Seascape & Song the Beth Tinnon Piano Duo evokes a classic supper- club vibe — with a panor amic view BY R AY SCHWEIBERT

ike other artists in high demand during the summer months, Nashville-born singer/ songwriter Beth Tinnon never takes a vacation when the pickings for prime gigs are at their peak. Her plate was already pretty full when she got word of an idea the recently renovated Blue Water Grille wanted to try out on the seventh floor of the Flagship Resort, overlooking the Absecon Inlet and Brigantine island. Fashioned around a Saturday night supper-club format, it was similar to a jazz gig Tinnon used to do at the former Top of the Trop — a sort of throwback format that later inspired Tinnon to write her multi-faceted musical called A Night at the Speakeasy that, thus far, has made two successful runs at A.C.’s Dante Hall. Teaming with pianist Jeff Turner — part of the talented quartet that backed her up in Speakeasy — the Beth Tinnon Piano Duo plays a free gig every Saturday night (7-10pm) through September at Blue Water Grille. Their repertoire covers artists like Sinatra, Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Billy Joel, Elton John, Lionel Richie, and sees romantic numbers from a compilation CD Tinnon made occasionally tossed in. “Sometimes I’ll mix in some adult-contemporary and pick it up with a Michael Jackson, George Benson or a Quincy Jones kind of arrangement, the kind of music you might hear on light-rock stations,” says Tinnon, a five-time “Casino Lounge Act of the Year” winner in AC Weekly’s annual Reader’s Choice Nightlife Awards. “We start at 7 so it’s before the sun goes down, and you can see all the boats coming back in. It’s just like the Top of the Trop but not so high up, so you really get a nice view of everything going on down below. “They made it a bit more upscale and brought in a new general manager [Samantha Beahon] and a wonderful chef [Jack Eck, also a judge for the past three years on the Food Network TV show Chopped] with a great menu — it’s like a dinner theater-type show you might see at the Rainbow Room in New York [a supper club on Rockefeller Center’s 64th floor that opened after the repeal of Prohibition in 1934]. It’s the only thing like it in Atlantic City, and I think Atlantic City needs a room like that — a place where concierges can send people who might be looking for a nice sunset with a dinner show-type atmosphere.” n

IT SAYS ‘ONLY ONCE’ REMINISCES OF THE ROCKY FELLERS AND MARY LOU METZGER — BUT A NEW GEATOR BOOK WILL HAVE TO WAIT
O
I read that in the 1970s Mary Lou Metzger of The Lawrence Welk Show had a bit part in the movie you were in, Cycad. Do you recall ever getting a glimpse of Mary Lou? (Josh, Toledo, Ohio) — I do remember her. She had a bit part and also was a stand-in for the leading lady, an English actress whose name unfortunately escapes me right now. She was unknown at that time but was about to make her debut appearance on Lawrence Welk. I occasionally catch a glimpse of her on PBS, where she hosts reruns of the show.
When are you going to come out with another book? (Allen Horan, Somers
Point) Great beach read, so much info. Read full last year, now I just pick up and reread chapters. Are you gonna “rock” twice? (Don Moore, West Chester) — I would love to, but unfortunately my schedule at this point allows me no time to sit and put it all together. I loved writing You Only Rock Once, and there is so much more that I want to share with an audience involving the wonderful people in my life, including the fans who have been a part of this wonderful ride. I hope one day to be able to sit down and put it all into words once again. By the way: You Only Rock Once was just released as an audiobook, narrated by actor Andy Caploe with yours truly doing the introduction. You can get it from Audible.com.
What was the name of the group that sang the song “Killer Joe” in the early ’60s and whatever happened to them? Were they a one-hit wonder? (Charlotte, Ocean City) — That was the Rocky Fellers, made up of four brothers and their father. They had appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and subsequently were signed by Scepter Records. “Killer Joe” was a Top 20 hit in 1963 that paid tribute to a legendary New York dance instructor called Killer Joe Piro. The group followed it up with another novelty song, “Like the Big Boys Do,” that mainly got play in the New York area. Their lead singer passed away, but I understand that two of the Maligmat brothers moved to Hawaii, where they continue to perform. n Got a question for Jerry? Write AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. More info on Jerry’s appearances is at www.geator.net.

im and Liv Nervo share more than just the same birthday, the same parents, and the same cover-girl good looks. The Australian twin sisters — known collectively in show-biz as simply Nervo — also share the twofold talents of being among the best songwriting duos in the still-skyrocketing world of electronic dance music, and the most skilled and sought-after DJs/live performers on the international EDM nightclub circuit. Nervo’s Atlantic City debut was at Revel’s HQ Nightclub in late September 2013, and tickets sold out nearly as fast as they were made available. On June 14, and marking the first major act following fellow Aussie and EDM superstar Tommy Trash’s kickoff of the venue’s summer season, HQ Beach Club hosted the sisters for a 90-minute show that was also packed to the hilt. On Friday, June 27, Nervo returns to HQ Nightclub a day after headlining the famed Hakkasan nightclub in Las Vegas, and the night before a gig in Toronto. They then embark on a whirlwind tour of Europe with stops in Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, Moscow, Hungary, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland. The Nervo twins were just teens when their songwriting skills began to get recognition. While working for an outfit in Sweden in their early 20s, they collaborated on the song “When Love Takes Over” for David Guetta and Kelly Rowland that topped global charts, won a Grammy award, and shot the sisters into the big time. In 2013, Billboard deemed “When Love Takes Over” as the number-one dancepop collaboration of all time. “I guess we’ve always kind of been involved [in EDM], straight out of high school,” the sisters told Beatport magazine. “We loved going to clubs and raves in Australia. When we started wanting to make our own music, we just leaned more and more into the world of EDM that we’d become so involved in …” The sisters have written smash singles for such artists as Ke$ha, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Armin van Buuren, Rachel Stevens, Ashley Tisdale, and the Pussycat Dolls. Their self-penned, self-performed singles “Irresistible” and “Hold On” reached number-one status on the UK Club and Billboard U.S. Dance charts, respectively, and their songs “Not Taking This No More” and “Revolution” had longstanding stays at the top of Beatport’s Electro-House chart. “It was never the focus to perform those Guetta or Ke$ha songs ourselves, so we were thrilled that they did well for them. Those tracks also gave us a lot of confidence to release records under our own artist name, which is what we’re doing now.” Nervo tells Galore magazine that the pair was accepted into the Opera Australia Academy, widely considered among the finest opera schools in the world, but opted instead to pursue an EDM career. “We studied music all the way through [high] school, so by the end of school we knew classical music was not something we wanted to pursue professionally, or rather we were more inspired by modern digital
music making. I wouldn’t take back our training, as it taught us a lot and started our journey in music, [but] our parents thought we were crazy when we wanted to pursue electronic music. Now they’re happy about it.” Nervo is no anomaly in HQ’s talent lineup. Revel has brought in the biggest names in EDM since opening the club in April 2012 (HQ Beach Club came along last summer). The catalyst behind that trend has been Neil Moffitt and his Angel Management Group (AMG), which operates nightclubs worldwide, including 15 in Las Vegas. “People forget that 10 years ago there was very little nightlife in [the Las Vegas] market, and that has changed significantly,” Moffitt told Atlantic City Weekly in 2012. “[Now] people come from all over the world to get inspiration from Vegas and, similar to Atlantic City nightlife, this whole new audience wasn’t necessarily just coming to gamble. They were coming to eat,
have a good time, get away from it all … and the only way to bring in [a younger demographic] is through content.” The young crowds have certainly come out for Nervo. “Normally we open our DJ sets with one of our own records, and the second that happens and you see the hands go up, it’s game on,” Liv says on Nervo’s Web site (nervomusic.com). “We were those people in the crowd for so many years,” adds Mim. “To be playing on the same bills with some of those artists now is just electrifying.” n

floor. “That’s all in fun,” Aoki said. “Why not have fun and just take it to another level? When a DJ is out there it should be anything but boring.” Still, the bottom line for Aoki is always the music itself. “You’ll see that I’ve grown as an artist and producer,” Aoki said. “You can’t help but grow when you’re working with so many different artists.” Aoki, who is at his best when delivering sprawling, nihilistic cuts, is all about music all the time. When he’s not creating by his lonesome or with a variety of artists, Aoki is always wearing his cap as head honcho of Dim Mak. “Music is my passion and it doesn’t end with my albums or live shows,” Aoki said. “I put a lot of energy into my live shows. I want them to be regarded as events. I want the shows to be amazing. But after the shows end I’m thinking about my label. I’m the total A&R guy at my label. I’m the one who decides who to sign and what to release. I’m about music 24 hours a day. It’s all consuming but that’s alright. There’s other stuff that wouldn’t be so good for me to be consumed by.” n

ou never know what DJ Steve Aoki will do. The President and founder of indie label Dim Mak Records likes to take chances and collaborate. Rivers Cuomo of Weezer fame, Dutch DJ Tiesto, Zuper Blahq aka will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas and Peaches are just some of the disparate recording artists that he’s worked with since 2007. “I’m all for diversity,” Aoki told Atlantic City Weekly via phone this month from his Los Angeles home. “I’m not into boundaries. Collaborations are a mutual thing. People I reach out to have to be interested in working with me. It works both ways. Each party has to have the respect and time to work with each other.” Quite a few artists have made time for Aoki. Some of the talent, who have joined Aoki, 36, in the studio are venerable hardcore punks, Exploited, rapper Kid Cudi and pop-rock drummer Travis Barker of Blink 182 fame. “I like to mix it up,” Aoki said. “I like going punk. I love the guitar riffs from Exploited. How cool is it to put something like that in there? I used to be a singer so I love the punk rock vocal thing.” Aoki, who will DJ throughout the day at Revel, is perhaps the most engaging DJ on the circuit. He’s sprayed champagne over the crowd. Aoki has tossed cake at fans and will occasionally ride a raft on the dance

dam Duritz speaks in the same tone and manner as he sings. The Counting Crows singer has perfect enunciation and occasionally stretches out words. At times, Duritz sounds as tortured in conversation as he does in song. During a 90-minute chat the thoughtful and deliberate entertainer proves to be an impressively accommodating subject, which shouldn’t be surprising since he has always gone the extra yard as a songwriter. Since Counting Crows, which will perform Saturday at the Borgata, went through the stratosphere 20 years ago with their debut album, August And Everything After. Duritz has delivered as a songwriter and as an entertainer, who is adept at engaging the audience. Duritz goes back to the band’s early days to talk about breathing rarified air, which was also consumed by former labelmate Kurt Cobain, CC’s highwater mark, Recovering the Satellites and why he is his band’s benevolent dictator.
to run with it and it went over very well.
For many of your peers, vivid imagery is superfluous when it comes to lyrics. However, you are the last guy who would rhyme self and shelf. Counting Crows songs are always filled with the gory details. Why do you labor over every word? Because I try not to ever take a short-
Benevolent dictator. Fortunately I am the leader, since I don’t think any of my bandmates, who I love like brothers, would be any good at leading a band. They’re great at what they do, and we keep it at that. Everybody’s happy. Most of the band has been with me for all of these years — but not just the band. Most of our crew has been with us since nearly day one. We must be doing something right.
cut. You can’t just settle as a songwriter. That would drive me crazy. I can’t write a lyric that is just “I met her and fell in love.” That’s not enough for me. Instead I’ll write, “When You Look Across a Crowded Room/See the Way the Light Attaches to a Girl.”
That’s from “A Long December,” which is one of the many standout tracks from Recovering the Satellites. Most of your casual fans go on about your debut, which established the band, but Satellites really feels like your initial album to me. I agree. That album feels like our debut album. We needed a lead guitarist, and we added the right one in Dan — and we added the right drummer in Ben Mize. It all made sense to me but not the record company. They were less than thrilled that I asked the Pixies producer, Gil Norton, to produce us but I thought Gil Norton was a genius and I was right.
That’s interesting that DGC, which was
But when it came time for the band to showcase a song on television, you went with “Round Here,” instead of “Mr. Jones.” Why? I wanted to go with “Round Here”when we were asked early on to play Saturday Night Live. That led to a huge fight (with DGC). But it was the right move. Our album moved 40 spots a week for 5 weeks. We went from 213 on the charts to number 6 in just over a month.
I remember seeing you guys in Hershey during the Satellites tour and you turned the light and playful “Mr. Jones” into a dirge. But I think we’ve turned every song of ours one time or another into a dirge. Some fans might not like it but I don’t think the fans always know what’s best.
You’re the one who calls the shots in the band. Are you a stern taskmaster like James Brown or a benevolent dictator?
the apex of corporate rock cool in 1993, wasn’t down with Norton since the roster was filled with integrity acts, such as Nirvana, The Sundays and Sonic Youth. We were on this boutique label, and if you sold 100,000 albums that was a home run. But then you had bands like ours and Nirvana selling like crazy. The Sundays had a weird record that went big. It was scary for a lot of us. I know it took a toll on Kurt Cobain. Kurt was a really nice guy. He was a weird guy, but a nice guy. It was harder to live with the success in his head than it was for me. But I could relate. It is weird to be really successful. All of a sudden, the world is at your doorstep. All these people who don’t know you love you and want to dress like you. It’s fucking bizarre. It scared the fuck out of me.
What would you compare it to? It was like one day, you’re living an average everyday existence and the next day you wake up and you’re on Mars. There is no gravity. You have to learn how to walk again and you’re not sure
you’re going to survive. Kurt didn’t make it. I think the advantage I had over him was that I was 29 when our first record came out. I was a little older than him but I was out of my mind. Kurt was more vulnerable than me. The record label wasn’t down with all of our choices.
But they couldn’t do much since you were smart enough to avoid those big signing bonuses in favor of creative control. We signed for very little so we could have creative freedom. We could have had a bidding war but we signed for a small sum. We chose higher royalties and artistic control. We took home a $15,000 advance. That’s paltry but nobody could put a thumb on us.”
And then “Mr. Jones” hit. Did that surprise you since I always thought other songs on that debut were closer to the essence of Counting Crows? I liked ‘Mr. Jones” but I never thought it would become a hit. The label was really excited and wanted us
Is that why you never went solo? A lot of singer-songwriters in bands are tempted to do that. I never had that urge. I love being in a band. It’s been so fulfilling for me. Why go somewhere else and do something different when I have everything here? We’re still making music. We love playing all of our songs. Are there some Counting Crows you’ll never do, a la R.E.M., who noted that there were certain songs they would never play live? No, we really could do any of the songs we’ve recorded. I love them all. n

n the shadows of a massive “DO AC”- adorned water tower near the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Route 30 in Atlantic City’s inlet section, adventurous diners will discover a latest addition to our thriving local underground culinary scene. I refer to a food-truck venture — well, actually it’s a trailer — called “I Got Crabs … ’n’ Some Seafood,” owned by husband and wife Carmen and Rita Presti. Having first tested the waters by taking their customized metallic food-service trailer on the road last year — to various festivals and events near their Washington Township home — they opened for business one month ago at this scenic corner locale. Attached to the rear of the Offshore Bait and Tackle shop, the Prestis’ memorably named seafood operation is a cozy, fenced-in oasis, replete with pastel-hued picnic benches for eat-in. “Sometimes less is more,” notes Rita. The food reflects that: admirably simple, fresh, quality seafood, sans pretense and heavy on panache. Like fish tacos delivered as two pliable, overstuffed soft tortillas piled with nicely seasoned grilled mahi, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce and onions. We loved that the ample portion of poisson was chopped into manageable, bite-sized chunks, a thoughtful play from the kitchen. But what really made it sing was a thick, rust-hued, proprietary chipotle sauce, measurably enhanced by the addition of fresh cherry peppers that convey depth, roundness and extra heat. Crab cakes are a house signature item, composed entirely from Rita’s scratch recipe. Prepared Maryland-style — grid-

dled or pan-seared, not deep-fried or broiled — the result is a supple, charming interlude of nearly pure crustacean. Texturally light, packed with sweet, pristine nuggets of costly jumbo lump crab, these immediately leap into the vaunted pantheon of truly extraordinary cakes we know of regionally. While not giving away Rita’s culinary secrets, we will note the use of shallots rather than ordinary onions, which add their own distinctive qualities to a classic Jersey shore standard. Whole crabs are another focus of the menu, steamed Maryland style with Old Bay seasoning, garlic and a house blend of spices. Priced according to market, a dozen typically cost $25 to $30. Other options on the brief bill of fare include superb, crisp fried shrimp, peel-and-eat steamed shrimp; fried cod sandwiches; steamed clams; and sides of hush puppies, macaroni salad or corn on the cob. Except for those crabs, nothing on the menu will set you back more than nine bucks — fine food at decidedly street costs. The Prestis also anticipate specials like scallops or tuna based on seasonality. “When commercial boats come up,” Carmen says, “if it’s available to us and we have it at the right time, we’ll feature it.” Other personnel on hand include the couple’s 24-yearold daughter, Gabriella, a nurse at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia; and a talented young cook running the kitchen identified only as “Scooter” to this columnist. Meanwhile, the first Saturday of summer sees the patrons — including an Atlantic City beat cop — already queuing up just minutes after opening at 11am on the first Saturday of the summer. Soon, they promise to be more than just a seasonal island phenomenon, too: The couple plans to open a larger, yearround facility on South Delsea Drive in Glassboro, near Rowan University, when they close shop in A.C. for the colder months. n

‘JERSEY BOYS’ IS A MUSICAL WITH MAFIA TOUCHES — AND WE GET A DEADLY TRIP IN THE AUSSIE OUTBACK IN ‘THE ROVER’ BY LORI HOFFMAN
I
thanks in large part to Gudio, who was the primary songwriter, and producer Bob Crewe (Mike Doyle). As in any star-is-born scenario we see the struggles to get noticed, then the exciting rise to national recognition, the family conflicts caused by touring far from home, and in this case, the selfish actions of the seedy DeVito, who refuses to leave the mean streets behind. Jersey Boys is a film equivalent of a manicdepressive. When it is on a high, with the glorious music and the rising stardom, it is a blast. When it is on a downer with DeVito’s self-destructive behavior threatening to destroy the Seasons’ success, it is a mob drama. This makes for a film that never seems completely in synch, but by all accounts it’s an honest reflection of the real story behind Jersey Boys, so one can’t fault Eastwood for being true to the material. Young, Lomenda and Bergen all starred in the Broadway show, making the singing scenes particularly strong. Piazza handles the heavy lifting acting-wise since his wiseguy-turned-singer is the catalyst for the good, the bad and the ugly of this narrative. Christopher Walken adds a nice comedic edge to his role as Gyp DeCarlo, the neighborhood mob boss who was — dare we say it? — a Godfather to the group, looking out for their best interests. Young does an amazing job recreating the Frankie Valli magic vocally — and in the end, it is the music that really matters in Jersey Boys.
T
his summer seems to be providing more alternative cinema choices than usual squeezed in between the bigticket flicks. The Rover is a prime example, a bleak examination of the isolated Australian Outback a decade after the economic collapse of the planet, featuring an amazing performance by Guy Pearce as a man on a mission to recover his stolen car. Robert Pattinson co-stars, obviously determined to expand his acting chops beyond his Twilight zone as a mentally challenged young man forced to join in Pearce’s quest. Directed by David Michod (Animal Kingdom), with a screenplay he cowrote with actor Joel Edgerton, The Rover

f we didn’t already know that Clint Eastwood has a musical background, directed Bird and scored several of his own films, it might seem odd that he was tasked with making the film version of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Jersey Boys, based on the career of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. What Eastwood has done is make two different movies, a rising-star musical and a drama that plays an awful lot like Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets. With such a wild contrast in tone, the movie is a rollercoaster ride that soars on the wings of the incredible music and then crashes into the mob element. As we watch these young men growing up in an Italian neighborhood in Newark in the 1950s and ’60s, we see both the temptations of a life of crime, the need to deal with those temptations, and the self-destructive moments that make us wonder how the Four Seasons ever overcame the odds to become a superstar group whose success in the 1960s rivaled the Beatles. Tommy DeVito (played by Vincent Piazza of Boardwalk Empire fame) is a self-centered lout who carelessly mixes his criminal activities with his musical ambitions. He figures out early on that the neighborhood kid who doesn’t have much luck as a crook, Frankie Castelluccio, is a serious meal ticket with his amazing falsetto voice. There are s a lot of growing pains before a collective foursome of Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young), DeVito, Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda) and Bob Gudio (Erich Bergen) find the magic touch,
