Hot Trends for Warmer Weather From buttercup yellow to the new trapeze dress, plus shopping on a budget By Sharon Harris-Zlotnick S THE PLAN TS BLO O M AN D THE G R ASS turns green, bright colors like spring flowers are central to this season’s fashions. Yellow in all shades is the hottest hue. USA Today reporter Donna Freydkin reports that shades of gold, yellow and buttercup are going to appear in apparel, makeup, shoes and other accessories. Bright yellow makes a modern statement, but is neutral enough to pair with multiple other colors. However, experts urge women to match the proper shade with individual hair and skin color. Brunettes can easily wear yellow unless skin color has red and clashes. With uneven skin tones, it is advised that women limit their yellow to accessories.

Yellow trapeze dresses are in.
Shades of gold, yellow and buttercup will be everywhere. Blondes should stick to soft yellows and buttercup yellow is the best match for redheads, according to the experts. Yellow may be the favorite, but all bright colors hit their mark this spring. Meredith DeLeo, owner of Chic Boutique in Northfield, agrees that color is key in dresses and tops that are worn over lighter weight denim. “My customers are mothers and daughters between sizes 0 and 16, says DeLeo. “Dresses in all lengths are big sellers. I put the greatest importance on the three ‘C’ elements of fashion — color, comfort and cuteness — when I choose what to sell in my store. Missy and plus-sized women will find a large selec-
tion of this season’s most fashionable dresses, evening separates and casual tops at Jenny’s in Ventnor. Owner Linda Greenspun stocks casual, dressy and evening wear, and takes pride in spending enough time with her customers.

Co-owner Jody Levchuk claims the store’s customers do not want a “buttoned up” image. Want the look of a tattoo without the expense and permanency? The Spot is the exclusive retailer in the region for Ed Hardy tattoo art apparel for all age groups. Other clothing lines are multiple brands worn by the contestants affiliated with the Ultimate Fighting Championship program and the “Converse® by John Varvatos” sneaker and clothing line. Buying clothing for oneself or family members can be hectic because too little time is often the enemy of today’s busy family. For typical American fami-
(Continued from page SF–2) “We go the distance when we wait on people, and are very honest to help our customers look their best,” says Greenspun. “Dresses and a bold update of 1960s and 1970s colors have returned. Since destination weddings are in vogue, we sell appropriate dresses for those occasions. Evening wear is chic this season, featuring sophisticated strapless and backless gowns.” Accessories always create a special look for dresses. Regardless of an outfit’s color, black patent leather is a sure winner for shoes. Michele Zelig, owner of Chic Shoes in Northfield, claims she is selling patent
leather, woven into part of the material of both regular shoes and sandals. Both large and small handbags may complement them. “The younger women are buying large handbags for daytime,” says Zelig. “However, women love them, and for evening, small patent leather bags in multiple colors can change an outfit at a reasonable price.” In warmer weather, people want to be as casual as possible. For contemporary, funky, edgy apparel, two stores, The Spot in Ocean City and The Image in Wildwood, offer unique, offbeat clothing.

lies, there never seems to be enough of it. Few people have the luxury of free time to browse through department or specialty store racks. No need to worry about setting aside a shopping date. Just run over to a favorite drugstore to find many clothing items. The Women’s Wear Daily’s Web site (www.wwd.com) reports that chain drugstores like Walgreen’s are offering a line of casual gear items for men, women and children. Priced at below $15, it is the first complete apparel line available at atypical outlets. Savvy consumers
concerned with conservation can take comfort in knowing that Whole Foods is carrying lifestyle clothing that is environmentally friendly.

Fashion on a Budget In 1932, during the Great Depression, Bing Crosby recorded “Brother, Can you Spare a Dime?” The popular tune described how people with jobs and good lives suddenly found themselves left with very little. Fortunately, in 2008, we do not have a situation like those dire days, but there is no denying that everyday folks are tightening their collective belts. However, cutting back does not equal cutting out, and fashion remains an area where compromises can be easily made.
Shoe selections vary from flats to heels.

If buying a new dress or outfit is out of the budget, mixing different accessories to create a new look can transform dresses or pants that a woman already owns into completely different outfits. While a favorite dress may have limited wear, shoes and jewelry can have unlimited versatility. According to Michele Zelig, owner of Chic Shoes in Northfield, “Rather than spending the money to buy a new dress, I have customers who are buying flats and heels to wear with one in their closet. By also changing jewelry or belts and bags, a woman can go from daytime to evening without paying the price of the dress.” One trendy, inexpensive jewelry trend that Zelig claims is very popular is the Idealism style. Picking up on symbols from the 1960s, the necklaces, bracelets and earrings feature peace symbols, plus words from the era of Flower Power. Fashion writer Cynthia Nellis, of About.com, offers some advice for the style-conscious but monetarily challenged buyer. She advises consumers to rethink their definition of “sale” as they head to the
stores. Ignore the promotions for small percentage discounts and wait for the “half-price” sales. Nellis compares buying to a diet, suggesting that women “satiate the fashion lover with a very small treat” that can be paid with cash. While many may wait for those end-of-the-year sales and put clothing away for the following year, it may be better to buy current clothing because fashions do change. Stay stylish, but at a better price, during the right season. Aside from the Shore Mall, Hamilton Mall area and shopping centers like Linwood’s Central Square, the Historic Towne of Smithville offers several chic shops to find the latest fashions (and maybe a few bargains) for every member of your family. For instance, Razzle Dazzle, a “unique boutique for women and men,” also carries a line of items for children. If money is really tight, Nellis suggests creativity. Learn to sew, or brush up on forgotten skills. Modern sewing machines offer unlimited choices because of easier patterns and gorgeous fabrics. Keeping abreast of styles will ensure a smart wardrobe with a lesser price tag. Ladies, why not hold a house party? Arrange for an event to swap fashionable items still stylish and in good condition. Formal wear worn less often may be ideal for exchange. Another idea is to patronize retailers with truly personal service. Jody Levchuk, co-owner of The Spot in Ocean City, says he has years of experience as a personal shopper. “Some of our clothing may be pricey, but I can put together multiple items for someone with a budget less than $100,” Levchuk says. Most agree that the prom gown is the one dress where compromise is almost unthinkable. No matter what the economy brings and one’s budget, most young women will not scrimp on their prom gown. Dressing as a “mature” woman is a crucial motivation to buying the perfect dress, no matter the price tag. While mothers may moan about the average cost, estimated by MyPromStyle.com sponsor Hearst Digital Media to near $250 a dress, teenage girls remain more than willing to spend heavily for the dress of their dreams. n
