‘Tis the Season to be Sippin’ (Craft) Suds A
tlantic City Weekly and the fine folks at Magic Hat Brewery have honed an enviable working relationship since the Vermont craft brewer made its presence felt at the inaugural “Celebration of the Suds,” which returns to the A.C. Convention Center for the ninth year next spring (April 4-5; OK that’s eight months away, but trust us, the beer fest's creator Jon Henderson is already working on enhancing the most recent version). Part of the aforementioned working relationship involves sampling new brews that make their way down from the Green Mountain State and onto the palates of AC Weekly’s ’s beer buffs each season. As the saying goes, it’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it. On shelves throughout South Jersey this summer is Magic Hat’s four-flavored Summer Scene Variety Pak (available at all Joe Canal’s locations, at White Horse Liquors in Absecon, and numerous other local outlets), which is a 12-pack including three bottles of four varieties. The Summer Pak features Elder Betty (described as a Weiss-style ale with the tart flavors of elderberry, now available in cans); HiCü (citrus undertones, underscored by “a dash of cool cucumber and the slightest hint of hibiscus”); Blind Faith (Magic Hat’s interpretation of an I.P.A.; well-balanced with a rich malt body, crisp hop bitterness and citrus aromas); and the brewery’s perennial summer offering Magic Hat #9 (a refreshing “not-quite pale ale”). “[HiCü] is the one that seems to be a bit of a polarizer, but I really dug it,” says Magic Hat publicity dude Dave Obenour, “especially for a summer beer, which are normally just so light and mild.” Visit magichat.net, or for a link to a comprehensive overview of craft brew news throughout New Jersey (including ways to save on their purchase), go to newjerseycraftbeer. com. Craft beers in general have been infiltrating the American beer-drinking public at a rapid rate recently, putting a serious dent in the sales of the mass-produced conglomerate suds (most of which epitomize “light and mild”) as more and more folks appreciate the fact that beer, like wine, can be a sophisticated beverage. Many craft beers are brewed in the style of an IPA (or India Pale Ale), which has an earthy, bitter sort of taste to it. IPAs reinforce the notion that, as we mature and become more adventurous in trying new things, we start to realize that not everything that is bitter, sour or “earthy” tasting is necessarily bad. Atlantic City’s only brewpub, the Tun Tavern, has a revolving slate of seasonal beers on tap that are also available for takeout in half-gallon (64-ounce) growlers. Initial purchase of a growler is $20 and you can bring them back to the Tun for $12 refills. Among the brews available this summer is Kvass, described on the brewpub’s Web site (tuntavern.com) as “a refreshing summer Eastern European beverage made from a traditional rye-bread recipe and spiced with lemon peel and mint.” Easily among the best spots in Atlantic City (and likely South Jersey) to sample a variety of different craft beers on tap, Firewaters at the Tropicana has an impressive array of 50 drafts and seasonal brews from around the world, plus over 100 brands of bottled beer. Those wary of whether or not they will like a draft they never had before can go the “economical sampler” route at Firewaters, where samplings of four different draft brews can be purchased in a group of mini-mugs. There’s a new retail outlet at 648 N. Albany Avenue (right across the Black Horse Pike from the old Sandcastle Stadium) called the Atlantic City Bottling Company that not only offers an exceptional selection of craft beers, but also hard-to-find whiskies and wines. The establishment also has a bar-and-lounge component that serves small-plate items with advice on how to pair your chosen beverage with appropriate dishes. Stop by the store or visit acbottlecompany.com. Fred & Ethel’s Lantern Light Tavern in Smithville (fredandethelstavern.com) sports a surprisingly good selection of craft brews, including Flying Fish Red Fish and Hopfish IPA, Goose Island Matilda and Nut Brown Ale, Ommegang Abbey Ale, Sierra Nevada Narwhal Imperial Stout and Ruthless Rye IPA, Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale, Weyerbacher Merry Monks Ale, Yards General Washington Tavern Porter and several others. Other area establishments offering impressive craft-brew menus include Boardwalk Beer Garden, Ducktown Tavern, Vagabond Kitchen & Tap House, The Chelsea hotel’s Teplitzky’s and Revel’s Mussel Bar in A.C.; the Brick House Pub & Grille in Mays Landing, Chickie’s & Pete’s in EHT and W.L. Goodfellows in Absecon.
