Annual rejuvenation keeps T
HE Atlantic Hotel’s breathtaking views across St Ouen’s Bay, renowned Michelin-starred restaurant and stylish design make it a favourite with both visitors and Islanders. The luxury hotel adjoining La Moye Golf Course is fully equipped with excellent facilities, including heated swimming pools, a health club and tennis court, and is set on beautiful grounds which extend for six acres. Its restrained 1930s art deco style seamlessly blends the traditional and the contemporary to create an elegant yet warm and inviting feel. However, in many ways what sets the hotel apart is the attention paid to even the smallest details and the impeccable standards set to ensure guests have the best possible experience. An on-going programme of investment means that improvements are continually being made, while the hotel is also closed for one month every year to undergo a complete rejuvenation. During that time, local contractors work tirelessly to service, clean and maintain everything in the hotel including chandeliers, rugs and furniture. Managing director Patrick Burke said that it was very unusual these days for a hotel of this standard to cease operating for a whole month. He said: ‘You literally have to take the hotel apart, clean it, and put it back

together again and you need to know your building very well indeed to do that. ‘One of the reasons we can do it is because we have built up a team of really excellent craftsmen, tradesmen and contractors who come in each January to work with us, including
many who have been doing this with us for 20 or 30 years. ‘Whether they are furniture polishers, decorators or electricians they understand the building very well and without them we couldn’t do it. ‘We’re just one small hotel, but more than 25 local firms worked on the

Atlantic Hotel at the summit project. That means that we’re actually able to put back into the local economy, and I think that’s very important as well.’ The contractors this year included businesses such as Fosse Construction, Bryce Robinson painters and decorators, Fresh Floors, electrician Derek Morin, garden contractors CA Frazier, furniture specialists Whittinghams, Clean Guard, Jet Blast, Islandscape, Drain It, plumbers John Warrener, The Sigma Group and the Island Fire Extinguisher Company. Constantly striving to reach the highest standards is a major priority for the team at The Atlantic, particularly Mr Burke, whose father, Henry, established the hotel in 1970. ‘One of the things that is quite unusual about The Atlantic is that we are a family-owned and run hotel,’ he said. ‘Years ago nearly all hotels were owned and run by families, but these days it’s surprisingly unusual, particularly for hotels at the top end of the market like The Atlantic. ‘That means that we care very deeply about the property, as it has been in the family a long time.’ That dedication is reflected in the impressive number of accolades bestowed on the hotel over the years, including the maintenance of a Michelin star for its Ocean

Restaurant since 2007. Executive head chef Mark Jordan oversees the menus and food preparation at the restaurant, which is one of several rooms at the hotel available for fine dining, weddings and conferences. In addition, The Atlantic is the only local member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World – an exclusive collection of the very best independent hotels from around the world – and it holds four AA red stars and four AA rosettes. Only a handful of hotels in the country have been awarded both of those prestigious ratings. Just last month, the property was selected among the UK’s finest in the TripAdvisor 2013 Travellers’ Choice Hotel Awards after travellers ranked it the 15th best hotel in the country. Late last year, The Atlantic was also crowned winner of the Most Excellent Waterside Hotel award in the prestigious Condé Nast Johansens UK and Ireland Awards for Excellence 2013. ‘The hotel has a very special standing in the marketplace,’ Mr Burke said. ‘Jersey as a destination is a niche destination, certainly in international tourism terms, and The Atlantic is a unique offering in the Jersey marketplace.’ Mr Burke joined the family business in 1985 and succeeded his father as managing director in 1987.

Since then, an annual investment of about £250,000 has ensured that the property has retained its position as one of Jersey’s finest hotels. There are two main projects being undertaken this year. The first is the refurbishment of the golf course-facing side of the property, which will see all of the balconies dismantled, cleaned, redecorated and then reassembled. The second is the creation of a prototype bedroom, which has seen one guest room stripped bare so that it can be used to test ideas for a planned refurbishment. Once the perfect formula has been found, all 50 rooms in the hotel will be refurbished in stages. Mr Burke said that improvements being considered included new energy-efficiency provisions, brand new fabrics and the installation of oak flooring to create continuity throughout the hotel. ‘This is about the hotel evolving,’ he said. ‘Some of the furniture here is really beautiful, so it will be restored and the upholstery renewed. ‘Where we have something that’s good we don’t want to change it, we just want to take it forward.’ There will be a renewed emphasis on technology, with wall-mounted flat screen televisions and possibly even a fully inclusive Sky service in every bedroom. ‘We have the opportunity to keep pushing

the boundaries of what we offer our guests,’ Mr Burke said. Aside from the property, the most important investment The Atlantic makes is in its staff, such as reservations manager Hayley Brockwell who last year celebrated 30 years of service.
In summer, up to 60 people are employed at the hotel, many of whom are locally born or qualified. ‘We make a particular effort to take on local people when recruiting,’ Mr Burke said. ‘We have an absolutely fabulous team of staff, many of whom have worked for the family for years and years and years. They achieve great things. ‘It’s all about the experience of the guests when they come here. The hotel has a magical position overlooking St Ouen’s Bay and it is family-owned, which I think gives it a certain civility, but really it’s all about the staff.
