched the numbers. Soft and pliable, the tender pastry is packed with cream filling worthy of a classically trained French chef. Other favorites here include a tangy, surprising lemon-filled doughnut, heavenly Boston cream pie, and a vibrant variety of fruit Danish. Five miles south, you’ll encounter one of the Jersey shore’s oldest and most revered establishments. Busch’s, at the intersection of 87th Street and Landis Avenue, in the southernmost Townsends Inlet section of Sea Isle City, has been providing prodigious portions of praiseworthy seafood since 1882. Specifically known for a regional specialty, she-crab soup, served only Sunday and Tuesday, the block-and-half-long compound was the final remaining remnant of an earlier era

in Jersey shore dining. Rumors of Busch’s demise, rife even prior to the arrival of Superstorm Sandy, was followed by fifth-generation owner/operators Kim and Al Schettig significantly downsizing for summer 2014. Busch’s now plans a take-out-only facility offering a brief menu of longtime favorites, including, of course, that she-crab soup. Finally, what could be more all-American than hot dogs? The very finest to be found anywhere at the shore remains in North Wildwood, at Maui’s Dog House (8th Street and New Jersey Avenue). Offering house-made proprietary products, Maui’s has served up an outrageous variety of dogs, Angus burgers, hand-cut fries, chicken and sausage sandwiches since 1999. We’d personally recommend the Chicago dog, traditionally dressed with spicy mustard, raw onions, pickles, peppers, tomatoes and celery salt; the Italian version, a blend of sliced onion, green peppers, potatoes and garlic sautéed in white wine and topped with extra sharp provolone; or a Sacrilegious Drunk Horse, with tear-inducing horseradish mustard, onions, ground beef, chili sauce and beer-soaked kraut. Maui’s motto speaks volumes about the core values inherent here — “This is not fast food, its fresh food cooked as fast as we can make it.” On that note: Welcome, summer. We really missed you. n

ummertime at the cinema is defined by an endless parade of would-be blockbusters featuring favorite superheroes and other action stars; a healthy heaping of all-ages flicks to entice the kids; a good comedy or two, if we’re lucky — and maybe, just maybe, one juicy, solid drama that bucks the bigger-louderfaster trend. As I look out over the seemingly endless parade of films scheduled to march into theaters from now through Labor Day, I spy 10 films I have particularly high hopes for.

X-Men: Days of Future Past When the X-Men are all together, the result is usually pretty spectacular. This film is an all-star combo featuring the stars of the original X-Men films including Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan and the younger gang from the excellent 2011 reboot with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. Toss in time travel plus original director Bryan Singer back in charge, and X-Men: DOFP feels like it should be a winner. May. 23.

Edge of Tomorrow

The Fault in Our Stars Here is an adaptation of a young adult novel by John Green that doesn’t involve vampires or a dystopian future. Instead, it’s about the real pain of teenagers dealing with cancer and first love, starring the amazingly talented Shailene Woodley as Hazel, the cancer-stricken teen reluctant to fall in love with cancer survivor Augustus (Ansel Elgort). Co-written by Margate native Scott Neustader, the film opens June 6.

his dragon pal Toothless go on a new adventure that includes meeting his long-lost mother (Cate Blanchett). Gerard Butler also returns as Hiccup’s dad. June 13.

Tammy It’s the casting that’s intriguing in this road trip comedy about the title character, played by Melissa McCarthy (who co-wrote the script) who takes her alcoholic grandmother (Susan Sarandon) on the road. July 2.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

Jersey Boys

I loved the first film enough to put a sequel on my most anticipated list. Dragon whisperer Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and

on the hit Broadway show. Eastwood hasn’t flexed his musical side since he directed Bird in 1988. The film stars John Lloyd Young who won a Tony for playing Valli on Broadway. June 20.

Begin Again This was one of my favorite films from last year’s Toronto Film Festival. The quirky musical dramedy is the latest effort from writer, director, musician John Carney, best known for the musical Once. It’s a lovely slice of musical life starring Keira Knightley as a singer-songwriter and Mark Ruffalo as a down-on-his-luck music producer. July 4. n

In this sci-fi version of Groundhog Day, director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) puts Tom Cruise through his paces as a soldier who gets to see alien invaders kill him over and over again since he dies, wakes up and the day starts all over again.
