Hermosa means
Beautiful
“
Founded in 1906, the city of Hermosa Beach is located on the Pacific Ocean, five miles south of Los Angeles International Airport and just 18 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. 6

Even with its proximity to Los Angeles, Hermosa Beach remains a quaint and beautiful beachside community, just over one square mile in size, with a population of more than 19,000. With great weather year-round and the beautiful sandy beaches on the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop, Hermosa Beach is the perfect place to enjoy a wide array of outdoor activities including surfing, paddle boarding and beach volleyball.
In the last 20 years, Hermosa Beach has undergone extensive renovation and beautification projects that have transformed the landscape of the city, making Hermosa Beach even more deserving of its name. The renovation of Pier Plaza near the Pacific Ocean was completed in 1997, beautifying the plaza and closing the area to street traffic to create a popular center for bars, restaurants and unique shops.

In the center of the excitement is the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, which is comprised of more than 300 members from every segment of the business community. 3 DAYS IN HERMOSA
PLAY AT THE BEACH, RESTAURANT-HOP AND UNWIND Allow yourself to be immersed into the unique culture of this historic coastal town that’s 1.4 square walkable miles and less than 20,000 Hermosans. Staying in iconic hotels such as the Beach House or Sea Sprite creates an ideal setting that whispers you’ve truly arrived in Southern California. The inspiring scene of beach volleyball players and surfers riding spectacular waves welcomes you to paradise. Meanwhile, outdoor enthusiasts bike, jog and skate along The Strand beneath sunny skies and warm sea breezes. A relaxing way to ease into the locals’ norm is to stroll along The Strand to Martha’s 22nd Street Grill. It’s a chill spot – perfect for breakfast – that’s tucked away beside sandy bungalows. Then ease back into downtown and pick up some board shorts or a bikini and hit the beach that’s been calling in your dreams. Pier Surf, Becker Surfboards and Spyder Surf Shops are a quick walk from the sand. Those wanting to play in the surf can rent boards, wetsuits and even get lessons at the local surf shops, including E.T. Surfboards. Nothing says welcome to L.A. like riding the sea, whether it’s on a boogie board, paddleboard or surfboard. People can also rent kayaks and personal watercrafts in neighboring Redondo Beach inside the marina. Folks with little ones can spend hours building sandcastles, and all the kid-friendly equipment is available at nearby stores. After hours on the water and playing along the shoreline, grab some lunch at one of the many restaurants in town. Local surf ‘n’ turf, Mexican, classic American food and Mediterranean dishes are just a few of the immediate options. The rooftop of Hennessey’s Tavern lets you admire the coastline from a pelican’s viewpoint, otherwise kickback on patios at Baja Sharkeez, Silvio’s Brazilian Beach BBQ, Greenbelt or Fish Shop. Once recharged, pick up a volleyball, find a net and participate in the sport that became famous on this very sand. Play near the waves like volleyball legends have before as players at any level are sure to have a fantastic experience. As the sun tilts toward the west, refreshing drinks and tasty appetizers begin dotting the scene as people tran-
sition into early evening. Hermosa Beach has a happy-hour hotspot for everyone from super casual to fashion consensus locales. Dive into that festive beach time and reminisce about your first day in this South Bay jewel while sharing the optimism for what lies ahead. Finding a special place to have dinner is as easy as walking along Hermosa and Pier avenues. Restaurateurs will show you how L.A.’s food scene has taken over this beach town with impressive entrees and desserts that previously never ventured into the South Bay. Restaurants such as Mediterraneo, Dia de Campo, the Hook & Plow or The Rockefeller are a terrific choice. And no day in Hermosa Beach is complete without watching the best show on the West Coast – a California sunset. With toes in the

sand or on the pier’s edge, gaze upon a water-colored sky washed with vibrant oranges, pinks and purples above the awe-inspiring Pacific Ocean as the sun settles into the deep blue and shoreline lights slowly reveal the Queen’s Necklace that outlines the Santa Monica Bay. As night falls, find yourself within a festive vibe that seamlessly drifts through downtown as patrons hop from stylish nightclubs and cool beach bars filled with impressive live music and L.A.’s top DJs. >>

HISTORICAL PEEK, SHOPPING AND ENTERTAINMENT Finding a classic breakfast place always adds uniqueness to your vacation. Try an eatery such as Scotty’s on The Strand or Ocean Diner. Along with terrific food, these locations truly allow you to appreciate the laidback lifestyle of Hermosa Beach residents. Those looking to catch a historical perspective are encouraged to visit the Hermosa Beach Museum, which shows visitors how the city began more than 100 years ago. It’s also home to the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame. People can learn about Hermosa Beach outside of the historical exhibits by viewing several murals throughout downtown, too. These capture various aspects about the city’s unique culture and history from surfing to jazz. Remember to swing by Java Man, Paradis or Paciugo Gelato & Caffé for a treat while coolly wandering the area. Strolling along the Surfer’s Walk of Fame is the perfect way to end a trip through Hermosa Beach’s past. The cherished plaques dot the city’s pier honoring legendary surfers who garnered worldwide fame riding the waves below, cementing Hermosa Beach’s place in surfing history. For lunch, there are a variety of restaurants within a short walk such as Boardwalk Fries, Burgers and Shakes; Abigaile; American Junkie; or Killer Shrimp. You can also grab something to eat on the beach at Paradise Bowls, Pita Pit or Project Taco. And if you’re visiting on a Wednesday, make sure to browse the Farmers Market at Pier Plaza between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. for delicious food, unique crafts, jewelry, art and fresh flowers amid live music and towering palm trees. Additionally, you have to find something that’ll magically transcend you back to the beach. Spend a few carefree hours shopping at unique stores such as Curious, Sol Baby, Treasure Chest, Yak & Yeti, Wicked+, Deep Pocket Jean Company, Beach Chique, Pampered Tot and Gum Tree. Make sure to stop by Uncorked for a little wine tasting, too, and you might as well select something to open for the end of your night. A nod to Hermosa Beach wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Lighthouse where West Coast Jazz flourished more than 60 years ago. Catch live jazz at the Lighthouse from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. And if the live music has inspired you to hit the
10
dance floor, stroll up Aviation Boulevard to You Can Dance ballroom studio that’s owned by world-famous dancer Anna Trebunskaya and her mother Irina. Dance lessons are offered for a variety of styles such as waltz, swing, zumba, foxtrot, tango and salsa. If you’re looking to show off that new outfit, plan to have dinner downtown. Palmilla Cocina Y Tequila was named within the top 100 restaurants in the U.S. by Open Table, or you can choose from other favorites like Zane’s Restaurant, Baran’s 2239 and Bottle Inn Ristorante. Another evening in Hermosa Beach offers more excitement with phenomenal entertainment. In addition to numerous clubs and bars,
Saint Rocke on Pacific Coast Highway routinely brings in top bands with live music every night. If you’d rather spend the night laughing away, make sure to reserve tickets to the treasured Comedy and Magic Club. World-famous comedians perform here nightly along with former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, who showcases his legendary stand-up skills most Sunday nights. Those wanting even more nightlife options can venture to the beachfront and visit the Mermaid and Deck, which have flourished in Hermosa Beach for several decades. It’s also a great chance to check out other spots you were intrigued by earlier in the day to see how the celebratory vibe comes alive downtown.

EXPLORE SoCAL AND RETURN TO PARADISE Start your third day in paradise with a walk onto the pier for a beautiful view of the sun rising over California, which paints a remarkable sight along the coast that’s only surpassed by the sun’s evening encore. Then find a healthy breakfast at a Hermosa Beach favorite – Good Stuff – just steps from the sand. Adjacent to the sunny patio is Hermosa Cyclery where you can rent a beach cruiser and ride The Strand to pedal along the bay. (You can also journey out with Beach Cities Bike Tours.) This scenic bike path is an avid cyclists’ dream route and the best ride for families that’s safe and easy for children. Riders can venture into Redondo Beach to check out all the shops and restaurants around the harbor and Riviera Village. Whalewatching and scenic cruises are also offered out of Redondo for a closer look at sea life, in addition to amazing views of the coastline and open ocean. For a more challenging ride, explore the Palos Verdes Peninsula and take the panoramic ocean-view route along the western edge up to San Vicente Lighthouse. Cyclists who head north travel into tourist-friendly Manhattan Beach and its iconic pier, along Marina del Rey’s beautiful harbor, through the uniqueness of Venice Beach and to the world-famous Santa Monica Pier (a trip on the Ferris wheel is a must). Hermosa Beach is near the 405 and 105 freeways, in addition to Pacific Coast Highway running through town, and it sits five miles south of Los Angeles International Airport. You’ll be able to see exactly why Hermosa Beach is the perfect basecamp to explore L.A.’s playground. Whether it’s Disneyland, downtown L.A., Hollywood or Universal Studios, you’re ideally located near these renowned attractions that are all within 19 to 31 miles. (It’s beneficial to leave for your destination before or after rush hour and again on your return.) You can also opt for the Metro that offers buses, light rail and subway lines that can take you anywhere. Using ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft are inexpensive and smart ways to still see the sights if you want to avoid driving as well. A little road trip to delightfully different scenery is always an option for folks wanting to see why so many
people love living in SoCal. From Hermosa Beach, you’re only about 2 ½ hours from Big Bear Lake for a day in the pines and snowy peaks around 7,000 feet or the warm desert oasis of Palm Springs. Meanwhile, the soothing sunset at the beach waits for your return to paradise. Before making your trek, remember to stop by the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau office at 1007 Hermosa Ave. during your stay to grab brochures and maps that’ll help you live your dreams by exploring Hermosa Beach and beyond. This is just a brief sample of all Hermosa Beach has to offer.

THE LITTLE GEM BY THE SEA… ONE OF THE TOP 10 BEACHES IN THE USA”
“
As featured on the Travel Channel, Hermosa Beach is deservedly known as “one of the Top 10 Beaches” not just for its pristine shores, but also for its outdoor activities, festivals and nationally televised events, and as the home of the “largest arts and crafts show in Southern California.” Hermosa Beach, just 1.4 square miles in size, is 5 miles south of Los Angeles. The town’s mild weather patterns make it an ideal vacation spot all year. Temperatures range from highs of 77 degrees in the summer to a balmy 67 degrees in winter, with the nighttime temperatures rarely going below 50 degrees. A scenic beach along with a variety of shops and restaurants makes this seaside city a popular vacation destination for Californians and international visitors. Daytime activities abound in this vacation haven. Hermosa Beach’s one-and-ahalf-mile stretch of sand is the training ground for some of the world’s best pro-circuit volleyball players. Olympic gold medalists can be seen honing their skills at the net. It is also an ideal place for surfing enthusiasts, boogie boarders, stand-up paddleboarders, ocean swimmers and people wanting to fish from the pier. Those who wish for more relaxing pursuits build sand 30
castles, enjoy the antics of pelicans and dolphins, sun themselves in the year-round breezes, and stakeout a place to view each evening’s spectacular show as the sun drops into the Pacific. Hermosa Beach is much more than sand and surf. This lively beach village offers up live music with choices from rock to blues to jazz. In August, the Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series takes place on the beach for the whole family to enjoy. You’ll
Playhouse and the famous Comedy and Magic Club where Jay Leno performs Sunday nights and such famous names as Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Maher drop by regularly for an impromptu appearance. There are many festivals and special events in Hermosa Beach too. Fiesta Hermosa attracts more than 100,000 visitors during both Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. This street fair, which has been a tradition for more than 40 years, fea-

pony rides, a food court, the Charity Beer and Wine Garden and two soundstages with live bands performing all day long. We also offer free bike valet parking on the beach south of the pier. In January, the Chamber also hosts a New Year’s Eve Gala with entertainment on Pier Plaza. In March, the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade fills the streets with revelers and the whole town becomes “Irish” for the day. And fresh fruits and vegetables are available every Wednesday at the Chamber’s Farmers Market, where residents meet to buy fresh provisions and exchange the latest gossip. Conveniently located 10 minutes south of Los Angeles International Airport, travelers can visit the star-studded streets of Hollywood, glamorous Beverly Hills or the theme parks of Anaheim and still get back to the beach in time to witness the magnificent sunset. It is easily accessible by car or taxi to all major Los Angeles business and leisure destinations. Hermosa Beach, the little gem by the sea, is ideal for everyone. Whether you’re a couple, traveling solo or on a family vacation, Hermosa’s friendly atmosphere and special setting will make your getaway easy, fun and unforgettable.

PRESERVING THE CITY’S HISTORY:
HERMOSA BEACH HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Historical Society’s purpose is to preserve and chronicle the history of Hermosa Beach. Established in 1987, its offices and the museum are located in the Hermosa Beach Community Center, which is located at 710 Pier Ave. (the large building on the southwest corner of Pier Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway). The mission of the Hermosa Beach Historical Society is to “acquire, preserve and interpret historical memorabilia and other materials pertaining to the history of the City of Hermosa Beach. This collection shall be extended to the public as a source of delight, illumination and lifelong learning.” The society’s phone number is 310-318-9421. 32
SUSTAINABILITY Hermosa Beach has clearly shown its commitment to the new sustainability movement, not just by joining it, but by taking a leadership role. This was sparked by a grassroots movement among local residents, which resulted in the creation of a two-year Green Task Force, implementation of award-winning stormwater infiltration projects on Pier Avenue and on the beach, the initiation of programs to create incentives for renewable energy projects and a reduction of pollution. The Green Task Force presented a sustainability plan to the City Council providing a road map to improve community health and livability with recommended policies to encourage bicycling, walking, carpooling, public transportation and energy efficiency. Hermosa Beach is also one of seven cities participating in the South Bay Bicycle Master Plan to create more bicycle-friendly roadways with regional connectivity and encourage cycling as a preferred mode of transportation while improving road safety. The plan calls for more than eight miles of bikeways in Hermosa Beach. Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau

FIRE DEPARTMENT Upon Hermosa Beach’s incorporation in 1907, the City Council created a volunteer fire chief position for the Hermosa Beach Fire Department. Clement L. “Bob” Reinbolt was appointed as the first fire chief and he in turn hired four volunteer firefighters. Their first fire engine was a horse drawn, two-wheeled cart that carried a small amount of hose, two axes and one bucket. As time passed, the small city became more populated with homes and small businesses, which increased the need for better fire protection. Today, the Hermosa Beach Fire Department consists of one fire station with a total of 15 fire suppression personnel, one fire chief, one emergency manager, one fire inspector and one administrative assistant. There are three platoons that rotate a 48hour schedule – A, B and C shifts. Currently, 14 out of 15 fire personnel have paramedic status. >> www.hbchamber.net

THE CHAMBER
MORE THAN 100 YEARS OLD AND STILL GOING STRONG
Looking back more than 100 years to 1912, Hermosa Beach was indeed a very different place. The 1,500-acre tract of the Rancho Sausal Redondo – named Hermosa (“beautiful” in Spanish) when it was purchased just 12 years before – had evolved from a stretch of barren sand dunes to a small, tree-laden residential community of less than 1,000 people with a modest business district. The first businesses served by the new Chamber cropped up along Hermosa and Pier avenues and the town also featured a post office, a church and two schools. 46
Known primarily as a resort town, Hermosa and its business community continued to grow slowly throughout the next decade. By the 1920s, several banks had opened, along with restaurants and stores, a pier, and a private club that eventually became the site of the historic Biltmore Hotel, which no longer exists. The Chamber during this period moved its offices into an auditorium building at the land end of the new pier, next door to the county library. According to a Daily Breeze article published in 1957 in honor of the City of Hermosa Beach’s 50th anniversary, the Chamber “was one of the most powerful influences in the growth of early Hermosa. Its members really took to heart the slogan: ‘What the real estate agents can’t do, the Chamber of Commerce can.’ And, to a limited degree, they did. The young civic organization did much to help spark the drive for a new city hall, a new pier and such things as better streets, lighting and sanitation. And its promotional work was largely responsible for bringing in a number of new residents to the area.” Among Hermosa Beach’s pioneering businesses was its first bank – the First Bank of Hermosa on the northwest corner of Pier and Hermosa avenues. Organized by
James Walker, it later became the First National Bank. Mr. Otto Meyer opened the first grocery store and fish market. The first boarding and rooming house sat in a frame building on Pier Avenue. Mrs. M. Darling operated it and also sold bread occasionally. John Kerwin bought the property and operated a bakery in the building during the summer months. A bowling alley was the only amusement house operated in those early days. It was located in a long, one-story building on the corner of 11th Street and The Strand. It housed several activities during its time, as well as the tax collector’s office and the press rooms for the Hermosa Beach Review. A woman owned the first theater, built on a lot she purchased from Ben Brown. The structure later became a garage and is located just in back of the Barstow Building on 10th Place. In 1915, C.D. Barlow built a small brick building that he used as a motion picture theater. The Otto Meyer building also showed early motion pictures. The building had previously been used as the City Hall and later became the Bijou Theatre. Ocean View School, now torn down, was the first school building erected in Hermosa Beach. It was located on top of a

sand dune four blocks from the beach, and no walks or streets of any kind led to it when it was built. This school was constructed of wood, two stories high with a belfry. St. Cross Episcopal Church was the community’s first church building. Donations, subscriptions and entertainment provided the finances for the lumber and carpenter work. While connected to the outside world via the Santa Fe Railway, the paving of the dirt trail known as El Camino Real on the east side of town brought a new generation of motorists into the area. In 1935, the road was widened and designated as Pacific State Highway – still a main artery into Hermosa Beach. The business community struggled through the years of the Great Depression and an earthquake in the early 1930s damaged a number of structures in town. Still mainly viewed as a vacation spot, Hermosa finally began attracting full-time residents by the late 1930s as industry in the immediate and surrounding areas flourished. Downtown became a bustling shopping district and the local population swelled to over 7,000 by the beginning of World War II. That number doubled in just over 10 years with the advent of the aircraft industry. Through the next few decades, Hermosa Beach cemented its reputation as a great place to raise a family, a prime shopping and dining destination, and a jewel in the crown of California beaches. Throughout Hermosa Beach’s various metamorphoses, the Chamber has been there every step of the way to guide its members and promote commerce in this wonderful and unique community.

Four times a year, larger mixers with other local Chambers are held, and you’ll have the opportunity to share information and business contacts from around the South Bay. Each event is hosted by a member business, and the informal settings make new contacts easy with businesses in adjacent cities. Our monthly networking luncheons provide attendees with an opportunity to sell their products and services and to network with other business owners.
Business Directory & Visitors Guide – The directory (which you are currently reading) provides a complete listing of all our member businesses. It is mailed to all members, delivered directly to our residents and provided free in guest rooms at all member hotels. Visitors who want recommendations on where to get a good haircut, where to rent skates or a bicycle and which stores carry souvenirs can find all the information they need. The directory is also a useful source for various services and restaurants for residents, who receive a free copy or can obtain an extra copy from the Chamber office. The directory is also presented in an online flipbook version on the Chamber’s website.
Your Voice at City Hall – The Chamber represents the needs and concerns of the business community to our city administration. The Chamber maintains an active dialogue with local officials to help improve our business community and helps find solutions to problems that businesses face from time to time. Together, we can make business solutions for the future growth of the community.
48
