ABOUT BEAUMONT

Rural Charm Founded at the turn of the 20th century, Beaumont is proud of its rich history and rural charm. The Town served as a welcome “stepping-off point” for early travelers making their way from the Mohave Desert to Los Angeles, and later for L.A. residents eager to vacation in Palm Springs.

Some people, however, set down roots, drawn by the beautiful Mountain vistas; clean, crisp air; and the abundance of cherry and apple orchards. Beaumont is proud of these early settlers and their families, many of whom continue to live and thrive in Beaumont. area in what is now Beaumont. There was no actual town (only a railroad depot and telegraph office marking the summit of the pass) until about 1884, and then the town was known as San Gorgonio.

In the Beginning…

Eighteen-eighty-four was a busy year with George C. Egan building his first store in San Gorgonio, near what is now the center of the Beaumont, on California Avenue. Egan bought land from the railroad company, then sold the Banning property in order to make the last payment on the Beaumont land, which comprised the odd sections in and about the present town of Beaumont. At this point he owned practically the whole town. Egan’s store served as the post office, making him the first postmaster.

The history of the San Gorgonio Pass began eons ago when Native Americans first inhabited the area. For centuries, tribes lived in villages isolated from the outside world until the discovery of the pass. Around the time of the American Revolution, and for the next 80 years,

A Town is Born

Still in use today, The Summit House, Beaumont’s first hotel, was also erected in 1884. With all the building activity people rapidly began coming into the town in 1884. In the fall of 1886, Southern California Investment Company purchased all of George Egan’s holdings in town and summarily changed the town’s name to Beaumont, “unsettling” the old time settlers. The company proceeded to "boom" the town. They designed over 20 miles of streets, planting eucalyptus, pepper and other shade trees along these streets. Spanish explorers, Catholic missionaries, U.S. government survey parties, and a handful of settlers trekked through the region. Explorers and survey parties came through the area looking for an inland route to the Pacific Ocean.

The chief industry of the town was the raising of grain and hay. Beaumont was prospering. However, in 1888, due to inflating land values in Southern California, Beaumont’s boom “burst.” In spite of the economic downturn, the town continued

measured growth. Beaumont now had two stores, one saloon, a post office, livery stable, three hotels, a grain warehouse, a schoolhouse, and two churches. At one time Beaumont was part of San Bernardino County. About 100 years ago, a chicken dinner cost 50 cents, and it could take up to five hours on dirt roads to travel by car from Beaumont to Riverside.

Public transportation service is provided by Pass Transit and connects with neighboring cities as well as other regional transportation systems via Fixed Route and Commuter Link Systems. Additionally, Dial-ARide service (curb-to-curb service) is offered to residents of Beaumont and parts of Cherry Valley. Traveling in and around Beaumont, parts of Cherry Valley and Banning, Dial-A-Ride service is available for senior and/or disabled passengers. Most buses operate on CNG fuel and create environmentally-safe transportation.

Beaumont is located between two international airports. Forty miles to the west is Ontario International Airport, and 35 miles east is Palm 60 Springs International Airport. Amtrak and Metrolink stations are available in both San Bernardino and Riverside, equally distanced from Beaumont at about 26 miles away. Beaumont Pass Transit offers Commuter Link 120 which transports passengers to San Bernardino Station. Sun Line Commuter Link 220 services Riverside Station.

and Intensive Care Unit to feature state-of-the-art equipment while also meeting California’s strict seismic mandates. With the renovation, the hospital now boasts a 23-bed Emergency Department, with a 5-bay Rapid Care area, as well as 16 beds in its Intensive Care Unit.

The next phase of construction includes the addition of a new 120-bed Patient Care Building, which will help serve the expanding populations of Banning, Beaumont, Cherry Valley, Calimesa, and other areas in the San Gorgonio Pass. The addition of the Patient Care Building will usher in an exciting time in the Pass area as the hospital grows and continues to be the community’s number one healthcare choice.

EDUCATION

Excellence Education at Beaumont Schools is a Shared Commitment with Home, School and Community.

With an outstanding reputation that ranks highly in the Pass Area, the Beaumont Unified School District has ten schools, including six Elementary sites, two Middle School sites, and two High Schools. The District offers 21st Century Learning, which is a companion to Home Schooling Programs. There is also the Beaumont Adult School program, and World Language Program in the Beaumont District. Some of the awards given to schools in this District are the Gold Ribbon Schools from the California Department of Education, A California Distinguished School, Title 1 Academic Achievement Award, and being named a National Blue Ribbon School. In 2015 Beaumont High School was named one of the Best High Schools by U.S. News and World Report, and the District has been Kindness Certificated. Sports, Technology, The Arts, Community Service, and 21st Century Learning are all part of the goals of achieving a quality education here.

Beaumont Library District By Luren Dickenson, Principal Librarian

What a gem we have in our Beaumont Library District, which is one of only a dozen special library districts in the state with its own elected Board, independent of both city and county government. Founded in 1911, the Library District serves over 70,000 people in a 60-square-mile area that includes Beaumont and Cherry Valley. Opened in 1914, the Beaumont Library was funded by Andrew Carnegie. 12

Revenue restrictions since Proposition 13 in 1978, loss of state taxes that were permanently redirected to schools in the 1990s, and lack of builder impact fees in recent years, however, have resulted in limited support for the improvement of library services. As a result, the Library has dealt with a huge influx of new users caused by the rapid growth of the community, that has seen the population quadruple since 2000, on a shoestring budget. But despite limited resources, Beaumont Library has implemented advanced technologies, such an RFID-secured collection that allows for self-checkout and self check-in of materials, a mechanized sorting system, and the use of “information concierges” with radio-powered headsets to provide personalized service, all at reduced cost. GRANTS SUCCESSES HAVE ALSO SUBSIDIZED SERVICES, SUCH AS THE LIBRARY’S: Ready to Read Van that has reached out to home childcare providers, daycare centers, Head Start classes, and community locations with engaging and educational story times for preschool children since 2012

As a result, Beaumont Library was positively discussed in Library Journal in 2008 and again in 2011 for its progressive strategies. And the January/February 2017 issue of CA Special District featured a story on the District, entitled “The Little Library District That Could!” Beaumont Library District knows that it needs more space because its building has not been enlarged since the 1960s. There is a Lavender Festival each weekend in June at the Historic Highland Springs Resort (10600 Highland Springs Avenue, Cherry Valley), which has special events all during the year.
