ARRIAGE IS A BIG STEP. THIS STATEMENT may seem obvious, but an in-depth analysis produces multiple reasons why marrying is life altering. Once the natural progression for couples, marriage has evolved into a choice. There are also new trends in lifestyles both before and after the exchanging of vows and rings. Due to sociological and economic changes, ages for today’s first-time bridal couples have risen to the late 20s. Also, as people live longer, more seniors are walking down that aisle for the first, second or third time. The reasons for marrying later have transformed our culture. Educated women have financial independence. Also, many widowed and divorced seniors are living on their retirement savings, delaying an urgency to marry again. The U.S. Census Bureau’s data reveals that almost five million couples lived together in 2005, a tremendous increase from five decades ago. A 2000 study shows that more than 50 percent of married couples had cohabitated, even briefly, prior to marrying. Although covering the age spectrum, the average was

between 25 and 34. According to Professor Maria Kefalas of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, there may be a mini-trend that reverses some cultural lifestyles of the past 50 years with regard to married life. Multi-generational families lived either together or nearby for centuries. In the postwar 1950s, couples began populating the expanding suburbs. As the baby boomer generation took over, educational and professional opportunities created a mobile society. Families grew more distant. An aging population relocating to warmer climates also changed the family dynamic. Kefalas has studied family lifestyles, and reveals a movement to return to former family patterns. Family “compounds” have appeared, where multiple generations live either on the same property or within minutes of each other. The reasons are varied and include factors such as economics, emotional support, two-income families seeking free childcare help or married adult children in school who need housing. While not for everyone, many families are exploring the post-marriage possibilities.

First, Relax and Enjoy the Experience A wedding is supposed to be fun and a celebration of the love between two people. Unfortunately, it often turns into a frenetic series of decisions, disagreements and different expectations. A savvy groom will want to start the process in style. Everyone knows about wedding planners, but a new niche market is the proposal planner. According to the Web site www.weddingchannel.com, these experts advise a prospective groom on how to “pop the question in a memorable way, possibly using proposal paparazzi to discreetly photograph the exact moment. While holidays and Valentine’s Day are popular proposal times, the annual vacation may be a fun site for a marriage proposal. How better to pledge eternal love than set against some romantic spot like Hawaii, the Caribbean or Mexico? Relax and enjoy the ride. A wedding is one day. The smarter duos recognize that their life together is meant to be forever, and that discord can cause long-term hard feelings. Besides the gown, gorgeous jewelry is a must, from engagement to wedding rings and other accessories. The rings may be forever, but the rest can be temporary for brides who want to rent their gems. Sites like www. bagborroworsteal.com provide information on leasing jewelry or handbags for the big day. For less than $100, a bride can be dripping in diamonds and pearls from famous designers. A wedding band is a bit more permanent, and many couples choose to personalize their bands with traditional hand or machine engraving. On www.wedalert. com, a wedding resource site, writer Jerry Biern reports

that laser engraving allows for entire messages up to 225 characters. He states that, these days, couples are writing civil and religious vows, plus love poetry. In an era when blending cultures, religions and race has become more commonplace, couples may want to incorporate a more spiritual ceremonial experience. Reverend Riana Milne, of Ceremonies by the Sea, LLC in Egg Harbor Township, is an ordained interfaith minister. She has officiated at personalized wedding, civil union and commitment ceremonies for more than 10 years throughout the southern New Jersey area. Milne

also conducts renewal rituals, for those who want to reaffirm their commitment. A licensed psychotherapist, Milne provides a complete relationship journey for couples, including premarital counseling. “I perform love ceremonies in over 45 locations, including casinos, country clubs and hotels,” says Milne. “There are various choices when performing a custom ceremony.” Some unusual ceremonies include the “Sand,” “Wine,” “Garden” and “Ocean” types. The best parties always have the best music, and live entertainment adds a sophisticated, personal touch. Don Kreutzer, owner of Cheers the Band, of Galloway Township, notes that his typical 25-to-35-year-old wedding customers seek the “elegance and energy” of a live band. “A live band scores high on guests’ wedding memories,” says Kreutzer. “The expertise of the bandleader is crucial to respond to the evening’s events while

incorporating the couple’s wishes.” Kreutzer says that couples shouldn’t expect to select all the music if they hire a band. “We interact with the couple in advance by having a game plan conversation,” he says. “They can anticipate 40 to 60 songs, representing everything from contemporary dance, hip-hop, ’80s rock and rap to ’70s hits, swing, ballroom ballads and big band selections.” Pricing varies, but Kreutzer estimates a $5,000 to $7,500 average fee of up to 11 pieces and four to five hours of music. Booking a year in advance is preferable to reserve a good band, he says.
Say Cheese, Please Since wedding photography debuted in the early 1800s, couples have wanted to commemorate their nuptials with pictures that freezes the event as a snapshot in time. Early on, cumbersome camera equipment and poor lighting often meant posing in photography studios rather
than at the wedding ceremony. Wedding albums grew popular in the 1880s, when photographers began to include the wedding party in the photographs. Decades later, the wedding celebration itself became the subject of the photo album. After World War II, film and improved lighting techniques, aided by the new flash bulb, helped photographers realize the profitability of the wedding industry if they took photos on site. By the 1970s, the chronological “day of” approach to the wedding became the norm, and it remains the popular practice. Today, two styles dominate wedding photography: traditional and photojournalistic. The former includes the conventional posed portraits and still shots, while the latter emphasizes the candid impromptu shots. Many professional photographers combine elements of both. The wedding Web site www.theknot.com reports a trend where guests have become paparazzi. By placing disposable video cameras on the tables for guests to use, it can be fun for everyone while not jeopardizing the finished product.
BRIGHTON
Leenie, in Absecon, has created wedding memories for 20 years. She has witnessed many changes in bridal photography. “Today’s couples avoid a posed, stiff look to their wedding pictures,” says Light. “They still request portraits, but want a more relaxed appearance. The photojournalism concept initially attracts them and we do that too, but traditional still sells.” Older couples marrying for the second or third time prefer a different emphasis. They will want their portrait and the ceremony, but family is most important. Light adds, “For older couples, taking good photos of the entire family counts most. The kids and grandchildren from both sides are key for them. Anything else is icing on the cake.” Many photographers now combine the two styles. Light uses both digital and film shots for the photos. She says that digital pictures only translate well up to a maximum eight-by-ten photo album. Film stills remain the best method, she says, for producing high quality photographs that may be enlarged for wall portraits. While digital cameras and the Internet have become increasingly popular for taking and developing photos, Light warns against relying on a favorite relative with a new camera. She contends that the profes-

THAT SPECIAL
(Continued from preceding page) “Images tell a story,” says Light. “There are numerous layouts and designs.” Going the digital route requires less paper, which is favorable to the environment. Also, improved ink quality in the past few years means fewer chemicals used. Faster development and assembly has expedited the delivery of the finished product. Light estimates that if all goes well and the bills are paid, the wedding package averages $4,000 to $6,000, and the wait should average approximately 14 weeks. Experts believe good photography is one area worth paying for. It is one of a few expenditures that endure long after the guests have gone home.
Getting the Right ‘Do’ for the Day A bride wants the perfect hairstyle for her wedding day. Chances are she has spent quite a bit of time in her stylist’s
chair seeking the perfect look. However, her wedding day hairdo may require proactive attention for months prior to the big day. Taking careful steps in advance may eliminate wedding day woes and a “hair-owing” experience. This is no time for experimentation. There may be trends that define brides during a certain decade, but proceed with caution. Not everyone has the right shape for hair swept off the face, just as some brides may need some hair on the neck and shoulders to balance out a gown’s appearance. For brides with a desire to test a new color or hairstyle, make sure that there is a window of several months because that terrible haircut will need time to grow in nicely. Color can be touched up the week of the wedding. Also, any hair accessories, including pins, barrettes and flowers, should be brought in to ensure

the feasibility of the style. Coordinating a bridal party for a wedding takes planning and some cooperation. Most salons that serve several members of the bridal party on the same day will require a contract in order to designate stylists and the time needed. What does a wedding party contract contain? According to Nicole Cohen, assistant salon manager and wedding coordinator for Esthetica Salon and Spa in Northfield, the agreement covers the entire wedding party. “To maintain order, the bridal party may communicate only with my counterpart, Stefanie Bird, or me,” says Cohen. “No one else will be involved. We guarantee that the operators will be present and devote the necessary time, especially for the bride. There are just no excuses for that day. “While we do not take a deposit, we do take a credit card number to hold the time,” adds Cohen. “Any change must be made prior to seven days before the
wedding to avoid being charged. Also, full price is charged for anyone who fails to show up for her appointment.” Seasonal fluctuations mean more availability during the winter months. April to October are the busiest months, and brides will be wise to make their reservations four to six months in advance.
Once a salon is selected, talk to the coordinator about setting up a trial date with a stylist. Cohen recommends bringing a camera to take a photograph since one’s memory is often unreliable on such a momentous day. What can the bridal party expect to pay, and what is the proper etiquette for tip-
ping? Cohen estimates $80 to $100 for the bride, and $70 to $90 for the bridesmaids. While it is standard for each bridesmaid to pay her own bill, there are times when a bride will treat her bridal party to the experience. Cohen recommends tipping the stylist 15 or 20 percent. Anyone who wants a extra special style should expect to pay on the high end because of the extra time and hair products required. It is estimated that each hairdo will take between 60 to 90 minutes. “We see our younger clients are leaning towards half up and half down, and using curls or hair extensions for an accent,” says Cohen. No matter what style or salon, a bride should be free of stress. Cohen adds that with so much going on that day, a salon’s goal should be to accommodate the bride with a hassle-free experience.

This year, options range from the full flowing gown with veil, headpiece and train to a simpler, more demure dress. The bridal demographics have changed in the past 50 years, and so have the gowns. A bride’s age can range from the late teens to the 90s. Economics and lifestyle influence gown selection. Is it sensible to spend a significant chunk of the wedding budget on a dress worn once? Some women think so, but others say no. Tesi Miteva, owner of Tesi Bridal Boutique in Ventnor, has dozens of gowns for all budgets. The average price is $1,000 to $1,500, but select gowns can cost up to $3,000. This price tag includes the veil and headpiece. Alterations are additional. What is in style this year? Miteva claims we must all watch celebrities. “Fashions trends come from Hollywood,” she says. While strapless gowns remain the most popular, scoop sleeves with lace coverage and baby doll styles

“These women work hard to maintain their shapes, and want a streamlined body style. Usually, they will choose a halter or strapless dress without a train. Again, the color is softer.” For a smooth experience, Miteva recommends ordering at least four to six months in advance, with up to a year the ideal. Occasionally, a bride may find something in stock from her huge selection.

are attracting many brides. “Empire and baby doll flatter the less than perfect figure,” according to Miteva. “Silk ruching, a style that pulls on fabric around the waist, also slims. Some headpieces have returned to a more traditional pillbox style with a small veil. Chapel train lengths are three yards from the waist, and there is a move towards combining materials, such as a satin top and an organza bottom.” The solid white dress has diminished in favor for years, and brides desire softer colors. Picking from lighter shades, they can select ivory with gold, cream, eggshell and champagne. Brides who are older or marrying for a second time may choose a more form fitting dress. Miteva explains,
Keeping pace with a changing society, a new component to bridal design markets to pregnant brides. Although expecting, they still want to dress as a traditional bride. The numbers may be greater than the public realizes. The bridal industry has accepted its part in flattering the bride-to-be. Since 2004, Maternity Bride has serviced the needs of expectant brides on www. maternitybride.com. The company has also opened five stores in the U.S. Brides should always remember their bridesmaids’ tastes, wallets and figures. The expense of being a member of the bridal party becomes apparent while shopping for dresses. Formerly considered a “wear once” frock, the honor also became a burden. Some popular styles currently in vogue are bold brights and cooler colors — including navy, silver, copper, bronze and pewter metallic — in various lengths. Differentiating from the popularity of strapless wedding gowns, bridesmaids are finding that novel necklines that use either V-neck or halter-top styling are in fashion. n
