ranca and Angela – friends since college and former athletes and fitness enthusiasts – opened Fit On in November 2010 with a goal to become South Bay’s premier boutique fitness destination. What humbly began as a few indoor cycling bikes in the garage has now grown to two fitness studio locations offering more than 100 classes per week and more than 30 instructors! “It’s been exciting to watch our clientele grow throughout the past six years,” they agree. “Whether it’s the beginner taking their first cycling or barre class, a student adopting a healthy lifestyle or an avid cyclist who is recovering from an injury, our spectrum of clients is wide. With such a diverse customer base, it’s critical that we listen. Our class offerings have evolved to ensure that all ages and fitness levels are comfortable at Fit On.

How did you get started in your profession? I moved to the South Bay in 1988 for a new job and was very successful. There, I met my husband. We were married in 1990 and together had 4 children. Shortly thereafter, a surprise pregnancy. As time went on, I became more and more distressed about having to put my baby in someone else’s care as my previous caretaker had abused my baby which was a very difficult and painful experience to go through. At 5 months pregnant, I came up with a business plan to start a family daycare and convinced my husband to let me quit my job. The only thing I wanted to do was to protect my baby.
many people there and I was so passionate about our company. I knew we needed to have this building but not all of the members were interested in sharing their building with us. By the time they voted on our proposal, we had full support and from them as well as excitement for our new Beach Babies home at 540 Rosecrans Avenue which opened June 1995 and licensed for 53 infants and children. I found myself working harder than ever! I managed the kitchen, did all the breaks and tours, accounting, and phones. Also my growing staff worked very hard following our philosophy to give infants and children plenty of love and security so they will thrive! We made repairs on weekends as well as set up for the MBPOA dinner once a month on Friday night. Then Sunday we turned it back into a daycare. Those were the days! Life was very busy but I had no idea it was about to get so much busier!
Our first (and only) ad ran on 2/14/91, the birth of Beach Babies. I began caring for children in our home before my baby was born and I provided a very loving and nurturing environment. I had a mix of ages, newborn to 3 years. After my baby came, I hired my first employee and we split the children, babies upstairs and toddlers downstairs. We had 10 children. Then we rented a house a few doors down and started our first “infant center” with 15 infants, and my home had the 2 year olds. Then we needed more space as we had such a wait list for babies and so the third house was opened and now we had a preschool class. We had so much fun! It was different then during 1991-1994! We had swings inside hanging from the ceiling beams, regular high chairs, bouncies hanging in the doorway, sesame street playing on the television and a big red “bye bye” buggy that we took the babies for a stroll on the strand daily. As time went on, there was a perfect building in the middle of where our homes were located that I thought would be the perfect place for our growing child care family business. I was able to meet with the owners who then wanted me to do a presentation to their group, the Manhattan Beach Property Owners Association of 110 members. I was so nervous during that speech because there were so
Our Child Care Center now offered 4-5 fun learning lessons daily and focused on getting children more than ready for Kindergarten by meeting and exceeding the requirements of the local elementary schools. In 1999, I drove down Artesia and found the footlocker building for lease. With a long waiting list, BB2 opened in December, 2000! We had an incredible time getting this one remodeled. We had to trench the inside to put plumbing in, then build kiddy toilet areas, kitchens and then furnish it. During this period, we opened our home again to children in need of quality care until the remodel was complete. Beach Babies #2 located at 1775 Artesia Blvd, Manhattan Beach was licensed for 120 children. My 5 kids grew up always sharing their home with Beach Babies! My original little helper, Christie came home from college wanting to own a center. I agreed to help her get set up with a family daycare so she could learn the business. Funny thing happened along the way! While looking for an office for my husband’s architectural firm, our broker happened to find the perfect building for Beach Babies #3 in El Segundo. This was an even larger remodel. In September 2008, Beach Babies #3 opened to serve 153 more children.

Two additional opportunities became available a few years later. First, to expand BB#2 on Artesia in Manhattan Beach, there were two buildings next door available. Also, another building became available in El Segundo that was perfect for another child care center. We simultaneously remodeled these buildings and opened 2 additional locations located at 1765 Artesia for 52 children and 2270 El Segundo Blvd, for 120 infants and children. Today we proudly serve the South Bay families and care for over 500 infants and children daily, providing 165 jobs for enthusiastic and wonderful ladies, all of which would not have happened without the love and nurturing our amazing staff provide daily to all our Beach Babies children. Also, many of our staff have been employed for over 22 years. Our business is like a big family! Even after graduation, our groups of children, families and staff remain close and come back to visit during high school and college. Manhattan Beach is the foundation of our business and we are so proud to have started our little family business out of our home. What makes Beach Babies stand out from similar businesses? Beach Babies has grown into what it is today because of a simple philosophy: To give infants and children plenty of love and security so they will thrive. Since 80% of a child’s development occurs by the age of three, what they learn from the very beginning will be with them for a lifetime. It is our primary goal at Beach Babies is to make it a great beginning! One of the most important benefits of our program is our low teacher-to-child ratio. Beach Babies provides exceptionally low ratios to better meet the needs of our children and to ensure a quality pro-

gram. Loving, individual care is essential for a child’s development, comfort, and happiness which Beach Babies believes is of utmost importance. In addition to our low ratios, Beach Babies also provides diapers and wipes, potty training, sunscreen, and nutritious meals with organic milk for toddlers and preschoolers at no additional cost. The basis of our philosophy is love and respect for all children beginning with infancy. We involve the children in activities relevant to them. We help the children learn to find their own solutions and build security by teaching trust. We encourage and nurture each child to grow socially, physically, cognitively, and emotionally. In this loving environment, we know each child will gain confidence and self-respect as well as respect for others and the environment. We practice our philosophy each day at Beach Babies which allows parents to feel secure in their choice of childcare providers. What kind of marketing techniques do you use and how do measure their outcome? I am proud to say, It's all word of mouth. We do not advertise, except for our name and phone number in the Manhattan Beach and El Segundo chamber directories. Our reputation stands for itself and we are so proud and honored to service the children in the South Bay. What advice would you have for other businesses when it comes to Marketing and Public Relations. Stay true to your ideals, ethics and passion for your business. Give the best quality and customer service while listening to feedback from your customers as well as your employees.
