E
njoy a fun night out with the peace of mind knowing that you are also bringing goodwill toward mankind this holiday season. Cocktails for a Cause will take place Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 6-8pm in the lounge at Robert’s Steakhouse, Trump Taj Mahal’s signature steakhouse located just off the casino floor. The evening will feature specialty cocktails and passed gourmet appetizers, and all proceeds from a $20 donation will benefit the Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s Southern Branch in EHT. Holiday-themed drinks will include the Candy Cane Cooler, the Snowtini, the Christmas in a Glass, and event sponsor Grey Goose Vodka will feature an ice luge. Guests are also encouraged to bring nonperishable canned goods to gain entry into a raffle, which will include dinner for two at Robert’s. The more canned goods guests bring, the more entries they earn and the better their chances of winning a raffle prize. All donations are tax deductible. Reservations are recommended. Call 428-6505 or visit robertsatlanticcity.com. The Community FoodBank of New Jersey is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and the state’s largest provider of donated groceries, helping to feed approximately one million hungry people each year throughout the state. azz is alive and well in South Jersey and to close out the year, there are several opportunities to catch some live jazz music in December. On Thursday, Dec. 12, Dante Hall in Atlantic City hosts local trumpet player Eddie Morgan, along with Jackie Greggs and REK’D 4 JAZZ for “A Jazzy Holiday II” ($14-$20; stockton.edu/dantehall). That same night (and the next night) the Chelsea Pub hosts Hammond B3 organ extraordinaire Dan Fogel and his trio (6-9pm; $15) and on Sunday, Dec. 15, the Cape May Jazz Vespers second annual benefit concert will be held, with local musicians donating their time to help raise funds for the Philippines Typhoon Relief Fund. Last December, the Jazz Vespers series included a benefit concert for Sandy victims, raising $1,500. The group hopes to meet that mark and more this year with its afternoon concert featuring a slate of great local talent including Gina Roché, Barry Miles, Tim Lekan, Bob Shomo, Greg Pordon, Herb Moore, Bob Ferguson, Lois Smith, Jon Pruitt, Harry Himles and more. The concert starts at 3pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May (capemayjazzvespers.com). Meanwhile, in Atlantic City, also on Dec. 15, jazz vocalist Pam Walker (pictured) and her quartet featuring Robin Van Duzee (piano), Rich Kurtz (bass) and Keith Hollis (drums) performs a free concert at Asbury United Methodist Church (1213 Pacific Ave., 4pm, jazzvespers.com). Finally, the Somers Point Jazz Society always has something going on — with weekly concert series, special events, festivals and even live big band music. Check their schedule at spjs.org.

Cave
‘Threace’ (Drag City)
F
ive songs are all you get on Cave’s recently released (and critically acclaimed) second album on Drag City, Threace,, but they’re long. Instrumentals that don’t figure into any strict genre are also what you get on the album, which clocks in around 42 minutes. The songs are both rockin’ and groovin’ with simple instrumentation and patient, straightforward and ultra tight arrangements. A song such as “Arrow’s Myth” combines the spacey music of the Doors with Latin jazz percussion and the vibe of soundtracks from Blaxploitation films of the 1970s. The psychedelic sounds of the Chicago group’s earlier releases are in effect on Threace (hear the wah-wah in the opener, “Sweaty Fingers”), but the band’s subtle/build-up approach is less predictable than on 2011’s Neverendless. This is good music to get a party started (or to close one out), exercise, take a long drive with, dance and even chill to — whatever you are in the mood for, really. The instrumental four-piece (with a couple guests on tenor sax, flute and additional percussion) lay down some solid acid-rock riffs here; call them a jam band if you must, but consider the All Music Guide’s apt description of the album: “... a mesh of meditative Krautrock, organ drone, and acid-fried fuzz rock all get similar editing treatment, turning in some of the most colorful and deliberate sounds from Cave yet.” — Jeff Schwachter

The NYE Countdown Is On!
N
By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
2014 TENTH YEAR ANNIVERSARY
ew Year’s Eve is Atlantic City’s most action-packed night of the year in terms of widespread partying, with Halloween giving it a run for its money and St. Patrick’s Day earning honorable mention status. Every nightclub in town will have some sort of celebration going on to ring in the New Year on Tuesday night, Dec. 31, as will most pubs and dining establishments. Here are a few ideas for what’s coming up. The Tropicana will again feature a property-wide celebration, with the flagship shindig being Providence’s AC Balldrop 14. Balldrop 14 is a spin-off of an event the NYC Providence nightclub has done for the last 10 years. Providence AC will feature a five-hour premium bar, two hours of hors d’oeuvres, and the music of DJ Finesse for a $95 ticket.
Boogie Nights at the Trop will be doing a “Solid Gold NYE” starting 9pm. Tickets start at $75 and include an open bar from 9pm-midnight. Another good one at the Trop should be the Carnaval De Havana party at Cuba Libre, which puts a 1920s theme on NYE including flyboys, flappers and stilt-walking sheiks. Tickets are $35. ooking for an A-list headliner to help you ring in 2014? You’ll have to look outside of Atlantic City. Way outside. And even then your choices will be fairly limited. There are a lot of experiences over which the gaming halls have a lot of control, things like slot machine payback percentage, entertainment, dining, promotional campaigns, room rates and discounts. But the one thing the casinos can’t control — besides the weather — is the calendar. This year, New Year’s Eve falls on a Tuesday, which just might be the secondworst night of the week to celebrate the year-end holiday. The absolute worst night, many agree, is Wednesday — too far removed from the previous weekend, too early for the next. “We could make any night but Tuesday or Wednesday work for New Year’s Eve [headliner] entertainment by either stretching out a weekend or making [a weekend] come early to keep guests [in town] and to take advantage of the acts that are willing to work,” says one longtime casino executive. “But when December 31 falls in the middle of the week, it’s tough. So we have to offer [guests] alternatives, like fancy dinner parties for our [high rollers, some of which feature headliners]. Or, for our younger guests, opening up [the nightclubs]. Spread out bands around the property. It’s a tricky night to market, that’s for sure.” Some casinos do offer “name” artists for their preferred customers, who receive fancy invitations to what are often dinner shows. Last year, for instance, Borgata’s better bettors were treated to a gourmet meal in the Event Center, followed by a very personalized performance by Tony Orlando, who spent nearly half the show wandering between tables and personally celebrating the holiday with the players. Last year, New Year’s Eve fell on a Monday, so the casinos were able to stretch out the weekend by banking on the fact that many people would take Monday off from work and make one big, long weekend out of it. So after a weekend of acts, several casinos reset their stages and brought in different acts for New Year’s Eve. Borgata, for instance, had comedian and TV sitcom star Billy Gardell in its Music Box. The House of Blues at Showboat featured the rock band Jane’s Addiction on Dec. 31, while Revel brought in hugely popular DJ and EDM producer Tiesto to spin on the big stage in Ovation Hall. Resorts and the Tropicana both went
back to the 1970s to present the rock band Grand Funk Railroad and disco era icons The Village People respectively. This year, things are a little less glittery on New Year’s Eve. Only two acts are available for public consumption. The Tropicana is presenting The Family Stone, a band featuring three of the founding members of the ’60s funk band Sly and the Family Stone. Jerry Martini, Cynthia Robinson, and Greg Errico will perform all of the band’s big hits. Although Sly Stone hasn’t performed with the original band in years, reviews have indicated The Family Stone does a great job of capturing the band’s sound. Resorts Casino Hotel offers the only other show for public sale on New Year’s Eve, and this one is obviously aimed at a mature demographic. Louis Prima Jr. and The Witnesses will work the Superstar Theater and recapture the sights and sounds of Prima’s dad, Louis Prima, who was known as the King of Swing prior to his death in 1978. Although Atlantic City now has plenty of regional competition from casinos in neighbouring states, they’ve apparently adopted the same New Year’s Eve philosophy when it comes to the Dec. 31 holiday. Like Atlantic City, they’ve bracketed the holiday with headliners the weekends before and after New Year’s Eve. But as far as the last night of the year goes, there’s little in the way of headline entertainers at places like Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods in Connecticut. But both places seem to be offering party bands at various restaurants and lounges, which is similar to Atlantic City’s approach to the holiday. If you’re hell-bent on catching a major star at a casino on New Year’s Eve, you’ll have to get yourself out to Las Vegas. But even the desert gaming capital, which usually has a headliner on every corner on New Year’s Eve, the pickings are somewhat slim. Celine Dion, who’s headed into the last year of her residency gig at Caesars Palace, will be working on Dec. 31. Ditto for illusionists David Copperfield and Criss Angel, while Tony Orlando, who actually worked Atlantic City for 22 consecutive New Year’s Eves, will be headlining at the South Point Hotel. Otherwise, Las Vegas is offering holiday guests their pick of big production shows, the majority of which are Cirque du Soleil programs. n

“A Christmas Carol,” Dec. 14, 4pm, Borgata. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is such a remarkable work, it has been a part of our nation’s holiday tradition for more than 150 years. (The novel was first published in 1843.) What better way is there to connect to that history then by enjoying a staging of the classic tale by actor Gerald Dickens, the author’s great-great grandson? Dickens first created his one-man stage adaptation of A Christmas Carol in 1993. The New York Times described his performance as: “A once in a lifetime brush with literary history.”

Culinary-oriented gifts are often great way to satisfy those on your list who are otherwise hard to buy for. By Frank Gabriel

re you in search of a gift for a hard-to-please, food-loving friend or relative? Here are a handful of our suggestions from throughout the South Jersey region. What do luminaries diverse as former President Bill Clinton, Pretenders front woman Chrissie Hynde and casino magnate Steve Wynn have in common? All are devotees — Clinton and Wynn much more recently — of a vegetarian diet and lifestyle. If desirous of a healthful yet appetizing entry into cruelty-free foodstuff, consider one of the American Vegan (Am-Veg) Association’s annual Holiday Celebration Dinners. An American Vegan Association holiday dinner is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 16 and 17, at Careme’s Restaurant at Atlantic Cape Community’s College’s main campus in Mays Landing. Meals are prepared by culinary students under the direction of chef-instructors, so it’s also a great way to support the local community college as well. Although devoid of animal and animalrelated products, Am-Veg events, typically held five or six times annually, remain truly creative epicurean celebrations, so consider this gentler, kinder way of celebrating the season. For menu items and other information, go to americanvegan. org. Households with two or fewer devoted coffee drinkers will find the Brookstone solo cup coffee maker an ideal option for quick, well-made mugs of steamy java. We’ve been exclusively using Brookstone’s simple, thoughtfully designed little machines for about two years now, seeing little need for larger
Struffoli at Christine’s Bakery
capacity devices. Capable of producing three eight ounce portions in 10 minutes, this is a sturdy little workhorse and utterly reliable. Find it at Brookstone stores in The Pier Shops at Caesars, (344-2547) or the Hamilton Mall (484-8474). Consider Cape May dining. We can hardly imagine a locale more conducive to authentic holiday merrymaking than our own historic Cape May. Dangling precipitously at the southeastern tip of Jersey, the windswept December climate is not unlike harsh, bleak coastal England of Dickensian lore. The town itself is a charming Victorian mishmash of shops, residences and some of southern New Jersey’s finest dining. Few restaurant/hospitality facilities however, remain open through the depths of winter like Congress Hall and The Ebbitt
Room. A four-course dinner will be offered at the latter on Christmas Day and a five-course extravaganza courtesy of gifted chef Anthony Micari arrives on New Year’s Eve, both featuring products from proprietary Beach Plum Farms. Christmas Day’s bill of fare is highlighted by entrée choices of pork loin confit, braised veal shank or Dover sole. Main courses for NYE celebrants should expect to select from such entrees as Australian lamb loin, miso-cured duck breast, black bass or butter-poached ribeye. Congress Hall’s rustic Blue Pig Tavern will present a three-course Christmas dinner and The Glitter Ball, a five-course New Year’s Eve gala takes place in their main ballroom to close out 2013. Go to caperesorts.com for more info.

About 30 miles west of A.C. you’ll find an extraordinary conglomeration of Lancaster’s finest in Vineland’s Amish Market. Downtown Vineland’s Amish Market is open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday and located at 631 East Landis Avenue. Enter basement confines once home to a Newberry’s Department Store and you’ll be greeted by the welcoming scents of tasty bakery products like oven-warm soft pretzels and some of the best donuts ever — seriously try the maple or key lime — alongside fresh cheese, deli, poultry, beef and pork. On another shelf, nifty Mason jars are layered with soup or cookie ingredients and labeled with easy-to-follow directions, self-contained little stocking stuffers if we’ve ever seen them. Searching for a special, spectacular cut of meat or free-range turkey for your feasting? This is a place where you can have a dialogue with butchers and poultry personnel to ensure getting exactly what you seek. Trust us; we’ve obtained praiseworthy Pennsylvania beef and a Thanksgiving bird for the ages in the last month. Call for holiday hours at 856-2136002 or go to landismarketplace.com. We’ve been huge fans of a tiny Tilton Road shop called Christine’s Italian Pastry for many a year. Decadent cannolis, Italian ricotta pies and their fabulous array of chocolate-dipped pretzels make any trip here worthwhile. Christine’s was one of the first pastry businesses locally to fully embrace glutenfree preparations, a fast growing segment of the food marketplace. This time of year they also vend a colorful Neapolitan specialty called “struffoli” — cakes formed from honey-covered fritters, often used as centerpieces for holiday tables. Find them at 316 Tilton Rd. in Northfield or call 6465666. ■

Cheech & Chong to light up House of Blues with War and Up in Smoke Holiday Party Dec. 13 By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com There’s a story for the holidays. It’s just Tommy and me. We do our own music and then our opening act is War. We do musical numbers with War [too]. Some of them will be holiday themed. “We’ll be telling a few jokes too.” **** Was music something that you wanted to do early on? Well, I was. I’ve been singing since I was a little kid. I made my first record when I was five, singing Mexican songs. I was always interested in music in school and at some point I learned how to play guitar. How did the recording when you were five transpire? Friends of my family had a little recording device and you would sing in the microphone and it would record and I was just fascinated with that process. He would distribute it throughout the neighborhood. I was just a little kid that could sing “My Little Love of My Heart.” That was like 60 years ago, maybe a little more. I have no idea what happened to it. Were you in bands in high school? Yes. I was in bands in high school and in college. I was in a group in school called the Mission Hill Singers for the town of Mission Hill. [T]hen, I did folk duos and eventually that real folky folk music morphed back into rock and roll. Right around the time when the Byrds started. The 2003 film Masked and Anonymous starts out with you and Bob Dylan in a futuristic apocalypse setting talking to each other.
I’ve never seen it. I should watch it one day. Bob and I knew each other from earlier. He moved out to Malibu and my friend who sold my house sold his house. He used to play basketball with Tommy and me in the driveway when he lived in Malibu too. It had to be around 1975. Did you guys ever jam? No, I never did play with Dylan, but I did a video with him when he was in the Traveling Wilburys for their second album. He was directing the video. We shot this video at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. With Tom Petty and George Harrison and Jeff Lynne — all those guys were in the group. We would shoot this thing and on the second floor of the theatre there was this empty room and it was just loaded with guitars — maybe 50 guitars. Between takes, everybody in the band would run up there and start jamming and playing. How did you get involved with Masked and Anonymous? When it came out it boasted an impressive list of actors — along with you, Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Ed Harris, Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Bruce Dern, Luke Wilson, among others. They called me and asked me. Larry Charles (Seinfeld) was the director. That was really cool too because Dylan and I just spent the whole day [on the set] with each other talking about old folk music. I was really into the folk folk. I think he was impressed that I knew everything I knew. We had other common experiences because of the people I knew that built his house. It’s a cool house — handcrafted. What was it like talking to him on the set of
EVENT INFO Masked and Anonymous? Not many people get the chance to. He’s not the most loquacious guy in the world, but he was very forthcoming. He’ll talk to somebody he’s known a long time, which I have. He’s a cool guy, very funny and he has a good sense of humor, but he’s very silent around other people. I was surprised. If you and Tommy were making your movies today, do you think the movie companies would ever go for something like Up in Smoke? It’s hard to tell. They’ve been trying to remake it in some form throughout the years. Now with the Internet you can watch it all the time. It probably would’ve been different. We made it in the ’70s and the taste in movies was a lot different then. The scenes were allowed to play out in real time. It could let you get into the scene. The thing about comedies and making you laugh is that they let you discover where the humor is. That’s what’s so strong about your films. There are so many funny things in there. It’s a really different pace and I don’t know if that pace goes now. My youngest boy is 17, but when he was 10 I was trying to show him movies that I thought he would enjoy, like Close Encounters of the First Kind, which was like a technical marvel for the time, and he’s watching it and he goes, “It’s so slow,” and I just looked at him and I was just like there’s no hope in your generation. It is just a different language. And that’s all right. They have their own language for their own time, and when we look at silent movies we say, “God, it’s sooo slow.” Was there a lot of improvisation in the Cheech & Chong films? All the time. Basically we did improv. We could never remember any lines. Improv is what we know. We wrote the jokes and the scenarios so we know what it was. That was hardest for us to do, when we had to say exactly the written words. It was so stupid. Ours came out so natural because that was our technique. At the end of the Next Movie film, with the whole space aliens thing, and your cousin Red, it was like a totally different movie than when it started. That part was written. Tommy and I were sitting on my porch talking about the space aliens scene. It cracked me up. It was perfect. Did you and Tommy have complete creative control on your first few movies? We did on all of our movies. We didn’t know what we were doing so they couldn’t criticize. We did whatever we wanted. Your Cheech and Chong characters seem so real that people thought that was really you. Even reviewers. During the middle of an interview this guy is starring at me and he says: “You don’t speak with an accent,” and it caught me off guard. I’m [like], “No, that’s acting!” ■ see more online @

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • DECEMBER 12 - 18, 2013
ichard Anthony “Cheech” Marin was born in Los Angeles in 1946, but it was in Vancouver where he met his future comedy partner Tommy Chong. The day after a very positive audition for Frank Zappa’s band in California in 1967, Marin, a musician since he was young, headed up to Canada to get out of going to Vietnam. (Marin, a guitar player, singer and art collector has remained close with Zappa’s family over the years.) Chong, a native of Canada (but a naturalized U.S. citizen since the 1980s) and six years Marin’s senior, was already working as a musician in a few different bands in the Vancouver area when he met up Marin. “We met in Vancouver in Canada,” recalls Marin, during a phone call from his California home for Atlantic City Weekly. “He was a musician as well. His band was breaking up and he had seen improv theater, and that’s what he wanted to do. His parents, who were running a nightclub in Vancouver that he had left to go [play] with his band, had turned it into a topless club when he came back. [It was] Vancouver’s first topless club. And so he turned it into an improv nightclub with the topless element. Basically what it was was ‘hippie burlesque.’ And somewhere along the line I showed up and we met and he hired me as a writer and then I started performing bits and then when the troupe broke up we stayed together.” Although the Cheech & Chong partnership was born in Canada in the late 1960s, the duo conquered America with its acclaimed and ground-breaking comedy albums during the early 1970s, leading up to the soundtrack for the pair’s first feature film, 1978’s classic Up in Smoke. Films such as Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie, Nice Dreams, Things are Tough All Over and The Corsican Brothers, among others, kept Cheech & Chong in the comedy-film limelight through the mid 1980s. Although Cheech & Chong split in the 1980s, the duo would eventually reunite. Along with TV series, film roles, documentaries and jail time (for Chong) over the subsequent years, they’ve been touring (on weekends) for several years now, making their fourth appearance in Atlantic City in five years, Friday, Dec. 13, at the House of Blues at Showboat. Marin says, if anything, he and Chong’s relationship has stayed consistent over the decades. “It hasn’t evolved,” Marin says with a laugh. “It was fully formed the day we met and it’s stayed exactly the same. We’ve always had a love/hate relationship. We’re two strong personalities. The only thing that was a constant was if it’s funny it goes in; if it’s not we could argue about it all day.” Marin adds that his job during the comedy duo’s collaboration was to recognize Chong’s “good ideas” and “ignore his bad ideas” during their film, album and live projects. “And it’s stupid enough that it worked,” Marin says. “And he knew how to get the best out of me, so it was an interesting collaboration.” What will go into Cheech & Chong’s “Up in Smoke Holiday Party” show — with War as musical guest — this Friday in Atlantic City? “Well, we’re going to do stuff we’ve never done before on stage,” says Marin. “There’s going to be music, because we’re big musically.

EVENT INFO
From Bizarre to Sublime The inaugural Bizarre AC event brings a ‘strange and curious weekend’ to the Tropicana Dec. 13-15 with horror-film screenings, meet-and-greets, sideshows, merchandise sales and more. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

DECEMBER 12 - 18, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
F
ans of all things freakish, frightful and horrifying will be in hog heaven this weekend, as Friday the 13th kicks off three days of devilish fun and frolic at the Tropicana in an unconventional convention that event organizer Jon Henderson has dubbed Bizarre AC. A 15,000 square-foot epicenter called the Bizarre Bazaar will have all kinds of outlandish exhibitors and merchandise from around the world. The event will also include about 20 independent horror-film screenings; seminars and meet-and-greets with stars, makeup artists and behindthe-scenes sorts; and of course the wacky sideshow performers that have become a trademark of Henderson-produced events in Atlantic City. “We’ve been wanting to do an event like this for a while now,” says Henderson, whose Good Time Tricycle outfit has brought A.C. the annual Tattoo Expo, Seafood Festival, Average Joe Expo and the ultra-popular A.C. Beer and Music Fest each spring. “The whole horror convention isn’t a novel concept. It’s not like we’re reinventing the wheel, but I think we’ve added some programming that makes it easier for people to come out and be able do a handful of different things in layers. We put a nice little bundle of programming together above and beyond all the celebrities and special guests we have coming out.
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
The Bizarre Bites menu includes such delicacies as Peruvian Grilled Heart with hot sauce and yucca fries; Pig Parts Ragu with shaved Romano cheese; crispy Rocky Mountain Oysters with Cajun remoulade; Kidney, Belly and Steak Pie; and for dessert, assorted fruit flavored ant and worm lollipops. “When we built the show we specifically focused on December and a quieter time in Atlantic City to show that these unique programs can absolutely help move bodies through the door, which is something you don’t see a lot of companies doing. Most will try to take advantage of guests that are already in the market. On a tourism front we’re kind of operating outside of the box and saying: ‘Hey, give us a weekend that we know nobody’s going to be there and we’re going to drive bodies, we’re going to be the reason you see bodies going through the door. And we’re going to show that [with Bizarre AC]. We feel this is another program that’s really going to run some tourism through Atlantic City and fill up the Trop.” One of the offshoot events, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14, from 4-6pm, is called Bizarre Bites. Tropicana executive chef Demetrios Haronis (who was recently named Chef of the Year by the Professional Chefs Association of South Jersey) put together “a unique experience in savoring food” (“from bugs to balls, you’ll savor it all,” says Henderson). The cost is $40 in advance ($50 at the door, if room). On the kickoff night, Friday, Dec.
13, from 10pm-midnight, Sirius XM radio personality Richard Christy will host what is called “13 beers that should scare the shit out of you” at the Trop’s 24-hour pub Firewaters. The cost is $32, and each beer is served in three-ounce pours. “Chef D really knocked it out of the park with the Bizarre Bites menu, and Richard Christy doing the 13 Beers on Friday the 13th is going to be kick-ass,” says Henderson. “The screenings, the seminars of the guys who played Jason [Steve Dash and Kane Hodder, in the Friday the 13th horror-flick series] who will talk about being one of the most famous serial killers on the silver screen — there’s just tons and tons going on.” The Bizarre Bites menu includes nine eccentric food items, among them such delicacies as Peruvian Grilled Heart with hot sauce and yucca fries; Pig Parts Ragu with shaved Romano cheese; crispy Rocky Mountain Oysters with Cajun remoulade; Kidney, Belly and Steak Pie; and for dessert, assorted fruit flavored ant and worm lollipops.
On Saturday night, event goers can enter the inaugural Bizarre AC Costume Contest for cash, prizes and awards for most original, scariest, best-in-show and people’s choice. All costumes must represent horror, Halloween or science fiction. There are different age groups and judging starts at 7pm on Saturday. “The whole weekend should be a lot of fun,” says Henderson. “It’s Friday the 13th weekend, it’s 12 days before Christmas, it’s just something different. Everybody’s so beat up and run down during the holiday season; it’s a chance to let people just unwind from being bogged down by all the bullshit. It kind of takes your brain away from all that for a while and, along the same lines, the show allows people to shop for those folks who may be hard to shop for, but may be into the whole horror thing, since there will be so many unique exhibitors participating.” Some of the nearly 20 films being screened throughout the weekend (in four theaters throughout the Trop) include Zombie Strippers, Mischief Night, Haunted Hayride, Attack of the Brain People, Blood Slaughter Massacre and Sheriff Tom vs. the Zombies. “I’m excited,” says Henderson. “I think people are going to have a good time, be entertained, and that’s what we set out to do every year with new programs. We’re not afraid to take risks on Atlantic City. It kind of follows the model ‘Atlantic City has been good to us, so we’ll always be good to Atlantic City.’” ■
Bizarre AC Preand Post-Parties
Three parties are on tap at the Trop, including one on Thursday night, Dec. 12, which will serve to kick off the Bizarre AC festivities the following night. The “Dancing Dead” pre-party will take place at Providence nightclub on the upper level of The Quarter starting 11pm Thursday with DJ Jason Smith. On Friday night, guys and ghouls who show their Bizarre AC wristbands can get into Boogie Nights for free starting 10pm. Likewise on Saturday night, rock out with the “Heavy Metal Karaoke After Party” at Planet Rose Karaoke Bar in The Quarter (adjacent to Providence) starting 10pm. — RS see more online @

Smashed by Gallagher
Or, what happened when a reporter asked about the Sledge-O-Matic. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

allagher, the comedian who turned a sledgehammer into a weapon of mass hilarity, is retiring soon, mostly to pursue his patents in casino gaming technology. However, before he hangs up his Sledge-O-Matic for good, he is touring one final time with his farewell show, Gallagher’s Last Smash. In the middle of my recent interview with Gallagher, I asked him about the origins of his sledgehammer antics and was
rather surprised by his reaction. Enjoy. Since you’ve had some medical issues [multiple heart attacks], how are you feeling? I’m physically able to do it, just as good as I ever did, but that was the way I felt every time I had a heart attack. I’m telling my fans that they should come by and see me. I don’t think they will be irritated if I live another year.
So what’s next for you? In 2005 I applied for a patent for software for slot machines that adds video to the slot machine experience. We just had a gaming convention and I have six companies negotiating with me. Comedy is not the only thing that I do. I write songs, I’m preparing a book of poems for parents to read to their kids about animals. I have five or six patents. New Jersey is the first state to legalize online gaming [correction: Nevada and Delaware were the first states to do so]. My patent will be applicable. It’s really about the software experience. Just the way Amazon ruined the book business; it’s going to do the same thing for casinos. There is no need to go to a casino when you can play on your phone. What I’ve done, I’ve patented using film on the slot machines to entertain. I look at the world and see how it could be more fun. I have a patent for a building for family reunions that should be at every basketball game, baseball, football stadium, as well as golf courses and Disneyland that families can have reunions and the kids can learn that they already belong to a gang and don’t need to join a neighborhood gang. They need to realize where they come from. Getting back to comedy, how did you develop your ideas about comedy? There is something just so identifiable about wanting to smash something. Could you talk about how you came up with that concept? I don’t want to talk about that. Everybody that comes to my show already knows. The young kids don’t know. It’s not pertinent. It just pigeonholes me. I just told you amazing things. Why don’t you ask me how in the hell a comedian has patents on other forms of entertainment? That’s what’s amazing. Every amusement

EVENT INFO park in America has a splash ride. It’s obvious I have influenced entertainment in America. Steve Wynn built a hotel with a swimming pool in the middle and hands out towels. There’s Blue Man Group, [the] Insane Clown [Posse], Shamu, all of them splashing people. It’s become a part of American and probably worldwide entertainment. I mean you just keep harping on the same shit. Why don’t you just say, ‘You’re that guy who smashes watermelons, aren’t you?’ My audience isn’t interested in how I came up with the idea. So what do you want to be remembered for? I already told you. The future. Everybody reveres Steve Jobs, but nobody acts like him. They act more like Bill Gates. Bill thought that all we’d ever need a computer for is to put it under our desks and use [the] Word [program]. What is your vision for the future? I told you: Families should have a building at every amusement place where they could have a family reunion, to stop kids from joining gangs. Kids are doing stupid things. They have no leadership in this country. Nobody is raising the kids. You’re in New Jersey. Kids are running around smashing old ladies in the face. What do you say about a civilization where kids run around making a video of smashing an old lady in the face? I’d like to talk to Donald Trump. I’ve tried to and I can’t get through. We’ve lost our families. Houses have turned into hotels. Everyone is in their own bedroom on their own device. What do you think the Japanese and the French think of American culture when kids are smashing old people in the face? It’s one without leadership. That’s why we have low scores in science and mathematics. The whole place goes to shit and the adults don’t seem to notice. ■ see more online @

and they do. Once DeGroat is brought into the picture as an adversary of the Baze brothers, the movie feels like an intriguing hybrid of a classic Charles Bronson flick, Hard Times, and the mountain folk ambience of Winter’s Bone, with a desire for revenge as the thumping undercurrent. Bale is an actor who I suspect was happy to be the center of a major franchise, the Batman trilogy, in part because he wanted the economic freedom to do smaller movies that allow him to take his acting skills on a complex journey. Affleck has been stepping out from behind the shadow of brother Ben with his excellent work in Gone Baby Gone and The Killer Inside Me, adding another gem to his resume here. How good is Woody Harrelson? He manages to be a lot scarier than Willem Dafoe as a vicious redneck psycho. And once caught by Bale’s Russell, he seems oddly at peace with the notion that he will die at the hands of a man who has every right to pull the trigger. Toss in a nice, if small turn by Saldana, Forest Whitaker (who disguises his normally soft-spoken voice with a gruff growl as the local sheriff), Sam Shepherd, and all-purpose character actor Tom Bower and Out of the Furnace has plenty of contributors to its success. Writer-director Cooper (who co-wrote the screenplay with Brad Ingelsby) has a nice feel for making the Rust Belt locale come to life as another character in the piece. Out of the Furnace would not be out of place if sent back in time to the 1970s, a decade when dramas were a dominant genre appreciated by movie audiences. n

reetings and salutations. As you may know, the day you’re reading this column, Dec. 12, is also the day Frank Sinatra was born. Had he been alive he would be 98 years old today. And if you listen to my show, The Geator, Frank & Friends, every Sunday at noon on WOND 1400AM on the dial, we also include my dear friend Sammy Davis Jr., who was born Dec. 8, and if he were alive he would be 88 years of age and forever young, like the folks who read this column. And let me take this opportunity to wish every one of you a very healthy, happy and merry Christmas, hopefully to be spent with family, friends and loved ones. My next column will be out right between Christmas and the first of the year. So to one and all, happy holidays and the very best of the season. Before we get started, I’ve got a little Christmas trivia for you. Which artist recorded the original version of “Jingle Bell Rock”? Was it Bobby Helms, the Platters, Chet Atkins, or Dion? Answer at the end of the column — now let’s ask the Geator. Will Darlene Love be on the David Letterman show again this year? We loved her in the documentary Twenty Feet from Stardom. — Jan & Joe, Williamstown No question about it, and this will be Darlene’s 28th straight year on the show singing “Christmas Baby (Please Come Home).” She’ll be in New York taping the show on Dec. 19 and it will air the next night, which will be Friday, Dec. 20. Hey Jerry! Who is in the lineup for the January 25 concert at the Kimmel Center? I’m excited! — Chris P., Churchville, Pa. Our Jan. 25 show is a salute to great voices of the ’60s. The complete lineup: Jay Black, formerly of Jay & the Americans. Bobby Rydell. Eddie Holman. Gary U.S. Bonds. Jay Siegel’s Tokens. And Pat Upton, the voice of the Spiral Starecase — and when you hear him do “More Today than Yesterday” you’ll think you’re back at Memories in Margate during the summertime. Do you think there will ever be a movie made about Tiny Tim? I know you had him on your show a few times in the ’60s. Was the way he talked just an act? — Anita Peller, Longport No, that was Tiny Tim. What you heard and saw was the real deal. He was a gentle soul and really became a household name t h r o u g h the Tonight Show when J o h n n y Carson had him do the wedding live when he married Miss Vicki. His “act” was genuine, as he had a true love of the music of the past and was really quite knowledgeable about it. I don’t know how much of that life would be interesting as far as a movie, and unless there’s a book to base it on, it might be very difficult to get a screenplay for a movie that has any depth. Answer to trivia question: Bobby Helms had the original version of “Jingle Bell Rock” in 1957. ■

How good is Woody Harrelson? He manages to be a lot scarier than Willem Dafoe as a vicious redneck psycho.
ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • DECEMBER 12 - 18, 2013
he move industry today is so relentlessly driven by tent-pole movie franchises like The Hunger Games and The Avengers, plus family friendly animation, movie dramas have become an endangered species. However, there are a few out there, for example, Out of the Furnace, a character-driven drama being sold as a crime thriller. Fueled by an amazing cast led by Christian Bale, Casey Affleck and Woody Harrelson, Out of the Furnace, co-written and directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), is a gritty examination of bluecollar lives in turmoil, men facing tough decisions and doing what they must to survive. Bale plays Russell Baze, who works at the steel mill in the Rust Belt town of Braddock, Pa., content in his life with his girlfriend Lena (Zoë Saldana). His brother Rodney (Affleck) is a soldier between tours who can’t get a handle on life after war. Out of work but refusing to march in step and get a job at the mill, he borrows money from the local crime boss John Petty (played by Willem Dafoe), with no way to pay him back. After a tragic car accident Russell winds up in prison. By the time he gets out his girlfriend has moved on and his brother’s trying to pay off his debts as a brawler in illegal backwoods boxing matches. This gets him involved with Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson), whose pull reaches from Braddock to his home base in the mountains of Ramapo, N.J. With its deliberate pacing, there isn’t much “thriller” in this drama despite the major criminal element. Out of the Furnace needs its characters to engage us,
