MURAL, MURAL ON THE WALL
REVEALING THE STORIES BEHIND SOME OF SAN PEDRO’S FAVORITE PUBLIC PAINTINGS
In recent years, San Pedro has become a hotspot for public art. Drive down any thoroughfare, and you’ll pass at least one mural or other curated piece of art. The port town has had a strong arts community for decades, but only recently has San Pedro been fortunate to feature so many amazing public murals, spearheaded by the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District. Here are a few stories behind some of our favorites.
La Serna de Ojo
Sirens Community Mural
402 West 7th Street (parking lot side)
On June 18, 2017, the Arts District — in collaboration with Community Art Machine and Sirens Java & Tea — launched a novel community mural project called Adventures in Public Art.
The San Pedro Waterfront Arts District conducted a six-week mural workshop with community members led by Teaching Artist Virginia Broersma. It was designed to give the participants a common foundation in the elements of art and the creation of artworks reflecting complex ideas and expressive content.
The Arts District was given the use of the large 80’ x 16’ back wall on the Sirens building.
This highly collaborative method of creating public art was completed with the help of over 25 volunteers and 12 core workshop students. This mural was made possible by generous donations from Phillips 66 Refinery, the Office of Supervisor Don Knabe, and the Community Redevelopment Agency.
La Pincoya en El Norte by Revival Murals
LAMI, Berth 73, Building G (on the Harbor Blvd. side of West Harbor)
La Pincoya en El Norte, by the Revival Murals team of Alonsa Guevara and James Razko, was completed in December 2023. Guevara, the Chilean half of Revival Murals, explains, “La Pincoya is a mythological character from the Pueblo Chilote
(south of Chile). We think it is interesting to introduce her to this part of the Pacific Ocean. La Pincoya en El Norte (in the North) is a metaphor for migration and unification of two far away but similar maritime cultures.”
The 72’ x 15’ mural is the second community engagement mural completed in the San Pedro Waterfront Art District’s Adventures in Public Art program. It included two community painting days with more than 60 locals to help paint the mural. Contributions from the Port of Los Angeles Community Grant Program, a grant from the LA County Creative Recovery Program, and numerous private donations funded it.
In 2024, the mural was updated with augmented reality technology, giving visitors a new way to view the work.
Soulful Sunrise by Luis Sanchez
454 West 6th Street (in the Lilyan Fierman Walkway)
Officially unveiled on February 2, 2017, Soulful Sunrise by local artist Luis Sanchez is located on the east wall of 454 West 6th Street in the newly renovated Lilyan Fierman Walkway, next to the Warner Grand Theatre.
In 2016, the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District announced a mural award to Sanchez, who enlisted the help of fellow Pac Arts resident Regina Argentin. The mural award is part of the City of Los Angeles’ One Percent for the Arts Funding, negotiated by the Council 15 Office.
Luis notes, “When looking at the history of our historic theatre, its incredible
design and history, I wanted to show a tale of past, present, music, dance, movement, celebration of the arts, as well as the diverse culture of San Pedro. I also used some of the applied design aspects from the interior of the Warner Grand.”
Point Fermin by John Van Hamersveld Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, 3720 Stephen M. White Dr. Point Fermin is one of three murals by famed artist John Van Hamersveld at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.
Unveiled in June 2018, the mural depicts a handful of pelicans flying south through puffy clouds, past the cliffs at Point Fermin Park with the 150-year-old Point Fermin Lighthouse in the background. A pair of large blue cresting waves appear on the right. The design features the artist’s signature vibrant colors, straight lines, and bold shapes.
The mural faces the Cabrillo Beach parking lot on the wall of the aquarium’s gift shop. His other two sea life murals adorn two more walls around the aquarium’s entrance. Best-known for his iconic poster design for the 1966 surf film The Endless Summer, one of the most famous movie posters of all time, Van Hamersveld also designed more than 300 album covers, including the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street and the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour.

POINT FERMIN LIGHTHOUSE AT 150
Built in 1874 after a 20-year delay, the Point Fermin Lighthouse was erected due to the efforts of Phineas Banning and several local San Pedro businessmen, who petitioned federal officials to build a lighthouse on the point to welcome ships coming into what is now L.A. Harbor. The lighthouse’s 4th order Fresnel lens and oil lantern were first lit on December 15, 1874.
After the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, the U.S. government issued coastal blackouts, which suspended the use of the light. The lighthouse was never lit again.
Today, the ongoing efforts of the volunteers and Point Fermin Lighthouse Society members have been invaluable in keeping this beacon of history alive. The lighthouse celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2024 with a full year of unique events and activities put on by the society.
The lighthouse is open for guided tours every hour, Tuesday through Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The lighthouse is closed to the public on Mondays. General admission is free; however, a donation is requested for each visitor.
For more information, visit laparks.org/pflighthouse.
WHAT’S THE SAN PEDRO WATERFRONT ARTS DISTRICT ALL ABOUT?
by Linda Grimes, executive director of the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District
The San Pedro Waterfront Arts District was initially founded in 2009 as a CRA (the now defunct Community Redevelopment Agency)- funded partnership program with the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce. Its mission is to support, advocate for, and promote San Pedro arts and artists in all genres. We celebrate diversity and inspire appreciation of cultural and artistic expression.
Since becoming a nonprofit in 2014, the Art District’s work is informed by the National Endowment for the Arts statement on creative placemaking:
“In creative placemaking, partners from public, private, nonprofit, and community sectors strategically shape the physical and social character of a neighborhood, town, tribe, city, or region around arts and cultural activities. Creative placemaking animates public and private spaces, rejuvenates structures and streetscapes, improves local business viability and public safety, and brings diverse people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired.”
The Arts District’s purpose is to safeguard, promote, and collaborate with the many cultural assets of the district so they may thrive, grow, and continue to be publicly shared and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. We do not want to see gentrification roll over our community’s unique, essential character or displace the artists who make
this place a special part of L.A. Our ongoing marketing efforts highlight all arts and cultural offerings.
The arts and the historic waterfront are the Arts District’s primary resources for providing social, cultural, physical, and economic benefits to the surrounding community.
A naturally occurring Arts District since the 1940s, many artists and art organizations have moved here and become vital to San Pedro’s cultural life.
On view throughout the Arts District are commissioned artist-painted traffic signal boxes, large-scale public murals, and painted storm drains. The district features 90 diverse cultural assets, 48 galleries/artist studios, 35 supporting organizations, and over 100 individual artists whose work is displayed in notable institutions. Numerous nontraditional spaces offer regular arts events, with monthly art openings, performances, and classes throughout the district.
In 2017, the California Arts Council designated San Pedro as one of 14 California Cultural Districts. A San Pedro cultural organization coalition joined to win the state distinction. Our Cultural District is governed by the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District, Council District 15, San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Angels Gate Cultural Center, and the Grand Vision Foundation.

638 S. Beacon St., Ste 374 lafd.org
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), has six stations portside and spread throughout San Pedro neighborhoods.
Fire Station #112 / Fireboat #2 (Active)
444 S. Harbor Blvd., Berth 86
This station is a nexus for boat lovers. Fire Station #112 was originally designed for the Ralph J. Scott fireboat, now a National Historic Landmark. In 2003, it was retired and replaced with a new Fireboat #2, the Warner L. Lawrence, a 105-foot vessel said to be the "world's most powerful fireboat."
LAW ENFORCEMENT
San Pedro has many types of police services. If you need help, you'll likely want officers from the City of Los Angeles Police Department Harbor Division. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, under the direction of the County of Los Angeles, serves small, unincorporated parts of San Pedro. The Los Angeles Port Police patrol the port and neighboring harbor community by water, boat, helicopter, car, and bicycle. In addition, the United States Coast Guard operates from Terminal Island.

POST OFFICES
All the grandeur and craftsmanship of the 1930s Works Progress Administration efforts shine at the U.S. Post Office on Beacon Street in San Pedro. Constructed in 1935, the building's Art Deco architectural details include marble, bronze, detailed floor tiles, and a spectacular mural of "Mail Transportation" by Fletcher Martin in 1938. It also once housed the U.S. Customs Office. It is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
The Assistance League San Pedro - South Bay Post Office is the only all-volunteer United States Post Office in the country, with proceeds going directly back to the community through their many philanthropic programs.

John Van Hamersveld is an American graphic artist and illustrator who has designed posters and record jackets for legendary rock bands from the 1960s onward, as well as large public murals. Among the 300 albums he's worked on are the covers of Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles, Crown of Creation by Jefferson Airplane, and Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones. In 1963, for his first assignment, he designed what became the iconic poster for the surf film The Endless Summer Point Fermin, the mural featured on the cover, is one of four large murals by Van Hamersveld at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Unveiled in June 2018, the mural faces the Cabrillo Beach parking lot on the wall of the aquarium's gift shop. His three other murals depicting sea life adorn three more walls around the aquarium’s entrance. Van Hamersveld continues to produce art in Los Angeles. View his work at post-future.com.
